Gang violence became a major issue in Atlantis in October 2024 when a mass shooting in Mamre left five people dead

Atlantis resident Abraham Agulhas said his 15-year-old grandson Dehaino Bester was killed in November 2024
He said police know who the killers are but haven’t arrested them
Abraham Agulhas is the grandfather of 15-year-old Dehaino Bester who was gunned down in an alleged drive-by-shooting on Saturday
Bester was a midfielder for Jomos Power, a top team in Atlantis, and in October 2024 had the opportunity to join a training session with Cape Town City FC. He was supposed to play in a tournament in the US in 2025.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Agullas told the imbizo: “The driver was arrested but not the person(s) who fired the shots
The police know who these alleged killers are but they aren’t doing anything to arrest them.”
He hoped the deputy police ministers or Patekile would step up and help to ensure the perpetrators are put behind bars.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
In his keynote speech Mathale reiterated that the imbizo was not a talk shop
adding that the police are there to serve the community of Atlantis
“We have taken down all your complaints and we are going to respond to each and every complaint that you have raised
We are going to work with you to resolve the challenge that you are confronted with

it failed to yield what was promised when it was created about 45km from Cape Town
“The solution to Atlantis’ problems is not policing but the creation of opportunities that will make it possible for you to realise your dreams for young people
“We are in the Western Cape this week because the ANC is celebrating 113 years (at a celebration) in Khayelitsha on Saturday. Because we are here we felt it necessary that we must (also) come to communities like Atlantis so that we can talk about issues about crime.”advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
His message to corrupt police was that those who wear the uniform but report to drug lords or gangsters will have their uniforms replaced with orange uniforms.
Patekile assured residents that all issues raised will be addressed, and that Atlantis station commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Mario Thyse, and senior police management will meet residents within two weeks to provide feedback on all complaints raised.
“Schools are breeding grounds for criminals (when children drop out). Our appeal to you is to make sure that children from Grade R to 12 are at school.
“At this stage we can say they (criminals) are the alternative government, giving food to the people. We, as the government, must be sure that does not happen or otherwise you are now creating commodity gangs. We can’t allow that,” he said.
Smith told the gathering he had asked local councillor Alistair Lightburn to speak about strictly local issues such as street lights in Witsand and the closure of lanes.
“As we prepare to roll out cameras, I request that the two ward councillors meet with the strategic surveillance unit in the metro police and community safety framework, specifically SAPS. SAPS provides advice on where cameras should be placed. We can certainly do more and get cameras out to this side of the planet sooner,” Smith said.
Hendricks stressed the importance of a social economic response to the challenges raised, noting that Atlantis is part of the District Development Model. Addressing parents in Atlantis, he said: “I hope that many of your children who have written matric exams pass and… if they have applied for and are accepted at any university or college, the Department of Social Development and also the Department of Higher Education, we guarantee that they will get a bursary.
“It is critical that Atlantis sends their youngsters to (improve) their education (so they can return) to help fix the problems. Atlantis’ problems can only be solved by its children.” DM

Cata spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi criticised Codeta’s actions in Atlantis
accusing it of operating without permits and infringing on Cata’s territory
“How would you feel if someone came to your yard and built a house without speaking to you?” said Sityebi
“They just took people who are not even associated with anyone and launched a branch
They knew what they were doing because they did not even send an invitation to us.”
Codeta spokesperson Makhosandile Tumana defended the launch
saying they were approached by local taxi operators in 2019 to launch a branch in Atlantis
but it had been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic
“The members are not under Cata and we found out that they have seven permits.”
it needs to have at least 10 permit-holders
“We tried speaking to Cata but they were not available and we will continue trying because we do not want any violence,” said Tumana
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), which includes members from both associations, has been asked to intervene before violence erupts.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads

had deployed significant resources to Atlantis in response to threats of violence
Several public transport vehicles had been impounded for operating without permits

