to become provincial players for the Limpopo Impalas He is thankful to the organisers of the tournament for giving his team hope “The growth of the girls is a touching story,” he said “They went through a lot and cricket gave them hope especially coming from disadvantaged backgrounds But that never stopped these girls from breaking boundaries “Some have received provincial colours while one made the last 22 for the SAu19 T20 World Cup squad The finals feature the best schools and hubs in the country and we are grateful to be a part of the final phase,” he said The team will be banking on The Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality has refuted allegations by a group of residents in Nkowankowa, regarding the employment of Expanded Public Works Programme workers that are currently working on two projects. Last week, the group raised a dispute around the projects valued at a total R2 million, one being the construction of an ablution block and storage facility at the driving license testing ground and the other, the renovation of home affairs offices. The group is alleging that the municipality is not following proper procedures in hiring workers, claiming that the municipality only employs its own preferred people. But municipal spokesperson Neville Ndlala says the allegations are just part of the group’s concerted efforts to discredit the municipality by continuously making baseless accusations on service delivery issues and even mobilizing community members. Ndlala says the municipality has a database which can be accessed on their website and social media platforms, where community members can register for EPWP opportunities and proper processes are followed when selecting suitable candidates. NKOWANKOWA: The community of Nkowankowa and surrounding areas has gathered at Tivumbeni College this morning for the final send-off of slain nurse Mihloti Faith Shikhibana. The 40-year-old was allegedly stabbed with a sharp object by her ex-boyfriend in Nkowankowa on Easter Monday. The alleged perpetrator, Victor Hlayisani Shivambu, fled the scene and was later found hanging from a tree at the Nkowankowa Industrial Area on Thursday afternoon. At the time of her death, Shikhibana was employed as a nurse at Mavambe Secure Care Centre, where she worked alongside her ex-boyfriend. Eskom Mopani has assured angry residents of Nkowankowa and surrounding areas that work to resolve the fault at the substation, which has led to residents experiencing extended hours of load reduction, is currently at an advanced stage. The residents embarked on a shutdown on Monday, closing the R36 road, to express frustration over the implementation of load rotation in addition to the load reduction schedule, as well as the ongoing water challenges. While residents have been experiencing load reduction for about a year now, the situation has been made worse by the implementation of load rotation, wherein an extra hour is added to the two hours of load reduction, due to a damaged transformer. Speaking to Capricorn FM News after a meeting by Eskom officials on Monday, Eskom’s customer service manager in Mopani Brian Ndubane indicated that the extent of the damage at the substation necessitated the involvement of specialists to address it. Ndubane has further called for calm among residents, saying they expect the load rotation to end within the next few days. NKOWANKOWA– Hlulani Kekana, a 33-year-old man from Nkowankowa Location, has gone missing after leaving his home on November 23, 2024, following a heated argument with his brother. His family is extremely concerned, and the Ritavi Police have launched an investigation into his disappearance. According to Nkateko Patience Mhangwana, a relative of Kekana, the incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, November 23, when the two siblings had a disagreement. During the argument, Kekana reportedly expressed feeling unloved by his brother, which led to him packing his belongings into a bag and leaving their home. He allegedly told his brother that he was leaving because he felt unloved. Since that day, there has been no contact with Kekana, and his whereabouts remain unknown. When he left, he was wearing a maroon and grey hoodie, grey trousers, and black push-in shoes. The Nkowankowa Police are urging anyone with information regarding Kekana’s whereabouts to come forward. Authorities are particularly concerned for his well-being and are requesting the public’s assistance in locating him. Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigating Officer DWO Phakula Kenneth at 073 161 1306, or SAPS Ritavi at 079 890 6460. The Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality has clarified that Eskom took the decision to implement load reduction in Nkowankowa Section A and many other areas in the municipality due to the growing culture of non-payment of services and illegal connections in these areas. This follows numerous complaints from angry residents in Nkowankowa Section A who have had to go about 4 hours a day without electricity for almost a month now, saying this also affects other premises such as the Nkowankowa Magistrates Court. Other areas include Ga-Kgapane, Lenyenye Town, Tickeyline, Nwamitwa, Dan village, Letsitele and many others and according to the municipality, residents are aware of the load reduction by Eskom, which is mainly a result of illegal connections and theft of electricity infrastructure. The municipality says communities are not allowing the power utility to install