music is able to capture moods and landscapes
It is a sign of what a deft and decisive songwriter we have in Mike Cranny that the songs we find on Many White Horses are sea-soaked and tasting of sea salt
that we get a sense of riding over the waters
of the wind on our face as we talk through these nine songs
This is music that evokes an environment and does so brilliantly
Inspired by a sailing trip around the west coast of Scotland and infused with its waves and waters
it is also essentially a solo album rather than a fully collaborative Firestations affair
But I suspect the minimalism and understatement that comes from such an approach is the album’s key
“All the Way Back Down Here” gently floats along under the power of its own sonic tides
the guitar mimicking the watery ebbs and flows of their surroundings
the flugelhorn (Laura Copsey is the one additional player) floating gently on the breeze
There are gorgeous additional found sounds and field recordings – the tones and textures
and the sounds of the boat of Reading the Water reminding me of Justin Sullivan’s brilliant Navigating By the Stars
“A Weight Stars to Lift” runs on a ’60s-infused
and “Silversands” ends the album on an ethereal and cinematic high
Never has music made me want to seek passage on a small boat and head for the Western Isles as much as Many White Horses

− Michael Blowen emerges from the garage of his home with a red Solo cup full of treats that have been ground up specifically for the 31-year-old horse he calls his favorite living thing in the world
It’s quite a statement. Blowen, 78, has a wife and a family and befriended all sorts of famous people in his years as the film critic for the Boston Globe. But as he walks toward a grassy field a few hundred feet from his house, an almost completely white horse − who just happens to be the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner − perks up
as quickly and energetically as two old men can move
explaining why the humans in his life have to take a back seat to the horse
It’s a big week for the horse who captured America's imagination in 1997 as he gutted out narrow victories in the Derby and Preakness. Though about 20,000 visitors come to see Silver Charm throughout the year here at Old Friends, the retirement farm for well-known Thoroughbreds that Blowen started back in 2003, Derby week is a different animal
And even though the infirmities of his advanced age have cost him a bit of mobility and all but four of his teeth
Silver Charm understands when it’s showtime
until it’s time for him to retire to his stall at about 3:30 p.m.
he will approach the fence and stick out his tongue
waiting for visitors to feed him a handful of his custom-made treats or shredded carrots that don't require him to do too much chewing
“He’s still just thriving being around people,” said John Nicholson
who took over as executive director and CEO of Old Friends last year
who would be the human equivalent of at least a 90-year-old
has become symbolic of the Thoroughbred world’s renewed interest in aftercare
Though the nearby Kentucky Horse Park had long been a tourist attraction where some past champions lived out their final days
Blowen started Old Friends around the same time as reports emerged that Ferdinand — the 1986 Derby winner and 1987 Horse of the Year − probably died in a Japanese slaughterhouse after an unsuccessful stud career
and it opened the eyes of people in the industry about how easy it was for even a famous and beloved racehorse to meet a cruel and tragic end if they were no longer profitable as stallions
After Silver Charm returned from his own disappointing stud career in Japan and arrived at Old Friends in 2014
he quickly validated Blowen’s theory that people would pay money for the chance to get up close and personal with stars they watched on the racetrack
the operation at Old Friends has grown to 230 acres in Kentucky
plus satellite farms in Japan and New York
with two other Derby winners − Big Brown (2008) and I’ll Have Another (2012) − now living here alongside the main attraction
QUITE A STUD: This Thoroughbred didn't win the Kentucky Derby. But he's dominating it in "retirement."
“It takes $3.5 million a year to operate Old Friends and all of our farms
and I would put Silver Charm as our chief fundraiser,” Nicholson said
and he always delivers as far as being a good public figure
he’s very aware when people are here to see him
and Old Friends will not just take in anybody’s horse
