Recommendations to the South Australian Government to improve health services on Yorke Peninsula could be finalised within three months
That’s the outlook from parliamentary Economic and Finance Committee chair and Member for Giles
following the committee’s public hearings for the Inquiry on the Delivery of Health Services on the Yorke Peninsula in Yorketown and Wallaroo last week
About 130 people attended the meeting held at Yorketown Town Hall on Thursday
and around 60 went to the Wallaroo Town Hall meeting the next day
with many individuals and representatives from organisations making passionate and sometimes heartbreaking presentations.
although there were some issues particular to southern or northern YP
there were common needs expressed for the entire region
These included more ambulance and emergency services; increased hospital capacity; access to specialist medical services
including mental health; and availability of ancillary services such as X-rays and CT scans
“I have lived in regional South Australia all of my life and the core issues of access and equity are incredibly important,” he said
The written and verbal evidence presented to the inquiry would now be compiled and the committee would develop its recommendations
the State Government will consider how to respond to those.
“There’s a very clear message from the people of Yorke Peninsula that they want to see health services improved,” he said
Rachel Hagan, Yorke Peninsula Country Times
About 130 southern Yorke Peninsula people filled the ground floor and balcony at Yorketown Town Hall to witness the SYP public hearing for the health services inquiry
The Inquiry on the Delivery of Health Services on the Yorke Peninsula SYP hearing was held last Thursday
Sitting as members of the Parliament South Australia Economic and Finance Committee were
Member for Elder Nadia Clancy and Member for Morphett Stephen Patterson
The hearing went for just over three hours and
tension and anger could be felt throughout the room with many locals shouting their frustration at committee members before the hearing had begun
This frustration was aggravated by sound issues
however Yorke Peninsula Council mayor Darren Braund and Member for Narungga Fraser Ellis fixed the issue with microphones and speakers
after the crowd berated speakers and the panel for not having adequate sound
Mr Ellis said the turnout at Yorketown showed just how important the inquiry was to this community
Though the SYP was calling out for more and better health care
Mr Ellis said none of this was a criticism of current healthcare workers
and instead an opportunity to highlight where improvements were needed
but one in desperate need of a solution because we stand on the precipice of collapse as we speak,” Mr Ellis said
almost 20 residents and professionals passionately presented their experiences with the healthcare system and pleaded for change to the panel

The last picture of Cassie before her arrest shows her interact with staff at the Bogota hotel
Residents from Yorketown, South Australia, claim accused drug trafficker Cassie Sainbury
“owed thousands” in rent after she suddenly closed her personal training business
Some are saying she skipped town, a local florist claiming she “disappeared basically overnight” owing tens of thousands in debt, reports 7 News
One woman claimed Cassie owed money to several people after her business collapsed, reports The Advertiser
It comes a day after Colombian officials said they were alerted to Cassie by the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
Cassie Sainsbury had been in China and Los Angeles in the days before her arrest in Colombia and drew the attention of the DEA when her plane ticket home to Australia via London was reportedly purchased last minute by an ‘unknown party’ in Hong Kong
The last picture of Cassie before her arrest
Cassie is said to be “scared” and cries a lot as she remains in notoriously overcrowded El Buen Pastor Prison which is home to more than 50,000 criminals
she faces a sentence of up to 20 years in a Colombian jail
Speaking to The Australian
“A father’s love is unconditional
I don’t believe she was a drug mule,” he said
What parent thinks of their kid as a drug mule
I can’t change what’s happened
I just have to be here when she comes home.”
Cassie’s newly appointed Colombian lawyer Orlando Herran has claimed he could have her case ruled on in 90 days if she admits to a level of guilt in the drug smuggling
“She would have to present herself before authorities and (follow) rules of conduct and a series of controls,” Mr Herran told the ABC

