AZ (AZFamily) — A crash detection system on a cellphone helped notify authorities of a crash on a Wickenburg highway
and police say several factors likely led to the deadly collision
The single-vehicle crash happened on U.S. 93 near Wickenburg Ranch early Monday morning
The Wickenburg Police Department says they were notified of the wreck through Apple’s crash detection feature on iPhone
First responders arrived and performed life-saving measures to help the 18-year-old driver
Police say the man was driving from Nevada to the Phoenix area and suspect that speed
alcohol and a tinted windshield were factors in the crash
The crash detection feature on an iPhone or Apple Watch can detect if the user has been involved in a severe car crash
The device then sends an alert by displaying an “emergency call slider” on the screen
the iPhone or Apple Watch will automatically call emergency services
It can also send your emergency contacts a message with your location and display any medical info on the screen for the first responders

PHOENIX — A section of a road project widening 5 miles of US 93 from two to four lanes in Wickenburg has been completed
the Arizona Department of Transportation announced Thursday
The project cost $55 million and added the extra lanes between Tegner Street and Wickenburg Ranch Way, according to ADOT
Additional improvements made include roundabouts
The larger plan is to completely widen and reconstruct the entire 200-mile section of US 93 from Wickenburg to the Hoover Dam into a four-lane divided highway
A $26 million federal grant will extend the length of another section of the US 93 highway by 1.27 miles between Wickenburg Ranch Way and just northwest of State Route 89
There also is a $106 million project underway to connect US 93 highway and Interstate 40 in Kingman
This will help prevent traffic delays for travelers and semi-trucks on the popular route between Arizona and Las Vegas
a $48.8 million project in the Cane Springs area between I-40 and Wikieup is set to start next year

AZ (AZFamily) — A cause has been determined of a destructive wildfire earlier this summer near Wickenburg
On Monday, Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management spokesperson Tiffany Davila said investigators found the Rose Fire was caused by railroad maintenance operations
The 166-acre wildfire burned from June 12 to 17 on the east side of U.S
60 and destroyed several structures and vehicles
Investigators found a section of cut railroad track from work along the BNSF rail line
and they determined that area was the point of origin for the fire
They said the fire moved upslope away from the tracks
Davila said investigators concluded the wildfire started from sparks caused by a welder
grinder or torch used to cut the rail line
vehicles and utility infrastructure and forced the closure of U.S
The cost of the fire is estimated at $971,000
Among the structures lost in the fire was the childhood home of Kara Engemann-Tracy. Her family’s property included three homes and a mechanic shop, but the Rose Fire destroyed everything and all of her dad’s belongings
BNSF sent Arizona’s Family the following statement
we assist municipalities in suppression efforts and help the communities that are affected
We appreciate the hard work and collaboration with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management on this fire
We remain committed to learning from this incident by continuing to reduce the risk of fire around our tracks and working closely with local agencies during fire season
We continue to investigate the incident and all claims related to it
