Paul Gasparro emphasized the importance of the partnership
but when you come up with a partnership with a major hospital in your area you're ensuring the future success of the program
Students will be training in one of the major locations where they will be working
You can't beat that," Gasparro said
Local career opportunities were a focal point during the announcement
with the partners aiming to ensure that local students have job opportunities to meet healthcare needs in the area

WHEELING — Local residents were politically angry enough to turn out and voice their thoughts at a Democratic-sponsored town hall Saturday in Wheeling
even though the state’s Republican federal office holders were not there to hear them
A total of 142 people signed in at the door when arriving for the event
chair of the Marshall County Democratic Executive Committee
It was jointly sponsored by the Democratic executive committees in Hancock
The town hall took place at the Iron Workers Union Local 549 hall
and many of those present wrote questions and concerns on index cards that were collected by Democratic leaders
Many of the cards were read aloud during the town hall
and Scott announced all the questions and comments would be recorded and sent to U.S
with Capito and Justice both declining and Moore not responding to the invitation
Their presence — or lack thereof — was acknowledged at the event
Silhouettes of each of the three office holders were tacked at the front of the room
and those asking questions or making comments often addressed the cardboard silhouettes
Stepping in to serve as moderators were two Democrats who sought federal office in 2024 – former Wheeling mayor Glenn Elliott
who was the Democratic nominee for West Virginia’s 2nd District U.S
The event was live streamed via the Facebook page of the Ohio County Democratic Party
A link to the recorded meeting would be emailed to each of the three elected officials
Medicare funding and concerns regarding the legal authority of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)
A question was asked about the defunding of the National Institute For Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
and why West Virginia’s elected officials weren’t more vocal on the issue
“What are they going to do when our coal miners have black lung and can’t be treated for it?” asked Sarah Wakefield
Elliott said he spent much of his earlier career working for the late U.S
who had no issues speaking out against the actions of sitting U.S
presidents – be they Republican or Democrat
“That was considered normal,” Elliott said
“We now have (congressional leadership) who are terrified of saying anything remotely critical of the president
That’s not what our Founding Fathers fought for
“We should be willing to speak up against leaders even when they share the same party.”
Both Elliott and Wendelin noted Capito has stated there would be “push back” against the NIOSH cuts
and that she and Moore had sent “strongly worded letters” voicing their concerns
They have the ultimate control,” Wendelin said of Congress
“I wish they would do more than send strongly worded letters
We have lost about 600 jobs in Morgantown and Parkersburg.”
and asked that their activities be investigated
“DOGE is one of those things that sounds great on paper
but then you see how it’s been implemented so carelessly and callously by people who have no sense of public service,” Elliott said
“They are looking at it in the sense of not what government can do
That’s not how you look at federal programs.”
Wendelin noted he spent 39 years in the U.S
“If they want to set up a department to see how government can be more effective
That’s what we should be concerned with
Ohio County Education Association President Jenny Craig
who also serves as secretary for the West Virginia Democratic Party
has been a special education teacher for 17 years
She spoke out on the recent comments by U.S
Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy Jr
“I consider myself an advocate for our most vulnerable students,” she said
“There have been misleading statements by RFK Jr
regarding autism and special needs students
“We’re facing a troubling moment in special education
one where funding decisions are poised to shift from the U.S
Department of Education into Health and Human Services under RFK.”
Craig said reports to the president from Kennedy that special needs children “cost too much to educate” are not only harmful
“but reflect a dangerous mindset to resources that could lead to the erosion of resources special needs children require.”
All marginalized students could be left without the resources they need
asked if the national Democratic campaign PACs had any plans to campaign “with money and feet” for candidates in the next election
they haven’t,” Elliott responded
“They have made a collective decision in D.C
He noted the Democratic PACs spent millions last year supporting already well-established candidates elsewhere in America
“Had they spent even a fraction of that to defeat Jim Justice in West Virginia
it might have made a dent,” Elliott said
“It’s time they wake up and realize this used to be a solidly blue state
but it’s not going to turn on its own.”
Polosky also asked if Democrats had any candidates in mind to run for U.S
“I hope I never hear the term ‘battleground state,’ because we are all battleground states,” Wendelin said
I’ll buy you a sportcoat because you need to run.”
Scott announced the Democratic National Committee executive committee met last week and determined it would send a minimum of $1 million to each state to help elect Democratic candidates
he has said we have to do better and divide the money up,” she said
But I can’t promise it will also come from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee
or the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee.”
has introduced another bill to help families save money without tax penalties
In a case that could have major implications for the American public school system

