South Africa (16 April 2025) — When people go above and beyond for their animals
Despite the heavy rains and consequential water-logged environments that the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands has felt recently
the Mpophomeni kids were undeterred in getting their animals to dog school or to veterinary care at local non-profit
Because most of these young dog owners make the trek to Funda Nenja on foot
dealing with the water-impacted surroundings is no summer stroll
To observe children expressing this level of commitment to their pets is an unspoken trophy of great compassion
the second term of dog school continued as per usual (much to the delight of dogs who love playing in the mud)
With commitment like this in these owners’ toolkits
we sense a bright future for Mpophomeni’s animals
A mission in which people and paws are both taken into consideration
Funda Nenja’s is a unique approach to animal welfare
Instead of focusing solely on the animals in question
the team have a holistic approach that aims to improve the resources people need to become animal heroes
A big portion of the Funda Nenja approach focuses on the youth. Funda Nenja’s dog training initiative teaches children how to care for their animals
sharing important information and practical skills all dog owners should know
compassion and patience are taught along with other life skills as part of the project’s extension School Education Programme
this kind of knowledge doesn’t just apply to time with an animal
it ripples across multiple streams of interactions
This is the beauty of lessons like those of compassion—they apply far beyond the classroom
Recently, a Kids Workshop highlighted the impact of the organisation on both the children and community, which you can read about here.

South Africa (15 January 2025) – Many townships and underserved communities are characterised by various social ills and challenges
there are beacons of hope like Funda Nenja that carry out incredible work at the heart of such areas
nurturing compassion and bringing welfare to previously mistreated dogs
As some community members can attest, Funda Nenja has shifted the mindset of many Mpophomeni residents
to see dogs as pets that are worthy of care and attention
as well as friends that can truly fulfil their lives
a lack of compassion is symptomatic of anti-social and violent behaviour
But through bonding and building relationships with dogs at the Funda Nenja Dog School Programme
volunteers have discovered how these are therapeutic processes which nurture kindness and empathy
in addition to releasing oxytocin – the love hormone – in their learners
Vamokuhle Mhlongo a learner who joined the dog school programme last year in August
said that since joining Funda Nenja she has learnt a lot about dogs and animal welfare
noting that it was wrong to chain a dog or allow them to get involved in fights as it is a violation animal rights
“Our education programmes help Mpophomeni dog owners like Vamokuhle to be responsible and caring
thus ensuring a good quality of life for their canine companions
We can’t make the world a perfect place
“We look forward to reopening our dog school on Friday
17 January and helping young people learn how to be kind to their dogs and enjoy the magic of a loving relationship with their four-legged companions,” the organisation said

The travelling of international and local tourists to the township tourism sites is encouraging
that was what the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Tourism
told members of the Zulu Mpophomeni Tourism Experience at Mpophomeni Township in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) recently during the committee’s oversight visit programme in KZN
to have tour buses coming here bringing tourists
giving them a valuable experience of sharing our culture with them.” He said that is what township tourism is about
and he called for its replication in every township in the country
Mr Mahumapelo said he was very happy to see the infrastructure of the Zulu Mpophomeni Tourism Experience well maintained and become an economic hub for the local community members who provide a variety of services
Mr Frank Mchunu of the Zulu Mpophomeni Tourism Experience which is a community based tourism organisation
spoke passionately about the centre he said is the tourist hub in the township of Mpophomeni
was once rife with killings during apartheid with Members of the committee
he spoke of the Wall of Reconciliation just further down in the township
where the names of 120 people who died in the fight against apartheid are inscribed on the wall
during apartheid many people died and they must be remembered.” he said
Mr Mchunu welcomed members of the committee at the centre
Mr Mchunu thought this centre would collapse without the necessary help from government as there is decline in the number of tourist visits
the visit of the committee to the centre has restored Mr Mchunu’s hope for the future of the centre
As part of the “Triple RRR” approach of rebranding
repositioning and renewal of the economy through tourism
the committee is focusing on reviving existing tourist nodes in villages
The township or cultural centres are meant to give the international or domestic tourists a taste of authentic African culture by sharing with them the local cuisine
poetry and accommodation in homes of the local people living in the townships.
