More than 150 runners and walkers were on the move this morning as part of the comeback edition of the White Center 5K
benefiting three nonprofits and returning after a pandemic-and-then-some hiatus
The participants – some costumed – started and finished at Steve Cox Memorial Park
traveling along White Center streets along the way:
Results are now browsable online; 42-year-old Joe Creighton was first finisher
Rounding out the top ten finishers was 36-year-old Abby Polley
Other finish-line sights included an entire family:
the DubSea Fish Sticks‘ mascot was there cheering finishers across the line:
Before the race, Tiltshift CrossFit from Top Hat led a warmup:
Race proceeds will benefit the White Center Food Bank

by Michelle Esteban KOMO Anchor/Reporter
— White Center neighbors were rattled shortly after midnight when two vehicles crashed through a front yard taking out the fence and plowed into the back of two parked cars
Seconds later residents said they heard multiple gunshots
I peeked outside and I see yellow flashes and loud pops," said Steve
who asked KOMO News not to share his last name
"In the moment it was pretty intense because you never know what's going on."
Steve said once he realized shots were being fired he hit the deck and hunkered down inside his house
The incident happened near the intersection of 1st Avenue S and SW 107th Street in a residential area and right in front of Steve's house
Madi Roberts lives on the other side of the street and heard it too
"I jolted out of bed to three big bangs," said Roberts
"You hear it and then your nervous system lights up and it's like something is wrong."
The King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) said before the shooting
several people tried to break into a cannabis store a couple blocks away
he was chased and then shot by the suspects
He added their store was closed at the time
their owner was out of town and their surveillance video captured no evidence of someone trying to break in
When KOMO asked KCSO about the apparent discrepancy
the sheriff's office apologized for naming the shop but offered no other details citing an ongoing investigation
We know a man was taken to Harborview Medical Center
Witnesses told KOMO News he was alert and talking to responders before being transported to the hospital
The suspects too off on foot and the victim went door to door trying to get help according to a witness who lives directly across the street from the shooting scene
He said first responders tended to his gunshot wound in his driveway
"I just really think it's about holding judge's accountable," he said
in general he thinks too many repeat offenders are in and out of custody awaiting trial
Photos and video from the scene of the shooting shows evidence markers along the street and a pickup with bullet holes in the driver's side door
We didn't lose anything huge it sucks about the fence
I'm just glad strays weren't flying through the house that would have been bad," said Steve
The sheriff's office told KOMO News there was no danger to the public
The KCSO said its Major Crimes Unit was investigating the shooting
the multimillion-dollar White House Recreation Center is tentatively scheduled to open by the end of June or early July
pending the continuing construction of its parking lot expansion
is being used to build and outfit the new center
along with a new maintenance building for the city’s splash pad
More: White House development: RV Park and recreation center move forward; Burrus Ridge doesn't
White House city officials approved a site plan in July 2022 to build the two-story rec center as part of the town center complex at Highway 31 West and College Street
The 68,000-square-foot facility will feature two full-size basketball courts and one half-court
fitness center and game room and about 200 parking spaces after the demolition of the nearby Civic Center gymnasium
which closed in March in preparation for the new center's opening
“Where the Civic Center was will be a parking lot that you can park in to go into the main entrance
but the first level will have an entrance as well … but we’re thinking that’s more so going to be for a membership-only entrance,” White House Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Whittaker said
Senior exercise programs held in the civic center were relocated to the senior citizens center
on Mondays and Thursdays on the main floor of the Billy S
Hobbs Community Center at 105D College Street
weight room and game room will be available to the public in the coming months
The main floor will have a fitness center with equipment like treadmills
weight machines and free weights and a studio capable of hosting small group classes like yoga or stretching
A gymnasium capable of seating 860 people is also on the first floor
“It’ll have a curtain that will go down in the middle to where you can basically have two full-court basketball courts going at one time,” Whittaker said
Two volleyball courts could also be played simultaneously on the gym floor
a game room and a concession stand will round out the first floor
we’re going through the process of seeing who’s going to man that concession stand," Whittaker said
“We’re really kind of going out on a limb … a separate room for esports … like console gaming or PC gaming
Esports are organized video game competitions played individually or in teams
More: Move over jocks: esports is coming to Williamson County Schools
that’s a trend that you’re starting to see in like a lot of YMCAs
in a lot of different rec centers and stuff now is that type of thing,” Whittaker said
Belong Gaming Arena announced a partnership with Williamson County Schools to begin esports programs at local schools
“We know kids are not getting outside as much and they’re wanting to be on their games and stuff
so it’s I guess an attempt for us to try to meet people where they’re at
“I’m working right now trying to get arcades for it
Additional courts and multipurpose rooms can be found on the second floor
“We’ll have another smaller auxiliary gym which will have some different type flooring on it … it’ll have a half-court basketball court on it
it’ll have two pickleball courts and one volleyball court,” Whittaker said
will encompass the perimeter of the main gym
And the multipurpose rooms could be used for community events like birthday parties
A slew of programming is under consideration for the rec center
noting that a call for proposals from residents and area instructors has gone out on social media
Some instructors may even receive a job offer
"we’re trying to hire fitness instructors as employees of the city."