new prepaid meters, meant to combat illegal connections, which have continued to cost Eskom millions. here to bid farewell to one of the most illustrious sons of our motherland South Africa Our hearts are heavy because of this great loss But we are also here to celebrate a life well led On behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa I convey my deepest sympathies to the family of Tito Titus Mboweni on the loss of their father I convey my sympathies to the leadership and the membership of the African National Congress – a movement he served with integrity during the journey to democracy and beyond He was known by many names to many different people: He was larger than life because he led such a big life and touched the lives of many people He fraternised with heads of states and government such as Presidents and Prime Ministers He was on first name terms with central bankers around the world labour leaders and ordinary people in our country He understood them and he had a way to make people feel special and made them have a sense that they mattered Governor 8 could relate to people from all walks of life He looked for the good in each person – and usually found it Tito taught us that public service is noble and necessary; that one can serve with integrity and hold true to the important values He strongly believed that it was important to give back to the community and country in which one lived He recognised that serving others enriched the servant’s soul To me he was the shining star that shined brightest in a maze of a dark period in the life of our country we called state capture He had already left public service when i knocked on his door asking him if he would return to public service as Minister of Finance I just said Cde Tito your country needs you to do another tour of service He agonised about giving up the material value he was building for himself and his family But after a while he came through for the people of South Africa and agreed to serve as Minister of Finance The memories that people have shared of Cde Tito over the last few days tell us much about his personality and the relationships that he formed Some of the finest tributes have come from our nation’s journalists We hear of a senior Minister who was always accessible who pored over every detail in their stories We remember how he would dramatically bring a potted Aloe Ferox plant to his Budget speeches to illustrate his approach to fiscal discipline Through the Aloe Ferox he sought to illustrate that like our country the Aloe Ferox survives and thrives when times are tough We continue to admire how he always sought to demystify matters of the economy for our citizens He insisted that government must communicate with the people on how the economic decisions we take impact their lives We will remember his aversion to a flashy lifestyle He wasn’t just an avowed enemy of corruption throughout his life in public office In time we will look back at those social media posts of Tito defending his infamous brown shoes that had seen better days We may then read what was perhaps the deeper affability and humility belied an illustrious career His remarkable life spans the history of our democratic journey He was an activist in the struggle against apartheid He played a formative role in the development of the ANC’s economic policy as it prepared to govern As the first Minister of Labour of our democratic government he oversaw the construction of a new labour regime that would reflect the values of a democratic constitution He introduced legislation on collective bargaining and employment equity that have served our country well over nearly three decades These laws fundamentally transformed the labour relations landscape They restored dignity to the workers of this country that had been denied them for centuries He was the first black governor of the South African Reserve Bank He introduced inflation targeting and convened the bank’s first monetary policy committee meetings To keep the citizenry abreast on economic policy matters he introduced a televised monetary policy statement he undertook one of the most difficult of roles It requires an ability to take difficult decisions and to withstand extreme pressure it also requires someone with a keen understanding of the imperatives of development All of which must at the same time be matched by pragmatism He often had to tell his cabinet colleagues that there was no money for their ambitious plans we are better off for his steadfastness and resilience just as he championed fiscal discipline and evidence-based policymaking the National Treasury steered our economy through an extremely difficult period He became Minister of Finance when the country was emerging from the era of state capture and as the country had to confront a devastating global pandemic the National Treasury set itself on a collaborative course with the rest of government to restore policy and regulatory certainty This would culminate in the establishment of Operation Vulindlela a joint initiative of the Presidency and National Treasury to speed up the structural reform process the reforms driven through Operation Vulindlela have made considerable headway towards resolving challenges in our economy What many will remember but perhaps others do not know is that Tito was instrumental in developing the strategy underpinning the reforms we needed to embark upon in the network industries His insights and initiatives continue to have a very real material impact on