Public logistics infrastructure in the North West is in a critical state
says Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA)
functional transportation systems including much-needed upgrades to roads
railways and airports are needed to position the agriculture and mining-dependent province as an import and export hub
says such transport deficiencies have far-reaching economic impacts
This comes as the Mmabatho Airport in Mahikeng remains largely unused after a R400 million SA Express tender was unscrupulously spent and the airport’s potential as a cargo port was also wasted.
“The fact that we have on our doorstep here in Mahikeng an airport which was functional, which can be grown to not only service commuter passengers but also the transport of goods and services. Our neighbouring countries are on the border and certainly one can look at Mahikeng as an airport itself as a hub for the export and even import of goods that then can be transported inland,” says Campbell.
Meanwhile, the provincial Department of Community Safety and Transport Management says it has accepted bids for the management and maintenance of the airport as well as the Pilanesberg International Airport.
“The bidders had requested more time given the technicality of the requirements and I gave a directive that we must extend until the 22nd of February,” elaborates MEC Wessels Morweng.
“So we are calling all capable people to come and partner with us to resuscitate Mahikeng airport which will in the main be used as a cargo, and also to resuscitate Pilanesberg airport which we want to use for passenger lifting so it’s for that reason that transport is very important in enabling the economy,” he adds.

Access to water and sanitation is recognised as a fundamental human right, essential for health, dignity and prosperity, according to the United Nations (UN) Water. But for many in South Africa, this is not the case, as communities endure the daily inconvenience and health hazards of sewage spills
residents face constant sewage spills caused either by government negligence or by some locals tampering with the sewerage system
The situation highlights the ongoing struggle for basic services and the urgent need for solutions to protect public health and well-being
The picture is bleak for residents of areas such as Danville in Mahikeng who have sewage spills right on their doorstep
“For the past 20 years we’ve been living in conditions such as this
this to me is very inhumane because now waterborne diseases are increasing,” one resident laments
the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality has acknowledged the problem
“Our streams that feed Letlamoreng and Setumo Dam are indeed contaminated by various sources
we must concede that our Two-Ways water treatment plant is not operational
That is the Mmabatho and the Mahikeng wastewater treatment plant
This is a result of the termination of the service provider who was doing the operation and maintenance of the Mahikeng and Mmabatho wastewater treatment plants
We are in the process of appointing another service provider who will do operation and maintenance at the Two-Way wastewater treatment plant.”
former EFF National Organizer and Member of Parliament from the Northern Cape
has announced her decision to leave the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and join Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK Party)
This move mirrors the recent actions of Floyd Shivambu
who has also switched allegiance to the MK Party
Mmabatho Mokause has been a formidable figure within the EFF since its inception
Known for her dedication to the party’s ideals and her robust leadership
Mokause has served as a Member of Parliament
Her political career has been marked by her strong advocacy for social justice
and the rights of marginalized communities in South Africa
Mokause’s role as the EFF’s National Organizer placed her at the heart of the party’s grassroots mobilization efforts
where she was instrumental in expanding the party’s influence
Her decision to join the MK Party is seen as a significant blow to the EFF
especially considering her deep roots in the Northern Cape and her close working relationship with EFF leaders like Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu
who recently resigned from the EFF to join Jacob Zuma’s MK Party
has been actively recruiting key EFF members who did not make it onto the party’s parliamentary list
Shivambu’s departure from the EFF has sent shockwaves through the political arena
and his subsequent appointment as the National Organizer for the MK Party has intensified speculation about the party’s growing influence and potential to attract disillusioned EFF members
Shivambu’s recruitment drive has reportedly targeted individuals like Mokause
who have expressed dissatisfaction with the EFF’s internal dynamics and the party’s strategic direction
His efforts have been described as part of a broader strategy to build a strong
drawing from the ranks of seasoned politicians who have experience in parliamentary procedures and a track record of grassroots mobilization
under the stewardship of leaders like Mmabatho Mokause
has been a critical battleground in South Africa’s political landscape
The province’s performance in the 2024 general elections provides a window into the shifting allegiances and the changing fortunes of political parties in the region
the EFF’s performance in the Northern Cape saw a noticeable decline compared to the 2019 elections
