the superintendent has been placed on administrative leave
There is has been no confirmation as to if this administrative leave will be paid or unpaid

a former superintendent of the High School
will become the new superintendent for the next school year
ORIGINAL: The Hot Springs School District Board of Directors has called a special meeting for Friday afternoon
giving the public only hours of prior notice
The meeting, scheduled for 5 p.m., comes just a day after postponing a vote on Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Nehus' future in the district.
Thursday's meeting was held in regard to the recent arrest of Zachary Nehus
upset about the superintendent's husband being arrested this week for a parole violation
He was on parole following his 2016 conviction on 10 counts of distributing
He was arrested after a sex offender compliance check was done at their home and evidence was found to arrest him for violating the terms and conditions of his parole
According to the Superintendent's contract
Stephanie Nehus is paid an annual rate of $192,610
The contract also outlines that "The Board shall have the right to terminate this Agreement for good cause." If the Board decides to terminate
they will then give the Superintendent written notice and give Nehus the opportunity for a hearing
Stephanie Nehus was in for a salary raise after the Board voted to approve a 4% across-the-board raise
If the new contract is signed at the end of the school year
the Superintendent's salary would be raised to an annual rate of $201,277
The current contract is set to expire on June 30
ZACHARY - Zachary voters rejected changes to the city's home rule charter that would set residency requirements for government officials and set out budget deadlines
The new charter would've set residency requirements for council members and say city department heads don’t have to live in the city.
It also set out budget deadlines and says the city cannot agree on a new budget
the existing one would remain in effect but at a level that is 10 percent lower
Unofficial results showed the vote failed with 60.38% of the vote
— The second defendant sentenced in the 2023 Jefferson County rock-throwing incident that killed 20-year-old Alexa Bartell will spend 32 years in prison
Judge Christopher Zenisek handed down Zachary Kwak's sentence Friday in a Jefferson County courtroom just a day after Nicholas Karol-Chik was sentenced to 45 years and 8 years mandatory parole for his role in the crime.
The sentence includes 27 years for first-degree assault in connection to Bartell's death in addition to 5 years for second-degree assault and 8 years
Kwak and two other accomplices, Nicholas Karol-Chik and Joseph Koenig – all three teenagers at the time of the incident, were initially charged with first-degree murder for the April 19
who died after a landscaping rock was thrown at her car
Kwak agreed to a plea deal in May of 2024 and was only convicted of first and second-degree assault and attempted second-degree assault
He said he didn’t throw any rocks that night but acknowledged he acted in a way that created a grave risk of death
telling the court that Koenig was the one who threw the fatal rock that also caused Bartell’s vehicle to leave the road and crash
the trio took photos of the scene without checking on Bartell
Describing Bartell as "the most polite person to strangers"
Bartell's brother spoke about the immense pain he has have felt over the last two years while reading a note he wrote to his sister
"The pain of your loss may never fade but I hold onto the beautiful memories we made together," he read
"Your memory remains a beacon in my life — I take solace you found eternal peace in Heaven."
spoke of the bond she had with her older brother and the many missed moments and milestones since her death
always looking up to him — always wanting to be a part of his world," Kelly Bartell told the packed courtroom
"Every morning I wake up and relive the same horrible nightmare
I find it difficult to feel joy without also feeling guilt as if any happiness I experience is wrong — like the world has no business moving on without my beautiful daughter."
addressed Bartell family on the loss of Alexa and did not ask the judge for leniency
"I make no request pertaining to sentencing or punishment
we are at your mercy — this court's mercy."
Zachary Kwak took to the podium to express remorse for what he said were his actions and for handing the rocks to the other defendants
"I knew what they were doing had the potential to cause harm and it was dangerous and yet I did it anyway," said Kwak
"I feel truly crippled for the remorse I feel for what happened and the role I played in it
I let everybody down in the most devastating way."
Koenig was found guilty of first-degree murder and several other charges, including attempted murder, after jury deliberations Friday following an 11-day trial.
He is facing life in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced in June.
Karol-Chik, 20, was granted a plea deal as well and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder as part of the agreement.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday and is facing between 35 and 72 years in prison.
Attorneys for the three men argued that they were seniors in high school with nothing else to do and the trio acted without intent to harm, but prosecutors dismissed this claim.

