Conservation of Paint Hill Farm will Increase Size of Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) purchased a 305-acre tract near Fort Bragg in Moore County
hosts well-managed and frequently burned longleaf pine stands
a population of the state-threatened sandhills pyxie-moss and other at-risk species
such as Bachman’s sparrow and loggerhead shrike
In the coming months, the property will be acquired by the North Carolina (NC) Division of Parks and Recreation to expand Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, increasing the park’s acreage by about one-third
Weymouth Woods is one of the 25 state natural areas of the NC state parks system
made a generous bargain sale of the property to TNC for $4 million
conveyed 115 acres to Weymouth Woods (now Paint Hill Tract) with the help of TNC back in 1996
This project will conserve nearly 60% of the remaining unprotected portion of the Paint Hill Significant Natural Heritage Area, which the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program considers exceptional
the property has blossomed from a farm focused on pine straw and hay production into a healthy
diverse and resilient example of longleaf pine forest
evidenced by the listed species and fox squirrels which reside on the property,” said Matt Greene
TNC’s Sandhills land protection specialist
“This property is a wonderful example of the role private landowners can play in preserving working lands and of the value of public-private partnerships.”
the NC Division of Parks and Recreation received a grant from the North Carolina Land and Water Fund (NCLWF) to fund the addition of this property
with the project being the highest-scoring application in last year’s grant cycle
The state General Assembly allocates taxpayer dollars to NCLWF each year to support conservation projects across the state
Additional funding for this acquisition was provided by the U.S
Army via the Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) program
The property lies less than a mile from Fort Bragg and was at risk of development
supplemental funding from the Readiness and Recreation Initiative (RaRI) was awarded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF)
leaving more NCLWF funding available for additional priorities across the state
TNC has partnered with Fort Bragg to help conserve nearly 25,000 acres since 1999
in and around Fort Bragg and Camp Mackall to prevent incompatible development from affecting the military mission
Paint Hill Farm features one of the highest topographic features within the county and affords views of drop zones at Fort Bragg and signal flares used in night training exercises on Camp Mackall
"We look forward to working with The Nature Conservancy in the next few months to coordinate resource protection activities and to officially add Paint Hill Farm to Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve," said State Parks Director Brian Strong
"We are grateful to have a longstanding partner in the Sandhills like TNC that has supported us on so many incredible acquisition projects such as Paint Hill Farm and facilitated their addition to our beautiful state parks system.”

Weymouth officials are looking to increase the cost of trash removal for the second year in a row
Officials say the fees continue to fall short in covering the cost, creating a budget shortfall.
The mayor's office is proposing to increase the trash fee to $276 and $150 for seniors
That's an increase of $12.50 per quarter for seniors and $27 per quarter for other households
Langill said trash and recycling is expected to cost the town $5.9 million this fiscal year
yet the town is only collecting $2.8 million in trash fees
That's after the town this year increased the trash fee from $100 to $168 and $60 to $100 for seniors
Langill said the proposed new increase will create $2 million in new revenue
which still leaves a shortfall of $1 million in the trash budget that will be absorbed by the general fund
Mayor Robert Hedlund and Chief of Staff Ted Langill presented to town council Tuesday
the proposed fiscal 2026 operating budget of $218.8 million
an increase of about 4 percent from this fiscal year's budget of $210 million
Weymouth sees huge jump in revenues through new constructionLangill said the town is projecting the largest jump in new tax base growth in the last decade with an increase of 37 percent
"It shows the tax value of new construction in town," he said
The town also expects to see the largest increase in state aid in more than 10 years
underfunded items eat up new revenueBut Langill said fixed costs like health insurance
utilities and trash removal will quickly eat up any increase in revenue
“Over 42 percent is going to those fixed costs,” Langill said
“For the last few years fixed costs had lead the way in budget increases
Most of that is not in our control and is just the cost of doing business.”
Health insurance costs are expected to increase 8.3 percent
after increasing 11 percent this fiscal year
"If that becomes a trend that's going to be a difficult cost to overcome," Langill said
Other increases include the fire department overtime budget
and assessments paid to the state for services like the MBTA
The district's proposed fiscal 2026 budget is about $92.1 million
which is a 5.27% increase from the fiscal 2025 budget of about $87.5 million
Mayor Robert Hedlund's administration has indicated the town can support a 3% budget increase
The district is proposing to move seven elementary instructional coaches to classroom teacher positions and eliminate approximately 20 full-time employees from grades six to 12
The district is also proposing to leave the executive director of elementary education position open following a retirement
as well as the director of fine and performing arts position following a resignation
Town council referred the budget to its budget/management committee for review
Town Council President Michael Molisse praised Hedlund's administration on its work on the budget
"We're doing much better than a lot of other towns are doing," Molisse said
Residents will have a chance to weigh in on Hedlund’s spending plan for fiscal 2026 during the annual town meeting at 7:30 p.m

