20184 min readHistory and competition: WykagylA visit to Wykagyl Country Club with Jon Cavalier
First, some background. Wykagyl has rich history from both an architectural and competitive perspective. The course was originally laid out by Lawrence Van Etten in 1905. In 1919, Donald Ross was brought in to improve several holes. In 1930, A.W. Tillinghast added his touch
eliminating two holes and replacing them with two holes as a part of a broader reconfiguration of the course
Wykagyl is one of the many architectural hybrids that we find particularly fascinating
One of those courses and clubs that really does feel frozen in time.”
the restoration trend arrived at the club in 2003
and the leadership wisely tapped Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw to restore their treasured layout while addressing drainage and irrigation issues
We caught up with Bill Coore to discuss the project
“I love the way the golf course rests on the land,” muses Mr
“It is spectacular land and the greens have beautiful contours
Reminds me of Yokohama’s West Course.” The C&C team performed a full restoration
skillfully balancing original architectural intent with the need to address challenge and playability for the modern game
which opened up vistas and improved air flow
It also reintroduced wind into play.” Work was completed in 2006

The club’s competitive history matches its architectural pedigree
The membership has consistently held its own against other clubs in the Met Area
as well as hosting a steady stream of events
Notable amateurs and professionals have roamed the fairways
The tradition continues with the 103rd playing of the Met Open
As one of the oldest championships in America
The Met Open is perfectly at home at the restored Wykagyl
“The strengths of the course are a brilliant routing and outstanding variety
making the 9th the last – a great finishing hole and much better than the normal 18th
the course truly has 18 holes that are all totally unique
the par-3s are exceptional – all different distances
all different types – and the par-5s are terrific.” Those who follow Jon on social media know that he is a man of both quality and quantity
that when we asked him for a favorite hole
which plays over a rocky valley to an awesome wide-but-shallow green that slopes back left to front right.”
{{content-block-wykagyl-country-club-profile-001}}
the tee shot on this hole is into a huge hill with the second shot to the reachable green being blind over the top
The green is in a natural amphitheater right at the foot of the clubhouse – I think Harry Vardon called it his favorite finishing hole.”

Robert “Bobby” Hopkins has schlepped golf bags around Wykagyl Country Club as a professional caddy making a living on bag fees and tips
Now Hopkins is demanding minimum wage and overtime compensation in a class action complaint filed Dec
for working up to seven days and 69 hours a week
“Caddies are an intricate part of the experience of playing a round of golf at Wykagyl,” Hopkins says
but the country club is violating state and federal labor laws
Wykagyl traces its history back to 1898 when golf in America was taking flight
The current course opened in 1905 in New Rochelle
and it has been the site of several professional tournaments
and remove the flag when golfers are putting
and they work until dark six to seven days
The caddy master usually assigns the caddy to two golfers for each 4-hour to 4.5 hour round of the course
and the caddies work up to two rounds a day
plus a tip at the golfer’s discretion
They are not paid for the time waiting for an assignment and they do not receive wage statements
Hopkins also claims that the club has never notified caddies that they are tipped employees
which would entitle them to a lower minimum wage
The complaint does not state how much Hopkins typically makes in bag fees and tips
A rough minimum can be calculated on the information provided but not including bad weather or sick days that would reduce his income or tips that would increase his compensation
Carrying two bags for one round a day for six to seven days would earn $1,440 to $1,680 per week in bag fees
the caddy would earn at least $50,400 to $58,800 in bag fees
Carrying up to 4 bags a day would double the income on those days
Receiving the $15 an hour minimum wage for service workers in Westchester County and $22.50 overtime pay for the 57 to 69 hours a week Hopkins says he works would earn $983 to $1,253 a week and $34,377 to $43,838 per 35-week season
After his attorney gave the country club a draft of the complaint on Oct
some members of the club allegedly told Hopkins that they did want him to caddy for them
and some allegedly relayed harsh messages through other caddies
The complaint depicts the critical statements as retaliation and harassment
Hopkins is demanding unspecified damages for alleged violations of state and federal laws on overtime pay
and spread-of-hours pay; failure to provide wage statements and labor notices; and retaliation
Wykagyl General Manager Robert Kasara did not reply to an email asking for the club’s side of the story
was brought as a class action on behalf of all 60 or so caddies who work at Wykagyl

brings back great memories of caddy days at Pelham CC in ’70s
A good round was carrying two bags say $16 then carry putters for 2 on a golf cart $4-$5 each
As you gained seniority you had less wait time
of course some days were slow or it would rain
You could pay a good portion of college expenses by caddying and learning to play golf
we were allowed to play the course on Mondays
I kind of worked my way into working in the golf shop and one day had he job to escort Gene Sarzen for the day when he was part of club tournament
Then there are the Caddy Scholarship programs and Caddy Day programs at which there were meals and gifts the members provided
As the rates have gone up caddying has become a profession
and weekend job for folks who need to make extra money like teachers
The people at golf courses who should recieve more consideraiton might be the staff who do maintenance
and website in this browser for the next time I comment

