A UNC School of the Arts Foundation affiliate has paid $5.4 million for the 411 W
building adjacent to the Stevens Center in downtown Winston-Salem
according to a Forsyth County Register of Deeds filing
The buyer is UNCSA Foundation Management LLC
UNCSA officials could not be immediately reached for comment about its potential use of the building
The building contains 12,441 square feet with Bitty and Beau’s Coffee among its tenants
It is known for being the former Greater Winston-Salem headquarters space
UNCSA owns the 77,500-square-foot Stevens performing arts center
The purchase comes following the March 17 filing of N.C. House Bill 419
which would provide $4.5 million in state funding to the UNC System Board of Trustees on behalf of UNCSA
The funding would be made available July 1 if the bill becomes law
if supported by House Republican leadership
is likely to be inserted into the state 2025-26 budget bill
“It makes sense for the state to acquire this property for additional revenue
parking and to build a loading dock onto the Stevens Center,” Hall said
The 1,366-seat Stevens Center opened in 1929
The neoclassical building was restored and reopened in 1983 with a redesigned stage and backstage that was able to house Broadway-scale live performances of music
The facility is about 1½ years into a projected three-year renovation project
Phase 1 involves renovating the lobby and “critical repairs” to the exterior of the building to address water intrusion and ensure it is watertight
The renovated lobby being done in Phase 1 will feature a more “fluid entry for audiences and visitors
as well as increase accessibility and amenities
such as renovated restrooms and updated concession spaces
Among the repairs: replacing the roof; restoring the brick exterior
terra-cotta façade and window; improvements to back-of-house spaces
including the dressing rooms and green room
Construction for Phase 2 is projected to begin in the fall
Phase 2 will mostly involve interior renovations
such as a “comprehensive transformation of the audience chamber
including enhancements to seating and the stage
as well as a reconfigured balcony with improved sightlines.”
The overall capital investment has not been disclosed by UNCSA
It sought and received $80.8 million in funding from the General Assembly through the state budget
The remainder of the funding is coming from private funding for the renovation
as well as providing long-term support for programming and building maintenance
Then-UNCSA Chancellor Lindsay Bierman said in September 2017 that the plan provided a detailed analysis of existing conditions
reflected the “must-haves” of most campus and community stakeholders
and outlined realistic cost estimates to bring the Stevens Center up to current industry standards and building codes
Lambeth said the Stevens Center “has served our community well and is a shining example of our commitment to the arts and educational programs
it is in need of repairs and updating,” Lambeth said

When you win a conference track championship by .5 points
that’s a good indication it was a total team effort
The Winston-Salem State women’s track team won the CIAA championship on Saturday night and Coach Antonio Wells was more than happy to talk team instead of individuals
“Everybody just had to come across the line or complete their throws or jumps to the best of their ability and they all did that,” Wells said about winning the conference championship by the slimmest of margins over Fayetteville State
Antonio Wells was named the CIAA coach of the year for women's track
The championships were held in Durham over the weekend
and the Rams scored 136.5 points with Fayetteville State second with 136 points
Claflin was third with 120.5 points and Virginia State was fourth with 57.5
it was his second outdoor championship following up the Rams’ win in 2022
Wells was also named the CIAA coach of the year and Charnessa Reid was named the women’s track athlete of the year
Reid, who is a Mount Tabor graduate, was third in the long jump and won the 100-meter hurdles
Charnessa Reid was third in the long jump at the CIAA championships and won the 100-meter hurdles
Elicia Bryant won the 1,500 meters and Brianna Benloss won the 100- and 200-meter races
Bryant wound up scoring 23 points for the Rams and was the MVP of the meet as she also got second place in the 800 meters and a fourth in the 3,000 meters
It was the 3,000 meters where Jaiyah Nelson placed eighth to get the Rams a valuable point
Wells said that was the difference in the Rams beating the Broncos by the half point
Coach Antonio Wells of WSSU won his second CIAA outdoor track title on Saturday
“We didn’t tell her that she needed to finish eighth
but she knew it got us a point by finishing eighth,” Wells said
“That was pretty impressive that she worked hard to get to that eighth position.”
