the renovation of the Willows Courthouse in Glenn County achieved upgrades to the building without compromising the facility’s historic integrity
Recognizing this achievement, the California Preservation Foundation recently awarded the renovation project with its Preservation Design Award for Rehabilitation, which honors the best historic preservation projects in California. The foundation will honor this year’s recipients at an award ceremony on May 9 at the California Museum in Downtown Sacramento
The renovation project not only increased operational efficiency for the court
but also improved security and seismic strength
The building’s improved security features include entrance screening of all court users
The courthouse’s sustainability features include energy-efficient lighting
and water-efficient irrigation and plumbing systems
The courthouse also has a self-help center
and holding facilities for in-custody defendants
and the construction vendors worked together to add a two-courtroom annex that would complement the original historic structure
the new two-story addition is compatible with the historic building’s size
and architectural features but different enough to preserve the original building’s character
“The court is very pleased that the California Preservation Foundation has chosen to recognize and honor this unique historic courthouse renovation project that preserves the courthouse’s identity and its place as a central and iconic fixture of the City of Willows and the Glenn County community,” stated Presiding Judge Donald Cole Byrd
These include new court facilities in both large and small counties
as well as urban and rural areas across the state

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — After three years of growing in an on-campus nursery, the fourth generation Old Willow
one of Penn State’s most historically significant trees
is scheduled to be planted on the Old Main lawn at 4 p.m
the public is invited to attend the planting ceremony
The third generation of Old Willow fell in a March 2021 windstorm
at which time horticulture technicians in the Office of Physical Plant carefully took cuttings and replanted them at an on-campus nursery in order to successfully grow an ‘offspring’ of Old Willow
when the original Old Willow was planted on campus by William G
The origins of that original willow tree (Salix babylonica ‘Pendula’) aren’t clear
but it is believed to come from a cutting taken by Penn State’s founding President Evan Pugh while traveling in Europe
A cutting of the tree had already been planted nearby in 1914 to ensure its continued legacy
The second-generation Old Willow shaded the Old Main lawn until the late 1970s
when it perished and was replaced by the third-generation tree
Old Willow is one of Penn State’s Heritage Trees
culturally and ecologically significant trees on campus
“The history of Old Willow is inextricable to the history of Penn State,” said Bill Sitzabee
Penn State’s vice president of facilities management and planning and chief facilities officer
“Our Grounds Services team has been instrumental in continuing this 165-year tradition and we look forward to seeing the fourth generation of Old Willow grow into a mature tree in the many decades to come.”
OPP has grown 30 to 40 viable Old Willow descendants in its nursery
and in addition to the one being planted on the Old Main lawn
others were made available for planting at Penn State Commonwealth Campuses and other University locations
The public ceremony to plant the fourth generation Old Willow is co-sponsored by OPP and the EcoAction student group
The ceremony will be held on the Old Main lawn
The former Willows Inn property, owned by Lighthouse Missions Ministries, is on the market again
After a long period of pending feasibility
the Mission and potential buyers did not move forward with a sale of the property on Lummi Island
It was due to a new septic system the Mission had to install
which cost $250,000 and added value to the property
“When it came time to renegotiate the deal
what they renegotiated wasn’t what we wanted,” Erchinger-Davis said.
Now listed as one property through the Muljat Group
the Mission is asking for $2.29 million for the property
known for its desirable location and serene setting
is being enhanced to ensure long-term reliability and value,” a news release from the Muljat Group reads
The Willows is ready for its next owner to seize the opportunity.
The property was donated to the Mission in November 2022, after a string of scandals plagued the once-famous Willows Inn restaurant. In April 2023
the property went on the market as two parcels valued at a total of $2.04 million
That deal fell through, and at the end of March 2024
the property was re-listed by the Mission as two parcels for a total of $2,290,000
Erchinger-Davis said the proceeds of the sale will go to paying back a construction loan the Mission took out to construct its new building in Old Town. The $29 million project now houses the Mission’s homeless shelter
Erchinger-Davis said depending on how much the property goes for
the Mission will still have about $1.8 million to $1.9 million to pay off before it is debt-free
He said they continue to reach out to supporters for donations
but that debt will likely slow the opening of the Mission’s behavioral health dorms in the new building.