WEYMOUTH − This latest cooking adventure with a small creature described as "a mean
green and invasive eating machine" comes naturally for Sharon St
"I always loved food," Sharon says on a recent work day at the family business, St. Ours & Company LLC. in East Weymouth
Her favorite outings were the clam bakes on the sand spit at the mouth of the North and South rivers
chasing a tasty solution to a growing problem plaguing the Northeastern fishing industry – a huge green crab population that is slowly decimating the native population of native shellfish
Sharon is in the company's freezer room, where large bags of frozen Northeastern green crabs sit on shelves. Invasive green crabs are abundant on the South Shore and Cape Cod; the Northeastern green crabs grow to a width of 2½ to 4 inches
They are the key ingredient in the company's new green crab broth
The St. Ours recently unveiled the Crab Broth Powder, at the Seafood Expo North America trade show in Boston
It was chosen as one of three finalists in the best new product for food service category among 68 entries
of Maine won for a gluten-free eel Kabayaki fillet.)
The first thing you see on the company's website: "Green crabs are an invasive species destroying our coasts
Let's eliminate the threat by eating them."
a chemical engineer with a long career in the food manufacturing industry
started the company in 1979 and is president; she is vice-president
her father has been "tinkering with new ideas" for food products
one of her jobs was "sealing up bags of fish emulsion and bags of fish heads in our basement to test as bait in our lobster traps."
He had a solid background in using spray dryers to make dehydrated fruit powders and developed a new process for making and selling dehydrated clam broth powder to wholesale
HIs company thrived as the popularity of clam chowder grew in New England and beyond
In 2019, the family, including Sharon's late brother Fred Jr. and sister, Susan, attended a lecture at the North and South Rivers Watershed Association in Norwell on the growing invasive green crab problem.
The exploding population of European and Asian green crabs was ruining some of the East Coast's most valuable marshes and river banks. The green crabs, with voracious appetites, can quickly destroy all the eel grass, which provides food, shelter and protection from predators for both shellfish and fin fish
One green crab can lay up to 185,000 eggs in a seasonWhen Sharon learned that one adult green crab can release 185,000 eggs once or twice a year
She already knew that green crabs were delicious
Ours company had allowed a high school student to come in and do a science project − making a seafood stock out of green crabs − at its processing facility in Pembroke
so we knew they were tasty and good," Sharon says
She compares green crabs with the popular blue crabs in Maryland
"Crabs have a really mild seafood flavor and people also like them for their flaky
"You don't want to cover up the nice sweet flavor
But this crab is definitely more robust in flavor and very sweet."
she proposed adding green crabs to the company's product line
Ours company already sold a powder for clam broth; over the next few years
she would try to develop a sweet green crab powder
She was in touch with greencrab.org
an organization devoted to developing culinary markets for the invasive green crab
Its motto is: "Problem to plate: Let's Eat the invasive green crab."
In addition to the creative challenge of this project
starting with a new species and a new process
It was fulfilling for me to be going through the whole process with him
He has decades of institutional knowledge that I don't have and that I can carry forward."
The first task was figuring out how to collect
cook and process the crabs into a palatable food
She started "tinkering," as she had watched her father do for many years
She had to figure out how to kill the green crabs without having them break down and emit a black liquid
She found she could quickly kill them by freezing them
Turning green crabs into a powder with long shelf lifeExperimenting for over a year
she developed a way to turn North Atlantic green crabs
which local fishermen brought to the Pembroke processing facility
Sharon has just finished her first run making concentrate to sell and also has turned some into powder
a "natural seafood product," is nearly ready to be sold in 20-ounce cans
The label states that it is for use in soups
Sharon graduated in 1980 from Norwell High School
studied at the University of California in San Diego
earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in Boston in 1994 and returned to California to work as an engineer in electronics manufacturing in the Silicon Valley from 1995 to 1999
moved back to the South Shore in 1999; they have two daughters
After working at Analog Devices in Wilmington and Norwood in medical and audio equipment from 2000 to 2004
Sharon left to become marketing manager at her family's seafood business
graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from Northeastern University in 1964
He did his college coop or internship at Bakers Chocolate in Dorchester Lower Mills and worked for Brady Enterprises in Weymouth
where he researched how to dehydrate fruit flavors for juices
His late son, Frederick St. Ours Jr. was a biologist who worked for UMass and traveled to Costa Rica tracking dragonflies. He was a real outdoorsman," Sharon said.
The New York Times reported in January on the green crab problem with the headline "Invasive Crabs Have Taken Over New England
Ours and company "hopes to make the crabs a pantry staple." The Times also reported that in 2023 the company received an almost $50,000 grant from Massachusetts to develop a St

