Former Wolves defender David Woodfield has sadly passed away at the age of 81
Woodfield represented Wolves for 12-and-a-half years and was deemed an unsung hero of his era
Between 1959 and 1971 Woodfield represented the club 276 times
and although he played in a number of positions
it was in the centre of defence where he felt most at home
Woodfield provided consistency to the back line under four separate Old Gold managers
including Stan Cullis initially and Bill McGarry at the opposite end of his Molineux spell
Having joined the club as an amateur initially
he turned professional within a year and progressed through the youth system to make his senior Wolves debut in April 1962
The 1962/63 campaign saw him become a regular
and having stayed despite relegation in 1965
Woodfield starred as Ronnie Allen guided Wolves back to the top flight in style
With the club back in the old First Division
before moving to Watford for £30,000 in 1971
not before his testimonial at Molineux after more than ten years at the club.
Following retirement at the Hornets due to injury
Woodfield was reunited with McGarry as his assistant manager at Newcastle United
Woodfield returned to the UK to live in Cambridgeshire and visited Molineux for the final time in September 2019
The thoughts of all at Wolves are with David’s friends and family at this sad time

There are malls closer to home for Jennifer Wingelnik
But the Brookfield resident says Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg is the place to be for Black Friday.
Why? “Because we’ve all come here every year since I’ve been little,” the 43-year-old said as she ate around 9:30 a.m. in the mall’s food court.
“It’s the biggest,” said her 10-year-old daughter, Sophie.
They and Wingelnik’s mother, Pam Schefke of Berwyn, and sister, Joellen Schefke of Berwyn, were clad in matching Christmas-themed pajamas.
They stood in line for the doors at the JCPenney store to open at 5 a.m. — an hour before the mall itself opened.
“We usually fill the car,” Pam Schefke said. After leaving the mall, they hit stores on Golf Road as they head home.
The mall was busy by mid-morning, with lines outside a few stores. A worker dressed as a Christmas elf used a hand-click counter to keep tabs on capacity at the Lego toy store.
Greg Mills of Elgin arrived at 6 a.m. with his wife, Courtney, and daughter, Emily. It was Emily’s “yes day” — where she was given a budget of $200 and allowed to buy whatever she wanted, within reason. Emily said she had also saved money from a previous “yes day.”
Mills was parked on a bench, watching bags, while Courtney and Emily were in a boutique, “because I’m getting old enough to know it’s time to sit down when it is time to sit down,” the 45-year-old said.
One reason might be that, according to a survey commissioned by the National Retail Federation, about 58% of people surveyed had already started their holiday shopping before Thanksgiving Day.
Of those who were planning to shop in-person or online from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, 57% said they would do it for bargains and 28% because it was a traditional activity.
Gene Walters was shopping for both reasons.
Clad in a Santa Claus hat and a Grinch-themed short-sleeved shirt, the 52-year-old Schaumburg resident got up at 3:30 a.m. to drive his 15-year-old daughter and three of her friends to the mall.
Walters has been taking his daughter to the mall for Black Friday since she was a tot in a stroller.
On Friday, he met with one of his friends for a while and did some shopping.
But not with his daughter, as it turns out.
“I haven’t seen them since Starbucks,” he said, laughing.

A residential and commercial entertainment development in Estero got the go-ahead Tuesday to start construction on its first phase
two multi-family buildings and parking garages
South Carolina-based Woodfield, led by its Florida representative Ross Abramson, is developing the mixed-use project on 46 acres on the northwest corner of Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) and Coconut Road. The project is being compared to the 53-acre Mercato in Naples with plans for 596 dwelling units
public entertainment areas and office space
"Some of us call it like a little mini-Mercado because it's got vertical mixed use and some shopping and entertainment areas and parks and apartments and a possible hotel as well," said Mary Gibbs
whose development order was approved unanimously Tuesday by the Village of Estero's Planning Zoning and Design Board
a large open green and an amphitheater to create a walkable community with public spaces for visitors
which will include a minimum of 35,000 square feet of commercial space along with a central park
the public component of restaurant row and the Rambla Street
Village planners required Woodfield to install a traffic signal or roundabout at Coconut Road and Walden Center Drive as part of the zoning approval in 2023 by Village Council
Woodfield designed a two-lane roundabout with one lane going south and the other going north
"I think everybody has decided that the roundabout is the best solution for the traffic," Gibbs said
A roundabout is smaller than a traffic circle
according to Florida Department of Transportation
Vehicles have to yield before entering a roundabout
whereas a traffic circle often has signage within the circle
"One of the benefits of roundabouts is that they help slow people down," said transportation engineer Elizabeth Suárez
Not everyone likes the idea of a roundabout or more traffic in the community
And I think it will be a real plus for the village," said board member Anthony Gargano
"But I reiterate my concerns about traffic because we have a responsibility to our residents to deliver projects that don't so much negatively impact their quality of life by having to sit in traffic for as long as we have to."
