Texas — Abilene City Council will be meeting on Thursday to discuss several items
One of the items on the agenda is holding a discussion
"Motor Vehicles and Traffic," of the Abilene Municipal code
They will be talking about making a school zone over by Wylie West Elementary and decreasing the speed limit to 20 miles per hour in that residential area
On Tuesday, it was reported that USC will be moving on from strength and conditioning coach Bennie Wylie
given that Wylie had been with USC since his time at Oklahoma with Lincoln Riley
There are many USC fans who believe that this is a wise move. Over the last three years under Wylie's conditioning program, it felt as though the Trojans were never able to match up physically with the elite opponents that they faced.
Even if moving on from Wylie is the correct move, however, the timing of it raises many questions. Why was he let go in April, following the conclusion of spring ball and after running USC's winter lifting program? Did something occur during spring practice that caused Riley to change his mind about Riley? Will the Trojans be able to get a new strength coach in place prior to the 2025 season?
Perhaps most notably, USC fans are wondering if there were personal/off-the field issues involved here. It is extremely uncommon for a staff member to get fired in April, with the vast majority of changed occurring in January following the conclusion of the season. The fact that Wylie was let go so suddenly and unexpectedly suggests that there could have been issues beyond football at play here.
Regardless of the reason why, Wylie is no longer in the building. It will now be up to Riley to go out and hire the best possible replacement for him as soon as possible.
After three seasons together at USC, their collaboration came to an abrupt halt Tuesday as Riley announced USC is parting ways with Wylie, its director of football sports performance, three days after the Trojans wrapped their spring practice.
Wylie‘s exit was “strictly a football decision,” according to a person familiar with the situation not authorized to speak publicly. Wylie, by all accounts, was well liked within the program and beloved by many players who viewed him as critical to their development. But Riley, the source said, felt USC would be better positioned for future success by moving on.
USC Sports
USC strength and conditioning coach Bennie Wylie is set to turn around USC’s culture which lacks toughness through his life lessons and football journey.
“We are grateful for the many contributions Coach Wylie has made to our program through the last three seasons,” Riley said in a statement. “He has been an outstanding role model to our young men. This is a difficult decision, but we are committed to positioning our football program to compete for national championships as we continue to move forward into the 2025 season and beyond.”
The timing of Wylie’s exit is peculiar given that USC players already participated in three months of offseason training led by Wylie. According to a source, there were no issues or controversies that prompted his departure.
Wylie, a former running back at Sam Houston State, served as strength and conditioning coach at Texas (2011-13), Tennessee (2010) and Texas Tech (2003-09) prior to joining Riley at Oklahoma in 2018.
Ryan Kartje is the USC beat writer at the Los Angeles Times. He joined The Times after six years with the Southern California News Group. A Michigan native and University of Michigan graduate, Kartje previously wrote for Fox Sports Wisconsin and the Bloomington (Ind.) Herald-Times.

Wylie was undoubtedly well loved by not only the players and coaching staff, but in a rare occurrence, Wylie was also revered by the media that came into contact with him. A slew of members from both the USC and Oklahoma beat took to social media to offer their thoughts on the situation, but all showed massive support for Wylie, who made a positive impact on them with his bubbly personality and workmanlike attitude.
Former Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, now with the Chicago Bears, was outspoken about his relationship with Wylie on an episode of the “Almost Pro” podcast last season. Williams detailed how important Wylie was to his pregame routine, and the panel echoed their love for Wylie’s energy and his magnetic personality. USC safety transfer Kamari Ramsey was asked what the most difficult part of his adjustment to USC was, and he quickly declared Wylie’s offseason workouts.

