|gwickliffe@mlive.comWHITMORE LAKE – The climb to the top was emotional and remaining there will require the same level of passion That is where Whitmore Lake’s girls cross country team stands as it prepares to defend its Division 4 state championship from last season It took nearly 30 years for the Trojans to reach the mountain top once again and the team returns a talented group of runners that could help them repeat for the first time since the 1995-96 campaigns “We’re trending in the right direction,” said head coach Casey Livingston “We’ve got a couple of meets to see where we’re at and we’ll adjust our analytics from there and hopefully build them up and have them ready to peak right around the state meet.” ‘We all cried’: Whitmore Lake’s state title goes beyond cross country glory Last year was a magical run for the Trojans that was years in the making They finally got over the hump with the addition of freshman sensation Kaylie Livingston With Kaylie poised to compete for the individual crown alongside junior all-staters Carina Burchi and Sofia Robertson the Trojans are aiming to return to the dominance they had in the ’90s “We’ve been working hard and we’re still building,” Kaylie said “We’re just trying to compete again for the top title.” Whitmore Lake can compete for another crown this season given the team’s depth while Burchi placed sixth and Robertson took 20th Elodie Weaver finished 49th and is expected to be another key returner in addition to sophomore Abigail Watenpool A stacked roster doesn’t necessarily mean the season will be a cakewalk But the experience they possess is something they believe can be used as an advantage so we already know what it’s like,” Robertson said “It’s kind of nice to go into (the season) again already knowing what to expect We’re not going to be surprised that much.” the confidence the Trojans have in each other could be the deciding factor in their success this fall “The nerves never go away for me,” Weaver said but now that we’ve competed for the state title and had all the experience Whitmore Lake has earned the right to be excited about what’s to come given the success it accomplished last year And if the team can secure another championship it would further solidify the team’s legacy but we want to prove them right and prove we can do it again.” To prove their supporters right will take the same level of consistency that put the Trojans on the map and they’re ready to get back to work it’s just a matter of getting better and focusing on our upcoming races,” Burchi said Pressure is what motivates us to make our parents and the people around us proud.” Whitmore Lake's girls cross country team celebrates winning the Division 4 state title at the MHSAA finals on Saturday at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn (Photo provided by Shane Collins)Shane Collins .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Greg Wickliffe |gwickliffe@mlive.comWHITMORE LAKE – The emotions were the same There were still tears of joy when Whitmore Lake’s girls cross country team learned it had repeated as Division 4 state champions on Saturday the team marked the historic moment with a different kind of embrace “It was a giant group hug,” said junior Elodie Weaver of the celebration The nerves the Trojans felt to meet high expectations were present even before they reached the starting line on Saturday “The night before the race we were struggling to eat because we were so nervous,” Weaver said so it was going to be great no matter what.” It made sense the pressure Weaver and her teammates felt given the Trojans were expected to repeat with the amount of talent they returned they didn’t know they had won because they hadn’t seen their team’s name at the top of the leaderboard near the end of the race But once the final tallies came through and the Trojans realized they had earned back-to-back state titles for the first time since 1995-96 “We were all waiting for our whole team to finish at the end,” said junior Sofia Robertson 1/6Whitmore Lake girls cross country teamThe Trojans had every reason to be proud as they were the only team across all four divisions to win both the team title and the individual crown It was the perfect ending to a near perfect season that saw the Trojans establish themselves as one of the best programs in the state “It was definitely emotional winning back-to-back titles,” Livingston said Even though they made it look easy during the season it was the work the Trojans put in behind the scenes that set the stage for their victories Head coach Casey Livingston upped the team’s mileage over the summer and trained them harder to get them ready for their title defense It not only paid off when it mattered most at the state finals but it helped the Trojans win six of their last seven races including conference and regional titles Whitmore Lake also challenged itself by racing against the best teams in the state including D1 and D2 champions Romeo and Goodrich and other top programs like Ann Arbor Pioneer “We raced up quite often and challenged them,” Casey said The level of competition not only challenged the Trojans but it raised the bar for the team on the way to the memorable moment “It was a moment of relief,” said junior Carina Burchi of the team’s win Kaylie also became the program’s first individual champion since Betsy Speer in 1995 The sophomore star was just as dominant as her team as she won 12 of the 14 races she competed in and improved on a state runner-up finish as a freshman team success is what she will cherish the most “That was super exciting,” Kaylie said of winning the individual crown so I was happy that I got to accomplish that but definitely the team championship means more.” Though the Trojans will lose senior Isabella Nelson-Daniels making the expectations of a 3-peat even higher “It’s a weird feeling knowing that no one else has done this for 30 years,” Burchi said “We’re hoping next year we can do a 3-peat and be the first ever to go back-to-back-to-back in Whitmore Lake history.” The pressure they’ll feel during another title push isn’t lost on them either “It is a little scary knowing that the target is on our back but it’s even more motivation to work hard and want it,” Robertson said “Working and training is the only thing you can do,” Burchi said .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Jordyn Pair | jpair@mlive.comWASHTENAW COUNTY MI -- No students were injured in a bus crash near Whitmore Lake on Thursday morning touchdowns during the regular season than anyone in the Ann Arbor area last year What should scare opposing defenses preparing to face Fox in 2024 is that Whitmore Lake head coach Brian Boron believes Fox will be running behind the best offensive line the program has had in quite a while if not ever during Boron’s near-decade tenure There is more than one reason for Boron to be excited about what could be possible this season Fox rushed for 1,301 yards and 21 touchdowns last year on his way to earning all-conference and Ann Arbor Dream Team honors the Trojans will not only have the experience up front to open lanes for Fox and others but they will also have the size with several linemen near or above 300 pounds It could be a record-setting season for Fox behind this offensive line and Boron knows it “With the transfer of Anthony Schwerin (from Walled Lake Western) and some of the maturity of the young kids we probably have our best line that we’ve had but definitely since the 2019 team,” Boron said The Whitmore Lake football team poses for a portrait during MLive high school football media day at Concordia University in Ann Arbor on Tuesday July 23 2024.Jackson Ranger | For MLive.com The Trojans have always been a run-first offense but haven’t matched the success up front the team enjoyed in 2019 when it saw runners Logan Kurth and Evan Romeo combine for nearly 2,900 yards on the ground all-conference returner Teddy Gottbreht and juniors Gavin Yax and Sawyer Towns has Fox eager to see what’s on the horizon and I really want to win and that’s really all I care about.” It’s also not lost on Yax on what the Trojans could do offensively this year “I know a lot of our team has put in a lot of work in the offseason,” Yax said “Everyone has been putting in a lot of effort and I believe this year is going to go a lot better than last year.” Not every small school like Whitmore Lake can say it will have the type of experience and talent up front something that doesn’t go unnoticed by Boron “For a Division 8 school that’s playing Division 5 it’s pretty rare you get a group like that together,” Boron said “And couple the fact that we’ve got an all-region running back (Fox) and then Cayden Bradburn also coming back it just gives us a lot more moving pieces.” The Trojans will of course have to prove it on the field given they finished last year at 2-7 Fox believes this could be a special season for the team “They should expect some wins,” Fox said of what fans should look for this season After voters shot down a bond issue in August the Whitmore Lake School District is taking another shot at raising funds for needed improvements The district has placed a sinking fund millage proposal on the November ballot with hopes a lower price tag and better communication will get residents on board Superintendent Tom DeKeyser says the need for construction and repairs hasn’t changed A sinking fund millage can be used to pay off repair needs with cash to avoid interest and legal fees like with a bond with a total raised of about $10 million over ten years DeKeyser has scheduled a series of Zoom meetings to answer residents’ questions
