Actor Timothy Spall began VE Day commemorations in London on Monday by reading extracts of then prime minister Winston Churchill’s victory speech to the nation on May 8 1945
The events on bank holiday Monday mark the beginning of four days of celebration across the nation up until Thursday May 8, exactly 80 years since Victory in Europe was declared.
Standing in front of the statue of the Second World War leader in Parliament Square, Spall, 68, said: “My dear friends, this is your hour.
“This is not victory of a party or of any class.
“It’s a victory of the Great British nation as a whole.
“We were the first, in this ancient island, to draw the sword against tyranny.”
“Every man, woman and child in the country had no thought of quitting the struggle.
“When shall the reputation and faith of this generation of men and women fail?
“I say that in the long years to come not only will the people of this island, but of the world, wherever the bird of freedom chirps in human hearts, look back to what we have done and they will say: ‘Do not despair, do not yield to violence and tyranny, march straightforward and die if need be unconquered’.”
Leading into the NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans' focus was on Cam Ward and how they were going to build around their young quarterback
While they did that in free agency and on Day 3 of the draft
Day 2 of the 2025 NFL draft focused on improving a defense that was up-and-down in 2024
the Titans selected edge Oluwafemi Oladejo and safety Kevin Winston Jr
Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports believes that one of those two selections will be an overwhelming success and one of his Top 10 instant impact rookies for 2025
Instead of either of the first-round tight ends who find themselves in crowded skill-position rooms in Indianapolis and Chicago respectively
I'm taking a big swing here with a safety who spent most of the pre-draft process injured and was a third-round selection
Winston was that good at Penn State roaming the deep middle and flying to the football on outside runs
One of my favorite stats for any prospect in the 2025 class: Winston did not miss a tackle on 506 snaps as a sophomore in 2023 while making 61 tackles
After tearing a knee ligament in September
Winston was able to sneak in a workout right before the draft
He's a supercharged mover on the field with ridiculously long arms that help not only knock away passes but defeat blockers blocking his path to the football
Tennessee was desperate for a true leader in the back seven of their defense
and I genuinely believe they selected that next player for them at No
Winston would definitely have been taken higher if the majority of his 2024 campaign was not wiped out by a knee injury suffered in September
The explosive defender is a tone setter in the secondary and was a tremendous value in the third round
The Titans needed to add a young safety to the mix in the secondary and he is just that
general manager Mike Borgonzi addressed the injury concerns and stated that the medical staff believes Winston will be a full participant in training camp and should be able to come in and compete for playing time early in his career
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Free agent quarterback Jameis Winston announced Friday that he has agreed to sign with the New York Giants
"Start spreading the neWs," Winston posted on his X account Friday
confirming his excitement over his new football home with an apple emoji
It was starting to seem in recent days as if the Giants were a long shot for Rodgers
Winston gives them a quarterback capable of starting who can also serve as a mentor to a young quarterback from the draft
New York is still expected to add to its quarterback room again this offseason
Co-owner John Mara said earlier this year that finding the team's quarterback of the future was the No. 1 priority this offseason. Winston and Tommy DeVito are the only two quarterbacks currently on the Giants' roster
Winston, 31, visited with the Giants earlier in the week. This came on the heels of Joe Flacco and Russell Wilson coming to New Jersey the previous week
Winston began the 2024 season as the backup to Deshaun Watson but took over as the Cleveland Browns' starter after Watson's season-ending right Achilles tendon tear in Week 7
He helped spark a Browns offense that failed to reach 20 points in any of Watson's starts. Winston engineered upset victories over the Baltimore Ravens and Steelers, and he threw for a franchise-record 497 yards in a Week 13 loss to the Denver Broncos
was benched in Week 16 after throwing eight interceptions in a span of three games
The Browns were 2-5 in games that Winston started
Winston finished the year completing 61.1% of his passes for 2,121 yards
13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while also running for one score
While working as a media correspondent at the Super Bowl, Winston asked Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley where he should sign
Winston later expressed his interest in the Giants
Absolutely!" Winston told NJ Advance Media at the time
"I want to keep playing and do what I do best."