This year’s paving project will be paid using money from the city’s regular RCIP (Restricted Capital Improvement Project) fund and from the City Service Fee

Like other city paving projects in recent years
this pending contract will include not only streets but also alleys

most alleys in the city had remained untouched for decades
Many of those had fallen into deteriorating condition
the city manager noted that if the ordinance is approved Tuesday as expected and the contract is signed
the official start and completion dates for the work will be finalized
“It usually takes about 30 days after city council approval for the contractor to get all the paperwork in,” Herron said
“We anticipate starting in June.”
Bids for this year’s paving contract actually came in considerably under budget

Semper Fi Paving submitted the lowest bid for the work
Cast & Baker bid $653,808 on the paving project

WHEELING — Wheeling Park High School speech team senior Kelsey Holeczy says it meant more to her to use her voice to speak out for others than it did to attend her senior prom
Holeczy missed the WPHS prom this weekend as she competed at the JW Patterson Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky in Lexington
The end result is that she made the finals of the oral interpretation of literature competition
there were 320 schools represented at the tournament
Holeczy explained she didn’t even prepare to go to the prom after learning a year ago the school event and the tournament would take place on the same weekend
She planned to instead practice for the tournament and advance while there
“I love to share my voice and advocate for those who can’t always be heard,” Holeczy continued
that’s more important than spending $1,000 on a dress.”
Oral interpretation of literature is a category where performers prepare and present both a prose and poetry selection
Holeczy’s prose and poetry selections had a common theme of overcoming addiction and mental health struggles
She drew from “Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget” by Sarah Hepola
“It’s something I could relate to
and something my family relates to,” she explained
“It’s talked about in society a lot
People don’t always understand what it is to go through these things unless you’ve gone through them.”
Holeczy acknowledged the oral interpretation of literature category is a difficult one that requires double the practice and concentration from the presenter
“It’s a lot of extra work,” she said
It takes double the amount of time and effort
You are not doing just the same thing over and over again — you are switching back and forth.”
Holeczy was joined by three other WPHS students at the tournament — sophomore Siyanne Lopez and juniors Levi Powell and Dana Schodzinski
Leading them were speech team coaches Jen Mathieu and Isabella Droginske
Droginske expressed pride in the performance of the students
“She had to fight tooth and nail,” Droginske said
and Kelsey gave up senior prom to participate.”
Droginske added she was very grateful to the community that supports the WPHS speech team and its legacy
“Ohio County Schools allows us to compete on a national level,” Droginske said
“Sometimes we do feel like fish out of water
… There are some private schools where parents spend thousands of dollars for students to get a chance to focus on speech and debate
We are just grateful to be able to compete with them.”