the EFF managed to secure a significant portion of the vote
establishing itself as a formidable opposition party in the province
the 2024 elections painted a different picture
with the party losing ground to both the ANC and the newly formed MK Party
Analysts attribute this decline to several factors
including internal divisions within the EFF
dissatisfaction among the electorate with the party’s handling of key issues
and the emergence of the MK Party as a viable alternative
under the leadership of figures like Jacob Zuma and Floyd Shivambu
capitalized on the growing disillusionment among voters
particularly those who felt that the EFF had lost its revolutionary zeal
The comparison between the 2019 and 2024 election results highlights the challenges facing the EFF in maintaining its foothold in the Northern Cape
The loss of key leaders like Mokause to the MK Party is likely to exacerbate these challenges
as the party struggles to retain its base in a province that has become increasingly competitive
Floyd Shivambu’s transition from the EFF to the MK Party has been one of the most talked-about developments in South African politics this year
After serving as the EFF’s Deputy President for several years
Shivambu’s resignation and subsequent appointment as the National Organizer for the MK Party signaled a significant realignment in the country’s political dynamics
Shivambu has been vocal about his reasons for leaving the EFF and joining the MK Party
He has criticized the EFF’s leadership
for what he perceives as a departure from the party’s original revolutionary principles
Shivambu has also emphasized his commitment to building the MK Party into a powerful political force that can challenge the status quo and advocate for radical economic transformation
Shivambu outlined his vision for the MK Party
stating that the party aims to “restore the revolutionary spirit that has been lost in South African politics.” He also took the opportunity to praise Jacob Zuma for his leadership and for providing a platform for those who still believe in the ideals of the liberation struggle
Shivambu’s remarks have resonated with many within the MK Party
particularly those who feel that the EFF has become too focused on electoral politics at the expense of its revolutionary ideals
His appointment as National Organizer is seen as a strategic move to bolster the MK Party’s organizational capacity and to attract disaffected members from other political formations
The EFF has been facing significant challenges in recent months
not least due to the departure of key figures like Floyd Shivambu and Mmabatho Mokause
the party has continued its efforts to mobilize its base
the EFF held a Gauteng Ground Forces Forum
which was addressed by party leader Julius Malema
The forum was an attempt to rally the party’s supporters and to address concerns about the direction of the party in the wake of Shivambu’s resignation
Malema used the platform to reaffirm the party’s commitment to its revolutionary principles and to reassure supporters that the EFF remains a powerful force in South African politics
In addition to the Gauteng Ground Forces Forum
the EFF also conducted a visit to KwaZulu-Natal to assess the state of the organization in the province
This visit was seen as particularly important
given the province’s historical significance and its role as a stronghold for both the ANC and the newly formed MK Party
Malema and other EFF leaders engaged with local structures and supporters
addressing concerns about the party’s future and its ability to compete with the MK Party in the region
The visit also provided an opportunity for the EFF to demonstrate its organizational strength and to counter the narrative that the party is in decline following the departure of key leaders
As the MK Party continues to gain momentum
the party’s leadership has embarked on a series of provincial visits to assess the state of the organization and to strategize for the upcoming municipal elections
These visits are part of a broader plan to solidify the party’s presence across South Africa and to build a strong
the MK Party has announced plans to visit other provinces
where the recent defection of Mmabatho Mokause is expected to strengthen the party’s position
These provincial visits are being led by senior MK Party leaders
who are working to ensure that the party’s structures are well-prepared for the challenges ahead
The MK Party’s strategy involves not only recruiting disillusioned members from other political formations but also building a grassroots movement that can effectively challenge the dominance of the ANC and the EFF in key provinces
The party’s leadership is focusing on issues such as economic empowerment
which resonate with a broad section of the South African electorate

Plans are afoot to restore the George Dick Montshioa Airport to its former glory in a bid to boost tourism
trade and investment in the North West capital Mahikeng
It has been more than three years since the airport was renamed George Dick Montshioa
but the airport still bears the branding and signage of Mafikeng Airport
The Mahikeng Local Municipality notes on its website that “the Mahikeng Airport
The airport is designed to accommodate large aircraft and is not only ideal for both business and leisure activities but has been used on many occasions to host international as well as national air shows.”