The waiting list to fill a stall here is long
helped put the spotlight on the concept of aftercare and the responsibility of horse owners to care for the animals from the racetrack to their final resting place
and the development of chip-tracking technology they hope will prevent horses from slipping through the cracks
“Now it’s a pillar of the industry,” Nicholson said
There’s not a single moment when Blowen is around Silver Charm that he doesn’t have a huge smile on his face
Even though the horse has been living here for a decade
Blowen still calls Silver Charm’s arrival at Old Friends the best day of his life and wears a baseball cap that was actually made for Baffert in 1997
Blowen became enamored with Silver Charm in the spring of 1997 when he showed incredible grit and determination to hold off Captain Bodgit by a neck at the Derby and then outduel Free House by a nose as the Preakness
Though Silver Charm led the Belmont with an eighth of a mile to go and looked poised to become the first Triple Crown winner in 19 years
Touch Gold accelerated past him in the last 75 yards to win by half a length
where a romantic fan can at least imagine the two old rivals carrying on a decades-long argument about who was actually better
which is in no small part thanks to the detailed health care and nutritional support the horses receive at Old Friends
Even though Silver Charm is long past his athletic glory and his coat is much whiter than people remember from his racing days
he still makes a good impression and seems like a horse with plenty of life left in him
“He’s lost some weight and is getting a little ribby,” Blowen says as Silver Charm walks underneath a shed that gives him some relief from the afternoon sun
It’s a subtle but poignant acknowledgement that he won't be here forever
But the gift of Silver Charm is that he still wakes up
and connects someone to one of their best memories
Whether it’s a bet they cashed on that race or a spouse they met that Derby Day or talking about whether he'd win the Triple Crown with a loved one who is no longer alive
the people at Old Friends hear a different reason every day for why fans make the pilgrimage to see him in person
“Hey handsome!” Blowen says as Silver Charm
approaches the red cup full of treats in his hand
Let's start with dessert: I had something called Funnel Cake Fruit Pierogi
The name of the dessert has words that usually don't go together
it was one of the best damn desserts I've ever had
How do you even think of making funnel cake pierogi
and it was an explosion of delicious taste
This dessert was the end of yet another delicious meal from one of the most unique eating establishments you'll ever visit
79 sits literally about ten feet from the busy White Horse Pike in Mullica Township
(It has a Hammonton mailing address - you may see that pop up on your GPS.)
The restaurant bills itself as "Polish Italian Fusion"
you're going to find some very unique food
dishes you won't find anywhere else - and probably food combinations you've never imagined.)
I've visited several times in the last couple of years
and there's so much more that I want to try
Below is some of the food I tried on my most recent visit
you're going to find lots of dishes with kielbasi and pierogis
I'm pretty sure it WILL cure your hangover and I'm pretty sure it will put hair on your chest
Imagine perfectly prepared french fries topped with tender short rib - and then add truffle oil and top with mozzarella
I could really have just ordered 2 or 3 orders of this and been done
Why isn't everything seasoned with truffle oil
Take some great Chicken Parm and make it different
One of the really cool parts of eating at No
79 is the fact that you sit there and wait for your food
and you watch everyone else's food come out past your table
My go-to is the Saucy Murray: a perfectly cooked Angus burger
topped with deliciously melted cheddar cheese
Make sure you ask for plenty of extra napkins
"Regular" or sweet potato fries are among your choices
I have the regular fries with their own in-house seasoning
but it's not - it's actually better
you'll find an explanation for the name of the place:
"The number 79 popped up often during the building process
so we decided to look into it a little closer and found 79 is an Angel number
Every Angel number has a meaning and 79 means to Pay it Forward
Considering we are a community-based establishment
we felt the mantra was fitting and it stuck with us

