— Students and teachers in Yelm started the new school year Wednesday
School was canceled Tuesday after an agreement had not been reached
"We feel good about what we were able to bargain and compromise and negotiate," Yelm High School teacher and union co-president Tasha Johnson said
The Yelm Education Association told KOMO News the collective bargaining agreement includes:
"I think they came to a pretty good compromise
but there's still some things on the table that they'll probably have to still figure out down the road
Especially class size," teacher Arla Dahlberg stated
The teachers' union previously voted to strike and prepared for it in what would have been the first teacher picket in Yelm in decades
But signing off on a new contract means the signs will be stored
"The community support has been huge because that has bolstered our membership that tells them Yelm cares about their teachers," union co-president Kathryn Cullum stated
A Yelm School District spokesperson in an emailed statement to KOMO News
explained the district "had to make staffing changes and reduce spending "due to a levy loss earlier this year
She adds the district will continue to monitor "the budget deficit and reflect on how decisions impact students and staff."

It's a time of high angst for employees across multiple school districts. In Mount Vernon, a paraeducator's strike through a separate union for better pay and more resources delayed their first day of school
The Washington Education Association says districts are facing budget shortfalls due to insufficient state funding
making it hard "to ensure adequate staffing and to provide wages that recruit and retain educators."
The WEA confirms there are no other local unions that are planning strikes anywhere else in the state
though some unions are still bargaining with their school districts
— The Yelm Education Association and Yelm Community Schools reached a tentative agreement on a new contract Monday evening
The Washington Education Association (WEA)
the largest representative of public school employees in Washington
said no picket lines will be in front of schools Tuesday
The WEA continued to note that members will gather at 1 p.m
Tuesday at the Performing Arts Center at Yelm High School to take a ratification vote on the new agreement
"YCS officials and educators in the YEA have been bargaining to reach a new contract for this school year since June 21," the WEA wrote in a press release following the annoucement
Yelm Education Association members voted to go on strike on Sept
if a ratified tentative agreement is not reached."
Union leaders told KOMO News the last time Yelm teachers went on strike was in 1963
and there’s a lack of respect we feel going on,” Natasha Dunnam
a fourth-grade teacher who’s been with the district for 33 years
and they want to know what’s going on with money
and the teachers are looking out for kids.”
union leaders and the district have been unable to agree on a new contract
Union leaders said they’ve been asking for manageable class sizes and caseloads for teachers and counselors
with some counselors now splitting their time between two schools
“We now have elementary counselors that are in two buildings
instead of having one counselor per elementary
we now have a counselor traveling between two buildings,” Kathryn Cullum
co-president of the Yelm Education Association
“The largest caseload I’m aware of is for 800 students
which is well above and beyond what is recommended for counseling support.”
Union leaders are also asking for their state-funded salary increases
and a safety call button in every classroom so teachers can quickly call for help
“Our bargain has been about having good working conditions and student learning conditions,” Yelm Education Association Co-President Kat Cullum said
we need manageable class sizes and equitable access to resources that make it possible for students to learn
We also need to be able to support our own families without falling behind
and students who have supported us throughout this long process.”
Prior to the tentative agreement being reached
the district had said in a message to parents they would continue to bargain in good faith and are committed to resolving this as quickly as possible
asking for patience and understanding from the community while they work to come to a tentative agreement
Both the district and union officials also shared students will still get a full 180 days of instruction
Yelm will return for a full 180 of instruction
and an updated school calendar will be developed,” district officials wrote in a statement on the district website
Nearly three weeks after receiving his first FBS offer
Bol Bol announced Saturday on social media that he was accepting that offer - to the Boise State Broncos
235-pounder has given Yelm's pass rush a big boost in his short time
and that was immediately pick up on by the Broncos and California
But he chose to commit to the Broncos - the same program that teammate Jacob Tracy hs pledged to
"He is just scratching the surface in what he can do," Yelm coach Jason Ronquillo told SBLive WA in September
Bol Bol - an Alberta product - was at a WSU camp where his family met Cougars volunteer assistant Brian Foote
who used to be on Ronquillo's staff at Yelm
When the family mentioned it was looking for an exchange-student school in the United States for Bol Bol to play his senior year
Foote suggested they check out the 2022 Class 3A champions
Once counselors from both schools were in contact
Bol Bol was found a host family in Yelm - and moved to Washington in July
But this is the Class 4A state play-in playoffs, and Richland should be equally
The two teams meet at 7 p.m. Pacific time in Yelm. A live feed is available on NFHS Network (subscription only)