NEW ROCHELLE — Generations knew it as the home of Rob and Laura Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke Show," or
as the home of Yankees slugger Lou Gehrig and the inspiration for George M
Cohan's musical "Forty-five Minutes from Broadway."
But New Rochelle's black-and-white past has been replaced by a new reality: This week
with nine confirmed cases tied to a 50-year-old man who lives in the city's Wykagyl section
His synagogue, Young Israel of New Rochelle, has been shuttered until March 8 at the earliest; and about a thousand people his family encountered at temple — at services
a funeral and a bar/bat mitzvah — have been instructed to stay home
Mayor Noam Bramson said New Rochelle is diverse by every metric
People in the city "genuinely value and treasure their diversity," he said

The city is a mix of million-dollar homes and a dense urban center
a 35-minute train ride from Grand Central Terminal
Bramson hailed redevelopment in the city's downtown as the most ambitious in the city's history — a plan that will create new homes and business opportunities in its core while preserving its suburban character.
Wykagyl is the suburban part of that equation
The Wykagyl section of New Rochelle — which took its name from Wykagyl Country Club
the synagogue's next-door neighbor — straddles wide
not far from New Rochelle High School and the cottage where Thomas Paine
author of "Common Sense," lived during some of the final years of his life.
said New Rochelle city historian Barbara Davis, it had its own stop on a commuter railroad that stretched from The Bronx into Port Chester and White Plains
homes in Wykagyl were laid out in park-like settings within walking distance of trains
"That made New Rochelle one of the premier American suburbs," she said.
Fictional commuter Rob Petrie was modeled after his real-life creator Carl Reiner
who lives on Trenor Drive a couple of blocks from Young Israel
"There's all walks of life here from the very wealthy to the very poor
all races and it's a wonderful mosaic for children to grow up," Barone said.
Longtime resident Marie Creaturo said she has friends and relatives from California
Texas and Colorado who have called and texted her that they see New Rochelle on the national news amid the coronavirus developments.
I guess there's no where else to go but up in this town," Creaturo said.
"I used to live on Center Avenue and Pelham Road," on the city's south side
I told everyone: 'We're moving to the suburbs.'"
Davis kept herself home from her job at the city library on Wednesday
self-quarantining out of an overabundance of caution over a bad cough and cold hours after the coronavirus case came to light
I think it's better if I work from home today
They were jittery when they heard me cough
Davis' neighbors are sticking close to home because they attended services or events with the family who has contracted the virus
"It seems like every other house on the block is quarantined," she said."It's a very tight-knit community up here

Rolling fairways is still an alternative practice
When the membership at the Wykagyl Country Club
Superintendent Dan Rogers decided to roll out a new idea
“The whole fairway rolling thing came up around the time the U.S
“I came up to Smithco’s booth at the next Golf Industry Show and eventually eased into it by using their smaller roller at first
I started to notice a difference agronomically.”
and he was able to save on labor by reducing his fairway mowing from five days a week to three
He was so happy with the results that he purchased the first Smithco 15-foot roller off the production line
“We can roll 27 acres of fairways in 3.5 hours
instead of having three or four guys mow fairways on a Sunday morning
I can transfer that labor to another project,” says Rogers
“What really sold me on the fairway rolling was when I started to get comments from the membership that the course was playing firmer or faster
While fairway rolling has been a hit at Wykagyl CC
Superintendent Scott Anderson at Huntingdon Valley (Pa.) Country Club says that he doesn’t think the newer practice fits in at his course
He has discussed fairway rolling with Merion Golf Club’s Matt Shaffer
While he acknowledges it probably has a place in the industry
he hasn’t researched it enough to weigh the cost benefits
“We have a lot of straggly ryegrass on our fairway
“I assume you could get away with it with pure stands of bentgrass
If Anderson eventually wants to learn more about fairway rolling

Benoit purchased a pair of rollers and started using them last May
He admits he doesn’t have a lot of data on their effect yet because he used them sporadically throughout the season as he developed a program around them
GlenArbor’s fairways were mowed three times a week
with dew sitting on them the other four days — not a great look for the morning golfers
Now Benoit sends out the rollers to knock off the morning dew
“No one has a better-looking golf course for those early-morning golfers.”
While it’s nice to have the course looking great for the membership
Benoit’s investment in fairway rolling has had environmental advantages
“I think it dovetails with the best management practice of reducing the amount of fungicides we’re using on the fairways
“If I can reduce the incidents of dollar spot
I can reduce the amount of fungicide I’m putting on the fairway
which means I’m benefiting the environment.”