“It’s a cool property,” Erchinger-Davis said
“ … I know that the islanders are often very interested in what becomes of it … We’d love to see something that is also accessible to the islanders
not just the wealthy folks flying in to eat there.”
Erchinger-Davis said the Mission is hoping it sells fast.
the Mission needs that money to fulfill its mission of healing homelessness with Christ and the power of love,” he said
Interested buyers can contact Kena Greer Brashear at the Muljat Group to schedule a showing.

BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The former Willows Inn property is back on the market.adButlerLazyLoad("1392216509456529768",100,["662102","662102","662102"],"177027");
Lighthouse Mission President and CEO Hans Erchinger-Davis told My Bellingham Now that several factors led to the expiration of their original deal
we need to actually replace the septic system.’ and by that time
the existing agreement had pretty well expired
but what the buyers wanted to do was pretty complex and just outside of what we wanted
the deal fell flat,” Erchinger-Davis said
The new septic system cost $250,000 to install
bringing the asking value up to just under $2.3 million
Erchinger-Davis emphasized that the property’s sale will directly help them pay the remainder of the costs associated with their new facility on F Street
“We’re trying to sell this fast
We really don’t want to be carrying the construction loan debt on our new facility
and we just want to get it paid off,” Erchinger-Davis said.adButlerLazyLoad("1732681673947323152",100,["662102","662102","662102"],"177027");
The Mission Building has about $1.8 million in construction costs left to cover
which will include expanded services in the future
“There’s one part of our program in the new facility that hasn’t been opened yet so that we can have even more capacity
and that’s for our behavioral health shelters in the facility
and we can’t open those until we know that the debt has been paid off.”
This marks the third time the former Willows property has been placed on the market since it was donated to the Lighthouse Mission in 2022

Willow is a quantum computing chip developed by Google that was unveiled at the end of 2024
It can execute complex computations in minutes
whereas classical supercomputers would take 10 septillion years
Google's Willow marked a milestone in the quantum computing field regarding speed and how it performs error correction techniques. It also proved that the error rates of a quantum computer can be reduced as more quantum bits, or qubits
hinting that it might be possible to create larger quantum systems in the future that will perform more reliable computations
Willow can perform quantum computations with significant improvements in error correction and stability using 105 qubits -- doubling its predecessor
This means that all the fields currently using quantum computing in limited areas
Willow is primarily used by Google Quantum AI for research and development purposes
In classical computing, information is conveyed physically by pulses of electrical voltage -- or light, when used in fiber-optic cables. These physical signals are represented digitally as binary bits of 1 or 0 values
Quantum computing, however, uses the nature of subatomic particles to perform calculations. Instead of using binary bits, quantum computers use qubits. These use the same 1 and 0 bits as classical computing, but add a superposition state representing 0
they are susceptible to noise -- anything that can cause an error
like environmental conditions or a wrongly applied operation -- and they can only maintain their quantum state for short periods
The Willow quantum chip attempts to address these issues
a specific type of qubit that reduces its sensitivity to noise
The logical qubits -- error-corrected qubits -- used in Willow are arranged in a seven-by-seven lattice
enabling a more scalable architecture for error correction
This lattice structure confirms that larger logical qubits can be more effective at preventing errors than smaller lattices
Willow also improves the time a qubit can maintain its quantum state from 20 microseconds to 100 microseconds
enabling a quantum computer to run more complex problems
The Willow chip is significant for its breakthrough in error correction
Today's quantum computers generally have a lot of noise that can cause errors
modern quantum computers can suffer from the following:
Quantum error correction tries to detect and fix errors as they occur
The process relies on redundancy to eliminate errors
single-qubit values are assigned to multiple qubits so that if even a few qubits encounter an error
the system should still be able to recognize and return accurate information
The issue with this process is scalability
error correction only works reliably when it operates below a specific error threshold
Willow demonstrates that increasing the size of error-corrected qubits can reduce the overall error rate
This brings the industry one step closer to creating larger
there is no timeline for the broader commercial availability of Willow
its capabilities signal an increased value for use in areas where quantum computing typically excels