USC fans and Oklahoma fans have been at each other's throats for portions of the past three years
but ultimately both fan bases have been plunged into misery
It has been hard for either side to laugh at the other's misfortune because both schools have suffered
Coaching hires at both places have not worked out
and this is when Guthrie made an insight worth considering
"Guthrie noted that while Wylie's methods are certainly worth examining
the value and performance of a strength coach should be considered from another added vantage point
Guthrie said that strength coaching is about mindset and attitude as much as it is about teaching a certain technique in developing one's body
Because strength coaches spend so much time with players -- often more than the head coach -- they are often the central voice of accountability for football players
might not be as tough or as demanding as a strength coach needs to be
more than any side conversation about yoga or 'lifting and eating,' might be the true reason Wylie hasn't delivered maximum results under Lincoln Riley as a strength coach."
or any of the other components of strength training
it was simple: Bennie Wylie didn't generate elite results after the 2022 season in which he and Lincoln Riley inherited a roster from the previous USC football staff
the two men fell well short of the expected Trojan standard
We can admit it: The Oklahoma fans and analysts were right on this one
even though OU's football program has itself struggled mightily for most of the past few seasons

Texas — Wylie ISD approved $11.48M in renovations at their Monday board meeting
the project will focus on improving HVAC systems
and updating the Wylie West Junior High track
One of the main goals of the renovations is to get all of the Wylie West schools on the same HVAC system to improve energy efficiency
Superintendent Joey Light highlighted the importance of the upgrades
saying they've only had temporary fixes on many of the HVAC systems since the beginning of the school year
"Our HVAC controls on the west side have really aged out
We've actually seen the handwriting on the wall for a couple of years
Roofing repairs will be the most expensive part of the renovations
with the district awarding contracts totaling $8.7M to several roofing companies
A 2023 hailstorm caused significant damage to roofs at four Wylie campuses
which the district said they have not been able to address
"We've been working on this for a while
We had our insurance adjusters come look at the roof
They made the determination we had a major incident," Light said
Wylie West Junior High will receive new sod for its track and field
allowing the sod to take root over the summer
and they think they will be finished by the end of the school year
The district hopes all renovations can be completed over the summer
and Light said some summer programs may be moved to other locations to accommodate for the construction

After 19 months of court challenges by several districts
the Texas Education Agency has released school accountability ratings for the 2022-23 school year
The 2023-24 rankings are still blocked pending the resolution of a second lawsuit
No scores were released for 2019-20 and 2020-21 because of the pandemic and only partial ratings were released for the 2021-22 school year
The ratings consider three categories including how well high schools prepare students for college.
Student Achievement and Student Progress counts for 70% of the overall grade with 30% based on how well students of all economic backgrounds are successful
with 18,776 students enrolled for the 2022-23 school year and 28.6% of those listed as economically disadvantaged
WISD received an A for Student Achievement
a B for School Progress and an A for Closing the Gaps.
“Our results reinforce what we know to be true: students can attend any school in Wylie ISD and receive a high-quality education,” said April Cunningham
“Our students continue to demonstrate impressive growth in their learning and development
consistently meeting and exceeding high expectations.”

