CARMEL – Zionsville coach Maggie Nobbe had been at this point before as she was a member of the school’s 2017 state champions which claimed the trophy here at Prairie View Golf Club Nobbe guided these Eagles to their first state title since that season behind the play of freshman Taylor Snively who captured individual honors with an even-par 144 “I just wanted to give these girls a mindset,” Nobbe said of her experience playing for a state championship squad “These girls went out there with total confidence and with no fear That was our motto for these two days and that’s what these girls did." Zionsville finished the 52nd annual state finals with a 627 score following up its first-round total of 315 with a 312 in round two That was good enough to overcome first-round leader Noblesville (310-322-632) Hamilton Southeastern placed third with 652 It’s a remarkable performance for Zionsville considering the Eagles are comprised of exactly zero seniors Snively and Avery Lewis (163) are freshmen Kaitlyn Adler (167) and Paige Henney (165) are sophomores and Amaya Wade (159) is a junior Only one other team in the field (South Bend Saint Joseph which finished 10th) fielded a team without seniors We tried to get better every tournament and that’s what we did It’s gives us confidence going into next year winning individual honors by two strokes over Castle senior Ashley Kirkland – who had the low-round of the tournament with a 3-under par Snively becomes only the third freshman to win the individual title and also the first individual champ to play for the team champions since 1999 Martinsville’s Leigh Anne Hardin and the Artesians completed a three-peat that season Snively finished the first round tied with Westfield’s Addi Kooi and Floyd Central’s Paige Giovenco who both slumped to a 76 in round two Those two finished tied for third at 4-over par Snively’s score included a triple-bogey on the final hole in round two but she had built a four-stroke lead by that point “That last hole was a little stressful,” Snively admitted “but my coaches were with me the last six holes to help me keep my head up and stay in the moment “Taylor is the kind of person that just goes out there and plays her game,” Nobbe said She loves this game and played a solid tournament with a team of underclassmen and a freshman individual champion “I’m just going to celebrate this and have fun.” Carmel's Sophie Mock made history during Friday's first round becoming the third golfer to record a hole-in-one at the IHSAA girls golf state championship She used a pitching wedge to perfectly solve the 106-yard She joins Castle's Hailey Kirkland (2020) and Fishers' Morgan Lewis (2015) in the exclusive club of aces Castle's Ashley Kirkland named Mental Attitude Award recipient Senior Ashley Kirkland of Castle High School was named the winner of this year's Mental Attitude Award during the awards ceremony Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee presents the award to a senior participant who was nominated by her principal and coach and has best demonstrated excellence in mental attitude An academic honors student and three-time state runner-up Ashley is the daughter of Keith and Sarah Kirkland of Newburgh She is verbally committed to Xavier University where she'll play golf for the Musketeers while studying Actuarial Sciences presented a $1,000 scholarship to Castle High School's general scholarship fund in the name of Kirkland.  A white Pontiac G6 slammed into a Zionsville Community Schools bus so hard Monday afternoon it became wedged underneath Just after 2:50 p.m., Zionsville Police and the Zionsville Fire Department were called to South 5th St & West Oak Street in Zionsville on a report of a vehicle crash. The crash happened about 10 minutes after the Bus 8 left Eagle Elementary left, according to reports from Fox59 The driver of the car wasn't seriously injured "We extracted (the driver) from the vehicle and they were taken to a hospital with minor injuries None of the children were injured either," Zionsville Police Capt 'It's very dangerous': Irvington residents again sound alarm after girl hit trying to catch bus Klykken said they had a large police and fire presence because of it being a main road in the town a suburb northwest of Indianapolis with a population of over 7,500 The speed limit is 30 mph and the road will be closed while they remove the vehicle from under the bus All students were reportedly unharmed and cleared to leave after EMT examinations Zionsville Community Schools told Fox59 the students were moved to another bus for their trips home and that several Zionsville buses had their routes altered or significantly delayed Jade Jackson is a Public Safety Reporter for the Indianapolis Star. Nolan hopes to play another season professionally and has been training accordingly but she's come to enjoy coaching — surprising considering she was "anti-coaching (as a career) for the longest time." She planned on staying involved in sports something involving her sports management degree "I saw how much time goes into coaching my freshman year of college and was like I'm never going to be a coach," Nolan recalled "But now that I've been training and coaching I'm like maybe I'm going to get sucked into this," she continued "Once you start getting invested in (the players) see them practice for a couple months in a row and start to see progress Macey Ring's picture board for senior night included a photo of her and Nolan at a Zionsville basketball camp Nolan's not entirely sure when it was taken but her shorts were "very long" and Ring was "teeny-tiny."  