Eight bodies have been retrieved after a bakkie was swept into a stream while trying to cross a flooded low-water bridge in Heilbron
Police spokesperson Loraine Earle says that on Sunday
and their bodies were discovered on Monday morning
Earle says the victims include a 71-year-old man with his wife and their three grandchildren
a husband and wife together with their 2-year-old child
“The occupants left Heilbron on Saturday afternoon but never reached their destination
They were reported missing at Heilbron police station and discovered the next morning

the Free State police announced a significant breakthrough in their fight against illegal firearms
set to appear in the Heilbron Magistrate Court on charges of “possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition” and “conspiracy to commit a crime.” The arrests
made by the Fezile Dabi District Tactical Response Team on Saturday
followed a high-stakes operation that led to the seizure of two pistols
This operation underscores ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in the Free State
with two of the suspects identified as Lesotho nationals
highlighting cross-border crime challenges
The operation began when the Fezile Dabi District Tactical Response Team received a tip-off at “approximately 15:00” on Saturday
According to police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani
the team was alerted to a “white VW Polo” travelling on the R57 towards Heilbron
with its occupants suspected of carrying “unlawful firearms and ammunition.” Acting swiftly
the team located and intercepted the vehicle
apprehending the three men inside without incident
Sergeant Rani detailed the outcome: “Two pistols
and a white Volkswagen Polo were confiscated.” The seizure of these items points to the potential for serious criminal activity
with the charge of “conspiracy to commit a crime” suggesting the suspects may have been planning a robbery or similar offence
The presence of cellphones among the confiscated items could indicate communication networks linked to criminal enterprises
A notable aspect of the case is the nationality of the suspects
Sergeant Rani confirmed that “two of the arrested individuals are Lesotho nationals,” raising concerns about cross-border crime in the Free State
This detail aligns with broader regional efforts to tackle the smuggling of illegal firearms
often linked to organised crime syndicates operating between South Africa and its neighbours
underscores the collaborative nature of criminal networks
The arrests highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement in border regions
where illegal firearms are frequently trafficked to fuel violent crimes such as armed robberies
has seen increased police operations targeting such activities
with the Tactical Response Team playing a pivotal role
The trio is scheduled to appear before the Heilbron Magistrate Court on Monday
facing charges of “possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition” and “conspiracy to commit a crime.” These charges carry significant penalties under South African law
with the Firearms Control Act of 2000 imposing up to seven years’ imprisonment for possession of unlicensed firearms
and conspiracy charges potentially escalating based on the intended crime’s severity

South African retailers are set for a positive festive season this year, with research commissioned by Capital Connect* indicating that Black Friday and festive season retail spending could increase 6.5% in nominal terms compared to 2023
Given that Black Friday and the festive season are expected to account for 21.9% of annual retail sales
this is the most important period in the retail calendar
With inflation easing to 2.8% in October
retailers have an opportunity to capitalise on improved consumer confidence and spending

retailers are turning to fast financing and automated cash management solutions to maximise sales and efficiencies,” he adds
“The green shoots we are seeing in the economy are creating a wealth of opportunities for innovative retailers over the festive season
Retailers that anticipate and drive demand with compelling offerings and exciting customer experiences will have an edge in a competitive market
It’s all about coming up with creative ideas and moving faster than the competition to execute.”
Heilbron shares some ideas about how retailers can make the best of the festive season:
short-term financing tailored to retailers’ unique needs is the key to capitalising on these opportunities to grow your business
It enables you to move fast to take advantage of time-limited opportunities like making strategic bulk buys at time-limited prices.”
“Capital Connect offers frictionless retail business funding of up to R5 million
with funds in the retailer’s bank account in just 24 hours
You can apply for a smart loan by clicking and borrowing from an app
with minimal red tape and no need for audited financials
We offer repayment in small daily instalments to help you manage your cash flow.”

