the Forest Grove softball team clawed out a narrow 2-1 home victory over Glencoe and heated up the Pacific Conference race even more on Friday night
This valuable win came for the Vikings (14-5
5-1 Pacific) by pushing through any mistakes they made early
second baseman Alise Morency came up with the game-winning RBI with two outs in the bottom of the fifth
“That was a clutch play with two outs,” Forest Grove coach Jeremy Ingram said
And that clutch hit topped off a strong team performance with seven total hits as a team with Paola Reyes Figuera getting an RBI single in the bottom of second
Starting pitcher Kherington Wright also ousted any hopes for Glencoe (14-6
4-2) in the top of the seventh with two of her four strikeouts coming in the top of seventh
“A total team effort for us today,” Ingram said
We stayed in the game and got a little bit of something from a lot of girls today.”
That brewing confidence came through in the third inning with Ingram intentionally walking Crimson Tide senior Irene VanDyke to load up the bases with only one out and the Vikings were leading 1-0
“(VanDyke) is one of the best players in our league,” Ingram said.“We had an open base
We felt more confident with the two girls behind her than we did throwing to her.”
But we went with our guts and it paid off.”
the Vikings got consecutive outs to pay off Ingram’s gamble and let his players know the trust he has in them
and he knows we have a solid defense,” Forest Grove shortstop Kailea Takahashi said
and it definitely is nerve wracking to load our bases
Takahashi also started some strong routine plays by nabbing some runners at first
including a double play in the bottom of the third by being the main proponent of a double play at second and first base
she was happy to see her teammates stepping up with Wright to highlight
especially for how young she is,” Takahashi said about Wright
And knowing that she can out-pitch all these batters is amazing.”
Our team has a hard time keeping our energy up at the beginning of games
This is a close game to a really good team
Glencoe always looked like it could take the lead in any inning with coach Wade Sahlfeld giving props to the Vikings
“It is always going to come down to one or two runs with them,” Sahlfeld said
and I really commend Jeremy Ingram about that
you know they’re gonna come to play so I got to do a better job as a coach to get my players ready for that.”
Makena Petrick got Glencoe’s lone run thanks to an error in the infield after catcher Kenley Wright overthrew third base
All game it felt like momentum could shift in the Crimson Tide’s favor with Tuesday Mevis calmly catching back-to-back line drives out to center field before Morency’s RBI
“I thought we had some good momentum here and there,” Sahlfeld said
Every time you thought the momentum would change
What it comes down to is they made plays and we didn’t."

