Learners from Mdantsane township in East London have overcome enormous odds to excel in maths and physical sciences thanks to the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths
Science and Technology`s Promaths after-school tuition programme
the matric’s of 2021 endured even greater challenges over the previous year`s cohort
given that they were the first to contend with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic for two consecutive years
Mdantsane matric learners enrolled in the Promaths programme achieved a 100% pass rates for mathematics and physical sciences – the two “gateway” subjects deemed most critical for South Africa`s future growth
92% of the 60 Mdantsane pupils participating in the programme scored higher than 50% for mathematics and 90% of learners above 50% for physical sciences
Overcoming incredible lockdown challenges whereby the Mdantsane learners lost 70% of contact sessions during their grade 11 year
random school closures and phased-in teaching
the national general pass average for mathematics was 57.6% while the physical science average was 69% at the end of 2021
explains that more than 30,000 learners have passed successfully through the Promaths programme since its inception 16 years ago
The programme`s success is highly dependent on private sector partnerships with funders such as the Datatec Educational and Technology Foundation
who have supported the programme for 10 years

Kutlwanong is to accelerate the quality and quantity of STEM performance amongst township and rural youth in South Africa
the programme has advanced the Maths and Science performance of over 25,000 township and rural students
enabling over 7,000 students to achieve distinctions in Mathematics and Physical Science
Here we speak to Mabitselo further about Kutlwanong and its programmes
career path and alumni programmes to provide a pipeline of support for township and rural students to achieve top performance in Maths and Science; access tertiary education and enter professional careers
Promaths is the learner programme that advances the STEM performance of township and rural youth across South Africa
The programme is a platform for top performance in Math and Science
encouraging students to perform well in these and other subjects to obtain a Bachelors Pass - a key criteria for accessing tertiary education
Our programme also runs career roadshows where it exposes learners to scarce skills STEM careers
assists them with tertiary and bursary applications
enabling them to make informed decisions about their choice of career and place of study
We provide a springboard for learners to enter professional careers
learner support programme providing Maths and Science tuition; a teacher development programme providing curriculum support; Maths and Science content and training; a career path programme exposing learners to scarce skills careers and supporting them to access their careers; and an alumni programme that supports tertiary students
The programme is not open to application; schools are selected against a set internal criterion
Kutlwanong works with the Department of Education to identify learners and schools who participate in the programme
We do not accept applications or requests for interests in participation
our programme is funded by corporate support and most often we run programmes within the vicinity of a corporate footprint
our team works with the Department of Education in those provinces and districts to identify schools and learners to participate
We undergo a rigorous process of teacher selection
working with school principals and SGB’s to initiate our programme and harness parent
Teacher development is a part of the programme that runs training to equip and support teachers with Maths and Science content
The aim is to ensure teachers have the necessary knowledge and tools to transition content from the curriculum to the classroom
The curriculum team further works with teachers to track performance
identifying areas of poor learner performance
and how teachers and training can address this
Teacher development is also a platform to connect
train and foster talent amongst and between Kutlwanong educators
While these results are a testament to our learners’ hard work
as an organisation focused on constantly evolving we also explored ways to improve our performance year on year
we assessed the value chain of students that enter Kutlwanong at a Grade 10 level and the number of students who accessed STEM careers at tertiary institutions
Our aim is not only to boost performance in Maths and Science from Grade 10 onwards
but to also ensure that our mandate of facilitating a pool of black professionals to enter these STEM careers is fully realised
Our goals for 2020 and beyond is to boost the talent pool of black professionals in these scarce skills careers – we want to see our youth achieving top performance in high school but also entering tertiary education and becoming captains of industry across Mining
Covid-19 proved no match for the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths
Science and Technology’s Promaths after-school tuition programme which has again delivered incredible results
Despite the enormous challenges faced by the matric class of 2020
learners benefitting from the Promaths programme in the East London township of Mdantsane rose to the occasion to record remarkable performances in maths and physical science.
The arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa disrupted academic learning on an unprecedented scale
with the hard lockdown introduced in March last year proving to be especially taxing for matrics preparing for their all-important final exams
Yet as it has done so successfully in previous years
the Promaths programme of the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths
Science and Technology (“Kutlwanong”) was not only able to steer learners through troubled waters
but deliver them exceptional results in these two “gateway” subjects.