the TEA will also release revised accountability scores for 2022

NPR's Morning Edition takes listeners around the country and the world with two hours of multi-faceted stories and commentaries that inform
Morning Edition is the most listened-to news radio program in the country
does color commentary for the Delaware Blue Coats
Wylie with play-by-play announcer Owen Colwell
who says his partner's depth of information "is just remarkable." (Cris Barrish/WHYY)
Wylie attended Hartman’s play-by-play broadcasting camp in Chicago
but never a blind camper before,” Hartman said at a recent Blue Coats game
“You could tell pretty quickly he’s a very mature
Great voice and he loves sports and he listens to sports and he prepares really well
So all that information that’s in his brain
he’s able to convey it to an audience.”
Constables put out William Murphy and his two daughters during a 2021 snowstorm under an order intended for a previous female tenant
So how does Wylie describe and analyze the action of a game he can’t witness with his eyes
Wylie has a braille computer he uses to conduct research on G League players
“Then I’ll write down notes and then I’ll read over those notes before I go to the game,” he said
as the Blue Coats prepared to tip off against the Cleveland Charge
Wylie showed off the depth of his preparation
When asked at random about Blue Coats forward Isaiah Mobley
“His brother Evan plays for the Cavaliers,” Wylie says in his knowing voice
He originally did play for the Cleveland Charge
but made the move over to Delaware just this year
Asked why Mobley isn’t getting a lot of floor time this season
Wylie noted that the player has “had some injury issues,” and other players such as Jeff Dowtin and Judah Mintz “have stepped up.”
So what could fans expect to see from the Cleveland club that night
but they are 27th in the G League in points per game,” he replied
Feron Hunt is another guy to watch out for
Play-by-play broadcaster Owen Colwell tells listeners about the baskets
“Whenever the broadcaster pauses for a bit
And I’ll be analyzing plays for the 30–60 seconds timeouts
And really it’s chemistry and it’s a lot of practice.”
Colwell says he’s continually amazed by the depth of the information his partner can spout out on the spot
“The background he knows about the players is just remarkable and that adds a lot to the broadcast,” Colwell said
“There’s so much action going on that there’s not really a lot of time [for me] to talk deeply about each player
pretty much how they got to this current point
That adds a lot to the broadcast because he’s able to say it before the next play starts.”
who does play-by-play when Colwell isn’t in the lineup
there’s no way he can’t see what’s going on,” Prince said
He listens and he just goes off what the play-by-play announcer does
The gene therapy comes seven years after another research group at the university helped come up with the first FDA approved gene therapy for an inherited disease
Most fans in Wilmington’s Chase Fieldhouse have no clue one of the Blue Coats radio broadcasters cannot see
but those who know are just as impressed as Wylie’s colleagues from Rowan
One is Cleveland assistant coach Doron Perkins
who took time before the game to chat with Wylie
He learned about Wylie while watching tape and listening to Blue Coats broadcasts while scouting his team’s G League foe
“He’s right on time and he paints a good picture of the game
who has floor seats next to the announcer’s table
said he noticed the college kid in sunglasses in recent weeks and was floored to learn his story
“Just think about what he does,” Carroll said during a timeout
as behind him Wylie spoke to his radio audience
he’s got to remember so much and he can’t see anything.”
Carroll said the job must be especially hard in the G League
with its revolving roster of players who either move up to the NBA
“You have so many players that are here or not here depending on a particular day or a particular week or particular month,” Carroll said
“And to know these guys as they’re coming up or going away
He had heard clips of Wylie commenting on high school football games in Ohio and arranged for the teenager to participate in Charge broadcasts during the previous two seasons
“It’s amazing what Allan can do,” Zurilla said
“His ability to recall is off the charts.”
Zurilla was astonished by how much Wylie could absorb and relate just by hearing him
“He sees with his ears is the best way I can explain it,” Zurilla said
The BMW golf championship in 2022 was the biggest event by far
baseball and softball tourneys fuel the industry
Zurilla said the young broadcaster is becoming an icon and inspiration for people with disabilities
“He’s such a champion for the visually disabled,” Zurilla said
I can be a celebrity.’ He’s becoming a celebrity
but he’s becoming one as a by-product of really trying to let everybody know that just because you can’t hear
doesn’t mean that you can’t strive to be what you want to be
“And that’s the really impressive thing about him
He just happens to be the vessel right now that’s bringing it to everybody’s attention.”
“Just because I’m blind and I have a quote-unquote ‘disability’ doesn’t mean I can’t do what I love,” he said
“if you want something enough and you feel that you can put really all you have into it
you’re gonna get what you want and you’re gonna reap the rewards.”
So what’s next for this walking sports encyclopedia
This spring he’s trying out for Rowan’s broadcast team with the Wilmington Blue Rocks, the city’s minor league baseball team
graduate in 2028 and get a job in the sports communications field
Hartman said he can envision Wylie hosting his own talk show
“I would love to do any sports talk show,” Wylie said
“If somebody told me I can get paid for talking sports a couple hours a day
He also envisions himself doing a podcast or even working for ESPN
“I’d love to do just whatever I can get my hands on.”