Quantum computing is well suited for anything requiring advanced simulations and complex problem-solving
Due to cost and hardware limitations, it is not realistic for most organizations to own a quantum computer today. Instead, organizations can access a cloud-based service through a third party that provides quantum computing technology, called quantum as a service (QaaS)
Willow is not currently available in a QaaS package
Willow builds on Google Quantum AI's previous quantum hardware, the Sycamore processor. In 2019, Google claimed that Sycamore had reached quantum supremacy -- a point at which a quantum device can solve a problem exponentially faster than a classical processor
Sycamore took about 200 seconds to sample one instance of a quantum circuit 1 million times
which would have taken a classical supercomputer nearly 10,000 years to do
Sycamore had 53 physical qubits in comparison to Willow's 105
Google Quantum AI researchers demonstrated a logical qubit prototype
Both advancements were then applied to the creation of Willow
Google is positioning Willow as a step toward developing a useful quantum computer with practical applications. Currently, Willow is advancing Google's quantum computing roadmap
Google is not the only company advancing the field
are also developing quantum hardware that could propel the industry forward
Willow could influence future chip designs and improvements in error correction as well
Advancements in quantum computing also pose a growing threat to current encryption standards
Most modern encryption schemes rely on mathematical problems that classical computers cannot solve efficiently
but quantum computers have growing potential
Shor's algorithm, for example, is a quantum algorithm capable of factoring large integers much faster than classical computing. As the quantum field advances, organizations should be better prepared to push for the adoption of post-quantum cryptography encryption standards
The quantum computing field is making significant advancements thanks to developments like Willow. Learn more about other companies that are currently building quantum computers

A beaver was caught farting on a wildlife camera set up in a Cornwall nature reserve.
The footage, filmed within Cornwall Wildlife Trust's Helman Tor nature reserves, shows the animal breaking wind as it climbs onto a bank after emerging from water.
Experts believe that the beaver was "marking its territory."
"Beavers have, near their tail, glands that can secrete this oil called castoreum, and that actually helps them to mark their territory," beaver officer Lauren Jasper said.
Members of the public are urged not to go looking for beavers, which are nocturnal animals, so as not to disturb them.

— A family lost their home and two dogs in a house fire early Monday morning
according to the Willows Fire Department (WFD)
originating where a space heater was being used
Firefighters from the WFD responded to a reported residential structure fire at 644 N Shasta Street in Willows just before 7 a.m
They said the initial responding engine immediately requested additional resources after seeing a large
black smoke column coming from the blaze while leaving the station
The WFD said the fire engine arrived within three minutes and found a single-story home engulfed in flames
An adjacent structure was also beginning to ignite
Firefighters launched an aggressive attack
protecting the adjacent structure and containing the fire to the building of origin
Officials said that additional crews conducted a primary search of the home while simultaneously battling the flames
The WFD reported that the family was not home at the time
they confirmed two dogs perished in the fire
After the Willows and Orland fire departments investigated
officials determined that the fire was accidental

Multifaceted species appears everywhere from CT to the Arctic
UConn Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture Professor Julia Kuzovkina has researched willows for more than 20 years and is working to bring this important
species into focus due to its potential to help address many pressing ecological and sustainability challenges we face today
Kuzovkina met with UConn Today to discuss her research on this remarkable species’ many benefits
Can you talk about some of the unique and important qualities of willows
Though not too many people are familiar with willows
they are an extremely large group of plants that includes about 500 species
from Arctic zones to sub-tropical regions on all continents except Australia
The willows that most people are familiar with are weeping willows
but the range of sizes the willows is amazing
from about two inches tall for a type of willow that grows as a ground cover in Arctic zones to large trees that grow to around 60 to 70 feet tall
I study different aspects of willow taxonomy
and their various uses and I think the history of willows is amazing
Humans have a long history of using willows in different ways
Willow-produced objects like baskets have been made for many centuries but were replaced by plastic containers at the beginning of the 20th century
For centuries extracts from willow bark and leaves were used as a pain reliever until the production of synthetic aspirin
