White Rock Coffee is celebrating its 20th anniversary in our neighborhood this May with a special coffee blend
The local coffee brand’s journey started in our neighborhood in 2005 when Lake Highlands neighbors Nancy and Robert Baker opened the “mothership” on Northwest Highway
a Specialty Coffee Association-certified roasting facility and barista training center opened in 2017 sits next to the original location and six more White Rock Coffee locations have been added throughout the city
The brand is still focusing on neighborhoods and sustainability
“We started with the simple idea of being part of the community,” said Nancy Baker
Co-Founder and Co-Owner of White Rock Coffee
“And that spirit continues to guide everything we do — from how we source our coffee to how we serve our customers.”
The brand is marking the anniversary with a special medium roast coffee blend
which is described as tasting of chocolate-covered cherries
White Rock Coffee will celebrate the anniversary with giveaways and customer appreciation events
with more details to be announced at a later date

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was probably the furthest thing from the minds of Jack White and Meg White when they stepped into a gritty Cass Corridor bar to play their first gig for a handful of folks
the White Stripes are indeed headed for posterity in the hall of fame: The Detroit duo is part of a 2025 class of inductees revealed Sunday night
When the White Stripes are officially inducted during a Nov
they’ll become the 22nd Detroit artist enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s prestigious performer wing
when Aretha Franklin was the rock hall’s first female inductee
The 2025 honorees were revealed Sunday night on “American Idol,” part of a broader RRHOF-Disney-ABC alliance that will include a live stream of the Nov
8 ceremony on Disney+ and a later special on ABC-TV
In the years following their summer 1997 debut at Detroit’s Gold Dollar, the White Stripes became flagbearers for a raw, minimalist movement broadly known as the garage rock revival, leading a wave of bands such as the Strokes and Black Keys. The Detroit duo drew on a deep well of hometown influences for its blues-brewed sound
with Meg White’s straightforward drumming undergirding Jack White’s explosive guitar and expressively yelped vocals
Their music was accompanied by a signature red-and-white aesthetic and a whimsical mythology that portrayed the duo as brother and sister
(They were in fact a formerly married couple.)
Before they bowed out in 2011, the White Stripes served up six studio albums and hits such as “Hotel Yorba,” “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” “We’re Going to Be Friends” and the crowning “Seven Nation Army," whose riff endures as a popular sports-stadium anthem around the globe

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame also announced 2025 inductions in other categories

Sunday’s announcement presents immediate intrigue: What will be Meg White’s involvement come November at L.A.’s Peacock Theater
Beyond occasional spottings around Detroit
the Grosse Pointe Woods-born drummer has been a reclusive figure since the band’s 2011 split
So would she join Jack White for a White Stripes reunion set
Those aren’t unprecedented questions at the RRHOF
where history is lined with drama involving original band members — including contentious situations among the likes of Kiss
There’s no apparent animosity between Jack and Meg White — she regularly attends his Detroit solo concerts — so that wouldn’t seem to factor in here
We can assume Jack White is up for some sort of live performance on Nov
8: The southwest Detroit native has a way of rising to the prime-time spotlight
most recently last summer’s hometown Michigan Central spectacular and February’s “Saturday Night Live” 50th anniversary concert
The reemergence of Meg White for the first White Stripes performance in 16 years would certainly make for a gripping
But given the duo’s convictions when it comes to history
it wouldn’t be shocking if they opted to leave the purity of their legacy as it is
This year’s Rock & Roll of Fame induction was a second shot for the White Stripes: The band was originally nominated in 2023 during their first year of eligibility
which kicks in 25 years after an artist’s first commercial release
that was the 1998 single “Let’s Shake Hands”)
And this might not be Jack White’s only opportunity for RRHOF glory: Along with his various other band projects
he will eventually will become eligible for induction as a solo artist

