It is believed that the five occupants of a Volkswagen Polo were en route to Kuruman when it collided head-on with a truck near Koopmansfontein.
The MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Abraham Vosloo, extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of Thabo Ramaswe and the other four passengers of the Polo vehicle.
He said that Ramaswe, who was on leave at the time of the accident, was stationed at the Finance Directorate of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism.
“We wish the family strength and fortitude during this period of grief and call upon everyone to allow the families to mourn their loved ones with the dignity that they deserve,” said Vosloo.
Northern Cape SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the Delportshoop police were investigating a culpable homicide case after five men died in an accident near Koopmansfontein on April 6, at about 4.45pm.
“A silver VW Polo and a truck were involved in a head-on collision that caused the VW Polo to roll down a slope next to the road. All five male occupants of the Polo died on the scene and the truck driver escaped the accident unscathed,” said Kock.
He indicated that the accident happened on the R31 about seven kilometres outside Koopmansfontein.
“The road was closed and eventually opened to traffic again at about 9.30pm,” added Kock.
“Anyone with information can call Detective Sergeant Zenzile Baba on 082 448 4850. The investigation continues.”
TWO OF the killers who were sentenced to life imprisonment for the double murder of DA councillor Johannes Baatjies and his business partner Jeffrey Nouse in Danielskuil in 2016, have been handed additional sentences for housebreaking as well as the illegal possession of hunting rifles and ammunition.
The accused, Zoniselo Richard Mgawu, Thompson Charlie Mphondomisa and Justice Floyd Chiloane, were sentenced in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court last week.
The incident took place on a farm near Danielskuil in November 2015 prior to the double murders.
Mgawu and Mphondomisa were each sentenced on June 23 to 10 years’ imprisonment for housebreaking with the intent to steal and theft, five years for the illegal possession of ammunition and 10 years for the illegal possession of firearms.
They were also declared unfit to own a firearm.
Chiloane, an engineer, was sentenced to R100,000 or two years’ imprisonment for the theft of firearms and ammunition, R100,000 or two years’ imprisonment for the illegal possession of ammunition and R400,000 or six years’ imprisonment for the illegal possession of firearms.
He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The investigating officer in the case, Lieutenant-Colonel Dolf Louwrens, who has since retired, indicated that the stolen firearms were not linked to the murders.
The State was represented by Wentzel Engelbrecht.
Baatjies was murdered shortly before he was to be sworn in as a DA councillor at Kgatelopele Municipality.
Baatjies and Nouse were lured to a business meeting on the road between Postmasburg and Danielskuil, where Baatjies was shot twice in the head and once in the torso while Nouse was shot in the face.
Mgawu and Mphondomisa were convicted and received double life sentences for the murders.
Mphondomisa also received a four-year prison sentence for the illegal possession of a 9mm firearm and ammunition.
KEY ANC leaders in a local region and the Northern Cape province are seeking legal advice and intend to open criminal charges following an explosive series of messages that seek to implicate them as being the masterminds behind the cold-blooded “political killing” of DA councillor Johannes Baaitjies
Baaitjes and his business partner Jeffrey Nouse were lured to a bogus business meeting between Danielskuil and Postmasburg in 2016
They were shot multiple times and left for dead along the side of the road
Baaitjies was killed the day before he was to be sworn in as a councillor at the opposition-led Kgatelopele Municipality in the ZF Mgcawu District
The murder resulted in a hung municipality
as the ANC held three seats and opposition parties had secured four seats during the local government elections
Four accused in the matter - Zoniselo Richard Magawu
Thompson Mncedisi Mphondomisa and Matthews Legodu - are currently serving double life sentences for the murders
was sentenced to two 18-year imprisonment terms
were withdrawn following the death of a Section 204 witness
Mgcera was elected as the mayor of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality in 2020
Mgawu and Mphondomisa were sentenced in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court to a further 10 years imprisonment each for an unrelated housebreaking case as well as the illegal possession of hunting rifles and ammunition
A series of messages have now surfaced that seek to implicate senior ANC leaders as being the masterminds behind the killings
While the origin of the messages has not been verified
the key ANC members mentioned are convinced that they know the identity of the sender and are taking the threats seriously
The author of the WhatsApp messages accused the ANC leadership of abandoning him to languish in jail and of using him as a scapegoat
“They must talk to a judge and at least reduce my sentence to 10 years
Then they must give me R10 million to start my life,” reads one of the messages
The sender also requested financial assistance to fund his appeal as well as to provide support for his family
“I really did not expect that my own movement would neglect me
They must not think that they will get away with it
He claimed that a former Northern Cape premier had assisted him “in good faith”
He further threatened to expose senior ANC members who had allegedly conspired to kill Baaitjes to enable the party to regain control of the local municipality
“I don't have peace of mind that my leaders are behind me after they tasked me to appoint assassins for Mr Baaitjies
and I thought that I would get financial support from the leadership
They are free and are enjoying top-class lives
My children are struggling to make ends meet and my mom is not well.”
He added that his family had been left to suffer without any assistance as he had lost his income
“I am struggling to source funding for my appeal
You can imagine what my children and wife have gone through for the past eight years
“I unsuccessfully tried on a number of occasions to ask for help for food and medical funds
I never even received any prison visits because they have disassociated themselves from me
The author of the messages further recommended that the implicated individuals be excluded from the ANC candidate lists for the upcoming elections
“These individuals did not think twice before misusing me
I am of the view that it will cause the ANC more harm in the outcome of the elections if this is not addressed properly
“I have had to carry the cross of a life sentence for something I did not do
I was not the one who wanted the DA councillor or his associate dead
Now is the time to become selfish for my family's sake
One of the persons who was mentioned in the messages explained that he had assisted the author as he understood how difficult life was behind bars
“I can no longer afford to fund him anymore
I have appointed a lawyer to deal with the matter as I view his attempts as trying to extort money from me
His aspersions are damaging my integrity.”
He stated that the messages were purposefully being circulated ahead of the elections
“Everyone has their own agendas at this time
The accused were acting of their own accord and admitted that it was all about tenders
It is only one of the accused persons who is trying to extort money.”
ANC ZF Mgcawu regional secretary David Kazi stated that he had seen the “gross allegations” circulating on social media
ANC provincial secretary Deshi Ngxanga questioned how a sentenced offender had access to a cellphone
“He used to work for the ANC constituency office in Danielskuil
I stopped his salary when I was elected provincial secretary as I felt that someone accused of murder should not be entitled to a salary,” said Ngxanga
A bank cheque was made out in his name in the amount of R32 673.78 in 2017 in lieu of a three-month advance on his salary
Ngxanga stated that no staff member had been given permission to pay any advance to the accused
“I was advised that the salary was stopped much later
after I had instructed that the payments be stopped.”
Ngxanga indicated that the accused was soliciting bribes from the ANC
“He is threatening to implicate ANC members for the murders that he was convicted of.”
He also pointed out that the ANC would never give anyone a mandate of that nature
ANC ZF Mgcawu regional chairperson Abraham Vosloo believed that law enforcement authorities should investigate the origin of the messages
He also questioned why the threats were surfacing shortly before the upcoming elections on May 29
“It appears to be an orchestrated attempt to unseat certain ANC leaders by having them removed from the candidate list,” Vosloo pointed out
says geologists started with evaluation and drilling this week to determine the cause of the sinkhole after it formed about two week ago after heavy rains in the area
She says they cannot say when the road will be reopened and urged the public to still detour via Postmasburg
Robertson added that the recent rain in the area caused no further damage at the site
She says they will keep the public informed regarding the latest developments