Members of Zulu Mpophomeni Tourism Experience include a variety of female-owned and managed craft cooperatives
The centre has won a number of awards and wants to be the best sustainable
independent community-owned tourism organisation in the country
It has provided opportunities for members of its community to become entrepreneurs in the tourism sector from tour operators/guides to B&B owners
Parliament will play a crucial oversight role in ensuring that South Africa’s commitments during its G20 presidency are implemented effectively and aligned with national priorities like economic growth

South Africa (21 February 2025) – Animal welfare is the very reason Funda Nenja exists and runs various educational and outreach programmes that inspire and encourage Mpophomeni community members to value their dogs
One way they do this is through the Funda Nenja Dog Food Discount Programme which helps dog owners receive pet food at a lowered price by following a simple process that ensures they’re doing their part in being responsible owners
To qualify to purchase a bag of discounted dog food
an owner has to first present their dog for a veterinary check-up at Funda Nenja’s clinic
Dr Danie runs the busy Friday afternoon veterinary clinic with quiet
calm efficiency assisted by the dog school team
This pop-up clinic is a vital resource for the Mpophomeni community
the owner must then commit to taking advantage of the organisation’s free sterilisation service within three months
Each family is eligible for one bag of discounted food per month and must present their record card at each purchase to track their purchases
Funda Nenja follows a policy of encouraging responsible dog ownership
which includes a small charge for all items on offer at its pop-up shop where possible
while times may be tough for many of us feeling the financial pinch
Funda Nenja is doing its part to look out for its community by providing nourishing pet food at a fraction of the price while ensuring pet owners prioritise their furry companions’ overall well-being

Sipho Hlomuka has dispatched disaster management teams to the Mpophomeni township following heavy rains coupled with hail that struck a number of houses and severely damaged a petrol station
which collapsed and damaged four cars and injured two people who were rushed to the nearest hospital
Disaster Management teams have been dispatched by the department to the affected areas to assess the extent of the damage
Hlomuka has continued to urge residents to exercise extreme caution as inclement weather conditions continue to pose a serious danger to human life
the province has experienced a number of incidents
which have cost human lives and cause millions of rands worth of damage

Mpophomeni residents have threatened to block the N3 highway should uMngeni Municipality persist with its decision to conduct meter audits before repairing a damaged transformer in the township
Protests started on Friday afternoon by a group of people in Mpophomeni and resumed on Tuesday morning.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
protesters burned tires on the R617 but some of the taxis and cars were initially allowed to pass through
A security company in the area confirmed that the R617 and Mandela Highway were blocked
About 150 households from the Japan and Korea sections of Mpophomeni township have been without electricity since last Tuesday after a transformer in the area blew up
The municipality blamed this on overloading due to illegal connections in Mpophomeni
The community then started protesting when uMngeni Municipality decided to conduct a meter audit before repairing the transformer
Chris Pappas said the municipality was incurring what would be known as “irregular expenditure” due to this protest
“This is because we are having to deploy more security and hire vehicles for our traffic police as measures to increase our ability to respond
We are not able to go through the usual procurement mechanism due to time constraints and the emergency situation
We will disclose full expenditure once the situation returns to normal,” said Pappas
Meanwhile, uMngeni offices were closed on Tuesday after the protesters stormed the municipal headquarters in Howick on Monday, blocking the gates and demanding to be addressed by Pappas.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
A group of Mpophomeni residents took to the streets on Saturday and Sunday to protest against the meter audit
some of the residents attempted to fix the transformer but they caused even more damage to it
The municipality said a transformer and electricians were available but the electricity would only be restored once a meter audit has been conducted
The residents first blocked the R617 road before they made their way to the municipal offices on Monday
demanding their electricity be restored and for Pappas to address them
They tried to force their way into the municipal offices but were removed by heavily armed police officers
Representatives of the disgruntled community met with the municipal officials but the engagement apparently reached a deadlock
The community then went and blocked Main Road
Pappas confirmed that a group of protesters came to the municipality and demanded to see him
He said he refused to address the mob because this would have further encouraged illegal behaviour
He proposed that the protesters select 10 members to represent them in a meeting
He said after trying to meet on an amicable middle ground
the representatives walked out of the meeting
“Each transformer costs about R150 000. To replace the transformer without an audit would lead to further wasteful expenditure.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
“The protesters then started to break the gate to the municipal offices. Public Order Police then took action to stop the vandalism,” he said.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
on Saturday a municipal contractor’s vehicle was damaged and his employees were also held hostage while they were trying to repair the electricity infrastructure
