CROWN POINT — Attorneys discussed the possibility of a plea agreement in the case of a Crown Point couple accused of prostitution, sex trafficking and tax evasion at their Winfield massage parlor in 2023
During a status hearing Thursday for Guan Yu
Michael Woods said he and co-counsel Benjamen Murphy are working toward a plea agreement with prosecutors
"but there are a lot of outstanding issues to work out."
Woods asked Lake Criminal Court Judge Gina Jones to set the case for a hearing July 1 where the parties will either submit a plea or set the case for a jury trial, to which Jones agreed. She said she was reluctant to make any decisions about the case without an interpreter present, which the defense had requested at previous hearings for Yu and Liu. She told the defense to file a motion with the court for an interpreter to ensure they can proceed forward with the case at the next hearing.
The case had previously been scheduled for trial last August. Yu and Liu face felony charges of promotion of human sexual trafficking, promoting prostitution and failure to remit taxes. Liu is further charged with felony money laundering and battery against a public safety official, Lake Criminal Court records show.
Detectives started an investigation in January 2023 into Jade Massage parlor, 9001 E. 109th Ave. in Winfield, in response to multiple complaints of sexual activity being provided in return for money at the business, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Officials obtained search warrants for Jade Massage parlor, Relax Massage parlor at 1451 Summit St. in Crown Point, Yamato KJ restaurant at 10819 Randolph St. in Winfield, Sakura KJ restaurant at 204 S. Main St. in Crown Point and the couple's home in the 600 block of East 113th Place in Crown Point, the affidavit said. Large amounts of cash were found at the couple's home.
Alleged victims told investigators they found the work through a Chinese phone app. They made money through tips, the affidavit said.
Yu and Liu supposedly showed up to the business every once in awhile to collect the proceeds, according to a victim.
Investigators said they discovered Liu had frequently been going to the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana in Gary where she laundered money by purchasing casino chips, cashing some in and taking some with her, the affidavit said.

I tested the Samsonite Winfield 2 across multiple transcontinental flights
Forbes Vetted ratings are based on thorough evaluations by our editorial team to help you choose the best products with confidence.
Dimensions: 31 x 20 x 12.7 inches | Weight: 11.5 pounds | Material: Polycarbonate | Capacity: Brand doesn’t disclose
The expandable handle feels comfortable to hold. Note the other handle, which expands ever so ... More slightly too.
Just off to the left of the side handle, you’ll find a TSA-friendly lock, which was easily one of my favorite features about the suitcase. It helped bring peace of mind when traveling with my tech, and it placed the zippers in an easy-to-access spot when I needed to pull out a sweatshirt in a pinch.
Note all the scrapes around the branded tag.
The suitcase is large enough to hold a lot of my clothes and other gear
I still had space to spare without using the suitcase’s zipper extension—but since the suitcase was clocking in at 46.5 pounds
I didn’t want to risk packing more books and going over my airline’s weight limit
I was also pleasantly surprised at just how well the suitcase’s straps
curtain and organization system kept everything in place
opening it up after a flight can reveal a chaotic interior that looks like I haphazardly tossed all my gear in and zipped it shut
Despite finding a number of new scuffs on the suitcase after my trip
all of my gear looked the same as when I meticulously packed it
A suitcase must have smooth wheels for easily maneuvering through busy airports
cobbled streets and more: This is a requirement for me
The wheels are large enough to support the general bulk of the suitcase
they’re large enough to roll over large cement cracks and brick pavement with ease
The Quad Cities International Airport in Moline
has brick pavement in the main lobby area of the airport
it felt like I had to physically drag my luggage through this airport section
the Winfield 2 does a great job of smoothing out a lot of those bumps
It was significantly easier to maneuver through this section of the local airport
If you’re seeking a suitcase with large enough wheels to traverse pretty bumpy pathways
The Samsonite Winfield 2 is a great choice if you're seeking an affordable, yet durable, suitcase.
While it doesn’t hold up well to scuffs and scrapes, the suitcase for the most part is sturdy enough to withstand rough handling. Don’t expect the branded tag on the front to last for a long time, as mine came off quickly. Otherwise, I was pleased with this suitcase after using it for travel for a few months. At around $200, it’s a more affordable option that promises to last a long time.
