GIYANI – Mcdonald Nsovo Khoza (24) from Nkowankowa Section A has been remanded in custody following his appearance in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 02 May 2025, on charges of stock theft. His arrest is linked to an incident that occurred on the night of Wednesday, 30 April 2025, in Mphagani Village. According to police reports, a 77-year-old farmer secured his seven goats in a kraal before going to bed. The following morning, he discovered five goats missing and immediately alerted local authorities. A swift police response led to the spotting of a grey NP 200 bakkie suspected of transporting the stolen goats. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, prompting a high-speed chase. The bakkie was eventually stopped, and while three suspects fled on foot, the 24-year-old driver was arrested at the scene. Police say Khoza failed to provide a credible explanation for the goats in his possession. The livestock, valued at approximately R7,900, was recovered and returned to the rightful owner. Khoza remains in police custody. His case has been postponed to 13 May 2025 for a formal bail hearing and further investigation. Police efforts to track down the remaining suspects are ongoing. The Greater Giyani Local Municipality says the completion of the R25 million Mavalani Indoor Sports Centre, which is the first of its kind in the municipality, underscores the municipality’s commitment to using sports to develop and enhance the lives of children and young people in deep rural areas. The soon to be handed over facility, which started in November 2022, will provide a rare opportunity to children in Mavalani and surrounding villages, to learn and develop skills in different sporting codes such as tennis, volleyball, netball and basketball. The long-awaited completion of the project comes after the completion and handing over of the controversial R6 million Homu Sports Centre in May 2024, which is one of the municipality’s longest stalled projects. The municipality has previously faced backlash from communities over the delays in completing sporting facilities, which also include the Mageva Sports Centre, wherein an extra R1 million was set aside to extend the pitch following complaints by the community. Municipal spokesperson Steven Mabunda says the municipality is on track to completing other sporting facilities in deep rural communities, including the Section E sports centre. “Giyani’s Demo Plant is progressing to the production ramp-up commissioning phase and the team continues to work determinedly towards first production of battery-grade manganese We are targeting first production of HPMSM in Q1 2025 Our technical and operational teams are demonstrating excellent skill and resilience in navigating the usual late-stage commissioning challenges that occur when plants ramp-up toward production All the learnings and identified adjustments we are making from the process underway further endorse the strategic decision to construct a Demo Plant at a 1:10 scale to the planned Commercial Facility This significantly de-risks the final Project and provides Giyani with a unique platform to understand how its planned Commercial Facility will behave The Demo Plant also provides Giyani the ability to conduct R&D on its process and ensure it maintains its early mover advantage The Demo Plant is an essential component in Giyani’s long-term strategy to deliver high-purity battery-grade manganese to the EV market This production capacity establishes a strong foundation for Giyani to engage with potential offtake partners as the continuous process flow of the Demo Plant will allow the team to target steady-state operations over extended periods consequently proving Giyani’s ability to produce consistent battery-grade manganese and satisfy offtake requirements This continuous operation at pre-commercial scale also provides critical information for understanding how the Commercial Plant will respond Figure 1: Left to right - Process Engineer There are also concerns over the delayed completion of projects, particularity the appointment of consultants for the refurbishment of the long-awaited Mageva Sports Centre, wherein the municipality set aside an extra R1 million to extend the pitch following complaints by the community. and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina They will also visit the Nandoni Dam Pump Station and a reticulation project at Nwakhuwani The Rixaka Heritage Forum in Limpopo says the move to construct a Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) campus in Giyani is long overdue and it did not hijack the idea from the Bapedi royal family Last week Sunday World reported that the Bapedi Royal Kingdom pointed a finger at TUT principal and vice-chancellor Professor Tinyiko Maluleke accusing him of hijacking the idea to build a campus in their area This week Rixaka Heritage Foundation spokesperson Joshua Maluleke said by 2010 the Khatsani Education Foundation had made representations to government to revisit the idea of opening a university campus in Giyani to replace both the defunct University of Gazankulu and the dysfunctional section of the University of Venda the foundation and the Royal Leaders Union joined hands to further lobby the government the National Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) under then minister Blade Nzimande agreed to carry the project forward He said he was aware that the Bapedi Royal Kingdom in Sekhukhune was also waiting for the construction of a TUT campus in their region “[Prof Tinyiko] Maluleke had no association with the university whatsoever at the time By the time Prof Maluleke joined TUT as vice chancellor in 2022 the decision to establish a university campus in Giyani was ready for announcement minister Ndzimande went to Giyani to publicly announce the decision of his ministry to establish a campus in Giyani.” Mampuru warned that if the matter was not handled properly it had the potential to cause a serous rift between the two Limpopo communities Visit SW YouTube Channel for our video content Chest pains because the campus might unlock other more developments South africa doesn’t deserve a proxy of Mr Mampuru’s calibre.Giyani will develop further and the same to Sekhukhune will happen regardless of this hired developments assassin that is Mr Mampuru Giyani Campus was long over due prior to JZ launching a new University of Mpumalanga Mampuru must understand that public sector infrastructure development will never be part of his comradeship on development why it turns sour when development is made in Giyani for all the people living in South Africa and abroad people who suffer from the old n new tribalism must learn to wean from it because it