and willows were the chemical precursor for the synthetic production of aspirin
Today willows continue to play new roles with humans
and this is important in various ecological applications
We have been investigating willows for biomass
for biofuel production and phytoremediation in North America and some European countries
willows are important in the ecological recovery of disturbed regions
Willows are also important plants for pollinators
Pollinators are threatened around the world and since willows are among the earliest plants to provide flowers in spring
they are some of the earliest sources of food for pollinators
Now we are working towards selecting and trying to introduce willows to various applications
such as integrating willows into different cropping systems as part of agroforestry
incorporating them into riparian buffers along waterways
while also providing an early source of food for pollinators
like the historic storms that swept through the state on August 18th
and that emphasizes the importance of the use of willows for many applications like erosion control
which is associated with increasing amounts of stormwater
Willows and other fast-growing trees survive in devastated areas devoid of vegetation because they can tolerate poor soil conditions and start building favorable physical environments for other species
Can you talk about your research with native versus non-native willow species
we compared the values of introduced and native species
so we planted both native and introduced species at the research farm we collected pollinators during two spring seasons and compared the number of pollinators and associated species
We found no significant differences between the introduced and native willows and that was interesting and surprising
It is important to understand that willows evolved and dispersed around the world a long time ago
willows that grow in Eurasia are quite like willows growing in North America
Both groups of willows provide useful resources for pollinators
which is beneficial because if we increase plantations of introduced willows for different purposes
we know they will provide similar resources for pollinators as native willows
My current research is related to the selection of native species and introducing them commercially in New England. We call plants that originally grow in the same area ecotypes and this is the safest and the most scientifically appropriate approach
I’ve been traveling and selecting different native willows and two years ago
we started trials to see if nurseries in the region would be interested in growing these willows
and we hope that our nurseries will start growing native willow selections which we recommend
it is very critical to introduce willows for pollinators as their first source of food
Another interesting fact is that willows are one of the most difficult plants to identify
and there is so much confusion with many nurseries selling willows that they call natives but are not actually native
One of my other objectives is to help nurseries introduce these “real” native willows that we have collected in our region
nurseries are selling American pussy willow
but under this label sometimes they sell a European willow which is very different and could have invasive potential because they are spread by seeds
It also blooms two weeks later than our Native American willow
and these two weeks are a critical time for pollinators
If we intend to plant and help pollinators
we have to plant our native willow which blooms at an appropriate time when pollinators are emerging
not the introduced willow which blooms two weeks later

according to the district attorney’s office
Code enforcement discovered the infestation Wednesday (Oct
the latest in a series of challenges for tenants who say they’ve endured years of horrific living conditions
City Council President Helena Moreno said code enforcement and rodent control specialists found bats by opening a ceiling in one of the units
they believe there’s a significant infestation
The conditions were horrific,” Moreno said
owned by a religious nonprofit based in Tennessee
has a long history of neglect and code violations
FOX 8 has documented the substandard living conditions at the property for years
often accompanying code enforcement inspectors on their tours
The Willows has accumulated dozens of code violations
then-Code Enforcement Director Thomas Mulligan noted
“They do seem to be one of the entities that has been a chronic problem.”
Following extensive FOX 8 Defenders reports, the New Orleans City Council revoked the nonprofit’s tax-exempt status earlier this year
The move came after changes to the state constitution allowed the city to take action
“It still seems like problems persist,” Moreno said
Moreno reached out to District Attorney Jason Williams
“I finally reached out to the D.A.’s office and asked what we can do to potentially move forward with some criminal charges against the landlords because there are criminal blight statutes on the books in the criminal code,” Moreno said
“He is committed to working with me on the possibilities of this happening.”