White Horse Hill National Game Preserve near St
is on track to playing a bigger role in ongoing efforts to restore North American bison populations with the recent addition of a low-stress handling facility on the preserve
The handling facility allows personnel to capture and safely move bison to other National Wildlife Refuges or into Native American tribal herds instead of culling them to maintain genetic diversity
Fish and Wildlife Service conducted an initial Bison Capture Operation (BCO
in fed-speak) at White Horse Hill in mid-October
a retired wildlife biologist for the Fish and Wildlife Service in Devils Lake
The bison capture operation was Fisher’s last project as a federal employee
“It went extremely well,” Fisher said in an interview after his retirement
“It’s kind of a big deal for (White Horse Hill) because now we can move our animals out of White Horse Hill and be a player in the U.S
Department of the Interior’s bison recovery project
Two bison yearlings were captured and moved to the nearby Spirit Lake Nation as part of the day-long effort on Oct
The yearlings now can contribute to the genetic diversity of the Spirit Lake herd
Visitor Services manager at White Horse Hill
Funded by the federal Inflation Reduction Act
the new low-stress facility at White Horse Hill features a circular “spin pen design,” allowing animals to be moved psychologically rather than mechanically
don’t call it a roundup; it’s a “capture operation.”
“I grew up in Minnesota around dairy farms
it was cattle prods and squeeze chutes and pushing them where they didn’t want to go,” she said
low-stress handling is “all about letting the bison choose where they want to go,” Graue says – with gentle nudging by White Horse Hill staff
The facility’s spin pen design features a series of spiraling “layers,” or alleys
the bison start out in the center of the pen and gradually move to the outer alley through a series of gates
it’s kind of like a game of follow-the-leader
The psychological part comes in the “spin,” so animals will always desire to move forward through see-through gates
Graue said; it looks like they have a place to go rather than up against a wall or dead end
you close the gate behind them and staff can either send animals out of the facility
or forward toward the squeeze chute to provide a small blood sample for DNA testing,” Graue said
“We also installed a non-visible microchip so these animals will be permanently marked for future identification.”
The spin pen also has overhead catwalks that provide a safety zone for personnel
while allowing them to safely walk toward the front of the bison
“Predatory instinct is chasing an animal from behind,” she said
bison – gets nervous and stressed and is always wanting to look back and escape from that predator
if we have an animal that we want to move forward
we actually get ahead of them and walk toward them,” she said
they think they’re smart because they’re sneaking past us
it’s really about moving them psychologically instead of mechanically
which is an interesting and highly effective concept.”
The facility is approximately half the size of a football field
and is situated on the bisons’ winter feeding grounds at White Horse Hill; it will stay up throughout the year
“The idea is that we will open the gates once the animals start grazing again in the spring,” she said
so they’re used to going in and out on their own
They get comfortable being inside the facility.”
are let out of the pen before reaching the squeeze chute
Calves and yearlings are run through the chute
where personnel can easily collect blood and DNA samples
The calves are then sent back out of the facility to rejoin their mothers
while the yearlings being moved off White Horse Hill are sent to a holding pen for a day until they can be loaded onto a truck and trailer
“The idea with the low-stress handling is we’re not on a time schedule,” Graue said
“If you try to put the bison through on your time schedule
During the inaugural bison capture operation
the two yearlings were moved to the Spirit Lake Nation herd
and five calves born in 2024 went through the squeeze chute
All adult bison were released from the pen without going through the chute
“The only stressful part of the operation occurred when we would separate an adult cow from her calf,” she said
but that was very brief and only lasted about five minutes
The two yearlings that went to Spirit Lake received U.S
Department of Agriculture-chipped ear tags
while the five calves born this year had blood drawn for genetic testing and received internal chips just below the skin
wildlife veterinarian for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department
was also onsite for the capture and testing effort
Before the low-stress handling facility was onsite
the Fish and Wildlife Service culled yearling bison at White Horse Hill so they wouldn’t inter-breed back into the herd
The meat then was donated to Spirit Lake Nation for distribution to tribal residents
was to maintain the genetic diversity of White Horse Hill’s relatively small bison herd
which numbers 16 animals after the recent capture operation
we didn’t have the staff or the facilities or the training to be able to work with bison on the ground,” Graue said
and so our herd was progressively getting older unless we brought in other animals because we were not able to process and ship animals out alive.”
Genetic testing has shown the White Horse Hill bison herd to be about 99.9% pure bison
are direct descendants of Plains bison that were brought to White Horse Hill in 1918 from the Portland zoo in Oregon
it was estimated that less than 500 bison existed in the United States anywhere – “and most of those resided in captivity or zoos,” Graue said
the bison from Oregon were supplemented over time with animals from Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge in Nebraska and the National Bison Range in Montana
White Horse Hill has received animals from the Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR in Colorado
“The future for bison conservation is very bright in the U.S.,” Fisher said
“It is a very slow process to recover such an iconic wildlife (species)
private landowners and government herds have accomplished this
It has taken over 100 years to achieve a bison herd of over 18,000 animals
which possess exceptional genetic integrity and virtually zero cattle ancestry
“Our genetics work shows us how our animals continue to become more diverse annually
and we will always maintain a lack of cattle ancestry
the bison produced at White Horse Hill will contribute to bison conservation across North America
a new Popeyes Chicken restaurant for the White Horse Pike in Lindenwold is under construction with a significant portion of the wall foundation already in place
This new quick serve restaurant is being developed on the White Horse Pike at the intersection of Oak Street
Next door (across Oak St) is Pike Liquors. McDonald’s and Wawa are also very close by
This property previously housed a small bank building which of course was demolished ahead of this development
42Freeway first wrote about this then planned Popeyes back in January 2023 ahead of its meeting at the London wall joint land use board
Last fall I saw construction bidding activity taking place
where the franchisee was looking for the developers to build out the new Popeyes… a clear indication at the time that the restaurant was still coming
In my visit last week… well as you can see in the drone images
the outer wall foundation has been poured and a significant amount of interior PVC plumbing lines have been set ahead of the pouring of a concrete floor
That being said I think there’s still additional underground utility work to be done
The project calls for a 3,030 square foot building which will support 36 seats inside. There is no outdoor seating but of course they will have a drive-thru
Interior renderings for the project which were submitted to Lindenwold show a modern design featuring a brighter white interior design with black metal accents
If this actually ends up being the final color scheme for the space
it will be a nice change from other fast food restaurants which are going with a more darker grey “modern urban” interior
Floor to ceiling windows for a large portion of the dining area will also brighten things up
At this time I do not have any dates regarding the opening
but again the good news is construction has started
Sticking with that theme I know I wrote about approvals for Popeyes restaurants in Runnemede (2022) and Winslow Cross Keys Road (2021) and I also don’t have any updates on them

