qualitative insights from Secura’s private security assessments and Expatica’s expat community reports help provide a fuller picture of safety perceptions and conditions on the ground
These towns consistently show low violent crime
These towns report high levels of violent crime

Residents at the Durban CBD have started a campaign to remove homeless people and drug addicts from parks and other public areas
Albert Park and Warwick Junction are among the areas that have been occupied following a raid by authorities under a flyover to the M4 next to the port in October last year
Residents say they want to be able to use these public areas without fearing for their safety
Homeless people moved into Albert Park following a raid by authorities in October last year
under a bridge across the road from where motorists were being targeted
people living near the park say drugs are being sold there
Residents have now taken it upon themselves to rid the park of homeless people
Some of the homeless living in the park have also moved on to Warwick triangle
Residents of the area have taken it upon themselves to get rid of the homeless
one of the homeless people who have been evicted from the park
He is asking that the municipality provide another place where they can stay
“I think the municipality must give us an alternative place because we are all human beings and we have rights
And people must stop painting us with one brush that we are all criminals of which we are not
But others are involved in criminal activities
We are doing different things to support ourselves
I am a self-employed person,” he says
A mother of four who also lives in the park
says they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect
and I feel like even animals have better rights than us
The enforcement agencies provoke us and prompt us to be more violent and behave like animals
They don’t treat us like human beings
and I am a parent as well as I have four children
and we are old enough and sober-minded.”
Community leader Siya Njokweni says they will follow the homeless wherever they go and get them to move on
“The first is to remove them and dislocate them in their own drug den
and we are going to go to each and every place they are going
We are going to Khuzimpi Shezi road as the community to remove them because we don’t want them in any spot and in any area within our community
and we are going to take upon ourselves to do that.”
“We started in November last year and we started by putting up the fence
and may be somewhere next week we are going to complete the fence and make sure that this park is back to the people
And these people will never come back here and we are not only dealing with them in the park but we are going to remove them everywhere so that the city is safe for the residents.”
Mngonyama says they are going to ask the police’s crime intelligence unit to intervene as these homeless people are allegedly used as drug traffickers
“As part of trying to intercept the drug dealings around the city and even here at Albert Park
we are going to make sure that on our operations we involve SAPS crime intelligence to make sure that we detect this criminality.”
Mngonyama says a shelter is being built for the homeless at Illovo
Home » Horse Racing » A Quartet to Beat Current Hollywoodbets Durban July Entries
That was confirmed in an article published by the Sporting Post last week.
Here are the noms.
I can’t remember a time over the past 40 years I would have been able to do the same
I did take some factors into consideration when compiling this list
This includes firstly the fact that the Hollywoodbets Durban July is a Handicap of sorts and as such weights play a mayor role in the outcome of the race
I only looked at horses with form over distance
I have a couple of definitions: Short distance (1000 – 1200m)
Then horses improving (3YO).Horses that are settled (4YO and on ).Current form and buildup
When taking the above into consideration I immediately came up with at least two improving horses and two settled horses which
beat home the nominations in those categories amongst the 61 nominations
I also believe the 3YO crop is truly decent given the fact the L’Ormarins Kings Plate and Cape Town Met was won by 3YO’s
Garrix was a gutsy winner of the Gr3 Legal Eagle Stakes on Sunday (Pic – Chase Liebenberg)
I’m a big fan of GARRIX which I make no secret about
I believe this horse could take up the first spot on most days in this Hollywoodbets Durban July
On collateral form at even weights he has beaten all of WILD INTENT
LA PULGA and then at weight turnaround there should be nothing to choose between him and EIGHT ON EIGHTEEN ( currently favourite @ 6/1 )
GARRIX will also climb up the MR ratings in the next two months making him sure to get in
All of these runs over middle distance and distance races
He is also clearly a horse in form and currently on the up
I always look at certain races which can be used as an indicator of future stardom
In years gone past horses like SEE IT AGAIN (1st)
GOLDEN DUCAT(1st) have all proven this race to produce high quality horses to follow
In 2024 the honour roll was GREEN WITH ENVY(1st)
And we all know what ORIENTAL CHARM did about 5 months later
This year the top 5 finishers have been nominated for the July
except the runner which placed 3rd (the same as ORIENTAL CHARM
I also believe his running style will be suited to Hollywoodbets Greyville as he is able to run from the back like in the Politician Stakes where he was drawn very wide or he can run from midfield as in the VARIETY CLUB STAKES from draw 3 – where he also easily beat another July nomination MAGIC VERSE by more than 8L
I also believe he’ll be best over distance and the 2200m will suit him down to the ground
But then some will argue he going to attempt to sweet the Winter Series
He can easily attempt that and then still run in the July
The Winter Series vs the Hollywoodbets Durban July
Given all the reasons above he would have been my first choice for the 2025 renewal of Africa’s Greatest race
This horse has obviously been crying out for distance races
His form over distances races is impressive
One easy victory and then a fantastic very close 3rd in the SA Derby
He is surely also a horse that will love Hollywoodbets Greyville with his running style
He is also a horse that is currently on the improve and at weight turnaround there should be nothing to choose between him and LEGEND OF AUTHUR (currently 8/1)
Given all the reasons above he would have been my 2nd choice for the 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July
Piet Botha’s Montien (Pic – Chase Liebenberg)
Currently he is the highest rated distance horse in the country with an MR of 129
This horse ran within 1L of the winner and runner up in the MET
And those 2 horses are currently the joint favourites for the Hollywoodbets Durban July
MONTIEN is extremely consistent and should also be suited to Hollywoodbets Greyville
I can’t remember when last the highest rated distance horses was not even nominated for the Hollywoodbets Durban July
Given all the reasons above he would have been my 3rd choice
And then for fourth I would consider an older horse who would have a low weight in but must be suited to the distance
And the horse that immediately comes to mind is BILLY BOWLEGS
Billy Bowlegs in his previous silks – he is now based in the Cape (Pic – JC Photos)
And has dropped a lot in the ratings after a long time of the track
The initial comeback runs have all been way too short for this horse but every time he starts to get going in the latter stages
Surely is crying out to go back over distance (let’s say 2200m?) And off a light weight (53kg) in the July he would have a massive shout
Given all the reasons above he would have been my 4th choice for the 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July
I believe this quartet can beat the 61 nominations
I never thought in my lifetime that I will be able to create a list as above
The fact that I could come up with these four horses within ten minutes after the nominations was published proves the point again
I believe we will thus not have the best handicap field for this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July
The punter and the public would like to see the 18 best handicap horses across the finish line almost as one
Racing is slowly dying in South Africa and all kinds of positive sentiments on TV does not change this
The racecourses are empty week in and week out when compared to the glory days
The pools are terrible compared in real terms to the glory days
The stakes are also way below where it should be compared to the glory days and the rest of the world
All the people I personally know who still love the sport and follow it week in and week out are from a previous generation
this crowds just become smaller and smaller over time
The Hollywoodbets Durban July jockey class of 2024 (Pic – Candiese Lenferna)
I believe that the majority of the next generation do not even know when the July will be run
Ask a couple of the young generation next time you get an opportunity
courses and major races off the back of our hands
Not enough is being done to grow racing among the younger generation but to not have the best fields competing against each other in the spectacle that is the Hollywoodbets Durban July is surely not going to help at all
Please remember I write this because I love racing and don’t want to see it die a slow death
Ed – John Mynhardt’s letter was written prior to the past weekend’s racing