as it did with the loss of your brother and for me

Unified Sports is sanctioned by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association in partnership with Special Olympics Massachusetts
more than 8,500 students participate in Unified Sports and more than 650 Unified Sports games are held annually in the state
Massachusetts had more than 110 unified track teams in the spring and 143 unified basketball teams in the fall
Some other South Shore communities with Unified Sports teams include Braintree
What is Unified Champion School Status?Weymouth will celebrate being called a Unified Champion School and raise its national banner at 12:30 p.m
Stokes said only 19 schools across the state will get the designation this year
The designation is given every four years and Weymouth qualified in 2020 and again in 2024
The only other school to qualify in 2024 was Plymouth North High School
Schools qualify as a Unified Champion School by meeting 10 standards of excellence
The standards were developed by a national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community

allowing everyone to see the value and contributions of each individual

With freshman shortstop Bella Pires breaking out in 2024 (she hit a robust .516 with 23 RBIs and 35 runs)
Weymouth forged a .500 regular-season record (11-11) before losing in the Division 1 preliminary round
a junior transfer who was one of the best pitchers (and hitters) in EMass over her first three varsity seasons at Archbishop Williams
we definitely have high expectations for ourselves," Pires said recently during an indoor workout at Patriots Athletic Club
"Being around better talent just makes everyone a better player
When I went to a different club (program) with more competition
I could definitely see myself grow as a player
and I think having Jill around will allow the team to grow as well
Consider that she won seven games in the circle as an eighth-grader at Archies with a 3.95 ERA while hitting .486 with 6 homers and 25 RBIs
she was 10-2 with a 1.15 ERA and 157 strikeouts and hit .589 with 10 homers and 43 RBIs
And as a sophomore last season she was 14-5 with a 1.04 ERA and 226 strikeouts and batted .430 with 13 homers

Ondrick struck out 17 in a 2-1 win over Needham
she struck out 15 in a 2-1 win over Braintree
"It changes everything that we're doing," fifth-year coach Vanessa Haen said of adding Ondrick to the mix
"We went 11-11 last year because we were scrappy
and prior to last year we didn't compete well (in the Bay State Conference)
Adding Jill gives us the opportunity to compete while also bringing that scrappiness (back from last year)."
Haen has been around top-level MIAA softball
having previously served as an assistant coach at Patriot League powerhouse Silver Lake
She says Ondrick is the best pitcher she's ever seen
"To see not only the control and velocity and the array of different pitches but also the mental game is remarkable," Haen said
said it was a tough decision for her to leave Archbishop Williams
as it is with joining any new team," she said
"But we're all starting to get along and I think it's going pretty well."
Ondrick worked all offseason developing chemistry with new catcher Paige Sellon
It helps that the two have been friends for a while and played together growing up
"I think she'll make me a better catcher overall," Sellon predicted

