"You can really find some hidden gems in non-league."
Martial Godo is proof of his own declaration, having moved directly from Margate FC to Fulham in March 2022
The forward's transfer instantly elevated Godo through six tiers of the English football pyramid
as he swapped the Isthmian League at level seven for the Premier League
an annual celebration of the football pyramid
Godo returned to his previous club where he was reunited with his former team-mate
"It was a great experience for me and it made me into who I am today," Godo told Fulham's official website, speaking about his stint at Margate from a seat inside their Hartsdown Park ground.
"It plays a big part in how I play today as well. There are a lot of things that you learn in a changing room, on the pitch as well with the physicality and the tactics.
"It's much more raw. But it's about doing anything that you need to do to get the three points and move up the league."
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fulham Football Club (@fulhamfc)
Greenhalgh explained how Godo's journey to Fulham began in non-league football
came and trialled at Dartford [where I was playing at the time]
It was an obvious yes for us because he just had a spark," said Greenhalgh
we managed to get him down here at Margate
where he was playing for the [Dartford] Academy still on a Wednesday and playing here for Margate on a Saturday
when he first came on for us and then from there
I think that was because of how much he wanted it and how much he still wants it now
because we can still see that in his game now."
Greenhalgh recalled how scouts from several Premier League clubs came to watch Godo in non-league action
"I think non-league is just an absolute transfer window," he added. "When Martial started playing really well and getting his name out there, you were rocking up to Margate and suddenly there was Fulham there, Arsenal there and Manchester City there."
Godo played 22 matches for Margate before making his big move to Fulham, initially going into the club's Premier League 2 side. Marco Silva handed him his senior debut in the EFL Cup against Crawley Town in August 2022
"I don't know if people know this but I think I even cried the next day," Godo revealed
"It was a surreal moment because it was like everything I had been working for when I was at Margate
It was the icing on the cake for me and my family as well."
The pacey forward gained more senior experience in 2022/23 during a loan spell at Wigan Athletic
where he registered four goals and four assists in 34 League One appearances
To date, Godo has featured in five first-team matches for Fulham and, after signing a new contract at Craven Cottage last September
he remains grateful for the platform that Margate gave him
"Going into men's football [with Margate] from academy football [with Dartford]
the physicality taught me to ride out a challenge
"I think what makes non-league special to me is the authenticity
from the pitches - you could be playing on mud or 4G - to the changing rooms
has got to keep believing in themselves and trust the process."
Margate has benefited from £160,000 from the Premier League Stadium Fund since 2020 that has enabled them to build new changing rooms
In total through the Premier League Stadium Fund
more than £207million has been invested into improving the stadiums and facilities of clubs in the EFL
National League System and Women’s Football Pyramid since 2000

***RESULTS PROBLEM FOR THIS MORNINGS RUN***
Two people have drowned on the South Coast yesterday while a third person remains missing in incidents less than an hour apart at Margate and Palm Beach
A man and a woman got into trouble after they went swimming near the Margate fishing pier
In a statement the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said their Shelly Beach crew were alerted of a drowning in progress at Margate pier just after 16:00
Eyewitness reported a man and woman caught in the rip currents
An unknown bystander managed to get the woman out of the water and onto the beach
He tried to go back into the water for the other person
but was forced back by rough seas because of Spring high tide
The NSRI commended the man for his brave efforts
While lifeguards continued to search for the man who disappeared under water
NSRI crew and paramedics attempted CPR on the woman
confirmed that the search for the missing man continues
The search is being handled by the police and NSRI
the NSRI’s Shelly Beach crew were alerted of a drowning incident at Palm Beach
the NSRI issued a warning about the full moon Spring tide and the dangers it held with higher than normal high tides and lower low tides impacting the shoreline and sea currents

