Two people were injured in separate shootings Saturday night in Rotterdam and Dordrecht, both of which remain under investigation, according to NOS. A 19-year-old man turned himself in to police in Dordrecht after the shooting
while no arrests have been made in Rotterdam
A 44-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting in Dordrecht around 11:40 p.m
The incident took place near the intersection of Prunuslaan and Rozemarijnstraat in the Dubbeldam neighborhood
According to local news reports, the woman was in a vehicle equipped with a cherry picker when shots were fired from another car. She was conscious and received treatment at the hospital for her injuries.
Separately, in Rotterdam, a 43-year-old man was shot around 11:35 p.m. at a home on Kabeljauwsestraat in the city’s Oude Noorden district. The victim was conscious following the incident and was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to police.

Dutch supplier of fuels Titan Clean Fuels (Titan) has completed its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at the Wilhelminahaven Harbour in the Port of Dordrecht.
FlexFueler001, one of the company’s LNG bunkering vessels, delivered LNG to Ramelia, owned by Rederi AB Älvtank and operated by Furetank. The ship was christened in 2019.
Ramelia is 149.5 meters long, with a breadth of 22.8 meters and a depth of 12.1 meters. The ship features a Wärtsilä 9L34DF 4500 kW engine and is able to travel at 14.5 knots. A 2019-built vessel sails under the flag of Sweden.
Titan’s fleet consists of six owned and chartered vessels: Titan Vision, Titan Unikum, Alice Cosulich, FlexFueler001, FlexFueler002 and Optimus.
Recently, the supplier completed what is said to be the first-ever LNG bunkering operation by ship in the port of Cuxhaven, Germany.

A large group of officers entered the facility in the morning
A police truck was parked outside to analyze any materials seized during the search
Two prosecutors on site confirmed the raid was part of the ongoing criminal investigation
“We are looking for information,” one said
“It’s not unusual for this to happen in a case like this
A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service told AD that the search was connected to the case but declined to specify what was being sought
Searches are typically carried out when there are grounds to believe that evidence is being withheld
Chemours acknowledged the raid but gave few details
“Chemours received an unannounced visit from the authorities today,” a company spokesperson said
That complaint has since grown into a broader case, with approximately 1,600 individuals now listed as co-filers. Ficq said Tuesday’s raid signaled that prosecutors are taking the case seriously. “The health interests of local residents are clearly being taken seriously by the Public Prosecution Service,” she told AD. “I’m very curious about the outcome of the investigation.”
The legal action seeks to hold executives personally liable for knowingly releasing toxic substances into the surrounding area. The complaint alleges that Chemours and its predecessor, DuPont, continued to emit harmful chemicals for decades despite knowing the health risks.
The case gained national attention following a 2023 broadcast by Dutch investigative program Zembla, which revealed that DuPont—now operating as Chemours—possessed hundreds of internal documents showing it had known since the 1960s about the dangers of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), a group of synthetic chemicals used in manufacturing.
Those documents reportedly show that DuPont knew as far back as the 1990s that it was contaminating groundwater beneath and around the factory with PFAS. The company also remained silent for decades about the risks of PFOA, a specific PFAS compound linked to cancer and reproductive issues.
Chemours has long been the focus of public criticism and lawsuits related to its use of PFAS in producing items such as nonstick cookware coatings. However, this marks the first time the company has been targeted in a criminal investigation.
News of the raid was welcomed by local residents and environmental activists. Meta Kamphuis, one of the original complainants, arrived at the scene to see it firsthand. “I cried with joy when I heard the police were raiding the place,” she told AD. “If they didn’t suspect anything, they wouldn’t do a raid, right? They don’t raid for sweaty feet—it costs too much money. My day couldn’t be better.”

