Matthew Murray and Charles Raw ran 1 250km over 35 days to help a KZN school and raised R600 000 in the process
The money they raised from the ‘Running Wild’ campaign will help improve the conditions at Velakukhanya Primary School based in Northern KwaZulu-Natal’s KwaNgwenya community
It is the only primary school serving the educational needs of the more than 2 500 children who call this community
The primary feeder creche for Velakukhanya Primary School
which is also supported by Wild Impact and donors in the region
Velakukhanya Primary School is an active participant in Wild Impact’s Echo Environmental Education programme
through which it has conducted over 3 000 environmental education lessons and given 772 pupil the chance to go on game drives in the iSimangaliso area
The school currently has 458 pupils from grade R to grade seven and 13 teachers
“We visited there the other day and they have 70 learners per classroom and their admin block is falling apart
There are up to 70 pupils in a class at the school
“Their kitchen is out in a room without a roof and like a pot to cook with,” Murray said
“They have very poor conditions but they are making the most of it
In essence we are hoping to build two classroom blocks and upscale the admin block.”
Friends since they met in grade two at Howick Preparatory School
will be relying heavily on each other as they tackle ‘a marathon a day’ as part of a fundraising initiative to help this impoverished school
Starting on February 1 in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape
they planned to cover a total of 1 250km over 35 days – roughly 40km a day
which is just a few kilometres less than a standard marathon
before heading inland and finishing at Beau Constantia in the Western Cape winelands
They are very grateful for the help which has been provided by running coach
a nutritionist and a podiatrist who has been helping with preparations
On the road they will be supported by Raw’s brother
Asked how they coped with the mental aspects of the challenge
You’ve got to go into these things with the mentality that it’s got to happen

Large areas around Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands are still without electricity
six days after heavy snow and rain caused extensive disruptions in the province
With more inclement weather expected along the Drakensberg from this Friday
the Border Management Agency has announced that the popular Sani Pass has been closed until further notice
The provincial Cooperative Governance Department has also warned travelers that melting snow may cause local flooding in the lower reaches of the Tugela River
Eskom in KwaZulu-Natal says in a statement many of the outages have been dealt with
and that they are working around the clock to return the situation to normal
Umngeni ward councillor Hazel Lake is concerned that small businesses around Howick cannot trade due to the power outage
“Following the snowfall on Friday night
since then until now various areas still have no electricity and there are a number of tourists and restaurants which are unable to trade because there is no power and we have appealed to Eskom over and over again,” Lake explains
adding that “Bookings and weddings were cancelled and a lot of booking accommodations were cancelled but the problem is continuing because of the lack of power.”
South Africa (11 February 2025) — The Love Howick team were delighted to have many pairs of helping hands assisting their recent beautification effort in the small town recently
valuable time was spent giving different pockets of the area a little extra love
and make provisions for the future; the efforts stretched from taking care of water bodies to helping new flora grow
ultimately leaving every place better off than when they arrived
The learners and Love Howick’s efforts saw them undertake different projects: removing litter plaguing the Umgeni River
sorting waste at the Recycling Depot and getting to flex their green thumbs by planting flowers in the Love Howick park as well as seedlings in the community organisation’s vegetable garden
Their efforts also extended to beautifying the Howick Clinic
A community-driven organisation focused on long-lasting change in the town of Howick
the team’s many missions to better the area are for people as much as they are driven by people
is a fabulous means to future-proof an ethos of active citizenship and create a Howick and perhaps a South Africa in which young people know that change starts when action does
Meanwhile, in other good news made possible by the youth, the first urban forest in Cape Town is absolutely thriving! Located in Bo-Kaap, this tiny forest was nurtured by classes of school children, each of whom played a role in making a green space for all to enjoy. You can read all about this effort here.

South Africa (21 November 2024) — Learners at Howick High School recently put their woodworking skills to the test and passed with flying colours
An initiative led by the high school’s Community Club, the idea was to marry practical skills to purpose. As such, the club learners were hard at work building fine kennels that were donated to Funda Nenja; an NGO based in the Midlands’ Mphophomeni township
Funda Nenja is a dog training initiative making a serious different in the realm of animal welfare
Their lessons help children and older community members learn essential skills for efficient pet care; furthering animal education and fostering a deeper connection to animals in their area
they help animals with other important measures of care
the Howick High learners were able to gift Funda Nenja three kennels
It was a welcomed offering for the Funda Nenja team
which shared that this kind of support helps them improve the lives of Mpophomeni dogs
some of the learners are said to have not only gifted their time
but additional materials out of pocket to ensure that the kennels would be top quality
These kennels will now provide dog-owners in the area a safe and comfortable shelter for their animals