A school board in Arkansas put the superintendent on leave after her husband
a former teacher and registered sex offender
The Hot Springs School District placed Dr. Stephanie Nehus on administrative leave Friday after mounting public calls for the superintendent to resign after her husband, Zachary Nehus, was arrested on Tuesday, KARK 4 reported
in 2016 for possession of sexually explicit images of children
he’s being held in Garland County Detention Center for allegedly violating his parole
The school board had opted to keep the superintendent in her post on Thursday
Her husband was arrested in 2014 on more than two dozen counts of child pornography
He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 years of probation
His parole violation involves “evidence” that was found at his home relating to his original conviction during a routine check by police
But the board reversed course after parents expressed outrage, placing Nehus on leave and naming Becky Rosburg, the assistant superintendent, as interim superintendent until the end of the school year. Dr. Mike Hernandez will take over from then until June 2026, THV11 reported.
Parents stood outside the school board’s meeting calling for Nehus to be removed. One parent, captured by THV11, held up a sign that read: “Integrity in schools starts at the top!”
According to the school district's website, Nehus obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Henderson State University and her Doctor of Education degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Before becoming superintendent, she worked as a math teacher, assistant principal, and principal at schools in the state.
The website says she has been with the Hot Springs School District for 15 years and was named the Arkansas Rural Education Association Superintendent of the Year for 2021-2022. Nehus and her husband have three children together.
“This time, parents are finally feeling heard,” Sara Jeffers, a parent, told KARK. “I definitely do feel like people are finally listening to us.”
However, the issue isn’t totally resolved, as some parents are still frustrated by the lack of transparency regarding the terms of her leave.
“While I’m happy at the moment that some kind of action has been taken, there are so many more layers of corruption,” Jeffers added. “I still feel defeated, and I’m not going to not feel defeated until she is gone.”
“There was a lot of questions as far as if it's going to be a paid administrative leave or it's not,” Emilie Boyett, another parent, told THV11.
After her appointment, Rosburg sent out a statement, obtained by the outlets, to the Hot Springs community.
“Our students, families, and staff deserve consistency during this time of transition, and I am committed to honoring the work already underway while ensuring our continued progress. I, with the help of the entire administrative team, will work diligently to renew your trust and support in our District,” she said.

Zachary voters rejected an amendment to the city’s home rule charter that would have tightened council member residency requirements and loosened such requirements for department heads
The measure failed Saturday by a margin of 60% to 40%
The city last amended its home rule charter in 2010
Mayor David McDavid called the results "disappointing" but looked toward the future
"We're going to continue working hard for the citizens of Zachary to make this a great place to live
Under current ordinances, council members may move outside their district and continue to hold office up to 180 days after their residency changes. The proposition would have eliminated that provision
the proposed amendment would have removed a requirement that government department heads live within the city’s boundaries
It would also have adjusted the city’s budget procedures
reducing budget proposal timelines from 60 to 45 days
Another proposal would have made 90% of the previous year’s budget the default should the council not approve a new budget

was arrested at his home on Tuesday after investigators "discovered enough evidence of crimes related to the aforementioned offense to place Mr
Nehus under arrest for violating the terms and conditions of his parole"

Police say they have opened an investigation and will release more information as it becomes available