``Witnesses further alleged egregious misconduct
with officers resorting to coercive tactics
including requesting pepper spray after emerging from Ebuka’s residence’'
The South African Police continued their senseless killing of Nigerians in that country on Friday in Danielskuil
with a 43-year-old Nigerian national from Obosi
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) disclosed the killing of Mr
Ebuka Muoka in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary
His killing came on the heels of the South African government enacting landmark legislation to address the scourge of hate crimes and hate speech on May 8
when President Cyril Ramaphosa assented to it
The law came into force after two Nigerians
“NUSA profoundly mourns and condemns the tragic killing of Mr
a 43-year-old Nigerian national from Obosi
paint a harrowing picture of law enforcement officers storming their residence
compelling her to evacuate to shield their young child from witnessing the violence
“Ebuka was then subjected to assault and coerced to produce drugs allegedly in his possession
they forcibly escorted him to a waste dump
alleging he had concealed illegal substances there
“Witnesses further alleged egregious misconduct
including requesting pepper spray after emerging from Ebuka’s residence,’’
Miller said that in spite of employing drug detection methods
yet the relentless interrogation tragically led to his demise
He added that the lack of proper crime scene preservation raises grave doubts about the integrity of the investigation
“Of deep concern is the police refusal to issue a statement on the case at the time of this press release
and has denied the family and friends of the deceased their right to open a case docket on the case
“The wife of the deceased was intimidated when she approached the police to open a case on the demise of her late husband
“This appalling incident underscores a distressing trend of police abuse targeting Nigerians in the Northern Cape Province
“There have been similar incidents like this since March in Kimberley
involving unfounded accusations of drug dealing and police violence not leading to death but serious injuries and traumas to those affected,’’ he said
Miller lamented the tragic death of another Nigerian
He said that the NUSA urgently calls for an exhaustive
impartial inquiry into Ebuka Muoka’s killing and the broader systemic issues of police abuse in the Northern Cape
He appealed that justice prevailed for the deceased and that the rights and safety of all individuals
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased
Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time
“We also stand in unwavering solidarity with the Nigerian community in the Northern Cape Province
offering our unwavering support and unity as they navigate through this tragedy
we acknowledge the visit of Kgatelopele Local Municipality
where she expressed shock and offered her condolences.’’
Miller said that the Mayor’s call for calm and unity was commendable
urging the Nigerian community to uphold the rule of law
“Let us remain united and not let this situation sow division among us
we must persevere in supporting one another and advocating for justice and accountability
“We reaffirm our commitment to fostering positive relations between the Nigerian community
we strive for a society characterised by mutual respect and devoid of crime and injustice,’’ he said

Major Sinkhole Threatens to Swallow Road to Kuruman in South Africa
Two videos – including drone footage and a close-up view – show a massive and developing sink hole that is threatening to swallow part of the R31
Both videos were filmed just over a week ago

The Department of Roads and Public Works has permanently closed the road after locals from Kuruman shared the videos and their safety concerns with the sinkhole encroaching so close to the road
According to local reports the sink hole was formed a couple of weeks ago after heavy rains in the region
A couple of spelunkers (cave explorers) have already climbed down to explore the holes
Netwerk24 reported that Karin Human said she found the walls to be “almost like boulders in a river – there were no sharp edges” and that at a few places “there were extraordinary crystals that are thousands of years old”
At the time he said it appeared to be about 300 metres long
This video was also filmed on 12 January 2017