Program proposals can be submitted online at shorturl.at/V8iZf

B's Meadery set to open at 9444 Delridge Way SW in the former Center Tool Rental location
it is also meant to be a community gathering place
White Center will soon be home to a new location of Mr. B's Meadery, bringing a unique and ancient beverage to the neighborhood. Brandon Eller, a White Center native and wife Krista are the owners of Mr. B's Meadery, soon opening a second location at 9444 Delridge Way SW, in the former Center Tool Rental building which closed in September
The grand opening is scheduled for February 28 at 3:30pm with a ribbon cutting at 4pm
A soft opening for Mead Club members took place Feb
The other location is in the Fremont District
The new location will feature two distinct areas:
B's Meadery is known for its wide variety of mead flavors
with over 18 rotating options ranging from dry to sweet and including fruit
Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented honey
Some popular flavors include "Dragon's Breath," a full-strength mead with ginger
and "Queen's Diamond," a lower-alcohol sparkling mead with lavender
The alcohol content ranges from roughly 3% to 11% depending on ingredients and one honey based beverage is offered that is alcohol free

B's Meadery aims to be a community-focused space
and Eller wants to create an environment where people feel comfortable and welcome
The goal is to provide a safe space where people can enjoy alcoholic beverages
There are plans to participate in community events and festivals
The owners hope to make this location a self-sustaining "forever home" for their business
The tasting room will also include a lending library and a game area plus a space to honor the former tenant Center Tool Rental
And in April or May they will open Tues and Wed 5-10pm
The owners are also open to hosting private parties and events
The location is designed with two main spaces which can be separated by a curtain to allow for private events
B's Meadery in White Center promises to be a unique addition to the neighborhood
offering a taste of ancient tradition with a modern twist
There will also be a liquid light show with an overhead projector but no televisions
The docuseries Rooted in White Center will make its official debut in March but the trailer for the film series is now out and viewable on the White Center Community Development Association website
The White Center Community Development Association (WCCDA) has unveiled the extended trailer for Rooted in White Center: The Docuseries
SEE IT HERE.
This series, part of the White Center Innovation Project, highlights nine BIPOC refugee and immigrant business innovators working to preserve the vibrancy of White Center while resisting displacement.
Keo Sanh, Owner of the Eazy Duz It Car Club, shared: "I wanted to set an example for the younger generation. Whether it’s giving back to the community, doing charity events, or teaching, it’s a responsibility. Kids are watching you. You don’t know how many lives you change."
Yesica Lopez Reyes, Owner of La Tipica Oaxaqueña, reflected: "Helping my mom start this store and continue its legacy is my way of thanking her for all the sacrifices she’s made for me."
As White Center faces ongoing gentrification pressures, the docuseries sparks critical conversations on preserving cherished spaces, exploring equitable land ownership models, and investing in the community’s cultural, economic, and political well-being.
Join the WCCDA for video screenings, community discussions, and the release of the first episode, beginning in March 2025 and continuing in the following quarters. Visit the website to watch the trailer, share your thoughts, and learn more about building an inclusive future together.