The municipality further notes that “untapped business market in Mahikeng continues to flourish as the municipality still offers lucrative business packages for industrial
residential and business developments projects
Mahikeng is a city of opportunities in the sector of agriculture manufacturing
Maine said these facilities would boost tourism
Maine said: “We are focusing on young people; we want to complete in this financial year all the infrastructure programmes; we want to bring the Mmabatho Stadium to its former glory so that we can host national and international games
That is what is going to make me sleep well at night
I want to see Mahikeng Stadium and the airport working again,” Maine said
Maine was referring to assets that have been left to deteriorate for more than two decades
some Mahikeng residents believe Maine’s dream is unrealistic
we don’t want to hear or discuss it because I’ve seen the contrary for the past 30 years,” a resident said
“There is no reason Mahikeng is what it is today
it is because of a lack of leadership that Mahikeng is where it is
We should be asking them questions about what happened.”

We catch up with the award-winning chef of Emazulwini
about the inspiration behind her exciting menu and how she is creating a voice for African stories through food
Chef Mmabatho Molefe of Emazulwini was awarded the Eat Out Naked Malt Rising Star award during the 2022 Eat Out awards
This award is bestowed on an upcoming chef that is making a distinctive mark in the industry
The judges noted that Chef Mmabatho Molefe evokes an emotional connection to food with truly inspirational and distinctively clever recipes that transform favourite meals from her childhood into fine dining dishes
Her maverick food pays homage to her heritage and represents an exciting new approach to South African cuisine
“My intention has always been to create a voice for African stories through food,” shares Mmabatho
Emazulwini serves up Nguni-inspired traditional dishes featuring lesser-known cuts of meat like heart
that she then reimagines under a fine dining frame
“The most important thing for us is to stay true to ourselves and the brand
It’s not always easy but we continue to strive to uphold the ingredients and dishes we believe in versus whatever the current food trends are out there.”
The recently updated menu at Emazulwini is a take on a Sunday lunch and features dishes like the starter dish ‘Ulimi noshatini’ (beef tongue and tomato relish)
“I’ve always loved tongue and have always thought of it as a cold meat or a deli meat
I like the idea of serving it with that salsa you’re sure to find at a typical South African braai
shares Mmabatho on the inspiration behind this dish
A post shared by Emazulwini Restaurant (@emazulwini_restaurant)
‘Isiklabhu’ is a hearty lamb dish accompanied by samp
“I wanted to be able to put up a dish that is all about flavour
samp is slow cooked with minimal additions
ours is creamy and pairs well with a grilled lamb chop
Her current favourite dish is ‘Ujelly nocustard’
berry jelly and blueberry cheesecake ice cream
my mother was obsessed with the store-bought blueberry cheesecake-flavoured ice cream
It was a recurring Sunday dessert staple and so
this one is inspired by my mother’s cooking and some of her favourite treats.” All elements of this dessert are made inhouse and Mmabatho is particularly proud of the blueberry cheesecake ice cream that her mother has since given her stamp of approval
Emazulwini means “in the heavens” in isiZulu and is located in Makers Landing, Cruise Terminal in the V&A Waterfront.

Mmabatho Mogomotsi, who played Snowey in Yizo Yizo more than 20 years ago, is making her acting comeback with the new Showmax Original Outlaws
the Basotho queen pin of the largest cattle raiding syndicate in Lesotho
cattle-farming Biyela clan across the border in KwaZulu-Natal.
which set a record for the most first-day views of any drama on the streaming service in March 2023.
