The Mbashe Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape has urged motorists to drive with caution on the N2 through Dutywa
A service delivery protest blocked traffic for most of the morning
Residents of informal settlements are alleged to be demanding permanent housing
The municipality mayor Samkelo Janda says they will continue to engage with the residents
“I want to caution our motorists that they must drive carefully as they pass through the town because the town is open
And it is under close monitoring by the South African Police Services and also through their unit
a devastating head-on collision on the N2 highway near Dutywa in the Eastern Cape claimed 11 lives and left three others seriously injured
The accident involved a minibus taxi and a bakkie carrying four passengers
Among the deceased were four men and four women traveling in the taxi
and three of the four passengers in the bakkie
The collision occurred at around 8 PM on a stretch of the N2 notorious for its high accident rate
According to provincial transport spokesperson
the accident highlights the dangers of this stretch of road between Kei Bridge and Mthatha
“It’s really disheartening constantly getting on the airways and reporting about so many people dying in accidents
particularly on this part of the N2,” Binqose said
The minibus taxi was carrying 10 passengers
The victims included four men and four women
sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital
Preliminary investigations suggest that human error
potentially involving overtaking or poor judgment
Both vehicles have been towed to a police station for further examination to determine their mechanical conditions at the time of the incident
“This stretch of road is well-maintained and as straight as a ruler
so accidents like these often point to errors in judgment by drivers
Head-on collisions are almost always due to driver decisions
such as overtaking at the wrong time or straying into oncoming traffic.”
Crash investigators are also examining other factors
including the state of the vehicles and whether either driver was fatigued or distracted
Last night’s collision is the latest in a series of tragic accidents on the N2
one of South Africa’s most dangerous highways:
• December 2023: Eight people lost their lives in a head-on collision between a Toyota Fortuner and a Ford Kuga near Dutywa
• October 2024: Seven people were killed when a truck collided with two minibus taxis between Mthatha and Mtentu
The truck driver fled the scene but was later apprehended
• August 2024: Six people were killed in two separate collisions on the N2 near Mthatha
including one involving a sedan and a taxi
The stretch of the N2 between Kei Bridge and Mthatha has been flagged as one of the deadliest roads in South Africa due to the frequency of fatal head-on collisions
Eastern Cape authorities have renewed their calls for stricter adherence to road safety rules following the crash
Binqose urged motorists to exercise caution and make sound decisions while driving:
“We appeal to all road users to drive responsibly
The majority of accidents in our province are due to poor judgment by drivers
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving.”
Law enforcement has stepped up patrols on the N2
while local municipalities are considering additional road safety interventions
including better signage and public awareness campaigns
