Minnesota and Wisconsin unite to sell crock pots and find connection along the Mississippi River
Driving south through downtown Hastings on Thursday morning
61 pointed to a place selling a bowling pin for a buck and an antique sewing machine for $100
It was opening day of the 100 Mile Garage Sale
held along the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides of the Mississippi River
The region’s biggest bargain-hunting weekend
has been going on for more than two decades
expanding on the original 85-mile garage sale of the 1990s
Shoppers come from as far away as Texas and Maine and have filled RVs with wares
the annual sale is as much about camaraderie as deal-hunting
Money saved on an instant pot can be later spent at a sale offering 10 kinds of homemade pie
including early birds pecking for deals while she and her friends were still setting up
Shoppers bought so much — even the ugly clay pots and creepy doll — that Judge started pulling more stuff out of the house
The group had also cracked four digits in revenue
was true: “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure.”
Michelle Liberty was in Judge’s “she shed,” perusing the barware and cigarette-rollers
Paul resident considers herself something of a garage-sale anthropologist
She likes peeking into others’ homes — she pointed out Judge’s couch
photos of Vikings players — and imagining their lives
“I just like looking at other people’s junk,” Liberty said
so it’s like: I got all the time,” he said
But they could be tempted to go off script
by a cute pair of pink-tasseled throw pillows
Locals know to avoid the 100-mile route over the weekend
when drivers’ necks are craning and brake lights are flashing
The sale signs come up fast at 60 miles per hour
from “cheese curds” to “fishing gear only.”
shoppers could find the sale by the scent of doughnuts her mom was frying up beside a cooler full of garden rhubarb
Wuollet and her sister said some customers return every year due to their well organized
“The biggest downfall is that we don’t get to do much garage sale shopping,” Wuollet lamented
“Maybe our husbands think that’s a benefit.”
The family had just seen a surprising repeater
they helped a woman scour their sale for her missing engagement ring
which she believed she’d lost somewhere along the route
“We searched everywhere for her and we couldn’t find it,” Wuollet said
“She came back this year and said she found it six months later in her dresser.”
Kristi Flynn smoked a cigarette beside her garage and joked about putting out a few umbrellas
(“They’d sell like hot cakes.”) A minute later
part of a multigenerational entourage pulled up: Two sisters were spending the next three days shopping with their adult daughters
They all wore matching hats with winged dragon pins, representing a fantasy-romance book series they’d read. Flynn asked about the plot, starting a conversation about flirtatious, warring dragon riders.
At garage sales up and down Flynn’s block, shoes and suitcases were getting soggy, but the life jackets were fine. A woman lifted up a tarp to peek at a giveaway pile and plucked out a toy for son. “Free entertainment,” she said. The same might apply to “garage sailing."
Here’s some financial advice: Don’t ever buy a new puzzle, because garage sales are awash in them. Same goes for croquet sets and panini makers. Secondhand china sets sell for practically the price of paper plates. But also, people try to wring money from used milk cartons, worn bras and empty pill bottles.
The 100-mile sale truly has it all. Motorcycle jackets, prom dresses and scented candles. A bonsai tree, snowblower and ice auger. Old yearbooks, a trumpet and fake decorative fruit. Kenny Rogers records, vintage Barbie dolls and Tonka trucks. Hand-crank drills and telephones. “Fargo” on VHS.
One 40-year garage seller is known for cleaning up and repairing old beer signs, then offloading the excess from his vast basement collection. “It kept him from going to the bar,” his wife joked of the hobby. They were also selling a trailer to haul one’s finds for $400.
Near Lake City, Ed and Janet Plein of Kasson Minn., have brought their mini-doughnut truck to the same frontage road every year for two decades, except for the times the sale was canceled for COVID and walloped by a freak snowstorm. When the property the Pleins park in front of changed hands, they told the buyers they came with the house.
Ed said he didn’t think the size of the crowds changes in relation to economic conditions, as shoppers always delight in a score. “Garage sales are typically people out looking for the Willy Wonka golden-ticket-type thing,” he said.
Even if you don’t buy anything along the 100 miles of sales — how?!? — the drive alone is worth the trip. The Mississippi runs languidly and almost lake-like in these parts, cradled between the towering bluffs. At this time of year, neon-green buds pop out from gray branches. And the spooky sloughs are full of dead trees and mud.
The view from Wisconsin’s Hwy. 35 feels like the fraternal twin of 61. The garage sales on this side aren’t notably different, except for the abundance of Green Bay Packers apparel. Among the stops worth a mention are the adorable “Bread Hut,” filled with sourdough loaves sold on the honor system, just across the Winona Bridge, north of Trempealeau, Wis. And, in Alma, the American Legion hall has a grandpa’s basement vibe and sells golf balls by the egg carton.
Somewhere between Pepin and Prescott, after you’ve seen your 29th croquet set and considered buckling a human-size, blow-up Corona bottle into your passenger seat, you’ll know it’s time to quit garage sailing.
On Thursday, the final straw was the sight of two throw pillows: The same set Michelle Liberty purchased 8 hours earlier, at the very first sale. But at this one, they were a dollar cheaper.