With four gold medals in last weekend’s third Olympic qualifier, Netherlands star Suzanne Schulting returns to home soil for the next World Cup outing in Dordrecht.
Schulting was victorious in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m over the weekend in Debrecen, Hungary. She also triumphed in the 3000m relay alongside Selma Poutsma, Xandra Velzeboer and Yara van Kerkhof, proving that, while she may be out in a league of her own in the individual events, there is great strength-in-depth among her compatriots.
Competition for Schulting may well be found among a veteran of the sport, with Arianna Fontana picking up another podium finish last Saturday in the final of the 500m. L’Angelo Biondo, as she is known in her native Italy, recently became the oldest ever skater to stand on a World Cup podium but is showing no signs of slowing down after winning medals at all four of the editions of the Olympics she has skated in.
One of the greatest sights of last weekend’s World Cup race in Debrecen was seeing brothers Shaolin and Shaoang Liu pass the line together in the 500m race, separated only by the long end of a blade. The photo finish, which saw Shaolin named the victor by the finest of margins, showed the Hungarian siblings are on hot form heading into race four of the World Cup season.
Another skater in fine fettle after three rounds is People’s Republic of China’s Ren Ziwei. In Hungary, he was victorious in the 1500m final ahead of fast-rising Canadian Pascal Dion. Ren now sits second behind Shaolin Liu in the overall 500m standings, fourth in the 1000m standings and second in the 1500m.
The aforementioned Dion leads the 1000m standings on 20800 points, with Russian Semen Elistratov ahead in the 1500m standings on 15300 points.
The men’s 5000m relay standings are much more competitive, although having won the last two races in Japan and Hungary, Canada look to be the favourites heading into World Cup number four. The Canadians top the rankings on 22621 points, with Hungary looking up at them from second position on 20800 points. Third in the standings are People’s Republic of China who have amassed 16397 points from the three World Cups to date.

In response, Chemours immediately shut down the affected pipeline, and efforts are underway to investigate the cause of the incident. A new pressure-relief plate will be installed, and the company plans to carry out further investigations throughout the day. According to a statement from the company, the leak was brief, and the cause has not yet been definitively determined.
The environmental watchdog, DCMR, has not dispatched a team to the site, as the emission took place quickly, and the cause remains undetermined. DCMR has requested Chemours to provide an update on the situation by 3:00 PM on Tuesday, including a report on the cause of the leak.
Despite the brevity of the emission, the release of tetrafluoroethylene is a serious concern due to its potential health impacts. Tetrafluoroethylene is a colorless, odorless gas used in the production of several products, including Teflon. While its immediate health effects can include dizziness, headaches, visual disturbances, suffocation, and loss of consciousness, prolonged exposure can lead to more severe health consequences.
Exposure to tetrafluoroethylene can have significant short-term effects on human health. Increased exposure can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, vision issues, suffocation, and a loss of consciousness. Prolonged exposure is more concerning, as research has shown that tetrafluoroethylene is a potential carcinogen.

A disturbing act of animal cruelty was discovered Wednesday morning on a golf course in Dordrecht. A hedgehog was found impaled on a flagstick, with swastikas drawn in the sand nearby. The incident has left golf course staff and local authorities shocked.
Peter Bolleurs, 35, a greenkeeper at the golf course, described the scene as horrifying. He was notified by a colleague who came across the mutilated hedgehog during her rounds on the course. “The photos she sent me were beyond anything I ever expected to see,” said Bolleurs. “The poor animal was brutally attacked and left on the flagstick, covered in sand and blood. My colleague was completely shaken.”
The condition of the hedgehog suggested severe suffering before its death. “This is absolutely sickening,” Bolleurs said. “Whoever did this must have no regard for life.”
Bolleurs noted that this was not the first time the course had been targeted by vandals. “Parts of the course are open to the public, and we’ve had issues with vandalism before. But this... this is something else. It keeps getting worse,” he said.
While the golf course has surveillance cameras in restricted areas, the public parts of the property remain unmonitored. Bolleurs expressed frustration over the lack of security measures. “We really need cameras here, but the public nature of this part of the course complicates things,” he said.
The golf course management confirmed the incident and corroborated Bolleurs’ account but declined to comment further. Staff found potential evidence near the site, including dog tracks. However, Bolleurs dismissed the idea that dogs could be responsible for the hedgehog’s injuries. “Dogs don’t do this. Whoever did this is a person, and they need to be found,” he said.
Authorities are investigating the incident, but no suspects have been identified yet. The use of swastikas, drawn near the scene, has raised concerns about possible ideological motives behind the attack.
The shocking nature of the act has reignited calls for harsher penalties for animal cruelty. The Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of laws and for jail sentences in cases of severe abuse.
“This is not just vandalism; this is a violent act against a defenseless animal,” a spokesperson for the organization said.

On the 28th of June, a christening ceremony took place in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, marking the delivery of a new Damen ASD Tug 3212 by Damen Shipyards to leading Dutch towage company Muller Dordrecht. Named En Avant 26, the vessel was the third to be delivered by Damen to Muller Dordrecht in the past three years, the others being another Damen ASD Tug 3212 En Avant 25 and a Z-drive Pushboat built by Concordia Damen.
The En Avant 26 was built at Damen’s specialist tug yard Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Haiphong, Vietnam, and delivered to the Netherlands in May along with another ten Damen tugs on board the BigLift heavy lift vessel Happy Star. From placing the order to taking delivery was just over a year thanks to Damen’s policy of building its popular vessels on spec.
The winterisation package for operations in high latitudes has also been specified, which includes additional insulation, heated windows and a special heating system where engine heat is used to heat the accommodation. This will enable it to operate in the Baltic Sea all year round if needed, as well as the waters of western and southern Europe.
Bram Muller, CEO at Muller Dordrecht, said “While we do not aspire to being the biggest tug operator in Europe, we do aim to be the best. Our Damen tugs enable us to deliver additional added value to our customers thanks to their quality and Damen’s excellent after-sales support.”