The 13th February is the anniversary of the massacre of Glencoe which took place on Friday 13th February 1692 and the piobaireachd commemorating it is also a well known tune
Glencoe must be one of the best known stories in Scottish history
Everyone has heard how the Campbells went as guests to Glencoe then turned on their hosts the MacDonalds and murdered them
More than three hundred years later this is still the general opinion although some blame is now put on King William and the Master of Stair who planned the massacre
and it is realised that the perpetrators were not Campbell clansmen but soldiers of Argyll’s regiment of the British army
A closer look at the facts leads to several questions
with only 38 killed out of a population of over 400
If William’s purpose was to destroy this small clan why did he not march in a regiment of English or Dutch soldiers
He had plenty of experience in warfare and would know how these things were done
Why have a small group of soldiers lodge in the glen for two weeks prior to the massacre
Casualties among the soldiers were negligible
Why did William order a massacre that did him no good politically and gave his opponents a useful propaganda weapon against him
The choice of Argyll’s regiment was deliberate
As Scots they were expendable but they were still British Soldiers
The regiment had been raised by the Earl of Argyll from among his clansmen and was officered by Campbell gentry
Many of the soldiers had the surname Campbell so enmity between the clans could be stressed
He was a cousin of the Earl of Breadalbane but had been bankrupted by the MacDonald raids on his lands and in order to support his family was forced to take up a career in the army at the age of 59. He was uncle to the wife of the MacDonald Chief’s younger son so would be received as one of the family
Clan Donald was Jacobite and Catholic although the Glencoe MacDonalds were Episcopalian
which was at the time considered the nearest thing to Catholic
Put the two groups together in overcrowded living conditions in midwinter and trouble should be guaranteed
The date of the massacre is also significant
It was the third anniversary of the proclamation of William and Mary as King and Queen and this could have provoked the MacDonalds to action
The timing given in the orders is interesting and vital to the true story
Glenlyon received a letter on the evening of the 12th ordering him to kill the MacDonalds
He was told Major Duncanson and a stronger party would be with him at that time or shortly after but he was not to wait
However Major Duncanson and his men were ordered to be at the “several posts assigned them” by 7am
outnumbered four to one by the inhabitants
would have had to fight alone for two hours
was to be one of the first victims so it would be the aim of every MacDonald to get Glenlyon
Add to this the MacDonalds’ reputation as fighters and give them all the advantages of fighting in the dark on their home ground and you have the perfect conditions for a massacre – of the soldiers
Consider what the story might have been if all had gone according to plan
Fort William is overcrowded so two companies of soldiers are sent to lodge in Glencoe
Two weeks later there is trouble and fighting breaks out
The soldiers are massacred by their hosts but many of the MacDonalds are killed also
Major Duncanson arrives two hours later and kills more; the remaining murderers flee from the glen but are trapped by soldiers blocking the exits and killed
Public opinion is outraged at this murder of innocent British soldiers by Highland Barbarians and King William has the excuse and the backing he needs
The following spring and summer would have seen the complete destruction of the Highlands and the end of the Jacobite threat
with sporting activities during the day and ceilidhs and card games in the evenings
When ordered to kill their hosts the soldiers had little enthusiasm for the task and many of the MacDonalds were warned
The Chief’s son John seemed to have some suspicion of what was planned and realising their only chance of survival was to get away
not by the regular routes all of which were blocked by soldiers
but by a perilous way to the safety of Appin
a route thought to be impassable in winter
The MacDonalds could not now be blamed for starting the massacre so another explanation had to be found
The rather lame excuse of Maclain having been late in swearing allegiance was used
but King William also managed to put the blame firmly on the Campbells where it has remained to this day
John Campbell Earl of Breadalbane was arrested and came near to losing his life for his part in the affair
but after some months of imprisonment he was released on the King’s orders
In 1715 a regiment of Breadalbane men fought at Sheriffmuir on the Jacobite side although the Earl
Only illness saved him from being arrested again
Robert Campbell of Glenlyon died in Bruges in 1696
His son John led 500 Breadalbane men at the battle of Sheriffmuir where they fought alongside the MacDonalds. John’s son Archie led the Glenlyon men in the Jacobite army in 1745
Glenlyon’s order from Major Duncanson was not placed with the regimental papers but was kept in the Glenlyon family and later the Breadalbane family
as evidence that he had done no more than obey orders
If events had gone as planned the MacDonalds would have gone down in history as the Clan who massacred their guests