Managers of building in which Emin owns a flat want to replace windows but opponents say they are a key feature
The 18-storey Arlington House in Margate has long been considered a brutalist masterpiece
It inspired the English rock band Hawkwind’s song High Rise and recently featured in Sam Mendes’s Bafta-nominated film Empire of Light
which sits on Margate seafront next to the railway station and the amusement park Dreamland
has become the cause of a bitter dispute among local people
One of the UK’s most prominent artists, Tracey Emin
is among hundreds of people protesting against the building management’s proposed changes to the tower’s original windows
which have been in place since its opening in December 1963
the architectural preservation charity the Twentieth Century Society and 200 others have lodged objections with Thanet district council
They say changes will destroy the architectural character of the block
reduce views of the coast from inside and irrevocably ruin the authenticity of the building
“Arlington House is a historic building in Margate
at the time of its construction Margate was booming and it was an emblem of the future,” Emin said
“In the last few decades it’s been left to go to rack and ruin without care or respect for its monumental brutalist architecture
If this building were in any European town or city it would have been protected from the beginning
It should be listed and renovated back to its original beauty.”
Emin, who was nominated for the Turner prize, opened Tracey Emin Studios in Margate last year and said Arlington House’s leaseholders
“understood this responsibility” when taking on the building and should not get away with “replacing the original windows with bulky
She added: “As a flat owner in Arlington House I’m totally opposed to their proposal
In short these are the wrong windows for this building.”
Freshwater says the replacement window scheme should have a positive impact on people who live in the building and the area as a whole
The company says the window replacements are part of a wider repair and refurbishment scheme that when completed will help restore the prominent building
Freshwater has said the difference between the existing and new windows is “minimal” and will not alter the heritage and legacy of the building
But people who live in the block say the plans will ruin the aesthetic of the 142-flat building and its view
One person said planners wanted to remove the original sliding windows and replace them with “tilt and turn” ones with thicker frames
This would involve the window frame being made five times thicker
It is also understood that the lease structure
in the building means that not all the windows will be changed
which will lead to a patchwork of window types
Those protesting say no elevations of the proposal have been submitted for planning so it is impossible to understand what the building will look like
and blame “London hipsters” for flocking to Margate and the tower and preventing essential modernisation
Lyndon Brand, 60, told KentOnline the windows are “just terrible
the heat distorts the frames and cracks the glass
The slightly thicker frames are a small price to pay
Another person in the block said her heating bill was “astronomically” expensive
Arlington House was designed by the architect Russell Diplock
who also designed the Brighton Centre and nearby Churchill Square
and was initially advertised as “Britain’s first ‘park and buy’ shopping centre with luxury flats”
The sides of the building have a wave-like design
which provides every flat with inland and sea views
the commercial section is vacant after a proposal to redevelop it into a Tesco store was unsuccessful
Thanet district council said: “While we do not comment on individual planning applications
each one is considered on its own merits and takes into account feedback from the public and relevant bodies
“All comments received in relation to this application can be viewed on our planning portal
The planning committee will be provided with a summary of the comments received so that they can be fully considered when the application is determined.”

celebrated his 28th birthday dinner with his family on Dec
Detectives blamed Deltoro for his 60-year-old mother’s death during a fight with his father at their home in Margate
his manslaughter trial started in Broward County Circuit Judge Lorena V
Deltoro was “a bit frantic” after the shooting
Richard Bravo-Brown said during his testimony in court
jurors watched a video showing Deltoro’s interrogation at the Margate Police Department before his arrest on Dec
After the detective asked if he had pulled out the gun to scare his father during the fight
Prosecutors said the conflict started when Deltoro allegedly elbowed his father in the face to stop him from singing while he was driving them home after dinner and it escalated at home after he threw a water bottle
the argument in the car had escalated to a fight at home when Deltoro’s glasses fell off and he grabbed a 9mm Glock
Deltoro said he “pulled out the firearm but did not mean to discharge it,” Cobban wrote
while physically trying to stop him and his father from fighting
Prosecutors filed a case against him on Dec
a first-degree felony; carrying a concealed firearm
County court records show his arraignment was on Jan
and Broward County Sheriff’s Office correctional deputies released him a day later on a $40,000 bond
The World Health Organization declared the pandemic on March 11
and the public health emergency delayed court cases
Deltoro’s defense claimed it was a self-defense shooting because he saw his father reaching for a gun
but the judge sided with the prosecution and denied the Stand Your Ground motion to dismiss the case

We were wondering whether parkrun would go ahead this week as Storm Bert caused cancellations across the country
and 109 people bravely ventured out to complete parkrun this week despite the gusty winds
An extra special thank you to first timer Layla Heath and her dad Alex
Layla is volunteering as part of her Duke of Edinburgh
with regular Paul Suttle completing his 250th parkrun
228 of these have been at Margate - what a fantastic achievement
who regularly volunteers as a marshal for us was celebrating a birthday this week - here she is in action at the bandstand and with Tina and Kwankou who were also fabulous marshals today
We had nine parkrun regulars visiting Margate parkrun for the first time this week
including visitors from London who were celebrating Alex's birthday
Among the six completely new first timers to parkrun this week (you chose a wonderful week for it...) were Chien and Ishani who were running with Aryan
They have started working at QEQM so we hope to see them again another week
As many of you know
He's volunteering as a pacer next week so we've been practising getting round the course in 31 minutes
some visitors came up to thank us for pacing them (unintentionally!)
We enjoyed chatting to them but I didn't catch their names - sorry
They're currently trying to complete all the parkrun events in Kent (the 100 per-Kent challenge) and particularly recommended Lullingstone parkrun
If you'd like to volunteer to be a pacer please do email in with a time you would like to do - we go up to 55 minutes
Thank you so much to all of our wonderful volunteers so far