Science-based studies indicate the discovery of subsea islands

Evidence supports that the myth bases its origins in actual geological phenomena
Plato described Atlantis as an ancient dominion that flourished during his period for a time span of 9000 years
Plato documented that Atlantis started as one immense island that reached across the Pillars of Hercules in the Strait of Gibraltar region
Plato established the origin of Atlantis as an extensive island bordered by the Pillars of Hercules that split the Strait of Gibraltar
Technological progress was a main feature of Atlantean society
Research scholars and a broad range of viewers maintain their interest in the Atlantis legend because of its enduring fascination
Plato described the Atlantis Islands as made up of circles with an impressive central metropolis
The Atlantean society had abundant access to silver and gold resources while maintaining multiple exotic animal species on its territory
which led to its total submersion beneath the sea in a single day
The story has fascinated researchers who have conducted numerous expeditions searching for verifiable evidence

Archaeologists consider “Los Atlantes” possible secular relics of the ancient realm of Atlantis
This archaeological discovery is one of the most profound discoveries in recent history if confirmed
According to Marine geologist Luis Somoza of the Geological Survey of Spain, the robot operated below 2,500 meters of ocean depth to acquire samples. The collected samples showed beachfronts
demonstrating that these features were part of former islands that sank underneath the sea
Geological Survey of Spain scientist Luis Somoza indicates that volcanic lava around these islands solidified and led to the lowering of the mainland
The scientific data shows that this area was once populated land before it was lost underwater
Geological records indicate that these underwater formations might be the basis for tales concerning Atlantis
The past ice age created very different sea levels from our existing ocean levels
which reached their lowest point around 25,000 years ago
The former volcanic islands from earlier geological periods could have become the home of prehistoric early civilizations
these islands gradually disappeared into the ocean
The researchers will examine the obtained data through advanced testing to learn specifically when the sunken islands went beneath the sea
The obtained information will help better understand the relationship between sunken islands and the Atlantis legend
The discovery of these islands provides a theory about how the Atlantis myth originated because the people of Atlantis most likely did not possess flying vehicles or modern technological advancements
Advancements in science may now deliver answers to explain an enigmatic mystery that has survived since antiquity
New life appears in the myth of Atlantis because researchers discovered submerged islands near Spain’s shoreline. The story of an ancient civilization is contested, yet the geological findings suggest some aspects of Atlantis mythology could prove factual. The scientific investigation produces a new historical understanding of ancient civilizations and demonstrates how science reveals secrets