Mark Templemore-Walters, Operations Director at Cash Connect
the automated cash management division of the Connect Group
adds: “Cash management may become a challenge over the festive season
Not only does the volume of cash flowing into a business increase
but the number of public holidays means banks are open on fewer days and there are fewer normal business days for cash-in-transit pickups
“A robust cash management solution with an intelligent cash vault or smart ATM recycler

All-Boeing operator Copa Airlines anticipates taking 13 737 Max jets this year – two more than it had previously expected – under a revised delivery schedule from the US airframer.
The carrier has been advised by Boeing to expect only six 737 Max jets in 2026
The revised figures were disclosed by Copa chief executive Pedro Heilbron during the company’s 13 February earnings call
Heilbron maintains that Copa is “perfectly fine” with the new delivery schedule
based on the opportunities it sees for new routes and increased frequencies

Copa holds unfilled orders for four Max 8s and 15 Max 10s – suggesting that Boeing believes it will be delivering some of its yet-to-be certificated Max 10s to customers in the year’s second half.
Max 7 and Max 10 certification has been long-delayed as the Federal Aviation Administration has dialled up scrutiny of the programmes following the 2018 and 2019 Max crashes that killed 364 people combined.
Last month, Boeing disclosed it is seeking another regulatory exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration
this time relating to a stall-management yaw damper system.
Amid ongoing fleet-growth constraints – and despite the grounding of its entire Max 9 fleet early last year – Panama City-based Copa posted a $609 million profit for the full year of 2024
up more than 18% from its prior-year profit of $514 million.

US low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines is partnering with regional carrier Contour Airlines in a deal intended to connect essential air service (EAS) markets with popular leisure destinations.
The Trump administration’s “skinny” 2026 budget request includes $308 million of proposed cuts to the Essential Air Service (EAS) programme that subsidises regional airline flights to rural communities throughout the USA.
US carrier JetBlue Airways reports an improving engine-availability situation as it has fewer aircraft grounded for Pratt & Whitney turbofan overhauls than previously expected.
Transat AT has struck a new support agreement for the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engines that power its narrowbody Airbus aircraft.
Executives with United Airlines on 16 April insisted that the carrier will not pay significantly more for Airbus or Boeing aircraft as a result of tariffs on US trading partners.

“The police service is pleased to announce a significant development in our ongoing efforts to bring justice to victims of violent crimes.”
The husband of a slain Free State magistrate
has finally been extradited from Lesotho following months of intensive legal and diplomatic efforts
a magistrate at the Heilbron Regional Court at the time of her death
was allegedly kidnapped and murdered by her husband
He was detained in Lesotho since his arrest on 22 September last year
a few days after his wife’s body was discovered
He allegedly fled to the neighbouring country shortly after the alleged murder
sparking a manhunt that involved cooperation between the South African police
a suspect in the murder case of the Heilbron magistrate
was extradited from Lesotho to South Africa
marking a critical step forward in the pursuit of justice
Free State police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele expressed the significance of the development
“SAPS is pleased to announce a significant development in our ongoing efforts to bring justice to victims of violent crimes
“We have successfully facilitated the extradition of Lehlohonolo Makotoane
The extradition processes were launched following all applicable legal protocols and with the cooperation of Lesotho authorities.”
Thame’s body was repatriated to South Africa shortly after its discovery in Lesotho
where it underwent a post-mortem examination before her burial
Makotoane first appeared in the Mokhotlong Magistrate’s Court in Lesotho on 26 September on charges of murder
had previously confirmed to OFM News that the necessary documentation to expedite the process was delivered in November 2023
Somaru highlighted the importance of adhering to legal protocols and timelines during such a sensitive case
At about 04:00 the following morning her car left the premises
Police spokesperson Loraine Earle said the cell phone and clothes of her husband also appeared to be missing
Her clothes and cell phone were still at home and there is a strong suspicion that the vehicle drove through the Ficksburg port of entry into Lesotho
Makotoane is expected to appear in the Heilbron Magistrate’s Court on Friday (23/8)