The series was directed and produced by Moses Olson. Olson has worked on projects for The American Cancer Society, Microsoft, AT&T, Sony Interactive, Nintendo, Valve's Steam, NBC, Amazon, SIFF, and a diverse array of award-winning shorts, music videos, and feature-length films.

Tim's Tavern owner Mason Reed is enthusiastic about the future of the arts in White Center and is doing his part as a community activist and by booking hundreds of live bands into his newly remodeled bar, bringing the stage inside for the first time.
White Center's live music scene is hitting a high note with the extensive remodel of Tim's Tavern, located at 9655 16th Ave SW1. Owner Mason Reed is leading the charge, his enthusiasm palpable as he discusses the future of both live music and the White Center community.
The tavern's motto, "Together In Music," is now more embodied than ever, with the remodel bringing the stage inside for the first time. This pivotal change is accompanied by new lighting and an amped-up lineup of musical entertainment, promising an immersive experience for performers and audiences alike.
Tim's Tavern prides itself on its extensive booking of live bands, among the most in the greater Seattle area vying for bands with the likes of The Crocodile, Neumos, and The Sunset.
The bar has eight taps featuring local Northwest beers, a cider, and Guinness. The Airstream bar outside adds another four taps, offering two ciders and three other beers for a total of 11 beers plus Guinness. A rotating wine list is also available, with half-price bottles on Wednesdays. Reed emphasizes the importance of sourcing food locally whenever possible, supporting local farms and producers.
The atmosphere at Tim's Tavern is designed to be welcoming and inclusive. The patio is heated, covered, and dog-friendly. All ages are welcome until 10 p.m., making it a unique space for families to enjoy live music.
Reed hopes the space is an escape from modern life where people can forget their troubles and enjoy good music.
Tim's Tavern has a rich history. It began in Greenwood in 2012 before Mason Reed took over in 2016. The name "Tim" now stands for "Together In Music," reflecting the tavern's core values. The location was occupied by Drunky Two Shoes until Tim’s took over in 2023 after moving from their original location in Greenwood.
Mason Reed himself is no stranger to the stage. Before taking over Tim's Tavern, he spent nine years touring the country as a singer-songwriter, playing 250 shows a year and driving 550,000 miles. Although his touring days are behind him, Reed still gets on stage occasionally and hopes to write another record.
Reed believes White Center can and will see more dedication to arts and is deeply involved in the White Center Business Alliance helping with community events.
With its remodeled venue, dedication to live music, diverse menu, and welcoming atmosphere, Tim's Tavern is poised to be a cornerstone of White Center's entertainment scene.

8.4El Catrin 9641 15th Ave SW Seattle
Mexican
White Center
Even in a neighborhood with plenty of great Mexican food
you’d be hard-pressed to find better tacos than El Catrin's
the restaurant's booths pack with loud groups sharing steamy tortillas that sop up guisados and black beans
Tiny mountains of sopes deserve their own sonnets
and just about all of the tacos on the menu are terrific—particularly the flaky fried rockfish and juicy carnitas with crispy edges
This is really a place best enjoyed with others
That way you can mix and match all of El Catrin’s excellent dishes
8.2Salvadorean Bakery And RestaurantSalvadoran
Salvadorean Bakery And Restaurant creates works of art in the form of tres leches cakes and savory Salvadoran treats. These—plus their pupusas, pastelitos
and pañuelos—are so good that on first bite
you might feel compelled to introduce yourself to everyone in the kitchen since they'll be seeing a lot more of you
so swing in during the weekday to pick up your pastries while enjoying a tamale or Salvadoran breakfast plate
Don’t forget a horchata to wash it all down
8.3Farmboy Bites9832 14th Ave SW Seattle
Burgers
Farmboy Bites is a food truck permanently parked at Future Primitive Brewing. And while the beer they make here is pretty good, it's really just an added bonus to wash down the awesome burgers
The menu has a few different great “smashies,” but we love the Fair Burger—a double stack of extra-thin patties with crispy wayward edges
a bunch of translucent onions smashed into the meat
8.1Dalat QuánVietnamese
This strip mall restaurant has the best Vietnamese food in White Center
A specialty is their Mì Quảng Đà Lạt—a noodle soup with spareribs
topped with peanuts and fried onions that give phở a run for its money
