Good progress being made on Montagu pass (Dr1640) repair project (contract c1322.03)
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DoI) is making good progress completing permanent repairs to the Montagu Pass
“While the damage the road suffered is significant
the extended closure has given our team time to do a comprehensive analysis
The team responsible for the hydrological assessment determined that five of the 22 stormwater catchment areas are under capacity
and that this is one of the main causes of significant flood damage to the pass
with one such structure causing a full-width break,” said Tertuis Simmers
the Western Cape Government received additional funding through the National Disaster Management Grant which allowed the DoI to initiate the dedicated Western Cape Government Department of Infrastructure Flood Damage Repairs and Response Strategy across the worst-hit areas in the province - namely in the Garden Route
well-known engineering firm Zutari was appointed to provide professional engineering services for the repairs to the Montagu Pass and on-site assessments started in November 2024
including business representatives and heritage agencies
were involved to ensure alignment in order to mitigate the risk of delays
The project is subject to strict deadlines and processes to comply with national government funding conditions
the design scope of the project was approved
This is a crucial step because it allows the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) environmental application process to commence
The surveys that were received in early March 2025 are being processed to inform the detailed engineering design
This design is crucial to the NEMA environmental application which the department aims to submit to the applicable authorities by the end of March 2025
Given that the Montagu Pass is a heritage site
this may take between six and eight months and depends on the public participation and appeals process
anticipated if all goes according to plan without delays
that NEMA and other environmental authorisations should be received by late September 2025
This means that construction could commence in late October 2025
Current projections are that the project will take between eight and ten months from that point
the pass is expected to be fully opened by August 2026
This is a tentative milestone and is wholly dependent on the conditions described above being met in time
The current project scope includes the cleaning of existing drainage structures
blading of the existing roadway as well as repair/reconstruction of stone walls
This project scope is subject to further change during the detailed design phase.
the in-house maintenance methods have been reviewed and revised to align with heritage practices
which worked with us and approved the revised routine maintenance methods and activities
Currently it is envisaged that routine maintenance will be done under the supervision of the District Roads Engineer: Garden Route and Central Karoo
“This will go a long way to ensure that the Montagu Pass is maintained appropriately to improve the resilience of this important road asset to cope with future floods
pending the conclusion of a capital repairs/reinstatement/limited-improvement project,” said Minister Simmers
“I am aware of the significance of this route
Our teams are working as fast as they can to avoid any delays
We will keep the public informed on our progress as the project unfolds,” Minister Simmers concluded

Wainwright documents the family’s descent by investigating the life of the generation who lost Kimbolton: namely, Viscount ‘Mandy’ Mandeville (also known as Alexander George Francis Drogo Montagu) and his Australian wife, Nell. Born in 1902, Mandy was the son of William, 9th Duke of Manchester, and Helena Keith-Falconer, the daughter of a wealthy American railway and oil magnate.

Mandy’s birth was heralded with national celebrations: church bells rang up and down England and Ireland

With Kimbolton gone, Mandy and Nell – by now the Duke and Duchess of Manchester – moved to Kenya, reliant on trust funds from Mandy’s mother and grandmother. When the early 1960s brought tragedy in the form of Nell’s eye cancer diagnosis, the pair emigrated to San Francisco (much to the delight of the local press). The Duchess of Manchester died in 1966, with her husband of 40 years and their son, Kim, by her side.

GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - The Montagu Pass is going to be restored to its former glory
The good news was officially announced at the Toll House on Monday 17 March
by a group of relieved locals who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to secure the future of the pass
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DoI) has made R80m available from a national disaster management grant it had received in October 2024
for flood damage repairs in the worst-hit areas in the province.
A process was then put into motion to have the damage in the pass assessed and engineering surveys done
The engineering firm Zutari was appointed to provide the professional engineering services for the repairs
and it started with its assessments in November
Its design scope was approved at the end of February and the environmental application process is now under way
Infrastructure Minister Tertuis Simmers said the engineering surveys were received in early March and are being processed for a detailed engineering design.
The aim is to submit the environmental application to the relevant authorities by the end of March
"Given that the Montagu Pass is a heritage site
the approvals may take between six and eight months and depend on the public participation and appeals process
the environmental authorisations should be received by late September
The estimated time of completion of the project is between eight and 10 months from that point
Simmers cautioned that the target of reopening the road by August 2026 is a "tentative milestone" dependent on the various conditions being met in time
Maintenance to align with heritage practices
Simmers also gave the assurance that the in-house maintenance methods for the pass have been revised with the help of Heritage Western Cape
routine maintenance will be done under the supervision of the Garden Route and Central Karoo district roads engineer
He said the Garden Route District Municipality
as the road maintenance agency for the DoI
had done some repairs after the initial flood that had not been in accordance with the historic design of the pass
which affected its capacity to handle heavy downpours.
"The revised maintenance methods will go a long way to ensure the resilience of the pass is improved to cope with future floods."
The stone wall has crumbled away in places
says the restoration of the Montagu Pass is a huge step forward for the whole of the Southern Cape
He says the pass is an economic asset and a tourist attraction that indirectly creates work
It is also an example of innovation and a proclaimed heritage site
which means the authorities are legally bound to maintain it.
"The golden rule here will be to balance the authenticity of the pass with its functional and achievable maintenance
George Heritage Trust chairperson Willie-John van Niekerk says the trust and the Van der Stel Foundation have been campaigning the authorities for several years to apply the appropriate maintenance methods in the pass to ensure its survival
Following floods in the Western Cape these past three years
it became uncertain if the pass would ever be restored
as funds for flood-damaged roads in the province had to be directed towards priority routes
It was through the ongoing efforts of the trust and the foundation that the authorities were continually engaged regarding the significance of the pass and the need for its restoration.Their hands were strengthened when Theo Adams
George Business Chamber director and owner of Herold Meander
and Agri Western Cape CEO Jannie Strydom also threw in their weight.
Strydom says Agri Western Cape was asked by their local farm association to co-ordinate the efforts to fast-track repairs to the pass.
"We organised a meeting with Western Cape Agriculture Minister Ivan Meyer
in which the AHi [Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut] and business chamber were also involved
and where we received feedback from the provincial Department of Infrastructure.
"We were pleasantly surprised to learn how far the process had progressed
We thank each and every one who drove this campaign from the beginning."
George Business Chamber chairperson Johannes Jumat says they are very excited for the pass to resume its position in society to the benefit of the region and its business
the pass will reopen to traffic in August 2026

GEORGE NEWS - When there is a call for help
George's volunteers and rescue services are always willing to answer - at home or away
went missing on Saturday 30 November in the outskirts of Montagu and his family reached out for help
members of the George Community Police Forum (CPF)
members of National Crime Assist (NCA) in Hermanus
and community members all jumped in to help.
While some teams were working hard on the ground
Alton had to work on a farm between Ladismith and Montagu but got lost in the mountains of the Little Karoo
or medication when his Ford Bantam bakkie got stuck in a sandy ditch in what felt to him like the middle of nowhere
he was forced to leave the vehicle and search for help
he was far from civilisation and had no cellphone coverage where he was
When he didn't come home on Saturday and his family couldn't reach him
they reported him missing to the Montagu police.
"On Sunday we were pushing them to start the search
That's when my husband contacted National Crime Assist (NCA)," says Alton's daughter
According to George CPF's Timothy Luff
they saw a request for assistance on a WhatsApp group on Monday and mobilised emergency services and volunteers from George to assist
a sniffer dog from Sanbona Wildlife Reserve
that led the rescue team to Alton on Monday 2 December
It is believed that because of disorientation due to severe dehydration
He was found about 700m away from his bakkie
Alton was found in a ravine in a very remote area
He was in critical condition - severely sunburnt
He was stabilised and airlifted to George Hospital
He has since been discharged and is now recovering at home in Hermanus
The dog who found Alton and members of Sanbona's K9 unit with emergency services at Alton's side
contacted them on Sunday 1 December asking for help to look for his father-in-law
This was when their Critical Cases team registered a project and set the wheels in motion
who led the search for the rest of the operation
"The local community worked through all roads between the Ouberg Pass and Anysberg," says Ras
Sanbona also assisted with a thermal drone
A commercial drone was also used during the search
we checked all cameras in the area and Navic informed us that the vehicle was picked up on Friday at 09:19 on an LPR camera near Anysberg and immediately turned back
This point was near the farm," says Ras
the search was narrowed down to the Anysberg area where Alton's vehicle was found in the field on Monday at around 14:00.
About two hours later he was tracked down by one of Sanbona's sniffer dogs and K9 unit
Part of the rescue team attending to Alton
Alton's bakkie got stuck in a sandy ditch
"My dad said he would be home after lunch on Saturday," says Fasen
my friend and I drove to go look for him on Saturday night
Unfortunately not knowing the area we had to return home.
"I want special thanks sent to Dennis Ras of NCA
Greg the paramedic who assisted my dad on the ground
and especially the doggy who found my dad.
"A heartfelt thanks to absolutely everyone who was part of this rescue mission and those who are still assisting us in retrieving the bakkie."
Alton says his bakkie got stuck at about noon on Saturday
it was just a comedy of errors," he says
"The worst part was sitting up all night trying to keep myself warm
By Sunday he could feel his body weakening and on Monday he found a tree under which he lay down to get out of the sun.
Your mind plays games with you under those circumstances," he says
"I want to thank every single person who helped on the ground or behind the scenes
Tim and Rupert of George CPF were also champions when I arrived at George Hospital
They stayed with me all the time and brought me a Coke

John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich, passed away on 1 February 2025
surrounded by his family at their home at Mapperton
said: ‘His career was in overseas development