Atlantis The Royal (a Dubai hotel that opened in 2023 with a private Beyoncé concert) cost well over $1 billion to build
Operator Kerzner now says it aspires to build as many as 15 such Atlantis mega-resorts worldwide
The owner of One&Only Resorts is playing a delicate balancing act
Kerzner International wants to nearly double the ultra-luxury brand's count while maintaining the exclusivity that commands premium rates
it's accelerating the development of newer concepts like wellness-focused Siro
Kerzner currently operates 14 One&Only resorts
It's opening another in Montana this year — its first Alpine resort — and has 10 others in the pipeline
"We've grown exponentially lately, and we have to keep an eye on our strategic philosophy," said CEO Philippe Zuber
The Dubai-based company will cap its One&Only portfolio at about 35 properties
prioritizing exclusivity and maintaining high service standards over geographic ubiquity
"To be true to our DNA and to do what makes our brand so special
Across its brands, Kerzner now manages 21 hotels, with 19 more properties in development. While it takes a measured approach to growth in the ultra-luxury segment, it plans to accelerate the expansion of its newer lifestyle brands, Siro and Rare Finds
but you need to have a certain size in order to have the bandwidth to be able to consistently invest in your brand markers and stay innovative," Zuber said
He noted that achieving scale enables some efficiencies in marketing
and Ritz Carlton anticipate larger portfolios
suggesting the ultra-luxury segment has room to run
Zuber said Kerzner's plans to double One&Only and add more properties for its other brands have required it to reorganize its leadership to ensure it has dedicated brand leaders to oversee quality control during expansion
"To take the company to the next level of success
I needed the organization to evolve," Zuber said
the company installed Mark Kirby as president of One&Only
Mattheos Georgiou has become a senior vice president overseeing Siro and Rare Finds
"We clearly believe that the world can take 10 to 15 Atlantis resorts
"So we currently have three within our portfolio
The goal of 15 is ambitious, considering that each takes years — and billions of dollars to build. Former Atlantis president Timothy Kelly said at a Skift event in 2023 that the costs to build are so high that Atlantis may require financial support at a government level when it chooses some locations
As recently as May 2023, Kelly told Bloomberg he had "just" four future Atlantis projects in his sights
In 2016, Kerzner signed to operate a new-build resort in Hawaii, Atlantis Ko Olina. However, after years of no progress and after the development company for the resort liquidated in 2024
the project has not been mentioned again and has been removed from Kerzner’s development page
Zuber emphasized that Atlantis Dubai remains strong even without gaming amid uncertainty about potential casino licenses in the UAE
"Our Dubai property is an extraordinary success," Zuber said
"I don't think we need gaming to sustain that
We've proven it's one of the most exclusive integrated resorts in the world."
Kerzner’s two Atlantis resorts in Dubai have seen some key leaders move to other integrated resorts
Kelly left last August to join Melco in Macau
while Atlantis The Royal president Tom Roelens moved in late 2024 to Wynn Al Marjan Island — an upcoming integrated resort in Ras Al Khaimah
Kerzner's aspirations come as Zuber acknowledges the need to stay on top of shifting trends
"Prices are not going to go up plus 10% a year anymore," he said
"The new cycle we are in is about serving guests' needs for longevity
The company is betting its wellness and lifestyle offerings
Maintaining and expanding the length of stay of existing guests is instead a major focus
One&Only properties boast an average length of stay of 4.5 nights
He characterized that as among the highest lengths in the industry and a testament to the brand's focus on curated experiences and privacy
opened its first property in Dubai last year
Zuber described Siro as "one of the most disruptive brands in the market," citing how each hotel has a theme of "ultimate fitness and recovery." The brand has properties under development in Saudi Arabia
"The travel sector is in an incredible moment now," Zuber said
highlighting post-pandemic shifts in luxury travel preferences
"No one is willing to compromise their lives anymore
This common ground is about health and how people are aware of their wellness needs
It's a phenomenal change happening in the hospitality world."
remains in the early stages as an opportunistic conversion play
while Siro targets urban destinations with significant business traffic
This collection of resorts debuted in February 2023 with the Bab Al Shams in Dubai
A website is advertising a plan for "25 residences managed by IVO
a Rare Finds hotel."The One&Only cap shows Kerzner recognizes a truth about luxury: Scarcity creates value in premium pricing power
Maintaining that principle of exclusivity while finding new growth drivers for One&Only and Atlantis will be a tricky needle to thread
Newer brands like Siro and Rare Finds may help expand into adjacent customer segments