Under first-year coach Ashley Chastain Woodward
South Carolina was off to a blazing 31-8 start and ranked 10th in the country heading into this weekend's three-game trip to No
"It wasn't originally in my top 10 choices when I was being recruited last year," Ondrick said of the Gamecocks program
"But then I went to their camp during the fall and fell in love with the coaches and everything
The beginning (of the recruiting process) was stressful
Ondrick figures to share the Weymouth pitching gig with sophomore Maddie Smith
who threw a pair of no-hitters last spring
who will play first base when she's not in the circle
and Ondrick said the difference in styles could work to throw off hitters' timing if both appear in a game
the plan is to have Ondrick handle most of the BSC games and let Smith take the non-league starts
"Maddie's going to be huge for us to relieve Jill and to take games off Jill's plate," Haen said
"We can give (Smith specific games) and we'll be successful there." Haen raves about Smith's "awesome attitude," adding that she will be "a vital component of every game we play."
Throw in some promising bats such as sophomores Viv Palazzo and Abby Reed
and Weymouth's present and future appear bright
More will be expected of the Wildcats (2-1)
"I think (the players) are in a spot where they have more pressure on them than they're used to," Haen said
"but I hope they're also in a spot where they realize it's deserved pressure and it's earned pressure because they've worked their way up to it and now we're on the next step."

WEYMOUTH – The schools will need to cut positions for budgetary reasons
Superintendent Melanie Curtin said this week
the school department is grappling with a $1.9 million budget shortfall in the next fiscal year
Curtin and Assistant Superintendent of Finance Brian Smith went before the school committee Thursday night with the proposed fiscal 2026 budget
Curtin said the district cut some positions and leave others vacant
The district is proposing to leave the executive director of elementary education position open following a retirement
president of the Weymouth Educators Association
said it's time the town fully fund the schools
“We have to take the battle to them and I’m not quite understanding why we don’t
why we don’t suggest a larger budget to find a middle ground or produce what we need in our schools to make it work,” he said
Curtin said the district is doing everything it can to provide the best educational experience for all students within the budget it has
"We recognize the emotions and the fears this process brings to everybody," she said
"I can promise you that we are all putting our full attention into this."
"We understand that 5.27% is not realistic," Smith said
School officials said several factors have impacted the budget
including the end of COVID-era Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds
declining revenue and growing student needs
Smith said the projected shortfall is a holdover from a $5.3 million deficit the district faced last year
he said the district made cuts and used one-time funding sources that in part pushed some of the problem out a year
Smith also said or state aid for schools has not kept pace will growing expenses
the state will provide a net increase of less than $400,000
which is $68 per student and .45% of the total school budget
He said Chapter 70 funding has declined from funding about 35% of the budget a decade ago to about 29%
demonstrating a greater reliance on local money
WEYMOUTH – Local restaurateur Devin Adams said he had his eye on the Weymouth Landing area to open his latest venture
something he envisioned being more than another sports bar
Adams opened an Italian-inspired eatery, Brava Cucina
as brava means "good" in Italian and is also the longtime name of the building
"We want to add to the neighborhood and help create an identity for the the neighborhood," Adams said
"The goal is to figure out the trifecta: great food and beverage
they decided to turn Brava Cucina into what Adams describes as a cozy
"All pasta is made in-house with flour imported from Italy
and we want people to feel as if they had a quality meal after they leave here."
Adams said Italian food is "simple," but the key is fresh
you don't leave feeling as weighed down," he said
"We're essentially a scratch kitchen making everything in-house and constantly auditing and checking ourselves to improve."
He said the menu is approachable and easy to connect with for patrons
"There's something on there that they've been eating their whole lives
and the ingredients are treated well," he said
Some of the popular dishes include crispy brussels sprouts with apple cider reduction
rigatoni bolognese and the shrimp arrabbiatta
Brava puts a big focus on its cocktails, too. Adams said worked at Drink, Barbara Lynch's award-winning
meaning ingredients are used to their fullest potential and leaving little waste behind
the skins from squeezed lemons are then used to make limoncello
Some of the favorites is the espresso martini
which is topped with an egg custard and made with Redeye Coffee Roasters cold brew that Adams said has a "good kick."
Keeping with Weymouth's history of harvesting ice on Whitmans Pond and Great Pond
Brava also makes its ice in house and cuts it down by hand for cocktails
Parking located in the garage at the rear of the building