— A Yelm man was arrested late Monday night for assault and domestic violence
according to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office (TCSO)
SheriffDerek Sanders said the man stole the vehicle from a family member
and poured gasoline on his entire body before fleeing in the car
The man was arrested for fourth-degree assault, second-degree malicious mischief, and taking a motor vehicle without permission, Sanders said in a Facebook post
Sanders said when deputies arrived at the address near Yelm Highway SE
the man was "immediately" non-compliant and crisis negotiators could not persuade him to surrender
Deputies attempted to stop the man from escaping with "less lethal munitions" but he fled onto a dirt road in the stolen car
The man then turned around and slammed into an officer's car with a police dog inside
an impact the TCSO said was so serious that a wheel on the patrol car was sheered off completely and wound up about 50 feet from the impact point
Sanders said deputies were then able to forcefully remove the man from the vehicle and transport him to a TCSO jail
adding that he was also booked for first-degree assault with a deadly weapon following the chase
Sanders applauded his deputies for taking the man into custody without the use of deadly force. The police dog
and his handler are sore and are not injured
This is not the first time the TCSO has arrested the man
Sanders said the man was recently released from prison on a two-year sentence for trying to run over and kill a deputy with a bulldozer
Sanders said 15 pending 911 calls were left without the TCSO able to respond because so many deputies worked to corral the man at the same time as other deputies responded to two more domestic violence calls
Bol Bol
An exchange student from Canada, the 6-foot-6, 235-pounder has seized one of the starting defensive end spots as a senior at Yelm High School - and college recruiters are paying attention to his raw talent
On Thursday, Bol Bol received his first NCAA Division I offer - from the Boise State Broncos (who have gotten a commitment from lineman Jacob Tracy
"You look at him with that frame and the way he runs like he does," Yelm coach Jason Ronquillo said
"He is just scratching the surface in what he can do."

and had been a standout on the summer camp circuit up north
Bol Bol was at a WSU camp where his family bumped into Cougars volunteer assistant Brian Foote
Foote casually mentioned for them to check out the 2022 Class 3A champions
Ronquillo said the three-star prospect was behind in understanding the tactical side of football
But he is proving to be quick learned with 22 tackles (two TFL)
one sack and a pass deflection in three games this fall
and what I mean by that is even though he knew where to stand and how to align (at defensive end)
he was never given any understanding on keys or reads," Ronquillo said
"We've given him baseline defensive tactics

A family is pushing for answers after a traumatizing moment at Yelm Middle School
A student claims she got her period in her classroom
but wasn’t allowed to use the restroom as it bled through her clothes
I need to go change my pad,’” said 13-year-old Byllie Eighinger-Lemm
who told her she should get up and go to the bathroom anyway
she says school employees confronted her and told her she would need to report to in-school suspension
after grabbing her belongings in front of her class
“I knew that it was visible and that they could see it,” she said
I was kind of scared because I was getting in trouble.”
“She missed the rest of the week of school
“She got in the truck and she was in tears.”
The family is seeking accountability — and permanent change
“These are young minds growing into adulthood,” Lemm said
District officials told KIRO 7 they were looking into the incident
“We are aware of the situation and are investigating the incident,” wrote District Communications Director Teri Melone
“District and building administration have been in contact with the family
and we will follow up with them after the investigation.”
“What does justice look like for you in this?” KIRO 7′s Madeline Ottilie asked Eighinger-Lemm
“Just knowing that she won’t do that to any other kid,” Eighinger-Lemm said
“Knowing that could happen to someone younger than me… that’s kind of heartbreaking.”

FINAL: YELM 42, MOUNT TAHOMA 34
Mount Tahoma: -- Game should have been over after incompletion
then finished it off with 7-yard score from Cordero
Yelm: -- Some confusion on last MT series - Thunderbirds only got three downs
Looks like younger Ronquillo is serving in a "closer" role
Yelm: -- Cannot believe how decisively this game has turned
Myers to Jacob Ford on 44-yard catch and run
Yelm: -- That is three scores in less than seven minutes for hosts
Myers goes around right end for 13 yards and go-ahead touchdown
Yelm: -- Jacob Ford gettin in the act on 4-yard run after Tornados recover squib kick at MT 24
Yelm: -- Tornados go 77 yards to open half
capped by Ford's 51 yard scamper down the right sideline for a score
Mount Tahoma: -- Answers Yelm score in a big way
After Cordero hooks up with Quintanilla on 38-yard pass
and Myers delivered on quarterback keeper around left edge for 58-yard score
who splits two defenders on an inside route and goes 3 yards for score
Mount Tahoma: -- Cordero airs it out down right sideline
and Durr is there to collect it on 69yard score
Because heat index is over 100 degrees here in Yelm
there will be mandatory team water break during first quarter intermission
Think this will be a theme opening weekend
The two face off at 7 p.m. Pacific time. The game will be streamed live on NFHS Network (subscription only)