The Wylie ISD School Board approved several contracts at a Monday meeting which will cost the district over $11 million
ventilation and air conditioning control systems and roofing for west side campuses
painting and flooring at Wylie West Intermediate and renovations to the West Junior High track and field
nearly $1.8 million will be paid to Paragon Sports Constructors for the West Junior High track and field renovations
Renovations to the district's campuses were approved during the 2023 bond election
Superintendent Joey Light told the board members that the track and field were in worse shape than they initially believed
they really feel like we need to start from scratch," Light said
If the contractor is able to finish the project before summer break
Light said the new sod will be able to take root in time for the next school year
Light said the initial plan to top surface the track would have been a waste of the district's money due to the underlying foundational and soil issues
Another contract approved by the School Board was the multimillion dollar project to repair the roofing for four Wylie ISD campuses
The School Board awarded Lydick-Hooks Roofing over $1.4 million to repair Wylie West Elementary
Barr Roofing over $1.6 million to repair West Intermediate and CS Advantage about $5.7 million to repair West Junior High and Wylie High School
Over $8.7 million will be directed toward repairing campus roofs during the summer
Light said this year was when the district discovered major damage to several campus roofs caused by a 2023 hail storm
"It didn't really show the amount of damage it had done until the last several months," Light said
"We've been working on this for a while," he said
"We had our insurance adjusters come look at the roof
They made the determination we had a major incident."
and it will take most of the summer to complete repairs for all four buildings
All the companies assured Light that they can start work as soon as Wylie ISD finishes the school year
The School Board also approved HVAC contracts with Cary Services totaling over $436,000 to repair systems on Wylie west side campuses
"Our HVAC controls on the west side have really aged out," Light said
"We've actually seen the handwriting on the wall for a couple of years
Light said they experienced lots of system failures and have had to come up with short-term solutions to make it through the end of the year
the district will be able to get all the west side campuses on the same HVAC system which will help maintenance with control
Although the west side campuses would be on a different system than the east side schools
Light said the controls are fairly new and do not need to be replaced at this time
Board member Cameron Wiley asked Light if any of the west side campuses would be used over the summer for programs during the renovations
Light said they will be moving programs around to accommodate the programs happening during the summer
The School Board approved over $544,000 in renovations to Wylie West Intermediate for updated paint and flooring
Renovations to the intermediate campus will be the same as the prior improvements made at Wylie West Elementary and West Junior High last year
By the end of the board action portion of the meeting
the Wylie ISD School Board approved expenditures totaling over $11.48 million for district and campus improvements