Ring grew up going to those camps — and was usually picked to play on Nolan's 5-on-5 team recalling their celebrations whenever they won Another photo shows Ring and senior forward Caroline Sampson posing with Nolan following the 2018 semistate championship game but her mom still drove their youth team to Valparaiso to watch Zionsville secure its first state finals berth in program history "It's the same with a lot of other kids," Nolan smiled "They grew up coming to watch my team and I play in high school now it's a full circle moment getting to coach them "Maddie was always the person I looked up to and it pushed me to keep wanting to play basketball because I wanted to be like her," added Ring who kept in touch during Nolan's college career "And it's super cool that now she's on our coaching staff and we get to see her every day She's still pouring her time into our program." Nolan was playing professionally in Puerto Rico when she received a text from Drudge last September Would you be interested in helping us out?" The text came as a surprise to Nolan who'd yet to formally meet the new Zionsville coach Drudge caught wind of it from junior varsity coach Leslie Frobig and a few others — including Nolan's dad we have to contact her right away and see if she's interested Nolan had reservations about potentially being unable to stay the entire season if an opportunity to play professionally arose but Drudge made it clear they were OK if it was an abbreviated stint "Maddie's such a great influence on women and girls and youth that I wanted her on our staff," the Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer said citing Nolan's intensity and basketball IQ among her biggest strengths "We want all girls to grow up feeling empowered and feeling they can speak up that they have a voice that should be heard That's something athletics provides us," Drudge later added "Maddie is able to show our players that you can be an athlete and have all the emotions (positive and negative) Nolan pauses while explaining a shooting drill to a group of middle schoolers "Are you guys going to be able to remember more than three steps?" Nolan has been running these training sessions since college will host open training sessions over the weekend for anyone and everyone who's interested The former Eagles standout has seen Zionsville's potential as a girls basketball powerhouse And while she fully believes the current high school team can reach those levels sustaining that success begins at the youth level "That's my mindset with training those kids Nolan is partnering with her longtime trainer later this year to help expand his program He focuses more on functional movement and defense instead of exclusively shooting "It's (about) the holistic game and mentality which was such a game changer for me in my journey." Nolan has successfully balanced those training sessions with coaching commitments and her aspirations of playing another season professionally Most days involve either a workout with Thomas or some open gym time followed by multiple training sessions and Zionsville practice later in the day Nolan hoped to have her next pro contract lined up by now and while it's tough not having a set date (or location) for that opportunity she likened it to her freshman year at Michigan when she didn't get to play the first couple months "Just because you're not playing doesn't mean you can stop practicing or getting in extra work," she said Nolan was "a little reserved" during the season's first couple practices taking care to not overstep as she learned from Drudge and found her role But the first-year coach wanted the opposite from her Nolan had played at a high level and Drudge wanted her to start communicating that knowledge with the team "I knew the girls would have a lot of respect for her so I wanted her to jump in and tell them what she was seeing on the floor." becoming more vocal and applying her knowledge The college game moves significantly faster than the high school game be it favorable matchups or weak spots in the defense She noticed Franklin Central was struggling against ball screens when they played in late December so she pulled guard Kenzie Chapman aside during a timeout The sophomore finished with 23 points on 10-of-19 shooting and the Eagles rallied for a 54-50 win "She's always motivating and wants us to have energy "If the game isn't going our way at the time she says: 'Make plays for other people.' 'This isn't here right now but if you look for this pass or this play who was an assistant at Zionsville during Nolan's career recalled Nolan calling out a press during their game earlier this season "Don't be surprised if she's the next head coach somewhere."  Nolan never really envisioned herself as a coach "It's different being on the bench and sometimes I wish I could go out there again," she smiled following a game in November so it's nice to see their progression and to teach them the basketball IQ side of the game." Nolan proudly pointed out players sprinting back on defense after a mistake instead of jogging more girls diving after loose balls and a couple others stepping in to take charges Nolan's open to returning to coach another season at Zionsville if the opportunity presents itself but also expressed interest in living in a different city for a few years "I don't know if it's going to be coaching for sure I've realized this is a passion of mine and I've fallen in love with it in a different way than playing."
