“Santam has been a significant shareholder since Indwe’s inception
This transaction cements the relationship and enables us to create a stronger presence in the industry
It also highlights their ongoing confidence in the business,” says Peter Olyott
A second development at the business is the formation of Simah Risk Holdings
created by moving the large corporate and specialist offerings out of Indwe
This business will be owned by ARC Financial Services Investments and management
“The past two years have taught us as individuals and as a business that you have to be adaptable in the face of change
Change is necessary because it facilitates growth
We’re excited about these new developments

who will continue to receive the same expert risk advice and personal service that they know and trust,” says Olyott

We take a look at the growing complexity of the insurance realm and speak to Peter Olyott
about the company’s recent developments in South Africa
“Whilst we have built our business on the traditional broking strengths of technical knowledge and subject matter expertise and proficiency
we embrace and lead change in our sector.”
Peter Olyott has been involved in the insurance sector since 1981, where he started his career as a trainee underwriter with what was formerly the Mutual and Federal Insurance Company in Johannesburg. Today, he is CEO of Indwe Risk Services (Indwe)
South Africa’s leading short-term broker for personal
Standing as a full-service advisory and intermediary business
Indwe’s clients range from individuals and groups through to small
The company is primarily located in South Africa
and Indwe is represented in both physical and virtual branches spanning 25 offices across the country
through the company’s Allied Africa Broker Network
it can provide products and services through its partners in over 16 African countries
and employs around 400 people directly within the business
“We are able to offer solutions from non-life
and employee benefits through our Indwe BlueStar business in association with Sanlam,” Olyott informs us
“From the use of technology to improve our risk management offerings
to partnering with specialists to bring our individual clients technology-based solutions for their personal insurance requirements
we are big enough to matter and small enough to care
and we instil a desire to continue to learn and improve throughout our business.”
South Africa is proving to be a difficult space to operate within at present
COVID-19 has both impacted the national economy and the company in various ways
I believe that COVID-19 and the lockdowns have propelled us into the future far quicker than we had planned
and we now have a combination of virtual offices – replacing some of our brick-and-mortar offices around the country – and some hybrid offices,” Olyott explains
we have been able to transition from a traditional location-based brokerage to a virtual nationwide operation with all of our services delivered remotely during the first few months of the most serious initial lockdowns
but also a lot smarter in terms of the way we operate
There are industries whose mature status was exacerbated by COVID-19 and others whose new status has been accelerated by the pandemic
our business has had to adapt to ensure that we are geared for a changing world.”
both the life and non-life sector have been severely impacted by COVID-19 in terms of claims for death and disability on the one hand and contingent business interruption on the other
“A plethora of lawsuits dealing with the interpretation of cover have been needed to ensure legal certainty
but obviously did not win any plaudits from consumers who saw this as another attempt by the industry to avoid its obligations,” he says
we have some industry brand rebuilding to undertake.”
“It is amazing when you do not have a choice
Insurance is undoubtedly a complex and detailed business
it requires marrying the knowledge and understanding of a client’s lifestyle or business with specific knowledge and expertise of the products and services Indwe provides
A core part of this adaptation in an ever-changing industry is keeping up with the latest business developments
“Indwe has been busy with its digitalisation strategy for some time
beginning with the consolidation of and access to all client information,” Olyott says
“Then we have developed some internal tools to assist our advisors in the complex process of reviewing our clients’ risk and insurance needs
These tools allow us to talk to clients across the risk spectrum
“The tools also allow us to record the information and to start the process of benchmarking certain covered policy limits across our client base
further enabling our advisors to provide high quality advice to our clients.”
When it comes to the field of personal insurance
a technology company that supports Indwe’s Blupixl™
a digital advice option aimed at individual clients
we believe all providers will need to provide clients with choices of convenience in terms of how our clients choose to deal with us,” Olyott comments
And on the complex and corporate risk side
Indwe has embraced the use of drone technology to improve the quality of both data and risk analysis of larger and more complex risks
we improve our use of it and also find additional applications for such tools
helping us to further improve our advice and information offerings to our clients,” Olyott continues
“The COVID-19 pandemic has probably positively influenced the development and refinement of these digital tools quicker than if it had not happened
it is amazing when you do not have a choice
“We believe in true partnerships with our business partners
and we treat them fairly and with respect”
As the world becomes an infinitely more complex place due to the necessity of environmental consideration
today’s risk and insurance advisors need to continually improve their knowledge of pertinent subjects ranging from climate change to cybercrime
Indwe’s key priorities for the rest of 2021 and beyond remain focused on adapting to such necessities
as well as looking after clients’ risk and insurance interests through the application of sound advice
and appropriate cost-effective financial solutions; this is set at the core of the company
“We are seeking to expand in our chosen sectors where we have already built up some critical mass
and we are looking to continue to build on our internationally linked business where we have enjoyed good success over the past three years in particular,” Olyott concludes
continues to grow from strength to strength and we now look after more than 120 independent brokers in South Africa with a variety of product offerings and services that keep us ahead of the competition in the sector.”

