An alleged Western Cape extortion kingpin was among seven suspected criminals who were shot and killed during a shootout with the police in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.
Speaking at the release of the third quarter crime statistics on Friday, National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola confirmed that Yanga 'Bara' Nyalara, who has had previous run-ins with the law on charges including murder, rape, extortion, and robbery was among the deceased.
It was reported that officers from the National Intervention Unit tried to stop vehicles that were allegedly transporting illegal firearms to Butterworth, from Cofimvaba, when the suspects sped off resulting in a high-speed chase.
Several firearms were retrieved at the scene, including high-calibre rifles.
Police initially confirmed that six people had been shot and killed during the gun battle, however, a seventh body was found after the wounded suspect had allegedly attempted to flee the scene.
“Police were pushed off the road and they tried to stop those cars, then as a result, the occupants of three cars shot at the police. As a result, seven people were declared dead. It was discovered that one of those was someone called ‘Bara’.”

CAPE TOWN - One of Khayelitsha's most feared criminals Yanga "Bara" Nyalara is believed to be one of seven suspects killed in a shootout with police in the Eastern Cape

In South Africa, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has opened a new project in the country’s southeastern Eastern Cape province. The new project provides a community-focused approach to care for people with non-communicable diseases
MSF country operations manager in South Africa
MSF is supporting the Eastern Cape Department of Health to improve services for patients with chronic conditions, focusing on type 2 diabetes and hypertension
With the help of community-based organisations
we want to take some of those services closer to communities
We also aim to offer new treatment options to patients
If our research during this project shows that better outcomes can be achieved with the new medicines
we will advocate for the government to make these medicines available to patients through the public health system
After supporting the COVID-19 response in several major Eastern Cape hospitals
MSF came to realise that the Eastern Cape health system is in need of support
We specifically noted that the burden of chronic conditions is high
whereas access to chronic care is insufficient and the standard of chronic care is often poor
we have found Department of Health staff in Eastern Cape and especially those working in Amathole District
to be very cooperative and open to working with MSF
Why the focus on non-communicable diseases
we know that treatment coverage for diabetes and hypertension is poor
Eastern Cape Province has a diabetes prevalence rate of 12.5% among adults but a treatment coverage rate of only 34.6%
nearly two-thirds of people who have diabetes are not receiving treatment
we are supporting the establishment of more external Pick-Up Points
These are sites in communities where stable patients with chronic conditions can go to pick up their medicine
There are very few Pick-Up Points in rural areas
In supporting the establishment of Pick-Up Points in rural communities
we want to demonstrate that chronic medication for diabetes and hypertension can consistently and sustainably be made available via these sites
we’re relying on community engagement and empowerment
Community leaders are helping us to identify convenient pick-up sites
and we are supporting community-based organisations to register and sustain new Pick-Up Points
We’re supporting clinic doctors and nurses to better identify and manage patients with non-communicable diseases
This includes identifying patients who are eligible to use Pick-Up Points; doing so could reduce the pressure on clinic services
We’re also supporting efforts to improve retention in care
mainly with health promotion and patient support
we aim to provide access to new treatment options
We want to see if we can improve patient outcomes using diabetes and hypertension treatment options that are widely available in the private sector but not in use in the public health system
If our research finds that better treatment outcomes for people can be achieved with new medicines
we will advocate to have these new medicines included on the Essential Medicines List
It is our experience that many of the patients who are accessing diabetes and hypertensive care are not being managed well
with patients still having many complications
Patients with non-communicable diseases are required to travel long distances
We find that patients on chronic treatment are not making good use of the options that are available to them for picking up their medication in a way that is convenient and inexpensive
We believe that much of what MSF in South Africa has learned over the last two decades in treating HIV and tuberculosis (TB) is relevant to the care of diabetes and hypertension
These lessons can be easily adapted to transform the ways in which non-communicable diseases are identified and managed

Families who were evicted from their shacks in Butterworth
in 2011 by the Fingo Tribal Authority to make way for a mall are still waiting for their houses
The 300 families were evicted from Bhungeni informal settlement and moved to temporary housing in nearby Eugene. They say they were told by officials from Mnquma Local Municipality and the Eastern Cape Department of Human of Settlements that they would be moved to RDP houses.advertisementDon't want to see this? But 13 years later they are still in temporary housing and there is no sign of a mall

Some residents have used zinc sheets to cover the broken walls
There are dumping sites just a few kilometres away
Nothing has changed since GroundUp reported on the community in 2017
Residents say that after 13 years the roofs and walls of their temporary houses are broken
Sisa Matutu, who was the residents’ chairperson when the eviction took place, told GroundUp that on the morning of 30 March 2011 they were woken up by bulldozers and soldiers destroying their shacks.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
He said the residents knew that the land belonged to the chiefs and that the chiefs had applied for a court order
we were still busy consulting lawyers asking for help
people were not even given a chance to take their belongings
Most people lost their things there,” said Matutu
He said that for two days residents were left homeless
the Department of Human Settlements built the shelters as an emergency measure
He said the land was not levelled and the shelters were put on top of bricks because it was a wetland