Asheika Smith of the Rams was second in the 400 meters and teammate Simone Kelly was fifth with Daijion Lee sixth and Olivia Cosby in seventh
They all picked up valuable points for the Rams in that final
Wells said before they headed back to campus on Saturday night several parents had set up a tailgate and the team was fed
and then we came back to campus,” Wells said
we didn’t do much celebrating but I’m so proud of how the entire team really performed.”
The WSSU women's track team won the CIAA title on Saturday in Durham
They will go through exams this week and a few of the athletes will graduate on Friday
“We will have a last chance meet where some of them can try and get qualifying times for the NCAA’s,” Wells said
“And we have several athletes that have times and marks already
It was a great way to end our season as a team winning the CIAA.”

NEW YORK — President Donald Trump opened a new salvo in his tariff war
Trump said he authorized the Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S
Trade Representative to slap a 100% tariff "on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands."
"The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death," he wrote
complaining that other countries "are offering all sorts of incentives to draw" filmmakers and studios away from the U.S
"This is a concerted effort by other Nations and
President Donald Trump speaks with reporters after disembarking Marine One upon arrival on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington
It wasn't immediately clear how any such tariff on international productions could be implemented
It's common for both large and small films to include production in the U.S
Big-budget movies like the upcoming "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning," for instance
Incentive programs for years have influenced where movies are shot
increasingly driving film production out of California and to other states and countries with favorable tax incentives
Yet Trump's tariffs are designed to lead consumers toward American products
American-produced movies overwhelming dominate the domestic marketplace
China has ramped up its domestic movie production
culminating in the animated blockbuster "Ne Zha 2" grossing more than $2 billion this year
its sales came almost entirely from mainland China
where successive governments have offered rebates and incentives in recent years to draw Hollywood films to the country
the film industry has generated billions of dollars in tourism revenue driven by the "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" films
which featured the country's pristine and scenic vistas
the blockbuster "Minecraft" movie was filmed entirely in New Zealand
productions in 2023 delivered $1.3 billion New Zealand dollars ($777 million) to the country in return for NZ$200 million in subsidies
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said he was awaiting more details of Trump's measures before commenting on them but would continue to pitch to filmmakers abroad
"We've got an absolutely world class industry," he said

That includes a 145% tariff on Chinese goods and a 10% baseline tariff on goods from other countries
Trump has exerted extraordinary influence over the flow of commerce
creating political risks and pulling the market in different directions
set to be subject to new tariffs in the weeks ahead
Trump has long voiced concern about movie production moving overseas
he announced that he had tapped actors Mel Gibson
Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone to serve as "special ambassadors" to Hollywood to bring it "BACK — BIGGER
film and television production has been hampered in recent years
the Hollywood guild strikes of 2023 and the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area
which asked about preferred filming locations
Central Europe and Australia came out on top
The problem is especially acute in California

Chicago and San Francisco have also used aggressive tax incentives to lure film and TV productions
Those programs can take the form of cash grants
"Other nations have been stealing the movie-making capabilities from the United States," Trump told reporters at the White House on Sunday night after returning from a weekend in Florida

President Donald Trump speaks Wednesday during a Cabinet meeting at the White House as Secretary of State Marco Rubio
and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth look on
Many people may believe something that is false
but the possibility of truth will still exist and wait to be discovered
One can imagine President Trump saying that parachutes are a woke
That he does not believe in parachutes and neither should you
He may even sign an executive order banning parachutes from airplanes
The last remnants of the free press will question whether fewer people would have died if those planes had parachutes in them
The Pew Research Center may even do an opinion poll to see what percentage of Americans believe that parachutes save lives
President Trump will respond that the bodies found in the wreckage may be dead
but their spirits live on so no one really died in any of the crashes
A large portion of his followers will agree with him — even those whose loved ones died in plane crashes will say they agree that planes are better off without all those parachutes weighing them down
Some of you will be able to tell that the above is satire
Others will argue that I’m describing an extreme example
Many Americans already toe whatever line comes out of his mouth
The parachute example is a difference in degree — not in kind
It starts with wind turbines and immigrants
Martin Niemoeller was a German pastor who initially supported Adolf Hitler
As Hitler insisted on the supremacy of the state over faith
He was arrested in 1937 and confined at Dachau until the end of the war

and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist
and I did not speak out— because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me
and many saw what that meant for their families and friends and our economy and stood with immigrants
and many saw what that meant for them and their families — basic services
diplomacy and research — and they resisted
the LGBTQ+ community and those with disabilities
and it touched mostly every family in America and they could not remain silent
Then they tried to suppress my rights — and my friends and neighbors were already organized to stand by me
"That's Biden." Donald Trump is so good at deflecting and assigning blame if it suits him
He is now blaming Joe Biden for the slump in GDP
That's not Trump." Even though Trump is responsible for all but 20 days of this last GDP report
(I guess he thinks the tariff wars against every other country in the world had no effect on it.)