and we can't think of a better night spent than eating egg rolls to the sound of a funk band
7.5Young's RestaurantDiner
Ordering Mickey Mouse pancakes and egg foo young during the same meal is possible at Young's. This spot serves diner classics alongside a full lineup of Chinese and Thai dishes
and it’s perfect for sliding in on a Sunday morning when no one can agree on what to eat
the best thing here is hidden in the menu's fine print—the “loco moco style” option on the hamburger steak entree
but that’s a small price to pay for greatness in the form of a charred patty over soft white rice and topped with grilled onions
and brown gravy that floods the entire plate
Fluffy DonutDonuts
7.7Taqueria La Fondita #1taco trucks within a two-block radius—only they serve horchata and excellent tacos instead of burnt coffee and cake pops
with fatty pieces melting into crispy pork bites
and the carne asada has a strong char that seals in the meat’s flavor like a padlock
Before a walk through White Center Heights Park
7.3Best Roasted Corn StandCorn Kid
Patrick's Cafe & BakeryHawaiian
Exclusively open on Saturday through Monday, picking up a pineapple scone from this Hawaiian bakery should be at the top of your to-do list
Patrick’s haupia cinnamon roll uses coconut milk and crushed macadamia nuts to take the pastry to a new level
and the guava cake looks like something from a tea party in Wonderland
Make sure to check out their specials board
Sap Sap Lao Deli & CafeLao
This restaurant could trick you into thinking it’s just a sports bar
There are plenty of TVs (both inside and out)
and a huge bar at the center of everything
But there's no bottom-of-the-fryer tots or stale nachos here—just excellent Lao food
it may be a tame place to slurp a recovery bowl of kao piak sen with chicken broth and chewy housemade rice noodles
and prepare to party with sports fans drinking Singha and snacking on spicy chili chicken wings and crispy golden pork belly
Proletariat PizzaPizza
A long night of skating to old-school hip-hop hits (and falling on your butt) at Southgate Roller Rink requires pizza and beer for fuel
Grab a classic slice at the counter or wait just a few minutes for a fresh pie
While they have a ton of topping combinations
we love the one with prosciutto and cracked eggs
Young's in White Center is a diner that has it all—they serve American breakfast classics alongside a full menu of Thai and Chinese dishes

Today we’re welcoming a new sponsor, BECU, getting ready to open another Neighborhood Financial Center in this area
New WSB sponsors have the opportunity to tell you about themselves – so here’s BECU’s message for you:
Hey, West Seattle, a new BECU Neighborhood Financial Center (or NFC) is opening soon near you
right in the heart of White Center — on the corner of Southwest 107th and 16th Avenue Southwest — that will make financial services more accessible for over 16,600 residents in neighborhoods like Highland Park
where our team will review your finances with you one-on-one
the new NFC will provide a space for financial health classes
Our goal is for the NFC to become a valuable community resource that promotes financial empowerment through both in- person support and virtual solutions that meet our members’ ever-evolving needs
BECU has also extended support to other local organizations
and the Renton Regional Community Foundation — all of which have an ongoing history of positive impact on White Center residents
Through these efforts, BECU seeks to strengthen the social and financial fabric of your community, underscoring our commitment to creating lasting, meaningful change for our members. Visit us at BECU.org to become a member today
We thank BECU‘s new White Center NFC for supporting community-collaborative local news by sponsoring WSB
It’ll be a spooky place to go…
Yarington’s Funeral Homes used to be there
That’s kinda cool… Just moved here 2 years ago but love hearing the lore about White Center from people who remember!
Great location by the White Center library.
Do you know if the BECU location in the Roxbury Safeway will remain open with this new Neighborhood Financial Center opening (somewhat) nearby
I don’t have an answer to the question about the Roxbury Safeway BECU
but I will say that this opening is much needed
as I’ve sometimes experienced long wait times at the Roxbury Safeway BECU location. But yes
I wonder how parking will look like in that corner since there’s the apartment building above and the storage facility next door
Hopefully a couple of dedicated banking customer spots for 15-30 minutes
I can see people trying to park at the library and walking over too
White Center will be getting a new business at 9617 16th SW
(Thanks to the readers who pointed out the liquor-license application notice on the door!)