When GroundUp visited the area we met a group of seven residents who were gathered next to a wood fire drinking wine
When they saw us they quickly hid their drink and asked to be interviewed
They said most people in the area relied on the Expanded Public Works Programme for employment
and they feared that if municipal officials found out that they had spoken to the media they would not be hired
One man told us that if we went around the area we would find more groups of people sitting and sharing two-litre containers of wine

Mnquma Local Municipality spokesperson Loyiso Mpalantshane told GroundUp that construction of the mall would start “in the immediate future”
feasibility study and environmental impact assessment were complete and building plans had been submitted to the municipality
Mpalantshane said this was the responsibility of the Department of Human Settlements
Fingo Tribal Authority chairperson Chief Zizi Ngcongolo said the land belonged to the Fingo tribe
He said he was not the chairperson when the eviction occurred
“Residents were informed even before they built there that the land belongs to the chiefs, not the municipality. When we wanted our land, we informed the municipality and asked them to find a place for the people, but residents refused to leave. We then took the matter to court. We were granted the order to evict the people,” said Ngcongolo.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating a fatal shootout that took place on Thursday
on the N2 near Gcuwa (Butterworth) in the Eastern Cape
which ended in a deadly exchange of gunfire
resulted in the deaths of six suspects who had allegedly opened fire on police officers
The shootout is believed to have involved a notorious Western Cape criminal
raising concerns over the growing threat of interprovincial crime networks
including the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID)
have now launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident
According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa
SAPS members spotted two suspicious vehicles near Cofimvaba
The chase concluded on the N2 highway near Butterworth
where the suspects engaged in a gunfight with officers
Authorities believe that among the deceased was Yanga “Bara” Nyalara
with multiple charges related to extortion
The presence of a Western Cape crime syndicate member in the Eastern Cape has raised concerns about criminal networks operating across provincial borders
outgoing Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Nomthetheleli Mene praised the operation
calling it a significant breakthrough in the fight against organized crime
She added that SAPS will continue intensifying operations aimed at dismantling syndicates operating in the province
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has confirmed that it is investigating the circumstances of the shootout to ensure that SAPS officers followed all proper procedures
Police watchdog groups have urged IPID to ensure transparency in the investigation while acknowledging that SAPS officers are often forced to make split-second decisions in life-threatening situations
The presence of high-profile Western Cape criminals in the Eastern Cape has sparked fresh concerns about cross-border crime syndicates
Reports indicate that criminal networks from Cape Town are expanding their operations into other provinces
particularly in towns where policing resources are stretched thin
The Eastern Cape has seen a rise in hijackings
and extortion-related crimes linked to Western Cape gangs
Local communities in Butterworth and surrounding areas have expressed mixed reactions to the police operation
While many residents are relieved that the alleged criminals have been neutralized
some remain concerned about the potential for retaliation by their associates
Community leaders have urged the police to remain vigilant and ensure that criminal networks operating in the region are dismantled entirely

thenobullpartners is founded to address the two key challenges that many brands and businesses struggle with:
“We want to give brands what they have always needed but rarely got: senior-level expertise and unbiased perspectives to put their brand at the centre of business growth strategies,” Butterworth added
“Brands don’t need more expensive chiefs
they need expertise that matches with their ambition

Reiss Butterworth says the team are looking to put things right on Friday evening as they welcome Batley Bulldogs to the Steel City Stadium in the Betfred Championship
After a tough outing against Doncaster last weekend
the hooker believes the group is determined to respond in the right way
by concentrating on their own game and building some momentum
“I’m really excited for the game on Friday
I’m sure all of the boys will be,” Butterworth added
“I think that Batley are a group of lads who really work hard for one another; they turn up for each other and they’ve got some good strike in attack
and they’ll come here looking to make it tough for us
“They’ve been a very good side now for a number of years
They’ve got a good pack and some outside backs
and I can imagine they’ll be there for the full eighty minutes on Friday evening”
The game carries a bit of extra meaning for the 26-year-old
who spent time with the Bulldogs back in 2018
“I got my first proper taste of men’s rugby league with Batley
Some of the lads are still there who I played with,” he explained
“It was a good group of lads; I enjoyed my time there
They’re a great club who really try and look after you when you’re there
It’s always hard having to retreat up and down the hill
but I’m pleased that we’re at home this week and hopefully we can get the win for the fans.”
While results haven’t gone their way in recent weeks
Butterworth says there’s still belief in the group
and Friday presents an opportunity to build some momentum ahead of a busy May schedule
“It wasn’t really ideal for us losing to Doncaster last Friday
but hopefully we can now look ahead to tomorrow’s game
get the win and try to kick on from there,” he said
we didn’t want to be anywhere near where we are currently in the league table
but hopefully we can get the win to help kick start our season."
With Head Coach Craig Lingard preparing to face his former side for the first time since leaving to join Castleford
Butterworth feels his insight will be valuable
remains on the Eagles getting their own game right
“Craig will give us some insider knowledge about Batley and how they play
having previously coached them for a number of years
They’ve got a similar squad to what he’ll have had when he was there
we need to make Friday more about us and ensure we do what we need to do to get the win.”
