PEOPLE revealed that the Food Network stars turned their friendship into a relationship in March SEATTLE MARINERS 12:38 PM | Updated: 2:51 pm Ben Williamson has only been on the Seattle Mariners’ roster for three weeks Why ESPN’s Buster Olney believes in Edgar’s impact on M’s That’s owed to how well Williamson has done so far in at the big league level belying his full pro experience of 166 games – including in the minors – that just recently passed what covers a full MLB season The 24-year-old third baseman has fit right in with the Mariners hitting .242 with a home run and three doubles in 16 games – and that’s only after a few hitless games over the last week drove his average down from .310 through his first 11 contests Williamson is also a very capable third baseman defensively to the point that it’s not rare to read his name and the words “Gold Glove potential” next to each other Mariners rookie Ben Williamson makes jaw-dropping catch Maturity seems to an important element of Williamson’s personality and his even-keel nature was on display right from the moment that the Mariners picked him in the third round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Virginia’s College of William and Mary On an episode of The Wheelhouse podcast released on Saturday Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto detailed the humorous conversation that Mariners director of amateur scouting Scott Hunter had on a video call with Williamson to tell him he had been taken with one of the last picks on the first night of that draft Here’s a summation of how Dipoto said the conversation went with Williamson speaking in a hushed tone while sitting in the dark while the Mariners’ draft room was abuzz following three first-round picks its Scott Hunter with the Seattle Mariners • Hunter: “We just took you in the second round • Hunter: “Are you sitting in the dark?” I’m at my parents’ – they’re upstairs sleeping.” • Hunter: “You might want to go wake them up.” they’ve got work in the morning.” they do say in sports to act live you’re been there before While the Mariners were the team to take Williamson with the 57th overall pick, his status as a college senior who could be signed “under slot” – less than the assigned bonus for their slot in the draft – apparently made him a popular name around the league “We got a lot of angry texts after we popped him in the second round,” Dipoto said “because there were a number of teams that that had their sights set on him in order to do creative things in the draft … We actually had him in a pretty prominent place on our board and hopefully time tells us that we had him in the right place but we had some people in the room arguing that they thought he was a first-round talent on his own (who) just so happened to be a senior.” Dipoto pointed to a few other things that speak to why Williamson was able to hit the ground running with the Mariners after getting called up with just 14 games at Triple-A under his belt “Since the day he stepped out on a field (after signing with the Mariners)… he has been one of the most consistent people that we’ve had in our organization,” Dipoto said If he’s not out on the field or in the cages “We saw it in spring training – he had a really good spring and he just absorbed as much as he could.” What the Mariners saw from Williamson this spring included him running in a different kind of circle than most players with his level of experience tend to he was always hovering around the veteran hitters trying to pull whatever he could from them,” Dipoto continued “And more often with guys who are in their first big league camp or they’re coming in (from the minors) they’ll pool up with the other guys who are in their circumstance And Ben didn’t do that in the spring he spent a lot of time around the veteran hitters… And it gave him a level of comfort when he got his call up.” Click here for the full episode of The Wheelhouse with Jerry Dipoto. A bit of a surprise.” Those were among the first things said about Williamson’s selection on the MLB Network broadcast All of which was quite amusing to the Williamson family now watching the broadcast back in Virginia still trying to process what was happening in real time “We found that funny,” Andy Williamson said “You could tell they were scrambling to find something to say about Ben.” A late bloomer through high school and college Williamson was drafted way earlier than anyone around him expected way earlier than anyone could have reasonably expected too Kevin Seitzer isn’t scrambling to find something to say about Williamson now The Mariners’ new hitting coach is raving about the Mariners’ new third baseman and about Williamson’s mature approach at the plate in particular This goes back to the early days of spring training in February when Seitzer and Williamson were in their first camp together Seitzer was struck by Williamson’s ability to send line drive after line drive to right field in batting practice It’s that opposite-field approach that Seitzer and Edgar Martinez have messaged consistently to Mariners hitters and Williamson came into his first big-league camp seemingly doing it with ease “Just keep doing what you’re doing,” Seitzer told him has impressed teammates and coaches in his first two weeks with the Mariners filling a sizable hole at third base for an injury-riddled roster He arrived after just 150 games in the minor leagues — the fewest appearances by a Mariners position player before his big-league debut in 12 years — and he’s living up to his reputation as a defensive wizard And while there were real questions about how well his bat would play against major-league pitching He singled in his first big-league at-bat in Cincinnati on April 15 and three days later he hit his first home run (in Toronto) Through 53 plate appearances entering Friday’s series opener against the Texas Rangers Williamson was hitting .260 with a .662 OPS and a 99 OPS+ (100 is league average) Ben Williamson rips his first big league hit for the @Mariners at 105.8 mph!A moment the club's 2023 second-rounder out of @WMTribeBaseball will never forget: pic.twitter.com/dipKpEcqX7 He’s been working closely with Adam Bernero and strength coaches to find a daily routine that suits him and he’s tried to follow the lead of veteran shortstop J.P “He shows up at the field every day and does the same thing every day,” Williamson said of Crawford so why should I change what I’ve been doing my whole life?” After Williamson was promoted to