Rowan University first year student Allan Wylie helps fans hear in color
And he brings all his senses into play as a color commentator for Rowan University and Delaware Blue Coats professional basketball games
During the Blue Coats season home opener versus the Toronto Raptors 905 Nov. 9, Wylie called the game courtside beside play-by-play announcer Aidan Dougherty. The broadcasters, both active in Rowan’s Sports Communication & Media (Sports CaM) major
are among some 45 Rowan students interning with the Blue Coats this year through an ongoing partnership with the team
the G League affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers
Wylie and Dougherty are among just four who are calling games
Viscerally connected to the Blue Coats/Raptors 905 match
Wylie and Dougherty donned headsets and called plays just feet from the action
the squeak of sneakers and swoosh of the ball racing by them as players from both teams
Wylie said having never been sighted he’s always relied heavily on his senses of hearing
touch and smell and uses those inputs to tell stories for viewers and listeners
“My love of sports started when I was a baby,” said Wylie
“I’d listen to the Cleveland Indians
At eight or nine I started following college sports
My favorite sport has to be football.”
Wylie said his love of sports deepened over time and
and soon found he could distill all that information and recall it in the moment
Color commentators like Wylie provide real time analysis and background on plays and players
taking cues on the game’s action from their broadcast partners
“The unpredictability and drama of sports are part of the draw for me,” Wylie said
“It’s the possibility of a 16-seed beating a number one in March Madness or the Browns going to the Super Bowl
the small matter of not actually being able to see games is no deterrent to calling them
because there’s so much about sports that you can sense
“There’s the ball hitting the catcher’s glove
The crowd cheering – or booing.”
prepares deeply before events he calls by immersing himself in background on the teams
a computer designed for people with visual impairments
Wylie researches all manner of information
from current and past stats to where players went to high school
like Eagles play-by-play broadcaster Merrill Reese
He said the other component for broadcast success is connection with the play-by-play announcer
“It’s all about the chemistry,” he said
right) auditioned for about eight minutes before being paired as a broadcast team
“Allan’s analysis was short and simple
so there was good contrast,” he said
Wylie and the dozens of other Blue Coats interns get by working the games
and I feel like we are too,” he said
Wylie decided to attend Rowan after participating in a summer broadcasting camp run by Neil Hartman
an Emmy award-winning sportscaster who now serves as senior director of Rowan’s Center for Sports Communication & Social Impact
which is affiliated with the Sports CaM major
Hartman helped negotiate broad internship opportunities with not only the Blue Coats but the Wilmington Blue Rocks
a minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals baseball team
as well as Cage Fury Fighting Championships
“I was only a sophomore in high school but on the second day of camp, Neil pulled my dad aside and said he wanted me to come to Rowan,” Wylie recalled. “What cinched it for me wasn’t just the Sports CaM program but the support offered through Rowan’s Office of Accessibility Services.”
Wylie’s ability, magnetism and uncanny sense of place and timing in calling games has landed him in national and local media, including a piece last year in The New York Times’ sports section
CBS Evening News taped a segment about Wylie on campus this month that it expects to run Jan
Meanwhile, filmmaker Sam Russell of East Side Drive Films is making a feature-length documentary about Wylie
"We were introduced to Allan as we explored doing a film about young sports broadcasters and were blown away by the depth of his sports knowledge
charisma and skill in the booth,” Russell said
“That Allan is able to do this without the benefit of sight is truly remarkable
Our film will track Allan's journey as he pursues his dream of becoming a professional broadcaster
which he is well on his way to achieving."
Hartman said he speaks with or texts Wylie’s parents a few times per week
keeping them apprised of how their son is doing in and out of the broadcast booth
walking him up dozens of steps so Wylie could give an interview
Rowan students work virtually every position in the building including in television and radio production
“They’re given every chance to excel
and because of this experience our students are getting hired full time,” Hartman said
“he’s a young man who was determined to not let his lack of sight deter him from doing what he loves

Wylie junior Ava Cook has accounted for 16 of the 46 home runs that the Lady Pirates’ softball team has hit this season
[email protected]
the Wylie softball team had one of the top home run hitters in all of the Dallas area
Mary Stephens was a force at the plate throughout her decorated high school career
especially her junior season – one in which she not only broke the school record for most home runs in a season with 19
but also set the DFW/North Texas area record with 19 home runs
The DFW/North Texas area record that has since been broken by Allen High School alum Sami Hood
who hit her 20thhome run of the 2022 season April 29
Hood’s record is on the brink of being eclipsed this year
Melissa’s Kennedy Bradley came into last week leading all Dallas area high school softball players in home runs with 18
but just two off her mark is Wylie junior Ava Cook
That mark has come as a big surprise to Cook
considering that she is in her first season as a starter
She played on Wylie’s junior varsity team as a freshman and received limited playing time as a sophomore because of all the upperclassmen that were in front of her on the team’s depth chart.
was named the Fastpitch Watch National Player of the Week March 25 after she hit three home runs and four hits total with eight RBIs in a 21-0 Lady Pirates’ win over Lakeview Centennial on March 18.
Even though she had a great game individually
she was prouder of how well Wylie played as a team
and I just tried to stay calm and stay within myself so that I could focus on helping my team win,” she said.
Cook isn’t the only home run threat for Wylie
the Lady Pirates have hit 46 home runs.