NEW ROCHELLE – It’s unquestionably the biggest win of Kyle Downey’s competitive golf career
it’s the only thing I’ve won,” he said moments after securing the 100th New York State Men's Amateur title at Wykagyl Country Club
a 33-year-old former college basketball player at Siena whose bio listed a pitching wedge among the items he’d require to survive alone on a deserted island
closed out with typical tenacity on Wednesday and posted rounds of 69 and 67 in a menacing wind to finish the championship with a 5-under total of 283
“I play in some Rochester District Golf Association events and I've come in second
“I've won a club championship against us some good players at Locust Hill
but this is the one golf tournament that I have actually won
lohud Golf Leaderboard: Keep up with all of the local events and news
There was a cast of talented collegians giving chase
but the Oak Hill member who runs a financial planning firm had the steadier hand
Anthony Delisanti (Valparaiso) and Ben Carpenter (Yale) tied for second at 3-under
John’s) and Jeremy Sisson (Nebraska) were next on the leaderboard at 286
No other competitors finished in the red this week
but if you hit it bad here it's not going to go well for you.”
The 22-year-old GlenArbor member won the Ivy League championship and the Connecticut State Amateur in 2022 so he's dealt with the pressure before
“I've been playing great all summer,” he said following a final-round 74
“I came in off a tough showing at the Met Am
but I knew I was hitting the ball well and had some good momentum
I played a practice round Sunday with one of my buddies from here
and as soon as I saw the course I knew it fit my game really nicely.”
A two-shot lead was gone four holes into the final round when Carpenter four-putted from the front edge of the green and took a double bogey
“I hit the first putt way too hard,” he added
but it went way by the hole and I missed the comebacker
I had a great shot on the next hole made birdie to bounce right back
Carpenter was one shot off the lead until a drive that flirted with the left side trees on the 17th hole forced a layup and then a bogey
Downey wasn’t giving anything back and was 8-under over his final 22 holes
“We played a practice round on Sunday and I did not like the course
it didn't suit my eye and I thought the greens were really tricky,” he said
I could go back out and shoot a 65 because I love the place
You just have to get used to the intricacies of this course and that’s hard to do
but after that you kind of understand what the what the designers intended and what the club is all about.”

the term "containment zone" had little personal meaning to Dr
a skin care doctor who has lived and worked in the Wykagyl neighborhood of New Rochelle for 23 years
That changed in an instant when one of the first cases of the coronavirus in the United States was reported in New Rochelle; more precisely
A 50-year-old congregant of Young Israel of New Rochelle had caught the deadly virus.
the neighborhood in Westchester County became a containment zone — and a national story
houses of worship and other gathering places in a one-mile area of Young Israel were ordered to close March 12 in an effort to contain the spread of the virus
The National Guard was called in to help sanitize facilities.
were we going to be able to get down our street?" Kelly said
"Was it going to be blocked off? I've never experienced a containment zone."
The phrase containment zone created confusion
the community found ways to support each other
Kelly described the neighborhood as a "desolate ghost town" and "third alternative universe."

REMEMBERING: Dr. Frances Allen, longtime Croton resident, IBM employee, computer scientist, dies at 88