The flurry of naval activity on and around Salisbury Island in the Port of Durban last week was ascribed to “respect” and “sensitivity” by the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) Directorate Corporate Communication (DCC)
Last Friday (25 April) saw SAS Adam Kok III (P1573)
the third multi-mission patrol vessel (MMIPV) to be built for the SA Navy (SAN)
officially named during a ceremony at Naval Base (NB) Durban
A day earlier the base hosted a commissioning event for SAS King Shaka Zulu (P1572)
The vessel was named and handed to the SANDF maritime service in October 2023
Her commissioning follows completion of operational testing and evaluation (OTE)
told defenceWeb the “over-riding reason the activities were not held on the same day was out of sensitivity and respect for the Zulu and Griqua kingdoms”
Also cited for the separate events was anticipation that the receiving and naming ceremony for SAS Adam Kok III would be extensive due to a blessing ceremony and media conference
“We could not risk merging the two ceremonies in the event of unforeseen delays by the various dignitaries in attendance
which included the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans [Angie Motshekga]”
he said in response to this publication’s questions
the second of the new build MMIPVs to enter SAN service
Tshabalala said “individual OTEs are complete and only a couple minor things need to be completed for her to operate as part of a convoy or as an escort”
“The fleet is confident that she can operate safely alone in the area of operation (AoO).”
At the helm of King Shaka is 38-year-old Commander Gurshwin Herwels
Knysna born and where his involvement with matters maritime started by way of the SA Sea Cadet Corps with the training ship Knysna
completing Military Training for Officers part 2 before taking on – and completing – the Higher Certificate for Military Studies at the Military Academy
Post combat officer qualifying he found himself aboard SAS Isandlwana (F146)
This posting was followed by astro navigation