This house on Rogue Way was part of the 2025 White Rock Home Tour
The 17th annual White Rock Home Tour took place this weekend
“These funds will make a significant impact
benefiting the Hexter Elementary PTA and supporting our mission to enhance educational opportunities for our children,” White Rock Home Tour 2025 Chair Chanda Rousseau said in the press release
“This success would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors
the warm hospitality of our homeowners who graciously opened their doors
and the tireless efforts of our volunteers
Your collective commitment and enthusiasm have not only propelled this event to new heights but also continue to foster a vibrant community spirit
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your invaluable contributions
Your support is the cornerstone of our ongoing efforts to create enriching educational experiences for the students at Hexter Elementary.”
The tour included six homes in close proximity to White Rock Lake
When Ava Meyers stepped out of fourth grade language arts teacher Miriam Osborne’s classroom for an early end to the semester
she was understandably sad that she wouldn’t get to see her friends at White Rock Elementary for a while
She was leaving a few days and a few periods early to spend two weeks in London for a family wedding over the holidays
A classroom-wide sendoff was organized to soften the blow
“The whole class filed into the hallway,” Osborne says
and we were hugging her and telling her goodbye
Osborne is a diehard fan of the new wave U.K
Dolls of each member arranged in a pyramid by personal preference — Andy Taylor
hidden by a desk organizer — and their second studio album
features prominently in the class record collection
There’s even a disconnected landline specially designed to receive “calls” from Simon Le Bon
For a stint during the Meyers’ stay in England
the family stayed in an Airbnb in the Putney neighborhood of Central London
Buckingham Palace and theatrical performances
searched for new activities to fill the time
“I would just research what’s around this neighborhood,” Zahra says
and I was just Googling things to do in Putney
and the first thing that popped up was Simon Le Bon lives in Putney from Duran Duran.”
the idea of meeting Le Bon was far-fetched
So Zahra’s aunt sent out a few texts and zeroed in on an address
The original plan was just to walk by his house for the sake of simply viewing it in person on Christmas Day
That probably would have been enough for her Duranie teacher
She and an 83-year-old relative named Nick
Zahra was initially hesitant but assumed Le Bon would be away on vacation
his wife came to the door next and following a few moments getting pitched the idea by Nick
agreed to get her husband “because it was Christmas.”
66-year-old rock star was notedly kind and friendly
and the 10-year-old was left with a lifetime memory
“I didn’t think I was actually gonna meet them
The entire experience was sparked by Osborne’s love for the band
When the teacher got a text of a photo featuring her student with Le Bon
she “just couldn’t believe it” and sent the photo to all of her Duranie friends
Ava gave what she recalls as an “hour long” recounting of the story to her classmates when classes resumed in January
Osborne’s connection to the band goes back to her childhood in El Paso in the ’80s
she says she had trouble fitting in and finding an identity
she and her brothers would travel across town to get records from a British record store
Simon Le Bon and Ava Meyers on the doorstep of Le Bon’s home in England
“I tagged along and I bought my first Duran Duran record
And I think part of it was because it gave me an identity for sure
Aside from just loving the music and all of that
And so what I’ve since learned in my lifetime is there is no better bass player than John Taylor
Duran Duran is a really strong percussion band.”
Osborne has carried her passion for the band into her RISD classroom
“It’s just been a fiber through my whole life story
and I think it’s a fiber that’s kind of woven into how I teach and why I teach,” she says
“And I just think we all have a connection
The first day of class is always accompanied by a lengthy
in-depth backstory on Osborne’s Duran Duran passion
which stems from a time when music streaming was unheard of and favorite bands were hobbies
She plays a different record each week for the class on her turntable
Duran Duran have played as students work on journaling
Osborne says that listening to albums helps her illustrate the world of storytelling to her ELA classes
Ava is now taking guitar lessons at Dallas Piano Academy
which are going “pretty well.” She and her mom give a good amount of the credit to Mrs
and it connected me to a world that I didn’t always fit in as a child,” Osborne says
“It helped me find people who I still love to this day
and it’s a big part of this classroom with me and the students I teach
and there’s something really incredible about hearing something and it taking you to a happy moment.”
that she hears one of their songs one day and just smiles.”
Noticed a man in White Rock Valley showing off an antique sword in his Union Blues recently
Williams recently set up a stand outside his White Rock Valley home complete with links to historical records
a musket and an authentic Civil War-era sword used during the Siege of Mobile
which is permanently housed at Williams’ cousin’s home in Kansas City
“It’s just absolutely thrilling,” Williams said
they kind of make fun of me because I’m so into it
we don’t have many stories that talk about how there were allies for this problem of slavery in our nation
And it’s just thrilling to me that not only was he a Civil War veteran and I have his sword
but he was a veteran leading Black troops.”
Kinney led his troops with the sword at the Battle of Fort Blakely in 1865
It recently made a return when Williams and his cousin returned for an annual reenactment
“They would use shark skin as opposed to leather
but I think it had to do with the fact that shark skin is used to being wet
His goal in showing off the sword is to educate neighbors and provide a space for reflection on the nation’s “original sin”. He says that he would especially like to bring the sword to Lake Highlands High School for a presentation during lunchtime
“I’m grateful to all the historians in my life that took the time to look me in the eye and say
People kind of mind their own business these days
They don’t want to put themselves out there
But through my dad and others I guess I’m a frustrated historian myself.”
An open letter to White Rock mayor and city council:
The news that mayor and council had voted 4-3 to build new premises on Johnson Street for a new city hall and library was to say the least
annex and daycare properties will then be sold to developers for the construction of two or more six-storey condos along Fir Street and Buena Vista Avenue
as well as parts of Pacific Avenue and Centre Street
is a great disappointment for the current condo dwellers in this area
especially for some of us who paid prime for a small view of the water!
Where is common-sense urban development to have so many highrise buildings plonked all over the city amongst two- or three-storey buildings
The current library is an attractive building
and why not renovate and add a storey or two to the current city hall and annex
European countries would lose their charm if the their lovely houses and buildings were destroyed.