the big leagues two weeks ago Hunter went back and reread the 2023 scouting reports Hunter said Williamson had a grade of at least 50 (big-league average) in every area except one Williamson drew comparisons to former Mariners third basemen David Bell and Jeff Cirillo “If he hits for a little more power than we think he can because of the defense and everything else he can do,” Hunter said “And I hate to put that kind of pressure on him but he does so many things that we want our hitters to do and then he hits a home run his first week in the big leagues So Ben is making us look really smart right now.” There are prospects the “nerds” love and there are prospects the traditional scouts love the two branches for talent evaluation in modern baseball There are the new-age analysts who spend much of their time on their laptops breaking down data points the stuff you’d find on MLB’s Baseball Savant website) And there are old-school talent evaluators who rack up frequent-flyer miles and scour the various corners of the country to scout ballplayers in person sizing up a prospect’s physical makeup and future potential as a pro (basically Good organizations should value opinions from both departments another prospect in the 2023 draft that divided the Mariners brass during the pre-draft process The scouts who evaluated University of Pittsburgh pitcher Logan Evans offered a firm “no/do not draft” in their reports The analysts who dug into the data were intrigued by the pitch shapes in Evans’ deep repertoire The Mariners ended up drafting Evans in the 12th round a low-risk flyer on a pitcher who had a 5.88 ERA in his final college season Evans had blossomed into a Top 100 prospect in the sport and last Sunday he won his major-league debut in Seattle becoming the second player from the Mariners’ 2023 draft to reach the big leagues and he serves as an example of a prospect who had gained overwhelming consensus among scouts and analysts “It usually doesn’t happen like that,” Dave Cameron the Mariners’ senior director of player procurement It’s not often you have everyone agreeing like we did with Ben.” College seniors are generally overlooked and undervalued and that’s probably truer for prospects at mid-major schools if they were good enough to be real pro prospects they would have been selected when they’re initially eligible as a junior Williamson was not drafted after his junior year at William & Mary That motivated him to make some changes that offseason — he added about 10-15 pounds “living in the weight room,” his father said — and he was named the conference player of the year after hitting .390 with 12 homers who had evaluated Williamson in games were bullish on his makeup and athleticism Holub reported Williamson was the best defensive third baseman he’d ever scouted in college Cameron and lead analyst Spencer Weisberg were confident Williamson’s hitting metrics — his swing decisions and his 87% contact rate in particular — supported the strength of his senior-year breakthrough at William & Mary when everyone is looking for power and velocity And where Evans serves as the latest in a long line of pitching prospects the Mariners have drafted and developed into big-leaguers — following Logan Gilbert among others — Williamson represents the first hitter from a swelling wave of young sluggers on track to arrive in Seattle over the next couple years the Mariners took three big swings with their first picks — taking all high-school position players (Colt Emerson With the structure of the MLB draft system each pick selection has an assigned signing bonus value MLB draft picks can negotiate for larger bonuses and high-school prospects have leverage to do so because they can go to college if they don’t get the bonus they want from an MLB team That was the case with the Mariners’ three high-school picks all of whom signed for well over slot value up from the pick value of just under $3.5 million.) With a set amount to spend — assigned by the MLB for each team before the draft calculated by draft position — the Mariners knew they had to “save” bonus money elsewhere in the draft Which is part of the reason they took Williamson with their final pick on Day 1 of the draft The Mariners had projected Williamson in the Round 3-5 range but they were able to sign him for $600,000 the Mariners got a prospect virtually everyone in their draft room agreed was undervalued in the industry and Williamson has quickly proven he was worth it After growing up in the classroom with his music teacher father it was Buffalo State’s creative studies program that helped him merge his love for creativity with his passion for educating Williamson fuses creativity into his roles as assistant principal at Elmwood Village Charter School and a creativity consultant for various educational organizations He was recently recognized on Buffalo Business First’s 40 Under 40 List a distinction that honors those who have distinguished themselves in their companies their communities and their industries before their fortieth birthdays Williamson graciously gave a few moments of his time to reflect on his Buffalo State journey When and how did you know that education was the right fit for you?I've always been in education so I grew up with him being in my elementary school—you spend a lot of time with teachers when you're waiting for them to finish up their day and things like that How and why did you choose to come to Buffalo State?I've always had a passion for giving back to the community that gave to me I started teaching theater with little kids then moved to higher education at Fredonia “How can I apply this back on the home level?” I wanted to figure out how I could bring creativity into education and Buffalo State’s creative studies program piqued my interest.I took the first class “How are you going to apply this to your life?” I started thinking about creativity fit into education and what I was already doing a poet—my world has always been surrounded in creativity—but to be able to put a name to it How did Buffalo State support you on your path to becoming a teacher?I went to my professors and I told them I wanted to focus on and figure out how creativity fits not just in the classroom which is what I'm more about now as an assistant principal I've found that teachers don’t often think about creative solutions but if you have someone who's there to primarily focus on that They were impressed with the idea and some of them were already doing research in it so