Opposite Wits University on the Braamfontein Ridge where the legendary SA Breweries building is located
the new park – designed by architect Edmund Batley – is a gateway from the northern suburbs to the city centre
the Diamond Building and the Eland sculpture are orientation points
The entrance to the Liberty offices has become a grand porte-cochère and drop-off arrangement
“lei water” channels with rushing water and tranquil reflective pools all echo the healing spirit of the site
which evolved over several years was loosely termed the “Beacon Project”
as in “a beacon of hope” by the team of experts involved
He approached professionals who knew the city
and had relevant experience to help him realise the vision of a city park: James Delaney
who reimagined The Wilds; the doyen of indigenous gardening
Patrick Watson; lighting designer Paul Pamboukian; art facilitation company Moja Nation; sustainability consultant and co-founder of PaperThinkLAB
Thulani Kuzwayo; as well as water features expert Pawel Gradowski
“Every construction or architectural process is massively collaborative” says Batley
“What happened on ‘beacon’ though was highly unusual because Covid contributed significantly to the outcome.”
James Delaney brought important insights from his experience at The Wilds about how to reclaim the carpark and turn it into a place of healing
Spaza wellness mosaic; artwork was designed by artist and community activist Andrew Lindsay
A vast 6m mosaic compass at the park will be one of the first things visitors see. The artwork was designed by artist and community activist Andrew Lindsay and was completed by his Spaza Gallery team after he suddenly passed away in October 2021. advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
“It took a while to figure out the scope of the job after Drew died,” Spaza team leader Dionne McDonald explains
“We are working with his original design but I don’t have his colour reference
He always worked in black and white and we worked in the colours as we were going along
there is no way that he can’t be present in the work that we do
His voice is in our ears and sometimes I will even say to the crew: Drew is so proud of you for that piece
because I can see that this is something he would like.”
Lindsay had said that working on the design had made him think about how little attention we pay to nature and to where and how we walk
He wanted people to discover elements of the design
adding: “It is also about teaching people to be aware of their environment.”
At least six other artworks by better-known and emerging artists feature in the park – works by Rirhandzu Makhubele, Zanele Montle, Grace Mokalapa, Pat Mautloa, Hannelie Coezee and James Delaney. “Artists have come up with an idea for each location that we designated,” Batley explains. advertisementDon't want to see this? MojaNation creative visualist Farai Mafurirano says the aim was to enhance a sense of wellness by engaging with the artworks at a spiritual
Kuzwayo explains that a “Net Zero” tool was used to calculate whether developments to the site are positive for ecology
It is not about repairing previous ecological damage but taking steps to improve the site by
planting more indigenous plants and prioritising permeable surfaces over hardscaping
In discussions with Batley and the design team, Kuzwayo promoted a biophilic framework (an approach to design that focuses on improving our “connectivity to the natural environment”)
selected plants based on his experience of the 30-acre Hollard Arcadia Campus garden in Parktown
I say: I will put a tree here that will seed itself down the hill.”