Rhode Island started many things before the country was even founded - settlements
In fact, the state's oldest restaurant is over 100 years older than the country. First built as a home residence for Francis Brinley in 1652, the White Horse Tavern opened for business in 1673
making it the oldest standing restaurant in not only Rhode Island
Throughout its more than 350 years of business
the White Horse Tavern has played an important role in Rhode Island's history
first serving as a meeting place for the General Assembly of the Colony of Rhode Island and later becoming a favorite spot for business lunches between state councilors
Today, America's oldest tavern is a National Historic Landmark serving up New England cuisine in a cozy atmosphere full of colonial charm
White Horse Tavern embraces its identity as a New England destination
serving sophisticated local fare sourced from Rhode Island's farms and waters since its opening
the culinary team strives to create a fresh
Menu items include New England classics like bacon wrapped scallops
in addition to a full raw bar and fresh catch of the day
White Horse has an extensive wine list with options from all over the world
which won the restaurant a Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator
The tavern is open for dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Reservations are recommended to be made two to four weeks in advance
White Horse Tavern is located at 26 Marlborough St

the iconic White Horse silhouette sign is again perched high above the White Horse Pike in Lawnside NJ
And the area residents are excited to see the landmark horse watching over the community
for over 50 years (starting in the 1960’s) a large White Horse silhouette sign stood on a freestanding tower in the parking lot of the Lawnside shopping center. In 2014 that sign was removed
likely due to concerns over its age and risk of structural failure
At the time the sign was removed many had hoped it would return… but ten years had passed and hopes faded
But yesterday area Facebook town groups were abuzz as locals were happily surprised to see that the iconic White Horse sign had returned high above the well traveled White Horse Pike… sitting atop the very tall roadside shopping center sign
Industry contacts first told me who financed the sign, and now the company behind this awesome gesture has confirmed… Lomax Carpet and Tile Mart
Lomax Carpet and Tile Mart opened a large flooring warehouse showroom in the Lawnside shopping center just this past November
taking over a large portion of the former Kmart building.
The full story is that the Lomax team acquired the entire Kmart building
and when it came time to upgrade the shopping center signage to include their own business… Lomax owner Michael Longwill and the team chose on his own to recreate the locally beloved White Horse sign
This morning I inquired with Lomax about the sign and heard back from Lawnside store manager Jason Hartley who shares…
Lomax Carpet & Tile Mart has fully financed the sign for our store and all the businesses in The Historic Lawnside Village
it will look even more spectacular once all the electric is set up and our digital display is up and running
where this building that has been vacant for many years
Hoping it grabs the attention from White Horse Pike drivers and invites friends and family to join us to make an amazing shopping experience for their flooring needs.
Honestly it’s an awesome gesture by the Lomax flooring company as while they definitely wanted to put their business on the main roadside sign tower… they did not have to take on the extra expense to recreate the White Horse sign!
Last fall Lomax owner Michael gave me a tour of his new Lawnside store which offers a huge selection of flooring including hardwood floors
epoxy flooring (perfect for garages) and even natural stone countertops
Michael gave me an awesome compliment by saying when he was deciding to purchase the building, he had read my prior article on the space (which in 2022 was planned to be a indoor storage facility)… and Michael said he really enjoyed reading about the history of the property
which goes back to when the White Horse Drive-In movie theater was the first commercial development in the extended shopping center properties
And it seems a connected with him so much that when it came time to upgrade the sign for his Lomax Carpet & Tile store
he chose to put out the extra expense to bring back the beloved White Horse sign
Absolutely it’s an exciting thing for the community to see the iconic sign back along the White Horse Pike
To be clear though it appears to be a completely brand new fabrication
designed to fit within the roadside shopping center signage
That being said it is a perfect homage to the original sign