we were able to work together to kind of build what that can look like What lesson from Buffalo State has stayed with you?Sometimes things don't go the exactly the way you expect them to It’s about understanding what's happening around you and then knowing that things aren't always going to go exactly how you plan them to but you still have the opportunity to make the most of it My professors would explain how they were able to make differences in bigger organizations than I’d ever worked with What advice do you have for new teachers?Find an outlet outside of school You need something that is going to help you recharge It’s an exhausting job; it takes a lot out of you Remember you're doing it for the kids,” and that’s a given but remember that you can't pour from an empty cup Find that outlet and don't give it up for anything Photo by Jesse Steffan-Colucci, Buffalo State photographer Rabbit found impaled on the Williamson Herald owners' front lawn Incident raises questions amid contentious Brentwood election cycle A dead rabbit was impaled and left in the front yard of Brentwood residents Derby and Cassie Jones who also own and publish the Williamson Herald and Southern Exposure Magazine in what they believe is an act of attempted intimidation during a heated election season The Joneses found the rabbit which had been impaled with the stake of a garden banner in their front yard while on a morning walk on Thursday They filed a report with the Brentwood Police Department but police have not yet confirmed that they are investigating the incident as a crime In part because it’s unclear if someone killed the rabbit as part of the act and because there is no clear motive or suspect at this time the Joneses believe this was more than a prank with Derby Jones telling the Williamson Scene that the rabbit showed no other obvious signs of physical wounds "The publishers of the Williamson Herald will not be intimidated by acts of violence truthful and newsworthy stories about our community,” Derby Jones said in a statement to the Williamson Scene we are deeply saddened [that] someone would commit an act of animal cruelty as a way to silence and this season was Cade Cunningham cementing himself as a star-level talent in the NBA 1 pick shined all year and put together an impressive postseason debut While he's proven capable of being the primary pillar for the franchise it remains unclear if the roster has a talent capable of being his running mate Jaden Ivey showed a lot of promise this season but suffered what became a season-ending injury in January When it comes to possible co-stars for Cunningham, Zion Williamson is a name that has been tossed around at times. Over the weekend, a possible trade framework for the New Orleans Pelicans star began making the rounds on social media Ron Holland and a pair of first-round picks for the All-Star forward Imagine Cade x ZION 🤯Should the Pistons & Pelicans make this trade to unite the former No.1 overall picks in Detroit? 🤔#DetroitBasketball | #Pelicans pic.twitter.com/obah5VRzyu Williamson would be an exciting star to pair with Cunningham The two impact the game in a variety of ways and could create one of the league's deadliest pick-and-roll combinations the thought of Williamson has been far better than the reality in recent years Williamson is fresh off playing in 30 or fewer games for the fourth time since being drafted No this is a bit of a risky move for the Pistons While they aren't paying a steep price they're still rolling the dice on a star who hasn't proven he can consistently be available Trajan Langdon would be far better off pursuing other avenues to improve the roster around Cunningham KEVIN MCCORMICK These are the tattoo studio health scores in Williamson County, Tennessee with their most recent inspection score for April 2025. After trading for Kelly Olynyk, it became abundantly clear how effective Zion can be when surrounded by shooters freed from the shackles of having to play alongside another plodding big man who could only play inside the paint but those couple of months with Olynyk confirmed it that the benefits of having a floor-spacing big on the court are completely negated if neither of the big men is a rim protector New Orleans often bled more points than they poured in with Z and Kelly in the same lineup or Head Coach Willie Green was forced to play both of them alongside another center like Yves Missi That's why the Pelicans need to continue their search for a true stretch five one that can aptly threaten opposing defenses from deep and protect New Orleans's paint at the same time there's a perfect option hitting the open market this summer The Milwaukee Bucks are on the verge of a franchise teardown With Damian Lillard tearing his Achilles this late in the year he'll likely miss the entirety of next season especially considering his advanced age for a small guard in the NBA With virtually zero chance for them to contend for a title next year there's almost no reason why the Bucks would re-sign Brook Lopez this summer who's set to enter unrestricted free agency a rookie center who just came off a freshman season He might not be ready to anchor a playoff-caliber defense full-time but he's certainly ready to handle heavy minutes That makes Brook Lopez the perfect target for New Orleans The former champion will turn 38 years old next April He's still playing drop defense at an elite level while knocking down triples consistently but he's only good for around 18-25 minutes a night now He would be the perfect bridge to allow Missi to grow into his adult body while providing Zion Williamson with the stretch five he's always needed © 2025 Minute Media - All Rights Reserved Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Minute Media or its affiliates and related brands ","https://fansided.com/",{"alt":"61","src":"62","url":"63"},{"type":"60","value":"64"},"link","Minute Media","https://www.minutemedia.com/",{"text":"67","url":"68"},{"type":"66","value":"69"},"All Rights Reserved Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Minute Media or its affiliates and related brands leading FanSided’s coverage on all things New Orleans Pelicans.\n\nHe’s a Journalism graduate from Florida Gulf Coast University with extensive coverage in multimedia journalism and sports content creation He’s a credentialed NBA journalist who has written for several FanSided publications among other sites.\n\nIn addition to his NBA coverage This past season, we learned a few things.