Showmax spoke to the acting legend about why Moretlo is the role she’s been thirsty for.
It’s a reality of stock-theft wars between communities in Lesotho and KZN
a reality for many who live in those areas
I’ve spoken to a few people who identify with the story
It’s a story where two families are at loggerheads over continued cattle theft
it’s a story of a mother being a mom and mothering her family just to stay afloat
Doing what she needs to do and doing what’s right by her
Moretlo is the matriarch of the Ts’eole family that belongs to the Basotho side of the story
Moretlo is your ordinary woman in the village but she’s got a twist about her
she will fight for her family by all means necessary
She would just put up a different personality and do what she needs to do at the time to survive
she would use her gun without thinking twice
at war she changes into something very different
I’m a mom who’s also laid back but draws the line
She reigns him in but lets go where necessary
So there’s a boundary that she exercises.
I’m not my children’s regular friend but they can come to me for anything
That’s the kind of mom that Leruo has in the story
So that’s the similarity between me and Moretlo
we do things I never thought I would do but always wanted to do
Some of them are a bit commanding and demanding
there’s an opportunity for body-doubles here and there
Most of all I have respect for the talent that you see and experience and the talent you don’t see behind the camera
It’s the puzzle coming together in the magic that is Outlaws
and that’s what the audience will stay glued to
Outlaws S1 is now streaming on Showmax

A recent report released by the Department of Water and Sanitation has found that the Mmabatho Waste Water Treatment Plant in North West, which Mahikeng residents get drinking water from, has major water quality issues
where technical site assessments are done at 1 or 2 systems in each water service district
reflects the conditions of the raw water and handling system
the water treatment plant as well as the delivery and distribution system
The Mmabatho Waste Water Treatment Plant showed only 48% microbiological compliance and the report found that there are no adequate measures in place to ensure compliance to drinking water quality and it holds a significant risk to the community
Locals such as Tshepo Kola say they rather buy purified water
“The taste of the water that we receive around our areas has a smell that is not quite OK
we prefer not to drink the municipality water
We rather opted to buy water from the shops.”
Many other residents share Kola’s sentiments
“Previously we used to use dam water or river water to drink
we no more use that because cholera is now here.”
“I prefer buying water because I don’t like the taste coming from the tap water
“Municipalities are not taking care of water treatment plants and then people are not feeling safe to drink tap water
not all residents can afford to buy purified water and for those who depend on water provided by the government
A word of advice boil your tap water before consuming it as a safety precaution
Tebogo Lekgethwane is the spokeperson for the North West Department of Health
“The department is quite aware of the fears of some of the communities about safe drinking water
especially in the area affected by cholera
there is nothing wrong to buy water in the shops
We encourage boiling water before it can be used
The department is also encouraging hygiene among our people
They need to always make sure that their toilets are cleaned with safe detergents or soap and wash their hands before preparing food.”