A video posted by Pappas on his Facebook page showed the vehicle with a broken windscreen
He said staff also suffered shock from the incident
Police were called but motorists were still unable to access the blocked road which caused a traffic jam
one of the protesters said the community would not stop protesting until their electricity connections are restored
“We want power to be restored and then the municipality can start with their audit
Even those audits are unfair because the municipality is well aware that people in the area are not employed and they can’t afford to pay for electricity
“Life is really difficult without electricity, some old sick people need warm water for bathing and also cooking. There are a lot of people who have connected illegally in this municipality, but we are targeted and we won’t allow that.”advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
they said they would block the N3 soon until their plight is heard by national government
Pappas said charges will be laid against those who have been vandalising property as well as those instigating the violence
He said the municipality has proof that some of these people are ward councillors
Pappas issued a statement on Tuesday morning saying the municipality was planning to go to court to compel the public order policing unit to act.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
“If they fail to do so we will hold them to costs and damages for not doing enough to intervene if necessary,” said Pappas
we are only restoring electricity to high loss areas once the residents allow us to do meter audits which we are entitled to do
We will only fix the transformer once we have managed to access the majority of residents in the area to audit their meters,” said Pappas
believes the protest was more political than about electricity
“The fact that my ward is an ANC-led ward in a DA municipality is also a problem. When the mayor wanted to speak to people about the indigent list, he was blocked. It’s like someone is trying to make this place ungovernable,” said the resident.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
He said even though people can register for the free electricity units
people will continue to steal because many do not have money to pay for municipal services
Other residents said the protest will continue until the mayor addresses them and restores their electricity
said he was called by residents on Saturday who told him they wanted electricity to be restored
We tried to speak to the residents as councillors but they said they wanted the mayor to address them
we heard he didn’t want to address them,” said Mthalane

uMngeni mayor Chris Pappas wrote: “I would like to advise all businesses in the Howick and Merrivale area to please consider closing for the rest of the day
This is to avoid any potential injury or loss
Disconnected Mpophomeni residents stage protests over electricity meter audits
A voice recording by Pappas made the rounds on social media on Monday
in which he said the protest was no longer about service delivery but was a politically motivated strike
“We have been receiving information of ANC branch meetings where chairpersons and branch secretaries discuss this issue
We have evidence of councillors transporting people to the municipality as well as ANC-branded vehicles supporting the protest,” said Pappas in the recording
He said it was clear the protest was no longer about people who had no electricity
adding that disciplinary action would be taken against councillors who were alleged to have been instigating the protest
One resident, who asked not to be named, denied there was any political influence on the protest. He said they were joined on Monday by members of the ANC Youth League who had been at its regional elective conference in Mooi River over the weekend.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
“They were on their way back from Mooi River and drove past Howick to find out what was happening with the protest
That was it and it doesn’t mean there was any interference
The mayor is now using this as an excuse,” said the resident
He said residents had chosen 10 members to speak to the municipality and they did not include members of the ward committee or councillors
“There is nothing wrong with the transformer at this moment
The municipality’s contractors cut off a cable connecting the electricity poles to the transformer
They are now calling for an audit before they will fix the transformer,” the resident alleged
Pappas addressed the protesters at the entrance to Mphopomeni on Tuesday
we have the infrastructure and we want to restore electricity
but we need to conduct a meter audit first,” Pappas told The Witness
He said there were two groups from the protest
which included about 70 residents who are currently without electricity
Those affected told him they wanted the municipality to do the audit and fix the transformer
while the other group wanted the transformer fixed first
Pappas said the audit would take about eight hours and at least four to repair the transformer
“The longer people keep going with this protest
the longer they’ll stay without electricity
But this is really a small issue that could be addressed very quickly,” he added
After the briefing a group blocked the entrance to Howick where there was a large police and security presence.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove adsadvertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
The ANC in the Moses Mabhida Region called on Pappas to desist from playing politics with serious issues affecting people and conducting witch hunts to lay blame elsewhere
Regional spokesperson Njabulo Mtolo said in a statement: “The ANC in the Moses Mabhida Region is annoyed
who has chosen to deflect blame from the mess that his municipality created… This matter requires urgent attention to avoid further escalation
as frustration is propagating by the day.”