founder and head baker at Castlerock Sourdough in Fountain City
talks about her successful baking business on Wednesday April 30
In a bakery attached to her Fountain City home
Britta Blain stands in an apron covered with flour where she bakes two or three days a week from May through October with her youngest of seven children
While they have been creating goods together since McColl was a toddler
they certainly have stepped up their game since then
their bakery is filled with carts of beautiful sourdough bread and container after container of dough to be made
During Blain's open season at her business Castlerock Sourdough
with the occasional help of her other children
create 450 to 500 loaves of aromatic sourdough bread each week that are decorated with designs that awe customers
It's not just the designs that please customers
stand in front of their home bakery on Wednesday in Fountain City
who has 40 years of breadmaking experience
runs the bakery mostly with her daughter and the help of friends and family
who considers Winona her hometown after moving there from Pennsylvania at age 12
has spent four decades making bread for family and friends
because of past experience in Europe that got her interested in high-quality bread
Over 20 of those years have gone to making sourdough
as Blain recognized it as a healthier option to feed her children
Blain started selling her bread eight years ago
after facing a transition point in life and needing a new job
She only sold three loaves in her first year from her porch
even though she practiced frequently by making five loaves every week
after participating in some farmers markets
She named it after a nearby rock and the old name of the Fountain City farm she now calls home
score the bread with intricate designs before it goes into the oven Wednesday in Fountain City
and produces up to 250 loaves per baking day
She now works six-day weeks from May through October
She occasionally bakes during the off-season
while two days a week she often works 16 to 18 hours
One loaf of bread requires a three-day process -- the most challenging part is a focus on the dough's temperature
The designs are carved into the top of each loaf to help let out steam
The Castlerock Sourdough bread hut sits at the bottom of the family farm's driveway
Bread is stocked into the cabinets about three times per week during open season and payments are collected in a secure lock box or through payment apps

Blain loves working with her now 22-year-old daughter
who first became interested after going to a farmers market with her
"I feel like I'm one of the luckiest moms on the planet," Blain said