established the history of science as a professional discipline
he sought to slay enduring myths created by his predecessors
some of which had become embedded in popular culture
His book The Sun in the Church: Cathedrals as Solar Observatories (1999) helped dispel the falsehood that science and religion exist in a state of perpetual warfare
A desire to fix the date of Easter was one of the things that led the Roman Catholic church to give more financial and social support to the science of astronomy than any other institution
His biography Galileo (2010) viewed the astronomer as a man embroiled in the culture of late Renaissance Italy
Galileo’s scientific success sparked off in him a megalomania and a recklessness that set him at odds with friends
Two further myths were slain: of Galileo the intellectual Platonist
obsessed with ideas about the natural world
and of Galileo the first experimental scientist
View image in fullscreenYet even as John’s work changed our understanding of the emergence of science in the scientific revolution of which Galileo was part
“The myth you slay today may contain a truth you need tomorrow,” he declared
In work whose reach extended to contemporary quantum physics
he understood that writing a coherent and universal history of science is as remote as recreating the big bang origin of the universe
Born in San Francisco, John was the son of Delphine (nee Rosenblatt) and Louis Heilbron
a lawyer who served as the first chairman of the board of trustees of what is now the California University system
From Lowell high school John went to the University of California
and gained a BA (1955) and MA (1958) in physics
He became the first graduate student of the philosopher Thomas Kuhn
Encouraged by the belief that the future security of cold war America rested on fostering an understanding of “the tactics and strategy of science”
Kuhn had been asked to prepare historical case studies
This led him to the conclusion that the “route to enlightenment about science ran through the swamp of history”
When Kuhn moved from Harvard to Berkeley, John joined him as his student and helped prepare his influential text The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962)
This was an attempt to understand scientific progress in terms of periods of “normal” science conducted within a prevailing “paradigm” of unquestioned knowledge
punctuated by scientific revolutions in which the paradigms would shift
The book would reach far beyond its intended audience
John became sceptical of both his philosophy of science and his approach to studying its history
Kuhn had figured that the right way to do history was to “climb into other people’s heads”
But John came to appreciate that Kuhn “climbed about in only small and isolated spots in the heads he hunted”
He realised that this kind of selective approach risks populating history with bloodless ciphers
amounting to nothing more than small collections of their technical papers and letters
To do history properly required objective analysis of the often complex social
political and intellectual forces that helped promote scientific discoveries
And it demanded acknowledgement of the simple fact that the scientists at the centres of these discoveries were complete human beings
Before The Structure of Scientific Revolutions was published
Kuhn was invited to lead a wide-ranging project to conduct tape-recorded interviews directly with those scientists who had facilitated the development of quantum mechanics in the 1920s
and microfilm copies of their correspondence and unpublished manuscripts
John was appointed assistant director and he and another graduate student joined Kuhn in Copenhagen in the summer of 1962
inventor of the atomic theory that would underpin later quantum discoveries
The project quickly gained a sense of urgency
Bohr died just a few weeks after interviewing began
The three-year project led to the creation of an important archive, entitled Sources for the History of Quantum Physics
John’s PhD dissertation was concerned with Bohr’s atomic theory, a subject to which he returned in his more than 20 books, most notably in Love, Literature and the Quantum Atom (with Finn Aaserud, 2013), and Niels Bohr: A Very Short Introduction (2019).
Bohr was the subject that brought me into John’s orbit in 2019, and led to an enjoyable four-year collaboration. The fruit of this collaboration will be another book, Quantum Drama: From the Bohr-Einstein Debate to the Riddle of Entanglement, to be published in April. I am hopeful it will slay a few more myths.
Following a brief spell at the University of Pennsylvania, John joined the history faculty back at Berkeley in 1967, and six years later was appointed professor and established the Office for History of Science and Technology there. From 1990 to 1994 he was the university’s vice-chancellor.
He served as editor of the journal Historical Studies in the Physical (now Natural) Sciences, and as editor-in-chief of the Oxford Companion to the History of Science and the Oxford Guide to the History of Physics.
The recipient of numerous honorary doctorates and awards, John was president of l’Académie Internationale d’Histoire des Sciences (2001-05).
In 1959 he married Patricia Lucero; she died in 1993. Two years later he married Alison Browning.
In September they travelled to Padua, where he was scheduled to speak about Galileo at a conference of physicists and historians.
While there he was diagnosed with leukaemia.
John Lewis Heilbron, historian of science, born 17 March 1934; died 5 November 2023
The Bridge project commenced early last year in Heilbron
with a scheduled completion date of September 2023
Despite numerous articles highlighting our concern about the project in our local newspaper
construction progressed for a mere two months before abruptly halting