Majola’s journey as he tells it began when his grandparents took responsibility for him as a kid and he went to live with them in Bonela
He was sent to Hunt Road Secondary School (from 2010 to 2014)
It happens to be my Glenwood voting station
a short walk from where I live in a cul-de-sac off King Dinuzulu Road (formerly Berea) and I know the school to have had a chequered history dating way back
“There were a lot of troubled kids,” he says about his time there
a spark was ignited that would develop into a passion for acting
“I’d get into characters on my calls.” Some days he’d be an Afrikaans man
And a lot of the people I spoke to got into it
he also developed an interest in food and catering

He decided that maybe he should study hospitality at DUC and started saving with a purpose

“was a flamboyant drama queen of note,” he tells me
The role meant he had to leave his little trailer and move to Joburg
who comes to KwaMashu to build his career in the entertainment industry.” He films two to three days a week
which harks back to Majola’s food trailer days
The time came when ongoing theft gave him little option but to shutter the trailer
came across this house on the internet and contacted the realtor
not much of a plan and an ignorance-is-bliss attitude
He had the rundown house and was wondering what to do next…
“Then this man (Nkululeko) Dada Maseko saw me online
I didn’t know him but he got his team to reach out
They arrived and said they were there to donate renovations
When I Google it, I find an article on Joburg-based Nkululeko “Dada” Maseko, a hospitality entrepreneur and owner of contemporary fusion dining destination, Brown Sugar Oceans in Umhlanga Oceans Mall
The article tells me Maseko had decided to celebrate the first anniversary of his restaurant
by helping “enhance and renovate the establishment of actor and young entrepreneur
“Within three months we were ready to open.”
Majola launched with what he called The Kitchen Club in July 2024
He shows me pics on his phone of a formal and beautifully laid table snaking through what is now the café interior with its velvet sofa
chairs and benches; items of furniture donated or picked up at thrift stores
The book collection was gifted to Majola for Hue by well-known Durban cultural creative
Initially he wanted a breakfast and brunch café
But customer demand called for extended hours and menu options
“I wanted a place where creatives could gather and engage
There are many spaces around the city where people come — and leave
the idea behind Hue is for people to stay and engage
I don’t know if that was my initial intention
And he likes how it has evolved and is continuing to evolve
Hue Café is both hidden away and in one of Durban’s most happening locations
It is less than a 10-minute walk from Durban’s coolest food and cultural hub at the bottom of Florida Road that is home to Glenwood Bakery Morningside
Cut across from Florida into Lilian Ngoyi Road and you have Bean Bag Jazz Lounge (creating new legends where the legendary Bean Bag Bohemia used to be)
Le Pizzeria 24 (open 24/7) and upscale and hugely popular Zai restaurant (authentic Argentinian grill-house)
The hot and happening trio operate in tandem
and hum — always lines of cars — literally morning
I wouldn’t have known that Hue Café was in a hidden-away spot down a side alley between Bean Bag and Zai had I not asked an urbane and helpful “bouncer” outside Bean Bag on my third circling of the block
wondering where this new venue for a friend’s monthly non-dancers “dance club” could be
His mom previously worked in security in Inanda
His gran and grandpa — “Gogo and Mkhulu” — do the Hue Café upkeep and maintenance
Humility comes to mind in conversation with Majola
They think they don’t belong,” he tells me at one point
“When it comes to putting together the menu
so the menu is small but there’s a feeling of being at home,” he says
The goat stew recipe is an adaptation of one he got from his author-sangoma friend
He is harvesting and sharing creative talent

Premiership
Thabo Matlaba made his first start for Arrows with Kagiso Malinga back up top
while Stellies restored Genino Palace and Thato Khiba from the win over Chippa United
Abafana Besthene made a positive start and saw a forward-run by Siyanda Mthanti from deep lead to an opening
The Maroons contained the pressure and found the opener in the 15th minute against the run of play as Devon Titus capitalised on a defensive lapse from a corner-kick
Malinga almost got the host level in no less than a minute through a smart header following a delivery to the area
but his effort sailed wide of Oscarine Masuluke’s goal
The Maroons still enjoyed momentum amidst the pressure as Andre De Jong nodded inches wide of the area from a cross by Fawaaz Basadien
Arrows boss Manqoba Mngqithi made a double substitution at halftime – bringing on Angelo Van Rooi for Sabelo Sithole and Thokozani Lukhele for Malinga as they looked to get back on level terms
Titus looked to haunt the host once more through a succession of chances minutes from the break
but he was courted by goalkeeper Edward Maova