In case you missed it: Veteran developer has Naples Mercato-style plans ready to go this week in south Lee County
The planning board on Tuesday also approved a zoning amendment that if approved by Village Council will allow for construction of a 122-room four-story extended stay at 22910 Lyden Drive
Lyden Drive runs parallel to U.S. 41 and directly in front of the community Marsh Landing. Residents had a lot to say about the proposed hotel, so much so that the case was continued from an October meeting so that developer InterMountain Hotels could meet with Marsh Landing residents
Developers also removed plans for a restaurant and for any on-site drinking sales
something that pleased at least one board member
and the applicant was willing to work with the people next door and satisfy their concerns
removed the restaurant and remove the drinking
That helped you get over the threshold in my mind."
Residents' biggest concerns were about traffic, privacy and security, said Gibbs and Jeremie Chastain, planner with Bowman company Hole Montes.
Intermountain agreed to enhanced buffering, an 8-foot block fence, a "green screen" of vegetation on both sides of the fence, including on Marsh Landing property, along with tinted windows on the hotel in addition to the window treatments on the inside.
Residents expressed their appreciation for the developer's concessions and conversation, however, traffic in the village remains an issue no matter what the project.
"The only thing that does concern me still is traffic," said Estero resident Beth Reinhardt who lives on Lone Oak Drive. "That is our turn. When we come out of Marsh Landing, you have to right and you can only go south."
Schaumburg’s first formal proposal for the residential conversion of an office building got an 8-0 recommendation from the zoning board for a largely vacant five-story structure south of Woodfield Mall.
Both the developer and village officials view it as the first of many residential proposals likely to follow near the bustling shopping and entertainment center.
The village board will consider final approval Feb. 11 for creation of the 98-unit Woodfield Apartments at 1699 E. Woodfield Road, which would include such amenities as a swimming pool in front.
Because a current dental practice would remain on the ground floor, the project is considered a mixed-use redevelopment.
The 45-year-old Natraj Investments building is owned by Subbu Iyer, Manen Kothari and Ajanta Talukdar, who hired Des Plaines-based GSP Development for the project based on the firm’s experience with such conversions.
“We think this is the perfect building to do it,” company President Larry Debb said. “It’s a perfect location.”
The idea unites two existing village initiatives to repurpose underutilized office properties throughout Schaumburg and introduce tall, dense residential buildings to the walkable business district south of Woodfield and west of Streets of Woodfield.
In fact, because Woodfield Apartments uses an existing building, it’s seeking a variance from the minimum seven stories required by the zoning code for new development in that area to stay at its current height.
The plan is to create a mixture of 19 studio, 63 one-bedroom, and 16 two-bedroom apartments. Each unit would have its own balcony, laundry machines and temperature control.
The parking lot would include a single-story garage for 100 vehicles. The building would feature a fitness center, yoga studio, TV room, golf simulator, soundproof music room, self-service pet spa with a pet washing station, and office suites in the basement.
The project’s 16- to18-month time frame includes replacing the exterior with an aluminum surface with a wood appearance.
“It’s a warm design and has a residential look,” Debb said. “This is the first of probably more in the village. We have to do this one right and do it spectacularly.”
Though one zoning board member was absent, the rest reviewed the plan positively.
“I love the way it looks,” member Patty Errera said. “I think it’s going to help that area tremendously.”
A shuttered strip club, a religious group facing public opposition in its bid for open space, and a team of brazen jewel thieves were among the top suburban newsmakers of 2024.
So were restaurants that served their last meals, landmarks that met the wrecking ball and high school students responsible for a controversial yearbook entry.
Here are some of the year’s most captivating Daily Herald stories.
More than $1 million in merchandise reportedly was stolen out of a Woodfield Mall jewelry store in August by burglars who broke through two walls to get inside.