Conservative incumbent Kerry-Lynne Findlay has gone down to defeat at the hands of Liberal challenger Ernie Klassen
Klassen had 31,106 votes to Findlay's 28,602

addressing the claim her campaign manager had made earlier in the night
"My heart is absolutely here with South Surrey-White Rock
I’m so honoured to have represented this riding for the last six years."
She went on to thank her volunteers and said there was nothing else any of them could have done to change the result
and the NDP candidate here was only named in the last day and she had no literature
so no doubt that a lot of those votes went over to the Liberal side."

As Smash Theatre School's founder and leader
there's something inspiring about seeing young people take on the challenge of tackling professional-level theatre
Beyond any applause they receive for their efforts they are building qualities that will last them a lifetime – self-confidence
These qualities – and a generous helping of precocious talent – will be showcased this month as the South Surrey-based Smash Theatre Company takes on Newsies – one of the most celebrated musicals in the Disney canon
Based on the real-life strike by impoverished and homeless newsboys (newspaper sellers) in New York City in 1899
the show will be presented at Delta's Genesis Theatre (5005 45 Ave.) from May 10 to May 18
The show (with music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and book by Harvey Fierstein) demands bold choreography and powerhouse vocals to deliver its inspiring messages of courage and unity in the face of violence
intimidation and corruption – but the current production's two full casts of eager students are measuring up to the challenge
Established 11 years ago by Reader-Romo (a recipient of the White Rock/South Surrey Chamber of Commerce's Business of the Year Supporter of the Arts Award) and run by her and her daughter, Smash offers musical theatre and dance classes for children ages six and up
The program is nothing if not ambitious
according to a media release – this year alone
the company has already taken on The Lion King (Kids); while productions of High School Musical
Reader-Romo described the program as a “launchpad for confidence
“Some of these kids train over 20 hours a week — dancing
singing — and the personal growth I get to witness is truly incredible,” she said
“None of it would be possible without our incredible parent volunteers and the support of this community
Students travel from as far as afield as Abbotsford to be part of the program
and many alumni return to teach or volunteer
“I am absolutely blown away by what these kids are able to put on," said parent Natasha Young
"Watching them shine on stage is an unforgettable experience,” she added
"The dedication is amazing – and it means everything to them to have the support of the community."
May 16 there will be one performance at 7 p.m.
Tickets for Newsies ($30.74 to $34.94) are available at smashtheatreschool.ca