Accessory dwelling units by right are now the law of the land in Massachusetts
are living spaces no greater than 900 square feet that can now be built on single-family lots without the need for a special permit
The state is wielding them as a tool to address the housing crisis
Communities across the state are incorporating the state’s new policy into their ordinances
with some tailoring their rules with allowable restrictions
The Affordable Homes Act was signed into law in August with the intention of creating more affordable housing as well as opportunities for homeowners to receive rental income
The state Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities estimates that this opens the door for 8,000 to 10,000 ADUs to be built over the next five years
Weymouth is one of the towns attempting to dampen the impacts of this law by applying as many conditions as possible on ADUs
The town’s planning board said in a letter that it “voiced support for imposing as many additional reasonable regulations as possible to protect existing single family neighborhoods.”
The town council unanimously approved this language Monday
One concern expressed was whether the law would have the opposite effect on affordability
proposing a scenario in which corporations would buy homes with the intent to build ADUs and effectively turn single-family lots into two-family lots
More: State law upends work on law by South Shore community. Here's what's happening
I come out with that being more valuable now as a two-unit than a one-unit,” said Eric Schneider
does that drive up prices because you have more potential income coming from the property?”
“Until it destroys the flavor of the community
and then people don’t want to be living here,” added Councilor-at-large Rick Coughlin
Weymouth did not allow the construction of ADUs
residents were allowed to build in-law apartments
which have different requirements than ADUs
chief among them being that only family members are allowed to live in these spaces
The effort to create in-law language came to a halt
They must have a separate entrance from the main home
Allowing ADUs “by right” means that a municipality cannot reject the proposal
municipalities can’t require that the homeowner lives in the main house nor the ADU occupants be family members
That means both the main home and ADU on a single lot can be rented
Local governments also cannot require that parking be provided for an ADU that is located within a half-mile of public transportation
Here are the ADU restrictions that Weymouth put in place
ADUs in Weymouth cannot become AirbnbsOne of the restrictions that local governments were allowed to impose is the banning of short-term rentals within ADUs
no ADU or main home with an ADU on site can be used as a short-term rental
This is defined as a property that is rented for a period shorter than 30 days
existing in-law apartments do not automatically become ADUs
They must comply with the ADU regulations to qualify
While a proposed ADU that meets the town’s zoning code cannot be rejected
it will have to go through a public site plan review hearing
The reason for this requirement is two-fold
abutters who live within 300 feet of the property will be notified and have the opportunity to provide input
it allows the town’s planning and building departments to make sure the proposal follows local zoning code and its design matches the main home
ADUs in Weymouth not allowed on lots smaller than 5,000 square feetThe state law notes that an ADU by right can be built if it is no greater than half the gross floor area of the main home or 900 square feet
The town goes a step further by stating the property lot must meet or exceed 25,000 square feet
the ADU cannot be greater than 750 square feet
Weymouth’s regulations note that an ADU cannot be smaller than 350 square feet and a lot that is 5,000 square feet or smaller is not eligible for an ADU

WEYMOUTH – Interim Superintendent Melanie Curtin has been named permanent superintendent of schools.
The school committee in May appointed Curtin, who most recently served as assistant superintendent of instructional services and support, to the interim position following the departure of former Superintendent Robert Wargo.
Wargo left the district in May to take the superintendent job in Barrington
The committee recently voted to approve a three-and-a-half-year contract moving Curtin into the position permanently
Member Dana Scott said he believes the contract is "quite fair," and said dragging the process out through a superintendent search wouldn't benefit the district
"Melanie has done a fantastic job and I have full confidence she will be able to fulfill her duties and obligations," he said
Curtin has been with the district for more than two decades
starting out as a high school history teacher
She served as an assistant superintendent for about three years
and was the district's assistant director of instructional services and support prior to that
Members of the school committee spoke highly of Curtin and the work she has done as interim superintendent
Vice Chair Rebecca Sherlock-Shangraw said Curtain's transition into the interim superintendent role last spring was "seamless."
"This was the moment Weymouth Public Schools started to find its grove again," she said
Jack Murray, a student at the Maria Chapman Middle School in Weymouth, died from injuries he sustained after hitting a tree while skiing at Cranmore Mountain in North Conway, New Hampshire