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Winston entered the NFL as the No. 1 pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015. After five seasons in Tampa Bay, Winston spent four seasons with the New Orleans Saints before signing with Cleveland last offseason
Winston has appeared in 105 games with 87 starts
He has completed 61.2% of his passes for 24,225 yards
ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi contributed to this report
NZ First leader Winston Peters has mounted a defence of his party's proposal to define "woman" in law when questioned over its enforcement in a sometimes fiery interview with RNZ's Morning Report
The party has proposed new legislation to ensure the term "woman" is interpreted as "an adult human biological female" and "man" as an "adult human biological male" across all laws
The member's bill, submitted in the name of MP Jenny Marcroft, comes days after Britain's highest court ruled that only biological - and not trans - women meet the definition of a woman under the UK's laws
The bill is not government policy and will only be debated if it is pulled at random from the ballot
Peters said New Zealand First had been arguing the matter "for years" and it aligned New Zealand with the majority
"It would be catching up with the mass majority of people in the world and not going down some woke leftist ideology track where no-one knows what's what."
Peters said the government had "no place in the nation's bedrooms" but the proposed law was simply "putting the facts out there that are biologically correct"
Peters said transgender women would not be challenged until they walked into a single-sex space
or if they wanted to participate in a sporting situation like rugby or boxing
"If you're going to make a claim that you have something you're not
you will be subjected to a biological test
Peters said he intended this bill to replace a self-identification law which allows New Zealand citizens to change their registered sex on their birth certificate
That legislation was introduced by former NZ First MP Tracey Martin when she was Internal Affairs minister
She then paused progress on the bill in 2019 citing "complications"
It was later picked up after the 2020 election by Martin's successor
Peters objected to a question about Martin's involvement
saying Parliament was in lockdown and: "She got away with doing that behind our backs."
Martin told RNZ: "If two men are going to talk about me
it would be nice if they got their facts right."
Towards the end of the Morning Report interview
Peters also took aim at interviewer Corin Dann
accusing him of advancing the views of NZ First's opponents
Dann had raised the criticism lodged by Labour and the Greens that Peters was importing a culture war to distract from his failures at home
Peters said the line of questioning was "so typical" of RNZ
you're paid for by the taxpayer and sooner or later we're going to cut that water off too
You're not hearing both sides of the story
you keep on putting the argument of the woke left
"You're a disgrace to the mainstream media."
He also said that when other political parties were interviewed the atmosphere was "placid," adding it was little wonder that public faith in the media was dropping
Dann pushed back on Peters' allegations: "I'm sorry
but you're not going to accuse me of putting up [your critics'] arguments and believing in them
I'm the Devil's advocate here and I put up the argument for you to answer."
An RNZ spokesperson said RNZ had a rigourous editorial policy that demanded its work was always underpinned by fairness
"This was a robust political interview where our interviewer conducted himself in a professional manner." the spokesperson said in a statement
"RNZ was recently recognised as New Zealand's most trusted news brand
A result that is consistent with our own research that shows trust in RNZ has increased over the last year and a result that demonstrates our strategic focus on improving trust
"We will continue to deliver reliable and trustworthy information to all New Zealanders and cover the topical issues of the day."
said National as a caucus would consider the bill if it was drawn from the ballot
he said he had already made his views clear that "pregnant people
and let's use some common sense language."
Luxon said New Zealanders were more concerned about the government focusing on the economy
Labour leader Chris Hipkins told RNZ it was "highly unlikely" Labour would support the bill
"We've had a long and proud tradition of empowering people to be who they are
and I think that's highly unlikely to change
it's kind of bizarre that this is Winston Peters' number one priority at the moment," he said
It says only biological and not trans women meet the definition of a woman under equality laws
New Zealand First is pushing for the term "woman" to be defined in law as "an adult human biological female" as the party vows to fight "cancerous social engineering" and "woke ideology"
Associate Health Minister Casey Costello has told the agency "only women and people of the female sex can get pregnant"
Winston Peters has angrily rejected evidence that his party's constitution has similar diversity requirements as the public service targets that he wants scrapped
A law change allowing New Zealand citizens to change their registered sex on their birth certificate has kicked in from today