termed the time as "like Armageddon." His business was down 70% to 80% and the area
The New Rochelle suburban neighborhood is back to life — at least some semblance of it
Patrons come in for coffee and bagels at H&R Bialy and diners are eating outside at restaurants around the Wykagyl Shopping Center
Young Israel congregants are holding services again and Kelly has become much busier as patients seek care.
We get thrown a lot of curveballs and we still can have a good batting average."
especially younger people who had to reschedule and modify weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs during the pandemic
Young Israel lost one congregant from the March outbreak
Most congregants have recovered or are on the mend
who was the first known case of the coronavirus in Westchester County
returned home from the hospital more than a month after he was admitted in early March
according to the New York Law Journal.
Young Israel members who attended large gatherings in late February with Garbuz were required by the state to quarantine in early March.
"We were out of daily life when other people were still in for a period of time," Semer said
"It was so bizarre; it was so intense."
Young Israel's services are a far cry from the hundreds of people that would typically gather at the temple along North Avenue. Instead
services are either held indoors at 25% the building's capacity with dividers up in the pews or outdoors in congregant's backyards
Congregants sign up in advance for services
Once there, masks are worn and no objects are shared. Temple rabbis made clear there is no obligation to attend if a congregant feels unsafe.
said the community is anxious about the upcoming holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur because there will be a heightened desire to gather
The two days are the holiest of the Jewish year
"The building is very important," Semer said
"Congregating there and seeing each other and doing things together is very important
but this community figured very quickly how to keep the community running even without the ability to be together."
said her first and only time back in the synagogue since the pandemic began was bittersweet.
"It's nice to be home but it's definitely not the same dynamic," Weinberg said
The coronavirus has been a "social plague," she added. "There's definitely a void because we're not all together."
another house of worship in the containment zone
was also one of the first religious institutions to be off-limits
The word containment was "kind of scary because we didn't understand what it meant to have a total shutdown," said Father Nick Anctil.
The church pivoted to offering services through online broadcasting
profoundly sad to celebrate the services with no people present."
as determined by physicians who came in to determine the proper spacing
"People are still wary of coming to church," Anctil said.
Also impacted is the church's popular Greek festival
held every year in September for more than four decades
thousands attend the four-day festival; sitting down to eat baklava or moussaka while enjoying Greek music and dancing
Carnival rides and games are available
as well as a large flea market.
the church is only offering curbside pickup of its Greek foods; the flea market will be held in its gymnasium and social hall on separate weekends.
The containment zone not only affected people's lives when it was announced in March, it uprooted businesses
With so much uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus
there was equal confusion on what was open and what was not.
For instance, Acme supermarket was open
district manager for Acme Markets for New York and Connecticut
said her team had to put a large sign near the Quaker Ridge entrance so shoppers would know they were
"We were so close to the epicenter that people just assumed we were closed," said Voelkner.
Acme stayed open throughout the containment
adhering to new protocols including new cleaning routines to make sure customers and staff felt safe.
"It was definitely a scary time," Voelkner said
we're probably the cleanest store on the Eastern Seaboard."
Eden Wok's Josh Berkowitz said he survived through takeout
Still: March and April were his toughest months and though revenue has increased since then
it's still nowhere near what it normally would be
"Once they introduced outdoor dining it got a little better," he said
I do feel we've been hit harder than others but everyone's hurting right now.
"We're doing the best we can but it's going to take time to recover."
said his business was also down 80% after the containment zone was enacted
even after reopening for takeout and delivery
He also had to lay off his part-time staff
"You have two choices: You can curl up in a ball and go 'woe is me' or you can take what happened as an opportunity to reinvent things."
redoing floors and introducing a new menu featuring an array of heartier entrees
What got them through: CommunityBaldassarre and others say they couldn't have gotten here without the support of the community and city government. North End Tavern was one of six restaurants initially chosen to participate in NourishALL, a city-administered program started in April and funded by private donations
The goals of the program were to enhance food security for vulnerable residents of New Rochelle
The initial pilot round include six restaurants and 300 recipients
the city's director of community engagement
Baldassarre also got help from the New Rochelle Runners Club
through a partnership with the New Rochelle PTA and private donations
enabled him to supply food to New Rochelle hospital
he delivered meals to local families in need.
He feels like he's weathered the worst of it
though he's quick to point out he could not have done so without the support and financial donations of the community as well as assistance from the government's small business Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)
"The community really rallied behind us," he said
a frozen custard shop in the Wykagyl Shopping Center
it really felt like everyone from my landlord to people who live in the neighborhood were doing what they could to help us
"You didn't feel like you were in it by yourself."
a fast casual eatery slightly outside the containment zone
Carrington was forced to close his doors March 16 and laid off all his employees. "Everyone was in panic mode," he said.
Fast forward to now: He changed his business model to focus more on takeout
he was able to hire back six. He also instituted a new app and put his efforts toward social media and marketing
his sales were $42,000 in takeout alone and he's trending toward $55,000 in the coming months
"It was devastating," he said of all that transpired in March and April
"But when a fire is thrown under your belly
you find a way to make something work and then capitalize on it until things begin to change."
Voelkner hates using the words "the new normal," but at Acme
save for those elusive Clorox wipes along with the occasional dearth of paper goods
"Everything that's available from our manufacturers we have on the shelves," she said
And the tables are filling up at North End Tavern with some diners even venturing inside on rainy and super hot days
Baldassarre has also upped his takeout business
from 6% during pre-pandemic times to 25% now
Carrington of Roc N Ramen just — as of July 27 — reopened for limited capacity eat-in dining and will be opening a second location
albeit with new protocols in place such as temperature checks at the door and a limit to how many people can be in the waiting room at a time
no one knows what the future holds and every day brings a different challenge.
Weissman of Mikey Dubbs says it's really a guessing game until there's a vaccine
is concerned about a second wave as well as recouping the loss of business considering there's not much of summer left and his business tends to be seasonal
who said his business is only at 50% of what it used to be
is also concerned and noted recouping will take time
Baldassarre said Cuomo's rules about ordering food with drinks at the bar will definitely hurt his bottom line as drinks were a big part of his business and even though he has plenty of entrees and appetizers
he thinks the mandate is a deterrent for people to come out
he believes he can hold out after all he's been through
his restaurant will be in good shape.
As a resident and business owner inside the faded containment zone
"I won’t lie and say it hasn’t been hard
It’s been hard but my thoughts haven’t changed throughout the quarantine," Baldassarre said. “This is a marathon
not a sprint and I’m cautiously optimistic better days are coming.”
It’s been at least a month since the 19-year-old from Scarborough opened a tournament with an impressive number
but he was rolling early on Tuesday at Wykagyl Country Club and easily qualified for the U.S
“My goal was to play each of the nines under par,” said Young
who shot rounds of 68 and 70 to claim medalist honors with a 6-under total