Charlotte Edwards doesn't even like saying it anymore, instead referring to "the F-word" as new head coach of an England Women's squad who found this side of their game called into question after repeated failures on the big stage
Lauren Winfield-Hill - a veteran of 104 England caps
and the picture of a professional athlete still going strong on the domestic circuit at the age of 34 - believes "sometimes you've got to be careful with your language of what is fitness in cricket"
"I think the biggest thing is the physicality and the athleticism," she tells ESPNcricinfo
Can you get up and down for twos as a batter
And how good's your fielding; are you cutting twos
there's some big improvements to be made" in the England Women's squad
"I sort of prefer the athleticism and the physicality piece," she adds
"Sometimes we can get skewed with fitness: 'Can you run for a long time
Do you look athletic?' and all this sort of stuff and that's irrelevant."
At the T20 World Cup in Dubai in October
two straightforward catches went down amid a rash of fielding errors as West Indies raced to a powerplay of 67 without loss in pursuit of 142
A further three catches went down and England found themselves scrambling in the field as their opponents romped to a six-wicket win with two overs to spare
knocking them out of the tournament at the group stage
and the movement and the cutting twos and things like that," Winfield-Hill says
"And that's not a blanket thing for every single player
There's some players that can certainly make strides in that area
there's some players that are great athletes
Lauren Winfield-Hill made 65 off 49 Getty Images"Across the board
it's almost like your commitment to everyone else
But the fielding is the bit that you do for everyone else
If you are fielding a square leg for Lauren Bell
It's captivating this bit where we're all in and we're willing to work really damn hard for each other and go through it a bit
get in there and get some tough sessions in
get down and dirty and show how much you're willing to commit to each other."
Winfield-Hill points out that a relentless schedule
including ever-expanding franchise leagues which disperse players for extended periods of time
but says a willingness to work harder and commit to one another as team-mates is crucial
she was the leading run-scorer in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy with 470 runs at 78.33 and 663 at 51.00
She is a gun fielder and handy wicketkeeper
having assumed the latter role throughout her four seasons in The Hundred to date
she looks like one of the fittest players in the country
why is it that when professional athletes are paid to engage in physical activity
Boiled down, a lack of fitness is often seen as a euphemism for being fat because no one calls anyone fat in the media any more
At the premier of his Disney+ documentary last month
Andrew Flintoff spoke of how the media still hadn't apologised for brutally fat-shaming him 25 years ago
he revealed that the criticism had driven him to bulimia
That episode involved a cruel takedown of Flintoff's physical appearance amid leaked information over his off-field behaviour when what he really needed was help
Lauren Winfield-Hill has bounced back from a tough 2021 to return to the top of her game Royal LondonSo by the time Ollie Robinson was told privately and via the media that he needed to get fitter by Jon Lewis
the then England men's bowling coach who would go on to become England Women's head coach
conduct or the fact he had broken down a number of times during the tour
When Alex Hartley
the former England spinner turned commentator first criticised the women's team following their T20 World Cup exit she said: "I'm not going to name names
You know who's blowing a gasket and who isn't
About 80% of the England team are fit and athletic enough
but there are girls in that side who are letting the team down when it comes to fitness."
She then drew comparisons with the 15 or 16 "genuine athletes" in the Australia squad so the issue inevitably blew up again when England lost the Ashes 16-0
What it all comes down to is performance - players being able to execute the skills required to win games
Dane van Niekerk and Lizelle Lee would argue they didn't get the chance to prove themselves in that respect at the end of their international careers
Van Niekerk never played for South Africa again after failing to run 2km in the prescribed time for selected for the T20 World Cup in 2023 and Lee retired from international cricket amid a dispute over a weigh-in the previous year
Cricket South Africa subsequently relaxed fitness requirements for men and women
an increased focus on performance as a selection tool has begun with Edwards calling on all centrally contracted players to be available for the first seven rounds of the domestic 50-over competition
"I love that domestic cricket has been really valued," Winfield-Hill says
and volume of runs or wickets within the domestic structure is not really necessarily being considered
"Asking the players to play and to dominate and to perform because it's an open forum and it's a bit of a trial for everyone
You need players who are currently in possession to be kept on their toes and you'll see who the best players in the country are
It is the performance world and it should be about who performs
You're there to score runs and take wickets
and whoever's doing that should have a good opportunity of wearing an English shirt… it is the fairest way to do it
and then there's no questions about selections."