Gordon tossed five innings of one-hit baseball and struck out six Grasshoppers in the process
the left-hander for Winston-Salem and the right-hander for Greensboro were in the midst of a pitchers duel
Both teams watched their starters shine through the first 15 outs of their respective nights
The Dash would see the newest arm first – Ryan Harbin entered for Greensboro in the top of the sixth
After a pair of walks, Alec Makarewicz broke the scoreless tie with his fourth double on the season to score Braden Montgomery, the newest Dash addition, and Jackson Appel to give Winston-Salem the first runs of the contest

To close, Mark McLaughlin tossed a pair of scoreless innings, and Winston-Salem added one more in the ninth to solidify their first shutout performance of the season. Gordon (1-1) earned the win while Harbin (1-1) took the loss.

– Penn State football defensive back Kevin Winston Jr
was selected in the third round (82nd overall) of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans on Friday
With defensive end Abdul Carter (3rd overall
Penn State has at least three selections in the first two days of the NFL Draft for the fifth-straight season
Winston’s selection marks the fourth-straight season Penn State has had a defensive back picked
Georgia and Michigan as the only schools with a defensive back drafted in each of the last four years
Penn State has had 15 defensive backs selected in the NFL Draft
That is the most in the Big Ten and ranks second among FBS teams
Penn State is one of two schools that has had a player selected among the first three rounds of the NFL Draft in 20-straight years
The Nittany Lions have a total of 47 players who have been drafted in the last eight NFL drafts
the most in an eight-year span for the program since 1990-97 (49 picks)
A total of 391 Nittany Lions have been selected all-time in the NFL Draft, which ranks seventh among Division I institutions. Penn State has had 56 players selected since James Franklin’s arrival to the program in 2014
including 25 taken on the first two days of the draft
Franklin has the most defensive backs selected (15) among active FBS head coaches
Winston is Penn State’s 42nd defensive back selected in the NFL Draft. He is the 15th defensive back selected in the James Franklin era
most among active FBS head coaches since 2015
He is the 15th Nittany Lion to be selected by the Titans all-time and the first since DT Austin Johnson (2nd Round) in 2016
“I couldn’t be happier for KJ Winston and his family for earning this opportunity in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans,” said Franklin
“He earned All-Big Ten honors as a safety for us and has elite athleticism
and his love of the game shows in his focus and preparation
He earned the respect of the locker room through his leadership and was voted a team captain for us
KJ will be a tremendous representative of the Titans organization
"KJ Winston is as athletic as they come at the safety position,” said co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Anthony Poindexter
“He is ready for this opportunity with the Titans
and carries himself in a truly professional manner
He is an extremely hard worker who loves studying the game
He showed tremendous growth during his three years with us
and I know the best is still ahead for him
He is going to have an extremely successful NFL career."
Penn State opens the 2025 campaign against Nevada on Saturday

The team has effectively found their franchise quarterback of the future and ironed out questions at a major position of need with a talented potential star to come
However, when digging a bit deeper in the Titans' batch of prospects beyond their top pick
there's one player in the mix that arises with a ton of appeal in terms of value and potential fit that the team managed to pick up later down the board: Penn State safety Kevin Winston Jr
Winston Jr. was picked up with the No. 80 selection in the draft at the top of the third round, and since the selection, Tennessee has gotten no shortage of praise for the move. NFL.com's Gennaro Filice is the latest to commend the Titans for their draft pick
"I can’t factually state that Winston’s partially torn ACL in early September is the only thing that kept him from coming off the board on Thursday night, but I think it’s a fair thing to consider," Filice wrote
speed and physicality of a first-round safety
And given that he ran a 4.50 40 at Penn State’s pro day
it would appear his recovery’s coming along swimmingly."
For Winston, it all comes down to if/when his knee injury heals fully and allows him to come back to 100% at the next level. If he can do that, it'll mean massive things for the future of this Titans defense
During the last season in which he was fully healthy
Winston was an impact player in the back end of the Penn State defense
If the Titans can get first-round-esque value and production out of Winston Jr
it'll be a major win to walk out of this draft with
considering he fell into their laps toward the end of day two

