Heavy rains that hit the Eastern Cape over the past two days have left pensioners at Thembalethu Old Age Home in Mdantsane in Buffalo City Metro without sleeping mattresses and blankets.
The rainfall resulted in flooding and extensive damage to the home.
The pensioners say the situation will have a detrimental effect on their health.
Thembalethu old age home houses 40 pensioners with different health conditions. The pensioners say the roof of the house is unable to withstand heavy rainfall.
Mdantsane’s Thembalethu Old Age Home pleads for assistance
Pensioner Nonkululeko Ngcengce says she fears that the current condition of the home places their health at risk. “This affects us badly because it is raining inside here, and we wake up soaking wet in bed. We are forced to sleep on other people’s beds, but that is not acceptable because these beds are small, they are single beds, but what can we do?”
Thembalethu Old Age homeowner Nada Gongotha fears that with more rainfall expected this week, the home may experience more damage.
“Because it’s such an inconvenience to congest them in one bed, they are going to infect each other, some are sick and very old and when they are congested, they get body pains and some are in diapers. Since the rain is now going to continue, we don’t know.”
Corene Conradie, a volunteer with the NGO Gift of the Givers, says they have donated blankets and mattresses as a temporary solution for the home.
“This current old age home has been victim of flooding quite often when there are heavy rains they are always affected, in the last few years, gift of the givers worked with Thembalethu old age home, and sadly they are not funded at the moment, they solely depend on the social grants of these elderly. After food purchases are done, whatever change is left, they have to use to try and do maintenance, which is really not a lot.”

Fort Hare boxing sensation Asemahle Sotwili is primed for another bumper year in the ring. The 19-year-old LLB student started her second year at UFH as a multiple gold medallist and national representative.
She most recently added the University Sports South Africa 52kg division title to her ever-growing list of accolades following a demolition job on her opponents in December.
Sotwili hails from Mdantsane, which is widely considered a breeding ground for world champion South African fighters. These include the likes of Vuyani Bungu, Welcome Ncita, Hawk Makepula and Noni “She Bee Stingin” Tenge.
It was here that the young Wongalethu High School learner joined a gym and started making an impact with her glovework. Her coach, Vuyani Boqwana, recognised that the diminutive pugilist could go far in the sport with the right guidance.
Her first major fight had been against a fellow gym member in 2020, which see recalled as a baptism of fire.
“It was tough because she was strong and more experienced,” Sotwili said.
Undeterred and inspired by Tenge’s achievements, which saw the latter become South Africa’s premier boxer, she continued to pound the heavy bag in training.
She improved rapidly and caught the attention of the Eastern Cape boxing community when she KO’d all her opponents at a tournament in Mthatha.
These performances saw her being called up to the junior provincial squad for the nationals, where she continued swinging away at her peers to win selection to the junior SA team for the Region 5 Games in Malawi.
In one especially memorable bout in the capital Lilongwe, the then 17-year-old pummelled her Mozambican opponent to such an extent that the fight had to be stopped before the first bell.
In 2024, she won the gold medal at the Sanabo National Boxing Championships to book a spot in the national team for a tournament in Mozambique, which was postponed to this year.
Sotwili said she loved being in the ring and everything else about the sport.
“Boxing helps me learn skills and overcome fears. It also improves my fitness and helps me think differently.”
Although her path in the sport was largely set out prior to her tertiary studies, she enjoys the fact that Fort Hare’s boxing programme emphasises being fighting fit in the lecture hall, too.
And, of course, having an experienced hand like fellow SA representative Vuyolwethu Dila in their ranks has proved invaluable.
“She motivates me to do better,” Sotwili admitted.

the Buffalo City metro's general manager for Municipal Health Services spoke to eNCA
Residents of Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape have welcomed the decision by the Hawks to investigate allegations of fraud and corruption in the refurbishment of the Mdantsane swimming pool.
To date, more than R32 million has been spent on refurbishing the facility, yet it remains in a deplorable state.
Last month the Hawks conducted a search and seizure operation at the Supply Chain offices of the Buffalo City Metro.
The Metro’s spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya says they are conducting their own investigation into the matter.
“Clearly, there has been some wrongdoing from the side of us as officials and also from the project manager in terms of service providers. Anyone who has been found to have been on the wrong side of the law should be taken into account. From our side, we are working around the clock with the new report that has been tabled to Council while on the other side, the investigations are continuing.”
Insiders close to the club have indicated that Sekhukhune United are the team believed to have made enquiries about the 30-year-old as Amakhosi prepare for a squad overhaul
READ: Pirates Sign 'The New Mofokeng'
The Siya sources added Sekhukhune’s coach Eric Tinkler is keen on reuniting with Mdantsane
having worked with the midfielder during his productive spell at Cape Town City
"Coach Eric Tinkler knows him better and he played part of his best football under him at Cape Town City and it's believed that now he wants him at Sekhukhune United
The club has shown interest in him and things could happen at the start of next season but the interest from Sekhukhune United is there
A second insider hinted that Chiefs are likely to release or loan out Mdantsane at the end of the season
which could open the door for Sekhukhune United to swoop in
"Sekhukhune United could have the advantage of signing Mdu (Mdantsane) because Chiefs are looking at either loaning him out or to release him permanently with his contract remaining with one year on it and this could give Sekhukhune United the chance to sign him
They may wait for Chiefs to make the decision and move in or they could start talks even before the end of the season," the second source stated

Mdantsane, who joined Amakhosi in 2023 on a three-year deal, featured in many games last season but had struggled for game time in this campaign at both Chiefs and Richards Bay. His current contract is set to expire in June 2026, according to Siya sources.