Runners head through downtown Wheeling during a previous Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic
part of the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine
WHEELING — The Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine is a showcase of the entire city of Wheeling
from the many neighborhoods that make up the path of the Ogden Newspapers Half-Marathon Classic to the city landmarks that are part of the Tough As Nails Urban Challenge presented by The Health Plan
With so much of Wheeling in the spotlight that weekend
the City of Wheeling — its police and fire departments and many more — make sure to help as much as possible in making the weekend’s events a continued success
For the Wheeling Police and Fire departments
those two days are an all-hands-on-deck situation
firefighters and emergency medical personnel are found along the courses of all the events
The Wheeling Police Department can be found throughout the courses directing traffic to ensure participants can run and climb without worrying about passing automobiles
Members of the department’s Neighborhood Assistant Volunteer group also lend a hand there
Officers remain visible around the start and finish lines and around Heritage Port
where many of the food trucks and entertainment can be found
They’ll use K-9 officers and drones to see the area from different perspectives
They also work closely with the Wheeling Fire Department to coordinate responses between the two departments at Incident Command
“This is one of the marquee events the city has each year,” Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said
“Right up there with the (Festival of Lights) Parade and a couple of other events
Everyone steps up because they all know they have a mission to make sure this goes off without a hitch.”
The Wheeling Fire Department will have personnel around the courses
and some of them will be on ATVs and bicycles to explore parts of the courses that a fire engine or ambulance can’t reach
is most important when it comes to the Tough As Nails Urban Challenge presented by The Health Plan
where participants can find themselves in more remote and hard-to-get locations
Fire and emergency personnel will be available for needs like sprains and strains to heat-related injuries
Blazier said he’s always enjoyed assisting with the races
as it heralds the start of the summer season
“I always look at it as this is the beginning of summer,” Blazier said
“When the Ogden weekend comes around
We’re looking forward to good weather and the Memorial Day weekend
We’re always glad to be a part of it and make things come off nice and safe.”
Several other city departments are on the case
The operations department scours the courses to make sure barricades and signs are where they need to be
that the courses are free of debris and that adapters are connected to fire hydrants at the right spots on the half-marathon course for the aid stations
The Wheeling Parks and Recreation Department also makes its presence known
And many of the obstacles found along the Tough As Nails Urban Challenge presented by The Health Plan are either found in city facilities or are the city facilities themselves
“The entire weekend is such a positive community event that promotes fitness and family,” Herron said
“We’re happy to help any way we can
It’s just a first-rate community event.”
general manager of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register
said the city’s cooperation is integral in the continued success of the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine
“It can’t be stressed enough how important the City of Wheeling is to what we do each year with the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine,” Spanner said
“So many city departments have been so gracious with their time
efforts and resources both now and in the past
We are extremely grateful for their contributions and can’t wait for what this year’s event has in store.”

- With the regular season coming down to its final week
the Wheeling University Baseball team (13-31
4-20) gets ready for the annual "The Battle for Wheeling" as they kick-off their four-game series with rival West Liberty
The two teams will battle for the annual Inner City Rivalry cup
when they kick-off their four-game series on Friday in primetime with first pitch scheduled for 7 PM
the Cardinals will honor nine seniors who have helped the program grow over their four years with the Cardinals
The Cardinals are coming off an offensive display in their final midweek matchup with Bethany on Wednesday
The Cardinal bats broke out early and often
scoring at least one run in six of the seven inning of play on the day
Wheeling got things started with two runs in the first and added three in the second as they built an early 5-0 lead
Bethany would get their first run in the bottom of the fourth
but Wheeling had already built up a commanding 8-1 advantage
Their biggest offensive output would come in the top of the sixth
when the Cardinals put four runs on the board to get the to their offensive run total of 13 on the day
putting up two runs in the bottom of the seventh
but the Cardinal's lead was more than enough as they went on to win by the final score of 13-3
Leading the way for the Cardinals was Keaton Ference
who finished 3-5 with a home run and three RBI on the day
He was the one who kickstarted the offense
hitting a two-run home run in the top of the first that got the Cardinals out to a 2-0 advantage
It was Ference's third three-hit game of the season
with the three RBI falling just one short of his career high
Ference has been a regular in the #3 hole for the Cardinals this season and currently leads the team with five home runs and 22 RBI
It is the second time in the last three games that Ference has put together a multi-hit effort as he continues to grow at the plate
He looks to keep up that success this weekend as he wraps up his junior season at the plate
Floyd finished a career-best 3-5 with a double and two RBI
He would be a major part of the Cardinal's four run top of the sixth that broke the game open
hitting a two-RBI double that extended the score to 10-1
All nine have made a big impact during their time with the Cardinals
leading the team to the MEC Tournament twice during their four seasons and helping the program build overall
The Cardinals will look to honor them with a pair of wins and end the season on a high note
The Cardinals and Hilltoppers are meeting for the 64th and 65th times in program history on Friday night
with Wheeling leading the all-time series at 32-31
The road team has had more success in the all-time series
with the Cardinals going 13-14 at home compared to an 18-17 mark when they travel to the Hilltop
The Cardinals have averaged 4.7 runs per game in the all-time series
the winner has had to score at least five runs to win the game
First pitch for Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 7 PM at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex. You can watch the action live by clicking HEREhttps://mountaineast.tv/wheeling/ or follow along with Live Stats by clicking HERE