and also calls out “Historic Lawnside Village”
As I called out in my article back in May of 2022
this property previously was home to Kmart/Sears and prior to that was home to a Rickel Home Center
While I do not know the exact dates of when the building was operated as Rickels
I do know that at least through the 70s and early 80s they were located there
But the history of the White Horse sign goes back even before that… when a portion of the property was home to the White Horse Drive-In movie theater
Opened in the 1960s on the property where Home Depot is located today
in order to market the drive-in theater to the broader community (and cars driving by on area roadways)
the drive-in ownership in the 1960s installed a tall tower and placed high above it a large silhouette White Horse sign
This was one of two similar marketing ideas as over on the Black Horse Pike in Camden another drive-in movie theater had a matching horse signage tower… but in matching the “Black Horse Pike” name of the roadway
Looking at imagery at HistoricAerials.com it appears that the Lawnside drive-in did not last long. While the drive-in is clearly visible in the 1965 aerial photo
it was not there in 1963 and by 1970 the property had already being developed with commercial retail buildings… meaning the Lawnside drive-in likely only lasted around 5 years
But the White Horse tower sign remained for 50 years
and with the installation of a new sign… let’s hope its another 50

It’s the biggest undertaking by far that we ever have taken on...Everyone involved in the project has demonstrated an amazing commitment to the vision for historic preservation
use of period materials and means and methods in this renovation and rejuvenation project...We intend for this historic gathering place to be here for generations to come
The renovations included a state-of-the-art-kitchen

Once the staff at White Horse Black Mountain were able to get cell service back after Tropical Storm Helene hit Western North Carolina
membership coordinator and communications director
the staff was focused on how to help the community
“The first order of business was to support those nonprofits in our community in Black Mountain and Swannanoa who are addressing the first healing work of life and security,” Hilemon said
the White Horse Community Fund was established with the goal of raising $406,000 for four Valley nonprofits
White Horse Director of Operation Zach Hinkle said the four nonprofits – Bounty & Soul
Black Mountain Counseling Center and Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry – were chosen because White Horse has worked with them before
More: White Horse Black Mountain purchases its building with help from community member donation
“These four nonprofits are the ones that we could see would have real
meaningful impact in the immediate aftermath,” Hinkle said
“We trusted the leadership of these nonprofits to stretch the dollar and be really efficient with the use of funds.”
the goal is to raise $144,000 for Bounty & Soul
Hinkle said this will provide 300 meals each day for 30 days
For help with providing home repairs to those impacted by Helene
the White Horse Community Fund has a goal to raise $110,000 to Hammer & Heart
These funds would help repair a minimum of 15 homes according to Hinkle
He said the community fund aims to raise $60,000 for the Black Mountain Counseling Center to help facilitate mental health services to those impacted by Helene
The goal for Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry is to raise $92,000 to for the nonprofit's heating assistance program
The community fund has currently raised more than $100,000 toward this $406,000 goal and has been making donations to these nonprofits already
both as funds come in and nonprofits need those funds until we reach that goal of $406,000,” Hilemon said
To raise these funds, Hilemon said the White Horse, a nonprofit itself, turned to donors outside of the Swannanoa Valley that were not impacted by Helene
shows and other events at the White Horse have moved to a donation model where patrons pay what they are able
50% goes to the performers and the other 50% goes directly toward the community fund
“It means you can feel really good about going out and having a night of community and positive energy and perhaps even healing for yourself,” Hinkle said
“Because the money that you’re going to be donating at the door is going to help your community.”
In addition to the work being done with the four chosen nonprofits
the White Horse is still holding benefits where acts donate their time to a specific cause and their 50% goes to another cause
with the other 50% going to the community fund
Hilemon said once the White Horse staff came together