He condemned the use of violence and the destruction of property
The DA said the protests were orchestrated by the ANC
DA KwaZulu-Natal leader Francois Rodgers said they had seen photographic evidence of an ANC vehicle that was part of the protest and a video of ANC members handing out food parcels to the protesters
services in the municipality have been brought to a standstill… It is infuriating that the ANC does not want to accept defeat and would rather disrupt service delivery out of their desperate need for power,” said Rodgers
The party would be writing to KZN premier Sihle Zikalala in his capacity as the ANC’s provincial chairperson to request that he gets his comrades in line.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
a truck was burnt on the R617 near Mpophomeni close to the Sasol garage
The truck had been travelling towards Merrivale
“Emergency services arrived while one trailer was burning. We managed to separate the burning trailer from the rest of the truck,” said one source.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
members of the POP had dispersed the crowd and other emergency services were still monitoring the scene
Pappas said there were also threats to other community facilities
First published by The Witness
Since the DA took over running this municipality earlier this year things have got SO much better with service delivery
Whilst there could have been the temptation to supply services quickly to their DA supporters strongholds
the Mayor and his team have been scrupulous in treating everyone equitably
What the ANC and their supporters really fear is the fact that those suspected of corruption have been suspended
Audits have been done on suspect contracts and those contracts have been terminated
When you have rampant electricity theft you have to do audits
At present those who do pay their rates timeously are subsidising the thieves
The municipality is providing electricity and rates free of charge to those earning less than R5000 per month
All of the protestations from the ANC of political points scoring is in itself an attempt at political points scoring
Services in uMngeni’s Howick and Mpophomeni were disrupted this week as residents clashed with the municipality over the provision of electricity
On Thursday, the situation remained tense but residents returned to the municipal offices seeking services or renewing licences.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
The protests coincided with the first anniversary of the July riots
NGOs and residents as they feared that it would spark a repeat of last year’s looting and destruction
the Mpophomeni Mall and many other local businesses shut their doors
Tensions escalated last week when one of the transformers in Mpophomeni Township’s Ward 11
Residents of Mpophomeni closed off Howick after being without electricity since last week Tuesday due to a blown transformer
Umngeni mayor Christopher Papas addressed the protesters
On Sunday morning, residents blocked the R617 highway past the township, which heads to southern KZN towns such as Underberg
Residents had demanded to meet with mayor Chris Pappas, who was installed in November 2021, when the DA made a clean sweep in the municipality, gaining its first KZN municipality
The DA took 47% of the vote in the local government elections, while the ANC – which was previously in charge of the municipality – only managed 39%. The DA also won 13 of the Umngeni Municipality’s 25 council seats.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Pappas has insisted that the transformer would only be fixed once an audit has been conducted on how many residents in Korea were paying for electricity
He wants illegal connections to be switched off
when it was agreed that the broken transformer would be fixed while the connection audit is conducted
the ANC in the Moses Mabhida region claimed that the electricity issues and protests proved that Pappas and the DA failed to service poor black residents
say the ANC is inciting residents to protest violently
Residents of Korea township in Mpophomeni near Howick hope their electricity problem will be sorted after a new transformer was installed on 14 July 2022
When Daily Maverick visited Ward 11 on Thursday morning
were on the electricity poles and conducting the audit
Members of the local community were also there to ensure that nobody harms those who are conducting the audit

We don’t care who is in charge of the municipality
But many community members who had their food rotting in fridges because of the unexplained electricity cut-offs
were further angered when the mayor refused to address them,” she said
said community members were forced to protest after being without power for almost seven days
“Now that the electricity has been restored
They are also allowing the electricity audit to continue
I think this protest would not have been necessary had the mayor and the municipality handled this matter with care,” he said
a resident of Korea township in Mpophomeni in the KZN Midlands
