(WJAR) — New Hampshire Fish and Game Department announced that an “unprepared hiker” from Woonsocket was rescued from Garfield Ridge last week
they received a report of a hiker in need of help just before midnight last Thursday
later identified as 39-year-old Edward Pimental
Pimental had taken shelter under a tent fly due to heavy winds and rain
"At that point he didn't know where he was and definitely did not have the proper gear to traverse that far," Heidi Murphy with the New Hampshire Fish and Game said
Officers and search and rescue team volunteers reached Pimental at 4:20 a.m
and he was guided back to Skookumchuck Trail
He was not injured and was taken back to his vehicle
According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department
Pimental had started his hike on Wednesday on Falling Waters Trail and spent the night there
He then decided to hike Franconia Ridge on Thursday
then took the wrong trail from the Summit of Mount Lafayette and continued towards Garfield Ridge
was unable to set up his tent and had encountered cold and wet weather conditions
"The weather actually had been predicted to be
it might have been helpful to determine what else he should have brought for his climb
He didn't do a whole lot of research from what I can tell-- from what the climb entailed and how difficult it was," Murphy said
but it's still a lot of snow up at the elevations of the mountain."
Pimental admitted he was unprepared for this hike
He will likely be billed for the rescue effort due to his negligence
"Lack of preparation is definitely a big one
in the time of year that he was on as well
you do have to show negligence which basically means that a reasonable person would have known to bring certain items and in this case we didn't find that to be reasonable-- what he brought," Murphy said
PAWTUCKET — Patrick Munger is an ace in the truest definition
The Woonsocket right-handed pitcher halted the Villa Novans’ losing streak before it began. Munger dealt a complete-game performance against Pawtucket and showed why Woonsocket is the team to beat in Division III
allowing just three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in a 7-0 victory on Thursday night at Slater Park
Woonsocket (13-1) is in the driver's seat of league play and will be a tough out in a playoff series
“I like having all the guys have that trust in me,” Munger said
“It just fills me up and makes me work even harder.”
Catcher Joe Greenless said: “We've been doing this for a long time
He can hit his spots really well and I set him up.”
Woonsocket handed Munger a 2-0 lead before he took the mound against Pawtucket and that’s all the junior needed
The Villa Novans broke the game open in the fifth inning on Jullian DeJesus’ two-out
This season has been quite the turnaround for Woonsocket after a 4-14 mark last spring
A championship run would halt a 39-year title drought for the Villa Novans after winning the 1986 crown
There was just one title handed out back then and Woonsocket beat Tiverton
“He’s hitting his spots really well recently,” DeJesus said of Munger
‘We’re playing really well and we love to see him on the mound
It’s not hard to see where the improvements have come from for Woonsocket
has allowed just one earned run with 26 strikeouts against one walk
and Braylon Guilbeault also have been excellent on the bump in limited work
“We just need to keep hitting the ball and keep playing with an intensity,” Greenless said
“Keep the energy up and keep playing as hard as we can.”
an 11-6 defeat to Exeter-West Greenwich on Tuesday
EWG built a 9-0 lead before Woonsocket got on the board
But Woonsocket’s fix was to keep the approach simple in the box
Greenless set the table with a single and Chris Bousquet walked
Greenless scored on a sacrifice fly by Noah Levreault and Munger drove in Bousquet from second on a single through the left side
“I don't think we performed our best [against EWG]
and I think today really showed what we can really do,” Munger said
We just didn't really get the hits and our defense was a little rough
Woonsocket is rocking a 179-35 run differential through its 14 games this season
The Villa Novans are also punching above their weight class with two wins over Division II’s Burrillville
Munger tossed another complete game in the first win over Burrillville with six strikeouts
Guilbeault went the distance in the second contest against the Broncos and snagged an 8-3 win on the road
Both victories help immensely in Woonsocket’s RPI standing as they have all but locked up the top seed in the playoffs
“We’ve just got to keep working at practice and keep getting to it every day,” Munger said
keep playing defense and trusting our guys ..

That’s how much longer each school day is for the rest of the school year at Globe Park Elementary School

More than 250 people signed it as of Tuesday afternoon
it’s time for us to be heard.” said parent Donavon Smith
“My daughter came here; she’s now 20 years old
She came here to Globe Park Elementary School
and poor air quality due to that water caused district leaders to close school for five days
Superintendent Patrick McGee says fixes were made and the building was then deemed safe
but the Rhode Island State Education Department told the school it would need to make up for the lost time due to state law
we then had to put a plan together," said McGee
That included three options: Add five days to the end of the school year
Superintendent McGee said he chose to add time
“Adding five days beyond the end of the school year would take us into summer vacation
Families and staff will sometimes have plans
I was concerned people would have to cancel plans or we may not have staff available during April vacation," said McGee
Parents said the change throws off their lives
“Our children and our families are being affected by this now," said parent Shawnalee Gonzalez
I think it’s really important that they remember to include the families in the discussions when it comes to major decisions like this," said Noe
that was the best option," said McGee
McGee said the roof at Globe Park Elementary School will be replaced
He said it will be paid for with state and district dollars to the tune of nearly $1 million total
District finance leaders said the school department would foot $50,000 for the new roof
Globe Park and two other schools in Woonsocket are set to be closed once a new elementary school is built
which is currently working in a non-ADA compliant space