Watson is doing all the planting while James Delaney selected the medicinal plants
so it is this surreal thing where you have got wildness in an urban setting
It is the veld in central Johannesburg and it is about contrast
there are no hedges and things like that… and there are stone walls so you have a sense of country and history
About 80% of the plants will be indigenous to the Highveld and the rest will be exotic plants from all over the world
“Just to use wild in Braamfontein would be a bit too radical,” he says
The part of the garden that is natural to Braamfontein will bring the butterflies back
“It is like bringing artistic wild into an urban setting and I think that is quite nice
They have lots of art and it will work as a sculpture park.” Grasses will include indigenous and ornamental varieties
“I think that will be quite a nice soft spot
especially since it is quite masculine with hard walls and buildings.”
the property slopes up to the ridge and down on the other side
“We are exposing rocks that are of geological interest,” says Watson
“They are soldered shales that are part of the Witwatersrand system
The rocks on the Helpmekaar side go to the Indian Ocean and the ones on the other side go to the Atlantic
That’s not all: Yellowwood trees planted in the Breweries garden 60 years ago are still there
Wild grasses and 120 stinkwood trees are being planted
and nine additional wild fig trees have been planted in the front of the building
The original idea was to design a new porte-cochère and to make the historic SAB building accessible to Wits students as part of an entrepreneurs’ ideas initiative
“From Patrick’s indigenous plants to our spine and meandering walkways
to James’s ‘earthing mound’ and stepping stones
to Pawel’s tranquil water features and Paul’s experiential lighting
very good team collaboration experience,” Batley says
“How do you make something relevant to people who live in the city and also attract people who live further away in the suburbs
You have got to make a green space not only beautiful and attractive
but also relevant and engaging so it draws people and makes them come back over and over again,” says Delaney
He adds: “We have worked with the theme of healing so it will not only be a beautiful landscape to walk through and a nice place to go for a picnic
but there will be much greater depth to the story
Healing is about how plants and landscape can help body and mind too… it is about the smells
the textures and even medicinal qualities of many plants; it’s about meditation spaces
and it is about going to a place where you can relax
These are all aspects of holistic healing.”
He believes the park has the potential to attract thousands of people and that its strategic location will also be attractive to tourists
which are part of the gold-bearing reef upon which the city is built.”
He also hopes that the Braamfontein park will be a safe space for all to enjoy: “We are taking quite a progressive approach
it will stay open till late at night and will be well lit
and there will be security and cameras and visible security
theatrical lighting nuanced for day and night
created by lighting design expert Paul Pamboukian
will be used for sculptures and special features
“The porte-cochère will probably be quite an exciting element that really welcomes one in and sets the scene,” he said
the park will evolve to include bicycle racks

The Competition Tribunal this month published the conditions it has attached to Santam’s acquisition of Indwe Broker Holdings (Pty) Ltd
In what amounts to a game of musical shares
has bought the 76% of Indwe it did not already own: the 51% shareholding of African Rainbow Capital Financial Services (Pty) Ltd and the 25% shareholding of Sanlam Life Insurance Limited
The share purchases take Swanvest’s (read: Santam’s) stake in Indwe from 24% to 100%
Patrice Motsepe’s Ubuntu-Botho Investments
Indwe has moved its corporate and specialist business
which is owned by ARC Financial Services and management
whose respective shareholdings have not been disclosed
The conditions of the Indwe/Swanvest merger are that Santam will spend at least R6.6 million over the next three years so that Indwe can hire
Indwe will also provide the brokers with office and infrastructure support for three years
This benefit is valued at R10 000 per broker per month (or R1.2m a year)

In July 2018 Emalahleni Local Municipality gave MBS Civils JV Cudjor Quantity Surveying CC an R11-million tender to rehabilitate the sportsfield and build a stadium in Indwe, near Nomzamo township, not far from Khowa (formerly Elliot) in the Eastern Cape. But the construction company has abandoned the site.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
but workers hired by MBS Civils to build the stadium told GroundUp they only worked for a period of eight months and their contracts were terminated without any explanation
Emalahleni Local Municipality spokesperson Luthando Nqumkana said the construction company has refused to return to work
Nqumkana said there was a disagreement initially between the contractor and the municipality about work done
the hard Covid-19 lockdown was declared (in March 2020)
But even when the lockdown was sufficiently lifted
the construction company never returned to work
Nqumkana refused to give us contact details for the company or their suppliers
The company has no presence on the internet
We managed to track down a person who was said to be the contractor but we got no response
Luvuyo Limba, one of the workers, said, “We started working on-site on 26 October 2018. We were signed 18-months contracts but those contracts were terminated within eight months. We were told to leave the site because the municipality has no money to finish building the stadium. We did not even get our UIF money.’’advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
They expressed their disappointment at the failure to have the stadium built
Doors and corrugated iron sheets have been removed
The fence is damaged and parts have been stolen
said local rugby and netball teams have no sports ground they can use
We wanted to know from Emalahleni Local Municipality what its plan was to fix the stadium and how much of the R11-million had been spent
After another week of trying to get answers
Nqumkana said he had been struggling with network issues and was unable “to locate colleagues while working on the field”

hope the piloted coal mining in the area will change the lives of the impoverished communities
want a clear beneficiation policy that is in line with the mining charter
The government says coal mining will be a catalyst for economic growth and job creation in the area
The coal belt contains three small rural towns
Indigenous landowners started illegal mining enterprises at Indwe decades ago
They traded with raw coal on the black market
The residents say they want a coal mining company that recognises beneficiation and the history of coal mining in the area
“We have to know what is taking place now
we are not happy about this programme of mining
we need the municipality to come forward to us
not somebody else who is coming to run this programme without consulting the local people.”