The heist occurred at Marquise Jewelers after it closed for the day. The thieves got into the mall through the back door of a Sbarro restaurant. From there they went through a wall into a vacant unit, and then through another wall into the jewelry store.
Investigators believe six people were involved, based on surveillance footage and witness statements.
No arrests have been made. The store only recently reopened.
Barbecue lovers mourned the demise of Ribfest in DuPage County this summer.
Held for decades in Naperville before shifting to Wheaton in 2022, Ribfest was a crown jewel of the suburban festival circuit, attracting talented food vendors and top-notch musicians. But like so many things, the party went on temporary hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic and never really recovered.
No Ribfest was held this summer, and in late July the group behind the event — the Exchange Club of Naperville — announced the gathering and the organization itself were done for good.
“We were not able to generate enough income to be profitable,” organizers said in a statement posted on Facebook.
Trouble erupted in May when people discovered the latest Glenbrook South High School yearbook, the Etruscan, contained a quote from a Palestinian-American student who appeared to be supporting the October 2023 terrorist attacks against Israel, the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.
A subsequent investigation revealed neither the quoted student nor the teen interviewing her mentioned the attacks during their conversation, and that yearbook adviser Brenda Field was aware of the quote before the yearbook was published.
Field subsequently was removed as yearbook adviser, suspended without pay and forbidden from participating in future student instruction. The online District 225 staff directory now identifies Field as a “Teacher on a Special Assignment.”
In late February, a group called Area N Development LLC successfully won an auction for 34 acres of undeveloped South Barrington Park District land at Bartlett Road and Route 59.
The land, known as Area N, had been the focal point of a quarrel between nearby residents and a religious group that’s owned and operated by a suburban congregation of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. The residents opposed the congregation’s plans to build a church and school there, leading the park district in 2023 to halt a planned sale of the land to the group.
Following the February auction, the park district board unanimously approved the sale of the property to Area N Development for $2.3 million. It was only after that sale was final that representatives of Fourth Avenue Gospel publicly acknowledged they were responsible for the winning bid and were the new owners of the property.
A legal fight ensued and hasn’t yet been resolved, leaving the redevelopment plan in limbo.
Fourth Avenue Gospel members in October announced they’ve grown tired of the delay and want the property excised from the village, a maneuver they believe will allow them to complete their project.
Unfortunately for loyal customers, a number of suburban restaurants served their last meals in 2024.
They included Munchies Pizza & Bar in Elk Grove Village, which was forced to shut down after the village bought the plaza in which it was located with an eye toward redevelopment. It had served pies since 1983.
Also shutting down were Gigio’s Pizzeria in Des Plaines, Park Tavern Rosemont, Lalo’s in Schaumburg, Bangkok Café in Arlington Heights, Billy’s Pancake House in Palatine and Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse in Oak Brook, among others.
But there were bright spots on the suburban restaurant scene. New eateries included Giostra, the Greggory Hearth & Tavern, Higgy’s Bar and Grill and Tangled Roots Brewing Company, all in South Barrington; Nostimo in Arlington Heights; First Watch in Des Plaines; and Chicago Ramen in Mundelein.
Several suburban landmarks were reduced to rubble in 2024.
The year’s most significant demolition job surely was at the former Sears headquarters on Beverly Road in Hoffman Estates. The 2.4 million-square-foot complex started coming down in August.
Five data centers eventually will be built on the 273-acre site, which now is owned by Dallas-based Compass Datacenters.
Demolition crews also were at work at the former Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles; at the southeast corner of Arlington Heights and Algonquin roads in Arlington Heights, where office and commercial buildings were razed to make way for a retail and apartment complex; and at International Plaza on Golf Road in Arlington Heights.
One of the Chicago area’s few strip clubs shut down in June and soon will be demolished to make way for redevelopment.
Heavenly Bodies, which operated for decades on the southwest corner of Higgins and Elmhurst roads just outside Elk Grove Village, was purchased by the village as part of a $6.15 million deal that also included a shuttered Burger King and other property.
Village leaders haven’t announced plans for the sites.
Carol Stream resident Isaac Goodlow III, 30, was fatally shot in his apartment by police responding to a domestic dispute Feb. 3.
Video from body-worn cameras revealed officers identified themselves and went inside; then shots were fired.
Goodlow was pronounced dead at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.
In June, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced he would not prosecute the officer who shot Goodlow.