England's players look on as Australia celebrate their Women's Ashes whitewash Getty Images"I hate banging on about the Aussies
I think our domestic structure is better," says Winfield-Hill
"I feel like I'm a good judge because I've played in both countries for the last two years
Domestically we play a much larger volume of cricket and the only way you get good at cricket is by playing a lot of cricket
"But one thing they do do is they're very rigid on their selections and if you absolutely don't tear up domestic cricket and you're not a good athlete and you're not a good team person
you need to knock these people off their perch.' I'd love to see that in England."
England hopefuls have no shortage of opportunities to show what they can do under the new county-based domestic structure
Edwards has frequented the grounds throughout the opening rounds of the Metro Bank One Day Cup
where Winfield-Hill captains Yorkshire in Tier 2
The Vitality T20 Women's County Cup also gets underway on Monday
featuring teams from all three tiers of domestic cricket in a knockout competition over the next three weeks
Winfield-Hill hasn't retired from international cricket. But while she has agreed a loan deal to play for Tier 1 team Essex in the T20 blast starting later this month
she says that while her best playing years lay ahead
"I just don't necessarily realistically think that's in an England shirt"
The move to Essex seems more about testing herself by playing at the highest level possible which
with her 35th birthday approaching in August
should stand as an inspiration for players younger and older
"I've obviously got a four-year contract at Yorkshire and I'm like
I don't have to retire in four years," she says
I feel like I'm somebody that physically looks after myself
they're in their forties and they're still great athletes going really well
We put limitations on things just because it's not been done before and it's like
it can be done and you can play till you're 40 if you want to play till you're 40
The sports medicine is way better in terms of the support that you get
how you can look after yourself and the actual money means that you can keep playing without having to get 'a real job'
"I've always said I am going to play until either my body's buggered or it's not fun anymore
Now there's an F-word the England team might be happy to say in full

Winfield Township voters will have a chance at the April 1 election to declare how they want to handle the munisipal pensions driving up their property taxes – an $49.5 million debt for which they are responsible
Government pension obligations cost taxpayers in Winfield Township more than $7 million annually
While the pension debt is for municipal employees only
all voters in the township get a say in how local and state pensions should be handled
Despite spending more than $7 million annually
Winfield Township taxpayers must eventually pay more than $49.5 million to the municipal pension funds
the municipal pension funds have a funded ratio of 73%
Experts warn that pension funds with funded ratios of 60% are considered deeply troubled and municipalities within Winfield Township have pension funds dangerously close to this funding level
The Winfield Police Pension Fund has a funded ratio of 54%
This is part of the reason why property tax rates in Winfield Township are higher than the statewide average and among the highest in the nation
Property tax rates across Winfield Township exceed 2.3% – above the statewide average of 2.1% and far higher than the national average of 1%
The typical homeowner in Winfield Township pays nearly $6,600 in annual property taxes
Millions of residents’ property tax dollars are diverted away from services towards municipal pension debt within the township
leaving property taxes among the highest in the nation and driving tax bills higher every year
voters in Winfield Township will have the opportunity to begin to reverse this trend
A referendum will appear on the April 1 ballot that asks if voters would approve constitutional pension reform if savings could be directed towards property tax relief
“Do you support constitutional pension reform to protect workers’ existing retirements and generate savings which could provide property tax relief or be reinvested in the community?”
