Red Bull suggested that “discernibly reduced speed” should be interpreted as passing the yellow-flag zone at an absolute speed lower than the speed before entering the yellow-flag zone Mercedes argued that the common practice accepted by all teams and the FIA was that significantly lifting the throttle in a yellow-flag zone is considered an appropriate reaction The team also suggested Russell had lifted more than Verstappen had observed from onboard footage and the telemetry from Russell's car it was evident that he "lifted the throttle when passing the yellow-flag zone and this resulted in a reduction of torque of approx a statement added the relevant article in the sporting regulations "requires the driver to have 'discernibly reduced speed' in a yellow-flag zone but does not specify if that means reducing the absolute speed or reducing the speed relative to the regular racing speed in the relevant part of the track "The speed of car 63 [Russell] in the yellow-flag zone was considerably slower than the regular racing speed but the absolute speed while passing through the yellow-flag zone increased slightly "The stewards determine that the requirement of Article 26.1 a) concerning the reduction of speed in a yellow-flag zone can only relate to a reduction relative to the regular racing speed as the reduction of the absolute speed can depending on the part of the track in which the yellow flag is displayed represent a compliance or a non-compliance with the regulations whereas a reduction of the relative speed always signals that the driver has acknowledged and respected the yellow flag the absolute speed can be reduced without necessarily complying with the regulations." with Red Bull's €2,000 deposit for launching the protest forfeited Join RacingNews365's Sam Coop and Nick Golding as they look back on the biggest talking points from the Miami Grand Prix Oscar Piastri taking charge and Max Verstappen needing to change his McLaren approach are major discussions Rather watch the podcast? Wednesday's briefing follows Simelane's undertaking several weeks ago that she would take the nation into her confidence once the report was finalised. "The investigation into this process revealed significant irregularities in the registration process. The company in question inaccurately presented its capabilities during the registration phase. Among other things, it failed to declare its intention to construct a multi-storey building. This omission by its very nature breached the NHBRC's policies." Simelane says a contractor was allowed to proceed with the multi-storey building construction without the proper enrolment process for such a structure. "Even more disturbing was the unlawful use of other officials' credentials to enrol the first phase of the project. This actually demonstrated the breakdown in NHBRC internal processes." Simelane says there were gaps in the competency of key personnel. "This included unqualified personnel who lacked formal qualifications in engineering or quantity surveying, and they were playing critical roles in areas such as inspection. And if you are not qualified, you really won't even know what to expect, and that's one of the reasons which led to the problems that subsequently befell the George building." Simelane says the investigation revealed that the George Municipality approved the plans when construction had already begun. "This means the work on site started before approvals were finalised. In summary, the investigation concluded that the collapse of a building was as a result of systemic failures across multiple levels of oversight." About four million Romanians live and work abroad seeking better economic and educational opportunities outside the Eastern European country of 19 million people Spain and Germany are home to the biggest numbers of Romanian expats with more than 70 percent of votes cast going to the hard-right leader often low-paid work and have found a political home in the policies and rhetoric of Simion a staunchly anti-establishment rabble-rouser who has blamed many of the country’s woes on its stagnant political class so the ones who left the country because of what they consider to be very low socioeconomic conditions for them,” said Oana-Valentina Suciu an assistant professor of political science at the University of Bucharest Although Romania’s economy has rallied significantly in the decades since it emerged from Nicolae Ceaușescu’s communist dictatorship, the country is still dogged by corruption and lower living standards than wealthier western and northern Europe “Simion was the only one who literally visited poor areas in Romania and Romanian communities in the diaspora so he was the one who apparently paid attention to them — even if actually the solutions that he proposes are completely unrealistic,” Suciu said Simion — who supports U.S. President Donald Trump’s MAGA agenda — wants to unify Romania and Moldova has called to terminate allied military aid to Ukraine and pledged he will break EU law if he disagrees with diktats from Brussels “What he proposes to them seems like a very easy solution for their problems,” Suciu said supporting Simion was less about his actual policies and more to do with opposing the establishment “They [Romanian expats] always go against the system irrespective of who the