Goodlow’s sisters have filed a federal lawsuit against the village and the six officers who entered the apartment.
Lisle Police Chief Kevin Licko was placed on leave in February after an employee who hasn’t been publicly identified filed an undisclosed complaint against him. Village officials declined to comment on the complaint or the investigation that followed.
In May, Licko agreed to step down as chief and serve the remainder of his time with the department as a sergeant. He retired in October.
Licko had been with the department since 2004 and had been chief since 2022.
James Kruger, who over the course of a long career led the police departments in Oak Brook, Roselle, Winfield and East Dundee, is serving as acting chief. A permanent replacement hasn’t been chosen.
Prompted by retail trends, suburban shopping malls continued evolving his year.
Bloomingdale’s Stratford Square Mall closed for good in April after years of declining activity. Bloomingdale, which had been buying vacant storefronts for years, purchased the remainder of the 43-year-old mall in January for $8.75 million. Officials hope to redevelop the property with restaurants, entertainment venues, retail outlets, housing and pedestrian-friendly green spaces.
Similar action occurred this year in West Dundee. The village in June spent $7 million to complete its purchase of the Spring Hill Mall, which closed in March after 44 years in business. The village earlier had spent more than $3 million to buy the former Macy’s and Sears spaces there. Officials plan to demolish the 500,000-square-foot structure and redevelop the land.
And last month in Vernon Hills, real estate developers proposed building a 48-unit townhouse development on the northeast side of the Hawthorn Mall property. The land is a parking lot near now the Domaine at Hawthorn Row apartment complex and AMC Theatres. The Domaine opened last year with 313 apartments, and more are planned.

The Chicago region’s fifth Fogo de Chao Brazilian steakhouse is expected to open in April across the street from Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, where construction of its approximately $1.2 million building is nearing completion.
The 8,500-square-foot restaurant at 1950 E. Golf Road is directly east of the Centennial Center office building at 1900 E. Golf Road.
Attorney James Webster, representing the restaurant, attended this week’s Schaumburg village board meeting to apply for the liquor license and described the operation.
“They work off of rotisserie grilled meats that are put on large skewers,” he said. “And then you’ve got roving servers, and they go to the different tables and they’ll slice it off and put it directly on the customers’ plates. Very meat-centric, though they have seafood. They’ve got a great salad bar.”
When Mayor Tom Dailly asked his fellow board members whether there were any questions or comments, Trustee Jack Sullivan replied, “I’m hungry!”
“I was just thinking the same thing,” Dailly laughed. “It sounds delicious.”
Webster added there will be a full bar, but one that’s small in relation to the overall size of the restaurant. The business will open at 11 a.m. every day, closing at 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 9 p.m. on Sunday.
“It’s a great location,” Webster said of the Schaumburg site. “If you like a lot of food, the food is excellent.”
The existing Illinois locations are in Rosemont, Naperville, Oak Brook and Chicago.
Fogo de Chao was started in Brazil in 1979, making Dallas its first U.S. location in 1997.
Since then, there have been 75 more locations that have opened across the country.