The actor and writer spoke to RadioTimes.com
Ghosts star Jim Howick has addressed rumours of a feature film version of the beloved BBC sitcom
revealing that the creators have \"talked about\" such a project – but nothing is in the works just yet
Ghosts wrapped up a little over a year ago, on Christmas Day 2023, but hopes for a revival have persisted, with the Daily Star (via Chortle) claiming in January of this year that a feature film would start shooting \"within months\"
Alas, that report has been debunked by the passage of time and by producer Alison Carpenter, who told us in January that she would \"love nothing more than to return to Button House and the Ghosts
In a new update, Howick recalled: \"We all read that article
We shared the article around and actually had a good laugh
\"We get together at least once a month and discuss future projects
a Ghosts film was certainly something that we've talked about in the past
Quizzed by RadioTimes.com on the endless possibilities of such a project
Howick said that one \"obvious\" step would be to increase the scale of the story enough to befit a cinema screen
He explained: \"If there was a film happening
We would have to consider different levels of production value and everything else
That's what happened even with The Simpsons and all the [other] film versions of sitcoms
we'd have to come up with a story first!\"
while dreams of a Ghosts film are by no means dashed
fans certainly shouldn't expect to see one in the near future
potential concept in the minds of the show's creators
The thing about Ghosts is that we filmed it between January and March
because it was the time of the year where we could get the house before it had to be restored [for] all the events that they have there
was that it was such a lovely time to film because it was such a bleak time of the year
And to be spending that time with your friends and having the most fun was an absolute boon.\"

The actor, who currently stars in BBC One's Here We Go and Channel 4's The Change

\"I was just having a routine checkup,\" he recalled in an interview with RadioTimes.com
\"I had a mole removed and I was having a post-operation checkup
and my dermatologist noticed a sort of small blemish as I was leaving

\"It was thankfully a very early stage of skin cancer,\" continued Howick
The news came as a total shock to the comedy star
having never been especially irresponsible with his sun intake
but he has since been even more cautious when stepping out on bright days or holidaying anywhere hot
\"I walk my dogs every morning [and] I'm very conscious now
to apply 50-plus sunscreen and remain like Morticia Addams for the rest of my days,\" he joked
Howick added: \"I was more than happy to get involved
and it felt like it was something I couldn't say no to.\"