The Wylie ISD School Board held a public hearing Thursday night following recent events involving students with weapons on school property
The purpose of the hearing was to inform attendees about safety and security methods used by the past and present and to hear feedback from parents
Associate Superintendent of School Operations Craig Bessent gave a presentation detailing the evolution of school safety following major events like Columbine
After the tragedy of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec
Bessent said the district started making improvements and strengthening safety measures on all Wylie ISD campuses
Improvements at the local level included updating school security vestibules
teaching tactical emergency response procedures and implementing an Emergency Operations Plan and a School Behavior Threat Assessment Program
Bessent shared his experiences working alongside Gov
Greg Abbott to create the Texas School Marshal Program and develop state laws that outline school safety for over 1,200 school districts
parents were able to ask questions about district safety protocols and give feedback on how they handled the two separate incidents that recently occurred
a student at Wylie West Junior High was found with a loaded gun in his backpack and was removed from the classroom without incident
Light detailed how administrators handled the situation using its pre-established procedures
More: Loaded gun found at Wylie West Junior High Monday afternoon
who told a teacher that there was a kiddo with a gun
That teacher immediately contacted the assistant principal
The assistant principal immediately grabbed the school marshal
and they went straight to that classroom," Light said
"They secured the student and the backpack and the weapon
Light later said it took about five minutes to apprehend the student and the weapon after being notified
After traveling from the high school to the junior high
Light said he contacted the district communications director and school board
notifying them of the basic information of the situation
The communications director then started to craft a statement that was "accurate and does not state anything that's going to trigger a negative situation because we've already confiscated everything," Light said
During the question-and-answer portion of the hearing
parents asked why the school did not proceed with a lockdown
the attendance status of the student involved and whether the student raised flags on Student Behavior Threat Assessment
"The main thing we want to do is get control of that dangerous weapon and the individual immediately
What we do not want to do is alert that individual," Bessent said
The district abided with the guidelines in the Texas Education Code and Student Code of Conduct
which resulted in mandatory expulsion of the student and not allowing them to return to campus
The school had not had any issues or disciplinary referrals for the student at the time
Other questions pertained to a separate incident involving a knife on a school bus
According to the district communications director
Wylie East Elementary School and Wylie East Intermediate School families were notified during the same week of another incident involving a Wylie East Intermediate student pulling a pocket knife out of his backpack on an afternoon bus route that was transporting students home from East Elementary and East Intermediate schools
which took longer to communicate with parents
The student was also not allowed to return to school
Parents were concerned about the efficiency and speed of communication after both incidents occurred
"We want to be sure we give good information
and it sometimes takes a little longer," Light said
"We tried to take immediate action and tried to communicate as soon as we felt like we had good information to share"
Further discussion took place about teaching age-appropriate lessons about safety
and requiring students to wear clear backpacks to school
School Board President Miller Loudermilk urged parents to reach out to administrators and trustees to share their thoughts and feedback about bettering safety and security for WISD students

The explosion happened on Monday, Dec. 9, around 10:30 a.m. in Charlotte’s Steele Creek division at Terry’s Marina. That’s right at the North-South Carolina line.
Officials with the Charlotte and Steele Creek Fire Departments were working the explosion-turned-fire, though no other details were immediately released from those departments.
Terry James, the owner of Terry’s Marina, told us that four of his customer’s boats caught fire from the explosion.
“It started with a boat that had a drop cord going to it,” James explained. “They evidently had a light bulb or something keeping the engine warm during cold weather. That light bulb set the boat on fire which got away and burned three more boats up.”