Schaumburg police shared additional details Tuesday about their investigation into the burglary of more than $1 million in merchandise from Marquise Jewelers at Woodfield Mall
Those details include that a security camera inside the store was covered when burglars entered the store after its closing Aug
1 by breaking through the wall of a vacant space next door
Though that camera did not record anything useful
a review of footage from other mall cameras is part of the ongoing investigation
Police also revealed that the offenders first forced entry to the mall through the back door of a Sbarro restaurant
then went through a wall there to access the vacant unit next to the jewelry store
Investigators also believe six people were involved in the burglary
based on a combination of surveillance footage and accounts from witnesses in the vicinity at the time of the burglary
Marquise Jewelers co-owner Asma Anwar told the Daily Herald that the combination of property loss and damage is likely to be at least $1.5 million
but Lindhurst said investigators are awaiting an inventory of the stolen merchandise
they have not yet adjusted their initial estimate of just over a $1 million loss
A construction worker entering the vacant unit at 9:30 a.m
Woodfield Mall management have declined to comment
directing all inquiries to Schaumburg police
who’s co-owned Marquise Jewelers with her husband Shazad Malik for 13 years
The couple met working together at a jewelry kiosk at Woodfield before buying and renaming it
They gradually expanded to three more kiosks at the mall
before last year leasing a storefront as their main location where all of its merchandise was ultimately stolen
Anwar said the highly visible and regularly patrolled kiosks never sustained more than minor losses to theft over the years
The husband-and-wife owners are now looking to those kiosks as the means for their business to recover
Anwar hoped to learn more information about security from Woodfield Mall management as the future of the year-old Marquise Jewelers storefront is considered
The developer sees an opportunity to open new projects in an advantageous market in 2026
It's been almost 20 years since Greg Bonifield and Mike Underwood founded Charleston
South Carolina-based apartment developer Woodfield Development after their previous employer
North Carolina-based REIT Summit Properties
was acquired by Houston-based Camden Property Trust
When Bonifield and Underwood launched the firm
they intended to add a new market and on-the-ground development partner every couple of years
Woodfield was developing in the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic
“We've added an experienced developer and development team every couple of years since our inception,” Bonifield told Multifamily Dive
As it has expanded, Woodfield has established itself as one of the country’s biggest developers, taking the No. 16 spot on the National Multifamily Housing Council’s top developer list this year
It has completed 65 properties since its founding and has 21 in production
While some firms have postponed projects as interest rates have risen
Woodfield continues to break ground on new starts
“We had 10 starts last year,” Bonifield said
“We're on track to have at least that many this year.”
Supply is a concern in some of Woodfield’s markets right now
but Bonifield expects that dynamic will change by 2026
“Even the markets that feel a little overbuilt right now look really good within 18 months at most,” Bonifield said
“So we're taking the approach that now is a good time to get shovels in the ground and start new projects.”
Bonifield talks with Multifamily Dive about the debt markets
labor costs and the apartment sales environment
This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity
MULTIFAMILY DIVE: How has the debt market changed for developers since the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates in 2022
GREG BONIFIELD: We've been in a different market for a year and a half
after a couple of bank failures that occurred
debt became much more difficult for a period of time
Debt is less difficult today than it was during the first three quarters of last year
debt is available for projects that underwrite
We have been fortunate in finding partners who see our vision of getting stuff out of the ground now
but a lot of [limited partner] equity is still on the sidelines
probably waiting to see when the Fed is going to make a move and start pivoting
Have you seen labor prices improve as construction starts have fallen
There's no question it's taken a long time for the labor market to start realizing that there are fewer projects coming their way
That's natural because it's not like people stopped building on a dime when the market changed
the subcontractors and general contractors have been very busy
but they're finally seeing that there's a dwindling of new starts
There’s a dwindling of new deals that they’re pricing or they’re pricing deals that aren’t getting done
we're finally seeing some movement on pricing
We're starting to get subcontractors to sharpen their pencils and make the pricing so we can get the deals to underwrite
We've certainly seen land owners be more willing to work with us and give us time to put our capital together
They’re being more flexible and making adjustments
but we haven't seen any kind of dramatic price change for land
Have you slowed down selling your properties
we've really slowed down selling anything because the pricing is generally not where it should be
There's a disconnect between what somebody's willing to pay and what somebody's willing to sell for
which is why you've seen transaction volume decrease
So unless somebody is paying what we think is a fair amount for the deal and something that meets our original underwriting at a minimum
we're taking the approach of getting interim debt and holding these properties for however many years it takes to get back to a lower cap rate
Do you have any predictions on when that is going to come back
We sold a deal last year and got to our number
We're going under contract this week on a deal after getting to our number
There are groups out there willing to pay up for the best sites and deals that are top of the market
There's a lot of money on the side trying to buy deals
The 10-year [Treasury yield] keeps fluctuating between the low fours and five
and it hasn't been sitting steady for any length of time
So I think once you see the stabilization of everything and a pivot by the Fed
that's probably when things start unfreezing
They were frozen during the Great Recession

Schaumburg trustees unanimously approved a proposal to turn an office building into an apartment complex
Woodfield Road will be converted into the highly amenitized 98-unit Woodfield Apartments
though the conversion will occur around a dental practice on the ground floor that is the only remaining office tenant
The building is owned by investors Subbu Iyer
who hired Des Plaines-based GSP Development for the project based on the firm’s experience with similar conversions
Company President Larry Debb told the village’s recommending zoning board last month the building is one of the most perfect he’s come across in both its existing design and high-profile location
The project’s anticipated 16- to18-month time frame includes replacing the original facade with an aluminum surface with a wood appearance
The interior work will carve out a mixture of 19 studio
A single-story garage for 100 vehicles will be constructed in the parking lot
The building’s amenities will include a fitness center
self-service pet spa with a pet washing station and office suites in the basement
While Schaumburg planners expect the project to be influential in a challenged office market
they believe the number of ideal opportunities to mimic it in the village will remain limited
The idea unites two existing village initiatives to repurpose underutilized office properties and introduce tall
dense residential buildings to the walkable business district south of Woodfield and west of Streets of Woodfield
The project needed a variance because it is not the minimum seven stories now required
Remaining land on the site is being considered for a new building that would match height requirements
but there are no formal plans submitted yet

How much did Terry “Bags” Woodfield mean to the modified softball national champion Jock Shop teams of the 1980s
here’s just a small sampling of memories from his teammates:
Bob Schmitt: “He was the straw that stirred the drink.”