our economy and on the lives of South Africans It is gratifying that Tito got to see the impact of his hard work during his lifetime He got to see how the lives and conditions of workers were improved He was able to see how safeguarding the independence and mandate of the South African Reserve Bank works He was able to see how reinforcing prudent and transformational fiscal policy is beneficial to a country On initiating far-reaching structural reforms has said it is difficult to think of any other economic policymaker who has left such an enduring legacy Tito was particularly popular with the younger generation could have a chart-topping rap song titled with his name could share tips with 1.5 million followers on the best curry powder to cook a chicken with and impart economic education at the same time have a delightful phrase: understanding the assignment Loosely deciphered it means knowing what must be done and doing it well Cde Tito and I shared a deep passion for trout fly fishing and would spend time talking about the skill of casting a line to catch a brown trout and compare that to prudent macro-economic policy management I kept fearing that on Budget Day we would bring a dead trout fish to the National Assembly and talk about it you are all having to deal with the raw heartache from his death but we want you to know that we are all feeling the pain together with you Tito’s departure has left a void in our hearts your legacy is of a successful transformation from a freedom fighter to a businessman You acquitted yourself with dignity and with honour in the ANC You did not disgrace or betray your movement or the people of this country This is the most we can hope for as leaders we should strive to be true servant leaders We should each aspire to do everything that our country asks of us The Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality has echoed Eskom’s message that areas that are currently experiencing load reduction must start buying electricity to have their status reviewed and surrounding areas earlier today embarked on a shutdown to raise their frustration over the (Photo by Phill Magakoe / AFP) Tzaneen, South Africa: Mbele Nonhlanhla laced up her silver cleats as her coach shouted encouragement to the creaky knees, stiff backs and laboured breathing in a dressing room in South Africa's far north. At 63, wearing jersey number 10 and sporting brown-dyed hair, the grandmother of seven was far from your typical footballer when she stepped onto the field for her first international tournament. "I feel like a superstar," Nonhlanhl grinned, revealing a missing tooth. "They call me the goal machine." Her team, Vuka Soweto, hails from the renowned township of Soweto outside Johannesburg. It had joined more than a dozen others from across Africa and beyond to compete this week at the Grannies International Football Tournament in the northern province of Limpopo. The four-day "Grannies World Cup" was held in a stadium with sweeping mountain views. The 30-minute games were played in two halves at a slow but purposeful pace, between teams from as far as the United States, France and Togo. "It is all about active ageing. Whether we win, lose or what, it is all about coming here and staying fit," said 62-year-old South African Devika Ramesar, a mother of two and grandmother of five. Until this week, the Liverpool fan had never stepped onto a football pitch. Kenyan striker Edna Cheruiyot only had two months to learn the "long list" of football rules before Friday, when she scored her only goal. She took selfies to remember her first ever trip abroad and send to her grandchildren. (Photo by Phill Magakoe / AFP) "I feel nimble. This is the lightest I have been since my first child in 1987," Cheruiyot said, adjusting the blue headwrap covering her greying hair. At 52, she is a youngster within her team, whose oldest player is 87. The idea for the tournament arose in 2007 as a way to improve the health of local women, said founder Rebecca Ntsanwisi, 57, who is fondly called Mama Beka. It came out of her sense of personal challenge following a cancer diagnosis that once bound her to a wheelchair. "The older women need to come together and enjoy. We are neglected," she told AFP outside the home where she lives with her ageing parents. (Photo by Phill Magakoe / AFP) She hopes to host the next tournament in Kenya. Almost 40 percent of South Africa's children live in households headed by their grandparents, according to government statistics. That is mainly due to poverty, cultural traditions and urban migration. But grandmothers should not be saddled with the responsibility of raising their grandchildren, Ntsanwisi said. "This is our time to enjoy and relax," she said. "I will die knowing that I did something." Chris Matson, 67, took the advice to heart and travelled from the United States to "enjoy every second of the tournament". "I did not play when I was little so to do it now is wonderful," said the bubbly goalkeeper for the American New England Breakers team. The team doctors, however, were earning their keep. The aches and pains of the elderly players needed constant checking, South African team medic Diana Mawila said. Some members of her Vakhegula Vakhegula team had to be monitored for high blood pressure before every game. But the team disagreed with Mawila's assessment and burst into heartfelt laughter. "We are fit!," captain Thelma Ngobeni said, balancing on her head a packet of maize flour that players had received after the games. "It is not about winning or losing. All that matters is that we showed up, had fun and did our best," she said. Nonhlanhla's goal was more ambitious. A dream of making it big in football was within reach, she said. "It's never too late to achieve your childhood dreams. I don't see anything stopping me," she added, walking out of the brick-walled tunnel to face France. In a scene mirroring professional football, the crowd erupted in applause as teams entered the stadium hand in hand with young mascots and national anthems played. "I'm halfway there, right?" Nonhlanhla smiled. Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba says ageing infrastructure continues to be a concern in most of the health facilities in the province. Ramathuba made an unannounced visit to the Nkowankowa Healthcare Centre outside Tzaneen this week, where she found that the facility’s doors have no locks. She raised a concern that this is depriving patients of their privacy. The MEC has indicated that some of the delays in the maintenance of infrastructure is as a results of poor record keeping of the reported issues. The family of 35-year Kevin Shingange who was brutally stabbed to death in December last year in Nkowankowa outside Tzaneen, has expressed concern over the delays in the case following multiple court postponements and unwillingness by police to investigate. The incident happened at the Van Rooyen Tavern in Nkowankowa after murder accused, Kenosi Mashangete, who was allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol, attacked patrons and subsequently stabbed Shingage to death in full view of the community. Mashangete appeared at the Ritavi Magistrates Court on Monday for bail hearing and his case was once against postponed due to the unavailability of the presiding magistrate. Capricorn FM’s Nhlamulo Marhule has filed this report: The Nkowankowa Testing Station in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality will reopen on Saturday following a month-long closure after a break in, in October this year.   Spokesperson for the municipality Neville Ndlala says not all services will resume at the same time but they will be using this first week from Saturday until the 12th December to close the backlog that was is there on driver’s and learners licenses.  He says there has been a long list of booking that were done before the testing station was closed and it is important that they focus on that before they start taking new bookings.  Ndlala says it is important for residents to remember the booking fees for the different licenses and they will be taking new bookings after the backlog has been covered.  NKOWANKOWA-A designer company called Judy Sanderson is based in Portugal and is named after Judith Fionah Sanderson Bernado, who is 37 years old, born and raised in Tarantaal and resides in Nkonwankowa. Judith, known by her childhood nickname Judy, attended Bombeleni Primary School in Nkonwankowa, Marito Primary School in Petanenge after that, and Laerschool Dr Anecke in Letsietele to finish her primary education.  After completing matric at Merensky, she obtained her B.Com in Accounting degree at the University of Pretoria. Judith spent six years working for Procter & Gamble in Cape Town and Nairobi, Kenya, where she also fell in love with her Portuguese husband. Later, in 2013, she relocated to Guangzhou, China, where she continued to work for Procter & Gamble before quitting after six months. Two years later, she relocated to Hong Kong where she continued her interest in fashion and pursued a degree in fashion design. She relocated to Portugal to be near her in-laws and to start her company, Judy Sanderson, as Portugal is one of the top-producing nations in Europe for textiles and apparel and has a long history of traditional tailoring.  The Judy Sanderson Business, which bears her name and her maiden surname Sanderson, was founded and is led by Judith, a mother of three Portuguese children. “To continue the Sanderson legacy, I decided to create a namesake brand under my name”, she said. The image of five-year-old Judith admiring the stunning women in her family as they paraded around in glitzy attire while attending church every Sunday stuck in her mind as she grew up, and it sparked a passion for the significant contribution that fashion can make to a person’s self-confidence.  She made her first outfit in 2003, a matric farewell dress, and it turned out beautifully and creatively. Judith Sanderson is a company that offers modern women’s ready-to-wear clothing, targeting ladies between the ages of 30 and 50. The story of Judith, a Tsonga woman, served as inspiration for Judy Sanderson, a distinctive clothing line that fuses the cultural aesthetics of South African designers with those of the rest of the globe.  Through her expression of her admiration for traditional tailoring techniques and her respect for individual originality and extensive knowledge, Judith Sanderson set out to empower the craftspeople.  