Consumers Energy's natural gas plant expansion adds 50MW capacity and 2.5% efficiency gain
enhancing grid reliability before summer peak demand
Consumers Energy's strategic expansion of its Zeeland natural gas plant targets the critical summer peak demand period with completion scheduled for mid-June 2025
The technical upgrades being implemented include two key systems: an Advanced Gas Path (AGP) to boost output and efficiency
alongside an Advanced Fuel System (AFS) to optimize fuel mixing within the turbines
These enhancements will deliver 50 additional megawatts of generation capacity - enough to power approximately 50,000 homes during peak demand
The 2.5% improvement in fuel efficiency is particularly significant as it directly impacts operating economics while keeping the plant within existing emission limits
This efficiency gain will reduce fuel costs per megawatt-hour generated
enhancing the plant's competitive position in dispatch order
This expansion represents part of a broader infrastructure modernization approach evident in Consumers Energy's portfolio management
The company is maintaining operations at multiple generation assets including Jackson Generating Station
recently acquired Covert Generating Station
This diversified generation approach provides redundancy and operational flexibility across their Michigan service territory
which covers 68 counties and 6.8 million residents
The focus on enhancing existing facilities rather than only building entirely new generation suggests a capital-efficient approach to meeting reliability requirements
These incremental improvements to dispatchable generation assets provide the necessary grid stability for Michigan's evolving energy needs
Zeeland plant upgrades deliver measurable efficiency gains and capacity expansion
strengthening CMS's grid reliability without changing emissions profile
Consumers Energy's investment in its Zeeland natural gas facility represents a targeted approach to capacity expansion with operational efficiency benefits
Rather than pursuing more capital-intensive new construction
the company is optimizing existing assets through technological upgrades
which typically offers superior returns on invested capital
The 2.5% fuel efficiency improvement directly enhances the plant's contribution margin by reducing the largest variable cost component in thermal generation
this efficiency gain can translate to millions in annual fuel cost savings depending on dispatch hours and natural gas prices
The efficiency enhancement comes without changing the plant's emissions profile
as the company notes operations will remain within existing annual emission limits
The timing of this expansion is strategically significant
targeting completion before the higher-margin summer peak generation period when capacity is most valuable
This reflects prudent project management to maximize return on investment by ensuring the additional 50MW capacity is available during periods of highest demand and pricing
This expansion fits within Consumers Energy's broader infrastructure modernization initiative
which they've branded their "Reliability Roadmap." For Michigan's largest energy provider serving 6.8 million customers
these reliability-focused investments address a core business requirement while potentially reducing costly outages and service interruptions
The company's balanced approach to generation portfolio management - maintaining multiple facilities while incrementally improving their performance - demonstrates a measured strategy to enhance shareholder value while fulfilling their regulated utility obligations
"This expansion of our Zeeland facility is a powerful step forward in our commitment to reliability," said Norm Kapala
vice president of generation operations at Consumers Energy
and affordable energy to our customers 24/7

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — A site on 233 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven could be home to a new 128-room hotel. 6PM Hospitality Partners unveiled their plans for the hotel at a Grand Haven Planning Commission work session Tuesday night
"We're proposing [a] 128-room Residence Inn by Marriott
Residence Inn is an extended-stay brand by Marriott
which will really help capture guests to stay a long time and spend time and their resources in the restaurants and shops throughout downtown Grand Haven," said CEO of 6PM Hospitality Partners
Beukema said a hotel is much needed in downtown Grand Haven
"It is a missing part in downtown Grand Haven," Beukema said
"We've looked at industry data from downtown Grand Haven
and currently the number one hotel choice is in Holland for Grand Haven visitors
And the number two and number three are downtown Grand Rapids."
lakeshore tourists will have another option to stay in Grand Haven in the form of a Residence Inn by Marriott
"It's providing a different type of product within this community that will keep travelers here
The brand's average length of stay is between five and seven nights
where a transient hotel like a Hampton Inn or Courtyard Marriott would be more of one to two nights
And so that's going to keep people here longer to spend time and really enjoy downtown." said Beukema
"This property will generate about $18 million economic impact to the community
both in the restaurants and the stores at the gas stations and alike."
Plans for the hotel were positively received at Tuesday's work session
Tonight was just a planning commission study session to get their feedback and their reaction to where we're at so far," said Beukema
"I thought that meeting went very well tonight
We had a lot of positive feedback about the project
obviously some concerns around parking and the height."
Their next step is to prepare a full planning commission submittal to address the concerns they heard from the commission Tuesday night
"The engineering and architecture demolition would probably start late fall to mid winter
kind of that around the first of the year-ish
with a goal to open in March or April of 2027," Beukema said
It's a project that's close to home for the Zeeland native. "To create a place of a sense of home and community downtown is what really drives us

