Every bit of the old building has been used – even an old fridge has been repurposed for storing crutches The hospital requires significant power – around 350kW – but the cookhouse can only supply a fraction of that and managing laundry all need careful planning in a space not designed for such operations expanding a hospital meant adding another tent but now medics must work with the limited space inside the buildings they convert Overcrowding increases the risk of infection forcing the medical team to innovate in managing capacity Lt Col Woods said medical personnel seldom get to choose where they set up their hospital British military medics remain ready to provide critical care Please select at least one newsletter to subscribe to: Photograph courtesy of Hen Mother Cookhouse Longtime diners of Hen Mother Cookhouse in Johns Creek know certain truths: You can’t make a reservation and you’ll probably have to wait and chef-owner Soraya Khoury moves to the beat of her own drum she wasn’t in any rush to open a second location Hen Mother’s second location will open in downtown Alpharetta at 50 South Main Street It’s twice the size of the original location at 110 seats and brings new offerings to the table Located in the 1912-built Jones House (the former site of Restaurant Holmes) the new location struck all the right notes for Khoury I want to be home for my kids at night,” she says Khoury had long admired the Jones House and when it became available and I was envious of this amazing historic house being a restaurant,” says Khoury While the house had great bones, Khoury infused it with personal touches. She started by painting the walls in Raging Sea by Sherwin-Williams, a green more soothing than its name suggests, and hiring artist Aliya Smith to paint a purple and yellow floral mural on the ceiling in the back dining room as well as a wallpaper-like pattern of yellow California poppies in the front room homey touches like plants and knickknacks that add to the Hen Mother charm weave throughout “I refurbished some of the existing tables that were in the restaurant We got all of our chairs off Facebook marketplace and redid those many of which were sourced from Goodwill or gifted to the restaurant by regulars “I unboxed a box that someone gave me a year and a half ago of their grandma’s China,” says Khoury guests can expect to find most of the same items as the Johns Creek location with the exception of the energy bowl and a more streamlined omelette offering Exclusive to the Alpharetta location are the breakfast tacos and oat pancakes as well as the addition of chicken and tuna salad sandwiches at lunch This location also boasts a cocktail menu with drinks like “brunch punch” (rum and strawberry-arbol syrup) and an espresso “frapp-ini.” For Khoury a basic espresso martini wouldn’t do: “I don’t like espresso martinis “I would wake up in the middle of the night and be like the breakfast martini has to be f**king delicious.” She ultimately settled on a drink akin to an Italian frappé made with Nescafe instant coffee and vodka The poster got a Hen Mother twist (the bologna was replaced with a cinnamon roll) but it’s a way to honor her entrepreneurial father that kickstarted her culinary journey “I feel I so inclined to just commemorate my dad with this restaurant.” Time will tell what happens with James Cook.. Shileen and Justin Lunelli are the proud new owners of the popular Voyageurs’ Lodge and Cookhouse on Highway 17 at Batchawana Bay The Sault couple purchased the business from longtime owners Frank and Gail O’Connor with the Lunellis officially becoming its new owners Jan “We've always enjoyed it out here We’ve liked going to Pancake Bay and Harmony for the last 20 years I’ve just always loved coming to this area It feels like home and when the lodge came up for sale I wanted it,” Shileen told SooToday was owned and operated by the O’Connors since 2003 It was put up for sale in 2021 and the Lunellis made an offer for the property in August 2024.  