She was selected by Canex-Creative Africa Nexus sponsored by Afrexim Bank, as one of the Top 20 African fashion designers to participate at the Tranoi Trade Show in Paris. Bernado was one of three designers from South Africa to have been selected, alongside David Tlale and Rich Mnisi. “I don’t have huge financial or self-promotion ambitions, but I want to live comfortably and be able to generate enough return on my company in a way I can reinvest in my brand so it can grow sustainably. My biggest goal is to truly do what I love and become known in the Fashion Industry by creating a positive impact and promoting _Ubuntu_ The Judy Sanderson collection has a B2B platform where they sell to other stores in addition to selling directly to consumers online at www.judysanderson.com. NKOWANKOWA-A 37-year-old suspect is said to be on the loose after allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl at section C in Nkowankowa, Greater Tzaneen. According to the mother of the minor and a concerned neighbour who cannot be named to protect her identity, the girl was sent to a nearby spaza shop when the incident allegedly happened on Sunday September 24. It is alleged that the man called the victim into his RDP house as she was walking to the shop. Once inside the house, he then ordered her to lie down, raped her while threatening to kill her if she screamed or told anyone and gave her fifty rands (R50) after the ordeal to buy her silence. “The man confessed to raping the child when we confronted him after the child told us what happened. We also took the child to the hospital. The results confirmed that the child was indeed violated. It is sad because this man is someone we know and trusted”,. The suspect reportedly ran away after the confrontation. Ritavi police confirmed that a case was opened, however, the suspect has not been arrested yet. Nkowankowa community representatives have shut down municipal offices in that township, demanding better services from the Greater Tzaneen and Mopani municipalities. Community representative Thulasizwe Shingwenyana is alleging that they are getting water bill statements while there’s no water provision in the area. He says municipal rates and taxes are not accurate, adding that there is no maintenance of the community infrastructure such as parks. He says the condition of the graveyard is unbearable whereas they are required to pay R1500 when they want to use them. Shingwenyana says the municipality is threatening to auction the residents’ houses. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality has dismissed allegations that they have threatened to auction houses belonging to residents who owe the municipality in rates and taxes. Municipal spokesperson Neville Ndlala says Nkowankowa residents told them they don’t know the people who are claiming to be community representatives. Ndlala says they haven’t gotten back to them because they are liaising with the community through ward councillors. He says they have already started working on projects after Nkowankowa community members raised those issues. Ndlala says a lot needs to be done to improve the graveyard and it is a big project which requires the municipality to follow supply chain management processes. It is alleged that the victim was trying to stop a man who seemed to be very high with nyaope from stabbing another patron. It was this time that the victim was stabbed in the chest and in the neck with a sharp instrument. Police were called to the scene but the suspect continued being so unruly and threatened to stab the police as well. The police shot the suspect on his right leg to subdue him and he was then arrested. Meanwhile, the victim was rushed to the nearby medical facility and he was later transferred to Letaba Hospital where he succumbed to stabbing injuries. The victim was identified as Kevin Nkateko Shingange (35) who was commonly known as “Dog”. The suspect is said to be under police guard at the Letaba hospital where he was taken for medical treatment for the shooting on his leg. Police have opened a case of murder and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon. NKOWANKOWA-Kenosi Mashengete appeared in the Ritavi magistrates court on Wednesday, December 27. This comes after his arrest at the scene of the crime on December 10 where he allegedly stabbed a patron to death at a hang-out spot in Nkowankowa. According to reports, the accused went into the establishment seemingly intoxicated and high on narcotics, took beverages without paying, harassed patrons and forcefully entered an office on the premises. It is reported further that the owner of the tavern who cannot be named to protect the name of his business, locked the accused in the office he entered forcefully and summoned the police immediately. It is said that upon the police’s arrival at the establishment, the room of which the accused was in was unlocked. He is said to have gone berserk and that’s when he allegedly attacked and stabbed the victim on his chest and back and threatened police officers in full view of patrons. He was allegedly shot on the thigh by police as he attempted to flee, overpowered and arrested. His bail application was postponed to Friday, December 30. The Limpopo Department of Health says services at the Letaba Hospital are affected by the current water shortages in Nkowankowa and surrounding areas due to a pipe burst on the bulk line at the Nkowankowa Water Treatment Plant. Areas supplied by the plant have been experiencing water shortages since last week Friday. The department spokesperson Neil Shikwambana says the hospital has been operating with water reserves from its storage tanks, but the reserves have been depleted and the hospital now relies on water tankers from the municipality. While the Mopani District Municipality indicated that it is working hard to restore water supply, Shikwambana says the theatres at the hospital have been greatly affected, forcing the hospital to concentrate only on emergency operations and temporarily stop elective operations.