Wolfpack Cellars is a Burien-based winery that produces small lots of local, Washington wine. Customers can expect local wines, glass pours, wine tastings and a subscription wine club
The address was among those hit by the big fire in 2021 that affected seven businesses on 16th Ave
(Previously it was the location of Westside Boxing Gym.) After rebuilding and renovations
Wolfpack Cellars sources all of its grapes from Eastern Washington, including Yakima Valley and Kennewick. In addition to wine, they are also a supporter of Wolf Haven International, a Wolf sanctuary in Tenino, which customers can support by purchasing a specific blend from the winery’s website
“As for our soon-to-be White Center customers
we are very excited to meet them and officially be part of the community!” Said James Bivans
we know how great it feels to be part of a warm
accepting community and that’s what we aim to do
We want to welcome new friends who also have a love for wine
Once the White Center location opens, their current Burien location will shift to production only. You can read more about Wolfpack Cellars here
White Community Center is nearing its spring completion and city officials are looking ahead to the day it opens
members of the City Council and other city staff had an opportunity to tour the facility
Ogden City Communications Director Mike McBride said the 68,000-square-foot facility is making good time
there hasn’t been any real hiccups in the project to speak of and they’re moving along as planned,” he said
McBride lauded the headway that’s been made recently
“I toured the facility just four weeks ago and there was still dirt floors and open windows and it wasn’t quite dried-in at the time,” he said
will have several amenities — both indoor and outdoor — including sports fields
McBride said the lack of snags in construction that have plagued other major projects across the country is a testament to the entities building the new community center
“It’s not unusual for projects to get sidetracked a little bit and maybe fall behind
BHI really has done an incredible job keeping the project on time
We’re fortunate that the supply chain has been reliable
He said with construction coming close to wrapping up
officials are planning for a big celebration to bring the new facility online
“There’s going to be a grand celebration for the opening,” he said
they’re getting the software organized for memberships and reservations and everything that’s programming-related inside of the building
it’s going to be a well-rounded out program for youth and adults and beyond
It truly is a facility that has something for everyone.”

has served a diverse population and is emblematic of city leaders' outreach to some of Ogden's historically marginalized community members
The closure of the pool at the original facility in 2018 because of cracking sparked intense debate over its future
and a coalition of boosters ultimately succeeded in prodding city leaders to completely rebuild the aging complex
Demolition of the old building and construction of the new one started in mid-2023
Indeed, to many, the structure is more than brick and mortar, and the city's request for proposals from artists to handle the public art elements of the new building harkens to its roots and White's role in Ogden's history. The new structure, located at 222 28th St., is to reopen next summer
"A Black man who died in the heat of the U.S. civil rights movement, White became an important symbol for the Ogden community," the city's request for proposals reads
The building dedicated in his honor sits "in the heart of a historically Black and Latino community."

Completion of the new facility is scheduled for mid-2025
modern recreation center is significant in itself
Betty Sawyer also stressed the importance of highlighting White as its namesake
Sawyer heads the Ogden branch of the NAACP — which White led when he was killed — and organizes many community events out of the facility
future generations won't know," Sawyer said
who will travel to Ogden in April to install the artwork
didn't provide details of his plans except to say he plans a "bricolage mosaic" combining tile
painted elements and three-dimensional relief elements
He aims to highlight White's life and visited Ogden over the summer
talking with youth from the neighborhood and others
He also spoke to White's son and granddaughter as part of his research
trying to just unite the people," Reed said
and the Ogden project "fit perfect with my mission."
While Peoples, who's based in Baltimore, Maryland, couldn't be immediately reached for comment, her website says she aims to "create transformative public artwork guided by community engagement and exploration of identity and history."
According to Weber State University archives
worked in health care and ultimately joined the Ogden Police Department
he was not allowed to arrest white people or drive a patrol car
He could only ride in a car if another officer rode with him
other officers and officials came to respect him," reads the Weber State historical account
"White was also president of the Ogden NAACP
He often spoke to members of the community about discrimination in Ogden and advocated for just treatment of Blacks in employment and housing," reads the Weber State document
The new Marshall White Center will be much larger than the original and house a swimming pool
It will also house a teaching kitchen and contain space for community events
ConcernedApe reckons he could've made the decision a little tougher
Stardew Valley's creator reckons its central decision between building a community center or helping a giant supermarket chain from turning it into a warehouse was too "black and white."