The iconic Voyageurs’ Lodge and Cookhouse site includes the River Rock Gift Shop the former owners operated a popular restaurant at the lodge for many years but later transformed it into a smaller but equally popular deli takeout “We’re going to keep what they already have We’ll have the Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich poutine and fish tacos,” Shileen said she would like to make some additions to the deli’s menu ,as well as transform the site into more of a dine out experience for visitors “I wouldn't mind offering something weekly on Fridays for instance I’d like to offer something like a smoked brisket I'm looking into what we can offer as a dinner on Fridays,” Shileen said That wouldn’t mean a full scale indoor restaurant but Shileen and Justin want to provide a pleasant outdoor experience for visitors who would like to stay for a bite “There were three or four picnic tables outside I'd not like to have an actual restaurant but some sort of a dining out experience for customers with a waitress that comes out and asks if they want anything The place would be something to bring people out to just come and enjoy the north I have a lot of thoughts going through my head about that right now,” Shileen said The lodge’s popular apple fritters are staying “The apple fritters are very big and they're tasty they're not going anywhere,” Shileen said Shileen has owned and operated Soaps By Shé - selling high-quality bath and body products - for the last six years at 518 Queen St “In the first week of April we will be opening up the gas station and the fritter house we'll open up the deli and gift shop,” Shileen said There is at least one major feature the Lunellis are thinking of adding to the site We obviously have to wait for the summer but we would love to have some sort of a campground back there where people could come and bring a trailer or a tent or we could have trailers to rent,” Shileen said The Lunellis are looking forward to their first year in business at the Voyageurs’ Lodge and Cookhouse.  “It’s been a dream come true,” Shileen said This story was made possible by our Community Leaders Program partner Thank you to Northside Toyota for helping to expand local news coverage in Sault Ste. Marie, have frequented spots such as Pancake Bay and Harmony Beach for the last 20 years, and had always talked about one day owning The Voyageurs’ Lodge, situated on Batchewana Bay, across Highway 17 from Lake Superior.  “I wanted this place because when I walked into the area, it felt like home,” said Shileen.  Justin added, “When it comes to the Voyager, you’re not selling an apple fritter, you’re not selling gas — you’re selling an idea.”  That idea is “The North,” which has ties to the history of Indigenous people of the area, Lake Superior, and the surrounding forests and “small-town” communities.  Justin and Shileen plan to keep the essence of the lodge the same and are not planning any renovations in the near future. “Frank and Gail did a fantastic job. They kind of made the Voyageur what it is,” said Justin, adding that the iconic apple fritters and Highway 17 North Apparel aren’t going anywhere.  One component they are considering adding is a small campground behind the main lodge with a trailer for rent to provide more lodging options for guests.  While The Voyageurs’ Lodge is currently closed to the public, the Lunellis are hosting a team of contractors working on power lines in the area, providing them with lodging, breakfast, and dinner as they also prepare for the upcoming season.  The new owners will also restock the gift shop and connecting with local artisans, as the space is currently being used as a dining area for the contractors.  The Voyageur previously operated a sit-down restaurant but transitioned to a grab-and-go model a few years ago, with outdoor seating for patrons. The Lunellis have no immediate plans to bring back indoor dining, and plan to keep the current menu.  They anticipate reopening to the public April 1, with guidance from the O’Connors. “They’re passing on their knowledge the best they can,” said Justin. “Frank and Gail know the place inside and out,” adding that he and Shileen are grateful for their ongoing support.  The O’Connors, as mentioned in their farewell post, plan to travel, spend time with family, and renovate a home in Sault Ste. Marie. Frank also hopes to write a book and open a woodshop.  They expressed gratitude to their extended family for their “constant love and support” and acknowledged their staff as the “backbone of this place.”  The Lunellis have also relied on their own family to help them prepare for their first season as owners.  One unexpected challenge has been the heavy snowfall and frequent highway closures. “When Mother Nature wants to snow, she sure likes to snow,” Justin said.  Looking ahead, they are uncertain whether they will keep the Voyageur open during winter.  “We love the Voyageur — we wouldn’t have bought it if we didn’t, and we don’t plan on changing it,” said Justin. “And please come and support if you can.”  The Local Journalism Initiative is made possible through funding from the federal government.  transmission or republication strictly prohibited This website uses cookies to personalize your content (including ads), and allows us to analyze our traffic.