A constitutional amendment is needed because the Illinois Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that any pension changes were unconstitutional
With polls showing nearly 3 in 5 Illinoisans believe the value of public services they receive are not worth the property taxes they pay
this referendum will empower local voters to communicate their priorities directly to state leaders and start building momentum for substantive property tax reform across Illinois

but he and Isky connected like two live wires bringing light to a party as they regaled each other with stories and inspired everybody within earshot
Robert Eugene was the youngest of six children born to Frank and Virginia "Ginny"’ Winfield
built himself a hamburger wagon called Frank’s Nickel Lunch
selling hamburgers and hot dogs for five cents
Ginny purchased property and opened a full-service drive-in hamburger restaurant where the whole family
He was 10 years old and would work for the next 88 years
he was racing whatever and wherever he could
and he even held a NASCAR license from 1951 to 1953
Gene’s next big project was a ’46 Ford convertible for Al Serpa that was extensively modified with a chop
According to Ed Almquist in his book Hot Rod Pioneers
“The going rate for custom work when I first started was $5 per hour.” In white primer
Serpa’s ’46 made the June ’53 cover of Rod & Custom
Believing that he should build a car for himself to enjoy
Called ‘the Thing,’ the coupe's top was chopped 12 inches
The car was powered by a tri-carbed flathead taken from Gene's rail job
The string of cars and magazine covers was prodigious as Gene built his reputation. Then, in 1960, he built the ‘Jade Idol’ for Leroy Kemmerer of Castro Valley, California. Based on a 1956 Mercury two-door hardtop sectioned four inches, the Idol took a year and more than $15,000 to build, won just about every trophy there was to win, and featured a beautiful, faded paintjob that would come to be known as the "Winfield Fade."
Gene may have faded from our lives, and his passing leaves a big hole in the custom car world, but his legacy lives on in an amazing body of work.

Winfield Village Manager Curt Barrett is stepping down
And village officials have picked Evan Summers as the interim village manager
Summers last served as the village manager of Bensenville
village board members plan to vote Thursday night on a contract for Summers
the contract was not on the agenda as of Monday afternoon
Summers would start March 1; Barrett will finish up April 30
“Winfield has been fortunate to benefit from Curt Barrett’s acumen and skill throughout my time as a village trustee and well before that,” Village President Carl Sorgatz said in the press release
“He’s been a terrific partner and will be missed by our community.”
The release credited Barrett with improvements such as adding the Riverwalk Park bicycle and walking paths
and new recreational and cultural programs
He also was praised for improving the village’s bond rating and advancing residential and commercial development over the last 10 years
the press release cited the planning for the Town Center and negotiations between the village and Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital that resulted in the hospital’s new parking deck being placed on the property tax rolls
“Curt really worked to bring the village and hospital together and find common ground to the benefit of both institutions,” Trustee Deb Piscola said in the press release
“I am thankful for the opportunity and support to lead the wonderful community of Winfield and its great staff since 2009,” Barrett said in the press release
“With the backing of a thoughtful village board of trustees
we have been able to grow Winfield’s economy
make substantial infrastructure and amenity improvements
and achieve a record of notable financial stability.”