it seems unlikely that any progress will occur in the next 4-5 months
The incomplete bridge poses a serious threat
especially in light of the approaching rainy season
hindering further progress and potentially jeopardising public well-being
We will address these concerns in the council by demanding answers on the bridge’s completion date
we strongly urge the municipality to initiate an investigation into the delayed project
seeking answers on the reasons behind the overdue timeline and the whereabouts of the funds allocated for its completion

The last remaining Holocaust survivor in KwaZulu-Natal
passed away in the early hours of 13 January in Durban
her mother and sister were the only Holocaust survivors in their immediate family
where she became politically active in the anti-apartheid movement and was jailed several times for her activism
She was also professionally involved in early childhood education outreach projects
and her hugs will last much longer than from the moment that she let go
“Take a good look at what’s happening around you
Don’t ever turn around and say it’s not there because it’s not affecting you,” Heilbron once said
according to a testimony from the Durban Holocaust & Genocide Centre (DHGC)
prepared for a publication in Survivor Stories volume one
Heilbron (née Haymann) couldn’t be sure of her exact birthdate
It could have been anywhere from 1938 to 1940
Her first clear memories began around the age of seven
established by Nazi Germany to hold the Lithuanian Jews of Kaunas during the Holocaust
most of whom were later sent to concentration and extermination camps or were shot at the Ninth Fort stronghold in Kaunas
Heilbron remembered very little except sleeping with her sister and grandmother like sardines on the floor
She knew her mother was with them at that time
the head of the Ältestenrat (council of elders) in the Kovno ghetto
helped to create a scheme to smuggle out young children from the ghetto with the help of the Catholic Church
Heilbron’s mother managed to smuggle her daughter out of the ghetto in this way
Then they arranged to drop these children into a sack and into a cart as if it was waste,” Heilbron recalled
“I was the first child put over the wall [in this way] and taken to a Catholic safe house.”
Heilbron spent the following years protected by a group of Catholic nuns and priests
They were constantly on the move to avoid detection by the Nazis
She remembered once being hidden inside a pit toilet during a Nazi raid of the convent
she was left with “a whole lot of fanatical hang-ups” about being clean
for years she was unable to use a public toilet without wearing a mask
The nuns handed Heilbron over to the Red Cross at the end of the war
She was adopted by her father’s friend and colleague
who had survived the Auschwitz concentration camp
Heilbron’s mother arranged with a Jewish underground group to kidnap her from the Levin family
“Although I hadn’t seen her probably since I was two
I just knew it was my mother and I was related to her.”
Once Heilbron was reunited with her mother and sister
they made their way to Tanzania to start a new life as the only survivors of their immediate family
and two brothers who were murdered in the Holocaust]
but my sister refuses to talk about them,” she said
Heilbron said she felt she never really knew her mother
she believed her mother returned mentally to Auschwitz
She lived with dementia for seven years until her death
an inmate of a Nazi camp appointed as a guard
she would get up and huddle under the bed,” Heilbron said
Although she opened up to members of the local community about her story
she gave her testimony on camera only in 2008 because “I didn’t regard myself as a survivor,” she said
Through a connection in the Durban community
she was reunited with the other girls the nuns had protected
They had been searching for her for 40 years
“They knew more about me than I knew about myself.” This group of survivors succeeded in having the priest and the nuns who had rescued them recognised at Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations
Heilbron became a guide at the emerging DHGC
She went on to become a stalwart volunteer at the centre
She was central to the team and integral in all the centre’s programmes
but what moved me the most was a survivor story of Carmela Heilbron and how courageous she was,” said one of the hundreds of students who had the privilege of spending time with Heilbron
she dedicated her life to helping others.”
Heilbron constantly reminded visitors to the centre what her mother had told her
it just compounds itself into a hideous situation,” Heilbron said
Heilbron suffered another tragedy when her daughter
but not so the world can see you.’ That was reflective of her selflessness
My mom was incredibly dedicated to her children
‘There’s no great gain without great sacrifice.’ This is something I’ve probably taken too seriously in my own life
‘You live and die through your Jewish identity.’”