Stardew Valley doesn't offer a ton of tough
except for the objective at the heart of the game
and work together with the other villagers to restore the community center
Or you can pay to turn it into a Joja warehouse - the basic rewards are the same
Speaking to PC Gamer
Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone said he would have to "lean community center," even though the decision is "one of the things I kind of regret about Stardew Valley."
"I feel like it's a little bit too on the nose with
'Joja are the bad guys and the community center is the right way to do it,'" Barone said
Nothing is ever that black and white in reality
And that was something that I wanted to have in Stardew Valley - like nuance and things - but I kind of failed in that particular aspect
who could blame Barone for siding with the community center
The player character finds comfort in rural life after having escaped a mindless office job working for JojaMart
so falling back into their clutches feels like falling back into your old ways
Maybe Barone's next game, Haunted Chocolatier
will have a little more of that "nuance" he's after
Kaan freelances for various websites including Rock Paper Shotgun
He particularly enjoys writing about spooky indies
Also has an English Literature and Film Studies degree that he'll soon forget
you will then be prompted to enter your display name

You might know it as the Pat White Center
but once upon a time it was called the “the barn” or Ben Lomond Community Center
until 2015 when the building was renamed after a woman named Pat White
Patricia (Pat) White came to Prince William County in 1963
Thomas United Methodist Church and the Westgate Women’s Club
Pat served on numerous civic committees and boards
including the American Red Cross; Voluntary Action Center; Community Corrections Resource Board; the Electoral Board; and the Prince William Board of County Supervisors
It was her work with the Westgate Women’s Club that brought her into the public eye
along with what she felt most proud of—the “Save the Barn” grassroots campaign to renovate the dilapidated barn structure on the Ben Lomond historical site
into a community center where “the young and old” could gather for events and classes could be taught
Once an integral part of the 1837 Ben Lomond Manor Estate
“the barn” managed to survive through the chaos of Civil War
the rebuilding of a war-torn county and the eventual exchange of ownership
only to rise once again in the very spot it had begun
land developers anxious to expand housing into the western parts of the county threatened to level the barn
White and the ladies of the Westgate Women’s Club banded together with area residents to launch a campaign to “Save the Barn.” The campaign was marked a success when a bond referendum
supported by the Gainesville Sanitary District
was passed by the citizens to provide the funding to restore the historical building for use as a community gathering place
the findings of a feasibility study proved renovating the old barn was simply too costly
The architects hired for the project designed a new building to closely resemble the much-loved historical barn
Ben Lomond Community Center was purchased by the Park Authority
and subsequently transferred back to Prince William County in 2012
White’s legacy of community volunteerism and her efforts to “Save the Barn,” the center was renamed the Pat White Center at Ben Lomond in 2015
the community center continues the tradition of community support by providing programming and specialty classes for all ages for the residents of Prince William County and surrounding counties
The Pat White Center at Ben Lomond is proud to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. To commemorate the milestone anniversary, the Pat White Center will be hosting a free, fall festival celebration for the community on Saturday
The event will feature fun activities for all ages
Some sporadic pockets of outages remained out but for most customers of City Light the power was back on following massive outages caused by the "bomb cyclone" storm that blew through the area overnight Tuesday and Wednesday
certainly some branches were down but a drive around the area early Wednesday looked as if a giant leaf blower had been turned on
White Center and Westwood Village were without power for a significant portion of the day on Wednesday but finally got restored
A pocket of outages persisted just south of Schmitz Preserve Park
6523 City LIght customers were out this moring.Power was still out at QFC in Westwood Village running on auxiliary power
Other stores in the shopping center appeared to be without power
White Center was out and the lights were still out in along the top of the ridge running down to Lake Burien
White Center and Burien rose to more than 13,000 as the wind from the fall storm blew through the region Tuesday night
Restoration was not expected until morning or later
An additional 2,221 customers are without power along the West Duwamish green belt north to SW Brandon Street
56 homes were without power due to wind in West Seattle shortly after 7pm from Andover Street SW to SW Genesee Street along 52nd Street SW
The estimate from City Light states that restoration was not expected until tomorrow evening
The well known 4040 House at 4040 47th SW Christmas display house was knocked out for the season by high winds as well They announced
"It is with deep regret that we announce the cancellation of our 2024 Christmas light show
a strong gust of wind caused significant damage to the display
The most important thing is that everyone is safe
we are determined to rebuild and return next year with an even bigger and better show
Thank you for your understanding and continued support."