Dutchwoman doubles up in Rotterdam to extend overall race lead as Vos rounds out podium
The yellow jersey came out of the slipstream of her great sprint rival in the last 100 metres of the flat 68km stage and came around to score another victory and extend her overall lead. Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) finished third
Audrey De Keersmaeker (Lotto-Dstny) attacked
She held off the peloton for 30km before being caught with 9.8km to go
leaving the sprint teams to set up for the final
the stage covered only 69.7km before finishing in Rotterdam where a 6.3km time trial will be held in the afternoon
After only two kilometres on relatively wide roads
a crash occurred when the peloton was funnelled down a road that was narrowed by barriers
Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal) and Amanda Spratt (Lidl-Trek) were among the riders that went down
and the peloton split in three as many more riders were held up by the crash and had to chase back
Laura Tomasi (Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi) launched the first attack but did not get away
quickly getting a ten-second gap on the peloton
The Belgian rider's advantage fluctuated between 10 and 31 seconds as she used narrower and windy roads to extend her gap while the peloton took back time on wide
De Keersmaeker was caught just inside the 10km mark
and the sprinters' trains got into position
and Lidl-Trek all lined up next to each other
but the last 4.5km with nine turns and several bridge crossings strung out the field
and SD Worx-Protime were in the driving seat coming onto the finishing straight
Barbara Guarischi (SD Worx-Protime) dropped her sprinter off with about 250 metres to go
and Wiebes sprinted down the right-hand barriers
Kool came up in her slipstream but was boxed in by Vos who tried to hold Wiebes' wheel
When Vos couldn't follow Wiebes' pace anymore
coming alongside Wiebes and beating her to the line to take her second stage victory in a row

The remediation of dozens of vegetable gardens near the Chemours factory in Dordrecht would cost tens of millions of euros
a chemical substance that falls under the collective name PFAS
The factory emitted this substance in large quantities for years
Chemours has promised to pay the costs for the remediation
1,300 locations require cleaning for fruit and vegetables from these gardens to be able to be consumed without any health risks
“A rough estimate is that this will cost between 25 and 50 million euros,” he said at the delivery of his first project
to gain experience in remediating vegetable gardens
the top 50 centimeters of contaminated soil has been dug up and replaced by clean soil
The allotment grower planted some garlic plants in it on Monday
director An Lemaire of Chemours and alderman Roelant Bijderwieden of Sliedrecht
Members of the local protest group “Stop PFAS
stop Chemours” also attended the gathering
but they were forced to leave the premises
They followed Lemaire’s speech from behind a fence
walked with the Chemours director when she left the vegetable garden
The location is situated opposite the factory
on the other side of the Beneden-Merwede river
The director said during her speech that the company is hoping that initiatives like this and other concrete steps will help them regain nearby residents’ trust
Lemaire said that she knows that the company has a long way to go in order to achieve this
“We are trying to put a point behind the past
We want to do this with concrete actions and measures,” said Lemaire in Sliedrecht
"We want to address the concerns of local residents and eliminate them," Lemaire repeated over and over again
She also emphasized that Chemours has "enormously" reduced the emission of harmful substances
"The situation is very different now than it was a few years ago
We are at less than 1 percent emissions compared to what it was
We are doing everything we can to eliminate the concerns
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) advised people to not eat anything from vegetable gardens within a kilometer of Chemours in 2022
After research was conducted in the municipalities of Dordrecht
the RIVM concluded that the vegetables had higher concentrations of PFAS
PFAS are chemical substances that can be damaging for people’s health and the environment
The court thinks that Chemours (which used to be called DuPont) are responsible for the damage that occurred as a result of their pollution on the surfaces of Dordrecht
Papendrecht and Sliedrecht between 1984 and 1998
The chemical company agreed with the municipalities to help and pay for the remediation of the vegetable gardens and the Merwedelanden
which is a swimming lake that is also polluted with PFAS