The Wheeling man was bound to feel lingering effects after what he accomplished
gym owner and former college football player
But Bandolik ran Illinois’ entire length from south to north — 416.44 miles from Cairo
“I wanted to be the first one to claim my home state before anyone else could claim it or document it,” said Bandolik, a Mount Prospect native and former Hersey High School football star. He documented the trip on TikTok, Instagram and through his YouTube channel
“He continues to shock and inspire me,” said his girlfriend, fellow athletic trainer and content creator Rylee Ollearis
The long-distance run took on greater significance as Bandolik planned it
Enlisting partners and sponsors such as Mount to Coast running shoes and SaltStick electrolytes to receive sales commissions plus donations from social media followers
I’d just seen how much she sacrificed for us growing up
It really made me want to give back to her,” said Bandolik
“I felt this race was really fitting to do so
I felt like it really aligned with how she lived her life
Bandolik, who in 2015 went on from Hersey to play defensive back and linebacker at Illinois Wesleyan University and now owns Chase Bandolik Training in Northbrook
traversing three counties before stopping at De Soto
Ollearis followed in her Buick Encore GX packed with clothes
or “fuel.” They bunked overnight in hotels
and has completed 100- and 200-mile runs and an Iron Man
His main event is a backyard ultra or “last man standing” race
Competitors run a 4.167-mile loop every hour
until they “refuse to continue,” as race results say
Provided Bandolik overcomes his still-swollen feet and aching hamstrings from the cross-state run, he plans to compete May 25 at the Capital Backyard Ultra in Lorton
Last year’s winner ran 270 miles in under 57 hours
It’s doubtful he’ll have to fend off angry dogs in that event as he did while leaving Cairo
“The first day consisted of a lot of being chased by dogs,” he said
five separate occasions where I was chased by dogs for almost a quarter of a mile at times.”
his followers asked neighbors to keep their dogs indoors as he approached their towns
entire schools emptied to cheer him on as he jogged by
Initially running against traffic to see what was coming
Bandolik switched to the other side of the road after trucks blasted him with wind gusts “like a punch to the stomach over and over again.”
tornado warnings were issued for the area — the exact street
a storm chaser parked on the side of the road got out of his car and yelled at Bandolik as he braved the high winds of an approaching storm
Get off the road!” Ollearis recalled the warning
and “we drove away as fast as we could,” Bandolik said
With Ollearis handling physical therapy and Dawn Bandolik assisting with foot care
Chase’s daily 41-mile average took a toll as he approached Beloit
I was struggling to even put weight on my right foot,” he said
“(Ollearis) would help massage out the area so I could get more miles and kind of chip away at it for the last few days
“So I was definitely relieved that I was able to get the distance done for the day and complete the mission.”
“We had gone on this adventure for 10 days
and we both had an insane amount of emotion through the entire journey
“There was a sense of relief and numbness at the same time.”
Phone calls with friends and family and support from TikTok fans helped him push on
“I think there’s a lot of people who helped,” Bandolik said
“I really learned that you don’t have to take on everything on your own
and things get easier when you can trust other people and rely on other people to kind of help on those big goals.”
Good advice for December, when Bandolik will try to break the world record for holding an abdominal plank, now at 9 hours, 38 minutes, 47 seconds.
“It’ll be fun to problem solve and figure out how to get this new challenge done,” he said.