He also blamed Biden for the freefall in the stock market: "This is Biden's stock market
he proclaimed that the "Trump stock market" was booming because of his poll numbers.)
he shifted again: "I'm not taking credit or discredit for the stock market
I'm just saying we inherited a mess." And his response about the Chinese tariffs hurting American consumers: "Well
maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls
and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more."

said he wished the Trump administration could have come to some other kind of agreement rather than being “hasty” about its tariff policies
“The shoes that I bought today I could’ve got two years ago for 49 dollars,” Hamilton said
who said he is a father of a 15-year-old highschooler
also expressed he was worried about the effect of tariffs on costs for schools
Hamilton said he is worried that it would be more expensive for his daughter
shoes and take-out lunch on a regular basis
that’s going to make it hard on the school system,” Hamilton said
But other shoppers said they have faith in Trump’s strategy
A longtime Winston-Salem resident named Marie
said that Trump is “just trying to make up for all the things Biden did wrong.”
“It was bad before Trump got in,” she said
I believe I have to trust him to do what he says he’s going to do.”
said Trump is just trying to “correct the ship.”
“I’m hoping it will bring industry back to the U.S.,” Smith said
Smith added that he believes the “big push” to send everyone to college isn’t right and that not everyone should go to college
“There are other countries where if you don’t have the aptitude to get into college you don’t go,” Smith said
Several other shoppers who wished not to be named declined to comment and expressed general feelings of ambivalence about the tariff policies
Most shoppers shared that whatever their opinion on tariffs was
Over at the Harris Teeter in Cloverdale Plaza
grocery shoppers were also split on tariffs
“I personally don’t know anyone who is supportive of them,” said Sheryl Jordan
who said she disagreed with tariff policies because she believed they were driven by Trump’s “self-interest”
said the tariffs didn’t have anything to do with people who live and work in America
“I’ve seen businesses warning folks,” Jordan said
“I wasn’t aware of shipping price increases,” said M.J
Plitt when asked about e-commerce price hikes
said he was generally supportive of the tariffs because it was something that he believes could bring businesses back to the U.S
“In my lifetime we’ve seen essentially the majority of manufacturing move overseas,” Curling said
are a necessary evil to bring back some of the manufacturing back to the United States.”
said she has seen price increases on Amazon and heard that toys may be harder to find this year during the upcoming holiday season
Despite her feeling that the tariffs would be a “good thing in the long run,” Hayek said she has seen other general price increases
When asked about the ideal benefit of the tariff policies
Smith and Hayek both said they want to see the return of American industry
But none of the price increases made Hayek feel the need to order things early
“Kids are just too unpredictable,” Hayek said
Curling said he is "generally supportive" of the p…
Our weekly round-up of letters published in the Winston-Salem Journal
Regarding the story “Loss of FEMA grants leaves rural towns reeling,” which appeared in today’s paper (April 29):
Those aren’t national concerns; they’re local situations
I am glad to pay a share of the costs of Kernersville and Forsyth County
Idaho and Texas should have their work product confiscated by the federal government to pay for North Carolina towns and pay bureaucrats a rake-off in the process — or why we in North Carolina should pay for whatever other states and regions want
Elon Musk and Donald Trump will make some mistakes
as anyone would in such a comprehensive undertaking
and I wish they would correct their errors sooner
We simply cannot afford what the politicians cost us through direct taxes and through monetary inflation
I only hope it’s not too late to save our broke country and the value of an old man’s life’s savings
I have lived in rural places in Iowa early in my working life
where we recognized everyone in town and knew many fairly well and later on as a Marine because Marine Corps Air Stations are located in isolated places because we sometimes crashed airplanes and wanted to minimize damage when we did
But if those towns have served their purposes
it’s time for the inhabitants to move to where they can produce enough value to sustain themselves
What is going on in the brains of those who want to protect illegal immigrants who have committed crimes in our country
Their hatred has overcome any common sense they might have had
I have called and written on several occasions about several different scary things
there has been no shortage of scary things to write about
And I don’t think it’s just the people who didn’t vote for Trump