Royal AM owner Shauwn Mkhize has revealed the salary structures for her embattled team
which South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) expelled from the Betway Premiership due to an outstanding court case
The Sunday World newspaper of South Africa has reported that Mkhize revealed the salaries after going to court to challenge the PSL’s decision to expel her team from the top-flight league
The businesswoman has applied for an urgent court order in the Johannesburg High Court to declare Royal AM’s expulsion as unlawful
The PSL threw out the Durban-based team from the league because it was failing to fulfill fixtures
due to its legal battles with the South African Revenue Service (SARS)
The revenue authority claims Mkhize owes it; hence
Mkhize has challenged assertions that she is financially handicapped
saying she has still been able to pay players' salaries with the highest earning R121,000 and the lowest R2,000 per month
attached a proof of payment for the players' salaries into their bank accounts
Defender Thabo Matlaba was named the club’s highest-paid player
He is followed by midfielder Kabelo Mahlasela’s net pay of R93
The court records show that Mguni is the least paid at R2,000
Mkhize has reportedly since asked that the case be heard this week while trying to reinstate Royal AM in the Betway Premiership
“I was very pleased with the performance and the result,” Barker said
“We are trying to push to finish as high up the table as we can so this was a big game for us and an important one to win away from home
“We controlled the majority of the game
and I thought there were moments that we played very well
when we scored a set-piece goal and then followed it up shortly afterward with another set-piece goal
it’s important that you also look to keep your clean sheet and we pride ourselves on that
so it was good not to concede as well.”
“It will go down to the last game of the season
They are also playing well and picking up results
Both teams are applying pressure on each other
so I do think it will go all the way down to the wire

“Thabo has been superb throughout the season
He got his due recognition by making the last Bafana Bafana squad
and I would be very surprised if he’s not in line to win the Defender of the Season award
“He’s been consistent for us throughout the year
and another very good performance from him against Arrows.”
“Whenever you play Sundowns it will be tough
I think they’ve only lost two games this season
we have to be at our best and that tactically and technically we will have to execute our game plan really well
they have individual brilliance all around the park
“We’ve shown ourselves to be competitive against Sundowns though
so we also have to believe that we can go there and get a result and show them that we want to become a team that is challenging for league titles and being consistently good on the continent
“It’s these types of teams like Sundowns that are a good benchmark for us to see where we are.”

Previn Vedan says he witnessed firsthand the persistent struggles for equitable housing and land rights in South Africa
I was a victim of a violent attack that left me disabled
and adjustments to my new adaptive lifestyle
necessitated a period of healing and reflection
I reflected deeply on the systemic issues facing South Africa
and I rediscovered the purpose that once ignited my passion for justice
I immersed myself in the very communities that first inspired my commitment to human rights
I witnessed first-hand the persistent struggles for equitable housing and land rights in South Africa
These experiences reaffirmed my belief that the fight for dignity and justice is far from over
I never left the struggle - I simply needed time to find the right words
‘Unhousing the Rainbow’ is not just about land or laws
This is my long-form piece (divided in 10 parts) on housing and hope in South Africa
Previn Vedan says the fight for dignity and justice is far from over
Part 1: Finding the Words Again: Reflection
From Land Act to Group Areas: A Legacy Written in Brick and Blood
South Africa’s housing crisis cannot be divorced from its history
the colonial regime passed the Natives Land Act
confining the Black majority to just 7% of the country’s land - later expanded to 13% by 1936
This legislation marked the beginning of systematic dispossession
Black families were uprooted from ancestral lands and herded into “native reserves” and later
The apartheid government doubled down with the Group Areas Act of 1950
which enforced strict residential segregation
Over the next few decades an estimated 3.5 million Black South Africans were forcibly removed from so-called 'white' areas in one of history’s largest mass removals - a figure that does not include the thousands of Indian and Coloured South Africans that were also uprooted from places like Cato Manor and District Six under the same brutal laws
Entire thriving neighbourhoods - like Magazine Barracks in Durban - were demolished
their people scattered and their histories erased in the name of racial planning
But these policies were not only about physical separation
They engineered apartheid’s spatial economy
Indian and Coloured communities were deliberately placed far from city centers and stripped of access to quality schools
they endured disparate levels of service provision and opportunity
In these neglected townships - roads went unpaved
The scars of this spatial injustice remain deeply etched
Sober brick houses with neat yards may stand in one area - while just across an invisible line - crowded informal settlements sprawl without sewage
The Group Areas Act did not just segregate communities
Part two of ‘Unhousing the Rainbow’ will be published next Friday