Equans has been owned by French construction company Bouygues
which acquired Equans from fellow French multinational ENGIE
DNV acted as the developer’s technical advisor during the due diligence phase and will serve as the lender’s technical advisor throughout its lifetime
which has been one of the big challenges for developers on the congested power grid to date
The BESS will charge from the grid at off-peak times and when solar PV and wind generation are abundant
outputting energy when needed during peak demand
Project Amethyst is due to go into commercial operation in early 2026
and the energy trading arm of Dutch utility Eneco will optimise the asset’s market operation to market forecasts provided by data analytics company EnAppSys
The project was publicly announced by Dispatch and Eneco in mid-June
Dispatch’s finance partners are Belgian infrastructure investment fund EPICo² and Macquarie Capital
Dispatch said in June that the project marks “the first of many in a strategic alliance” that the developer has formed with Australia’s Macquarie Capital
The pair intend to collaborate on up to 3GWh of battery storage projects over the next seven years in the Netherlands
the 2-hour project was designed in collaboration with local authorities
The modular design of the 144 Fluence Cube BESS units and site layout have enabled it to optimise space utilisation
The company also said the local permitting process was “streamlined” to expedite development
While the claim to be the largest project in construction to date in the Netherlands holds true
Project Amethyst looks set to be joined by many standalone and hybrid BESS projects of smaller or similar scale and a handful of much larger projects in the coming years
The country’s largest operational BESS to date, the 30MW/68MWh ‘Pollux’ project by developer-owner SemperPower
went online just before the end of last year
Equans is working on a 35MW/100MWh project by its former owner ENGIE
also to be supplied and integrated by Fluence
which while having a larger storage capacity in megawatt-hours than Amethyst will be paired with a solar PV plant
Meanwhile, two developers, Lion Storage and Giga Storage, are both hoping to start construction on projects in the country which will each be over 300MW/1,000MWh before the end of this year
In September, ESN Premium spoke with representatives of developer LC Energy, which won an irrevocable permit for a 500MW/2,000MWh standalone project in Groningen
managing director of LC Energy—a joint venture (JV) between the UK’s Low Carbon and Dutch engineers QING—said that the battery storage market has been unlocked by reforms to grid fees
which lowered costs levied onto battery projects connecting to the power grid by about 65%
no projects were able to achieve financial close in the Netherlands
it remains challenging to develop large-scale BESS projects due to the scarcity of land in the densely populated country and zoning laws that make it difficult to site projects in mostly agricultural areas
Many substations where batteries could connect to the transmission system in the Netherlands are often in rural areas

FC Dordrecht has become the first Dutch football club to officially leave X — the social network formerly known as Twitter and now owned by Elon Musk — citing a growing disconnect between the platform’s current direction and the club’s core values
the Dutch second division club made it clear: “We no longer want to be associated with this platform.”
“The acquisition of the X network by xAI (a company owned by Elon Musk) has changed the character and content of this platform,” the statement read
We do not want to be associated with a platform where these values are being tested.”
Dordrecht confirmed that all communication will now move to other social media platforms
following the same path taken by three German clubs — St
and Werder Bremen — who abandoned X earlier this year for similar political and ethical reasons
All three German sides have since shifted their communication to BlueSky
This marks a new chapter in the growing movement among European football clubs distancing themselves from Elon Musk’s controversial platform
While X remains a central hub for global football discourse
its evolving moderation policies and ownership ties have sparked increasing discomfort — especially among clubs that place high value on social responsibility and inclusion
FC Dordrecht’s exit is symbolic — a relatively small club taking a strong moral stance in an increasingly complex digital environment

Dutch towage company Muller Dordrecht has christened its latest Damen tug En Avant 26
Source: Damen
The vessel is third to be delivered by Damen Shipyards to Muller Dordrecht in the past three years
It previously received the sister vessel En Avant 25
as well as a Z-drive push boat built by Concordia Damen.
En Avant 26 was built at the Damen Song Cam shipyard in Haiphong, Vietnam and was one of eleven Damen tugs onboard the Happy Star delivery from Vietnam to the Netherlands in May.
The 32 m-long vessel can deliver more than 80 tonnes of bollard pull
making it suitable for handling large container vessels in harbour and offshore towage operations
Muller Dordrecht has a history of providing towage
It also partnered with EFO and committed to a set of measures to minimise emissions from their respective transport activities