The nurses’ union has called for an urgent review of patient admission criteria and security measures at Yorketown Hospital after a terrifying incident where a patient allegedly threatened two nurses with knives
Union representatives argue the hospital’s current security systems fail to protect staff
prompting calls for stronger safeguards to ensure the safety of healthcare workers and patients alike
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday
when a verbally aggressive Emergency Department patient is believed to have taken knives from the staff tearoom
Australian Nursing and Midwifery Foundation South Australian branch chief executive Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars said the nurses were forced to barricade themselves in the nurses’ station (a safe room) for up to 45 minutes until local police arrived
“The nurses’ station has only one entry and exit point with no swipe card access
instead requiring a passcode to be entered,” she said
“This delayed the time it took to access the room
meaning one nurse was forced to use a chair to fend off the patient whilst the door was being unlocked.”
was arrested and charged with assaulting a prescribed emergency worker
carrying an offensive weapon and property damage
She was bailed to appear in Maitland Magistrates Court on February 4
A SAPOL spokesperson said police were called to the Yorketown Hospital at 12.29am on Saturday
in relation to a patient who was in possession of a knife
“An officer was recalled from both Stansbury and Minlaton stations to attend the scene
with the first officer arriving on scene at 1.13am,” he said
“The hospital did not have a security guard.” It is understood police then transferred the patient to Wallaroo Hospital
In a text read aloud on Radio 5AA on November 6
one of the nurses involved in the incident said the patient had access to all areas of the hospital
“Our patients were extremely alarmed at what they could hear going on outside their rooms,” the text said
“This person had access to those knives while wandering about the hospital destroying property
“Our police are busy and serve our community well but
“While we were locked in there (the safe room)
we had to endure the perpetrator smashing on the windows and door looking to torment us and the patients until police arrived
“I’ve said at work on multiple occasions prior to this traumatic event
it will take some one to be killed before they do anything
In a letter to Yorke and Northern Local Health Network chief executive Roger Kirschner
Dabars said ANMF was deeply concerned that a patient
reportedly affected by drugs and alcohol and injured in a violent incident
had been brought to Yorketown Hospital for treatment
“Given that the hospital is staffed by only two personnel after hours
and lacks security resources to manage patients at high risk of violence due to substance use or mental health conditions
this situation poses a serious safety risk to staff,” she said
“We urge YNLHN to consider implementing specific after-hours admission criteria for such high-risk patients
along with a clear plan to transfer these patients to larger regional hospitals better equipped to provide the necessary care.”
The ANMF also called for swipe card access or passcode readers to be installed in critical areas of the hospital
such as the kitchen and outpatient treatment areas
“Members are seriously concerned that anyone can access these areas that hold objects such as surgical instruments and utensils that could possibly be used as a weapon,”
Dabars said she would raise concerns with SA Police about the time it took for police to attend the incident
YNLHN chief executive Roger Kirschner did not respond to specific questions from the YP Country Times about whether the board had discussed changing admission criteria to Yorketown Hospital when it met on November 6
“We are always open to feedback from stakeholders and are currently reviewing the security measures at all our sites,” Mr Kirschner said in the statement
“An expansion of swipe card access at Southern Yorke Peninsula Health Service is being assessed along with other infrastructure upgrades.”
Yorketown Hospital administration approached the Yorke Peninsula Health Advisory Council chair earlier this year for funding assistance to upgrade the hospital’s security system
YPHAC chair and Member for Narungga Fraser Ellis said the approach was made because staff felt unsafe due to increasing instances of violent patients
“Despite the completely legitimate concerns from staff the HAC resolved
that providing a safe workplace is very much a job for the employer
“We communicated as such to YNLHN on August 12 and urged them to fund and install the upgrade as a matter of urgency
and a response received on October 11 indicated this request was under consideration
Mr Ellis said he had contacted Yorketown Hospital and police following the incident and written to Health Minister Chris Picton
calling for the upgrade to be installed as soon as possible
He said he intended to ask Police Minister Dan Cregan about the reported police response time in State Parliament this week.
Nurses involved in a violent incident at Yorketown Hospital on Saturday
were initially delayed from making a statement to police
the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Foundation has said
Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars said it was disappointing a directive had been issued to staff to wait for approval to make a statement to SA Police
She said the ANMF had previously raised the issue with YNLHN
“If a worker has suffered an assault
the reporting of that assault including the provision of witness statements regarding the assault
is directly related to the mitigation of health and safety risks and is therefore required to be authorised under law,” she said
Dabars said the two nurses received messages from YNLHN on Tuesday evening
informing them they had been granted permission to make statements
They then arranged to attend the local police station on Friday morning
Mr Kirschner said both employees had now provided statements to police
but he did not respond to questions from the YP Country Times about the delayed approval for them to do so.