When you win a conference track championship by .5 points
that’s a good indication it was a total team effort
The Winston-Salem State women’s track team won the CIAA championship on Saturday night and Coach Antonio Wells was more than happy to talk team instead of individuals
“Everybody just had to come across the line or complete their throws or jumps to the best of their ability and they all did that,” Wells said about winning the conference championship by the slimmest of margins over Fayetteville State
Antonio Wells was named the CIAA coach of the year for women's track
The championships were held in Durham over the weekend
and the Rams scored 136.5 points with Fayetteville State second with 136 points
Claflin was third with 120.5 points and Virginia State was fourth with 57.5
it was his second outdoor championship following up the Rams’ win in 2022
Wells was also named the CIAA coach of the year and Charnessa Reid was named the women’s track athlete of the year
Reid, who is a Mount Tabor graduate, was third in the long jump and won the 100-meter hurdles
Charnessa Reid was third in the long jump at the CIAA championships and won the 100-meter hurdles
Elicia Bryant won the 1,500 meters and Brianna Benloss won the 100- and 200-meter races
Bryant wound up scoring 23 points for the Rams and was the MVP of the meet as she also got second place in the 800 meters and a fourth in the 3,000 meters
It was the 3,000 meters where Jaiyah Nelson placed eighth to get the Rams a valuable point
Wells said that was the difference in the Rams beating the Broncos by the half point
Coach Antonio Wells of WSSU won his second CIAA outdoor track title on Saturday
“We didn’t tell her that she needed to finish eighth
but she knew it got us a point by finishing eighth,” Wells said
“That was pretty impressive that she worked hard to get to that eighth position.”
Asheika Smith of the Rams was second in the 400 meters and teammate Simone Kelly was fifth with Daijion Lee sixth and Olivia Cosby in seventh
They all picked up valuable points for the Rams in that final
Wells said before they headed back to campus on Saturday night several parents had set up a tailgate and the team was fed
and then we came back to campus,” Wells said
we didn’t do much celebrating but I’m so proud of how the entire team really performed.”
The WSSU women’s track team won the CIAA title on Saturday in Durham
They will go through exams this week and a few of the athletes will graduate on Friday
“We will have a last chance meet where some of them can try and get qualifying times for the NCAA’s,” Wells said
“And we have several athletes that have times and marks already
It was a great way to end our season as a team winning the CIAA.”

Winston played in just three games, with two starts, in 2024 after suffering an ACL injury.
During a conference call with Nashville media, Winston said he's feeling good physically.
"My knee, everything has been looking great," Winston said. "I've been doing rehab, and rehab has been going well. I am on track to even get ahead of what I was doing, as I was able to run by 40 at Pro Day. But everything has been going great, and I am feeling amazing."
Titans General Manager Mike Borgonzi said he's excited about Winston, and his potential.
"He is a tough, physical player that probably would've went a little higher in the draft," Borgonzi said. "He had the ACL in September, and we felt comfortable with the doctors that he'd be ready for training camp."
In 2023, Winston started all 13 games at safety and made a team-high 61 tackles (35 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, an interception and five pass breakups. He was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten Conference performance.
The Titans initially held the 35th pick in the second round, but traded with Seattle for picks 52 and 82 (third round).
The team used the third-round pick on Winston, who hopes to make a difference on his new team.
"Overall, as a player, I am going to go out there and whatever the job is for the team, to put us in the best position, that is what I am going to do, and it doesn't matter what that may be," Winston said. "I am willing to go out there and do it at a high level and no complaints or anything. I am just ready to put my head down and work.
"My big thing coming in is to earn respect. I am going to come in ready to play, on the defensive side, special teams, whatever it may be. I am ready to earn the respect of my teammates, coaches, everybody in the building about how I conduct myself not only as a player, but as a person as well."
The Titans selected Penn State, S Kevin Winston Jr. in the third round of Friday's 2025 NFL Draft. Winston Jr. was selected with the 82nd overall pick.