Report an outage: Call 206-684-3000.Report a Downed Power Line: Do not touch a downed wire or anything that is touching it
Nearly 8000 people lost power around 6:30pm from Boulevard Park to Lake Burien on Tuesday night
Restoration was not expected until the morning
Another 1600 plus customers east of Military Road above Tukwila were out as well
The winds were not expected to be more than 40mph in the primary Seattle area but gusts as high at 60mph or more were whipping the area as a so called "bomb cyclone" came over the northwest from northern California
Winds were expected to moderate after midnight

BECU OPENS IN WHITE CENTER: As noted here last month, BECU (WSB sponsor) has been building a Neighborhood Financial Center in the new mixed-use development at 16th/107th in White Center
and the credit union says it’s now open
They’re planning a grand-opening community celebration at 3 pm Wednesday
Readers have asked if the Roxbury Safeway BECU mini-branch will close; a BECU spokesperson told us today
we have not announced plans for our Roxbury location.”
WAXING CLINIC:: Skiing and boarding season continues! So Mountain to Sound Outfitters (3602 SW Alaska; WSB sponsor) is presenting an “Intro to Waxing” this Wednesday (February 26)
The workshop will provide attendees with the skills and knowledge needed to keep their ski and snowboarding gear in top condition
There is a $10 ticket but that ticket cost can be used as credit toward the purchase of personal waxing supplies at Mountain to Sound
Get your ticket, and find out more about the clinic, here
a person at the Safeway branch told me that they will close in a few months. They did NOT tell me whether the new branch has parking. Does anyone know?
It would have to have parking since it’s on the corner of two busy streets
That’s good news — parking is so easy at Safeway
I’m sad to learn that location may be closing.
I love supporting BECU both personally and professionally but their branch locations are not so hot
I’m glad this wont be inside a grocery store I don’t shop at!
They are not the community gem they used to be
Most of their new (all new within last 2 years) executive management live out of state and came from problematic big banks like USAA and Wells Fargo
The service and environment has gone drastically downhill
Verity and Sound CU are far better options with true credit union values.
I spoke to a manager at the Bellevue Total Wine and he said the Westwood Village location opening is still “far away”
J Crew outlet is opening in WWV as well.
but they’re not under construction yet
just mentioned Total Wine and Panda Ex because work on those has been noticeably underway for quite some time…
Feels like they’ve been working on it forever!
Don’t understand the logic of opening another fitness center when Fitness 19 is already there. Yes
slightly different client demographic and service
but is it really necessary? There are other types of business this area needs that might do well in an area serviced by public transportation
Better than just empty storefronts I guess but I would’ve liked to see something different
I was hoping a bookstore would open in the one of the empty spaces. I miss the Barnes and Noble that used to be where the Ross store currently is. It was wonderful. When we moved here 20 years ago
Bed Bath and Beyond and Pier One (where Ulta is) stores at Westwood Village was such a positive plus for us in picking the neighborhood
Plus the Eats Market Cafe (now Wing Stop) and Jamba Juice (now Nail Salon) were delicious
I miss all those businesses too especially Pier I it was just fun to walk around and just look at everything and I miss my occasional Matcha Green Tea Blast!
For those who miss Eats Market Cafe – the restaurant (renamed as Crumble & Flake) originally moved to Cap Hill but now have relocated to Gilman Village in Issaquah if you ever want to stop by to enjoy a sweet pastry or savory sandwich (by far my fav is the Legendary Eats Reuben!). Here’s a link to their website: https://crumbleandflake.com/
It is so strange that the Westwood Village tenants don’t seem to have exclusive clauses in their leases….two burger joints and now two fitness clubs. Either the Mall managers are great negotiators or the tenants have bad lawyers.
As cherry blossoms burst and winter jackets retreat to closets