Archaeology excels in giving insights into the everyday lives of people in the past. It is only very occasionally that we get those spine-tingling moments when we can connect the artefacts and structures we excavate to very specific people and events – such as the massacre of Glen Coe
Glen Coe is famous for its dramatic mountains and the brutal slaying that took place in 1692 when government troops killed 38 members of the MacDonald clan
Many more who fled in the wintry blizzard died of exposure in the freezing mountains
In our recent excavations at Achnacon in the glen – 16 miles south of Fort William – we discovered a pin for holding on a plaid (a piece of material used to wrap around the body)
These came from what we believe is the house of MacDonald of Achnacon
the head man of the village who escaped narrowly with his life in 1692
Today, together with Derek Alexander, head of archaeology at the National Trust for Scotland
our team of archaeologists from the University of Glasgow are weaving together new and old evidence to tell stories about those who lived
worked and died in Glen Coe hundreds of years ago
We have uncovered tantalising traces of houses
fields and vegetable gardens which allow us to reimagine life in 17th-18th century Glen Coe
The team excavated garden soil more than 50cm deep that had been cared for across generations
In the narrow corridor between the boggy lands by the river and the bare rock of the mountain
we mapped the cultivation ridges where the people grew oats and barley
often with walls built of turf to keep out the cows
Many of the artefacts show touchingly ordinary
The clay tobacco pipes and broken bottles of green glass are echoes of evenings spent drinking
Spindle whorls beside a fireplace suggest where the women of the house sat and spun both wool and yarns on cold winter nights
Imported German and French pottery highlights how connected these Highland communities were to the flow of goods and ideas across Europe
challenging the tired old narratives of backwardness and isolation
government troops were billeted with the Clan MacDonald of Glen Coe ostensibly for the purposes of collecting taxes (a normal practice at the time)
After 13 days with soldiers in their midst
the “tacksman” or leader of this settlement
sat through the night with his brother and his friends around the fire
or worrying over the presence of the soldiers in their community
a volley of 18 musket shots ripped through the doors and windows of his house
MacDonald asked to be taken outside rather than being killed in his own home
But he ripped off his plaid and flung it over the soldiers with their muskets raised to kill him and escaped into the inky darkness of the bleak February morning. From there he climbed through the blizzard over the passes south to safety. Three years later, he and other survivors gave evidence to a Scottish government commission of enquiry
whose report preserves their accounts of what happened
During the excavations in Achnacon earlier this year
the finds from the turf-built house we believe to have belonged to MacDonald of Achnacon included a bent plaid pin and two pieces of lead musket shot
The latest datable artefact found in this house was a coin of 1690 – just two years before the massacre
While we can’t necessarily pin individual artefacts directly to these events
we can use these tangible traces of the past to bring life to stories handed down for generations
and weave new narratives about life and death in Glen Coe
It matters how we tell these stories. Working with the National Trust for Scotland and the Glencoe Folk Museum, one of us (Lizzie Robertson) has been developing a series of audio installations which transport the visitor from the present day to landscapes brimming with life and legends
We hear herds and herders hastening to the summer shielings (huts in the hills)
and the boggy fringes of the townships being haunted by Gaelic water creatures such as the tarbh uisge
Part of our mission is teaching new generations of students not just to excavate and survey but to communicate ideas and tell stories to different audiences in different ways
Our team has been working with students to develop short films
podcasts and audio installations which offer visitors new ways of experiencing the landscape
The National Trust for Scotland’s new Greenway that allows visitors to walk
wheel and cycle safely through the glen runs straight past the site of the village
giving opportunities for visitors to really engage with the place
Just as stories in the past offered lessons to those who would listen, there is a place for stories today to help us adjust to life in a changing world
inspiring resilience in the present through understanding how communities adapted to challenges in the past
We are working to evoke the busy-ness of this landscape, shaped and reshaped by successive generations. Our stories range from great events such as the massacre of Glen Coe and the highland clearances that came later
to everyday acts that leave ephemeral threads to be unwound through delicate excavation

with a new monarch on the throne of England and Scotland in the person of King William III
The hoard was found hidden beneath the hearthstone in the summer house belonging to the clan chieftain of the MacDonalds of Glencoe
The 36 coins were located inside a small pot identified by student archaeologist Lucy Ankers

“The site will see significant rerouting aimed at shortening green-to-tee walks
An abundance of artificial shaping work will be removed

“Much needed tree clearing in select locations will allow the golf to make the most of several natural ridges that transect the property
Existing wide corridors will provide the canvas needed to create thoughtful and varied strategies on each hole

The campaign follows the publication of a joint study with Transport Scotland examining motorcycle fatalities between January 2015 and August 2024
The study found that 269 people – including 253 riders and 16 passengers – were killed during that period
Despite accounting for less than 1% of traffic
motorcyclists represented 18% of all road fatalities in Scotland
said: “Ross was just an ordinary guy doing what he loved – out on a sunny day on a motorbike with his friends
“We’re not the same people we were before – it changed everything
Our outlook on life now is just take every day as it comes

“My message to everyone using the roads is simple – open your eyes and look again
from Police Scotland’s National Motorcycle Unit said: “Motorcyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users
They have far less protection than those in cars
“We’re encouraging motorcyclists to take their time
and enjoy the roads safely – particularly when overtaking
we’d encourage riders to consider opportunities like Rider Refinement
that helps improve skills and build awareness of the risks involved
“Other road users also have a responsibility to look out for motorcyclists