The proposed master plan is meant to be a conceptual framework to guide improvements to the lake
The city has heard feedback on White Rock Lake from residents since 2023
Common feedback themes were maintenance and lake edge control
Among the major concern for residents is the erosion along the trail where the lake meets Garland Road
White Rock Lake was built in 1911 as a water source for the city of Dallas. Today it still supplies a small part of the city's municipal water needs, according to the Texas Water Development Board
but it also serves as a recreational area for residents and it's home to a variety of wildlife
One of the earliest master plans for the park was in 1936 by the National Park Service
The latest plans were a lighting and design plan in 2009 and a maintenance plan in 2022
said the 2024 proposed master plan is the latest attempt to evaluate studies performed over the years and make recommendations to find what's still relevant for the community today
Here are some concepts the proposed master plan could include

Pam Karlos served on the White Rock YMCA board for over 40 years before retiring at the end of 2024
But her time at the Y started long before she served on the board
and her story in our neighborhood is not over yet
We sat down with her to learn more about her YMCA journey
What was your first interaction at YMCA
I spent many summer days riding my bike from Lemmon and Inwood to the Y on Preston Road — long before it was the Park Cities Y or Moody Y
our family got involved with the East Dallas Y
It was a classic old beautiful home with good bones but small facilities
Our son and other kids took swimming lessons in pools volunteered by neighbors
my husband and I did some amateur coaching in soccer
How did you watch the White Rock YMCA transform into what it is today
We had outgrown the house Y during my term
and we worked hard to raise funds and find a new location
We settled on the ‘Warehouse Y,’ as I called it
the property houses Ale House and Ace Hardware
we took the large empty space and developed an exercise space
a wheelchair basketball league and Bishop Lynch held their wrestling practices there
Richard Vitale — board president at the time — recruited East Dallas lawyers
We built a pool and got the City to build a bridge connection to White Rock Lake
Lincoln Property decided to sell the property and literally moved us across Gaston to the upper-level shopping center
but there was an energetic workout area and a couple of classrooms
we were able to buy the vacating Lutheran Church
None of this would have happened if this community had not opened their hearts and pocketbooks
What kept you serving the YMCA for all those years
It should be obvious why I stayed 40 years. I take with me great memories. A huge thank you to the Y staff — which I’ve seen turn over many times over the years. Always, I saw bright energetic people moving on to further their careers, taking with them the qualities of the Y to share with others
The Y can still count on me for some volunteering and support
We’ve put five children through Woodrow Wilson High School
Part of my job is taking teachers’ wish lists and figuring out what needs we can meet for them in a scholarship form

Water Production crews from the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) placed barriers around the location
which is about 0.25 miles from the traffic light at Rover Boulevard on the south side of the road heading away from White Rock
The line has broken in the same location numerous times in the past
A new water transmission line installation project is already scheduled to begin in February
DPU water operators are isolating that section of line and will cease using it until the new line is installed

