is the first baby to be born at Winnemucca's Humboldt General Hospital who participated in Donor Network West’s birth tissue donation program
WINNEMUCCA—Humboldt General Hospital has partnered with Donor Network West to bring the first birth tissue donation program to rural Nevada
They bring the program to expecting parents who are willing participants
“We thought it was important to offer this opportunity to all mothers
not just the large population centers,” Matt Graves
vice president of tissue operations at Donor Network West
“We just started our first few donations this month in April
if the pregnancy is healthy and they are interested in donating the birth tissue
“they give us a call and we obtain the authorization and necessary legal paperwork,” Graves said
the placenta is collected in a sterile condition so it can be used for transplant
Graves said donating the birth tissue does not affect the birth plan
“This only happens if everything goes well with the pregnancy,” he said
“If there’s a complication during birth and the mother becomes at risk or anything like that
then obviously that comes first versus the donation.”
Logistics can pose a barrier for organizations to work with local hospitals
Humboldt General Hospital was willing to take on the challenge
“Donor Network West feels strongly about making sure that this is not just for communities that are easy to access
but also providing this to the rural communities as well – even if it takes a little bit more work.”
Graves said that a placental tissue donation can help over 100 different people
“The way the placenta membranes are used is almost like a human-derived Band-Aid,” he said
if there’s a surgical wound or an ulcer that’s not healing
you can place this membrane over to provide a barrier
“It also recruits the body’s own healing process to take over and helps people feel better sooner
the placenta is just thrown in the garbage
this is an opportunity for that tissue to actually go on and help other people and be a part of a positive thing
“Their team is great to work with,” he said of the Humboldt General Hospital
“They’re enthusiastic about getting their patients the care they need
and this is just one example that we’ve seen in our partnership with them.”

In what was the biggest win of his mixed martial arts career
Winnemucca's Mario Bautista edged UFC Hall of Famer Jose Aldo via split decision at UFC 307 from Salt Lake City
The bout was Bautista's seventh win a row within the UFC
who improved his UFC record to 9-2 while Aldo's dropped to 14-8
The Lowry High School graduate's last loss came on March 6
2021 when he was knocked out by Trevin Jones at UFC 259 in Las Vegas
Fans inside the packed Delta Center were quick to boo Bautista for the way he got it done
seemingly avoiding a back-and-forth striking match with Aldo and instead focusing on grappling and keeping Aldo against the fence
sometimes referred to as "wall and stall." Aldo's star status also put the crowd behind him from the opening walkouts
"My game plan was to keep a lot of movement
stay active and wrestle when I can," Bautista told the UFC commentator Joe Rogan after having his hand raised as the winner
I wasn't going to let those failed takedown attempts stop me from getting in and wearing him out."
Added Bautista: "He didn't get off the cage
It was Bautista's ninth win in the UFC and first via split-decision
He's won four bouts via unanimous decision
the former Lowry High wrestler is now 15-2 as a professional fighter
was enshrined in the Hall of Fame and then returned to The Octagon
marked the 31-year-old Bautista's best victory to date
"I'm here to win," Bautista told Rogan
Bautista told reporters he had to do "what he had to do." Asked if he thought he had done enough
he was getting after it a little bit," Bautista said
"But he gave up a lot of time on the cage
Last year, Bautista joined NSN Tonight and talked about representing Winnemucca and reaching the UFC
if the resources aren't there for you to do it
you'll find a way and there are resources out there
you can get it done and you can actually achieve your dreams."
Bautista, who now lives and trains in Arizona, has moved up to No. 9 in the UFC's latest Bantamweight rankings

