Do not sell or share my personal information:
some of my absolute favorite moments resulted from cool
calm days where I had all of the time in the world to sling .22 rounds at dime-sized targets — and with little concern about ammo cost or being battered by the forces of recoil
As I investigated what else the rimfire world had in store for me, I would repeatedly come across articles referencing some of the kings of the category: the Winchester 52 and the Remington 37
Many of these designs were once considered the gold standard of accuracy within 100 yards and my interest was firmly piqued
my dreams of owning these legends dissipated once I picked them up
I’m a lot more excited by those rifles that
represent a golden mean between raw accuracy and ease of use
Indulge me and I’ll tell you what I think makes for a perfect “offhand plinker.”
affordable rifles and many of them have been of extraordinarily high quality
I learned recently that Ruger has produced more than 5 million of its famous 10/22 rifles
I would reason that within a half-hour drive of your current location
It’s no mystery why the rifles are beloved
and tolerant of a wide variety of ammunition
the groups I coaxed out of a 10/22 got me to think about shooting differently
“Maybe I have some talent for this,” I told myself
America’s used gun market is awash with a number of .22LR rifles intended as either entry-level tools for pest control or “boy’s” or “youth” rifles that would serve as a child’s first introduction to marksmanship without mom or dad having to break the bank
and Stevens 15 are all prototypical examples of the type
easily operated and despite their humble origins and no-frills materials
spend some time with them and their limitations come into focus
Most have very simple folded metal or “buckhorn” sights
thin barrels prone to heating up quickly and stiff triggers
Budget price points often necessitated budget materials so expect beechwood or plastic stocks
along with stamped steel construction of various small parts
The Bergara BMR — Its light weight makes for a rifle that can still be comfortably shot offhand even with a mounted scope
Winchester 63 with a period-correct Weaver low-magnification scope
As one moves from “budget” to “premium” in the rimfire rifle category
A 26″ tent-pole of a barrel not only offers more runway for the powder of a rimfire cartridge to fully and completely burn
but it gives open sight users more distance to ensure perfect alignment between the front and rear units
The barrel thickness also ensures it heats and cools in a more uniform manner
which reduces any temperature-based point of impact shifts
you’ll also usually find very generous and beautiful walnut furniture
often with metal fixtures for the buttstock
One look at these guns and you’ll immediately be transported back to an era where no cost was spared to provide the rimfire shooter with the best accuracy the day’s engineering and experience could allow
Most of the .22s you’ll find in rimfire competitions tend to be big
Extra mass provides more stability and precision
but makes it a rifle much harder to heft and shoot offhand
It’s not to say one can’t do so but those interested in the attempt normally have specialized shooting jackets dedicated to such a purpose
The same goes for adding one of the most common and historic tools for improving one’s group: the scope
“Ounces make pounds.” Where rimfire rifles are concerned
wood-stocked rifle from the realm of “challenging” to “impromptu strength training.” Show me a guy who can heft a scoped Winchester 52D and shoot a great group offhand
and I’ll show you a guy who looks like Hulk Hogan
the Ruger 10/22 is well-represented in America’s gun stores
many of the design specs and equipment choices maximizing mechanical precision come at the expense of practical accuracy
In simpler terms: Bring the scope to eye level
and your arms will almost instantly begin to feel like wet noodles and the reticle will wobble all over the place
To quote the old infomercials: There has to be a better way
there is no shortage of rimfire rifles which got an extra degree of TLC from the maker over the budget model yet weren’t fully optimized for bench work
The Winchester 69 remains perhaps my favorite rifle of all time
the trigger guard is stamped steel and the trigger pull isn’t astoundingly light
I also have a tremendous affinity for a number of quality pump-action rifles. Often, models like the Remington 12, Winchester 62 and Browning Trombone exhibit very high quality workmanship
and shucking rounds in and out of these platforms is a joy
Just about any mag or tube-fed rifle with a thinner barrel
decent wood and a good set of aperture sights has my eye
I find “peep” sights allow for tremendous practical accuracy without the weight of a scope and mounts
yet they also eschew the alignment imprecision that often goes hand-in-hand with buckhorns or folded steel sights
One key to finding a great offhand plinker is to look for the phrase “sporter.” Through the generations
the term has defined guns designed to be used afield — i.e.