candidates are,” she said “Usually they go for what they consider to be an outsider.” When Simion faces off against opponent Nicușor Dan in two weeks’ time it will be the first time a candidate from one of the mainstream parties — the social democrats or national liberals — did not make it to the runoff “The vote is a clear rejection of the ruling coalition Both Simion and Dan are seen as ‘anti-system,’ even though they are diametrically opposed politically,” said Oana Lungescu former chief spokesperson for NATO and fellow at defense and security think tank the Royal United Services Institute “Romanians will face a stark choice on May 18 between an ultranationalist and a pro-Western candidate.” Romania’s election last November was annulled after the authorities uncovered a Russia-style influence operation on social media in favor of ultranationalist Călin Georgescu And it appears social media could ultimately play an outsized role in this election too. Simion has used social media to great effect to reach Romanians abroad, with 1.4 million followers on TikTok. As of Monday, his videos have been liked 30 million times. “He [Simion] is highly active on the social platforms especially the ones such as Instagram and TikTok that do not need too much attention you just scroll and see images and messages,” Suciu said a Romanian expat living in Belgium who preferred not to use his surname said Simion’s victory “would’ve been impossible without TikTok.” “He is a TikTok product and launched his whole movement on the back of Covid disinformation Simion’s AUR party fanned conspiracies during the Covid-19 pandemic opposing government measures to limit the spread of the virus and spreading falsehoods about vaccines to ride a wave of anti-science sentiment he kind of exploded during the pandemic … he does lives on TikTok all the time so he kind of gives off this really kind of genuine persona that he built,” Vlad said Most Romanians living in the diaspora were not well-educated and susceptible to Simion’s populist rhetoric and social media outreach it’s actually people who don’t have such a high level of education menial jobs … we’re talking about truck drivers people who look after the elderly,” he said “They were always kind of living in their bubbles in their communities sending all their money they were making back home and … living fairly lonely lives,” he added Simion bypassed traditional media to speak directly to those disenchanted diaspora voters promising to hear their concerns — and they returned the favor on Sunday and potentially all the way to the presidency The hard right cruised to victory in Sunday’s presidential election first round sparking the stunning announcement from socialist PM Marcel Ciolacu The nationalist chief vociferously supports Donald Trump and Giorgia Meloni — and he leads the presidential beautiful by piecing them together to form sculptures His latest - and biggest - piece to date is a magnificent metal elephant he painstakingly created out of 39 000 nuts This lovely piece of art is sure to become a new landmark in the George CBD having found its resting place at Dynarc House on the corner of Courtenay and Meade Street Commissioned by Dynarc CEO Willie van Heerden the elephant is a lovely depiction of the company’s elephant logo Van Heerden says he chose this logo many years ago because it embodies the power of Africa for him A crane truck was used to transport the sculpture from Pretorius’ studio at the back of his home in George South to Dynarc It took him four months of almost non-stop work to complete it but he said he was ecstatic to see it finally standing in the place it was made for He then sprayed expanding foam all over it Then followed a layer of plasticene and clay which allowed him to add life-like detail to the sculpture Plaster of Paris came last to form the mould which was the base to which the nuts were pieced together.  The sculpture was not moulded in one piece but various pieces of it were done separately and eventually welded together the sculpture was lasered and burnt with the help of two friends which will allow it to expand and contract with heat “Nuts give me the space to combine all the sculpting experience I have accumulated giving me a lifelike 3D honeycomb dimensional look I also want the viewer to use their own imagination in what they see,” said Pretorius Standing in a prominent location in one of George’s main make it to run-off against nationalist George Simion Romania’s pro-EU prime minister, Marcel Ciolacu, has resigned after his ruling coalition’s candidate crashed out of a presidential election rerun decisively won by a far-right Trump admirer dramatically deepening the country’s political turmoil “Rather than let the future president replace me told reporters after a meeting at the headquarters of his Social Democratic party (PSD) Ciolacu said the PSD would withdraw from the pro-western coalition – effectively ending it – while cabinet ministers will stay on in an interim capacity until a new majority can be negotiated after the presidential run-off on 18 May Sunday’s first-round vote was convincingly won by ultranationalist George Simion, 38, who sports Maga caps, pushes a socially conservative agenda and has called for the “Melonisation” – referring to Italy’s far-right prime minister – of Europe