Rich Pinciaro: “He was the driving force.”
Younger brother John Woodfield: “We win absolutely nothing without him.”
The Western New York Softball Hall of Fame committee agrees
Woodfield will join 16 others in the Class of 2024 at induction ceremonies at the Lake Erie Italian Club in Lackawanna
“I think it’s a heck of an honor,” Woodfield said
Based on how he controlled the game from behind the plate for two decades
his place among WNY’s best is certainly justified
on top of everything all the time,” said Schmitt
who is a 2022 WNY Softball Hall of Fame inductee
“He was great at handling our pitchers
both when we played fast pitch and modified
“I played with him for 10 years,” said John Woodfield
who was inducted into the WNY Softball Hall of Fame in 2021
“and only one time did a guy steal second
and that’s because (second baseman and 2019 WNY Softball Hall of Fame inductee) Joe Mistretta and (shortstop) Bob Burns had a miscommunication on who was going to cover
“The throws were always 5 inches off the bag on the first-base side
pick it up and throw it to first base before the batter was out of the batter’s box,” Schmitt said
“We were in a tournament and we got squeezed by the ump,” Pinciaro recalled
“Bags took off his mask and asked him where the pitch was
‘It missed by a quarter-inch.’ So Bags turned his hat sideways and yelled
And then Woodfield put his hat on correctly
and the game continued with him orchestrating it all
he got on the pitchers pretty good,” Pinciaro said
“He used to throw the ball back to Jim Brooks a million miles an hour
noted that his role was to “try and keep everybody focused.”
“That was pretty much the main thing for me,” he said
I was going to scout other hitters.”
Noted John Woodfield: “He would see the lineup so he knew where to pitch guys
He could tell by the way they stood (in the batter’s box).”
that meant an easy inning for Woodfield’s teams
including the Jock Shop-sponsored squad that came home with national titles in 1984 and 1985
“I think of all the hard work and the fun we had,” said Woodfield
including on some exceptional fast-pitch teams
“The recognition you get is the end result
… You don’t win a couple national championships without hard work.”

Asma Anwar and Shazad Malik are still searching for answers about last week’s overnight burglary of more than $1 million of merchandise from their Woodfield Mall jewelry store
as well as the future of the 13-year-old business they built together
Anwar said calculation of the total loss at Marquise Jewelers is still in progress
but the monetary impact of the theft and damage together won’t be less than $1.5 million
Schaumburg police said the overnight crime Aug
1 involved at least six people and was perpetrated by cutting through drywall in another occupied unit
which allowed entry into the jewelry store itself
A surveillance camera in the jewelry store had been covered to avoid detection
but police are continuing to review surveillance footage and other evidence from multiple sources
Woodfield Mall management declined to comment
directing all inquiries regarding the burglary to Schaumburg police
The husband-and-wife owners of the store met working together at a jewelry kiosk at Woodfield before buying and renaming it 13 years ago
They gradually expanded to three more scattered throughout the mall
and last year began leasing a storefront as a main location where they were ultimately robbed of all its merchandise
Highly visible and patrolled by mall security day and night
the kiosks have never sustained more than minor losses to theft over the years
Now those very kiosks that helped the couple grow their business are being seen as the key to its survival
We had to work up to this for years,” she said
“We’re just asking our customers to support us at our kiosks
We have the kiosks and we’re trying to rebuild there.”