Winchester made its storied 52 in a “sporter” configuration (a gun perpetually on my “one day” list)
and Browning still makes its excellent T-bolt rifle as a sporter
The wood-stocked version of Springfield’s new 2020 Waypoint rimfire rifle also comes with an accuracy guarantee and a stated weight of 6 lbs.
composite materials help to keep the weight down
I purchased my Bergara BMR not only because of the Spanish gunmaker’s well-established reputation but because it was light enough for me to heft even with a scope included
With a user-adjustable trigger — currently set at 2.5 lbs
exactly — and capable of eye-popping groups from the bench
I don’t feel like I’m giving up much to the walnut-stocked
Our own Massad Ayoob recently wrote he didn’t like the finger grooves on the third-generation GLOCKs because he didn’t like a gun telling him how he needed to shoot it
The same goes for me with the weight of many .22 rifles — a gun telling me it needs to live on the bench isn’t usually one that’s fun for me to work with
the long guns I’ve gravitated to might very well give up some accuracy at the 50-yard line and beyond
I don’t know how many dudes are winning rimfire matches with clapped out “department store” rifle
playing cards and wood chips obliterated by my ugly
dinged-up .22 and the slight impact shift between a hot and cold barrel doesn’t normally matter on targets I don’t need magnification to see
the more time I seem to spend with designs historically positioned as youth rifles
the feats of marksmanship putting a smile on my face are those coming as a result of me using my own two eyes and hands to zap something just at the threshold of my vision
I’m going to reach for a .22 rifle to scratch the itch
If it’s been some time since you’ve gotten away from the bench rest
or if you’re the kind of shooter who has regarded any sort of .22 as a novelty
It probably won’t cost you very much and I bet you’ll immediately rediscover just how fun offhand shooting can be

The local food scene is alive and thriving in the Monadnock Region
and one town’s goal to promote its farmers and producers is attracting larger crowds every year
The Winchester Local Food Festival will return for its eighth year this Saturday
and it promises to be bigger and better than ever
Sponsored by the Winchester Revitalization and Economic Development (RED) Committee and the Winchester Farmer’s Market on Main and organized by volunteers
the festival is a free community event that celebrates the area’s local food purveyors
both inside Winchester Town Hall and in outside areas
who is both the RED Committee chair and a farmers market vendor
the number of vendors for the festival has reached about 40 this time around
The inspiration for the first festival stemmed from an attempt to grow the farmers market and it was initially a collaboration with the Cheshire County Conservation District
as the event serves as the official kick-off to the market season
It was then picked up as a RED Committee event as part of its mission to promote the natural and economic assets of Winchester through business support and its commitment to downtown revitalization efforts
A sampling of the food festival vendors includes New England Sweetwater Farm & Distillery (barbecue sauce)
Cha’s Convenience Store (fried chicken tenders)
Manning Hill Farm (milk) and Mama Maria’s Gyros & More
Local food products like honey and maple syrup will also be available for purchase
In addition to vendors who will be offering hearty free samples of delicious food (while they last)
there will also be hands-on activities for all ages
handmade crafts and live music by Scott Alan Savoy and Lenny Solomon
Other exhibitors on-hand will be area nonprofits
the Conant Public Library and a cake sale by the Winchester Historical Society
Interactive activities planned for the day are handloom demonstrations by Handweaving by Nancy
shimmering tinsel hair extensions by Fairy Hair By Jess and Fullam Meadow Farm will be bringing lambs
“The event has grown quite a bit,” Koerber said of its increasing popularity
And the crowds have kept multiplying as well
The event’s Facebook page has already attracted a large number of responses this year and that’s a good sign for attendance
Ample free parking is available for the event on Main Street and behind the Winchester Town Hall
as well as at Winchester School on Parker Street if needed
Koerber is a regular food vendor at the farmers market as owner of Jason’s Bread
He’s now the volunteer farmers’ market manager
“It’s my way of connecting with the community and the townspeople,” he said
Additional RED Committee endeavors throughout the year include a summer music series
the Ashuelot Covered Bridge Dinner (which will return this year)
Scarecrows in the Park and a Holiday Bazaar
the food festival aims to shine a light on the vital contributions of the local food producers who live and work in this small town and the nearby area
“It’s exciting to have something to draw people to Winchester,” he said
“We have a lot of farms and really good restaurants in town that we like to showcase.”