is a venom to our human kind development and progress we deserve in our life span now and forever We are not afraid of bapedi as vatsonga if they want to start a fight they can fight and we will fight too Mapedi they are so jealous they have TUT in Polokwane if they think us as Tsongas we are stupid and they want to start fight they can and will fight too and show them we are not their slaves even Mandela whom fight for freedom of south Africa he won’t refuse a progress to other people say must mind their own business their Polokwane and leave Giyani with us if they want to involve their self in giyani matters let them come they will respect us one day I thank the Management of the TUT University and the minister of higher education Dr Blade Nzimande for this decision We are seeing most districts fast developing and Giyani remains a slum like with only two streets in town which some seem to enjoy as if we are not part of this country on the basis of tribalism which seem be in the blood of our fellow South Africans whilst we are all black South Africans The university serves the interests of all South Africans not necessarily a particular ethnic group is just located in Giyani as the town also have ho develop as well It is terrible as the idea started long time ago hence that area have many institutions of higher learning in exception of Giyani as UL TUT Campus and others are located within the ambit of that area Let build a united front collectively as we belong to this country and the continent so a those found on the outside of the law will be arrested without fear or favour,” adds Mashaba Residents of Mphagane village outside Giyani in Limpopo have raised concerns over severe drought conditions. They allege that more than 150 head of cattle and sheep have died due to the drought. Residents, Joseph Mashele and Lillian Mlambo, say attempts to get relief from the government have been futile. “We have a major problem of a drought in Mphagane, our government has not assisted us. There is no food for the cattle. We were only assisted a long time ago. Then we were given just four or five bags of fodder, which is not enough,” says Mashele. “We lost all our livestock and we rely on cattle to feed our families. I am heartbroken because I am now unable to fend for my family,” says Mlambo. The Greater Giyani Local Municipality has embarked on a project to address the long-standing challenge of a water stream in Section F, which has caused serious damage to road infrastructure, impacting other areas including Section E and Giyani CBD. The R4.5 million project involves redirecting the stream so that water does not flow into the streets, however, this process is set to delay the ongoing road rehabilitation programme in Giyani and surrounding areas. Municipal spokesperson Steven Mabunda has urged community members to be patient, as the project, which has since started, is expected be completed in two months. Mabunda further highlighted that the municipality has experienced serious water losses due to the dilapidated drainage systems, but says plans are currently in place to allocate a budget for the upgrading of the systems. The Greater Giyani Local Municipality says the new landfill site outside Giyani will be one of the biggest waste disposal sites in the Mopani District and will greatly assist in generating more revenue for the municipality once it’s operational. The construction of the site began around 2013 and was completed about three years ago, but the process to operationalize it was halted following a visit by Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation last year, which noted issues of non-compliance to sanitation standards. The committee then gave the municipality a snag list of issues that must be corrected before the site can be operationalized and on Thursday, mayor Thandi Zitha introduced a contractor responsible for fixing the issues and the work, costing R8.7 million, is expected to be completed in 3 months. Municipal spokesperson Steven Mavunda says the site will boost the municipality’s revenue streams, wherein neighbouring municipalities as well as private businesses will be able to utilize it, at a cost. The news of the deaths of more South African National Defence Force soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo has caused further anguish to the families of the soldiers. Four more SANDF soldiers have died in the DRC, bringing to 13 the number of South African soldiers who have died in fierce fighting with M23 rebels. The family of 27-year-old Derrick Maluleke, from Hlaneki village in the Giyani area says they are battling to accept the news of his death and are left with unanswered questions. His brother, Samson Malukeke says a few days before his passing, they were chatting via WhatsApp, and he promised he would return home safely. Maluleke says while they have questions surrounding his death, they are more focused on having his remains repatriated back home so they can bid him a proper farewell. Rise Mzansi is urging Deputy President Paul Mashatile to announce a completion date for the Giyani Water Project during his oversight visit today. Mashatile, together with the minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina, is visiting Nandoni dam in Thohoyandou, and will proceed to other project sites, including Middle Letaba Canal at Xikukwana, Giyani Water Treatment Works, and a reticulation project at Nwakhuwani. Rise Mzansi National Assembly Caucus Whip, Makashule Gana has emphasized that the Giyani Water Project’s challenges reflect broader water and sanitation issues, citing the government’s assessment that 64% of South Africa’s wastewater treatment works are at ‘high or critical risk’. Gana further highlights that South Africa is in the midst of a water crisis, which not only hinders economic growth but also poses health risks to many. He says the water woes in Giyani and beyond are forcing residents to share drinking water with livestock, a situation that perpetuates indignity. Greater Giyani Local Municipality’s acting Mayor, Thamsanqa Mabunda has commended all the female farmers who are fighting against all odds and using agriculture as a tool to address the high unemployment rate in the area. The municipality hosted the 2nd annual Female Farmer of the Year Awards on Wednesday in Giyani, where the overall winner, the Feda Agricultural Primary Co-operative, which comprises 6 women from Ka-Dzumeri village, took home a R140 000 cash price. The co-operative which focuses on poultry and vegetable farming was started in 2011 and employs 13 other female farmers, with its vegetables currently being delivered as far as the Vhembe district, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