Stellantis has appointed two new senior executives to head the marketing and sales functions of Fiat UK
who was recently head of regional operations for Jeep
Abarth and the Fiat Professional light commercial vehicle businesses
Prior to joining Stellantis in 2010 Heilbron worked with AM100 dealer group Lookers
Vauxhall executive Victoria Hatfield joins the Fiat team as marketing director
She was recently Vauxhall's head of communications
and has been with Stellantis since joining as a graduate trainee
Hatfield and Heilbron both now reporting to Fiat and Abarth UK managing director Giuseppe Cava (pictured)
Stellantis said the nhe new management structure will support the 2025 launch of new models to the Fiat range including the Grande Panda and Topolino and the Abarth 600e
In the past decade the Fiat network has become largely multi-franchised
typically sharing sites with other Stellantis brands
as its low market share and limited new car range left the brand struggling for viability in the challenging UK new car market
Cava said: "With a number of new models launching this year
it’s an exciting time for Fiat and important that we strengthen our commercial teams to maximise the opportunities; the appointment of Vicky and Neil will be key to this
supporting them and ensuring we deliver the highest levels of customer experience."

Cathryn Carson is professor of history of science
past director of the Office for History of Science and Technology and chair of the Department of History at the University of California
John Heilbron’s intellectual rigour transformed how scholars approach the history of science
scientific ideas and institutions was his domain
ranging from early modern European astronomy to the revolution of twentieth-century physics
Heilbron was known for his razor-sharp analysis and perceptive discernment of human frailties and strengths
Heilbron understood institutions and how they channelled and sustained a scientist’s work
a 1990 book he wrote with fellow science historian Robert W
he laid bare the world of physicist Ernest Lawrence
the inventor of the ‘cyclotron’ particle accelerator whose work led to the setting up of National Laboratories in Berkeley and Livermore
By putting discussions of nuclear science and radioisotopes cheek by jowl with descriptions of the building and financing of institutions
the book set the stage for similar histories in other areas of ‘big science’
The path to the quantum atom
And Heilbron’s 1999 study The Sun in the Church discussed how
from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century
the Catholic church sought to resolve astronomical questions regarding solar motion using meridian lines laid into cathedral floors
Turning the narrative of hostility between religion and science on its head
Heilbron built an empirical case for how church clerics had contributed to the triumph of heliocentric theory
in 1934 and he studied at the University of California
He did undergraduate and master’s degrees in physics in the heady time after the Second World War
before switching to the history of physics for his PhD
Heilbron studied at Berkeley with Thomas S
whose work at the intersection of history and the philosophy of science introduced the world to the concepts of ‘scientific revolutions’ and ‘paradigm shifts’
Kuhn also underscored the crucial role of the scientific community as the arbiter of how well a theory fits the real world
The student took seriously the teacher’s demand that scholars consider the history of science as it really happened
rather than favouring the smoothed-out narratives that retrospection might bring
But Heilbron didn’t follow Kuhn’s philosophical tack
because he considered history to be hard enough without engaging in abstract arguments about how science works
Heilbron’s early work examined the theory of atomic structure in the decades around 1900
he trawled through published papers that led to the model of the atom proposed by Danish physicist Niels Bohr and gathered archives and testimonies from the founding generation of quantum physicists
The field of quantum physics and the transformation of scientific institutions that occurred on the cusp of the twentieth century were ripe for study
He also studied Europe’s early modern period (1450–1789)
focusing on theories of electricity and natural philosophy
And he pursued broad questions in the physical sciences
including ideas and societal impacts that emerged from the field across centuries