For more information, visit or send a message to the Winchester Farmer’s Market on Main Facebook page at facebook.com/WinchesterFarmersMarketonMain or email winchesterfarmersmarket@gmail.com. Read more about the Winchester RED Committee’s efforts at winchester-nh.gov/red-committee

will receive a much-needed capital infusion amid legal and financial troubles
In a move signaling further consolidation within the ammunition industry, on January 21, 2025, Olin Winchester, a large ammunition and chemicals manufacturer based in Clayton, Missouri, announced its intent to acquire the ammunition manufacturing business of Ammo Inc.
pending the fulfillment of these conditions
Olin’s Winchester division, established in 1866, is the largest producer of small-caliber ammunition for the U.S. military, and it operates the government’s nearly 4,000-acre Lake City Army Ammunition Plant
As the operator of the Lake City facility, Olin Winchester is currently permitted to sell surplus military ammunition to civilians — particularly .223 Remington, 5.56mm NATO, and 7.62mm NATO rounds for AR-platform weapons — and a New York Times investigation revealed that Lake-City-produced ammunition had been used in at least 12 mass shootings involving AR-15s
With the purchase of Ammo Inc.’s ammunition business
Olin Winchester continues to expand its manufacturing capabilities for commercial ammunition sales
has faced several financial and legal troubles:

Less than a month before he passed away from cancer
Eric Leedberg and his partner Wendy Snow travelled to Cape Cod
Eric has a boutonniere pinned to his polo shirt
Snow would later say that she and Eric married that afternoon on a South Yarmouth beach
But if and when the couple ever legally married — and who may have performed the ceremony — is now at the center of a criminal case
New Hampshire town clerk Jim Tetreault was arrested last week on accusations of records fraud after he signed a marriage license
more than two months after the purported ceremony on Cape Cod — and a month after Eric Leedberg’s death
initially told investigators that he performed the ceremony in his living room on the evening of Sept
2023 but that there were no other witnesses present besides the supposed bride and groom
The investigator assigned to the case warned Tetreault that signing a marriage license involving someone who is deceased “was an issue.”
Tetreault acknowledged that he signed the marriage license in November
saying he had been friends with her for years
He also admitted knowing that Leedberg had passed away
Eric Leedberg would go on to run a local landscaping company
He died surrounded by his family following a two-year battle with cancer at the age of 53
(None of his immediate family members were willing to speak with NHPR for this story.)
Wendy Snow is listed as Eric’s “significant other” in the obituary
Wendy had legally changed her name to Wendy Leedberg-Snow
According to a name change petition filed in August 2023
Snow told the court that she wanted to “change my name in honor of another person who has greatly impacted my life and would provide unity with the family.”
The petition makes no mention of an upcoming wedding
It isn’t clear if any members of Leedberg’s family were aware of the name change before Eric’s death
the family contacted the state’s Vital Records office after seeing Leedberg-Snow’s name listed as “spouse” on Eric’s death certificate
Vital Records staff launched their own review of the marriage license signed by Tetreault
gathering statements from the family as well as other materials
which were eventually turned over to law enforcement
Wendy Leedberg-Snow declined a request for comment for this story
She has not been accused of any wrongdoing
according to the Attorney General’s office
Tetreault is accused of felony vital records fraud
as well as a misdemeanor count of notarial misconduct
He remains in his elected post as Winchester’s town clerk and tax collector
“Jim is a well respected member of the community,” said Ben Kilanski
told NHPR when asked about whether the town may seek to remove or discipline Tetreault
“He’s done his job with respect to town clerk very well.”
Tetreault is scheduled to be arraigned next month in Keene District Court

"It just kind of has that extra layer of being able to go beyond the boundaries of you have to stay here at a restaurant or you have to stay here with a shop
it blurs those lines to make it one big open community," said Walker