said angry community members had marched to his house twice
“We are relieved that this matter has been resolved. It was a nightmare that we all, including the municipality, the councillors and the community, could have handled better,” he said.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
The protest had an impact beyond the uMngeni Municipality
as neighbouring towns said they were blockaded for days due to the protest
Russell Suchet, co-founder of the Sani Lodge Backpackers in southern Drakensberg, said the R617 road is a lifeline for residents as it connects them to hospital, shopping or other businesses.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
“Underberg and surrounding areas are reliant on this road
When it is closed it has a negative impact on the whole area
our guests… are affected because they have to take alternative routes and they don’t know this area
This has affected us every time that the road is closed due to protests in Mpophomeni over the past few years,” he said
the ANC’s Moses Mabhida regional spokesman
“The DA says that the main instigator for the chaos in Mpophomeni is the ANC
particularly through its reckless and arrogant mayor
The failure of the mayor to address the genuine grievances of our people led to this situation to be where it is,” he claimed
Pappas, though, was adamant that the ANC was to blame, saying the party has not come to terms with losing the municipality and was now using every opportunity to cause chaos. He said the ANC loathed what his administration has achieved since taking over eight months ago.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
“We found a municipality that was in severe distress. Financially, the municipality was barely paying salaries. We were either going to default on paying salaries or on paying Eskom [for electricity]. We were drawing money from core service issues to pay those things. There was a severe lack of leadership, an organisation that was rudderless with no direction.
“The ANC doesn’t know how to be an opposition; all they know is how to disturb and destroy. They need to find their voice and find their role as an opposition to ensure that government works,” he said, adding that the opposition’s role is to ensure that the governing party is accountable and doesn’t become complacent. DM
Who do YOU believe? I certainly believe Chris Pappas.
Meantime…. How long does it take for a comment to get through the bureaucracy to get published? As they say, just asking.
The Mpophomeni Shopping Centre was vandalised and looted during last week’s unrest
DURBAN - Property developer Kobus Marais from Howick says it will take almost a year for the Mpophomeni Shopping Centre to be repaired to full functionality following the massive looting experienced in KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng last week
a township outside Howick in the KZN Midlands
was one of the hardest hit with its only shopping mall left in ruins
On August 13 the shopping mall would have celebrated its first year anniversary
“It is quite sad that what should have been a day of celebration in a few weeks will just be about reflecting on the ruins of what used to be a mall,” said Marais
the property developer said he was determined to rebuild the mall
He reflected on how the mall had been built with massive assistance from the locals who had contributed with various skills ensuring that more than half of the labour was from Mpophomeni
“That is why I do not believe that the locals could have done this
to something that they literally built,” Marais said
While the looting had been expected once the riots started
the developer said he had been disappointed with the destruction of property
which meant that they would have to start from scratch as the building structure had been ruined beyond repairs
Many residents have since taken to social media to vent their frustrations at the destruction of the mall
we have been able to save on transport when going shopping
With this now we have to go to Pietermaritzburg to buy groceries
this is really unfair,” said one resident from a Facebook group
According to uMngeni Municipality cleaning up of Howick and its surrounding areas is an on-going process and it will take a while for the area to be back to its former self
He was gunned down in Mpophomeni township on Tuesday night.
In a statement, the party’s provincial leader Francois Rodgers said the exact circumstances around Ndlovu’s death were unknown.
The Midlands municipality is the sole council governed by the party in the province. It had been previously governed by the ANC.
Ndlovu had previously lead the caucus in Mooi Mpofana before moving to uMngeni council.
“We urge the police to bring the killers of Ndlovu to book without delay,” said Rodgers.
It was understood that Midlands EMS Howick advanced life support paramedics, along with two Midlands EMS ambulances, were dispatched to the Mpophomeni area after reports of the shooting.
Paramedics arrived to find that Ndlovu had numerous gunshot wounds.