Signature designs are carved onto Castlerock Sourdough loaves
People can check the business' posts on Facebook to stay up to date on availability
“I enjoy the quality and freshness of Castlerock Bread,” said Jennifer Schewe
who noted it is sold at “very reasonable” prices
It’s one of the best breads I’ve had,” said Madison-area resident Laura Vanderkooy
who stops by when she visits family nearby
“With everything having so much preservatives in it
Britta Blain and Fiona McColl tend to the baking bread on Wednesday in Fountain City
Castlerock Sourdough bread is also sold at the Winona Farmers Market and nearby Bluff Country Co-op
Sydney Curtis loves the traditional nature of the bread
"Britta's bread is the perfect thing to bring
It really puts the finishing touch on my camp
"I love to have it with my stews for dinner
or to eat as toast with my bacon and eggs over the fire for breakfast
It's also conveniently close to where I live in Fountain City
so I can usually manage to get some as I leave for an encampment.”
The bread is available at other stores such as Bluff Country Co-op in Winona and is served at Monarch Public House in Fountain City
probably the quickest of all the local breads.”
bake at their home bakery in Fountain City
While the bread hasn't yet returned to co-op shelves for this season
Strain received a call Thursday from someone asking when it would be available again
and it’s gorgeous aesthetically," Strain said
"We're really happy that they make us part of their route.”
The co-op receives about two dozen loaves with every delivery
which take place about two to three times a week in season
The bread is often mostly gone within a couple days
Area residents can also pick up a loaf at the Winona Farmers Market almost every Saturday in season
Britta Blain tends a batch of dough at her home bakery
The large batches of dough are left to rise in a cool room and covered in ice packs to prevent the rise in temperature caused by fermentation
Blain enjoys connecting with people at the market
That and the other positives make the long days worthwhile
just to get to meet all the people and getting to work with my little Fiona," Blain said
Schewe especially enjoys the bakery’s Wednesday evening events from 5 to 7 p.m.
when hot-from-the-oven bread is available for people to buy and enjoy
"I love their 'hot out of the oven Wednesdays' when they open their yard for guests to bring a blanket (or chairs) and a snack to eat
a drink along with their hot bread and just sit and relax," Schewe said
They encourage people to relax and just enjoy their bread and each other
There is a picnic table next to the bread hut because they welcome anyone to sit and enjoy watching the goats
customers are invited to picnic on the property
live music and birds from River Valley Raptors
“The Castlerock family has worked hard to create a trustworthy
healthy bread and continues to value their customers by striving to create new products to satisfy their customers wants,” Schewe said
“What impressed me the most about Castlerock Bread is everyone who is a part of it strives to make everyone feel like family to them.”
My family and I always feel welcome,” Schewe said
Blain doesn't keep her know-how to herself
She teaches sourdough classes and sells kits with starter
Blain teaches a variety of classes that people can sign up for on the bakery's website
Some classes are designed for those looking to start their own bakeries
She hopes the classes will help participants save money and avoid potential mistakes
certain things you're never gonna learn," she said
“There's such a demand for sourdough that I think we need a lot more sourdough bakers than we have," Blain said
Blain wants to see more bakeries like hers in the area
“I want to help other people be able to start this because it’d be nice to have a lot of little neighborhood bakeries," she said
She believes some of the keys to a good sourdough bread are having a good starter and using the best quality ingredients
Blain's also working to improve her bakery
like by adding a new mill to create some of her own ingredients
She said it will help keep the ingredients' nutrients and has health benefits
Blain works to keep up with new trends and is working to complete a two-year diploma
Blain plans to continue working into her 80s if able
McColl has thought about whether she will take over the bakery one day
“I think my main goal is just to support it as long as I can," she said
Blain believes McColl would be a good choice to someday own the bakery
"I'd say Fiona is the most qualified and most experienced to take over," Blain said
“I want her to be able to have her own life and have a career," Blain said
McColl attends Winona State University and hopes to one day follow in her mother's footsteps in a different way — by becoming an English teacher

The Washington Senate has passed a bill to try and stop habitual speeders in their tracks
A teenager who admitted being "addicted to speed" behind the wheel had totaled two other cars in the year before he slammed into a minivan at 112 mph in a Seattle suburb
killing the driver and three of the five children she was transporting for a homeschool co-op
After sentencing Chase Daniel Jones last month to more than 17 years in prison
the judge tacked on a novel condition should he drive again: His vehicle must be equipped with a device that prevents accelerating far beyond the speed limit
Chase Daniel Jones cries as attorney Brad Barshis gets up to read a letter Jones wrote to the families of his victims at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent
Virginia this year became the first state to give its judges such a tool to deal with the most dangerous drivers on the road
already is using it and similar measures await governors' signatures in Washington state and Georgia
New York and California also could soon tap the GPS-based technology to help combat a recent national spike in traffic deaths
"It's a horror no one should have to experience," said Amy Cohen
who founded the victims' advocacy group Families for Safe Streets after her 12-year-old son
was killed by a speeding driver in front of their New York home more than a decade ago
the minivan driver who was killed when Jones ran a red light
was building a backyard greenhouse with her husband to help educate several kids who shuttle between homes during the school day
Also killed in the March 2024 crash near Hudson's home in Renton
were Boyd "Buster" Brown and Eloise Wilcoxson
Hudson's two children were sitting on the passenger side and survived
"You always hear of these horrific accidents
comforts Rivka Wilcoxson after Wilcoxson spoke about her family's loss during Chase Daniel Jones' sentencing on April 25 at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent
who reached out to offer condolences and tell him she was sponsoring legislation to mandate intelligent speed assistance devices as a condition for habitual speeders to get back their suspended licenses
Leavitt predicts it will have an even more powerful impact than revoking driving privileges
citing studies showing around three-quarters of people who lose their licenses get behind a wheel anyway
the state saw a 200% increase in drivers cited for going at least 50 mph over the speed limit
according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission
"I guess I don't understand why someone is compelled to want to drive that fast," Leavitt said
"But if they choose to drive that fast with the speed limiter
which Washington legislators passed last month and Democratic Gov
using the first letters of the names of the four victims: Buster
didn't receive a speeding ticket in his two previous crashes
he likely wouldn't have been required to use the speed-limiter ahead of the fatal one
And because it could be 2029 before the law takes effect
the judge's requirement at sentencing only applies to his time on probation after being released from prison
Competing tech companies that joined forces to lobby for ignition interlock requirements for drunken drivers have been working in unison again the last few years to pitch intelligent speed assistance
chief government affairs officer at one manufacturer
said fleet vehicles including school buses in the nation's capital have been trying it out for years
But it took a lot of refinement before the GPS technology could instantly recognize speed limit changes and compel vehicles with the devices installed to adjust accordingly
"We've got a lot more satellites in the sky now," said Ken Denton
a retired police officer who is the chief compliance officer at Cincinnati-based LifeSafer
for a vigil honoring the four people killed in a car crash
the devices would prevent cars from exceeding speed limits or whatever threshold regulators set
An override button allows speeding in emergencies
but states can decide whether to activate it and authorities would be alerted any time the button is pushed
which beeps to alert drivers when they are going too fast
is required for new cars in the European Union
Gavin Newsom vetoed a similar proposal last year
explaining vehicle safety requirements are set by the federal government and he was concerned a patchwork of state laws could stir confusion
near where a speeding motorist crashed into a minivan
killing four people and seriously injuring two
Patrick Hope agreed to sponsor the proposal in the Virginia Legislature
which was calibrated to not go more than 9 mph over the speed limit
"That was my first question: Is it safe?" Hope said
Not only did he come away convinced it was safe
Hope is now pondering whether to install it on the cars of his three children
the price could be hefty: $4 per day and a $100 installation fee
The fee would be reduced for low-income offenders
which provides support services to the loved ones of crash victims