“The White Horse has always been a place where people get to come together and be in community
and that means celebrating together and grieving together
and we all know that live music and art heals us in ways that maybe nothing else can,” Hilemon said
“The only path forward was to play an active role in the healing of the place and the people that we love.”
While the White Horse is collecting donations for the community fund
She said once the $406,000 has been raised
the nonprofit will turn efforts to keeping itself open
that means raising $120,000 for the White Horse
Hinkle said it is important to note that the White Horse is not asking for donations from anyone in the Swannanoa Valley community for either the community fund or the White Horse itself
Hinkle said the ask is for people to come out to shows and pay what they can and also to become a member of the White Horse
“We know that for some people that’s a stretch,” Hinkle said

a safe living room where you can listen to music and feel really good.”
Hinkle said the White Horse is also offering up its space for free to organizations who are bringing the community together
Hilemon said it’s an “honor” to open the White Horse in this way
“We feel really honored to partner with these folks and the good work that they’re doing,” Hilemon said
“It’s an honor to use our space and our capacity in that way.”

Bo's quick actions were instrumental in preventing what could have been a far more severe situation
a series of events set off a chaotic chain reaction that affected several horses
but soon turned perilous when horses clipped heels
two of the horses began running counterclockwise
which only added to the confusion and potential danger
outrider Bo Butler demonstrated remarkable skill and presence of mind
Butler swiftly pursued one of the wayward horses
with several horses still racing at full speed towards him
In a display of quick thinking and expert horsemanship
Butler guided the horse towards the outside rail
avoiding an even more catastrophic collision with the racing pack
his horse collided with another horse at full speed
The next thing Bo remembers was waking up in the hospital
training and heroism highlight the critical role outriders play in maintaining safety on racetracks across the industry
"The RTCA White Horse Award goes to someone who is considered a hero
Bo selflessly realized that he had to go out there and get that loose horse to save the other horses and riders that were bearing down on him
I'm sure he didn't even give it a second thought
That's valor and a heroic effort
We've got an RTCA White Horse Award recipient here at Fonner Park and that makes me very proud."
Construction has started on a large three story 112,000 square foot storage facility on the White Horse Pike in Magnolia
Earlier in the summer the property was fully cleared and already contractors have poured the large square concrete foundation pad
The project is being developed across several lots situated between Produce Junction and the Regency Court Apartments. The now cleared lots for the storage facility were home previously to Warwick Auto Sales
a building which previously housed Sterling HVAC
the Colombo liquor store is located directly across the street from where this new storage facility is being developed
The upcoming Storage Facility building seems to fit nicely in the space
particularly since storage facilities really don’t require a lot of dedicated parking. The rear property line is wedged out on one side which made for a perfect place to put a water management retention basin in
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to acquire in advance the full plans or rendering for the building
but as mentioned it’s three stories tall
42Freeway first wrote about this project in December of 2023 but it appears to have been in the approval process for several years with Magnolia
as it is also part of a non-condemnation redevelopment plan with the borough several years before the developer submitted an application for the storage facility
The project is being developed by Nuvo Development Partners who seem to specialize in storage facilities
as I write this on Monday September 23rd it appears their entire website is not functioning at the moment
I was hoping to see if there were renderings of the completed storage facility at their website
they typically sign-on with a large self storage company for branding… I am not aware of the brand at this time
I did locate a press release from TalonVest Capital related to the project
They are a boutique self-storage and commercial real estate advisory firm
who back in may announced the successful negotiation of $16.8 million for the development of this Magnolia storage facility
Magnolia designated this property a redevelopment zone back in 2019. Redevelopment zones are created by towns to entice growth and investment in properties which are in in need of a real rehabilitation… via special zoning rules or even favorable tax benefits
Prior to the clearing and the start of development
the prior properties were actually in somwhat rough shape… clearly a good candidate for a redevelopment zone effort
Another storage facility is being developed in Somerdale NJ (unrelated owners) but I did not stop by today for an update on that location
Last I drove by about six weeks ago I believe the building was mostly standing already
Nuvo Development is also proposing a storage facility on Route 73 in Mount Laurel directly next to the Walmart parking lot… In an area close to the route 295 exit