NEW ROCHELLE – In the city's Wykagyl neighborhood, joggers continue their workout routines and cars are parked in shopping center lots
But the cars in the lots on Quaker Ridge and in spaces across the street on North Avenue mostly belong to people who work at the businesses, said Frank Miceli, who runs Minuteman Press in the Wykagyl Shopping Center
North New Rochelle is eerily quiet.
Owners of food establishments within the city's two-week-long containment area — a one-mile circle in which large outdoor gatherings are banned by the state
but in which people are free to come and go — stood outside of their businesses to entice the few passersby to come inside for a cup of coffee, an egg sandwich
At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, "lines are usually out the door" of Deanna's Pizzeria and Restaurant, Mario Salvo said. Instead, the store is empty, except for the employees milling about.
"People are staying away from this area," Miceli said. "It's the busiest time of the year for me, but events are being canceled. It's killing us. We'll never recoup this money."
Salvo said business noticeably slowed two weeks ago, after the announcement that the first coronavirus case in the state was a congregant of Young Israel of New Rochelle, which is 0.3 miles away from Deanna's.
Then business further eroded following the governor's announcement Tuesday of the two-week containment area, subsequent school closings and arrival of the National Guard, called in to help the city clean and distribute food.
Salvo and other business owners say the term "containment area," the presence of the National Guard and a general fear of contracting the coronavirus are keeping people away from the Wykagyl businesses district. "People are paranoid," Salvo said. "They're afraid of human contact and getting this virus."
Themis Katehis, who owns the New Rochelle Coffee Shop in the Wykagyl Shopping Center agreed. "To tell you the truth, I had three orders today, instead of 10 to 15. Usually it's packed for lunch, but since last week, it slowed down. This Monday and Tuesday, it's been dead."
Katehis and Salvo said their typical daily business is down 60 to 70%.
"It's devastating," Katehis said. "When it comes time to pay bills, I don't know if we can.
"I have a granddaughter who goes to Ursuline. My wife and my family live with me. We count on my business," he said.
'We clean everything all day long'Catherine White, the head of the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce, said they're doing everything they can to help the businesses.
"It's not a forgotten aspect," White said. "It's just as important as the health of our residents."
White and the Wykagyl business owners in the area, especially those who sell food, stress that they're upping their already high standards of cleaning.
"We're doing extra sanitizing. We're washing our hands all the time. We clean everything all day long," Salvo said.
When asked about the fate of the businesses within the containment area, New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said he doesn't have long-term concerns, "but there's no doubt, however, that in the short term, that some businesses are suffering and we don't have the kind of resources to provide small business assistance."
He said it is one of the concerns that are being discussed with county and state authorities.
In the meantime, business owners plead with potential customers to continue to do business and don't let the fear keep them away.
"New Rochelle is still open for business," White said.

Horton faced a definite knowledge disadvantage against some of his fellow competitors
but that certainly wasn't evident over 18 holes Tuesday
The Lourdes senior made five birdies and shot a three-over 75 to win the Section 1 golf championship by three shots
"It certainly was up and down," Horton said of his round
"but I was keeping the ball in play and not making too many mistakes
And my short irons and wedges were dialed in."
Horton's five birdies included some tight approach shots