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has denied rumours that the club is set to sign Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Mdantsane
insiders close to both clubs have indicated that negotiations could be underway for Mdantsane's potential return to Cape Town City
READ: Nabi's First 10 Games: The Positives Negatives
the former Baroka FC midfielder is considering the move to gain more playing time and revitalise his career
It's not a done deal yet but there could be a deal in January whereby Mdu (Mdantsane) goes to Cape Town City
It's all about game time for the player and as for City it's about strengthening their squad as they want to fight for a better position in the league mainly in the second round and they feel the experience of Mdantsane can help them," the Siya source stated
A second insider noted the primary consideration: whether Mdantsane could join City on a short-term loan or permanently?
READ: Revenge: Mofokeng Stunner Fires Bucs Past Magesi
"Those are the few issues that they are supposed to look at. You know he still has a contract until June 2026 so that's what they also have to look at whether they will just need him for this second half of the season or if they would want to keep him further after this season and that means buying him permanently from Chiefs. They have to finalise those details soon," the second source stated.
Comitis, however, firmly stated, "That's not true," in response to whether City will sign the Amakhosi player.
Chiefs did not respond to inquiries at the time of preparing this story. Despite Comitis's denial, whether as a short-term solution or a permanent addition, the resolution of any future discussions could provide a strategic advantage for City while offering Mdantsane the opportunity to reignite his playing career.
In his first season with Chiefs, Mdantsane played a fair amount of Premiership games. However, this season he has not featured due to injury recovery and his exclusion from coach Nasreddine Nabi's plans, leading to speculation about a loan or permanent move. Comitis' denial could also mean that Mdantsane's name was a possibility but now with Eric Tinkler having parted ways at the Cape Town club, things could have changed.
Muhsin Ertugral was named CT City's interim coach on Thursday, and he is expected to move into the technical director position at the end of this campaign. It remains to be seen whether Mdantsane could be a target for Ertugral.

The Siya crew has been led to believe that Kaizer Chiefs have tabled a three-year deal for Cape Town City midfielder Mduduzi Mdantsane
The Naturena-based side tried to secure the services of the ex-Baroka FC captain during the January transfer window
Soccer Laduma then reported that they would make another attempt to sign the 28-year-old attacking midfielder and it now appears a deal is in place for Mdantsane to make his dream move back to the Soweto giants
having come through the club's development structures before turning professional.

Learners from Mdantsane township in East London have overcome enormous odds to excel in maths and physical sciences thanks to the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology`s Promaths after-school tuition programme.
In many respects, the matric’s of 2021 endured even greater challenges over the previous year`s cohort, given that they were the first to contend with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic for two consecutive years.
Yet in a remarkable outcome, Mdantsane matric learners enrolled in the Promaths programme achieved a 100% pass rates for mathematics and physical sciences – the two “gateway” subjects deemed most critical for South Africa`s future growth.
Even more significantly, 92% of the 60 Mdantsane pupils participating in the programme scored higher than 50% for mathematics and 90% of learners above 50% for physical sciences.
Overcoming incredible lockdown challenges whereby the Mdantsane learners lost 70% of contact sessions during their grade 11 year, random school closures and phased-in teaching.
To put this performance into context, the national general pass average for mathematics was 57.6% while the physical science average was 69% at the end of 2021.
Tumelo Mabitsela, CEO for Kutlwanong, explains that more than 30,000 learners have passed successfully through the Promaths programme since its inception 16 years ago.
The programme`s success is highly dependent on private sector partnerships with funders such as the Datatec Educational and Technology Foundation, who have supported the programme for 10 years.
Maya Makanjee, Chairperson of the Datatec Educational and Technology Foundation, says investing in organisations like Kutlwanong that are working directly at addressing the STEM needs in South Africa is paramount.
While the entire ’21 Mdantsane compliment put in exceptional performances, Ulwazi High School`s William Somta stood out for scoring a perfect 100% for mathematics and 99% for physical sciences.
Another Ulwazi High matric, Olwami Mazomba, also shone with 97% for mathematics, while Vulamazibuko High School`s Inathi Melento achieved 91% for maths and 90% for physical sciences.
The effectiveness of the Promaths programme, designed to speed up top-level results among grades 10-12 learners in previously disadvantaged areas across South Africa, and the impact it is having on the young people of Mdantsane is remarkable.
The programme content is aligned with the National Department of Education`s CAPS curriculum, therefor learners are able to practise in a highly relevant, appropriate manner.
Since arriving at Amakhosi, the 31-year-old has been struggling to recreate the form that saw him a prolific scorer while at Marumo Gallants.
