certainly with Coach (Matt) Moulton and the guys who came before him
that maybe just needed a new voice to lead them to that next level
From early April: Justin Ullom resigns after three seasons at Muncie Central
Ullom brings eleven seasons of head coaching experience to Yorktown between Monroe Central and Muncie Central
He guided Monroe Central to a 119-72 record over eight seasons

Read the full emergency order
Recreation and Conservation Commissioner Kathy O’Connor has issued an Emergency Order in an effort to expedite the opening of Playland Amusement Park for the 2025 operating season
According the order: “The Emergency order will allow the County to hire a company to inspect specific rides
secure all necessary supplies and parts to operate the rides
Standard's abrupt departure leaves the County with little time to properly carry out all of this work
Standard left little or no spare parts in inventory
in some cases did not properly winterize rides and a number of rides were left dis-assembled.”
the Parks Department determined that competitive bidding could not be pursued
to carry out the necessary emergency work which includes inspecting
replacing and maintaining these specific rides and procuring necessary supplies and parts
The County owns 11 rides that were manufactured by Zamperla and a number of other rides manufactured by a company that is no longer in business

Shortly after the Battle of Midway, an already crippled USS Yorktown was hit by a torpedo attack from a Japanese submarine. The damage was significant enough that the US Navy deemed repairs impossible and the ship sank in the Pacific
The sunken aircraft carrier was rediscovered in 1998 by oceanographer Robert Ballard
The NOAA's exploration team explored the ship's hangar deck and discovered a mural, titled "A Chart of the Cruises of the USS Yorktown," painted on the wall of one of the ship's elevator shafts.
Before the explorers rediscovered the painting, it had only been partially visible in historical photos of the ship.
The 42 by 12-foot mural displays a world map that tracks the various voyages the ship undertook during its time in service.
The hand-painted artwork wasn't the only surprise awaiting the explorers in the depths of the Yorktown; the NOAA team also found an old car in the aft hangar of the ship.
According to NOAA, the vehicle is a 1940-1941 Ford Super Deluxe "Woody," colored black. The words "SHIP SERVICE_NAVY" are written on part of its front plate.
NOAA researchers believe the car may have been used by Rear Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher, Captain Elliott Buckmaster, or other crew for conducting business while the ship was in foreign ports.
The car's existence on the ship is something of a curiosity. In May 1942, the Yorktown was severely damaged by Japanese aircraft in the Battle of the Coral Sea, after which it sailed back to Hawaii, where it stayed in dry dock at Pearl Harbor for two days for rapid repairs before it went to participate in the Battle of Midway.
During the battle, the Yorktown was again damaged by Japanese aircraft, and developed a list to its port side — meaning the ship began to lean to one side — at which time the crew jettisoned much of its heavy equipment, like aircraft and anti-aircraft guns.
But they didn't jettison the car. The reasons for keeping the car onboard the ship at a time when even anti-aircraft guns and airplanes were being tossed over may remain a mystery.
The NOAA's dive also found the first underwater examples of the aircraft on the Yorktown that had been jettisoned during the Battle of Midway.
While exploring a heavily obstructed elevator shaft, the NOAA's remote vehicle entered a hangar and found the remains of at least three Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers.
Records from the battle note that the Yorktown recovered a pair of aircraft from the USS Enterprise that had been barely damaged. The aircraft were moved down onto a hangar deck and later suffered fire damage when Japanese bombs hit the Yorktown.
Research is still ongoing to determine if the airplanes found in the hangar are those recovered from the Enterprise.
Other parts of various aircraft were also located among the wreckage.
In addition to the remnants of battle, the NOAA may have also discovered a new species of jellyfish. The dive team encountered a small, bright red and white jellyfish, though it is unclear if it's a new or an existing species.
Tubeworms and anemones were also found attached to the ship's hull. Sunken ships often provide structures for undersea life to attach and grow onto.
In 2023, the site of the Yorktown's wreck was designated as a Site of Extraordinary Character by the US Navy.

With seven NFL seasons now complete, M.J. Stewart is busy preparing for his next pro campaign with the Houston Texans this coming fall
This will be the fourth football season with Houston for the 5-foot-11-inch, 205-pound safety, a 2014 graduate of Yorktown High School where Stewart was a standout runningback
The time and year by year have slipped by so fast,” Stewart told ARLnow
Stewart has been a valuable member of special teams and the defensive secondary for three teams — Houston
the Cleveland Browns and initially the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
was drafted out of the University of North Carolina by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft
He is the lone player from Yorktown High School to have a prolonged professional football career
Stewart said he is not surprised he has stuck in the NFL

Stewart played his freshman high-school football season at private school Bishop O’Connell in Arlington
Stewart will be in Arlington for his free MSMJ Youth Foundation community event on Saturday, May 17 from noon to 4 p.m. held at High View Park in the Halls Hill neighborhood
The park is the site of the annual Halls Hill Thanksgiving Day “turkey bowl” neighborhood football game that has been played since the 1950s
The foundation event will include a celebrity kickball game
an autograph session and other activities for youth and adults
“We just like to bring the community of Arlington together a little on that day so old friends can come back and have a chance to see each other,” Stewart told ARLnow
Stewart also commented on the recent retirement of Hanson as Yorktown’s longtime football coach
“He is like a superman when it comes to coaching,” he said
He had a legendary and great career as a coach.”

Miraggio Mediterranean Restaurant, which first opened in Yorktown Heights in 1992 but closed in 2018
Diners who've been before will find the same basic layout — bar to the right; wood-burning pizza oven just beyond it
open kitchen in the back — but with a whole new look
"We completely gutted the place," said owner Par Shakiban
with a family-style menu focused on Northern Italian fare
albeit with newly added Mediterranean accents
There's still a wood-burning oven for pizzettes plus plenty of space for large groups and families — almost 11,000-square-feet to be exact
Diners will also notice the newly added "Mediterranean" name to the signage outside
(The restaurant had previously been Miraggio's.)
Of interest: Is there an oversaturation of Italian restaurants in Westchester?
a passionate restaurateur who's been in the business since 1968
said it was mainly due to "popular demand."
The dining landscape has changed in the seven years Miraggio's was closed with a lot more development (Triangle Plaza
is in the midst of a renovation) with more demographics and a more diverse clientele
As someone who's built 22 restaurants since starting his career
Shakiban is excited to bring his concept back to where he started
Many longtime Westchester residents may know him from his days years ago at Par's Steakhouse in Armonk
Rye and White Plains (since closed); Eclisse Restaurant in Rye
New Canaan and Stamford (still open); and Medi-Bistro in White Plains
Shakiban also owns Harbor Point Organic Market in Stamford
who has more than 18 years experience cooking in a variety of New York City and Westchester kitchens
Sample menu items include Chicken parmesan
Linguine con Gamberi (linguine with shrimp) and pasta with shrimp in a garlic white truffle sauce
"We want it to be like when you go to your grandmother's on Sunday and everyone digs in," he said
He also emphasized the restaurant's concentration on freshness and "unique ingredients along with affordable prices and a nice ambiance."