it's no secret that coffee is the drink of choice for many starting their day
From the importance of sourcing high quality green beans
We take an inside look into the coffee roasting process
Reneé Colón stands on a stepladder in the rented corner of a warehouse
pouring Brazilian coffee beans into her groaning old roasting machine
The beans are precious because they survived severe drought in a year when environmental conditions depressed coffee production globally
doubling the price of raw beans in just months
coffee is going to become more scarce," said Colón
founder and roaster at Fuego Coffee Roasters
"Seeing that dramatic loss of the Brazilian crop is a perfect example."
Losses from heat and drought have cut production forecasts in Brazil and Vietnam
Global production is still expected to increase
but not as much as commodity market investors had expected
largely because of continued high demand in Europe
Prices peaked in February but have remained high
forcing roasters like Colón to weigh how much of that cost to absorb and how much to pass on to consumers
The beans Colón was roasting cost her $5.50 per pound in early March
more than double what they cost in September
Specialty coffees — grown in delicate climates to slow growth and add flavor — can cost even more
President Donald Trump's current 10% tariffs cover most coffee-producing countries
and are expected to drive up costs for Americans
Amid his chaotic tariff pronouncements — at one point he threatened 46% tariffs on Vietnam imports and 32% on Indonesia imports before pausing them — American coffee roasters are rethinking their supply chains
"With all these changes in coffee maybe we should open our own damn farm," Colón muses
Coffee beans fall into the cooling tray of a roasting machine at Fuego Coffee Roasters' roasting facility
The world's best coffee thrives near the equator
where slow growing allows beans to gather flavor
either — labor costs are too high and she worries about the increasing risk of crop-damaging hurricanes
She shrugs off buying coffee from Hawaii and California
global coffee green exports were down 14.2% from a year earlier
according to the International Coffee Organization's market report
The shortage led to the highest price ever for raw coffee in February
breaking the record set in 1977 when severe frost wiped out 70% of Brazil's coffee plants
Climate isn't the only thing driving up prices
a buyer for San Francisco-based Ritual Coffee Roasters
She described being in Mexico in April seeking to finalize contracts between Trump's fits and starts on tariffs
It reminded her of being in Colombia a month earlier as Trump threatened and then backed away from tariffs that would have affected coffee prices
because at the end of the day it didn't exist," Whalen said
Some of the recent rise in coffee prices may be from importers buying extra in anticipation of the tariffs
Colón believes prices will go still higher as import taxes begin being paid
And with consumer confidence hitting a 12-year low
Colón could see a decrease in demand for her premium coffee
"It is tough on our end because it drives the price up
tough on the consumer end because they have to pay more and tough on the farmers' end because they may be experiencing really significant losses," Colón said
make coffee at Fuego Coffee Roasters in Rochester
she and her husband took out a $50,000 loan to buy a custom coffee roaster from Turkey that will triple capacity
They're trying to increase sales by adding new wholesale clients like coffee shops
and selling directly to homes via a beans-of-the-month-style subscription service
The Colóns have raised the wholesale price on a pound of roasted beans by 25 cents
They're considering doing the same for pour-overs and espresso drinks at their two retail locations
one couple said they don't look at the coffee's price on the receipt
"We know we could go find coffee cheaper somewhere else," said Rob Newell
as he held a cooing infant daughter alongside his wife
"Maybe it's just because we're new parents
cabin fever staying in the house all day."
The warehouse where she roasts has some extra space
so she's weighing stacking up more bags of raw beans there to save as much as $500 on monthly storage costs in port cities
She's tried to cultivate relationships with farmers to minimize price spikes and control bean quality
She described working with a farmer in Colombia as coffee prices were spiking in February to lock in a one-year contract that avoided the worst of the increase
she's had to get used to the complexity of tariffs
she turned down a pitch from a Montreal coffee importer who suggested the U.S
dollar's strength in Canada would allow her to save money by importing through their warehouse
She feared that tariffs on Canada could increase prices
the coffee would have to cross an extra border
And the value of the dollar has been up and down
"I want things to be less complicated instead of more," she said