is the Outstanding Graduating Student in the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD)
He is a secondary education major with a concentration in social studies and a minor in history
a Maine Seacoast Mission scholar and a Galen Cole Family Foundation scholar
Wentworth served as president of the University of Maine chapter of the Student Maine Education Association for the past two years
He was also an undergraduate resident assistant with Residence Life
working with the communities in Hart Hall in the 2023-24 academic year and in Hancock Hall this year
Wentworth completed his student teaching placement at Orono High School with mentor teacher Shana Goodall
a two-time alumna of COEHD and the 2019 Maine History Teacher of the Year
Wentworth plans to pursue a master’s in student development in higher education at UMaine
while working as a graduate assistant in COEHD’s Advising Center
I chose UMaine for its tight-knit community
encouraging and inspiring people who cultivate a deeply connected and supportive environment
and every visit to UMaine before I started my college career here reinforced my desire to be part of such a community
or scholarly pursuits in which you have participated
How have they prepared you for future opportunities in your chosen field
I completed my student teaching internship
which was a full-time placement at a local high school
This intensive internship has prepared me for my future career in education
The UMaine faculty and cooperating teachers have been nothing short of amazing
This internship allowed me to put my classroom knowledge into practice
deepening my learning and confirming my passion for education while becoming a part of a local school community
Have there been other students who supported and inspired you or exposed you to something new
other students—whether they are my classmates
or fellow members of the clubs I’m involved in—inspire me to create change within our community and state
My peers who are student teaching have inspired me to improve this experience by advocating for a paid student teaching internship
Their passion for education and the struggles they face in this unpaid role have exposed me to the challenges students pursuing careers in education encounter
I’ve worked to raise awareness of these issues
and I hope to create meaningful change in this area
or role model who made your time at UMaine better
But my student teaching mentor teacher Shana Goodall has made the most significant impact on my education
a dedicated high school social studies teacher and a mentor for future educators like myself
Her guidance has shaped me and prepared me for the next stage of my life and career
The amount of time she consistently dedicates to supporting her students
fellow staff and future educators speaks for itself
She embodies everything I admire in an educator and hope to be as a future teacher
The mentorship she has provided has been pivotal to my time at UMaine
and it is something I will forever be grateful for
What has coming to UMaine enabled you to explore beyond academics
UMaine has allowed me to explore my interests in public education beyond the classroom
through extracurriculars like the Student Maine Education Association (SMEA)
This club has given me the opportunity to learn about organized labor organizations such as the Maine Education Association
I began to understand public education more holistically and explored the politics of education
What experiences have you had at UMaine that really highlight the ingenuity of Mainers
One experience that highlights the ingenuity of Mainers occurred when my classmates in the College of Education and Human Development came together to start a food pantry for fellow students in field placements who were struggling financially
Their quick action shows the compassion and ingenuity of Mainers
Did you have an experience at UMaine that shaped or changed how you see the world
Being a resident assistant and helping students navigate UMaine as first-years and upperclassmen has truly opened my eyes to how far a little help can go in ensuring someone’s success
Residents come to me daily with questions about dining halls or roommate issues
residents have come to me with serious concerns about their academics and feel like they need to end their education and go home
I’ve had the honor of helping them access the resources they need to succeed
such as Student Accessibility Services or tutoring
I’ve sat with students to help them write an email to their professor asking for help
These experiences have shown me the power and importance of being there for your community
deepening my passion for helping those on an educational journey
Maine’s harsh winters and tight-knit communities embody resilience
The UMaine community always comes together to support each other
Students are encouraged to embrace this resilience
learning to adapt and thrive in a world that is constantly changing and often uncertain
UMaine reminds us that we are resilient together
The strength of the UMaine community and everyone within it is evident in our success in the classroom
I could not be more proud to be part of this resilient community
What are your plans for after you graduate
I will return to the University of Maine to pursue a Master of Education in Higher Education and will take a graduate assistant position in the College of Education and Human Development Advising Center
I’m excited to continue my education and diversify my skill set in the education field
I’m especially excited to help cultivate the next generation of educators so early in my career
It’s a way I never imagined I’d be able to give back to UMaine

That class greatly increased my ability to speak to people
which is a skill that I needed to improve and now I have much less issues talking and presenting in front of people
Hensel: The experience that has helped me most for what's next in my life is the workload of college
It made me learn how to plan out my week and create a schedule on what assignments and projects to do first
It has overall made my life much more organized since that's what you need to do in order to succeed
Assistant Teaching Professor of English Paul Perrone
has greatly supported me in determining my time here at Penn State and my future ambitions
He made my time here run so much smoother and granted me opportunities that I never would have gotten otherwise
I was lost arriving here my first semester and Perrone steered me in the direction that I was trying to go but couldn't figure out properly
and they were some of the best times I've had here at Penn State
each one is unique and entertaining that could even lead to new friendships and connections
Stay tuned for as we continue to highlight our student marshals for their outstanding accomplishments