Anwar said she and her husband remain in need of more information to determine the future of their year-old storefront
Answers about security are high among their concerns
and further meetings with Woodfield Mall management are scheduled
police could not say if any footage from the jewelry store camera was useful before it was covered or how they determined six suspects are involved

Woodfield Mall has to be one of the most well-known malls in our state
And those of you like me who love a good shopping trip
get ready for a whirlwind of 90s nostalgia
but I sure do love visiting the mall in Schaumberg
it's so heartwarming to see a mall still buzzing and thriving
Recently I saw this TikTok that sent a wave of emotion through me
but because it's crazy to see what Woodifeld was like and how much it's changed
in the video you can very clearly see Christmas trees
I want to both raid these people's closets and go back in time to when it was the annual "Mall Visit To See Santa."
Woodfield is usually a crazy busy place now
I can only imagine how insane the amount of people must have been when there was no online ordering
just take a look at what I'm talking about
I'm seriously so obsessed with the '90s
so I mean it when I say I love all of the clothing people are wearing here haha
I know that Christmas isn't for a while
but this video is giving me so much excitement for the holidays

Zellano Home Furniture, a recent tenant of another space at Woodfield Mall, has moved into at least part of the lower level of the former Sears store underneath European retailer Primark
Though Zellano’s occupancy includes the lower-level mall entrance to the longtime Sears site
a marketing plan shows the possibility of that floor’s 163,000 square feet being shared by as many as four tenants
Filling such significant commercial vacancies is among the goals of the three-year economic development strategic plan adopted by the village of Schaumburg last spring
“A furniture store here is a good start to reoccupying the former Sear’s space,” Schaumburg Economic Development Director Matt Frank said
“This is a good co-tenant for other retail and entertainment users that we hope to see in the future on the lower level.”
The onetime anchor space is owned by Transformco
the real estate company created by Sears’ bankruptcy
which purchased the bulk of Woodfield Mall from original builder Taubman at the start of 2013
A plan circulated by Transformco’s hired brokerage firm
shows a proposed division of the ground floor of the former Sears
with the mall entrance and one external entrance where Zellano is now
would have 68,118 square feet under that plan
Other tenants with external entrances only would have 46,854 square feet
The plan also shows a shared area of 14,617 square feet
Representatives of Zellano and Mid-America didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment
The Sears store at Woodfield closed in November 2021 as the last location of the iconic retailer in its home state
was one of the namesakes of Woodfield Mall
whose legacy has also faded from among the original anchor stores
Sears’ massive abandoned headquarters in neighboring Hoffman Estates is currently undergoing demolition to make way for a sprawling data center campus from Dallas-based Compass Datacenters
Primark opened on the more than 37,000-square-foot upper level of the former Sears store last October
Zellano Home Furniture previously occupied the space at Woodfield where Radio Flyer opened last November
Alo Yoga, Ben & Jerry’s and Gregorys Coffee are three popular brands on their way to Woodfield Mall in the coming months
They will join the recently opened Abercrombie Kids and Size Boutique stores in providing new opportunities for visitors to the regional shopping center in 2025
is anticipated to open in the spring next to Sephora on the upper level of the Nordstrom wing
Popularized by such celebrities as Kendall and Kylie Jenner
Alo offers fashion-forward performance apparel
But Ben & Jerry’s and Gregorys Coffee are expected to arrive by the middle of next month
The famous dessert brand will serve ice cream
and shakes next to Wetzel’s Pretzels in the lower-level JCPenney wing
will be next to Crocs in the lower-level Grand Court
The newly opened Abercrombie Kids sells jeans
and sleepwear for boys and girls next to Abercrombie & Fitch in the lower level of the Grand Court
Size is a store selling new and restocked jeans
and accessories that will be located across from Velocity Esports in the lower-level JCPenney wing

The recent tunneling burglary at a Woodfield Mall jewelry store adds another chapter to the chronicle of major and memorable thefts
heists and holdups in the suburbs stretching back 100-plus years
Among the most indelible are the 1924 Rondout train robbery in Lake County
the lives and deaths of Hanover Park’s Bonnie-and-Clyde-style bank robbers Jeffrey and Jill Erickson in the early 1990s
the lore of the still-unidentified Wheaton Bandit and the demise of notorious gangster Baby Face Nelson following a shootout in Barrington
But the Aug. 1 theft of at least $1.5 million of merchandise from Marquise Jewelers at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg remains a story in search of an ending