A new historical marker at the White Rock Cemetery Garden of Memories honors a vital piece of Dallas’s Black history
dates back to the Reconstruction era and serves as the final resting ground for formerly enslaved pioneers
farmers and prominent Black landowners who shaped the area
Although it is one of Dallas’ oldest cemetery sites
its location behind apartment complexes has left it overlooked
“It puts a face of inclusion in Dallas that the founders of Dallas were not all white male patriarchs,” said Remembering Black Dallas member Edward Gray
The organization and the White Rock Cemetery Garden of Memories
are scheduled to hold a dedication ceremony Saturday to keep Dallas residents aware of the Black history North Dallas carries
RBD works to educate the public through tours highlighting freedman towns and notable people like Anderson Bonner
prominent Black landowners buried in the cemetery
Glenn Bonner is White Rock Cemetery’s caretaker and a direct descendant of Anderson Bonner
the marker is an opportunity to honor and preserve his family legacy while ensuring the cemetery’s historical value is no longer hidden
“The spirit and the souls that exist within the confines of this property
they run deep within us and all of our family members,” Bonner said
Remembering Black Dallas has put up several markers around the city this past year
but Gray said this one is particularly meaningful
The organization wanted to make sure the families are represented respectfully as they reclaim overlooked heritage
“This is not just a situation where we put together a marker and place it,” said Gray
“We also put a marker together and we're placing it on holy ground.”
He said RBD intends to continue planning for more markers around the city
George Keaton said that there is no such thing as Black history

It’s the venue that remains constant even as the people within change and grow older
engagement parties and retirement celebrations are all made in a family home and remain even after the house is sold
That’s probably what made it so special when Christie Lipschitz connected with the previous owners of her White Rock Valley mid-century modern home
Johnny and Joanie Williams lived in the house for over 50 years and raised their children there
Lipschitz bought the home from the Williams children after Johnny and Joanie’s passing
and when her real estate agent told her the family would like to meet her and her husband
You just tell right away that they were very warm
“And they told us how much this home had meant to them
because John and Joanie lived here for 50 years
and so they told us a little bit about them
we’ve heard so many stories about John and Joanie.”
Williams were apparently the heartbeat of the street
putting out reindeer food come Christmastime and taking younger families under their wing as they aged
But Lipschitz didn’t just hear stories about their predecessors
A box of home movies had been left in the home’s basement when the Williamses moved out
Lipschitz called the family to hand over the footage
Having heard all the stories about Johnny and Joanie made her next meeting with the Williams family all the more special
“We started to learn that it was just a very special
And so the next time that the Williamses came over so we could give them the film
“We were able to say just how many stories we’d heard about their mom and their dad
and that we just think that the love in the house is something that doesn’t go away
And I think it was very special to them too
Lipschitz and her husband gradually transformed the home with a series of renovations to its exterior and interior
carpets ripped up and even a pickleball court was added to the home’s expansive backyard
“I’m glad that we didn’t jump as soon as we moved in to make all of the changes
because we didn’t really know what we wanted or needed yet,” she says
but we’re able to kind of grow with the house.”
One of the biggest changes was opening up the home’s living area
A small sunroom had previously separated it from the back patio before it was opened up to expand the living room
with a small basement used as a media room
dining room and a loft all stacked together
has decorated the home to match its mid-century look
Alongside some modern and reproduction items
she’s also brought in vintage pieces to brighten the space
A number of antique rugs and runners line most floors
“I think this is true even especially in a new home
it just helps kind of lend this sense of authenticity to it.”
Lipschitz has updated lighting fixtures in the kitchen and hallways to include hanging lights to replace recessed lighting
The home also came with built-in wall lights
which she has restored and added mirrored copper glass to
The living room features preexisting wooden cabinets
shelves and even a bookcase that serves as a media console
Its terrazzo floors were one of the main draws
we have a vision for it.’ But they’re so fun
Lipschitz replaced the patio’s stucco floor with saltillo tile
Most of the left side of the home’s backyard was originally occupied by a large storage shed
expanded the existing slab and added a net and playing surface to create a backyard pickleball court
“Whenever there’s nice weather and we’re not working
let’s go play pickleball,’ and we can go play for 15 minutes
And we never would have had that experience if we kept the shed up
Lipschitz says she and her husband plan on staying in the home for the long haul
It will become her family home just as it was for the Williamses
her encounter with whom she recalls fondly
for showing us that they appreciated the changes that we had made while still honoring the home
Even things like those geckos out there that are on the trees
Those are some things that I think Joanie just loved things like that
Kind of all these little things that were part of that family’s history and story here in this house for 50 years
it’s really neat to still see some of those things