Roughly nine out of every ten Dutch people think measures are needed to combat pollution by PFAS, Ipsos I&O reported after conducting research for the AD. The study showed that residents of Dordrecht and surrounding areas are more concerned than the average person about the health risks in their living areas caused by the presence of PFAS. According to the newspaper, the only PFAS-producing factory in the Netherlands is the Chemours factory in Dordrecht.
According to researchers, 23 percent of the residents in the Dordrecht region are very concerned about health risks in their living environments, while seven percent of the people in the rest of the Netherlands are concerned.
Almost two-thirds (63%) of the residents in Dordrecht and surrounding areas think there are many or some health risks due to PFAS. A fifth of people in the rest of the Netherlands, excluding the Dordrecht region, believe this.
Just under a quarter of the people in the Netherlands are taking measures that they think will reduce their chances of being exposed to PFAS compared to one in three people in the Dordrecht region who do this. The most common measure is buying fewer items that contain PFAS.
Dordrecht residents are taking increasingly varied measures. One of the measures is that 59 percent have stopped eating or now eat fewer eggs made by chickens owned by private individuals. This measure is being followed by 26 percent of the population in the rest of the country.
They also swim less in natural areas (58 percent and 19 percent) and often no longer eat vegetables or fruit from vegetable gardens (49 percent and 14 percent).
Around six in ten Dutch residents are in favor of PFAS measures, such as stricter rules on production, more development of alternatives, and better check-ups of the water and companies.
Around 37 percent of the residents in the Dordrecht area mentioned closing Chemours as a suitable measure compared to 23 percent of the residents in the rest of the country who mentioned this. For the people outside of Dordrecht, this was the least chosen measure.
Around 46 percent of Dordrecht's residents support a general ban on PFAS, while 38 percent of the rest of the country also sees this as a suitable measure.
PFAS, or per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, contain chemical materials that are hardly biodegradable and have been linked to cancer, higher cholesterol, and reproductive defects.
Members of the I&O research panel, which consists of 1,645 Dutch people, filled out a questionnaire for the research. In addition, 504 panel members from the Dordrecht region also filled out the questionnaire.

Swimming in lake Merwelanden in Dordrecht is now permitted again
as measurements showed that the PFAS concentrations are far below the RIVM's advice values
the province of Zuid-Holland gave negative swimming advice for the lake
Waterschap Hollandse Delta determined that the PFAS values have dropped significantly
and the province has withdrawn the negative advice
"We are pleased that we have succeeded in reducing the PFAS concentrations to well below the RIVM limit value and that people can swim responsibly in the lake again this summer," says provincial executive Arne Weverling
especially if you are not going on holiday or cannot go to the swimming pools," adds Dordrecht alderman Tanja de Jonge
"We need to investigate further where the PFAS comes from
and it needs to be cleaned up because we are talking about the health of residents here."
The popular recreational lake was flushed in early June
which is also done when there is blue-green algae
The PFAS levels in the water then slowly decreased
they were at about one-sixth of what the RIVM considers irresponsible for swimming water
The institute determines these values based on the effects of the various types of PFAS has on a person's health
Swimming in the lake is possible until September 30
the investigation into the source of the pollution continues
Chemours has previously promised to contribute to the cleaning of the Merwelandenplas
and Molenlanden have held the plastics manufacturer liable for the pollution of the groundwater by PFAS on their territory
The judge considers this proven for at least the period between 1984 and 1998
Hundreds of people participated in a protest march against Chemours in Dordrecht
The protesters walked from the Oranjepark in Dordrecht via the De Staart district to the Baanhoekweg where Chemours is located
including national and regional politicians from GroenLinks
there was a large Greenpeace banner in front of the gate of the Chemours factory with the text 'We want clean air.' Scientist Rebellion acitivists also joined the Dordrecht residents in the protest march and claimed on X that Chemours is the biggest source of PFAS pollution in the Netherlands
The action then continued in a nearby park
local residents had emptied buckets of contaminated soil and water in front of the factory gate for the 219th time
They have been doing this every Saturday morning for years
"Chemours is doing everything it can to make as much money as possible at all costs," the organization of the protest march said
And they pull out all the stops: not providing transparent information to governments
not taking responsibility for the consequences of their actions."
The activists want Chemours to stop all discharges
and pay all costs for health research and water treatment
They also believe that the company should compensate local residents who have suffered damage from PFAS emissions
Chemours said in a statement: "We listen to the opinions and concerns that people express about our factory
This is done not only through demonstrations but also in direct contact
And we are always open to a conversation," the chemical factory said
"The conversations show that we ultimately share the same goal: reducing our emissions as far as possible."
The factory has been in Dordrecht since the 1960s
the company emitted large quantities of substances that fall under the collective name PFAS
Some of these are dangerous to people and the environment
Chemours says it has significantly reduced emissions in recent years
it produces "essential materials" responsibly
including for medical care and the energy transition