Nevada is nothing if not eclectic. A short walk down the Vegas Strip will prove that
But what if we told you that many of Nevada's most eclectic attractions are not in Vegas but in some of the smallest communities in some of the most far-flung locations
From a Western Nevadan town with Western European sheepherders to a pottery hub at the bottom of a mountain to a remote desert settlement right out of a video game (literally)
behold the weird and wonderful Nevada way off the Strip
Of all places to find sheep and shepherds that derive from the minority Basque culture of Spain/France, Western/Northern Nevada is probably most unexpected. This region attracted bunches of Basques during and after the Gold Rush
Basque shepherds provided fantastic food and wool and carved out a needed niche in the New Country
a 6,200ish-person town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada
It is not uncommon to see Borda sheep in the hills or to eat Borda sheep at the JT Basque Bar and Dining Room
Wash it down with another Basque staple: picon punch
Once a booming community with thousands of residents
Rhyolite went bust but its ruins ironically brought new life as a tourist attraction
It helps that the Goldwell Open Air Museum
which contains a dozen unique art installations
After seeing ruins and sculptures evoking ancient times
beat back—or forward—to Beatty proper for bites at the Death Valley Nut & Candy Co
temporary Tuscarorans can tour boomtown relics and climb Mount Blitzen
Contrasting the park's primitive homesteads are colorful Victorian abodes like the Genoa Courthouse and The Pink House
Both can be toured before knocking back tall beers and taller tales at the Genoa Bar and Saloon
which is billed as the oldest bar in Nevada's oldest surviving non-Native settlement
Goodsprings does have a separate economy via the Pioneer Saloon and Goodsprings General Store
but after Fallout put the town in its fourth installment
Goodsprings sprung to life with a new cast of characters
thousands of costumed Fallout fans descend on Goodsprings to play apocalypse in the real world
The event is called the Fallout New Vegas Celebration and
the Pioneer Saloon and Goodsprings General Store are important locations
Eureka was supposedly named by a prospector after he exclaimed while discovering silver in the area
That metal attracted many more prospectors and built the town into a legitimate metropolis
which was built in the 1880s for grand events and has nearly as many seats as modern Eureka has residents
which was built around the same time as an office for The Eureka Sentinel and now houses printing artifacts
Forget Vegas, Nevada, and visit Non-Vegas Nevada for an eclectic vacation. In the aforementioned small, rural towns are mini-strips lined with unique attractions, ranging from the JT Basque Bar and Dining Room in Gardnerville to the Eureka Opera House in Eureka to the Gold Hill Hotel & Saloon in Virginia City to the Goldfield Hotel in Goldfield. Those are the true gems of the Silver State. Start mining.

Paleoindians are often thought of as pioneering explorers or expert mammoth hunters
But new dating of geometric rock carvings in Nevada’s Winnemucca Lake basin now suggests they were also accomplished artists
A team led by University of Colorado paleoclimatologist Larry Benson was able to date the carbonate crust that covers the petroglyphs
Benson concluded that the artwork must have been created more than 10,000 years ago
before the carvings were submerged beneath the lake’s higher waters and covered in carbonate
“We just didn’t know they were that old.” According to Benson
it’s possible that paleoartists made the carvings as early as 15,000 years ago
Just what those artists meant to depict is unclear
Some of the petroglyphs may represent clouds and lightning
and there are some patterns that might represent trees

One notable place where Winnemucca’s Basque heritage is celebrated is Nevada’s oldest restaurant: the Martin Hotel
The story of the Martin Hotel begins in 1913
Martin and Elisee Henri Martin moved to Winnemucca and assumed the operations of a local tavern
first built as a brothel in the late 19th century
The hotel wasn’t their first entrepreneurial venture; according to a letter written by their son
the couple had run a French restaurant in Reno and later “went broke on a sheep deal” in the Sierras when the sheep were killed in a cloudburst.
It was especially popular with men in the livestock business
who came for dinner and a place to sleep when passing through town
“It was not unusual for a sheepherder to come in from his long stay with the sheep; be paid off in full for his work and then turn this entire sum over to my father,” Rene Martin recalled.
revenue department officials raided the attic and poured the booze onto the street
where locals came with cups to scoop up samples
Today, the Martin no longer operates as a hotel, but its revelrous spirit remains intact. The dining room features long, family-style tables and original embossed tin ceiling and wall panels
You’ll want to come hungry: In the evenings
all meals are served “in the Basque tradition,” including wine
mixed drinks are categorized on the menu by their date of origin
from the Noriega Picon—a twist on a classic Manhattan first served circa 1893—to the Mary Pickford