Atlantis Foundries have recently achieved a notable milestone in the company’s history when it recorded the casting of its two-millionth heavy-duty engine block (HDEP) since the foundry cast its first sample just over 16 years ago
What is more remarkable is that the two million mark has been achieved in just six years since the company recorded its first million castings of HDEPs
which took the company just over 10 years to reach
Atlantis Foundries has always specialised in manufacturing medium to heavy-duty engine blocks and originally began as a machining facility back in 1979 when it was known as Atlantis Diesel Engines (ADE)
The company was established by the South African government to produce diesel engines for the South African commercial and agriculture markets
Subsequently the company had obtained a license to manufacture Mercedes-Benz and Perkins diesel engines
Pieter du Plessis (CEO) and the Management team of Atlantis Foundries
“The foundry was only established in 1982 and it concentrated on producing engine blocks for truck
One of the first blocks the foundry cast was for the ERF model 66 truck,” said Atlantis Foundries’ CEO Pieter du Plessis
“This particular milestone that we have reached is for what is known as the Daimler Truck Heavy Duty Engine Platform Block
The grey cast iron castings are produced in two variants – OM471/DD13 and OM472/DD15 – and the main truck applications are for Mercedes-Benz (Europe)
“One of our key customers has always been Daimler Truck AG
Another important customer is Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) in the USA
which is also owned by Daimler Truck AG and was acquired by them in 2000
We ship blocks to Detroit Diesel Corporation in the USA and to the Daimler plant in Mannheim
Atlantis Foundries has been the only supplier of OM472/DD15(16) crankcase castings to DDC for the entire life of the HDEP engine.”
Daimler Truck AG is a German multinational automotive corporation
Baden-Württemberg and is one of the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers
The Detroit company manufactures heavy-duty engines and chassis components for the on-highway and vocational commercial truck markets
Detroit Diesel has built more than five million engines since 1938
more than one million of which are still in operation worldwide
Detroit Diesel’s product line includes engines
During the month of July 2024 Atlantis Foundries welcomed new CFO Benjamin Benzhaf
pictured here with CEO Pieter du Plessis (left)
“We cast our first sample in 2007 and by 2013 we were producing 100 000 blocks per annum
This shot up to in excess of 150 000 blocks per annum in 2014
hence the acceleration to the one-millionth mark
These blocks range from 430kg to 450kg in weight and are fettled
“This is a notable achievement as it is only for the one type of the many different engine blocks that we produce.”
“We have a very strong relationship with Daimler Truck in Germany and have been supplying them product for many years
This resulted in the South African operation Daimler Mercedes-Benz South Africa (then called DaimlerChrysler)
and incorporating Atlantis Foundries into the Daimler Trucks Powertrain business unit.”
“Atlantis Foundries had embarked on a process that has paved the way to becoming a Smart Foundry by embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution
aims to combine various technologies available to gather and analyse process data
with the purpose of improving product quality and cost efficiency.”
“The basic building blocks for such a concept are robotics
and the tracking of components using RFID and other software applications
With all the data available and it being traceable to individual castings
the door has opened to enable the use of Artificial Intelligence for process control and inspection of components.”
The Production Managers of Atlantis Foundries
From the left Bonus Tomose – Mould Line
Barney Newman – Core Shop and Elwin Braaf – Melting
“The corner stone of the project is the programme of automation in the foundry
The Fanuc robots installed by Robotic Innovations have become the workhorse to carry instruments that acquire data while handling or performing its operations
All the data collected throughout the process by the robots and the variety of inline instruments will be linked to specific castings
“This process data is analysed using Artificial Intelligence to predict various aspects of the castings such as material properties and sub-surface defects.”
“The assembly of core packages for heavy-duty engine blocks has traditionally been done manually at Atlantis Foundries. We have now installed a fully automated Fanuc robot handling and assembly process
where individual cores are taken directly from the core making machines and assembled by robots before being handed over to the subsequent processes of the core shop.”

She says the victims are between 18 and 30 years old.

helping the company design more sustainable products
Sustainable Italian supplier Atlantis Headwear (asi/37380) has released a new tool designed to accurately measure the carbon footprint of its products
Dubbed Carbon Footprint Atlantis (CF Atlantis)
the tool follows a clear process based on compliance with international standards
analyzing every stage of a product’s life – including where materials come from
energy used in production and how waste is handled
Atlantis Headwear (asi/37380) has launched a tool to calculate the carbon footprint of its products
“This isn’t just about tracking carbon – it’s about reducing it,” said Federico Pasini
Atlantis is building sustainability into every part of production.”
the CF Atlantis tool uses specific data from Atlantis’ operations
breaking down emissions into detailed categories like fossil fuel
land impact and emissions that come from natural sources
The supplier said this helps it get a crystal-clear view of where emissions are highest and where real change can happen
The tool doesn’t just measure though; it also helps Atlantis design more sustainable products
The CF Atlantis system recommends using materials with lower emissions or making products more energy efficient
It can even test how small changes in the production process or transport can lead to big environmental benefits
Atlantis published more details about the CF Atlantis tool on its website
noting that the tool is certified with CF Systematic Approach through a third-party entity accredited by Accredia