Moreno says that too many Willows residents are living in deplorable conditions
and the bat infestation is just another reason the city must intervene to protect them
She says that 14 other tenants in the building may have been exposed to the bats
The health department recommends they receive rabies shots
The city has cited the property for eight violations and is expediting the case for an administrative hearing
A spokesperson for DA Williams said his office is reviewing both criminal and civil charges
calling the property’s neglect “unacceptable.”

Google has developed a new quantum chip called Willow
which significantly reduces errors as it scales up
a major breakthrough in quantum error correction
Willow also performed a computation in under five minutes that would take a supercomputer 10 septillion years
demonstrating its potential for solving complex problems beyond the reach of classical computers
This achievement marks a significant step towards building commercially relevant quantum computers that can revolutionize fields like medicine
Willow has state-of-the-art performance across a number of metrics
and Willow moves us significantly along that path towards commercially relevant applications
Errors are one of the greatest challenges in quantum computing
the units of computation in quantum computers
have a tendency to rapidly exchange information with their environment
making it difficult to protect the information needed to complete a computation
There are other scientific “firsts” involved in this result as well
it’s also one of the first compelling examples of real-time error correction on a superconducting quantum system — crucial for any useful computation
because if you can’t correct errors fast enough
they ruin your computation before it’s done
And it’s a "beyond breakeven" demonstration
where our arrays of qubits have longer lifetimes than the individual physical qubits do
an unfakable sign that error correction is improving the system overall
this is the most convincing prototype for a scalable logical qubit built to date
very large quantum computers can indeed be built
Willow brings us closer to running practical
commercially-relevant algorithms that can’t be replicated on conventional computers
Computational costs are heavily influenced by available memory
Our estimates therefore consider a range of scenarios
from an ideal situation with unlimited memory (▲) to a more practical
embarrassingly parallelizable implementation on GPUs (⬤)
we expect classical computers to keep improving on this benchmark
but the rapidly growing gap shows that quantum processors are peeling away at a double exponential rate and will continue to vastly outperform classical computers as we scale up
state-of-the-art fabrication facility in Santa Barbara — one of only a few facilities in the world built from the ground up for this purpose
System engineering is key when designing and fabricating quantum chips: All components of a chip
have to be simultaneously well engineered and integrated
If any component lags or if two components don't function well together
maximizing system performance informs all aspects of our process
from chip architecture and fabrication to gate development and calibration
The achievements we report assess quantum computing systems holistically
not just quantity — because just producing larger numbers of qubits doesn’t help if they’re not high enough quality
Willow now has best-in-class performance across the two system benchmarks discussed above: quantum error correction and random circuit sampling
Such algorithmic benchmarks are the best way to measure overall chip performance
Other more specific performance metrics are also important; for example
which measure how long qubits can retain an excitation — the key quantum computational resource — are now approaching 100 µs (microseconds)
This is an impressive ~5x improvement over our previous generation of chips
If you want to evaluate quantum hardware and compare across platforms
Willow’s performance across a number of metrics
The next challenge for the field is to demonstrate a first "useful
beyond-classical" computation on today's quantum chips that is relevant to a real-world application
We’re optimistic that the Willow generation of chips can help us achieve this goal
there have been two separate types of experiments
which measures performance against classical computers but has no known real-world applications
we’ve done scientifically interesting simulations of quantum systems
which have led to new scientific discoveries but are still within the reach of classical computers
Our goal is to do both at the same time — to step into the realm of algorithms that are beyond the reach of classical computers and that are useful for real-world
while extremely challenging for classical computers
has yet to demonstrate practical commercial applications
We invite researchers, engineers, and developers to join us on this journey by checking out our open source software and educational resources, including our new course on Coursera, where developers can learn the essentials of quantum error correction and help us create algorithms that can solve the problems of the future.