The Crimson Tide shot 306 to finish ahead of 5A contenders Summit (322)
“It just gives us another marker out there,” Glencoe coach Tyler Armstrong said of winning on the state championship course
I want them to continue to work toward peaking at the end of the season
Glencoe has been led by seniors Brody Landaker
“It's been really fun to watch them develop
starting their freshman year all the way to now,” said Armstrong
a 2009 Glencoe graduate who took over as head coach this year after assisting Tim Duvall for eight seasons
Landaker shot an even-par 72 to tie for second place with Bend senior Gustav Kristofferson
one shot behind Canby freshman Connor Holden
The Cougars other scorers were Irving (76)
Meiers (79) and senior Giovanni Gallardo (79)
It came on the heels of Glencoe shooting a 305 on the Ghost Creek course at Pumpkin Ridge
Landaker shot 2-under 69 to edge Sherwood junior Tiger Lu by one stroke for medalist honors
junior Calvin Johnson (79) and Meiers (80) rounded out the Crimson Tide's scoring
has been “the rock of our team,” according to Armstrong
He has made big strides since he began playing competitive golf as a freshman
and other times it can drag him down for a hole or two
Where Brody's at right now is really exciting
He's going to have a round where it all clicks one day.”
The youngest of three brothers to play for Glencoe
Armstrong believes the 6-foot-3 Landaker has a high ceiling
“There's a lot of juice left to squeeze with Brody,” he said
His improvement was apparent in a Pacific Conference tournament April 8 at Meriwether National Golf Club when he shot an even-par 72 in inclement weather to win by six strokes
Armstrong said his players are mentally better equipped to handle poor conditions than last year
when they struggled with the weather on the second day of the state tournament
“They were kind of giving in to the conditions,” Armstrong said
I feel with a little bit more maturity last year
is hoping to bring home a trophy from the 6A tournament
we have the ability to punch our way up there.”

JACKSONVILLE — Grant Smith wasn’t born the last time Glencoe’s boys’ basketball team played in a Final Four
That reality the Glencoe center and his teammates had just earned their way in hadn’t quite set in Tuesday
minutes after the Yellow Jackets beat Piedmont 77-63 in the Class 3A Northeast Regional final in Pete Mathews Coliseum
“I know we’re going to do good,” Smith said
because I’ve never been on a big stage like this.”
Most valuable player Garrett Morgan led four Yellow Jackets (25-7) in double figures with 20 points Tuesday
They will play the Montgomery Academy-Lee-Scott Academy winner on Feb
Glencoe earned its first Final Four shot since 2000
but Glencoe coach Ryan Chambless has experienced it as a player for Alexandria and a coach
He led Jacksonville’s girls to two Final Fours
including their run to the Class 4A state title
“I can’t think of a group I’ve coached that’s more deserving of this honor,” Chambless said
Glencoe also got 16 points apiece from Smith and Wade Segrest
who joined Morgan on the all-tournament team
It was enough to overcome a 28-point outburst from Piedmont’s Ishmael Bethel
who hit two of his 3-pointers in back-to-back possessions to close the gap to 68-62 with two minutes to play
Bethel and Pinto made the all-tournament team
The Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets battled four times this season
with Piedmont sweeping the regular season and earning the right to play host to the area tournament
Glencoe won the area and regional title games
“They’re a great basketball team,” Piedmont coach Matt Glover said
and they played a better game than us today.”
Glencoe shot 64.3 percent (27 of 42) from the floor Tuesday
The Yellow Jackets also held Piedmont to 41.3 percent shooting
including a 2-for-14 slump in the third quarter
Glencoe outscored Piedmont 18-5 in the third quarter to lead 48-35 going into the fourth
“They do a good job of making you attack and hit your twos
and they really don’t help off of us to let us shoot the threes,” Glover said
“I think that’s his game plan the last two times.”
Tuesday’s game marked the high school finales for Piedmont’s four seniors
Bethel called Piedmont’s season “impressive.”
We fought all the way through the fourth quarter
I didn’t see none of my teammates holding their heads down