Ever since we became parents two years ago
my husband and I have completely changed how we plan vacations
Now when we book a trip, we look for family-friendly resorts with on-site amenities to keep our toddler entertained
This recently brought us to Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas
We first took our son there in 2023 and loved how easy the vacation was for our little family
with its on-site amenities and many stroller-friendly ramps and pathways
We chose to stay at its Reef hotel as it's in a quiet area of the sprawling complex
This time, I booked the hotel through my Amex Platinum Card because it got me a $100 credit and complimentary breakfasts for my stay
We also booked during a special offer for 25% off the nightly room rate
we spent $2,279 for four nights in a one-bedroom oceanview suite in August (low season)
plus $816 on food and drinks on the property after redeeming that $100 credit
Normally, we would've booked a simpler, lower-tier room, but since it was low season, we got a decent deal on an oceanview suite
Though the decor wasn't particularly modern or chic — and even felt a bit dated — our room felt clean
thanks to the stunning view of turquoise waters from our private balcony
and were glad to have spent the extra money
It's going to be hard to go back to garden-view life
We realized that sit-down restaurant meals weren't going to work for our family after an embarrassing trip to Carmine's
and a big fridge made our stay much less stressful
but we could also make eggs and enjoy early breakfasts together in the room
My credit card came with a perk that we used for complimentary morning meals at the hotel
Since we liked eating breakfast in our room
we used the credit for late brunches at Perch
a sleek sit-down restaurant with upscale à la carte options such as avocado toast with poached eggs
a buffet restaurant with food my husband and I thought was mediocre
We went to the buffet more often because it was more toddler-friendly and usually had a light poolside lunch or snack later in the day
At many Caribbean resorts
you need to wake up early to grab a good lounge chair in the shade — or in this case
with a working canopy — and this was no exception
with powder sand and a location in a cove with shallow
spilling waves that were perfect for kids to play in
But we found that guests would wake up at the crack of dawn to throw their belongings on the best chairs to call dibs
the coolest part of the beach is the actual reef in the water
We saw tons of tropical fish of all different colors just steps away from our hotel lobby
Our son loved splashing around in the zero-entry pool next to the Reef hotel
which meant we could easily bounce back and forth between the two
but we only spent time here and at the pools in Aquaventure
probably because it was low season and there were so many other pool options
Aquaventure, the water park at Atlantis
is free for guests and a huge perk of staying at the megaresort
The park has everything from short and slow water slides for little kids to nearly vertical ones
Our son loved the water-play zone and my husband and I enjoyed the transparent waterslide that took us through an exhibit with live sharks
which we got to explore when we had the sitter
Atlantis has an enormous indoor marine habitat with more than a dozen lagoons and thousands of aquatic animals
Strolling through the different tunnels was a fun way to take a break from the outdoors and let our toddler walk around safely
When looking at reviews of Atlantis before my trip
the most common complaint I saw was that the food and drinks felt overpriced
My husband and I hired the same babysitter on another night for three hours again so we could visit the chef Michael White's new restaurant
We had a nice meal that included amberjack crudo and octopus-and-bone-marrow pasta
but dinner ran us $310 — and that's not including what we paid for the sitter
There are lots of fast-casual options on the property as well
Two rice bowls and a few sides and drinks from Field Trip set us back $74 another night
you can buy $100 in food credit ahead of your trip and get an additional $15 free
Though Atlantis felt a little overpriced to us
the convenience of having access to so many restaurants
and amenities on one property is unbeatable
It's an especially wonderful place to travel with a small child
We were able to see so much and easily return to our room whenever we needed — all without having to pack all of our essentials and toddler into a car
Plus, it's great that Paradise Island is only a three-hour flight from New York
and the resort is a short taxi ride from the local airport
our visit during the low season was just over $3,000 — though that's not including the cost of our airfare
we plan to come back to Atlantis in the future