The Martin provides room and board to musicians and other performing artists as the home of Great Basin Arts and Entertainment, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping culture alive in Winnemucca. Those artists frequently perform on-site. Visit the GBAE website to see if there are any upcoming shows

was a professional saddle bronc rider; his uncles Mike and Leonardo tackled bareback and bull riding; and his aunt
who was born in Boise and raised inWinnemucca
Those at this year's Reno Rodeo remembered Montero
one of the PRCA's best bareback riders who unexpectedly died while competing last August
as a kind soul who left a big impact on the rodeo world
"What a great guy he was," saidVisalia
You could see how good his heart was just from the outside
And he just left a mark on people right after they met him
I was so lucky to know him as a buddy for the time I got to know him
Montero spent multiple weeks in a Boise hospital after suffering major injuries at the Owyhee County Rodeo in Homedale
He died20 days after suffering those catastrophic ailments
After finishing a 79-point ride on Macza Pro Rodeo's Half Crow
That led to Montero suffering severe injuries that included lacerations to his spleen and pancreas; three fractured ribs; a fractured sternum; a collapsed lung; bilateral pelvic fractures; and damage to his aorta
Montero got up and walked out of the arena before being unable to catch his breath and going to the hospital
dealing a traumatic blow to the PRCA as Montero was considered one of rodeo's ultimate competitors and gentlemen
and he didn't care whether he rode a 64 or 92," saidsaddle bronc riderMitch Pollock
There's very few of us Nevada cowboys that rodeo at this level
He won a couple 'go-round' buckles
I just wish the best for his family."
just five weeks before Trenten's death.Montero got his PRCA card in 2011 before attending New Mexico State
He won theCollege National Finals Rodeo all-around before specializing in bareback after college
Montero qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in 2019 andwon the second round on the famous bucking horse Prairie Rose
He finished 10th in the world standings that season with$170,296 in winnings
"The loss of Trenten was terrible for all the cowboys
not just the roughstock guys," Elko steer wrestling Dakota Eldridge said
"I grew up with him in the junior rodeo and he was a heck of a competitor back then
He was really tough to beat at the junior rodeos in the all-around because he could ride bucking calves and cows and then could rope just as good
you drift apart but every time I'd see him
'How's everything?' His wife and his little kid
We pray for him a lot and hopefully someday that little kid will carry on his legacy."
was just 31 when he died competing in the sport he loved
His death shook up the rodeo world with this year's competitors in Reno acknowledging the risks they take in the arena
"It makes you realize what can happen in the sport
and you're putting your life on the line every time you nod your head,"Holman said
"There's so much love that goes into the sport as well
it really brought the rodeo community together and just made us that much closer."
Eldridge said he was at the same rodeo where Montero suffered those life-ending injuries
He regrets not catching up with Montero before his ride last August
saying that's a life lesson he'll carry forward
"Everybody's heartbroken just because Trenten was such a nice guy," Eldridge said
"You'd see across the parking lot and he'd come talk to you
I was up at Homedale that night he got hurt
We're usually warming up during the bareback ride
and it's one of those deals it was heart-wrenching because most time I would go out of my way to say 'Hi' or something
and I saw him at a distance and I didn't get to talk to him that night
don't take that for granted.' If you see a friend or somebody you grew up with