— Advocates and educators gathered in downtown Winston-Salem outside Forsyth County government buildings to demand increased funding for public education
"We’re here for public education to raise awareness because we need to fully fund our education for your students
a teacher with Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools
Protesters raised signs and voiced concerns about low wages that fail to keep pace with the cost of living
as well as insufficient funding for public education
Morley highlighted the state's ranking
"We are currently 34th in the nation in per-person spending
and we just need to fully fund education in this state."
The North Carolina Association of Educators reports that teachers in the state earn less than the national average
a Winston-Salem resident and single parent with four children in the local public schools
"It was a period of such stress and anxiety
and trying to figure out who’s going to get my kid off the school bus or making sure if they get into the apartment," she said
Castillo eventually found affordable childcare and now encourages others to contribute to the community
"See what resources you have that you can help provide in the community
maybe you can help sponsor a scholarship for somebody for an after-school program
You could donate some of your time to help out at a local food bank," Castillo said
The protest was organized by the North Carolina and Forsyth County Association of Educators
Demonstrators vowed to continue advocating for better pay and more resources
Brian Daboll asked two players who need no introduction to introduce themselves to the offense on Monday
Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston obliged and stood in front of their new teammates for the first time
"I think that's important for the quarterback position," the head coach said
Russell has been doing this for a long time
I asked them to get up this morning in front of the offense and talk a little bit about their story
kind of where they came from and who is important to them in their life and what's important to them in this game
They've done it in a number of places; I expect them to do that here."
The Giants reported to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Monday for the start of the offseason workout program
The next nine weeks will evolve from strength and conditioning to installation and ultimately practices
What they do in the spring will set the stage for training camp and thus the season
"Dabs ran a great meeting today," said Wilson
who had already gotten in some extra work with his tight ends and receivers while training in San Diego and Atlanta
Just to be able to go up there and talk to the guys about kind of where I come from and just my story a little bit and just the focus of it all and what we want to accomplish individually
I'm excited to have the opportunity to play and be a New York Giant
The New York Giants' 2025 offseason workout program is underway at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center
While many of the players on offense are already familiar with each other
they are not with the most important position in the sport – at least
Most have been watching Wilson and Winston on TV for years
"I'm super excited to work with him," said second-year tight end Theo Johnson
who was just about to turn 13 when Wilson won Super Bowl XLVIII
I think he's going to be not only great for our offense
… From the very first interaction with him
you could tell the guy knows a lot of ball
and the biggest takeaway for me was just his passion
He loves football and every aspect of the game
which is infectious and something that he's going to infect in our locker room just his love and his passion for the game."
The quarterbacks aren't the only new faces
The Giants kicked off free agency with the signings of cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevón Holland
who forced three fumbles in a game against Wilson's Broncos in 2023
The two joked about that in the locker room this morning
Holland's mother is a "big Seahawks fan" and his father spent time with the 49ers
so the Bay area native knows all about Wilson
And his new backfield partner knows a lot about Holland
I've actually been watching Jevón for a while
since I was in college," second-year safety Tyler Nubin said
I was excited to hear that he was going to being part of our team
"It's always better when the players are in the building," Daboll said

The question came as part of a broader appeal regarding British citizens who have faced legal consequences for what Marshall characterised as "hate speech" prosecutions
Marshall claimed that people in Britain face 'extensive prison sentences for tweets
social media posts and general free speech issues'
Leavitt appeared visibly surprised by Marshall's question during the briefing
"I have not heard that proposed to the president nor have I spoken to him about that idea," she responded
Leavitt did not dismiss the concept outright
She added that she "certainly can talk to our National Security team and see if it's something the administration would entertain"