it is Madi Wyckoff's job to get on base and set the table for her hard-hitting Zeeland West teammates
There are few in the state who have set the table better than Wyckoff this season
has an on-base percentage well over .500 and give her teammates plenty of RBI opportunities
In Tuesday's doubleheader against Zeeland West
three RBIs and two runs scored to help spark the offense to 13-6 and 19-9 wins
"The rivalry is great every year and it is fun because we go to school together
But it is a rivalry taken very seriously by both teams
We had a great day with lots of hitting and lots of runs
When someone comes into the dugout hype after a big hit
we all get hype and it is contagious," Wyckoff said
That is my mindset every time I step in the box
I am trying to get on base for my team and score."
It was something Wyckoff did impressively against No. 1 Hudsonville last week when she had four hits and pitched the Dux past the Eagles, snapping Hudsonville's 48-game win streak

"She has four pitches and locates the ball well," Smart said
But it was a tough adjustment becoming one of the two regular pitchers
"It was harder coming in pitching this year because I didn't pitch a lot last year
That was a big step and it is about the girls behind me
Having the girls encourage me has been great
"Pitching has really helped me as a hitter

HOLLAND — Grand Rapids native Tim Hoffman is no stranger to the coffee business
He began operating a Biggby Coffee location in the Wyoming area 18 years ago
and he and his management company now own and operate more than 30 locations across West Michigan
that list now includes five shops across the Holland and Zeeland area
“The opportunity for the Holland and Zeeland locations fit very well in our blueprint and fit well in our organization,” Hoffman said
“It’s an incredible area and what we like is that all these locations are close to each other and have been operated as a family and are close knit.”
Area locations now owned and operated by Hoffman include:
Hoffman said each location will have a grand reopening event starting Tuesday
They will offer 20-ounce specialty beverages for $1.99 that day and follow with additional specials through Friday
There will also be a ribbon cutting event at the Chicago Drive location at 4 p.m
Hoffman said it’s important for Biggby locations to be active in their local communities and to give back when able
He plans to place an emphasis on that as he takes over the Holland and Zeeland locations
“We’re incredibly excited to step into ownership of these five locations,” Hoffman said
“These shops aren’t just businesses — they’re part of the neighborhoods we care so deeply about
and we’re committed to making them a bright spot in people’s days.”

Some of the locations now under Hoffman's ownership were previously owned and operated by Mark Dykema
Dykema was accused in 2024 of using devices to record “upskirt” photos or videos of women in multiple locations around West Michigan
By the time he was arraigned in September, Dykema no longer owned the coffee shops and was no longer affiliated with the company, his attorney at the time told The Sentinel. He entered pleas Wednesday, April 16, in Ottawa County Circuit Court for surveilling an unclothed person and using a computer to commit a crime, per a report from MLive

