The dirt "coffer dam" keep the water at bay while room is made for the concrete dam to be built
It will be another year or more before Woodlake’s central water feature
The dam reconstruction project is seeing significant setbacks in construction following damage sustained during the last hurricane season
A media release sent late Friday afternoon from Atlantic National Capital (ANC) — the company that owns Woodlake — states that due to last August’s Tropical Storm Debby
nearly all construction that had been completed on the dam up to that point was erased

(FOX26) — UPDATE: The Woodlake Police Department says Roberto Gonzalez was found safe
A 93-year-old at-risk man has been reported missing in Woodlake
The Woodlake Police Department says 93-year-old Roberto Gonzalez was last seen near Cypress Street and Whitney Avenue on Sunday
announced his candidacy for Tulare County Supervisor
The District 4 seat is currently held by Supervisor Eddie Valero
The district includes the unincorporated communities of Badger
The cities represented in District 4 include Dinuba
Mendoza took time from his campaign and other duties to answer Visalia Times-Delta's questions about his candidacy
Tulare County needs strong experienced leadership to tackle our critical issues
and I have deep roots in the community combined with decades of public service experience
Q: How would Supervisor Rudy Mendoza be different than Supervisor Eddie Valero
but I'm here to tell you my qualifications and experience
I've been on the (Woodlake) City Council now for 16 years and mayor for 12 of those 16 years
I have worked on just about every committee on the county and regional level
Having been the longest tenured representative on LAFCO
I've served on transportation for all of my career
I've also served the county on the small business development and economic development front
I served as district director for Congressman Devin Nunes for seven years
and that gave me firsthand experience working with local
and federal agencies bringing resources to Tulare County
Currently as the chairman of Tulare County Association of Governments
I played a key role in delivering critical transportation projects across the region
as chief executive officer of a small ag business for a number of years
I have first and foremost understood and faced the challenges that affect our small business
it's a long laundry list of experience and strong qualifications
Q: What accomplishments are you proudest of
A: I can tell you there's another long list of accomplishments
I've helped to deliver over $130 million worth of infrastructure projects to the community of Woodlake
we have gone from a city of stagnation to a city of steady progressive growth
we will be delivering approximately another 365 units
having gone from stagnation when I first got elected to where we are today
we've received numerous awards and recognitions for our projects that I mentioned
Our multi-faced downtown improvement projects have delivered on a number of economic development additions
things such as Kaweah Delta's expansion in the community
we've been the leaders in the cannabis industry here in the valley
We've also achieved one of the strongest and most viable parks and recreation departments anywhere in the county that has seen remarkable growth
but we also cater to the needs of children and families from across the county
we have cities that are coming to us and bringing their children to participate in our very successful parks and recreation programs
We continue to be the safest community in the County of Tulare to live in
going after the things that we felt we needed to achieve and having the leadership and experience to go after those resources and building relationships that have fostered those accomplishments in the community
Q: What are the main issues or challenges facing Tulare County
I will continue to support our public safety efforts
I think that a community that has a strong law enforcement presence and public safety first responders is critical to catering to the needs of our community
I have long been a supporter of law enforcement
I've been endorsed by the Tulare County Deputy Sheriff's Association in the past for my city council races
I've also been a graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy
I have a strong and long-standing relationship with law enforcement and public safety
I also feel strongly about continuing my work with regard to economic developments and job creation
I am a strong proponent of finding ways to limit regulations and red tape
but also finding ways to attract new business and industry to our region that will continue to supply us with available jobs into the next several decades
One of the things that we've been very successful in
is attracting new business and providing an opportunity for growth where we almost do things on a handshake basis
and so it's easier for us to be able to attract business
That's the leadership that I wish to bring to the County of Tulare on that front
but there are other issues that are also equally important
including strengthening our water resiliency and building additional water infrastructure projects
I know we talk about that at the state level
and Woodlake is a great example of building water infrastructure projects
We've been working on a number of resiliency projects in the city of Woodlake
and at some point I look forward to introducing the rest of the county to those projects
We can continue to talk about issues like transportation and transportation infrastructure
I've worked nearly all of my career on the (Tulare County) Transportation Committee and currently serve as chairman of the board
I have one of the strongest relationships of an elected official anywhere in the county with the real estate and development industries
I've been the creator of something as simple as what we call the Tour of Woodlake
where we have invited the real estate industry and developers into our community
now we are on step to deliver almost a thousand units of housing over the next several years
you criticized Supervisor Valero for joining a picket line
he should resign from his position on the transportation authority
Do you think that's going to affect the tone of the election
but the responsibility to question our elected leaders when things are indeed questionable
I made a statement simply stating that if those accounts were true
then Supervisor Valero needed to take a step back from his position on the transportation authority
My statement was based on quite simply that Mr
Valero needs to remember that he represents all segments of the population and in this case it seemed like he was simply out there representing one segment of the population and therefore
then he would have been doing a disservice
and I am doing my best to acquaint the citizens of Tulare County with my experience
and I will leave it up to the voters to decide who would make a good representative of their concerns
Get the latest news, sports and more: Accessing local journalism is even easier with the Visalia Times-Delta app
Q: Would you be willing to debate Supervisor Valero
Q: You ran against State Assemblyman Devon Mathis in 2016
Why did you oppose an incumbent Republican
A: I have a number of years of experience in public life as well as in business
and so I feel strongly that if I have something to offer the voters
I don't have an issue with taking on the party
if I feel strongly about my qualifications
that was no different from everything else I've done in life
and that is to make a decision based on the facts
based on what I feel are strong qualifications and abilities
It was a decision based on qualifications and experience
For somebody that just turned 50 years of age
you're asking because I had some health issues in the past
but I have been under the care of my doctors and quite frankly have done quite a few things to strengthen my health
I am in probably the best shape physically and emotionally that I have been in years
Q: Is there anything else you would like to add about your candidacy
A: This is this is going to be an exciting race
It's an opportunity again for folks to get to see what my vision is
My background and my roots are deep within the county
not only from a public service standpoint but also from my work in the community as a business owner
and I'm excited to just get out there and campaign and hopefully engage the public
Hopefully people are willing to invite me into their homes and ask me where I stand on the issues
I'm just looking forward to that personal interaction with the rest of the county