Correction 07 February 2024: An earlier version of the headline for this Obituary erroneously referred to Heilbron as a historian of ‘big science’

Home > News > New head of sales at Fiat as Italian brand shakes-up UK leadership team

Fiat has announced a shake-up of its UK top team as the brand looks to implement a ‘growth phase’ of its dealer network
The Italian outfit has today (Mar 10) confirmed the appointments of Victoria Hatfield to lead its marketing operation and Neil Heilbron as head of an expanded sales team
The appointment of Heilbron in particularly could have a major impact on the brand’s dealers as the new man looks to ‘service the needs of a growing customer base’
The experienced figure has been with Stellantis since 2010 and moves over from his previous role as head of regional operations for Fiat
He will now oversee an expansion in Fiat’s UK dealer network which currently sits at around 90 sites
Both of the new appointments will report directly to Fiat’s new UK CEO
Cava said of the new appointments: ‘With a number of new models launching this year
it’s an exciting time for FIAT and important that we strengthen our commercial teams to maximise the opportunities; the appointment of Vicky and Neil will be key to this
‘I am committed to ensuring our commercial teams
supporting them and ensuring we deliver the highest levels of customer experience.”

CEO of fintech firm Capital Connect suggests that agile
inventive retailers view the ecommerce boom in South Africa - which exceeded R55bn in 2022 - as a business expansion opportunity
He emphasises that progressive retailers are contemplating strategies to secure a portion of the rapidly expanding ecommerce market
while leveraging their local community presence as a competitive edge
will outmanoeuvre their competitors and prosper in a rapidly evolving market
Heilbron points out intriguing market dynamics, citing research by World Wide Worx that reveals a post-pandemic surge in online grocery and clothing shopping
This marks a significant shift from a time when consumer electronics were the mainstay of the ecommerce sector
retailers are facing growing competition from global players
with Amazon expected to formally enter the market in 2024 and drop-shipping companies like Shein showing massive growth
while the market has speculated about Amazon’s plans for South Africa
Shein has quietly and rapidly built a massive presence in the apparel market
Shein is consistently among the top smartphone app downloads in South Africa, alongside social media apps like TikTok. According to a Marketing All Product Survey (MAPS) survey
around 250,000 South Africans are already shopping on Shein
Amazon has not yet publicly discussed its plans for direct sales to the South African public
confirmed that it will be bringing its marketplace to South Africa to “provide independent sellers throughout the country an opportunity to rapidly launch
grow and scale their businesses while leveraging the innovative capabilities provided by Amazon”
“These trends show that the market is evolving and becoming more competitive
But it’s not necessarily bad news for SME retailers,” says Heilbron
“It’s also an opportunity for them to grow by exploring new channels to market
Those that can be agile in every aspect of their business model
from their pricing through to their product range
Heilbron says that the Amazon effect has forced retailers worldwide to up their game
Retailers should understand and press on their competitive advantage
that will be their local point of presence and their ability to offer personalised
face-to-face in-store experiences that ecommerce stores can’t replicate
and expert customer advice are all great ways to attract customers into a shop
Putting a coffee shop with good Wi-Fi in place is another excellent way to bring more business through the door
Another idea is to use formats like shipping containers to create pop-up stores that can be deployed at events
Retailers that want to win ecommerce business will need to ensure their online platforms and logistics are up to scratch
some might find Amazon to be an ally rather than a competitor
The Amazon marketplace offers them another online storefront and logistics partner to extend their reach
bringing competition to existing platforms like Takealot
Brick-and-mortar businesses that can integrate the digital and physical experience with options like collect in-store or browse in-store and order online could be the biggest winners
Heilbron says that retailers can access fintech growth capital to finance their competitive advantage
whether that will come from refurbishing their shop
building a mobile app or purchasing products in bulk for promotions and specials
“Fintech lenders offer growth capital with flexible and attractive terms,” he says
unsecured opportunity capital of up to R5m in 24 hours to ensure that they don’t lose out
They simply log into an app to click and borrow
and the funds will appear in their bank account by the next day