ZEELAND - Max Mulder is an imposing figure when he’s standing on the pitcher’s mound
The 6-foot-8, 230-pound right-hander struck out seven batters to help Zeeland East beat Zeeland West 9-3 in Game 1 of a baseball doubleheader on Tuesday
“That’s the most efficient he’s been all year,” Chix baseball coach Matt Sattler said
“To go seven innings and stay under 100 pitches
that’s what we’ve been looking for out of him
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning
capped off by a bases-loaded double by Peyton Davis
“We had a lot of traffic all game long,” Sattler said
“I figured if we could stick with it and stay positive
We had a couple of timely bunts and a really big hit by Peyton Davis to break it open.”
More: Zeeland native Jim Kaat elected to Michigan Baseball Hall of Fame
ripped a ball up the middle to clear the bases
so I knew we had to get something going,” Davis said
“It’s a great feeling just doing your job.”
Cam Jaworowski opened the fifth inning with a single and Ryan Kuzma walked
Then the imposing Mulder walked to the plate
And he actually beat it out for an infield single to load the bases
“I love bunting,” Mulder said with a smile
“I don’t have to hit the ball deep every time
Getting a bunt down can be more rewarding sometimes.”
“That’s not something you see too often,” he said
will play baseball at Hope College next year
“I felt like I did pretty good,” Mulder said
I had to just trust my defense behind me.”
Zeeland West starting pitcher Dominic Szczerowski
was strong on the mound through the first four innings
Zeeland East loaded the bases with no one out
And Szczerowski got out of the jam by striking out the side
But he couldn’t avoid the big fifth inning
Davis’ double knocked Szczerowski out of the game and he was relieved by sophomore Logan Nash
The Dux took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning when Lucas Smith doubled
moved to third on a balk and scored on a passed ball
stole third and scored after a throwing error
moved to third on a single by Jace Pyper and scored on a sacrifice fly from Smith for a 3-1 lead
Chix junior Derek Baxter was strong on the mound
helping Zeeland East beat Zeeland West 6-3
When he fills the zone he can compete with anyone.”

ZEELAND — A specialty coffee shop in downtown Zeeland is closing its doors after 15 years
citing rising costs and the presences of other coffee shops as reasons behind the decision
In a Facebook post from Tuesday

“We opened Mainstreet Beanery in 2009 to fill a void in downtown Zeeland,” Owner Doug Vos said
“We wanted to create a place where people could get a really good cup of coffee
either black or dressed up as fancy as they liked
We wanted to create an atmosphere where they felt comfortable staying to work
Vos said now is the right time to close the doors
and Zeeland has become saturated with coffee shops,” he said
“Due to this and substantial rising costs for a small business
Vos said the business plans to use the next couple weeks as a way to say goodbye to the customers and serve up those last cups of coffee

“We’ve tried new drink recipes and new baked goods
some of them turned into favorites and some of them should’ve stayed in our imaginations
Thank you for always sharing your brutally honest opinions about them," the post reads
Vos said it was the customers who made Mainstreet Beanery what it was and he’s grateful for each person he met along the way
“We have some of the best customers in the business and we will miss them immensely,” he said
“We are grateful for every staff member we have employed since 2009

ZEELAND - The key to any team's prolonged success is young athletes becoming leaders
Zeeland West's Riley Howe showed how pivotal that can be in competitive cheer as she led the Dux to new heights
One year after qualifying for regionals for the first time in program history
the Dux lost several key seniors that has built the program into a contender
Howe helped ensure they weren't done
More: Meet the Holland Sentinel All-Area Competitive Cheer Team, led by Riley Howe
1 goal was to lead by example and change the program in a way that would last far beyond when I graduate," Howe said
"Being someone who has been in all three rounds since their freshman year and in the center spot since last year
I knew that the incoming freshman would look to me for guidance
and that I could really help shape our team culture
i tried my best to make sure everyone was always included
and that our atmosphere was positive and encouraging."
It worked as the Dux won their first-ever conference championship
then qualified for state for the first time
"I worked really hard this past summer to improve my stamina for all of the rounds
and also focused on making my tumbling skills stronger," Howe said
"My coaches played a big part in my growth as an athlete because they were always willing to let me come in before practice
I would practice every day of the week because i truly just love doing the sport
and i feel the most like myself when i’m doing it
i’m incredibly grateful for the time i got to spend in the program
and how it has shaped me into the person I am today."
And that legacy lives on with the underclassmen who watched Howe's preparation on a daily basis
"I will never forget the feeling of qualifying for state finals
and it is not only because we made history by doing so
but because I knew I had another week left with the people that I love
I left everything that I could on the mat because I knew that it could be or was my last time performing as a high school cheerleader
I am so grateful to have something that makes saying goodbye so difficult
I know that we’ve left a legacy within the program - and that we're also leaving it in good hands."

Keaton Hendricks led the Dux with 29 points