The boat house did not collapse and the fire was eventually contained, though James said four slips were damaged and needed to be replaced.
“I think the warning to everybody is how dangerous it is to put a light bulb under your motor to keep it warm from freezing in the winter,” James said.

Caitlin Wylie is a social scientist who understands how people work together to gather
With a PhD in History & Philosophy of Science from University of Cambridge
Wylie uses her skills and experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyze interactions between members of knowledge-production communities—local people(s)
and students—to help determine what effective collaboration looks like and how traditional power structures can be interrupted to facilitate meaningful exchanges of knowledge
Wylie’s current work focuses on interdisciplinary collaborations and community-engaged research; she recently co-edited a special issue of Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, and Technoscience, and her analysis of “knowledge co-production” in Arctic science can also be found in that issue
Her earlier work drew on interviews and site observations to highlight the contributions of lab technicians to natural history museums
Science and technology studies—also known as science
and society—is an interdisciplinary approach to understanding science and tech as work done by people within social contexts
Most STS scholars have backgrounds in STEM as well as in the social sciences or history or philosophy
and we believe that science and tech are crucial components of society
That’s why it’s so important to study the ethical
and political worlds that inform how research communities produce knowledge about nature
Now I’m studying community members who offer key expertise to environmental research drawn from their lived experiences and generations-old Indigenous knowledges
It’s very rewarding to learn about all the work and workers that make research possible
and that all of them are crucial for scientific work and knowledge
invites anyone and everyone to participate in science
I teach required courses on STS and ethics for fourth-year undergraduates in engineering
Most students arrive uninterested and even annoyed at having to take a class outside their major
my favorite moment every semester is winning them over
as they begin to understand how crucial the world around engineering is for doing good engineering
One activity that is a joy for me every semester is showing them photos of various technologies—e.g.
a circuit diagram—and asking what is social about each one
and they look at me blankly for several seconds
Then they give incredibly insightful answers
about bridges as community-connecting tools
vaccines as sources of controversy about health care access and acceptance
code and diagrams as reflections of the specialized knowledge needed to design and build technologies
(I adopted this activity from my colleagues Brian Helmke and Lisa Messeri.)

Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on PinterestShare on LinkedInCHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The owner of a marina on Lake Wylie issued a warning Monday after several boats caught fire.
Terry James operates Terry’s Marina on Pine Harbor Road and said he believes the blaze started after a person put a lightbulb under their boat motor to keep the engine from freezing over the winter.
“It started with a boat that had a drop cord going to it, and they evidently had a lightbulb or something keeping the engine warm during the cold weather,” he said a short time after the fire. “That lightbulb set the boat on fire, which got away and burned three more boats up.”
Fire officials have not yet publicly released the cause of the fire; however, James was sure the bulb ignited the flames.
“I think the warning to everybody is that how dangerous it is to put a lightbulb under your motor to keep it warm,” James said. “This is a warning to all marina operators. I’m going to put in my contract that people cannot put a lightbulb in their boat. They cannot have a drop cord running to their boat during the winter months. This could happen at any marina. It’s just lucky that it didn’t damage anymore than it did.”
James said four boats and their slips were damaged, but that the structure itself did not collapse.
He said he built the slips himself, and will rebuild them in the future.
“I just hate that my customers lost their boats,” he said. “We’re going to notify them of what’s happened here.”
Kari Greenwood lives nearby and said she first caught wind of the fire after her husband came upstairs and told her the marina was on fire. After seeing it for herself, they called 911 and ran to James’ house and talked to his wife, who told Greenwood that he was in the building.
Greenwood said she saw “a bunch of explosions” and called the sight “pretty bad.”
“I’m sorry for whatever anybody lost today
but I was extremely concerned with my house,” she said
it would’ve run up the hill and taken my house.”
but the four damaged slips were left black and charred
Firefighters battled the flames and hotspots for about an hour before bringing them under control
James has been in business since the 1960s and said Monday’s was only the second fire at his marina