He's an aggressive roster builder who harbors no sentiment whatsoever in his decision-making process
If the general manager feels like more is needed
Adam Peters is always looking for ways to improve the Washington Commanders' playing personnel
One team legend believes Peters could have a few more aces up his sleeve before Week 1 rolls around
The Commanders were aggressive throughout the recruitment period. Whether it was making bold trades, finding the right veteran players in free agency, or seizing opportunities during the 2025 NFL Draft
Peters maximized every resource to ensure this franchise is in the best possible position to build on a phenomenal first season under head coach Dan Quinn
This was a slight pivot from his original plan
but that's the hallmark of every good front-office leader
Charles Mann, a three-time Super Bowl winner and four-time Pro Bowler who spent 11 seasons in Washington, thinks more moves are coming before the Commanders' roster becomes finalized
And the defensive end believes fans shouldn't overlook the options already around
considering what they accomplished during the 2024 campaign
Peters knows what he has and what more might be needed to get over the hump. The Commanders have enough salary-cap space to make additional acquisitions. Veteran wide receiver Terry McLaurin's pending contract extension ahead of time could also provide the organization with more financial flexibility in 2025
Washington's roster looks nicely balanced right now. There are some holes to fill, namely at edge rusher, safety depth, and potentially even the running back position despite the Commanders spending a seventh-round selection on Jacory Croskey-Merritt
But that's a decision for Peters when push comes to shove
Fans know they are in the best possible hands with Peters and his accomplished staff
He'll be keeping a close eye on developments around the league
He'll also be examining the progress of his current squad before confirming any weak links that must be eradicated
And his ruthless approach provides the urgency needed for everything to come together quickly
Mann is anticipating more moves from the Commanders this offseason
Just what they'll be remains to be seen
but the team's fanbase has the utmost faith in Peters after a sensational start to his time at the helm

Walsh posted a message on social media Thursday night asking for prayers
Markwood was listed on the roster for the Walsh football team in 2022
"The Walsh University community was deeply saddened to learn about the tragic accident involving former student Kavan Markwood," the university said Friday morning
"Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with him
and friends during this very difficult time
We are hoping and praying for a full recovery."
Markwood was a linebacker in 2022 during his freshman year before transferring
"Kavan was a hard worker and make a positive impact on the football team when he was here," Walsh head coach John Fankhouser said
"He was very close with his family and that was part of the reason he wanted to move closer to home after his freshman season
Our entire team extends prayers to him and his family."
a 2022 graduate of South Allegheny High School
"Everyone at South Allegheny would say he is a hardworking
But he has it," Laura Thomson told the Tribune-Review
"He’s touched a lot of lives at South Allegheny
"He has the prayers and the support of the South Allegheny community."
Pittsburgh Public Safety said on the morning of May 1 that Markwood "remains in critical condition."
"Pittsburgh Police do not anticipate providing any additional updates to the public," it added
Markwood was a standout football player at South Allegheny High School in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. In addition to Walsh, he was on the roster for the Wheeling University football team in 2023
His Wheeling bio says he appeared in five games for the Cardinals in 2023
“The Wheeling University Athletic Department is heartbroken to hear of the tragedy that occurred at PNC Park involving former Wheeling Football Player Kavan Markwood," the school said in a statement
"Markwood was a valued member of our Cardinal family
playing with the Wheeling Football team for the 2023 season after transferring from Walsh

- As the regular season comes down to its final week of play
the Wheeling University Softball team (10-38
7-17) looks to build momentum as they make one final push for a spot in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Softball tournament
The week begins on Thursday when the team plays its final non-conference doubleheader of the season when they host Salem University with first pitch at 4 PM
After being swept by the Tigers earlier this season
the Cardinals are looking to flip the script as they welcome them to the JB Chambers I-470 Complex
the Cardinals wrapped up their road trip with a split of their doubleheader against Frostburg State
with the score sitting tied at 0-0 after seven innings of play
but it was the Cardinals who would break through for a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning
The two runs were enough to hold off the Bobcats as they completed the shutout and earned their first win of the weekend
Game two began with another pitcher's duel
with neither team getting on the board until the bottom of the fourth inning
but the Cardinals would battle back with four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 advantage
the Bobcats came right back in the bottom half of the inning with five runs of their own and it was enough to earn the split of the weekend
It was a big weekend both in the circle and at the plate for junior pitcher Maria Clark as she helped her team to the big game one victory
the junior would toss eight shutout innings for the Cardinals
allowing just five hits while walking three and striking out four
who has allowed just one earned run over her past 15.2 innings of work
she has struck out six batters while walking just four
she would come through in a key situation for the Cardinals in the top of the eighth in a scoreless game
She would beat out an infield single and singled home the winning run before a throwing error allowed a second run to score to build insurance
Clark looks to continue to take on that leadership role for her team on both sides of the ball
She served as a table-setter for the team and helped turn over the lineup at the bottom of the order
Thursday will serve as the team's final non-conference doubleheader of the season before they head into their biggest weekend of the 2025 season
The Cardinals currently hold the #4 spot in the MEC North Division at 7-19
who holds the #5 seed in the South sits at 12-14
the Bobcats would get in the tournament over the Cardinals
the Cardinals currently sit two games back of Point Park and can jump them in the conference standings with a sweep of the Sunday doubleheader
Point Park first takes on West Liberty and has a magic number of two
so if they sweep the Hilltoppers they clinch the #3 seed
if Point Park loses one of the two games against West Liberty
it will be the Cardinals holding the #3 seed if they sweep the Pioneers
The Cardinals and Tigers will be meeting for the 14th and 15th times in program history when they meet at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex
Wheeling has played well at home against the Tigers
going 1-1 compared to a 4-6 record when they travel to Salem
with Wheeling averaging 5.85 runs per game
but the Tigers have taken three of the last five games in the series
while Keke Warrix added a 1-4 day with two RBI in the effort
First pitch for Thursday's game is scheduled for 4 PM at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex. You can watch the game live by clicking HERE or follow along with Live Stats by clicking HERE