Police in Gadsden and Glencoe will now be pooling some of their efforts following the Gadsden City Council’s approval on Feb
11 of a street crimes and narcotics mutual aid agreement between the departments
Mayor Craig Ford’s liaison to the police department
told council members during their pre-council work session that Glencoe had approached the city about the collaboration “since we have a couple of neighborhoods that butt up to one another that are high drug-use areas.”
“We decided it was in our best interest to join forces
Glencoe has two drug dogs and we have zero
and they also have a test kit that we don’t have access to
It’s really a marriage made in heaven if there’s such a thing with police departments
The agreement will initially focus on those adjacent areas

Glencoe football has its newest head coach
Blanchard had been the interim head coach and was the defensive coordinator during the 2024 season
That's one of the reasons I wanted to be there
I wanted to be around great people," Blanchard said

Blanchard will become one of the youngest head coaches in the state at just 26 years old

the longtime Piedmont defensive coordinator who followed Smith to Westbrook Christian
to not only me and my sisters but to all the kids he coached," Blanchard said
Blanchard came to Glencoe in 2022 as an assistant before taking on the junior high head coach role in 2023

the Yellow Jackets have fallen to the depths of Etowah County
not winning more than three games in a single season and with a record of 15-75 over the past nine seasons
Glencoe has a rich history with a state title in 1973 and six region titles
so there's recent history showing what the program can be
For Glencoe seniors Camden Roofener and Brody Sahlfeld and junior Isaac Reynoso
motivation and determination — seem to go together
The Crimson Tide’s terrific trio of grapplers
coming off a football campaign in which they had outstanding seasons in helping Glencoe claim the Northwest Oregon Conference championship
kept right on rolling in the wrestling season
Roofener and Sahlfeld won individual championships at the Pacific Conference district wrestling tournament at Liberty High School
the title-winning victories marked their second consecutive district wrestling crown
We have a picture up in our athletic training office of the three of us after we won last year
and we really wanted to go out and repeat that,” Reynoso said after his 4-3 win over Forest Grove’s Brandon Cook in the 175-pound district title match
just doing everything we could to get to that level of getting another district championship under our belts.”
Glencoe junior Isaac Reynoso gets his hand raised after his 4-3 decision victory over Forest Grove’s Brandon Cook in the 175-pound title match at the Pacific Conference district tournament
coming back,” Sahlfeld said after his dramatic win over Newberg’s Austin Phillips in the 285-pound district title bout
It’s hard to describe,” Roofener said after he pinned Sherwood’s Andres Hernandez in the 190-pound district championship contest
Getting it again — that provided the Glencoe trio with some extra motivation
and you have to hold yourself to it,” Roofener said
One of the keys to getting that — another district wrestling title — is football
football and wrestling correlate with each other a lot,” Reynoso said
“You have to be extremely aggressive in both sports
and the stamina from wrestling goes over to football in the running and aggression and tackling and hitting other people
You just have to be a monster in both sports.”
“Football is really good for wrestling,” Roofener said
“It really helps me stay in shape and stay competitive
I didn’t start football until I was a freshman
and that really transitioned over to wrestling

was named the NWOC Offensive Lineman of the Year in addition to being a first-team all-conference pick at offensive lineman and a second-team selection on the defensive line
He was a Class 5A second-team all-state pick on the offensive line
“They definitely help each other,” Sahlfeld said of football and wrestling
“I’ve been wrestling since I was real young and I started football my freshman year
and body positioning has really helped me.”
Glencoe senior Brody Sahlfeld (left) looks to lock up with Newberg’s Austin Phillips in the 285-pound title bout at the Pacific Conference district tournament
who has received offers to play college football from George Fox University and Lewis & Clark College
earned first-team all-NWOC honors at tight end and on the defensive line
He was a second-team all-state selection at tight end and an honorable mention pick on the defensive line
Reynoso was a first-team all-NWOC selection and an honorable mention all-state pick at linebacker
who also competes in the hurdles for the Glencoe track and field team
“I was raised on being a three-sport athlete
you’re well-rounded in many different ways
Someone who definitely agrees with that is Ian Reynoso
who is the head football coach and an assistant wrestling coach at Glencoe
“I think it’s a huge testament to developing multi-sport athletes,” said Ian Reynoso
who also is a track and field coach at Glencoe
“Football and wrestling are both extremely combative sports
You have to be willing to put yourself through stuff that a lot of people aren’t willing to do.”
Isaac Reynoso was the first of Glencoe’s finalists to take the mat for last Monday’s district championship matches
getting a takedown with 34 seconds left in the second round