The infection of fear is spreading much further than that
And you should know that the brunt of blame (beside the fact that cruelty is incessantly spewing from the Oval Office) is going to fall squarely on your shoulders and those of your fellow Republican senators and members of Congress
You are the ones who have the power to change this horrible trajectory
You (at least most of you) must know that this is a path of destruction for America
And yet … it seems that nothing is quite bad enough
no financial decision irresponsible enough
no offense felonious enough and no deportation illegal enough for you to stop him
Surely there is an impeachable offense there
I am sure the pressure is great for you to serve those who elected you
but you must see by now that even those people are afraid
I am not only afraid for the direction this country is moving
but I am also personally afraid for myself
my 92-year-old mother and some of my very best friends
And I am guessing I will get some kind of form letter back assuring me that all will be well and telling me the things you are doing within the guardrails of your job
But none of that nonsense is going to assure me of anything until I see someone fighting back ..
I am a 64-year-old mother of four grown children
And I am doing everything in my power to save the country
Please write or call me and tell me that you are
I see that Donald Trump attended Pope Francis’ funeral
I am surprised he could take the time out from his dismantling our democracy here in the U.S
self-absorbed people in the news for the characters in “The Great Gatsby” and it is clear why F
Scott Fitzgerald’s novel has become an American classic

flag in my attic from the funeral of my wife’s uncle
I never knew him but the word was that “he came back never the same.”
I listened to the tone poem “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius
you can hear the Finns lying down in the snow to fight the Russian onslaught
I’m thinking there’s a good chance that Donald has: 1) never lay in the snow
2) never been so cold that he feared he might die
During the election President Trump said immigrants with criminal convictions were his focus for deportations
but the attention has shifted to all immigrants
Ninety percent of the people sent to the dreadful prison in El Salvador have no convictions
Afghans who fled the Taliban in Iraq and aided our troops during the war as well as Cubans
Venezuelans and Haitians lost their protected status and were ordered to go home where they could face death
Naturalized citizens are also terrified and the immigration system is in chaos
Polls show 81% of Americans prefer going slower and making fewer mistakes
The Supreme Court ordered that due process is required and notice given before deporting immigrants which is being disputed
citizens (including children) are being caught in rapid deportations
Recent polls show 61% of Americans are against deportation of immigrants without criminal convictions and due process; half don’t want deportations if they have a job
and two-thirds do not support deportations if they are married and have U.S.-citizen children
Until recently International students were having their visas canceled
were being abducted off the streets and were facing deportation
the administration is reconsidering this approach
Thom Tillis and Ted Budd and the representative for your district
urging them to intercede and show support for the rule of law and humane treatment when dealing with immigrants
The rule of law is the foundation of democracy and keeps us all safer
Trump’s authoritarian suppression of civil rights and subversion of the other branches of government follow a clear path to fascism
“Fascism in America would work under the guise of “super-patriotism” or “super-Americanism … The U.S
… experienced sorry instances of mob sadism
have used undemocratic methods and doctrines which…can be properly identified as ‘fascist.’”
“The fundamental principle of democracy—FAITH IN THE COMMON SENSE OF THE COMMON PEOPLE—was the direct OPPOSITE of the fascist principle of rule by the ELITE FEW.’”
The indiscriminate labeling of opponents as “’Red’ [communist
NO EQUALITY BEFORE LAW …Freedom requires “being alert and on guard against the infringement not only of our own freedom but THE FREEDOM OF EVERY AMERICAN.”
“By getting men to HATE rather than to THINK,” fascism prevents them “from seeking the real cause and a democratic solution to the problem.”
or else it would soon become the man of sin
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Tricia McManus is a likeable person who was put in an impossible position
could manage it and the school system in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County at the same time was delusional
She did not “retire.” She resigned from her contractual agreement
Trying to announce this as a retirement is ridiculous
I hope she is not going to have retirement benefits after just months on the job
her actions while employed give me no reason to believe she “will be hard to replace.”