The press release did not mention the village’s current fight with Winfield School District 34 and West Chicago District 94
which are suing the village over the tax-increment financing district that includes the Town Center
Summers was Bensenville’s manager for eight years until the board fired him in late November
The board did not give any reason for firing him
Bensenville President Frank DeSimone said the board was grateful for Summers’ service and wished him well
the board put a referendum on the April ballot to eliminate the manager position and make the village president a full-time job
DeSimone is running unopposed for reelection

An Indiana man convicted of murder was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole last week
The only possible prison sentence for first-degree murder in the state of Iowa is life in prison without the possibility of parole
Winfield was also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to Curry's children by a Johnson County District Court judge
The payments are to be received by the Johnson County Clerk and will be disbursed to the children once they turn 18 or if a conservatorship or trust is set up in their name
Winfield filed a notice of appeal on Monday
Winfield asked the court to evaluate his ability to pay the $150,000 restitution to Curry's children
His appeal will go to the Iowa Supreme Court
More: Jury has reached a verdict on sixth day of Renard Winfield murder trial
The two were familiar with one another after a 2020 encounter in which Curry allegedly shot Winfield in the leg outside of an Iowa City apartment
An Iowa City police officer testified that he spoke with Winfield and asked him to identify the person who had shot him
Prosecutors said Winfield created an account on the Plenty of Fish dating app
told Curry to meet him at the Meadowlark Apartments in southeast Iowa City
Text messages allegedly show an interaction between Winfield and Curry where the two took nearly 45 minutes to settle on a location to meet
Curry sent a final message to the person he believed was a woman
calling her "petty (as hell)" after a lengthy back-and-forth produced little information about where they would meet
More: Authorities identify body found in Lake MacBride as 85-year-old Cedar Rapids man
Ballistic evidence showed that Winfield fired his gun about 15 times
Several shell casings recovered from the scene were dyed blue
matching the blue ammunition Winfield bought from the Coralville Scheel's a few days before the shooting
More: A West Branch nursing home is being sued after an intruder was found undressed in a resident's bed
Investigators also visited Winfield's Indiana home
where they discovered a box of blue ammunition
A video on Winfield's phone that was shown at trial appeared to depict Winfield loading the blue bullets into a firearm before the shooting
Winfield searched online for information on Curry
which may not have yet been public information at the time

could picture in our mind’s eye all sorts of crazy automotive creations—vehicles worthy of our favorite TV show or superhero
souped-up and kitted-out versions of normal cars that
Few could bring ideas into reality like hot-rodder Gene Winfield
who passed away at the age of 97 on March 4
but even if you don’t count yourself among the hot-rod faithful
you’ve probably seen one of his creations—especially if you’re a fan of ’80s sci fi
He didn’t just build the Galileo II from Star Trek
and the Reactor driven by Captain Kirk; he built 25 cars for the first Blade Runner movie
including the police car driven by Decker (Harrison Ford)
Winfield built his first hot rod as a high schooler during WWII
that he learned welding and hammering techniques
As he told Hagerty contributor Lyn Woodward in 2018: “Before I went to Japan
but I didn’t know how to control the metal.”
How did he live that long painting in lacquer
Gene didn’t just build cars; he raced them
before Jade Idol burst onto the scene in 1960
Winfield had built a 1927 Model T and driven it to 135 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats
with Gene behind the wheel … in 2013
We managed to catch up with Winfield in 2018, at The Race of Gentlemen (“TROG”) on the beach of Wildwood
He was behind the wheel of another of his creations: a 1932 Ford roadster he had built in the late ’40s
the ’32 made the cover of Hot Rod Magazine—one of many covers that Winfield would secure
His favorite memory from his racing years was from 1962
when he brought four trophies home from El Mirage in one day—two for record-setting runs and two for fastest times
He had towed a T-rail dragster out to the desert behind his chopped 1950 Mercury
and he raced both cars in various configurations
modified roadster and modified coupe classes
“I still have a picture of myself holding four trophies that day,” he recalls
they changed the rules the next year so you could only run one body class in a day.”
Gene was the type of guy who just couldn’t stop making things—in his case, hot rods. When we visited his shop
You’d never guess by watching Winfield maneuver around his shop that his own odometer rolled past 90 last year
He strides proudly through his rusting chaos
his wavy matinee-idol hair perfectly groomed
He introduces his countless metal-shaping tools
as if they were old friends at a cocktail party
an electric reciprocating machine that shapes and cuts metal
to an old solid-steel riveter from Lockheed
“Retirement is when they put you in the ground,” he quips
Another famous figure in Winfield’s orbit include Chip Foose
whose father worked as shop foreman and painter in Winfield’s shop
Gene was inducted into the Grand National Roadster Show Hall of Fame in 1961 and into Legends of the Autorama in 2007
Winfield’s creations won America’s Most Beautiful Roadster three times: 1955
the one award that eluded Winfield’s grasp was the Autorama’s top prize: The Ridler
win Detroit Autorama Builder of the Year in 2008 and the NHRA’s lifetime achievement award
“I like to teach everything I’ve learned in the many
many years I’ve been doing this,” Winfield says
“I want to teach it all because I don’t want it to be a dying art
Don’t expect to be seeing Gene’s cars up for auction — according to the caption of a post on his shop’s Instagram from five days ago:
“Genes museum remains untouched where he has stored it and is at no time to be dismantled or intended for sale as per his instructions
Gene wants his museum to remain as a tribute to the hot rod culture and his life
He does not want anyone to make money from his collection or his name
It’s unclear exactly what is meant by the museum—presumably
it refers to the property and shop of Winfield’s Rod and Customs
A few things are for sure: The work he leaves behind tells his story
and few people in the car community left behind a more colorful legacy than Gene Winfield
Gene was the last of the old original custom builders
He was doing great work up to not long ago
He worked with us at work about two years ago and was still doing high grade work
We really have one of the old time hot rodders left and that is Ed at Isky cams
He makes Garlits just a kid at over 100 plus years old and still working last I heard
Star Trek in particular on the shuttle craft is pretty cool

VATICAN CITY (AP) — He called me “la prima della classe,” or “the first in class.” It wasn’t necessarily a compliment
“It’s the victims who are saying this,” I told him
“I haven’t heard from any victim of Barros,” Francis responded
There are victims of Karadima who say that Barros was there!”