The programme is designed to speed up top-level results among Grades 10-12 learners in previously disadvantaged areas across South Africa
and for many years has enjoyed a highly successful track record in the Mdantsane cohort
As was the case with learners and institutions in the rest of the country
the 2020 Promaths cohort were forced to contend with the effects of the pandemic
that included the emotional trauma of losing loved ones.
Many of parents and guardians also lost their jobs while some homes experienced domestic abuse and other forms of violence.
Covid-19 also meant that Promaths centres had to rethink their strategies while recognising that internet connectivity and web access in township and rural areas remain a huge problem in South Africa.
But by employing a combination of online and face-to-face teaching sessions
Promaths was able to keep learners firmly on track
and also recover sessions that had been lost to the lockdown.
The outcome for the Mdantsane cohort was beyond what even programme facilitators would have imagined.
The group of 60 Eastern Cape learners recorded 100% pass rates in both maths and physical science
they achieved overall averages of 63% and 67% in these two subjects respectively
There were also 13 distinctions for maths and a staggering 22 distinctions for physical science among Mdantsane’s Promaths learners
Remembering that 2020 was a year like no other in recent history
some of the results are nothing short of spectacular.
of Khulani Commercial High School in Mdantsane
scored a near-perfect 98% for maths and 97% for physical science
scored 86% for maths and 90% for physical science.
Liphelo Morris left matric with 86% for maths and 91% for physical science
Another standout performer was Sandisiwe High School’s Kelly Mugonera
who notched up 80% for maths and 87% for physical science.
As a measure of just how much the Promaths learners benefit from the programme
in the 2019 National Senior Certificate examinations
the Eastern Cape pass rate average for maths and physical science was 41.8% and 70.3% respectively
Mdantsane’s Promaths learners achieved 98% and 99.8% respectively.
It is the kind of success Tumelo Mabitsela
has become accustomed to in the past 15 years thanks to the tireless efforts of the Promaths team who in that period have spurred more than 22,000 learners onto greater heights
Mabitsela also credits this success to private sector partnerships with funders like the Datatec Educational and Technology Foundation
which has been funding the Mdantsane Promaths group for 10 years.
in underprivileged communities in South Africa.
“Aside from the vital skills gap that maths and science education fills
day-to-day needs these vital subjects play in our ordinary living
or challenge our thinking,” Mabitsela says
our dream as an organisation is to see black underprivileged learners moving up through the ranks and going on to pursue careers in engineering
Nothing makes me happier than when I hear about professionals in these fields who once benefited from being on one of our extra-tuition programmes.”
Chairman of the Datatec Educational and Technology Foundation
believes it is vital to invest in organisations like Kutlwanong that are working directly at addressing the STEM needs in South Africa.
With the demand for STEM-based career professionals growing day by day
South Africa’s deepening maths-education crisis desperately requires creative interventions.
Kutlwanong’s Promaths learner programme provides additional maths and science tuition to Grade 10
Promaths also focuses on upskilling teachers by providing teaching aids to help educators deliver lessons in a more engaging
The content of the programmes is aligned with the National Department of Education’s curriculum
so learners are able to practice in a highly relevant
And the Promaths model focuses on both mastering theory and repeated content practice
with routine tests undertaken to ensure that students have grasped a concept before moving on to the next one
Matric pupils from the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths
Science and Technology in Mdantsane were celebrated this past weekend at a special awards ceremony at The Venue at Hemingways for their excellent 2021 results

"Providing support to these students will encourage them even more to realise their future dreams of success
It is through the support of organisations like this that we are able to assist young people to make this a reality."
The need for quality education is placed high on government's agenda as a national imperative
Currently South Africa has a significant skills gap in careers that require the fields of maths and science
has long recognised that the private sector has a critical role to play in working with government in order to have a meaningful impact on the education system
supporting initiatives that address the challenges facing the education system from Grade R to Matric
it funds a number of other programmes including teacher support programmes aimed at up-skilling teachers as well as a number of programmes providing curriculum based support materials to schools across the country
the group seeks to entrench its commitment to education and to make a sustainable difference in communities addressing their needs in a way that will benefit them over the long term
It is also our way of assisting government in relevant ways to advance its efforts towards the continuous provision of quality education," concludes Ivan
