– Letters sent to some Wilton Manors residents landed like a lead balloon
Leer en español.
Three-thousand residents got a letter from the city stating that pipes connecting older homes to the city’s main water line contained an “unidentified material” that “may possibly be lead” and cause a potential “increased risk of exposure to lead,” residents flooded city hall with calls
you have lead?” resident Karen Sutton asked
“They test our water and send (a) report and it looks OK.”
City officials said the water is indeed OK — there’s no cause for alarm — and ensuring safe drinking water is the reason behind the pipe inventory mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency
It’s a fact-finding mission to find out what the pipes are made of
the color of the water has nothing to do with it
“It has always been yellow in South Florida no matter where I’ve lived
The inventory will take the next few months to a year
Officials said residents in other South Florida cities may end up receiving similar letters

– A Wilton Manors man is set to appear in court for a bond hearing on Friday after police said he abused an 81-year-old woman to the point where she suffered a concussion and had her living in “poor” conditions
Officers with the Wilton Manors Police Department arrested Calvin Andra Russaw
on Sunday at his apartment in the 3000 block of North Andrews Avenue
He faces charges of aggravated abuse of an elderly or disabled adult and aggravated battery on a person 65 or older
Police said Russaw has known the victim for at least 15 years
WMPD Officer Caleb Bernstein wrote in an arrest report that her injuries included “a bruise and swelling on her forehead,” as well as a black eye and “severe discoloration around the affected area.”
officers noted that her pupils were unequal and she reported experiencing memory loss,” Bernstein wrote
“She also had multiple bumps on her head and complained of soreness in her hips.”
Doctors determined the woman suffered a concussion
Bernstein wrote that the victim told officers that Russaw has hit her “multiple times throughout knowing him” and said she is “afraid of him.”
Police said the senior was also left to live in squalor
“She has no power in her apartment and has been unable to store food for months,” Bernstein wrote
“She stated that (Russaw) frequently steals food and leaves it to spoil
Officers observed that the only light source in the apartment was a small battery-powered light.”
Russaw was being held without bond in the Broward Main Jail as of Thursday
– A recent immigration raid at a jobsite in Wilton Manors turned into a confrontation with authorities
Workers said federal agents pulled up to the site and identified themselves as Immigration and Customs Enforcement
They handcuffed one man but then came back
Witnesses said they started to ask everyone else for identification
which led to a second arrest and then a scuffle with the subcontractor
“OK if you see any people (who look) like Spanish
like we’re hiding something,” the subcontractor
Speaking to Local 10 News, he said tensions are high and he was giving legal advice to his workers
He said he was pushed as he was trying to secure one of the employee’s cellphones as he was being taken away
The general contractor then got a frantic call and was told to come out to the demolition site as well
I think was just over the top,” general contractor Jeb Schafer said
Schafer said several agencies flooded the scene
business owners like Schafer are left wondering how to handle similar situations
there’s got to be some education out there for people like me,” he said
to just make sure that they don’t get themselves in trouble.”
Wilton Manors Police Department Chief Gary Blocker said his agency “does not initiate or coordinate federal immigration enforcement actions,” saying “ICE operates independently and determines when
and how to conduct its operations,” and that ICE decides whether it will notify local law enforcement
Blocker also commented on the worksite incident
saying “our officers were called to the scene after ICE personnel encountered challenges gaining access to the individual they were seeking” and said officers
per “standard practice” responded to “identify what if any assistance was being requested of us.”
“We understand that incidents like these can cause concern in our community,” Blocker said
“Our focus as your police department will remain on local issues such as patrolling your neighborhoods
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.”
It’s still unclear exactly which agency had the confrontation with the subcontractor

– An illegal street takeover was caught on camera in Wilton Manors
Drivers were seen doing donuts just after 12:30 a.m
Friday at a busy intersection along Wilton Drive and Northeast 20th Street
It went on for about seven minutes as some of the spinning cars came very close to hitting the people who were in the road filming it
They left the intersection pretty marked up and also left a lot of people concerned about the safety of the pedestrians who frequent the area
and everyone is trying to record with their phone
like trying to record from different angles
“I wake up and I’m in the middle of a Drake music video
Eventually a Wilton Manors police officer moved in with their lights flashing
because somebody could have died if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Arias
Wilton Manors police released a statement which read
“Last night our community was the victim of an illegal street takeover
a crime that’s been on the rise…out police officers swiftly responded prior to receiving the first 9-1-1 calls
Our officers intervened and caused the subjects to flee
The state of Florida recently increased penalties for street takeovers like this

and I don’t want to worry about a Nissan Altima knocking me out while I’m playing Beyonce walking down the street,” said Arias
– Three men are battling for the mayor’s seat in a small city in Broward County that is home to nearly 12,000 residents
known as much for its colorful business corridor as it is for its significant LGBTQ+ population
But Mike Sansevero believes the city could be better
“The lack of growth is catching up with us as a city,” he said
The openly gay realtor and attorney from New York settled into town nearly 20 years ago and launched his bid to become mayor during a very crucial time
“The big surprise this year was the 10% tax increase
financial responsibility is necessary,” Sansevero said
while pay raises for city workers are being slashed to help balance the budget
and the mathematics major thinks he knows why
“The city has been kind of stagnant in terms of growth
so for the last 20 years there’s been almost no new construction or growth,” said Sansevero
Sansevero is up against Mark Beigay in the nonpartisan race to try to unseat current Mayor Scott Newton
I support the LGBT community,” said Beigay
“There are always room for improvement and I think I can get in there from day one and make that city run smoother.”
Beigay is a political newcomer who has only lived in Wilton Manors for a year
He was asked if he thinks that is an asset or a detriment
seeing things from a different view,” he said
The incumbent in this race has spent more time at city hall than either of the candidates
serving on various boards and the city commission over the past few decades
but Newton became mayor after the untimely death of the city’s previous leader
A brain aneurysm claimed Flippin’s life in 2020 and the tragedy ended the city’s unique reputation of being run by an all LGBTQ+ commission
“Everyone talks about equality,” said Newton
we have four LGBTQ+ members on my board and I’m straight
Newton says his eyes are focused on the future
He applauds his work of uniting various groups and organizations across the city
He was asked what still needs to be done under his leadership
we started some things in our city about development
and they’re going to come to fruition in the next couple of years and I want to make sure I’m there to make sure that they do what they said they were gonna do,” he said