“But they didn’t come forward,” Francis replied
but I haven’t seen them because they didn’t present themselves.”
By the genteel standards of Vatican protocol
Francis could have dug in or retaliated against me and other journalists who challenged him so publicly
His response — commissioning an investigation and
apologizing to the victims for discrediting them — underscored what friends and foes alike saw as one of Francis’ most remarkable attributes: a willingness to admit mistakes and change course
In a 2023 interview with The Associated Press
Francis acknowledged the 2018 airborne news conference was a turning point — the moment he understood the depths of the abuse scandal
when I saw the corruption of many bishops in this,” he said
making a gesture indicating his head had exploded
Francis already had bestowed the nickname on me
Again aboard Air Pope One heading to Ireland
In Italian it can be translated as “the first in class.” But it can also carry a negative connotation: a know-it-all
I saw the nickname as Francis’ grudging acknowledgement that AP and I had accurately called him out and corrected him
covering him in the tough but fair way that met our standards and which was perhaps behind his respect for our work
it showed how his relationship with the press evolved over time
Francis made clear his discomfort with journalists
He had had negative experiences in Argentina
where his record as head of the Jesuits in the 1970s during the military dictatorship and his tenure as Buenos Aires archbishop had put him in the media crosshairs
it’s just that way,” Francis told reporters traveling to Brazil in 2013 for his first foreign trip as pope
Francis loosened up and his airborne news conferences became a new chapter in papal communication
His comments sometimes required official clarifications
but they pushed the envelope in ways he couldn’t in speeches or documents on issues like LGBTQ+ outreach or the role of women in the church
Francis granted more interviews than his two predecessors combined
using the media to speak to his flock in the informal
personal style that characterized his papacy

Our last substantive encounter came in January 2024
when reporters met with him in the Apostolic Palace
I was concerned with an impending work-life conflict: My daughter would be starting college in late August and our family was planning to be in New England to attend orientation and move her into her dorm
rumors were circulating that Francis would embark on his longest
most ambitious trip: a four-nation tour of Asia that
Francis greeted the journalists individually
summoning both maternal desperation and nothing-to-lose chutzpah
Francis listened intently — he often asked about my children — as I suggested
that delaying the Asia trip would enable me to cover it
and I figured I could at least tell my daughter I had tried
knowing I’d inevitably have to tell her the Asia trip would take precedence
I didn’t dare think my impromptu conversation as Francis met scores of journalists could have entered into the complicated calculations of organizing a papal trip
But I later received a breathless voicemail from someone close to Francis who had just met with him
“You will not believe what he told me,“ he said
The pope said he changed the dates of the trip to ensure I could come
I still don’t know if other factors affected what became the last major foreign journey of Francis’ life

Last month, Kansas became the 26th state to ban or otherwise limit gender-affirming medical care for minors, according to KFF
It’s the latest in a series of state laws restricting the rights of transgender Kansans

Catholics and mainline Protestants across races were relatively evenly divided on the issue
white evangelical Protestants and Latter-day Saints said they support the bans

guilty of first-degree murder on Tuesday evening
Winfield is facing a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or probation
the only punishment for the Class "A" felony in the state of Iowa
Lawyers delivered their closing arguments earlier today at the Johnson County Courthouse earlier in the day before sending the jury off to deliberate just after 1 p.m
Winfield is an Indiana man who prosecutors accuse of catfishing and shooting and killing Tommy Curry at a southeast Iowa City apartment complex in April 2021
Prosecutors believe the alleged killing was an "act of revenge."