Police in Brazil said on Sunday that two people have been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to detonate explosives at a free Lady Gaga concert in Rio de Janeiro
RIO DE JANEIRO — Police in Brazil said on Sunday that two people have been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to detonate explosives at a free Lady Gaga concert in Rio de Janeiro
The Rio event on Saturday was the biggest show of the pop star's career that attracted an estimated 2.5 million fans to Copacabana Beach and had crowds screaming and dancing along
said authorities believed the suspects sought to target Brazil's LGBTQ community
"They were clearly saying that they were planning an attack at Lady Gaga's concert motivated by sexual orientation," Cury told a press conference on Sunday

Rio Police chief Luiz Lima said the group disseminated hate speech and violent content online "aimed at gaining notoriety in order to attract more viewers
more participants — most of them teenagers
Even as Brazilian authorities said they arrested suspects in the hours before Lady Gaga's show
the event went ahead without disruption — leading some to question the seriousness of the threat
Serious security concerns typically lead organizers to cancel such massive events — as happened with Taylor Swift's concerts in Vienna last year
Police said said nothing about the alleged plot at the time to in an effort to "avoid panic" and "the distortion of information."
A spokesperson for Lady Gaga said the pop star and her team "learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning
nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks."
The statement added: "Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place."
with 5,200 military and police officers deployed to the beach where fans were reveling in the pop singer's classic hits like "Born This Way," which became something of an LGBTQ anthem after its 2011 release

Authorities arrested two people in connection with the alleged plot — a man described as the group's leader in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul on illegal weapons possession charges
and a teenager in Rio on child pornography charges
Police did not elaborate on their exact roles in the plot or on how the group came to target Lady Gaga's free concert
"Those involved were recruiting participants
to carry out integrated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails," police said
The Justice Ministry said that it determined the group posed a "risk to public order." It said the group falsely presented themselves online as "Little Monsters" — Lady Gaga's nickname for her fans — in order to lure teeangers into "networks with violent and self-destructive content."
During a series of raids on the homes of 15 suspects across several Brazilian states
authorities confiscated phones and other electronic devices
Although police said they believed homemade bombs were intended for use in the planned attack
there was no mention of the raids turning up any weapons or explosive material
Cury said one of the suspects whose home was raided in the city of Macaé
"had a religious motivation" and "claimed the singer (Lady Gaga) was a Satanist."
Lady Gaga has expressed gratitude for the enormous crowd in an Instagram post that said nothing of the alleged plot
"Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night's show — the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil," she wrote
"The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away
I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you."