San Antonio police responded to shots fired at a home shortly after 2 a.m
Saturday in the 7000 block of Woodlake Parkway
The department released information that a suspect opened fire at a home within Woodlake Estates
identified as 25-year-old Jennifer Rodriguez
inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds
Residents of Woodlake Estates said this could have been prevented
“They should have fixed that gate a long time ago,” Donna Emerson said
referencing a broken gate that would typically enclose their neighborhood
Another resident claims she heard several gunshots at the time of the shooting
“I just heard the gun like six or five times,” Sandra said
“I just thought in my mind that somebody could kill us or kill somebody else.”
During a Bexar County Sheriff’s Office news conference
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said a deputy on patrol heard gunshots and saw a vehicle speeding
BCSO said the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop
hit a pole and the driver was ejected from the vehicle
The driver, identified as 43-year-old Priscilla Gaiton
allegedly got out of the vehicle and began running away
he attempted to run again and was tased and taken back into custody
including evading arrest detention and escape from custody
it is unclear if he will face a charge with the deadly shooting that started the entire incident
Salazar said an “AK-style rifle” with a live round in the weapon was found inside Gaiton’s vehicle at the crash scene
The sheriff did not disclose who the weapon belonged to
KSAT reached out to Woodlake Estates regarding the broken gate
the mobile home park office did not answer

Workers at Woodlake Nursing Home in New Hope are starting a five-day strike on Friday
More than 180 union members at the nursing home walked off the job after filing a 10-day notice to the company to start picketing in the bitter cold
Workers say their key issue is the employer not keeping promises on pay and benefits during a change in ownership this year
along with other issues such as rising workloads and short staffing
it is difficult to give proper care to the patients at Woodlake Nursing Home
The union says there have been a dozen meetings with Woodlake since August
“We are the ones that take care of the residents without us there would be no business
the resident wouldn’t be taken care of
I believe we deserve everything we’re asking for,” said Monyou Taye
Woodlake issued the following statement on Friday afternoon:
we are committed to creating a great workplace for our employees
We are proud of the steps we have taken as an organization to support our incredible team
In the few months since the transition of ownership
or seniority and we have negotiated in good faith to reach a fair contract
To prepare for the strike we have taken steps to ensure that we have the appropriate staffing to ensure that our residents will continue to receive the safe
We respect the employees’ right to organize and remain committed to fostering a positive relationship with the union and look forward to reaching an agreement on the contract.”