leaving a void that his lively spirit once filled
it's perfectly Zach that his departure has us all wishing for a bit more time with him
his vibrant life was cut short by a driver distracted by texting
Our hearts are heavy with the loss of such a spirited soul
but we find comfort in knowing he continues to spread his humor and probably teaching the chorus his favorite songs wherever he is now
You knew you were in for a treat from the moment you met Zach
He had an infectious smile and a goofy personality that turned ordinary moments into laugh-out-loud memories
Whether delivering a perfectly timed movie quote or pulling a ridiculous face
he had a gift for lighting up every room he entered
Zach took silliness very seriously—if there was an opportunity for a joke or prank
he seized it and then flashed that signature grin to ensure you were laughing with him
Perhaps the most infamous of Zach’s antics was his unique way of showing affection: if he loved you
he likely mooned you at least once — yes
"I love you to the moon and back," quite literally
It’s a fond memory that brings a smile (and perhaps a head shake and eye roll) to those lucky enough to experience his full-mooned greeting firsthand
Zach’s interests were as eclectic and vibrant as he was
Some of his favorite passions included:
Singing – Whether he was on a stage or just in the shower
and every dinner prep was his personal headline show
All Things Nerdy – Zach could marathon an entire anime series in a weekend and drop Harry Potter references into casual conversation
he’d happily explain it with enthusiasm
Tattoos – He loved the art of American classic tattoos and treated his skin like a living canvas
Every tattoo had a story (or at least looked extremely cool)
and he wore each with pride as if they were merit badges from a life full of adventure
Online Gaming – To say Zach loved online gaming is an understatement
He didn’t just play – he built a community of friends
His gamer pals knew him as the wise-cracking
loyal teammate who could lead a daily virtual raid and keep everyone laughing in the chat by night
Late-night gaming sessions won’t be the same without hearing "Dean-o" cackling through the headset until the wee hours of the morning
Zach worked in environmental services and restoration at OnSite — a job he genuinely loved (mainly because it meant spending time with people he cared about)
work was just another opportunity to be around friends and spread laughter
He often said his coworkers were like family
but not without plenty of jokes to keep spirits high
His OnSite crew will remember how he could lighten the mood in the toughest moments and turn colleagues into lifelong friends
The people he loved most were at the center of Zach’s universe: his family
his “person.” He called her the “girl of his dreams”
they built a beautiful life with two children — son Rowan and daughter Ava — who were the pride and joy of Zach’s world
He was a doting dad who never missed an opportunity to be with his kids
Whether holding Rowan or teaching Ava to cook
raised him to be the remarkable man we all knew (and somehow survived his youthful misadventures with their sanity intact)
He is survived by a whole squad of siblings who will forever treasure growing up with him: brother Josh Eising (and Josh’s wife
Jenna Rippetoe and Aarya Rippetoe; brothers
and Nathan Tesmer; He also leaves behind grandparents Ken (“Pete”) and Nellie Eising; mother-in-law
Zach was also the cherished nephew of Dave and Dawn Eising
Zach didn’t reserve his love and loyalty for just blood relatives — his friends were every bit as much a part of his family to him
His “tribe” included friends Colin
Though his time with us was far too short
Zachary packed more living into 27 years than many do in a lifetime
He showed everyone that life is meant to be embraced with joy
and the love he spread to everyone lucky enough to know “Dean-o.” In our grief
we take comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on whenever we share a funny story about him or crack a joke in his honor
“It never hurts to be kind; you never know when it will come back to you.” And we think that sums Zach up pretty well
but we will honor him by continuing to laugh
and live a little bit like Dean-o every day
2025 at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home beginning at 3:00 p.m.
where friends and family may visit from 11:00 a.m

Zachary Dennis Vail passed away on the morning of January 2
at his home with his loving and devoted mother by his side
Zachary and Christina have lived in the Ogden area throughout Zachary’s life
Zachary found great joy and pleasure in being a skillful and knowledgeable “Gamer.” He loved to play and talk about gaming on any system—console
He also loved to sketch and paint and had a depth of artistic style all his own
He loved talking with people and never met a stranger because
he found a commonality and conveyed his kindness and love to everyone
He always looked forward to spending time with his cousins
Zachary had a special bond with his grandparents
he spoke often of his love for both of them
Christina; aunts and uncles; and many cousins