which is responsible for water provision in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District says the Mmabatho wastewater treatment plant is sitting at 98.49% microbiological compliance
though a letter seen by the SABC from the Water and Sanitation Department raises concern about non-compliance to microbiological and chemical determinants

South Africa’s Mmabatho Stadium is famous for its unusual design
which features elevated stands that don’t actually face the pitch but other stands
Mmabatho Stadium is often cited as an example of impractical architectural design
It was commissioned by Lucas Mangope’s government which ruled the Bophuthatswana Bantusan and designed by Israeli architect Israel Goodovitch and engineer Ben Abraham
They came up with an unconventional concept that went against pretty much every basic principle of stadium design
authorities apparently loved the idea and went ahead with the construction
it didn’t take long for people to realize that its weirdly elevated stands didn’t offer the best view of the action on the pitch and actually required them to turn their heads to the side in order to watch the match
close to South Africa’s border with Botswana
Mmabatho Stadium is the African nation’s fifth largest stadium
but it rarely sees any use these days because of its impractical design
It was the home of the Mmabatho Kicks of the now-defunct Bophuthatswana Professional Soccer League
The unusual design and poor viewing experience were the main reason that Mmabatho was snubbed during the 2010 FIFA World Cup both for official games and even as a training field
The only action it sees these days involves occasional charity matches and neutral ground games between South African soccer clubs
The 59,000-seat structure is most often described as “curious”
“strange” and even “bizarre”
but some actually view it as a work of art
and the fact that the stands are too far from the pitch make Mmabatho a poor stadium
its blatant lack of functionality has relegated this massive stadium to the rank of monument to a bygone era
Contemporary folk jazz act Sereetsi & The Natives released its latest studio recording titled Mmabatho on Friday
The gifted strummer broke onto the musical scene in 2015 with his debut album Four String confessions
Sereetsi and The Natives went straight to folklore stardom
In 2018 the group released Motoko with stand-out songs such as ‘Pasi pa nyolo’
In his follow-up album titled ‘Am Afrika’ in 2021 the band changed tact a bit
and the clap and tap rhythm remained the heartbeat of the album
and for the first time in his musical career he collaborated with other artists
It was an album that had a piece of everything with collaborators from Sweden
“It was a deliberate decision not to feature anyone on the first two albums
It’s important for one to first establish themselves,” said Sereetsi
Sereetsi noted comes with a lot of compromise as one has to accept other people’s ideas
The crafty wordsmith said his new album might also spring a few surprises on the listener as for the first time he has worked with two traditional artists MmaAusi and Kabelo Mogwe
“I’ve also collaborated with a rapper Mosako
something I’ve never done before,” he said
The artist noted that it is impossible to sound the same as his music documents influences and feelings of a particular era
“So expect a mixture of the old and the new
but I’m still playing the four strung guitar,” Sereetsi said
The legendary Mosako features on the frenetically paced Rranneu
which captures the stages of chasing a debt in three unique sonic movements
“I composed the song in three parts a’ la classical music
The idea was to capture the various emotional states one goes through chasing debts,” says Sereetsi
Mogwe from Culture Spears stars in Polei-boe
a modern day boy-hurts-girl-hurts-boy tale of poetic justice
The amazingly talented Mma Ausi brings her great form to Gae
which more or less champions the same theme as Polei-boe
The new 10-track album and the title track is a heartfelt tribute to Sereetsi’s wife Kagelelo Girlie Kemiso
Sereetsi says it’s important as an artist to be vulnerable and express oneself
“I’ve been doing this for close to 10 years
and it takes a certain type of character to put up with all the challenges
all the travelling I had to do over the years to build this brand,” explained Sereetsi in reference to his wife
“You need a partner who gives you stability
It is this stability that allows you to create
and for one to quit their job to pursue music
you need a partner who’ll tell you go on I got your back,” he said
Sereetsi said Mmabatho simply recognises the importance of his partner in making the musical brand
and also to recognise her leadership qualities hence the use of Mmabatho
I only have a song,” he added with a chuckle
the song is for everyone in a serious relationship and for wedded couples as well
strength and support of the women in our lives,” says Sereetsi

The Voice is a print and online newspaper based in Botswana founded in Francistown in 1993 as The Francistowner Extra
in 1999 it opened offices in the national capital
South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) has slammed the Peermont Group’s plan to transfer its gambling license from the Mahikeng based Mmabatho Palms Hotel, to Rustenburg