It was a memorable and fitting silence as Howickians stood quietly reflecting on what New Zealand’s courageous Defence Force personnel have done in the line of military service for this nation over more than a century
The respectful moment was just after Howick RSA president Barry Dreyer had recited the Ode of Remembrance at the cenotaph on Stockade Hill and before Matthew Verrill
there was a stilled hush in the crisp morning air
not a sound from the few thousand people gathered for Howick’s ANZAC Day dawn service at 6am
Australia and the United Kingdom fluttered in the gentle easterly breeze
After the veterans and present Defence Force personnel marched onto the stockade in time with the beating drum – the only thing that could be heard along with marching feet – Dreyer made his opening address
and this year marks 80 years since the end of World War II
and Dreyer told the crowd that every dawn service since 1916 “has followed the same procedure”
The history of the dawn service “was developed for next of kin to replicate a burial in the [battle] field” of services’ people who had died in war conflicts and in the line of duty
Dreyer also recounted the history of ANZAC (Australian New Zealand Army Corps)
its origins from the ill-fated April 1915 World War I British-led campaign at Gallipoli
on land “about the size of the Bucklands Beach Peninsula” where New Zealand suffered “80 per cent battle casualties” to the brave men who landed on those Mediterranean beaches and were met with fierce resistance from the equally courageous Ottomans
also referenced the other participant nations whose troops also fought at Gallipoli alongside the British – Australia
A highlight of this morning’s dawn service was the confident and detailed speech made by Kaesar Wu
the young year 8 student of Bucklands Beach Intermediate School and winner of this year’s Howick RSA ANZAC Day essay/poetry competition
Kaesar spoke of ANZAC soldiers’ bravery entering a theatre of war that they knew “every step might be your last”
and that the ANZAC spirit is defined by “bravery
perseverance and selflessness” as “their resolve never wavered”
also talked of two former Howick men who had served and lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars respectively – Ernest Caddigan and Lynden Brassey
whose names are on the plaques on the cenotaph
wreaths were laid on the cenotaph by Dreyer and Howick Local Board chair Damian Light
prayers were led by Reverend Raniera Bassett
Howick RSA executive committee member and veteran Dean Clisby fittingly read the ANZAC Day dedication:
Anzac received its baptism of fire and became one of the immortal names in history
think of the comrades who went out with us to battle but did not return
“Let us therefore once more dedicate ourselves to the service of the ideals for which they died
“As the dawn is now about to pierce the night
so let their memory inspire us to work the coming of the new light into the dark places of the world
To which the Howick crowd replied: “We will remember them.”
The cycle three performing arts students at Howick Elementary School put on their bilingual interpretation of The Sound of Music before a proud and very appreciative audience on April 3
inspirational story of the Vonn Trapp Family Singers is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year
brought the show – which included all 11 classic musical numbers – to life in just three months
What were your initial thoughts when you read the scripts for series two
I was initially quite pleased because it seemed like my part had got bigger [laughs]
The Verderer takes on a main antagonist role
and he represents the misogynist pushback against everything that's been riled up in the village.
How do you find his human side as an actor
and what draws you to play him? It's a very different part from what I usually play and that's what attracted me to the part in the first place
easy-going characters and this guy is a very angry and bitter man
He needs a friendship group as his worldview is adjusted by his loneliness and his isolation in the world
He's very angry and reactionary and that's his role in the show; pushing back against anything that he considers to be an attack on his traditional values meanwhile desperately trying to hold on to whatever it is that that makes those values worthwhile.
Why do you think it’s important to have a character like The Verderer in the story with his particular views? What Bridget does so well
is that he represents a certain view that is loud at the moment and it's frighteningly becoming more powerful in the world
He represents a reactionary and illogical viewpoint and is essentially a human block to any kind of forward-thinking enterprise in the world
How is The Verderer different from other roles you’ve played
and what do you enjoy about portraying him
it’s fun to play someone who is angry and a bit despicable; those are the most delicious parts because it takes you out of your comfort zone
This character is a fool who likes the sound of his own voice and gets riled up really easily
He doesn't realise that he's the court jester of the piece because he's so trumped up and he's got such an ego and such an image complex
He believes that he's got a loyal bunch of cheerleaders behind him and unity with the men of the town but what he quickly learns is that there's only so far you can take it before humanity steps in
It's a testament to Bridget's incredible writing
and it be a disservice not to go deep into the serious themes of the show however
there's a lot of fun to be had and there is a lot of silliness and what Bridget does so well is earn that silliness
That’s something that the masters of their craft do and it’s an absolute pleasure to play.
Series two delves into the witchcraft theme
How much did you know about the history of witch trials before filming series two
I knew a fair bit from my time on Horrible Histories and Ghosts
I think The Verderer probably would have loved to exist at that time or maybe it would have changed his worldview; maybe he would have realized just how horrific that was
Is there anything about The Verderer’s character that you wish you could embrace more in real life
maybe I do like his interest and the time he takes to appreciate nature
There are some positive aspects to this character
there are chinks of light and I feel there are moments in the show where The Verderer shares a common ground with everyone else
And that just highlights how futile the bickering and the misogyny is
I walk my dogs and I go to the beach so I am present in that respect so there’s nothing of The Verderer’s character that I would embrace
What’s been your favourite scene to film this series
The standout scene for me to film was the scene where we were about to go on a ‘mob’ march to the Eel Café
It was a scene filmed in the radio cafe with all the men of the town
It was an absolute joy and a pleasure to work with Mackenzie Crook as a director
He created such an enormous sense of calm on set and an incredibly collaborative environment for everyone
He really encouraged freedom in this scene
and the whole shoot actually was really fun
I love working on a second series because you know the show has had kind reviews and people have been kind about the show and enjoy the show
It frees you and you’re able to push on.
If you could give The Verderer any advice for series two
he's depressed and he's lonely so the advice I would say to him is
You don't need to shield your vulnerability with fear and hatred.”