NEW YORK — President Donald Trump is opening a new salvo in his tariff war
Trade Representative to slap a 100% tariff "on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands."
"The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death," he wrote
complaining that other countries "are offering all sorts of incentives to draw" filmmakers and studios away from the U.S
"This is a concerted effort by other Nations and
President Donald Trump speaks with reporters after disembarking Marine One upon arrival on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington
It wasn't immediately clear how any such tariff on international productions could be implemented
It's common for both large and small films to include production in the U.S
Big-budget movies like the upcoming "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning," for instance
Incentive programs for years have influenced where movies are shot
increasingly driving film production out of California and to other states and countries with favorable tax incentives
Yet Trump's tariffs are designed to lead consumers toward American products
American-produced movies overwhelming dominate the domestic marketplace
China has ramped up its domestic movie production
culminating in the animated blockbuster "Ne Zha 2" grossing more than $2 billion this year
its sales came almost entirely from mainland China
where successive governments have offered rebates and incentives in recent years to draw Hollywood films to the country
the film industry has generated billions of dollars in tourism revenue driven by the "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" films
which featured the country's pristine and scenic vistas
the blockbuster "Minecraft" movie was filmed entirely in New Zealand
productions in 2023 delivered $1.3 billion New Zealand dollars ($777 million) to the country in return for NZ$200 million in subsidies
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said he was awaiting more details of Trump's measures before commenting on them but would continue to pitch to filmmakers abroad
"We've got an absolutely world class industry," he said
didn't immediately respond to messages Sunday evening
The MPA's data shows how much Hollywood exports have dominated cinemas
the American movies produced $22.6 billion in exports and $15.3 billion in trade surplus in 2023
has made good on the "tariff man" label he gave himself years ago
slapping new taxes on goods made in countries around the globe
That includes a 145% tariff on Chinese goods and a 10% baseline tariff on goods from other countries
Trump has exerted extraordinary influence over the flow of commerce
creating political risks and pulling the market in different directions
set to be subject to new tariffs in the weeks ahead
Trump has long voiced concern about movie production moving overseas
he announced that he had tapped actors Mel Gibson
Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone to serve as "special ambassadors" to Hollywood to bring it "BACK — BIGGER
film and television production has been hampered in recent years
the Hollywood guild strikes of 2023 and the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area
which asked about preferred filming locations
Central Europe and Australia came out on top
The problem is especially acute in California
production last year was down 5.6% from 2023 according to FilmLA
during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic
proposed expanding California's Film & Television Tax Credit program to $750 million annually
Chicago and San Francisco have also used aggressive tax incentives to lure film and TV productions
Those programs can take the form of cash grants
"Other nations have been stealing the movie-making capabilities from the United States," Trump told reporters at the White House on Sunday night after returning from a weekend in Florida
"If they're not willing to make a movie inside the United States we should have a tariff on movies that come in."

Not many animals have shown an ability to identify and move to a beat -- with humans

Ronan the sea lion can still keep a beat after all these years
But the 15-year-old California sea lion's talent shines most in bobbing to disco hits like “Boogie Wonderland.”

Not many animals show a clear ability to identify and move to a beat aside from humans
a bright-eyed sea lion that has scientists rethinking the meaning of music
she burst to fame around a decade ago after scientists reported her musical skills
she has been a resident at the University of California
where researchers including Cook have tested and honed her ability to recognize rhythms
Ronan joined a select group of animal movers and shakers — which also includes Snowball the famed dancing cockatoo — that together upended the long-held idea that the ability to respond to music and recognize a beat was distinctly human
What is particularly notable about Ronan is that she can learn to dance to a beat without learning to sing or talk musically
“Scientists once believed that only animals who were vocal learners — like humans and parrots — could learn to find a beat,” said Hugo Merchant
a researcher at Mexico’s Institute of Neurobiology
who was not involved in the Ronan research
But in the years since since Ronan came into the spotlight
questions emerged about whether she still had it
Was Ronan better than people at keeping a beat
published Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports
This time the researchers focused not on studio music but on percussion beats in a laboratory
They filmed Ronan bobbing her head as the drummer played three tempos: 112
Two of those beats Ronan had never been exposed to
allowing scientists to test her flexibility in recognizing new rhythms
And the researchers asked 10 college students to do the same
“No human was better than Ronan at all the different ways we test quality of beat-keeping,” said Cook
adding that "she's much better than when she was a kid,” indicating lifetime learning
The new study confirms Ronan's place as one of the “top ambassadors” of animal musicality
said University of Amsterdam music cognition researcher Henkjan Honing
Researchers plan to train and test other sea lions
Cook suspects other sea lions can also bob to a beat — but that Ronan will still stand out as a star performer