* WEEK 5 WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PRIMER
The 2021 Class 4A champions welcomed host Yelm - the 2022 3A titleholder - into their league (4A SPSL) with a complete-effort 57-36 victory in front of a packed house
It is somebody who might be putting up performances like these for a while
A.J Tuivaiave
who was making his fifth career starter as a ninth grader at quarterback for the Eagles
passed for 425 yards and a school-record seven touchdowns
He had 273 yards of it in a big first half to stake his team out to a big lead
Here are three takeaways from the Graham-Kapowsin-Yelm game:
Yelm has a quarterback who can make plays with his legs in 2024 with Parker Myers
/ Photo by Todd MillesHE IS STILL ONLY 14The finding-his-voice kid in Tuivaiave comes out when he speaks
But then you watch him carve up the route tree - lofty deep passes mixed in in side-arm whizzers - and you realize he is well-schooled beyond his years
Tuivaiave is the latest standout under center for Jeff Logan
who has been on staff for UW-bound Dylan Morris
Fresno State-bound Joshua Woods and Montana State-bound Daveon Superales
Tuivaiave started out just 3-for-6 before connecting with Kase Betz on a 69-yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter
completing 20 of 26 passes (and 17 of his final 20 attempts
including just one incompletion in the second half)
And five of his seven touchdowns were on passes of 35 yards or longer
including an 82-yarder to Betz late in the third quarter to give the Eagles a 50-22 lead
perhaps the most promising development for the Eagles was the emergence of sophomore running back Blake Pearson
He rushed for 127 yards on 26 carries Friday as the Eagles won the much-anticipated matchup at the line of scrimmage
And his 25-yard scamper with a thunderous stiff-arm was the key play as the Eagles marched 86 yards in the final 1:51 to seize control of this game
It ended with Tuivaiave's 35-yard touchdown pass to Mazaia Roberson with 17.5 seconds remaining for a 35-15 Graham-Kapowsin lead
"After (we lost Julian DelosSantos to knee injury)
'Who is going to take the job?'" Logan said
"And you can probably tell Blake Pearson is the kid who took it tonight."
The thing about joining Class 4A in the new reclassification cycle - there are more capable passing offense in the WIAA's largest classification than in run-oriented Class 3A
it is plainly obvious the Tornados need to shore up their pass defense
Even with NCAA D1 prospect Maurice Williams back in the fold
Yelm's secondary was constantly beaten by the big play
Some of them came on contested catches by Eagles' wide receivers
"Our plan was to get to the quarterback (Tuivaiave)
and we had a hard time doing that in a timely fashion," Yelm coach Jason Ronquillo said
and when you give a good quarterback time like that ..
Encouraging was the second-half effort of Parker Myers (13-of-22
four TDs) as the offense waits on the return of workhorse running back Nathan Ford (collarbone)
who should be back at the end of the regular season
But this defense needs to tighten things up
and our youth showed tonight," Ronquillo sWe made some mistakes that should never be made
It was a rematch of the WIAA Class 3A quarterfinals
who have since joined the 4A SPSL in the new reclassification cycle
Nathan Ford rushed for 162 yards and a touchdowns
and brother Jacob Ford tallied two second-half touchdowns to stir Yelm's frantic rally
Here are three takeaways from the Yelm-Mount Tahoma game:
Mount Tahoma's Elijah Durr could be headed for a breakout season in 2024 at cornerback and receiver
/ Photo by Todd MillesYELM HAS MORE BIG-PLAY CAPABILITY IN 2024All that NCAA D1 talent over the past few years
finally funneled through at the end of last season - one that saw the Tornados lose to Bellevue in the WIAA championship game at Husky Stadium
Three wiggly newcomers in quarterback Parker Myers and athletes Jacob Ford and Marcus Ronquillo (yes
And a bruiser with underrated speed in running back Nathan Ford
inclluding a 58-yard scamper for Yelm's lone first-half touchdown
And Myers connected with Jacob Ford on a 44-yard catch-and-run play (mostly on the vision of Ford) to give Yelm a 35-21 lead with 57.8 seconds remaining in the third quarter to cap the wild comeback
"I am excited for this year because me
and seeing him and Marky grow is amazing," Nathan Ford said
"I love watching them grow and be the next stars of Yelm football."
there was a feeling of disbeleif among a home crowd used to winning games
The Tornados didn't mess around coming out for the second half
going right to the ground game in covering 77 yards in four plays
capped by Nathan Ford's 51-yard touchdown run to cut it to 21-14 at the 9:45 mark
Then came the play of the game - Jameson Patin's squib kick
It was executed to perfection as the bouncing kick found an unoccupied space near the 25-yard line
Yelm's coveraged team swarmed the live ball and recovered it at the Mount Tahoma 24
and the game was tied at 21-21 - before the Thunderbirds' offense even took the field
"I've never been accused of not having balls
"I am always strategizing on how to be aggressive
Great job with the pooch kick into what we call 'Zone 6,' and the kids executed it flawlessly."
If the first game is an indication, three-star 2026 prospect Elijah Durr
who is currently the fifth-ranked in-state recruit by 247Sports.com
is headed for a breakout season at Mount Tahoma
He was the catalyst for the Thunderbirds' strong first half
hauling in a pair of long touchdown catches from Mikkah Cordero - and finishing with four receptions for 154 yards
Durr's first big play was on a 50-50 deep ball along the right sideline where he just snatched the ball at its highest point
sidestepped the attempted tackle and was gone 69 yards for a touchdown - and 7-0 Mount Tahoma lead with 4:34 to go in the opening quarter
waited for two defenders to commit in converging on a tackle - and split both of them for a 53-yard score
"That is what we expect," Mount Tahoma coach Keith Terry said
Elijah Durr is single-handedly one of the top three athletes in this state