Peermont has already applied to the North West Board for its gambling business to be transferred
The request comes just five months after the Mmabatho Palms Hotel and Casino was destroyed by fire
In September last year part of the flagship Mmabatho Palms Hotel was destroyed by a fire
It has now emerged that the casino may never operate in Mahikeng again
The Bokone Bophirima Business Forum says removing the gambling license of the Mmabatho Palms Hotel will cripple Mahikeng’s economy
“We are not surprised about the decision they have taken
It’s like they are stripping away the economic potential of the capital city
So we are asking ourselves as to how is it going to affect the workers
why are they moving the license to Rustenburg
I mean if they are doing that it will be the end of us here in Mahikeng
Already things are bad so it will be the end of us,” says Katlego Rakuba
spokesperson of the Bokone Bophirima Business Forum
The North West Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Nick Setsetse also slammed the decision
“Only examples have been made in the past Molopo Sun lost their license and we all know what happened to Molopo Sun
it turned out into a white elephant so to speak
It turned into some student accommodation and I forsee that hotel unfortunately going the same route
If people are going to be shoving and pushing
wake up one evening and they want remove a license to a place that is already developed
The Peermont Group confirmed that it applied for its gambling license to be transferred from the Mmabatho Palms Hotel in Mahikeng – to a destination near the Waterfall Mall in Rustenburg
the group says it will continue with conference
food and beverage operations at Mmabatho Palms
“The staff employed at Mmabatho palms will have the first right of refusal to positions available at the Waterfall hotel and casino
The staff members employed at Mmabatho Palms who do not wish to relocate to Rustenburg will be accommodated at the remaining operations of Mmabatho Palms as much as this is possible
The majority of the remaining vacant positions will be recruited for within Peermont and with Rustenburg,” Nikki Evans explains
the Saccawu have slammed the decision all together
“They only received SMS’s last week Thursday
Now in such a very serious business there is nowhere where you can inform an employee through SMS
Therefore we are saying we are not confident as to some of the workers that have been spread across and what will happen to those workers who go to Rustenburg
Because if you are in a casino and you are in Mafikeng
if they want to relocate you completely your life is going to change,” Saccawu’s Angie Phetlhe
Police say their Preliminary Forensic Fire Scene Investigation Report found electrical malfunction as the most probable cause of the fire that gutted Mmabatho Palms last September

“What we are trying to achieve is inclusivity and it’s the perfect time for that
traditional African cuisine in South Africa was seen as something that couldn’t be fine dining but in the past two years
I have had the honour to meet a lot of young black creatives passionately sharing their food and stories”

Mmabatho Montsho is a rare breed — stunningly natural with a spellbinding mystique
And Montsho’s contribution to the arts is exactly that — greatly cherished
The actor/director recently helmed Desmond’s Not Here Anymore (aka Desmond)
which is causing a fair amount of buzz internationally
based on an award-winning screenplay by Lindiwe Suttle Müller-Westernhagen (daughter of veteran talk-show host Felicia Mabuza-Suttle) sees Montsho directing Hollywood maestro S Epatha Merkerson and Yolonda Ross
Yet despite making all the right Hollywood moves
asking if she will grace the cover of SMag
In the days that follow she’s eagerly involved in all the photo-shoot planning
she suggests via email that we play around with surrealist fashion as one of our style themes
That idea has to be scrapped at the last minute on the day of the shoot
She has flown from Cape Town to Joburg the day before specifically to take part in the fashion spread
where she’s working on a mysterious TV project
all I can get out of her is that she’s writing and directing for the production
a large pool of productions shoot in Cape Town
which is the premier film location in Africa
and Thuso Mbedu just filmed their movie The Woman King in the Mother City
agrees that her sister has always been a rare breed
“It is almost impossible to be around her and not be inspired by her grit
I think a lot of people would agree that she sets high standards for herself,” Refilwe says
She is not impressed by bigotry and doesn’t mind the cost of standing up for what is right and what she believes is fair.”
Montsho has also directed the films Joko Ya Hao and The Award Ceremony
She’s a role model for female filmmakers who doesn’t waste time preaching about the work — instead
she has shown countless times that women have every right to be behind the camera
She did not shy away from her passion for directing and writing
she has become an example for many South African young women who may have been afraid to pursue filmmaking.”