these people came up with dams here and these dams are contaminated with chemicals
Our livestock is dying and these chemicals pose a danger to the communities around this mining
We want it to be protected from our livestock
Livestock drink from this contaminated dam.”
hopes the government will speed up the consultation process as they believe coal mining will change the face of eMalahleni
especially with supply for electricity supply or coal whatever
I still feel there is a future in this mine
They have been saying the coal is not of good quality but still
I still believe that there is a way to get this coal mining up and running and we need the people
we need the government to try and get this
We have not had job creation we need this for the local people
“Mining activities are regulated and there are quite a number of regulations that some include the consultation of communities so the reopening of that mine at Emalahleni will yield a number of spin-offs in terms of the economic spin-offs
The economic activities that may accrue will also change the face of Emalhaleni
the face of the district and indeed that may work to contribute to the economic fortunes of the Eastern Cape province.”
Consultation with the communities is currently taking place
Villagers want the government and the mining company to agree on how they will benefit from coal mining in the area
ARC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ubuntu-Botho Investment
and ARC’s directors include Mr Patrice Motsepe and Dr Johan van Zyl
The vision for ARC is to become a significant black-controlled financial services player in South Africa
This is the first joint investment involving Sanlam and ARC
“This is a hugely positive step for Indwe,” states Peter Olyott
“The involvement of ARC in Indwe is a significant vote of confidence in Indwe’s ability to play an important role in the future plans of ARC and the Sanlam Group.” The new direct association with Sanlam
also serves to enhance Indwe’s profile in the markets they currently serve
as well as new markets they are looking to become involved in
“Our clients can look forward to a wider range of products and services
while the broker community will benefit from increased participation of Indwe in the development
more sustainable base of black brokers and advisors,” concludes Olyott
Indwe Risk Services - passionate about our youth
and has for the past eight years partnered with INSETA to implement
among others a very successful internship programme
Indwe has absorbed 100% of the interns into the company
some of whom now work at other companies – an extraordinary achievement
Interns are able to apply skills and knowledge after completion of the internship in various fields of insurance
Indwe has also benefited from a gifted pool of former interns who are being trained in leadership programmes as part of succession planning
The interns have become trained mentees in specific professions and have skillful mentors who provide continuous learning as part of Indwe’s mentoring programme
Interns who completed the internship programme
enter the insurance industry with a full short term insurance qualification and RE 5 (regulatory examinations) that they achieve whilst on the programmes
Four former interns recently attended an Introductory Management Programme
Other interns are also permanently employed in the different business areas (Business Insurance/Individual Insurance/Specialist Risks
Indwe’s success with their internship programme
can largely be ascribed to their rigorous selection process to appoint interns
we look at leadership qualities during the recruitment of interns
demonstrate self-leadership which is a necessary condition for self-discipline and self-motivation and are more likely to work unsupervised.” Motau explains that Indwe recruits unemployed graduates for their internship programme and learners who have completed their matric for their learnership programmes
“We also look at interns/learners with disabilities
Indwe looks for prospects with passion and the ability to engage others
A person’s motives and character traits must culminate in the desired way of doing business at Indwe.” What are the employment/career opportunities within the company
Motau says learners/interns are trained in specialised areas such as individual insurance
liability cover and in managerial/leadership positions
Indwe also encourages interns to study Management/Leadership programmes and Risk and Management programme that are funded by INSETA
What are the typical things the interns receive practical training on
“Application of the theory in the workplace and proficiency in the application of work in areas they are exposed to in different fields eg individual insurance
business insurance and specialised insurance,” says Motau
The interns are also trained in soft skills as well as administration
“The interns are actively engaged in the programmes,” adds Motau
This approach ensures that interns not only gain practical experience about what must be done in the workplace
“Professional conduct is an absolute necessity when executing one’s work in the financial services industry,” says Motau
How does the company cater for providing work-based experience for unemployed youth
Indwe is always open to new talent especially among unemployed youth and provide opportunities for undergraduate students who need work-based experience to complete their tertiary qualification
The youth are also provided with qualified Indwe mentors and coaches to assist them in the workplace