Bruce Mackenzie walks down a path on the side of Fifty Road in Winona
He said the lack of pedestrian infrastructure is common in the community
Bruce Mackenzie has been trying to get better pedestrian infrastructure in Winona since 2017
Hamilton Ward 10 councillor Jeff Beattie said the sidewalk issues on Fifty Road in Winona is one of the reasons he ran for office in 2022
Tim Nolan is a longtime Hamilton accessibility advocate and the founder of the Accessibility Hamilton Alliance
He said the City of Hamilton is lacking when it comes to sidewalk connectivity
Walking on Fifty Road toward the Winona Crossing Shopping Centre
Bruce Mackenzie takes a narrow well-worn dirt path on the side of the road
Mackenzie said pedestrians and cyclists used to be able to easily move off to the side of the road when vehicles passed
but new curbs have made that more difficult — and made the road “more dangerous.”
with no consideration of pedestrians or bicyclists.”
While there is a sidewalk from the shopping centre south to the CN rail line
he said the situation is “ghastly” in the winter due to snowbanks that force pedestrians onto the road
The retired Hamilton Conservation Authority manager has been banging the drum for better sidewalk infrastructure in the community since 2017 — and says the concerns are worse now than when he began his campaign as there is now more development and traffic
The lack of sidewalks and pedestrian infrastructure in the Winona area is something Jeff Beattie knows all too well
the Ward 10 councillor said the dicey pedestrian situation on Fifty Road was one of the reasons he decided to run for office
Beattie said it is “about the worst situation you can think of,” as the Fifty Road is a truck route
Queen Elizabeth Way access road and escarpment access road
very difficult because people have to walk in live-lane traffic,” he said
But Beattie has been working on the issue for more than two years and said some changes are coming
a sidewalk is expected to be installed later this year on the west side of Fifty Road from Sonoma Lane — where sidewalks exist — to the rail line
He added staff are working with the rail company to “pedestrianize” the crossing
While sidewalks are planned to continue to Barton Street
Beattie said it is more difficult — and longer term — in that area because the road is still a “rural cross-section” with ditches and shoulders
But Winona is far from the only area of the City of Hamilton to have the issue
the founder of the Accessibility Hamilton Alliance
said the issue of sidewalk connectivity doesn’t seem to be addressed by the city “very well — if at all.”
He said policy decisions at city hall show pedestrians don’t get the same treatment as others
“How would vehicle owners feel if every time they drove down the road it came to a dead-end?” he said
While able-bodied pedestrians may be able to step off a curb and walk on the road when a sidewalk ends
Nolan said those who use wheelchairs or mobility devices — or those who are blind like him — don’t have that luxury
He noted it is both an accessibility and equity issue
as it doesn’t allow people with accessibility challenges to get to the same places as others
“Why is it we can get away with treating pedestrians differently — especially when the vast majority of people with disabilities can’t be anything but pedestrians?”
But Hamilton isn’t the only municipality dealing with the issue
executive director of the Clean Air Partnership
an environmental charity that advances active transportation
She said pedestrian and cycling connectivity issues are common in areas of new development and urban sprawl across the province
Kalapos said it should “definitely be part of the planning” at the municipal level for those connections
as developers are generally only responsible for that infrastructure within the development itself
She noted planning often gives priority to vehicles
something that can create “inhospitable” environments for pedestrians — and can create congestion
“If you don’t build spaces for people to walk
then you can’t expect them to walk,” she said
“Sidewalks or spaces for people to walk or cycle should be a part of every road design.”
One of the concerns Mackenzie raised in a letter to the city seven years ago was a lack of pedestrian or cyclist access over the QEW — specifically at Fifty Road and Winona Road
While there are sidewalks on the bridge deck of the overpasses
Mackenzie said the situation is due to a “planning failure” as there has been 25 years of housing and commercial development and “not one iota” of consideration for nonautomobile traffic
Beattie said the situation around the overpasses is complicated because they are the purview of the Ministry of Transportation
But he said plans are in the works to create connections
He hopes to connect the “broken network” of sidewalks to a continuous sidewalk directly across the Winona Road overpass in the next two years
because the interchange is going to be completely redone
He noted there is no firm timeline for that project
but said the situation is “light-years ahead” of what it was in 2022
Beattie said he hopes to have the municipality plan to provide
temporary connections between new developments
“Nothing irritates me more than sidewalks that start nowhere and end nowhere and inadvertently might force pedestrians out into live-lane traffic,” he said