“Isaac winning motivated me,” Roofener said
coming back and watching Brody was amazing.”

He pinned Phillips eight seconds later for the victory
“I just really had to focus and channel my last energy
‘This is a win-or-die moment,’” Sahlfeld said of those final seconds
There also might have been a little pressure added
which could have helped spur Sahlfeld to victory
I knew I had to get it done as well,” Sahlfeld said
because I wasn’t going to let them have that over me.”
making it 3 for 3 for Glencoe in the finals
the loudest cheers might have come from Isaac Reynoso and Roofener
I’ve been with these two for a long time,” Reynoso said
and we’ve been together wrestling since we’ve been in elementary school
and to get this two times in a row with these amazing guys is a blessing.”
“We’re a pretty tight group,” Roofener said
“We’ve been together through everything — sports and activities
Glencoe senior Brody Sahlfeld lets out a yell after pinning Newberg’s Austin Phillips in the 285-pound championship match at the Pacific Conference district tournament
Roofener and Sahlfeld are going to the Class 6A state tournament
28-March 1 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland
they’re all looking for something bigger and better
we’re all trying to win it,” Isaac Reynoso said
“We’re all going for state championships this year
to do something that hasn’t been done at Glencoe in a long time.”
“I’m hoping to win state this year — that’s my goal,” Roofener said
Glencoe’s other two automatic qualifiers for the state tournament (top three at district) — Noel Wood
who was third at 285 — are also football players at Glencoe
it looks like the Glencoe football-wrestling connection is going to go on for a while
“I joined the wrestling staff because of (Crimson Tide head coach) Jason Harless,” Ian Reynoso said
“My first year on the staff (2022-23 season)
I think seven or eight of our placers here tonight are football players
“It’s really fun to see these guys continue their success from football

Glencoe High School is moving on from Scott Martin as head football coach
the coach and school confirmed to the Gadsden Times on Friday
Martin said that principal Wendy Tinker decided to go in a different direction but that he is planning on staying at the school through the end of his teaching contract
Athletic Director Ryan Chambless said that Bayley Blanchard will be the interim as the Yellow Jackets look for their next head coach
The move comes after three straight losing seasons and a regression back to a 2-8 record during the 2024 AHSAA season
Martin held a 7-23 record over the three seasons and didn't make the playoffs
Martin thanked Glencoe in a statement he posted on Facebook and later shared with the Gadsden Times
I want to thank everyone that makes up the Glencoe Football Program for allowing me to be the Head Football Coach for the last 3 years
While I am disappointed with yesterday's administrative meeting
I certainly understand the decision to take the program in a different direction
The last 3 years have been great in terms of the relationships built between the players
I am disappointed that I was not able to change the direction in terms of wins and losses
but take pride in knowing that we have improved every other facet of the program
wins and losses seem to be the only thing that matters
Our young men have been a pleasure to coach and will be assets to the Glencoe Community as they graduate and proceed in "life." Glencoe Football will always hold a special place in my heart and I will continue to be a "fan" from afar regardless of where I am coaching or "loving ❤️ life every day," Martin wrote
Martin appeared to be the guy who could lead the Yellow Jackets back to glory when he was hired in 2021 coming over from Ohatchee
He was 57-24 there and led it to at least the third round three times in seven years
He came with a history of rebuilding programs in Alabama and Louisiana
Before Martin got to Ohatchee it had 10 straight losing seasons
He led Ohatchee to five playoff appearances and five straight winning seasons
He was placed on paid administrative leave during the 2021 season for unreleased reasons
Martin spent time at Hillcrest Tuscaloosa and Calera
In Alabama he holds a 90-65 record with nine playoff appearances