Motau says although there is a risk of losing the learners to other insurance companies after they have been permanently employed at Indwe
they see this as an opportunity to promote youth employment
“Indwe trains unemployed interns with the aim to contribute to youth employment in South Africa
Whether workplace ready interns are employed by Indwe or another company
what is important is that they are active members in the economy of South Africa.” What are the ex-interns currently busy with
Seri Mofokeng (Specialist Risks & Projects Division)
“I work on Directors & Officers Liability
I also assist with the AAB (Africa Allied Broker) network
My responsibilities range from: corresponding with members; updating member documents; coordinating regional meetings and conferences and assisting with media related features as well as channelling member queries and sourcing quotations for new business opportunities
“We have global partners (such as UNIBA) who require information from us which I assist in submitting
which sometimes come from other branches or direct to Mr Drahota for Specialist type projects.”
Chrisann Naicker (Commercial Administrator)
“At the moment I am administering the Advocate Scheme for Advocates practices
I assist with financial administration such as invoicing and keeping track of payments; I update renewals and new business lists and let everyone know the renewals due in a specific month.”

MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - Three learners have been stabbed during two separate attacks involving Indwe Secondary School
22 August the KwaNonqaba Police responded in full force to yet another fight
seemingly a retaliation for an off premises incident on Wednesday
21 August when a 19-year-old learner of the school was stabbed in the back by another 19-year-old learner
several learners used a luxury vehicle to cart a bag full of weapons to the school.
It seems they may have been in cellphone communication with others
and were trying to arrange for back-up once the fight ensued
A group of approximately eight learners waited for others who were busy writing a test to finish before the fight broke out and the stabbings occurred in the presence of teachers
When a female teacher tried to intervene she was assaulted by the learners and had a school desk thrown at her
A Grade 9 and a Grade 10 learner was stabbed and injured in the Thursday morning incident

The KwaNonqaba Police confiscated several dangerous weapons
They also traced the vehicle that was used to distribute the weapons and arrested those involved
Several people were arrested for both stabbing incidents

residents from Indwe were promised a tar road to the Elitheni Coal Mine within six months
Seven years later they have a road littered with abandoned construction material, full of small, sharp stones that are very hard on tyres, with unsuitable bridges, and now projected to cost R20-million a kilometre due to the mishandling of a tender that was issued nine years ago.advertisementDon't want to see this? The contract for the road was originally awarded in 2013 to Tau Pele Construction — a company that was awarded the contract despite being in business rescue at the time
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport indicated then that it was expecting to pay about R10-million a kilometre for the road
According to a judgment in the drawn-out legal battle that followed between Tau Pele Construction and Umso Construction
a pre-check evaluation analysis had excluded Umso from bidding
but this was later changed to allow the company to bid
The abandoned upgrade to the access road from Indwe to the Elitheni Coal Mine
the evaluation committee concluded that the bid did not qualify because it did not comply with the experience criteria
This included that the contractor should have experience in handling a project of no less than R100-million
Umso took Tau Pele and the Eastern Cape Department of Transport to court to have the awarding of the Indwe contract overturned
arguing that Tau Pele had been placed under business rescue while the evaluation process was still in progress
The department had queried why it was not told that Tau Pele was in business rescue and
Lawyers for Tau Pele argued that the business rescue plan was implemented after the tender process had closed
and terminated before the tender contract was signed on 26 July 2013
it was a requirement that contractors should prove that they had the necessary financial resources to undertake and complete the work
The court set aside the awarding of the contract
but did not stipulate it should be awarded to Umso
as it is empowered to in exceptional circumstances
The matter then went to the Supreme Court of Appeal where judges
to ensure that the project was quickly finalised
Construction of the road began in August 2017
the six-month timeframe was a thing of the past and a new completion date was set for September 2019
The original price for the contract was R200,567,052.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
about two thirds of the road have been completed
Eastern Cape MEC for Transport Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe confirmed that 68% of the project had been completed. The contract with Umso Construction had been terminated. advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
The incomplete 15km access road from Indwe to Elitheni Coal Mine has caused an outcry from Indwe residents
“Umso Construction [Pty] Ltd went into business rescue and could not finish the project,” she said in a response to a question asked in the Eastern Cape Legislature by the Democratic Alliance’s Retief Odendaal