Viscount Hinchingbrooke will inherit the title of Earl of Sandwich
will be styled as the Countess of Sandwich
Julie Montagu is a force to be reckoned with
a family crisis or the ominous threat of poverty
Julie Montagu calls Mapperton House, ‘the finest manor in Britain’, home
A year later they were married at Mapperton, Julie in the Montagu tiara, but few beyond the family knew that Luke, now 50, had spent 15 years addicted to antidepressants. He had reportedly first been prescribed them as a 19-year-old student, despite not being depressed, he had simply felt unwell after reacting badly to a general anaesthetic for a sinus operation. He continued to be prescribed stronger and stronger doses of different drugs and when he tried to withdraw would get very unwell.
Patsy Ferran, an Olivier-award-winning ‘acting wizard’ according to former co-star Paul Mescal, is one of the greatest actors of her generation. As she graces our screens as Jane Austen in the BBC's newest period drama Miss Austen, revisit this feature from 2023, when Tatler’s deputy features editor Annabel Sampson caught up with her on dialect lessons, impromptu – and unwelcome – fangirl moments on stage and following in the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn
A doctor advised that he go cold turkey
coming off the prescribed drugs in absolute (despite withdrawal being recommended to take place over months
He became increasingly unwell; the Times writes in an interview with Julie: ‘Overnight Luke had burning pain all over his body and was left so disorientated physically and mentally that he was often unable to walk or speak.’
Luke was no longer able to do his job as director of the Met Film School
so Julie was forced to step up as his carer and as the family breadwinner
She now campaigns for greater awareness of the issue
The process the couple underwent was both humbling and painful
Luke’s condition very slowly improved and in 2015 he won a £1.35 million out-of-court settlement against the doctor who had advised the sleeping pills withdrawal
which covered loss of earnings and legal fees
nutritionist and mindfulness guru – Julie Montagu led yoga classes from Mapperton's orangery during the pandemic
Julie tells the Times that once news circulated that Luke would be taking over Mapperton, old friends who had shunned the couple were quick to get in touch, but Julie deleted their texts. In the interview she said: ‘Life is too short to surround yourself with people who don’t share the same values’.
Julie’s career has come into its own. Anyone who follows her on Instagram will be enjoying the fruits of her labour. Now a qualified yoga teacher, nutritionist and mindfulness guru, she is considered one of London’s top choices. As the practice in London is on pause in the midst of corona Britain, Julie has taken to live yoga classes and is teaching from Mapperton’s splendid orangery.
Julie Montagu is a guiding light for hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers
given the success fronting the series An American Aristocrat’s Guide to Great Estates on the Smithsonian Channel and that has a solid US following
This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from
the family has also been distributing meals prepared in the café kitchens to at risk locals
Julie is reportedly rushed off her feet between cooking for the family
cooking meals for vulnerable locals and all her other endeavours
it seems that Montagu has managed to utilise her sizable following to propel Mapperton and her family ever upwards in this unstable period
and Tatler looks forward to her news from Mapperton

The company’s executive management team will invest alongside Montagu
which has a track record in fund administration technology investments
Geneva-based Temenos said the sale aligns with its broader strategy to streamline its product portfolio and focus on three key growth areas: strengthening its “best of suite” offering
The divestment follows the company’s updated strategic plan
outlined at its Capital Markets Day in November 2024
Multifonds was highly commended at the Funds Europe Awards in November 2024
recognising its excellence in fund administration technology
The Swiss banking software firm will provide further details on the financial impact of the transaction when it announces its Q4 and full-year 2024 results on February 18
The sale marks a significant shift for Temenos as it refocuses on its core banking software business while Multifonds enters a new growth phase under private equity ownership

It now expects annual recurring revenue to reach at least $1.2 billion in its 2028 financial year

Sun 2 Feb 2025 07.45 CETShareWhat’s an average Sunday
which are in the squash family and a bit phallic
It’s a really peaceful thing to do and it calms me.Is it hard to get an allotment
One of my big regrets is that I didn’t do it with my kids
they look at me as if I’m a mad woman when I say I’m going down to the allotment
But it’s full of young couples with young children
There’s a lady who does French squashes in the most extraordinary shapes
and someone else who has a magical bottomless pit of potatoes
My friend Caroline sorts out our logistics
She’s always getting gets me to build structures and hang nets to stop the birds eating all the cavolo nero.Have you got a shed
If a rake slips slightly on to someone else’s side
It’s wonderful on a Sunday morning to unlock the gate to the secret garden and see the wonder of what’s growing
(Why hasn’t anyone written a sitcom about an allotment
I might one day.) On the way home I like to steal into different churches.Such as
On Christmas Day I went into the Russian Orthodox Church up the road
It was one of the most magical experiences of my life
or I might just have my mates round and we’ll get all horrendously drunk