After three months of the Trump administration
it is now clear that the blueprint for Making America Great Again is Project 2025
It is also clear that MAGA and Project 2025
intend to roll back the calendar to before federal civil rights
voting rights and consumer protections were passed during the 1960s
the Trump administration is attempting to return to entrenched white supremacy and minority disenfranchisement
to reverse decades of progress on women’s rights and gender equality
to roll back social welfare and safety nets
and to undo gains in using renewable energy and combating climate change
The aim clearly is to reclaim and protect unresisted white power and perceived white interests at any cost
intimidation and violence can be justified to keep culturally different and marginalized communities “in their place.” Why do I say that
I recognize it from growing up in the Jim Crow South as a white male during the 1950s and 1960s
I recognize MAGA and Project 2025 for what they are at their core: white domination
minority suppression and intolerance of dissent
Let’s not fool ourselves that MAGA and Project 2025 are
humble and compassionate man on Easter Monday morning who truly walked in the footsteps of Christ all of his life
I disagreed with him on a couple of issues
but I always thought that he was open to different ideas and wanted Catholicism to reach out to
sexual preference or gender identification
He fought for the disadvantaged and marginalized in our world
He taught us all the importance of having a moral compass and a conscience at a time when they are desperately needed
I will miss him greatly and hope the College of Cardinals has the wisdom to pick someone who will carry on his work
Pete Hegseth is leading a “leakers” investigation at the Pentagon
I had a great civics teacher back in junior high
I’m old and that’s what grades 7-9 were called back in the 1970s.)
I learned that we had officials who represented us and that these officials were democratically elected
these officials were responsible for representing all of their “constituents.”
Ted Budd about a Medicare policy that allows hospitals to overstate the expenses they report to Medicare for the medical services the hospital provides to its own employees
He told me to “go away” and refused to meet with me
McDowell and he directed me to contact Republican House members in charge of the relevant House committees
I worry for our future generations after this fever breaks
You might convince people to believe a lie but it’s still a lie
If your golf ball lands in the rough and you “find” it on the green
If most of your businesses end in bankruptcy you are not “a successful businessman,” you are a failed businessman
If a jury convicts you of a felony and you manage to avoid jail and fines
If a lot of people elect a con man president
they aren’t bad people but their president is a con man
No matter how much gold plating you put on a toilet
The headline in Wednesday’s food section for the article about the closing of Murphy’s Lunch (“Meat’s Off the Menu: Murphy’s to close; vegan restaurant to replace it”) has a really ugly sound — the message seems to be that the evil vegans are responsible for chasing off the beloved
Mike’s Vegan Grill food truck has been a welcome feature on the Winston-Salem food scene for several years now
and it always has a long line at festivals
very hearty things like chili cheese fries and Philly cheesesteaks that everyone can enjoy
There’s a lot to love at Mike’s and this will be a glow-up for downtown eating options
Headlines are often misleading about the content of articles — and they’re often all anyone reads
We can bid farewell to Murphy’s and also welcome Mike’s to downtown Winston-Salem
Can your staff do an article on driving and road rage for readers
That includes things to highlight tips on what safe driving looks like: proper use of turn signals
proper use of driving distance to avoid excessive braking or collisions
and proper use of headlights to avoid blinding distractions
excessive driving speeds in haste and use of cellphones while doing all this
causing cut-offs and dangerous weaving and crossing the lines into oncoming traffic
perhaps a refresher on the basics of safe driving could highlight some of the best ways to turn impatience and payback rage into polite and courteous driving
making the roads as quiet and civil as they used to be
the first hundred days of a president’s term was viewed as favorable by most of the American people
The two exceptions were Donald Trump’s two terms
Polling after the first hundred days of Trump’s first term showed that only 41% of Americans approved of his performance
Polling after the first hundred days of Trump’s second term showed that only 45% of Americans approved of his performance
Here are some of my reasons for giving Trump bad grades
I plead with the 55% who disapprove of Trump’s actions to vote Democratic in 2026