Yorketown is a small rural service centre which is literally surrounded by saltpans
The area around Yorketown was settled in the late 1840s by a group of farmers eager to exploit the region's grain growing potential
They planted crops of barley and wheat and grazed sheep
even though the size of the community was still very small
the town was laid out and blocks of land were sold
In this year the Melville Hotel was completed and by 1876 the attractive Yorke Hotel and the Methodist Church had both been completed
The extraordinary number of salt lakes in the area persuaded a local wit to advocate that the town be renamed Salt Lake City but it failed to capture the local imagination
The town still bears the name of the surveyor who laid it out in 1872
Salt Lakes The main attraction in the area are the extraordinary salt lakes
At various times they have been mined for their salt
Like many salt lakes in wheatbelt areas they are vulnerable to pink algae and consequently can acquire a gentle pink hue in certain seasons and under specific climatic conditions
is a fine example of the sense of prosperity which was common when the new wheatbelt towns were established
Columba¹s Catholic Church Built in 1903 this handsome church is another example of the prosperity which characterised the early history of the town
Granite Outcrops Travel out of Yorketown on the Stansbury Road for about 10 km and you will see a parking bay
Nearby are two large and unusual granite rocks known as the Bear Rock and Clown Rock

Stephen Wade MLC on Tuesday visited local hospitals on Yorke Peninsula for meetings with local medical practitioners and stakeholders and the value of such direct contact cannot be overstated
Specific topics discussed in detail included staffing at Wallaroo hospital and the current locum model and associated admission procedures for both public and private beds
rural training pathways for medical students
the ongoing issue of the need for extended medical imaging services
and the plans for the imminent upgrade of the Yorketown Hospital theatre and recovery suites
Following meetings with representatives from Kadina Medical Associates
the Northern Yorke Private Hospital and Copper Coast Council
the Minister was pleased to launch a new rural maternity care trial program at Wallaroo Hospital which was clearly welcomed by the gathering of staff and local parents and babies in attendance
The day also afforded the first opportunity for the Minister to meet with members of the newly formed Yorke and Northern Local Health Network Board which commenced operation in July
the Maitland Hospital the venue for an informal talk with board representatives Julianne Badenoch
Liz Malcolm and John Voumard and Director of Governance and Leadership Support Leanne Stringer
with Yorke Peninsula Council Mayor Darren Braund
viewed the outdated surgical facilities that are soon to be upgraded and discussed the specific building plans due to go to tender
with contractors to be appointed by October and construction to start in December
The commitment I made during the election campaign for improved services at Yorketown Hospital was very important to me and the tender process for this major work signals the first step in delivering those improvements
DON Sharon Godleman and Nurse Unit Manager Simon Taylor guided the tour and reported staff had had input into the final designs
further sharing with the Minister the importance of the works planned that will ensure the hospital can continue to provide vital endoscopy procedures such as colonoscopies
The Minister also toured the Accident and Emergency department
recognised as the next area in the hospital that requires investment given the significant surges in demand on its resources that is experienced over summer when staff manage an influx of an estimated 50,000 visitors on top of workloads servicing the region’s permanent residents
The Marshall Liberal Government committed $605,000 to Yorketown Hospital in the 2018-19 State Budget to upgrade the surgical facilities and employ more staff
and to complement this investment further allocated $303,952 in the 2019-20 Budget to seal the Yorketown airstrip to ensure medical retrieval services can operate in all weather conditions
Visitors to the Yorke Peninsula’s spectacular Pink Lake will soon be able to enjoy its beauty from a specially designed viewing platform
which has been shaped as a ‘Y’ to represent Yorke Peninsula and Yorketown
will allow visitors to safely walk out onto the lake
The stem of the platform extends 75 metres into the lake
with each arm extending a further 25 metres
“The Y shape will allow photographers to stand on one arm and take photos of people standing on the opposite arm,” said Yorke Peninsula Council Mayor
giving the impression of visitors standing on water
It curves towards the shoreline where a walking trail is currently being installed
“While the lake surface may appear sturdy enough to stand on
those who venture out into the lake and off the designated walkway will soon find themselves ankle or knee-deep in black mud – the walking trail and Y platforms are much better options,” he said
a self-drive tour that showcases the region’s pink
The viewing platform was funded through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program

The grant funding the murals seeks to boost tourism in regional communities that were effected by the 2019 bushfires
The areas included in the “mural trail” are Yorketown
and the other two are commencing soon.
Each mural concept is intended to represent the history of the region
The Coobowie mural by artists Creature Creature and Jason Parker depicts the area’s distinctive bird life over water
paying tribute to the meaning behind the area’s aboriginal name
and Dylan Butler are working on the Edithburgh water tower
which focuses on ocean imagery such as multicoloured cuttlefish