White Horse Theater Company will continue its mission of re-examining American classics and shedding new light on seldom-produced works with "Three by Tennessee" - a celebration of the one-acts of Tennessee Williams
In "The Lady of Larkspur Lotion," directed by Cyndy A. Marion, a delusional, impoverished woman clings to fantasies of wealth while clashing with her cynical landlady until a sensitive struggling writer who shares her desire for illusion, comes to her aid. Featuring Laura Fay Lewis, Michael Wiener, and Nancy Wolfe
"Something Unspoken" is Williams' 1951 two--hander that explores the unspoken tensions between a wealthy Southern woman and her devoted secretary - revealing themes of power, repression, and unacknowledged desire. Directed by Cyndy A. Marion and featuring Linda S. Nelson and Laura Siner
Williams' classic "At Liberty" is directed by Yonatan Esterkin and features Margaret Curry and Leslie Alexander in the story of an aging
disillusioned actress returning home to her overbearing mother and torn between her dreams of stardom and the painful reality of her unfulfilled ambitions
Says Producing Artistic Director Cyndy A. Marion, "White Horse has a reputation for staging acclaimed productions of Williams' plays and the material couldn't be more relevant. The themes of fantasy vs. reality, optimism in the face of adversity, vulnerability vs. brute force, and having the courage to be who you are in a repressive society are all very significant in the current political climate."
Following the sold-out, critically acclaimed run of The Master and Margarita, Or, The Devil Comes to Moscow, Theater 86 will present a bold new stage adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers.
The Classical Theatre of Harlem is among a number of New York cultural institutions that have lost critical federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts due to recent directives from the current administration.
CreateTheater, under the artistic direction of Off-Broadway producer Cate Cammarata, has announced the return of its annual New Works Festival. Now in its fourth year, the Festival is presenting three brand-new musicals and five original plays to the NYC theater community.
The Other Side has announced the extension of its critically acclaimed immersive thriller Down the Road through May 31, 2025. Down the Road draws its power from the immediacy of proximity-placing audience members just inches from the actors.

A new Chipotle fast-casual restaurant opened today in Barrington NJ on the White Horse Pike
Located at an intersection which is also home to Chick-fil-A and Wawa, the all-new construction Chipotle was developed on a property which previously was home to the Timeout sports bar. Chuck Lagers restaurant is also at the intersection, but they closed last month.
it is an international chain of fast casual restaurants specializing in bowls
tacos and burritos which are made right in front of the customer
The ordering process is somewhat similar to a cafeteria assembly line where you first choose your style of entrée (bowl
tacos) and then moving down the line you tell the staff what ingredients to include “Bowl with brown rice
I first wrote about the plans for this Chipotle just over two years ago
when the development team presented their plans to the Barrington Joint Land Use Bboard
the site sits next to Victor Liquors and at first it felt like the property was a little small for the development… but now that Chipotle is completed and the restaurant is open
it seems like a perfect size for the restaurant
Inside there’s a good amount of seating (likely over 3 dozen seats)
a nicely sized outdoor patio in the front with additional tables and chairs
Chipotlane is the Chipotle order pick-up window. It seems very similar to a traditional fast food drive-thru except with the Chipotlane you cannot order in the drive-thru lane… it’s simply a quick and easy way to pick up orders that have been previously placed online via the mobile app or website
The exterior of the building has a very recognizable Chipotle style to it with its rectangular shape
Both the front and the long side of the building features 8 foot tall all-glass walls which are perfect for bringing the outside into the restaurant… you almost feel like you’re dining outside
but you get the benefit of nice climate-controlled conditions
While Chipotle has been very active in the South Jersey communities developing new locations including recently opened Bellmawr and brooklawn
this White Horse Pike location should find eager customers in area community such as Barrington
Audubon… as well as being close to the route 295 exit

U.S. government returns 680 acres to the North Dakota tribe
The Spirit Lake Nation is celebrating the return of 680 acres of land that was stripped away more than a century ago from its original treaty territory