eight different Cardinals would contribute to the winning effort and they were able to seal it for the 23-6 victory
solidifying home field advantage for the Cardinals in the GMAC Quarterfinals
who had 10 goals and 11 points to hold both records
He would end up breaking the single-game points record at the 7:54 mark of the fourth quarter when he scored his 9th goal of the day to make it a 21-5 Wheeling lead
It would take him until the final minute of play to tie the single-game goal record and
with 38 seconds to go he would get that 10th goal to tie the record
Rowe has been the Cardinal's leading scorer this season with 35 goals this season
while adding 20 assists to total 55 point on the season
who finished with two goals and three assists in the effort
The senior would pick up two of his three assists during the 12-goal first half and added his first goal as the final tally in the half
He has played his role well throughout the season and looks to help the Cardinals make a deep run in this year's tournament
The GMAC Tournament officially kicks off Saturday with Wheeling hosting Davenport at 2 PM while Walsh gets the home game in the other quarterfinal matchup with Northwood at 1 PM

New decals and a new official logo have been designed for establishments located within the city of Wheeling’s new Private Outdoor Designated Area or PODA district
which is expected to begin operations next month
WHEELING — Officials in the city of Wheeling are putting all the necessary pieces together to roll out its new Private Outdoor Designated Area
The new measure will allow patrons at participating businesses in the designated downtown and Centre Market areas to leave the establishment with a legal beverage in a designated cup
Patrons will be able to walk with this open container of alcohol between participating establishments within the PODA district
“We do anticipate that area going live hopefully sometime in mid-May
but definitely before Memorial Day,” Wheeling City Manager Robert Herron said
Applications for PODA permits are currently being accepted for review by the city for business owners that wish to participate in the program
Participating establishments must be located within the designated PODA district limits and must be properly licensed through the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration
Applicants must also be in good standing with the city of Wheeling on all taxes
Members of Wheeling City Council had been discussing the possibility of implementing a new PODA district over the past year
as other cities in the state and throughout the region have already established successful districts of their own
The program is designed to help enhance community activity
commerce and nightlife while promoting local businesses
“A constant goal for city council is to create a lively downtown
encouraging residents and visitors to explore local businesses
both retail and restaurants,” said Councilman Ty Thorngate
who spearheaded the effort to bring a PODA district to Wheeling
“By permitting outdoor alcohol consumption
cities can boost economic growth and create welcoming places to live
Parkersburg and Morgantown have implemented PODA districts – also known as DORAs or Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas
Clairsville has established its own uptown DORA
The Wheeling PODA district will encompass a portion of the downtown from 10th Street extending south to Center Wheeling to 23rd Street in the Centre Market area
The district also encompasses Heritage Port and the future Robrecht Park site
stretching along the riverfront to the west and to Market Street in the downtown
in addition to an eastward stretch to Chapline Street between the alleys of Lane 7 and 15th Place
The city will post signage to mark the parameters of the district and designated disposable to-go cups for use within the PODA district are on their way
The new cups will include the district’s official logo
which was recently designed by Beyond Marketing
The logo features the image of a frothy beer glass inset in the arch of the Wheeling Suspension Bridge
The logo is also featured in stickers that downtown establishments within the district can use to designate if PODA beverages are sold
the cups have been ordered and we are in the process of formulating a website with frequently asked questions,” Herron said
“We have had a number of interested businesses that have posed questions and we’re in the process of tracking those down to make sure they’re in conformance with the West Virginia ABCA regulations.”