Jaxson Dart will finally get to fulfill his dream of working with… Jameis Winston
In an interview with Overtime, the former Ole Miss quarterback revealed his surprising answer to a question he was asked at the NFL Scouting Combine
and I said 'Jameis Winston.' I said Jameis
Jaxson Dart is a big fan of Jameis Winston
The Mount Rushmore of legendary QBs: Brady
"If you really pay attention to his workouts
he's like actually grinding," Dart explained
"I feel like he would be the best teammate
Because you hear everybody talk about him like he's super football intelligent and I feel like he'd be a really good guy to learn from."
he now gets to train with his dream teammate
The 21-year-old joins a Giants quarterbacks' room that includes Winston
Tommy DeVito and former Super Bowl champ Russell Wilson
I think it's just a great opportunity for me to learn," Dart said
"They've played at the highest level
I remember as a little kid I was watching Russ play and I actually have a jersey of him when he was with the Seahawks.
it's a surreal experience to be able to play here and play with those great guys
and I'm just really prepared to take it day by day and try to improve myself and learn from them as much as I can."
will likely use 2025 as a "red shirt" year for Dart — giving him the opportunity to soak up all the sage wisdom that Jameis Winston has to offer

with the 82nd overall pick of the NFL Draft
potentially getting first-round value in the third round
Winston ranked among the top-5 safeties in the draft class even though he played barely five quarters last season
underscoring his value to defenses that value hard-hitting safeties
Winston might have joined them in the first round
Here's what to know about the Titans' third-round draft pick
After an All-Big Ten junior season at Penn State in 2023
Winston returned as a team captain and one of the Nittany Lions' best overall players
Scouting services graded him as a potential first-rounder
Pro Football Focus slotted Winston as the No
22 pick overall behind a run-stopping grade of 90.6
Winston began the 2024 season with a rousing game against West Virginia
making 12 tackles and recovering a fumble in the Nittany Lions' 34-12 win
But the following week against Bowling Green
Winston removed himself in the second quarter
choosing to have surgery for a knee injury
Though he could have returned to Penn State
Winston stuck to his plan and declared for the draft
He still served as a captain for the Nittany Lions
returning to travel with the team for the College Football Playoff
215 pounds) is a big presence in the secondary
He continued Penn State's streak of aggressive run-stopping safeties (Jaquan Brisker
Ji'Ayir Brown) with a deeply physical style of play
Winston led Penn State with 60 tackles in 2023 as an active player in the run defense
He won't play a supporting role in defending the run game
Winston also has the burst to be effective in safety blitz situations
Though he didn't test at the NFl Scouting Combine
Winston returned to run a 4.51 40 at Penn State's Pro Day in late March
Winston said that he expects to be 100 percent for training camp but wanted to run at Pro Day to prove his recovery path
"It was very important for me," Winston said at Pro Day
coupled with Winston's decision to enter the draft
He was only a one-year starter at Penn State and lacks the diagnostic reps
Winston's processing speed is behind where it should be
Since Winston continues to recover from injury
he likely won't project as a first-year starter in the NFL
"He will still need to develop some eye discipline to quickly and accurately read a play's design, or route being run, so that he can further use his length, range, and physicality to disrupt," Sports Info Solutions wrote in its scouting report of Winston
On entering the draft: "I don’t think it was a very difficult decision considering the injury was very early in the season
Obviously if it was the last game of the season or the middle
there would be kind of some gray area there
But with it being at the beginning of the season
On what questions NFL teams had during the pre-draft process: "The big one is
That’s the main thing; what was my thought process
I knew physically I was ready to go to the NFL and compete with the best of the best
Am I mentally ready to go to the next level
I’ve been training myself since I was a freshman
I had alll the habits I needed to be a pro
Thinking through all that allowed me to make the decision to come out."

in the third round after he suffered a torn ACL in September
Winston is expected to make a full recovery
he could be one of the Titans' key players on defense for the upcoming season
CBS Sports writer Chris Trapasso named Winston as the ninth-best "instant impact" rookie in the 2025 draft class
"Instead of either of the first-round tight ends who find themselves in crowded skill-position rooms in Indianapolis and Chicago respectively
I'm taking a big swing here with a safety who spent most of the pre-draft process injured and was a third-round selection," Trapasso wrote
Winston was that good at Penn State roaming the deep middle and flying to the football on outside runs
three of which were tackles for loss."

He's a supercharged mover on the field with ridiculously long arms that help not only knock away passes but defeat blockers blocking his path to the football