But does Montsho consider herself a role model
She chuckles and brushes it off when I ask her
The biggest takeaway during my tête-à-tête with Montsho is that being a writer comes first
above all the other skills she has mastered
It’s just before 9am and she’s getting ready for another day of location scouting for her mystery project
but at first believed she was terrible at it
we used to have those creative-writing projects
So let’s say they gave us an hour to complete it — it would take me 45 minutes trying to figure out what to say
then I had to write it in the last 15 minutes
I realised early on that writing is a skill and not just having a great idea,” she says
she pulled me aside to say she thought I had something and perhaps I should become a journalist
and directing at the New York Film Academy
That’s where she got the training in scriptwriting she’d yearned for and things fell into place for her
Even when she started directing back home (Your Move!
she always found herself in the writers’ room
Later a National Film and Video Foundation female-filmmaker project saw Montsho successfully write and direct The Groom’s Place. This encouraged her to write more scripts. From there she was invited to write for a local drama, and she eventually decided to get her MA in scriptwriting from Falmouth University
I’m sitting in front of my laptop,” Montsho says
“We are Black people that we can never divorce
It’s something I have to put to account even when I’m creating
So freedom is being able to live in the world as a human being and not as an ‘other’
There is something very freeing about loving something deeply
I don’t know if a person can fully pursue any freedom without a deep sense of love
Freedom is not an easy thing to have or to pursue — for me
Montsho was offered the opportunity of a lifetime — to direct Desmond
Suttle Müller-Westernhagen had sent her the script and treatment
Mmabatho thought it was brilliant and insisted that Lindiwe helm it instead
Suttle Müller-Westernhagen explained that the project had won the 2019 HollyShorts Screenwriting Competition and that was why she had created those treatments for the script
although she didn’t want to direct it herself
Montsho revisited the project with a different eye
“I fell in love with the sensitivity she brought to her short films The Award Ceremony and Joko
I knew she would be the best choice to tell my sexual-abuse story,” Suttle Müller-Westernhagen says
“One thing I learned for sure about Mmabatho is that she protects Black women and girls in her stories.”
The next hurdle was that Montsho had to fly to Seattle last July
where principal photography for the film took place amid lockdown travel restrictions
Montsho also worked extensively with Berlin-based director of photography Agnesh Pakozdi via Zoom
“I spent about two weeks trying to leave South Africa
‘I’m going to have to direct through Zoom.’ Luckily
I had to do my two weeks’ quarantine in Botswana
I don’t know how many flights I took before I ended up there
Montsho went straight to work as soon as she landed in the US
“I’ve never gotten on a set and had to shoot immediately
I met everyone and everything on the day of the shoot,” she recalls
“But it felt right and everything fell into place
There was such a harmony between everyone — you would have thought they’d known each other for years.”
Montsho was also not fazed by directing Hollywood bigwigs
Merkerson is currently appearing on Chicago Med and also won an Emmy for her long-running role in Law & Order
That’s why they are where they are. It’s about the work,” says Montsho
I love a direct person and we just clicked.”
The film is currently on a global film-festival run
and has already received an accolade for “best short film for change” at the Paris International Film Festival
Montsho is hoping the film will get its first local audience at a popular South African film festival in July
From there she’d love to do a public screening and get it on one of the streaming services
“It feels validating when you get seen by your colleagues
They don’t know me as the girl who used to be in a soapie
it’s purely [based on] the work,” she says
Many TV viewers fell for Montsho’s allure from her acting work
Garnering a large following for her role as Lumka Dlomo in Generations
But she doesn’t plan on making any acting appearances soon
But if I were to create or get offered an amazing role
but it’s not the apple of my eye,” she laughs
We joke about the difficult pronunciation of the French word
which refers to an artist with a unique style and approach
There is a side of me that enjoys collaborations
I love working on people’s brilliant ideas
coming in as a director or developing scripts for dramas
I want a body of work that speaks.”