The amount paid to Umso Construction was R173,254,877.25
Tikana said the department was in the process of finalising the contract with another company
but said the appointment of the new contractor would happen only at the end of the 2022/2023 financial year “depending on funding availability” for completion the following year
“The anticipated cost to finalise the project is R135-million,” she said
She said the road would cost R110-million more than initially planned
“It must be taken into account that the escalation on the current project was an amount of R40-million due to the tender process taking place in 2012/2013 and implementation only took place in the 2017/2018 financial year.”advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Tikana said the department’s legal section was dealing with the issue and had submitted a claim of R2.4-million against Umso Construction
the project had been flagged by the Auditor-General for an overpayment of R37-million to Umso Construction
Residents from Indwe said they were better off with the old road. The half-constructed road was just bringing them trouble and had become dangerous to road users.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
said what angered them most was that Umso Construction had destroyed the previous gravel road that had been far better than the present one
we had hoped things would change for the better
We had a hope that they were going to complete the road immediately
but it seems things did not go according to plan,” he said
Residents complained that crushed stones on the road were dangerous
Helebhe said he did not understand why the construction had not been completed
“We were hoping that by this time we’ll be using a tar road.”
A taxi owner from Indwe, who asked not to be named, said they were not making any profit, but were instead running up debts because of the road.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Taxi owners were excited when the construction began and they heard the road would be tarred
“When it is raining it is difficult to drive on this road; we are running at a loss
we were told that this is supposed to be a tar road.”
“The construction company which was doing this road just disappeared in 2019 and we do not know what exactly happened.”
The taxi owner said some of the drivers are paid by the kilometre
“Imagine if you are making R10,000 a month as an owner then you use R6,000 for petrol
then you are left with R4,000 and you will need to repair tyres and pay a driver
He said the construction company had also demolished the community’s previous bridges
This made their lives difficult in rainy conditions
Odendaal said: “The fact that the contractor was overpaid indicates gross negligence on the part of the department in relation to project management
The Democratic Alliance has long been advocating for tighter controls when it comes to the appointment of contractors for large civil works
contractors are unable to complete these intricate projects which lead to huge financial losses by the government.”
provincial MEC for Finance Mlungisi Mvoko said it was imperative to ensure that infrastructure projects were delivered on time and within budget
During this period the Elunthini Coal Mine
a small scale operation that mines a high sulpher content coal that is apparently difficult to sell locally and internationally
It is currenly up for sale but unlikley to find any buyers until the road is complete
The Indwe area is economically extremely depressed so the provincial government’s support for a potential job creating industry was/is understandable even if wider public support for investment in the fossil fuel industry has also collapsed is this same period
This is what generally happens when the client
the consultant and the contractor are not professionally registered with ECSA

MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Learners at Indwe Secondary School in Mossel Bay have been protesting in front of the school gate since this morning
They are demanding that the whole school must be closed to be disinfected
following the positive Covid-19 test result of a learner
A spokesperson for the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) told the Mossel Bay Advertiser that a learner tested positive for Covid-19 and that they want the whole school to be disinfected
earlier explained that a confirmed case did not necessarily require a school to be closed
a number of factors will be considered in making the decision
the areas where the staff member/learner has physically been present need to be disinfected
if a staff member has only been in one or two rooms
it is possible for schooling to continue by cordoning off and sanitising those rooms,” said department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond
learners are now demanding that a department representative address them at the school entrance today
The learner alleged to the Advertiser that teachers were not being transparent about the number of positive Covid-19 cases at the school
“We heard from a teacher that two other teachers had been in isolation since testing positive
Why does the school not tell us this directly?”
The learner said fellow learners who had tested positive or who had been in close contact with a person who had tested positive
did not receive any support from the school in the form of study material for the isolation period
The Advertiser sent an enquiry to the Department of Education and is awaiting its comment
