Chairperson of Montana Agriculture and Mining, Dr Manson Mnaba says the Lebowakgomo Chicken Abattoir project is expected to create 800 jobs from the value chain, with the company envisioning a profit of R2 billion.
Speaking during the commissioning of the abattoir event led by premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba today, Mnaba said they hope the Land Bank will fund the farmers as promised, and that this project will trigger economic growth in the province.
Mnaba says the project has been spread out so that everyone , including small farmers can benefit.
He says the project will empower poor households and will help curb crime, because people sometimes commit crime as a means to put food on the table.
Mnaba says they will also work on a plan to build houses for employees so that they can live closer to work.

POLOKWANE-Fannie Malope Seribishane, the 57-year-old man accused of the fatal shooting of a nurse outside Lebowakgomo Hospital, is set to stand trial in the Limpopo High Court.
Seribishane has been formally indicted and is scheduled to appear before the Polokwane-based court from August 4 to August 8, facing a series of serious charges.
The charges against Seribishane include murder, domestic violence, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The case stems from the tragic incident on October 23, 2024, at approximately 5 pm, when the 52-year-old nurse was gunned down as she arrived for her shift at Lebowakgomo Hospital.
According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the provincial police spokesperson, the victim succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained near the hospital gate. Following the incident, a murder investigation was launched, and the case was transferred to the provincial detectives unit for further scrutiny.
The arrest of Seribishane occurred on November 13, 2024, following an intelligence-driven operation in Lebowakgomo Zone A. During the apprehension, law enforcement discovered that Seribishane was in possession of a police firearm and ammunition that had been reported stolen from the Seshego precinct in June 2024.
Police also seized a Volkswagen Golf 7, believed to have been used in the commission of the crime.
Seribishane opted not to apply for bail during his initial court appearance and has remained in custody since his arrest. The upcoming trial in August will see the prosecution present its case, detailing the alleged brutal murder and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The community awaits the outcome of the trial, seeking justice for the slain nurse.

Eskom in Limpopo has conceded that there are long queues at its Lebowakgomo customer services hub, but says consumers are being attended to.
Some of the consumers complained earlier today, that they have been queuing since the early hours of the morning without any assistance.
A register seen by Capricorn News showed there were over 500 people queuing to receive assistance before midday, and Eskom’s customer relations manager Matshidiso Phaladi could not say how many people have been registered so far.
Some people are seeking assistance with updating their meters ahead of the 24 November 2024 deadline.
Phaladi has urged consumers to only visit their offices when they have a specific challenge relating to their meter and not because they fear the looming deadline.

Capricorn FM’s Oratile Kekana reports:
Limpopo MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Nakedi Kekana says the revival of the Lebowakgomo Chicken Abattoir is a significant step in unlocking economic opportunities, boosting the local economy and creating sustainable jobs.
Kekana visited the abattoir today, where she was joined by Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Tshitereke Matibe and mayor of the Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality, Meriam Molala.
Kekana says the abattoir faced many challenges, which led to its decline, but with renewed focus and investment, the project aims to renew the region’s poultry industry.
She says once operational, the project will provide small-scale farmers with better access to the market and lead to higher returns in productivity.
Kekana says one of the urgent matters is ensuring that there is electricity and that all the broilers in that abattoir are ready.
The Capricorn District Municipality says the R700 million Mphahlele Regional Water Scheme and Lebowakgomo Regional Water Scheme projects which were meant to be completed by the end of this month, are now expected to be completed mid-September, due to the vandalism of more boreholes.
The two major projects in the Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality are currently at 97% completion and are expected to address the water supply challenges by providing an additional 7 megalitres a day.
Vandalism and theft of infrastructure have led to several delays in the projects and spokesperson for the district municipality Kgabo Senyatsi says the equipment needed to repair of all the boreholes has been sourced from China at an additional cost of R1.8 million.
He says the equipment is expected to be delivered next week and the contractor may need about two weeks to complete the repairs.

The accident has left fans and the music community in a state of concern as details about his condition remain unconfirmed.
The incident reportedly occurred late Saturday evening, but as of now, there is no official confirmation regarding Shebeshxt’s health status.