The Los Angeles City Planning Commission has upheld the approval of a proposed Executive Directive 1 affordable housing development in West Hills
rejecting an appeal brought by three neighboring residents who sought to block the project's construction.
Project approvals included density bonus incentives to permit a larger structure than would otherwise be permitted by zoning
as well as the removal of any restrictions on residential density.
JZA Architecture is designing the proposed project
which is shown in renderings with a Mediterranean style design
all listed as homeowners in the abutting neighborhood to the south
argued that the covenants and restrictions applied to the neighborhood restrict construction on the project site to single-family homes no more than one story in height
They also contended that any changes to the tract's covenants
and restrictions requires approval of two thirds of property owners
the applicant argued that the condition regarding single-family homes only applied to lots 1-207 of the tract
The applicant also pointed to language indicating that the condition imposing this limitation expired in 1916
A staff presentation also pointed out that the covenants
and restrictions included a provision prohibiting sale of land to any person of African
Racial covenants have not been legally unenforceable since 1947
and are required to be removed from the books by a state law passed in 2022

ELY — A wildfire burning in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness grew to 17 acres and remains 0% contained
"Fire acreage increased (Thursday) along the southeast perimeter due to firing operations aimed at strengthening the fire’s edge," the Forest Service said
"Firefighters continue to suppress the fire

and aerial resources may be limited," the Forest Service said
Resources are also stretched thin at the national level

Several large fires are prompting evacuations in the western United States
Firefighters are trying to strengthen the Wood Lake Fire's containment line — or perimeter — with pumps
natural features and hand ignition backfiring to reduce spotting near the perimeter
The Forest Service said it's "planning for a potentially active fire day from forecasted increased winds and continued drying weather."
The island on Wood Lake where the fire started is approximately 14 miles northeast of Ely and 2 miles north of Fernberg Road in Lake County
The Forest Service has previously said the area is full of thick vegetation and spruce-budworm-infested balsam fir and that humans may have ignited the fire

The Tigers have not won an East Sequoia League title since 2019 but third-year head coach Manny Martinez believes his team might be on the cusp of a memorable year
The Tigers advanced to the 2023 Central Section Division VI quarterfinals before falling by just six points
to eventual section and state champion Strathmore
Redwood and Tulare Western have zero combined postseason victories in that same span
That postseason experience has fueled the Tigers all off-season
especially its six-point loss to Tulare County rival Strathmore
they seem to be very excited and have been working hard," Martinez said
that’s (Strathmore) been their talk since day one in February
These kids have been dedicated in the weight room and they know that’s our goliath basically
We definitely have the team this year to do it

The hype surrounding Woodlake as it heads into the 2024 season has been the emergence of junior quarterback Aldo Rodriguez
Rodriguez won the quarterback competition at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Football Challenge at Golden West
More than 20 teams competed in the day-long event
Rodriguez earned some snaps last season during his sophomore year
throwing for 98 yards and a touchdown after being elevated late in the season to the varsity squad
Rodriguez's arm talent and ability to spin the football will likely give Woodlake a viable passing attack in 2024
I think we ran the heck out of the football and this year
I'm very excited that we'll basically be able to do both
I'm gonna be confident in throwing the football this year
so we'll get into some spread but we won't get away from running the football
A multi-sport athlete who is also a member of Woodlake's baseball and wrestling teams
Rodriguez brings athleticism and versatility to the quarterback position
he's got a very strong arm," Martinez said
Woodlake returns 15 players from last year's six-win team
receiver/defensive lineman Guillermo Rosales
lineman/linebacker Dayr Salazar and linebacker/running back Cayden Wallace
Those players led the Tigers in the offseason and have been constant workers in the weight room
Woodlake hired a father-and-son strength and conditioning coach duo
who worked exclusively with the Tigers in preparation for this season
"They have just been hitting their weights," Martinez said
"They have just been working on their speed and agility as well."
Avilez anchors an offensive line that helped pave the way for nearly 2,000 yards rushing last season
Rosales is the team's top returning wideout after leading Woodlake with 18 catches for 188 yards and a touchdown as a sophomore
Lang tied for the team lead with a pair of touchdown receptions last season
and senior Brendan Doyle will start in the backfield in the Tiger's pro-style offense
Woodlake opens the 2024 season at Sierra Pacific on Aug
they feel that maybe sometimes they're overlooked
but they don’t want to be overlooked," Martinez said
I have several baseball players on my team