Simion’s score of 40.96% was almost double that of the second-placed finisher The two will face each other in a runoff that raises the prospect of another disruptive nationalist joining the EU leaders’ club The coalition candidate, Crin Antonescu, finished third in a bitter blow to the government, formed after December elections by the leftist PSD, the centrist Liberals and ethnic Hungarian UDMR to keep the EU and Nato member on a pro-western track Simion’s Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and two other sovereignist parties won more than a third of parliamentary seats and forming a new majority without the far-right bloc will be hard – even more so if Simion is elected president A Simion victory – and a likely change of government – could lead to Romania, which shares a border with Ukraine veering away from the mainstream and becoming another disruptive force within the EU alongside Hungary and Slovakia It would also be welcomed by conservative nationalists in Europe and beyond – including senior Trump administration figures such as the US vice-president JD Vance – who accused Bucharest of denying democracy after the original ballot was cancelled “The problem now isn’t that Romania is in a hard place should George Simion win,” said the political scientist Cristian Pîrvulescu “The anti-European group within the EU will become more substantial.” George Simion socially conservative agenda and has called for the ‘Melonisation’ of Europe was behind the cancellation of the original vote last year Simion said after the result that his win was “not just an electoral victory It is the victory of those who have not lost hope The far-right candidate added: “I am here to serve Romanians He said he believed in an EU “that thrives as a nest for its diverse and sovereign nations – not as a rigid system enforcing one-size-fits-all policies” George Simion in the run-off vote Photograph: Mihai Barbu/AFP/Getty ImagesExperts have said Dan may struggle to beat Simion in the runoff because of disagreements between the independent candidate and the mainstream PSD and Liberal parties that could easily deter their voters from switching allegiance Romania’s president has a semi-executive role with considerable powers over foreign policy defence spending and judicial appointments They also represent the country on the international stage and can veto important EU votes Simion promised on Sunday to make Georgescu prime minister early elections for allegedly failing to slow under yellow flags during the Miami Grand Prix Russell had beaten Max Verstappen to the final position on the podium behind the McLaren team-mates pipping the reigning World Champion by two seconds was in jeopardy when Red Bull alleged that he had not slowed sufficiently when Oliver Bearman’s Haas ground to a halt triggering the second of three Virtual Safety Car periods in Miami Russell was able to claim a cheap pit stop in the process as the Mercedes driver dived into the pits for medium tyres and returned to the track ahead of Verstappen in P3 Verstappen was quick to come over the radio and query whether Russell had sufficiently slowed under the double waved yellows Russell held on to that final podium spot to the chequered flag Article 2.5.5 b) of the International Sporting Code This particular section reads: “Double Waved Yellow Flag: Any driver passing through a double waved yellow flag marshalling sector must reduce speed significantly and be prepared to change direction or stop.” 👉 The results of the F1 2025 championship 👉 The updated Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship standings The FIA heard evidence from Red Bull and Mercedes the former claiming that while Russell lifted the throttle when the yellow flag was displayed Red Bull argued that ‘discernibly reduced speed’ meant ‘passing the yellow flag zone at an absolute speed which is lower than the speed before entering the yellow flag zone’ as Verstappen countered that it was ‘common practice accepted by all teams and the FIA’ that ‘significantly lifting the throttle’ through a yellow flag zone is considered an ‘appropriate reaction’ Russell had therefore complied with the relevant regulations he said that he saw the single yellow and had ‘significantly lifted the throttle to react to the yellow flag’ Mercedes also stated that the Briton’s lift was ‘more significant’ than what could be observed by other cars ruling that the ‘protest is rejected as it is not founded’ Their statement read: “It was evident from the onboard footage as well as from telemetry that Car 63 lifted the throttle when passing the yellow flag zone 25 percent and this resulted in a reduction of torque of approx a) requires the driver to have “discernibly reduced speed” in a yellow flag zone but does not specify if that means reducing the absolute speed or reducing the speed relative to the regular racing speed in the relevant part of the track ‘The speed of Car 63 in the yellow flag zone was considerably slower than the regular racing speed but the absolute speed while passing through the yellow flag zone increased slightly ‘The Stewards determine that the requirement of Article 26.1 a) concerning the reduction of speed in a yellow flag zone can only relate to a reduction relative to the regular racing speed as the reduction of the absolute speed can in a braking zone the absolute speed can be reduced without necessarily complying with the regulations.’ Read so far and can look at Levi Colwill Trevoh Chalobah and Reece James showing the way to first-team success George's strike against Fulham on 20 April saw him become Chelsea's youngest goalscorer in the thought I could help him," Sobers told BBC Sport "We would spend hours doing one-versus-one and I enjoyed the fact that he would push himself so much I'd be a 'bad' referee when he played against 18 year olds so he would get kicked - but have to get up and win the ball back "We did tactics on his Friday session during these matches especially when coming back to their own age group." George also trained for several years with Unique FA but under the proviso that he would play with players a few years older than himself Sobers still works with George and added: "Ty became unfazed by anything but it was on him how relentless he was at repetition and doing the fundamentals "He was non-stop and we pushed him but he always wanted to work hard and we didn't force him it was all him wanting to be exceptional while staying humble "He already showed he had the mentality by facing men even when small for his age group A late growth spurt was the missing piece of the puzzle." She said the princess had asked for the book during their conversation at the Palace tea party. Ms Wood said: “I have written a book about my time as an evacuee and it was published. She asked for a copy. “My mother also wrote about it and it was her reaction to sending her children away.” Ms Wood said of Kate: “She is just an ordinary lady, just a mum.” As she chatted with veterans, Kate joked of her son: “He’s going to have to practise his shooting like you.” Norman Brown, 101, said he performed a magic trick to the Queen while talking to her. The trick involved tying string on Camilla’s finger before whipping it off. Mr Brown said: “I was dared to show the magic trick to the Queen, so I did it. “She loved it, so I’m glad, I’m chuffed to be here, very proud.” Joy Trew, who signed up to join the war effort aged 17 and served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, said Charles tucked her blanket into her wheelchair during Monday’s military parade in London to prevent her from getting chilly. “He bent down and tucked me in,” she said. Of the procession, Ms Trew, who grew up in Bristol but now lives in Wells in Somerset, said: “I said to him (the King) a lot of the women look formidable and he said ‘yes’.” The 98-year-old said she discussed parenting with Charles and told him she had tried to be a strict mother to her children. Robert Piper, 99, from Southwater in West Sussex, said of the King: “He is a very interesting person and he seems very understanding. “We spoke for a while about my service and the memories I have of the war.” Mr Piper said he has “lots of memories” of the war, which come back to him at night. He added: “The men I served with gave it their all for this country, it’s right they’re still remembered and I hope the young generations keep remembering them. “Today has been superb but very overwhelming.” Henry Ducker, 104, from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, said Camilla spoke with him about her father. He said: “It was an honour to talk with her, she was quite funny, very humorous. “We had quite a laugh, she is a lovely woman.” Camilla’s father, Major Bruce Shand, served with the 12th Lancers during the Second World War and was awarded the Military Cross in 1940 during the retreat to Dunkirk, and again in 1942 for his efforts in North Africa. Veterans enjoyed sandwiches, scotch eggs and scones at the tea party. Also on the menu were potted shrimps with brown bread and butter, egg and bacon quiche, vegetable pasties and sausage rolls, along with lemon and carrot cake, chocolate cake, treacle tarts and strawberries and cream. They dined on large tables in the Marble Hall which was decorated in bunting made from fabrics recycled from the royal estate. The veterans had a prime spot on the Buckingham Palace garden steps as a flypast went over. Many looked up and smiled and applauded, while Army veteran Joe Mines, 100, waved as the planes went over. Among them was Ruth Barnwell, 100, who joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service aged 17 when her brother’s friend was killed on HMS Hood, which was sunk by the German battleship Bismarck during the Battle of the Denmark Strait on May 24 1941. Regarding the commemoration, she told PA: “It was great. Really great. Today has been wonderful.” Politicians including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, London mayor Sadiq Khan, Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch were also there. They were joined by actor Timothy Spall and were serenaded by a brass band as they waited for the aircraft. RBL director general Mark Atkinson said the charity was “proud” to take a place “at the heart of these national celebrations and commemorations as this really will be one of our last opportunities as a nation to pay tribute to those veterans still with us today”. British and Commonwealth armed forces veterans from the Royal Navy, the British Army and the Royal Air Force, plus Wrens, SOE members, D-Day veterans and Desert Rats were among those attending the tea party.