The loss ended an inspired two-day tourney run in which they outscored four teams, 88-29, on the way to the title game.
“Really proud of the boys, but gutted at the same time,” said Danny Neighbour, Bonnies’ coach. “We almost beat them at their own tournament earlier this year so we knew we could play with them. If we’d have connected with a couple of missed passes, it’s a different story. 7s is so tough like that. You can’t miss opportunities when they come.”
The CRC 7s national title game appearance was the first in school history for St. Bonaventure, which has reached the CRC 15s national title game twice (2021, 2023), winning the championship in 2021.
In the title game, the Bonnies controlled much of the first-half play, but lost a scrum near midfield that led to Wheeling’s first score with just over a minute to play in the half.
Wheeling took a 19-0 lead in the second half before Troy Heroldt scored on a long run to avert the shutout. The Bonnies almost cut it to a one-score game, but were stopped just short of the try zone with under a minute to play.
Bonnies reached the title game with a 19-12 semifinal win over Belmont Abbey Saturday afternoon, rallying from an early 5-0 deficit.
Harry Healy, the Bonnies’ leading scorer in the tournament (6 tries), scored off a brilliant kick-ahead pass from Scott Wilson late in the first half to put SBU up 7-5 at halftime. Healy and Heroldt scored in the second half to put the Bonnies up 19-5 before Belmont added a last-second try.
To reach Saturday’s final four, the Bonnies on Friday defeated Delaware, 26-10, Clemson, 31-0, and Iowa Central, 12-7, making a late defensive stand to thwart the Tritons.
Heroldt, Kye Terry and Manu Taula each scored a pair of tries for the Bonnies in the tournament; Heroldt added nine conversions.
All four teams in the semifinals are members of the new Atlantic Coast Rugby Conference, which begins play this fall. SBU, Queens and Belmont Abbey were members of Rugby East until this spring.
Queens, which lost to Wheeling, 38-12, in the semifinals, defeated Belmont Abbey in overtime, 17-12, in the third-place game.

WHEELING – Wheeling’s annual Fantasy In Lights parade is expected to resume its regular route next holiday season
and the city needs 58 new snowflakes to help light the way
Local organizations are partnering in an effort to find sponsors and purchase new LED snowflakes for hanging in the downtown
according to information provided by Wheeling Heritage
Members of the community are being asked to sponsor each of the holiday decorations
Community partners also are working toward having a new large Christmas tree at Market Plaza and several large dine-in igloos along the parade route that can be reserved for catering in partnership with local restaurants
Joining in the effort are the City of Wheeling
Regional Economic Development Partnership (RED)
Wheeling-Ohio County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB)
West Liberty University’s Department of Media and Liberal Arts
of Uniglobe Ohio Valley Travel and the Wheeling Chamber
Because of Wheeling’s ongoing Downtown Streetscape project
it has been a few years since snowflakes were hung in the city during the holiday season
Now it appears as though there are none remaining that can be used during the upcoming season
and many that were no longer working and were discarded
There had been hope some might be remaining and could be added in along with any new snowflakes
“There is nothing usable,” he said
“The city doesn’t have anything
The project is now revitalizing some of the energy the parade had “when it began 40 years ago,” he said
“Hopefully we will be successful this year
we will expand further and keep the excitement going
What has been amazing is the support we’ve had from the city agencies
It is encouraging to see the organizations say this will be good for the city and we will come up with 58 snowflakes by mid-November.”
Those wanting to sponsor a snowflake should go online to Wheelingheritage.org/ snowflake-sponsorship
They many also send checks payable to Wheeling Heritage Foundation
Those with questions should call the Wheeling Heritage office at 304-232-3087