More: Winfield murder trial: Prosecutors try to prove Winfield was in Iowa City before killing
Witnesses who took the stand included apartment residents
Winfield's attorneys pleaded his case on Monday though Winfield did not testify before the defense rested its case Tuesday morning
The jury began deliberating the case shortly after 1 p.m
Here's everything that happened on the sixth day of the trial:
The 12-person jury rendered a guilty verdict against Winfield shortly after 5:30 p.m
ending a six-day trial about three-and-a-half hours after deliberations began
Winfield sat quietly in his maroon suit at the defense table alongside his lawyers
His family returned to the courtroom just before the verdict was read and was also silent
Curry's family also returned to the courtroom shortly before the verdict was read
who has been in the courtroom for almost every second of the trial
slowly filled up just before the verdict was read
It remained largely silent before the verdict was read
Assistant Johnson County Attorney Oubonh Phomvisay White delivered the closing argument for the state
mirroring her co-counsel's opening argument: "Revenge is a dish best served cold."
White referenced evidence and testimony to suggest that Winfield "trapped," "lured" and "executed" Curry
crime scene photographs and ballistic evidence
saying that the evidence proves Winfield's guilt
Defense Attorney Michael Adams tried to dispute the state's evidence
arguing that while Winfield and his defense team believe that Curry was "murdered," the state has not proven that Winfield committed the crime
More: Ballistics and surveillance take center stage on third day of Winfield murder trial
Each side urged the jury to consider the evidence presented based on observations and "common sense."
Prosecutors said that Winfield "acted willfully
premeditatedly and with intent to kill" Curry to be guilty of first-degree murder and they believed the evidence had proved that
one purpose: To kill Tommy Curry," White told the jury
Adams said the evidence that connected Winfield to the crime scene "set the tone for the entire investigation" and did not prove that his client shot and killed Curry
Adams said a lack of evidence failed to show that Winfield carried out a plot for revenge
Adams also said Winfield does not know who shot him in 2020
though prosecutors suggested that Winfield believed Curry shot him
inspiring Winfield to kill Curry three years later
More: Murder trial begins for man accused of catfishing, killing man in alleged 'revenge' plot
Adams presented surveillance video near the Meadowlark Apartment complex where Curry was shot that shows Winfield's mother's Dodge Journey
Adams argues that the distance of the footage taken from a Ring doorbell camera makes it difficult to prove it was the vehicle Winfield had been driving
Other white vehicles pass through during the course of the footage
and someone allegedly runs past the camera's view a few minutes later
have consistently questioned witnesses about whether individuals can enter and exit the Meadowlark Apartment complex on foot
Adams questioned the validity of email and social media evidence that was presented in court
State prosecutors said that Winfield posed as a woman on the dating app "Plenty of Fish," and eventually directed Curry to the Meadowlark Apartments and shot him dead in his car
Adams questioned whether prosecutors correctly confirmed who sent the messages
"Have you been firmly convinced that he himself sent those messages
Or could someone else have done it?" Adams said
Prosecutors are allowed to speak last during closing arguments
where White emphatically refuted many of the defense's arguments
"A mere possibility is not reasonable doubt," White said
She referenced evidence that allegedly linked Winfield's phone numbers and email addresses with Curry
including past email messages sent shortly after Winfield was shot in 2020
More: Iowa City man sentenced to two years probation for firing shots new Iowa City High
White referenced messages allegedly sent before the murder
Winfield allegedly said he had "found the right guy."
provided no evidence to prove some of the possibilities they presented on Tuesday
Deliberations were expected to continue until 4:30 p.m
