with a self-scoring system from eagle to double-bogie

The Merafong Local Football Association (MLFA) held a big event in the Carletonville Civic Centre on April 26.
According to the MLFA’s chairperson, Mbuyiselo Zuwani, they hosted an ordinary congress. “The event went very well and was attended by 26 Merafong teams affiliated with Merafong LFA. The Second Deputy President of West Rand Football Association, Mongo Landiwe, was also present,” said Zuwani. The highlight of the event was when 10 football veterans from around Merafong were recognised and appreciated by the leadership.
“The 10 gentlemen were acknowledged for the work that they have been doing for Merafong Football,” explained Zuwani.
The stars who were rewarded include Moses Mokoena, Elias Legoete, Isaac Mbulawa, Thobile Ngquphaza, Johannes Matsemela, Roboleme Johannes Tlhapi, Tsietsi David Setlai, Seroke Letsoenya, Joseph Mothlathlego and David Mthembu. Each received a certificate as well as a personalised branded Merafong LFA T-shirt.
The event included talks about various other issues.
“The leadership of Merafong LFA also received a grant from the department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation. This will be used for league prizes and playoffs for U13, U15, U17 and senior or U19 leagues,” he concluded.

Communities in Carletonville, west of Gauteng, say the dust from mine dumps is impacting their health. They say the situation has been like this for many years without any intervention from authorities.
Health experts warn that living near mine dumps increases the risk of respiratory diseases.,
Yolanda Kolwana has been living with Tuberculosis for four years. The mother of four says she is unable to provide for her children due to the disease, which she believes was caused by the dust from the nearby mine dumps.
These residents say living near a mine dump is a constant challenge. “I started being sick around 2021, I take pills every day and now I struggle to breathe. a month doesn’t end without me being admitted to the hospital. I would really appreciate it if the government could assist me with a grant because now I can’t work for my family, I don’t know how to put food on the table for my kids.”
“People are very sick, even me. I’m also sick and it’s because of this dust. Even if you can come inside you’ll see dust everywhere. We are poor, we just need help from the government.”
JOHANNESBURG - Twelve pupils from Rocklands Primary School and Laerskool Blyvooruitsig in Carletonville were killed in an early morning crash.
The driver was also killed in the crash in the Kokosi-Wedela area of Merafong.
Seven pupils were rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.
"I am profoundly saddened by this tragic event," Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation Matome Chiloane said in a statement.
"The loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners."
The department has dispatched its Psycho-Social Support team to provide immediate support.
JOHANNESBURG - The case against a driver involved in an accident that killed 11 learners in Carletonville in July has been postponed to 2025. Gert van Emmenis will return to the Fochville Magistrates Court on 20 January after further investigations. He appeared in court briefly on Tuesday morning facing charges of culpable homicide. Van Emmenis was driving his bakkie on the morning of the accident, when it rammed into a taxi transporting the children, killing the 11 learners and their driver.
JOHANNESBURG - The first phase of DNA analysis to identify the bodies of some of the pupils killed in this week’s horrific Carletonville crash has concluded.
Twelve people died in the accident involving a scholar transport vehicle on Wednesday. Among the dead, was the driver of the minibus taxi.
While some of the victims have been identified, it’s been an emotional morning for relatives who gathered at the Kokosi Community Centre seeking confirmation and clarity.
The Kokosi Community Centre was filled with deafening cries, as mothers, fathers and close relatives of the victims began the task of identifying their loved ones.
Reaching the end of day one of the DNA identification process, only one family was able to identify their child through a photograph.
The police’s Kgomotso Netshitangani: "We were hoping maybe three but only one could... [about] 80%."
The next phase is to compare the DNA samples taken on Friday with the bodies.

JOHANNESBURG - Preparations are underway for the memorial service of 11 pupils who died in a horror crash in Carletonville last week.
The joint service will be held at the Grace Bible Church in the area on Tuesday.
The children, along with their scholar transport driver, were killed when the minibus taxi they were travelling in was hit from behind by a bakkie.
The driver of the bakkie is under police surveillance while he recovers in hospital.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chilone will be attending the memorial service in support of the affected families.
"As you will recall, the tragic accident occurred in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong, resulting in the loss of 11 learners and their driver," said spokesperson Steve Mabona.

Various officials from the Gauteng government - including Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko and Education MEC Matome Chiloane - visited the scene and conveyed their condolences.
With police confirming the launch of an investigation and the opening of case of culpable homicide, the provincial Department of Health has committed to speeding up the identification process.
"They must try and speed up that process of the DNA test, it will be done,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.
The very same officials and more are set to visit the schools and families of the victims.
RAMAPHOSA, BASIC EDUCATION MINISTER CONVEY SYMPATHIES
President Cyril Ramaphosa and Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube have conveyed their condolences to the relatives of the 12 children who died in the crash.
Eleven of the learners are from Rocklands Primary School, and one learner is from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig.
Minister Gwarube sympathised with the families while Ramaphosa wished the survivors a speedy recovery.
Presidency Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya: “The President also wishes a speedy and full recovery to seven learners who suffered injuries in the incident”

"A case of culpable homicide is still under investigation," said police spokesperson Brenda Muridili.
"The case was in court on the 12th of July. The suspect did not attend, as he is still currently in hospital under police guard. The case will return to court on the 18th of July 2024."

JOHANNESBURG - Gert van Emmenis, the man charged for the accident that killed 11 children and the driver of their scholar transport, has been granted R20,000 bail.
He was charged with culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
Van Emmenis agreed to the State’s bail conditions requesting that he hand over his passport and refrain from contacting any of the witnesses.
Despite requesting that he be granted only R10,000 bail, Van Emmenis was able to meet the R20,000 bail set by the court.
The National Prosecution Authority (NPA)'s Lumka Mahanjana: "The State did not oppose bail at the moment, as he is facing a schedule one offence and number two, his address was confirmed, therefore there were no grounds for the State to oppose bail."

Police also committed to expediting the identification process and conducting tests before determining if he could be held responsible.
"As in when the driver is ready to be interviewed, they do the investigations," said Merafong City Mayor Nozuko Best.
So far preliminary numbers reveal that seven children were admitted, six discharged and another transferred to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
Meanwhile, the driver is at a private hospital.