"This return of land is a significant step towards healing and reconciliation,” said Spirit Lake Chairwoman Lonna Jackson-Street
we are grateful for the support of our partners in the government and the recognition of our rightful claim to these lands.”
The land was carved from the tribe’s 1867 treaty territory by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905
it was deemed "submarginal lands" and and was designated to be excess to the needs of the game preserve
The Spirit Lake Nation formally sought the return of the lands as part of a broader movement by Congress to return submarginal lands to Indian nations
the Fish and Wildlife Service retained the lands for hay production to support the buffalo population at White Horse Hill
Yellow lines wrap around a 680 acre parcel of land recently returned to the Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota from the U.S
which manages the federal government’s real estate portfolio
“The community is excited and thankful for the leadership of the tribe
who worked collaboratively getting our land back," said Spirit Lake Tribal Councilmember Darren Walking Eagle
The returned property all lies within the original 1867 reservation boundaries and includes areas with native and medicinal plants the tribe intends to preserve
The returned land also offers some development opportunities the tribe may explore
"It does offer the potential to expand our medical facility and build housing
but there are no definite plans at this time," said Jackson-Street
there are 300 other acres of federal game preserve land that the tribe seeks to have returned
"Our leadership and community are hopeful regarding the return of lands back to the tribe," Jackson-Street said
Multiple emails and voicemails left to representatives from the Fish and Wildlife Service seeking details about the land transfer were not returned

The Arby’s Restaurant in Magnolia on the White Horse Pike closed about 2 months ago
but their website still shows them as open… but only on Sundays! Ha
So as you would expect the Magnolia Arby’s is 100% closed, and a call to the support team fully confirmed that closing. When I brought the location page (and hours) to their attention they told me it must some technical glitch for the location
But those Sunday-only hours have been picked up by Google’s business listing
and a even caught the attention of a Yelp reviewer who wondered about the odd operating hours
Not that a call was needed to customer service… as all of the Arby’s branding and signage has been removed from the building
but I chatted with Arby’s today fully clarify what’s going on with the hours
And more closely to the 42Freeway “wheelhouse” style storyline, it appears nothing is immediately planned to take over the space, and a commercial real estate sales firm has the property listed as Available For Lease
Sometimes business just close… and there isn’t always someone waiting to move right in
This closed Arby’s is located next to Lowe’s Home Improvement and in front of Bill’s Wonderland of Pets
Arby’s has other South Jersey locations open; Deptford, Turnersville, Audubon, Evesham and Willingboro. Check their location page:
In a nerdy “42Freeway Way” it’s mildly funny to go to the location page of Arby’s and see that they list the Magnolia location is listed right along with all the other still open New Jersey restaurants
When you click through to the Magnolia property page… it literally just offers Sunday as the hours
And those “Sunday only” hours have been picked up by Google
So while it would seem far-fetched to think a fast food restaurant would be open just one day a week
All the other Arby’s are open 7 days
They closed the location in Berlin and now the Magnolia location is only open on Sundays
Maybe that Yelp reviewer was being a bit “tongue-in-cheek”
Surprisingly the online ordering buttons for the location are still functioning as I write this
and I quickly got as far as placing a full pick-up order for the closed Magnolia Arby’s location… and following their own listed hours the website suggested Sunday at 10:15 AM as the first available time
So I first heard about this location closing back in early October and stopped then… at the time the signage was still in the building and a note was in the window saying they were closed
I didn’t initially report on the closing as I was trying to find out if the franchise operator had plans to bring in a different restaurant(s) brand
which is something they did earlier this year in Berlin NJ
Now don’t jump ahead… Unfortunately nothing is planned for the Magnolia location and it’s being marketed as “available for lease”
So today I finally decided to put something online after getting another message from of reader regarding the status of the property
They fully realized the location was closed
but were asking if something was planned to come in to take over the property
And then this morning I just so happened to be on the White Horse Pike to see that the building has now been completely stripped of all of its branding and signage… even the printed menu board for the drive-thru is blank
So now the fate of the former Arby’s Magnolia building awaits a businessperson who sees value in the building and location
and decides to invest in opening their business there
Soloff Realty & Development lists the building at 3,035 square feet with 38 parking spaces

I’m sure he didn’t even give it a second thought
We’ve got an RTCA White Horse Award recipient here at Fonner Park and that makes me very proud.”
The only mystery is why there are still so many in Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing unwilling to face the problem squarely enough to help solve it