The Programme Coordinator for the Kagisano Programme at Lawyers for Human Rights in Limpopo, Bertha Chiguvare, says there is an urgent need to recognise xenophobic attacks for their true nature.
Speaking on Capricorn Talk last night, Chiguvare said some foreign nationals in Lebowakgomo are still traumatised after they were attacked last month.
The march by street vendors on the 22nd of February was meant to be a peaceful one to the Lepelle-Nkumpi municipality offices but it ended with the mass looting of foreign-owned spaza shops and burning of stalls belonging to foreign nationals in Lebowakgomo.
Chiguvare says they’ve since managed to visit the area and engaged with affected groups from Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo who are living in fear, and their children are not going to school.
She says some groups revealed to the organisation during engagements, that there are locals who have been soliciting protection fees from them.
Chiguvare has emphasised the importance of the police fully dedicating themselves to addressing these attacks.

Convening partner from the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court, Heloise Voster says she is proud of what they have achieved as a team, with the teams dealing with divorce showing innovative ways to reduce the backlog in the number of cases.
Speaking during the “End GBVF 100-day challenge” close out event on Thursday, Voster said the teams in Polokwane did community work by going over stocks of divorce files, doing administrative work and ascertain what files should be closed and the ones that should be placed on record.
Voster indicated that the divorce matters were reduced by 38.6% , with sexual offences matters reduced by over 43% , saying this is a milestone for them to have been able to do it in less than 3 months.
She says the legal aid and family advocates also came on board and assisted with ensuring that the cases go to court and are finalized without waiting on the plaintiffs and it helped speed up a lot of cases.
Voster says the courts went as far as having virtual hearings to assist some of the people who could not physically be available at court as some people work far from the courts where their cases are being heard.

They are concerned about the lack of water

Residents of Ga-Mphahlele and Lebowakgomo are concerned about the lack of water
This is despite the area being home to two major water treatment plants

Residents have expressed their unhappiness
“We are always struggling to get water here
but we were not told anything about the project,” explains another resident Godfrey Maafa
sometimes we ask for water from those who have private boreholes
it’s extremely hard when you are living with children
On the other side we have flushing toilets
so the situation is bad here,” says Lerato Sehlapelo
Authorities say augmenting the water treatment plants will benefit thousands of households in the Lepelle-Nkumpi and Polokwane municipalities
Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu says
“We are no longer in the habit of dealing with such schemes
We go over the mountains over the mountains just because we’re one second and very often it would be a city or a town
We love the people of the cities and towns as much as we love the people in rural areas
And we’re now closing and eliminating the gap that has been in existence but jumping them no more
Lepelle Northern Water says it has invested billions of rands into the project
“We’ve invested about R4.5 billion on this project to ensure that there’s that reliability of water
And the focus now is not only on the city is to ensure that the communities around get reliable clean water
reliable water at all times which they were not getting for many years,” says Nndweleni Mphephu
The project is expected to create over a thousand jobs during the construction phase and a further 90 jobs upon completion
Tensions are still high in Lebowakgomo in Limpopo, following the torching of business stalls belonging to hawkers who are foreign nationals. The community members and hawkers are accusing the foreign nationals of illegally occupying trading spaces in the town at the expense of local traders.
They’re also accusing the Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality of not implementing by-laws on hawkers and of failing to remove the foreign nationals whom they accuse of selling without permits.
Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality Spokesperson, Lesiba Ledwaba says the foreign nationals will be allocated a space following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.
“As the municipality, we condemn the act of violence and also (the) demolishment of foreign nationals’ mini shops. The mayor (had) several meetings with the workers association, (and) key amongst other issues was to have an action plan in terms of relocating them today … your site, which the municipality has since allocated.”

The Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality has condemned the mass looting of foreign-owned spaza shops in Lebowakgomo, following a protest by hawkers, which turned violent on Thursday.
What began as a peaceful march by the street vendors to the municipality’s offices in Lebowakgomo to hand over a memorandum, turned into violent acts of looting and burning of stalls belonging to foreign nationals.
Central to their demands, the hawkers who are trading illegally in the CBD and disrupting traffic flow, are calling on the municipality to legalise them and to also remove stalls owned by foreign nationals.
Municipal spokesperson Lazzy Ledwaba says they have been engaging with hawkers on plans to legalise them and the municipality has already identified land where all the street vendors can be relocated to.
He indicated that the situation in the CBD remains calm and engagements with the hawkers are continuing to find an amicable solution.