Two male thieves are understood to have stolen tobacco products and what’s believed to be an amount of cash from the BP fuel station on Ridge Road in Howick this morning.
The Times visited the popular service station this Saturday afternoon and staff were friendly but reluctant to talk in detail about the incident, because it happened on a morning shift that other colleagues had been working on.
The BP Ridge Road was open for business and trading as usual on Saturday afternoon, with people coming and going making their purchases.
Some customers asked how the staff were and offered their sympathies for what had happened earlier in the day before sunrise.
Counties Manukau Police have told the Times: “Police are making enquiries following a report of a robbery at a commercial premises on Ridge Road Howick, reported at around 6.15am.
They add: “Enquiries are underway to determine the circumstances of the incident and to locate the offender.”
BP Ridge Road staff told the Times on Saturday afternoon that two thieves were involved in the incident, with one jumping over the serving counter.
It’s understood they opened the locked tobacco cabinet and emptied it of its contents, and a locked cash box was also taken.
The Times has attempted to contact the owners of the business and is awaiting a response.
No need for breakfast on Saturday because there’ll be a substantial banquet of delicious eats to tantalise the taste buds at the Howick Village Cultural Food Festival.
One of the Howick Village Association’s large outdoor-oriented summer events, the Village comes alive on March 1 as Picton Street will be closed to traffic and well and truly open to food trucks and vendors, in the street and through the Howick Village Market, for people to enjoy their culinary delights.
Being a food-themed event, all the many eateries in Howick Village will also be open offering their high-quality cuisine, as well as the other retail stores.
Howick Village Association manager Katie Treneman says the third annual Cultural Food Festival has a large and diverse programme of entertainment.
The main performance stage will have East FM DJ Phil Dark as the MC, with acts starting from 9am.
All up, there are 12 displays on the programme including seven dance groups that vary from dragon, lion and belly to Move Dance Group’s Moulin Rouge, Texas Dance, and Bollywood routines.
Wakaaranga School’s kapa haka group are also performing, along with bagpipers, and a set of songs by accomplished musician Sarah van Zyl.
“We’re excited to be bringing you the Siva Afi fire dancers for the first time and they’re due to perform at 11am,” says Treneman.
“We have a dedicated family area set aside in Fencible Walk with child friendly eateries and old-fashioned games.
“The highlight is always the Great Goblet Race at midday down the Picton Street hill through the crowds.
“Let’s see if Tyler from Urban In East can retain his crown of two years. He’s up for some stiff competition from some new business entrants.
“We’re grateful to the Ministry of Ethnic Affairs’ Development Fund and the Howick Local Board for their support of this event,” says Treneman.

the exciting new development right at the heart of the village
Construction is going great guns and things are ticking along nicely
The project is being managed and constructed by D3’s sister company
and building is expected to be complete around late June of next year
“We’re fully funded to get the job done and we’ve got our own in-house construction team motoring along – it’s all happening at this amazing location,” says Illingworth
He’s excited that members of the community and prospective buyers are now able to see the significant progress that’s being made
“You’re in the ground for so long putting in drainage and pouring slabs
now the framing has gone up and we have a roof on the courtyard block
Located on a north-facing corner site in the eastern village
Oaken Residences is made up of 31 townhouses that come in two-to-three bedroom options
Inspired architectural design by award-winning Leuschke Group Architects promises the ultimate in easy
“We’ve got quite an array of different layouts to suit people’s unique need and wants,” says Illingworth
all have internal garaging and only nine are left which have their own personal lift (17 total on-site have lifts)
While some people have said they don’t need one
others are planning to use it to bring their groceries up from the garage.”
The demographics they have seen in buyers to date are typically young professionals all the way to downsizers from the community that aren’t quite ready for a retirement home
The roof has gone up on one of the blocks at Oaken Residences
Each townhouse has its own deck or courtyard
plus a central courtyard where residents can meet and mingle
“They like the freehold title and they know that if they need to sell it
and don’t have to give any money back as is the case with a retirement home
They’re gearing up for an easy lifestyle and are really excited to enjoy the benefits of a brand new
lock-and leave home in the suburb they love.”
Oaken Residence’s design has been inspired by the old-English architecture the area is renowned for
as well as the village itself and the people who live there
I’m actually a Howick boy and grew up out that way so understand it well
It’s one of Auckland’s more traditional villages
so we were trying to capture that,” he says
“It’s a very strong community – I don’t think people want to up sticks and move too far away
It all aligns and they are getting a lot of local buyers
so it’s good to see that approach has proven itself.”
Illingworth says that the durable brick facades not only look great
In the spirit of classic Kiwi indoor outdoor living
each townhouse has its own deck or courtyard
which will hopefully end up a social hub for residents
The 31 townhouses come in two-to-three bedroom options and promise easy
D3 Development director Scott Illingworth says: “Of the 17 that are still for sale
all have internal garaging and only nine are left which have their own personal lift.”
have said that everyone who has purchased is like-minded and great to deal with
so it feels like the community is already taking shape,” he says
“The progress and obvious quality and design have inspired a flurry of recent interest and activity
I’m currently writing up a contract for the project manager’s grandmother – Liam is working on-site running the project for C3 Construction
We caught up with her last week and it suits her
with family nearby and built by her grandson
“It’s a great story and testament to the development – we’re proud that our family have their faith in us
We do try to create projects that we can drive past forever and be proud of.”
Cherie and Lisa had just returned from a 90-minute site visit when they spoke to OneRoof
“We thought we’d be there 30 minutes but there’s just so much to soak in, we love it and are very proud to have the responsibility of selling the Oaken properties,” says Cherie
the windows are there going in and the roof is on some of them
We’re very surprised at how spacious the homes are and also very pleasantly surprised at how wide the driveways are
It’s got a really good feel – high quality and classy