It's been a rough stretch for the Yellow Jackets since making a run to the Class 3A semifinals back in 2014
They went 9-2 the next year in Lee Ozmint's last season leading them
From there they haven't won more than three games in a season
This next hire will be the fifth coach the Yellow Jackets will hire since Ozmint left in 2015
They are looking to return to the prominence that Ozmint and others brought
Glencoe boys basketball assistant coach Lacey Buchanon has been breaking down barriers this season
Buchanon played point guard for Yellow Jackets coach Ryan Chambless when he led the Jacksonville girls basketball program
They won the 2012 state title together before Buchanon left to play college ball at Gadsden State
Troy and ultimately returned to her hometown to play for Jax State
She continued to stay in touch with her high school coach and after Glencoe hired Chambless in 2021 to lead its boys program
he’s been bringing in high level assistants
Wes Weems and now football coach Bayley Blanchard have been on staff alongside Beau Stewart for three years
Buchanon is in her first year on the staff
There's a simple reason Buchanon is coaching boys basketball
even if its rare to see a female assistant on the bench in boys athletics: It's the connection she had with her old high school coach
"Me and (Chambless) never lost contact when I went to college
The reason I'm on the boys side is because he's on the boys side
I'm going to follow him where ever he goes."
especially running the machine at point guard
gave Buchanon a unique perspective of how his system should look on the court
it's been great to have one of his former players back on the bench
Great attitude about everything in life and very knowledgeable about basketball
"Just to have her around its great and she's been a blessing to me for a long time."

While Buchanon is probably just one of the few female assistants on boys high school teams
males coach female teams at every level but really at the end of the day basketball is basketball
regardless whether it's men or women on the court
"I've been playing against guys my whole life
It's the game of basketball," Buchanon said
males coach women so a female can do the same thing

1/42Oregon high school football: Lebanon vs Glencoe Crimson Tide.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Joe Zochert | for The Oregonian/OregonLiveLebanon football perhaps had a flare for the dramatics not once
but twice on Friday night to seal a thrilling 29-27 upset over Glencoe in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs
outscoring the Crimson Tide (7-3) to make up for a slow start at Hare Field as quarterback Brison Edwards and wide receiver Logan Large lead the charge
Trailing 27-21 while facing a 4th-and-12 situation
the junior duo connected for the game-tying pass as Large burned his defender for the catch to tie the score with 16 seconds remaining
After an encroachment call on the Crimson Tide
Lebanon opted to have Edwards run to the outside on a keeper for the final nail in the coffin
“I knew it was the last play,” Large said about his touchdown catch
the line would block and I could get the ball easily
after that we could have kicked the extra point
But there was the flag on the first one and we thought
‘let’s just run that with the QB because he has been running great the whole game.’”
Large hauled in seven catches for 88 passing yards to pace Lebanon and also served as a safe option for Edwards
The junior also swung momentum in the second quarter by returning a 65-yard kickoff with a nifty reverse; this playoff game was just the environment for him to show off some of his playmaking skills
he can make the routine into something special,” Lebanon head coach Troy Walker said
“We got 10 other kids that’ll do everything they need to do to support him
you just never know what’s gonna happen and sometimes it’s special.”
keeping the team afloat in the first half by finding Zech Halsey on a slant route for a 35-yard touchdown pass after falling behind 14-0
The junior quarterback went 14 for 21 on pass attempts and tallied 161 passing yards along with a 14-yard touchdown rush to tie the score at 21-all in the third quarter
“Our offense was doing great,” Edwards said about the first half
Our defense held up great in the second half
it really was a relief and gave us a little momentum moving into the second half.”
Walker added: “(Edwards) is such a dynamic kid and his decision making has gotten immensely better this year with the weapons that we have
Lebanon will hope that the second half momentum will travel to Bend as the team takes on the second-seeded Mountain View next Friday
With the buzzer sounding after its final possession of the season
Glencoe could only pat itself on the back after a strong first season at the 5A level
The final downs on defense were strong with Aidan Beauchamp breaking up a pass and the defensive line held Edwards from scrambling into the end zone on two broken plays
the Crimson Tide also committed three penalties for 35 yards on the drive to keep the window open for Lebanon to take victory
physical high school football teams playing back and forth,” Crimson Tide head coach Ian Reynoso said
Running back Daniel Heninger was the engine for Glencoe
Heninger also found the end zone for three scores including a 52-yard burst for the first touchdown of the game
The junior was also the catalyst to break the 21-all tie in the fourth quarter
being the focal point on every drive with 12 carries for 62 yards and had a clutch catch for 20 yards on fourth down before Glencoe missed the extra point
“He’s gonna give us everything he has,” Reynoso said
“So just bless the thing that we get to have him for another year
He’s a fantastic kid and a great playmaker with a ball in his hands.”
Reynoso also echoed how proud he was of the program and “climbing the ladder” with the goal on Friday night being to win their first playoff game since 2013
the coach pointed to the undefeated league season and capturing the Special District 1 title last week as a massive positive
I always talk about our goals being a ladder,” he said
“Winning a league game was one rung of the ladder
having a winning record in league was another
We just continued to climb and made the playoffs and wanted to get a playoff win and that was a huge goal of ours