AS the weather gets warmer and photos of European summers flood social media feeds
many Americans find themselves longing for a vacation overseas
However, with expensive airfare prices, it may seem impossible to make a European summer dream a reality
For those looking to experience the traditions and culture of Spain or France without traveling to Europe, a remote Nevada location may be the answer
The small town of Winnemucca is home to people of Basque heritage
which originates from Northern Spain and parts of France
The Basque region, comparable to the size of Rhode Island
straddles the border of the two European countries
It includes the seven provinces of, Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, and Navarra on the Spanish side; Laburdi, Zuberoa, and Behe-Nafarroa on the French side, according to the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada
is dying as only 25% of the population can speak it fluently
The Basque people began to immigrate to the US in 1850 during the California Gold Rush, according to Winnemucca's official website.
The Basques are the oldest surviving ethnic group in Europe, so historians have struggled to directly trace back their roots.
They are believed to have been descended from sheepherders, as Basque is suggested to be correlated with the term.
Basques later began to immigrate around the world, and many settled in Nevada due to the land opportunities, a director at the Center for Basque Studies told Smithsonian Magazine
the Basque culture remains alive and well in the small town of Winnemucca
Winnemucca boasts the region's highest Basque dining opportunities per capita
Meals are typically served family-style and incorporate traditional Basque ingredients
At The Martin Hotel
customers can order a variety of traditional dishes including the Solomo
which is a boneless pork loin simmered with fresh garlic and pimentos
having been built sometime between 1898 and 1908 by a man named Alfaonso Pasquale
The Basque ethnic group originates from a small region bordering Spain and France
although only 25% of the population can speak it fluently
Although their culture is similar to European regions
the Basques were isolated due to the proximity of the Pyrenees mountain range and therefore have distinctive traditions from the rest of Spain
Basque cuisine is unique and differs from French or Spanish food
Staples of the cuisine include pinxtos and Basque beans
Those of Basque heritage have immigrated around the world
It was then taken over in 1913 by a French couple and was later owned and managed by Basque families
According to the hotel's website
all dinners are served in the traditional Basque tradition with beans
Food aside, Basque culture is prominent throughout the Winnemucca area and is even celebrated every June with an annual festival
This year's festival took place a few weeks ago and included a parade
Winnemucca's location provides access to a plethora of activities and resources
For those looking to partake in outdoor activities
Winnemucca is conveniently located in the center of the Great Basin
Visitors can explore hot springs or hike one of the multiple scenic trails

(News 4 & Fox 11) — A years-long dispute over a piece of Native American land has now come to a head
forcing several residents out of their homes
This case involves the Winnemucca Indian Colony
It's located on the south end of Winnemucca
The history of the land dates back to President Woodrow Wilson
He issued an executive order in 1916 allowing federal railroad land to be used for the Winnemucca Indian Colony
It was meant for homeless Paiute and Shoshone Native Americans
some of the people living on the land have been intertwined in a legal fight to stay there
But it's been a complicated dispute that dates back to the late 1970's said the colony's attorney Norberto Cisneros
"Four years ago when they so-called served eviction papers
they zip tied them to my fence on the street," said Elena Loya
Loya lived in the house where her mother used to
generations of her family have been there almost a half-century
Her mother died in that house that I live in," she said
"I’ve got my daughter’s ashes spread there."
2022 is when the court challenges came to a head when the Winnemucca Indian Colony Tribal Court ordered that several residents could be evicted by the tribal council
The evicted residents say the tribal council has no authority -- that they voted themselves in -- and they won't follow their rules
Some residents even question whether the chairwoman
and other council members are Native American
"I'm full of hatred for that tribal council," said Jim Ayer who was evicted
Sure I might've threatened those guys
but what is the guy going to do when they show up with front end loaders and start taking your campers and your fence and all the tools out of your garage
They got a court order to take everything out of your yard
The Winnemucca Indian Colony's lawyer explained why certain residents can't live on the land:
"The people on the land right now or not members of the Winnemucca Indian Colony and cannot trace lineage back to the homeless 1916 Indians
who were a part of the 1916 base roll that we were talking about and in addition
many of them receive federal funds from other tribes," Cisneros said
Some residents who were evicted admit they get money from another tribe
The residents said they had a few days to move out their belongings
were arrested by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Humboldt County deputies
"I got wrestled down and they tased me two or three times," he said
"Winnemucca Indian Colony does not own that house
My grandma owns that house so she is the one who should authorize who can and cannot be there."
Some of the colony's elders who were evicted are now living in the Motel 6 in Winnemucca
Why would you kick someone out in the middle of winter especially in Winnemucca when it was snowing?" Missouri said
The colony has offered leases for some residents to stay on the land
"The lease had a bunch of stuff that I couldn’t even talk to certain residents
I didn't agree with it and they're like
you're going to have to move," said Lovelle Brown
bulldozed others saying they were unsanitary or unsafe
The colony said they also paid to have some mobile homes moved
"It’s not some heartless middle of November
This is a process that’s been going on for years and we have tried to work with them but the response always comes
no and you have no right to do what you’re doing," said Cisneros
"And they have people on them with no leases
Cisneros said if the people agreed to abide by the rules and laws set in place by the council
this case might have had a different outcome