Schaumburg police said the crime involved at least six people and was perpetrated by cutting through the drywall of another active tenant
“It was done after mall hours,” said Marquise Jewelers co-owner Asma Anwar
The brazenness of the burglary is what separates it from more modern retail thievery where teams of robbers show up en masse and overwhelm store workers
Still, there’s no shortage of audacious heists in the suburbs, one of the oldest and most storied turned a century old this year
Scads of books and movies have chronicled the storied Rondout Train Robbery of June 12
widely believed to be the largest train robbery in U.S
57 embarked from Union Station in Chicago with a cargo of cash
bonds and jewels bound for Federal Reserve Banks
Postal Inspector William Fahy told a robbery crew which of the eight cars had registered mail and which numbered postal sacks should be taken
That night Willis Newton and accomplice Brent Glasscock hid on the train before it left
At Rondout — an unincorporated enclave of Lake County — the pair forced the engineer at gunpoint to stop the train in a remote spot at the Route 137 crossing
Four accomplices along with the forced help of train clerks loaded 63 mail bags into four waiting stolen Cadillacs
Newton emerged from beneath the coupling of two cars and was shot five times by Glasscock
who was said to have mistaken him for a mail clerk
the others realized Newton had been shot and placed him atop mail sacks in one of the cars
A blood trail showed someone had been injured
and authorities learned a doctor was treating someone for gunshots at a home in Chicago
Hanover Park couple Jeffrey and Jill Erickson were believed to have robbed eight banks in Chicago and the suburbs in the early 1990s
Jeff Erickson initially began robbing banks by himself
wearing a disguise of a fake beard and ball cap
while making getaways in stolen Japanese cars
his wife Jill would act as an accomplice in the robberies
The pair eventually were caught after police and FBI agents began staking out stolen Japanese cars in the suburbs
Federal agents spotted Jeff Erickson attempting to enter a stolen Mazda in Schaumburg in December 1991 and moved to make an arrest
leading authorities on a high-speed chase throughout the suburbs
ending with a gunfight on a dead-end street in Hanover Park
While she had been shot multiple times by law enforcement
an autopsy determined her fatal gunshot wound was self-inflicted
Jeff Erickson died a year later trying to escape from custody in the middle of his trial
overpowered one of two marshals he was with
stole a gun and used it to kill one of the marshals
As he tried to flee the court building in downtown Chicago
Jeff Erickson was confronted by a court security officer setting off a firefight that ultimately killed the officer and seriously wounded Erickson
Erickson shot and kill himself a few minutes later
The Wheaton Bandit has never been identified and is believed to have committed as many as 16 suburban bank robberies from January 2002 to December 2006
And he will never face any repercussions either as the statute of limitations for his crimes expired in December 2011
five years after the last robbery for which he’s considered responsible
the then-spokesman for the FBI’s Chicago office
commented at the time on the rarity of the statute of limitations taking effect in regard to a serial bank robber
Authorities were offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the Wheaton Bandit’s arrest up until then
“To have a serial robber of this magnitude commit this many crimes and not be apprehended is unusual,” Rice said
“There’s at least one person out there who knows who committed these crimes.”
Though seven of his first eight heists were in Wheaton
When authorities released a sketch after a witness reported a man acting suspicious outside a bank that was robbed an hour later
Chicago in the 1930s was essentially ground zero for notorious gangsters
between the abundance of bootleggers and bank robbers roaming the area
better known as Baby Face Nelson and at one point the FBI’s Public Enemy No
committed what is believed to be his second-ever bank robbery in Itasca in 1930
it’s his demise following an incredible gunbattle with federal agents in a Barrington Park that became his most infamous suburban legacy
Nelson was traveling back from Wisconsin with his wife Helen and fellow gangster John Paul Chase when they were spotted by federal agents hunting for them near what is now Langendorf Park
A pursuit ended at the park after Nelson’s vehicle was disabled by bullets fired by federal agents
Nelson shot agent Ed Hollis to death and mortally wounded agent Samuel Cowley
but he also was mortally wounded by a slug to the gut from Cowley’s machine gun
The gangster trio would escape in the agents’ car
but Nelson died later that night at a safe house in Wilmette
staged an elaborate recreation of the chase and firefight as part of the village’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2015
“We had no idea if anyone would even show up to watch it,” Nelson recalled
there were people there with tears in their eyes.”