1/41AHSAA 3A boys semifinal: Glencoe vs. Montgomery Academy.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Ben Thomas | bthomas@al.comMontgomery Academy has had its eyes on the school’s first AHSAA state basketball title all season
The second-ranked Eagles will have a chance to win it Friday
Montgomery Academy outscored Glencoe 22-12 in the second quarter and 25-9 in the third on the way to an 84-49 semifinal rout Tuesday afternoon at Legacy Arena
“It’s just the second time in school history that we’ve made it this far,” Eagles’ coach Jeremy Arant said
“I would be lying if I told you it wasn’t something we have been talking about all the way back to May or June
“We didn’t come this far to lose,” MA senior Skyler Stovall said
“We are going to go after it and go get it.”
The Eagles pulled away from Glencoe early behind a dominating rebounding effort
Montgomery Academy outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 45-17
leading to a 64-20 advantage in points in the paint and a 20-0 advantage in second-chance points
“(MA assistant) coach (Gerald) Williams came in a month ago and said he thought our biggest advantage going forward would be offensive rebounding and rebounding in general because of the size of our guards,” Arant said
“It’s something we work on every day and stress every day
The kids bought in and realized if they crashed the boards they could get some easy baskets.”
It worked Thursday as MA pulled down 19 offensive rebounds
“One statistic you always look at is rebounding,” Glencoe coach Ryan Chambless said
MA led just 24-15 after one quarter but began pulling away in the second quarter
The Eagles led 46-25 at the half and 71-34 after three quarters
Arant began emptying the bench late in the third quarter

Stars of the game: Stovall and Braden Gordon each scored 17 for MA
“I don’t know if Skyler has competed any harder against anyone than he does against Braden in practice,” Arant said
“They have full on battle every day in practice.”
Stat sheet: Montgomery Academy – Jarrett Friendly had 16 points and 6 rebounds
Glencoe – Garett Morgan led all scorers with 20 points
By the numbers: MA took 23 more shots than Glencoe (68-45)
The Eagles were 6-of-11 from 3 and 2-of-6 from the foul line
Glencoe was 5-of-21 from 3 and 15-of-15 from the foul line
The Eagles also had huge advantages in points off turnovers (25-4)
fastbreak points (33-7) and bench points (30-7)
Glencoe led for 12 seconds in the game at 3-2
Montgomery Academy’s only losses this year came against a pair of ranked Class 7A teams in Auburn and Huntsville
“I have all the respect for Glencoe and what coach does
They are one of the hardest teams to prepare for
This was really the first time we have taken time to go over the things a team does in the halfcourt
Our kids bought in to defending and guarding as a team
and that has been the difference for us this year
it seems like we have six or seven guys out there
proud of this team and especially the seniors
They brought a lot of tradition back to Glencoe
I’m proud of the effort and their approach to every practice and every game all year long
I told them to walk out with their head held high
They are very well coached and have a lot of length and size
