The Golden Bears had won OVAC titles in 2021
Harrison Central got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first
Mikayla Pelegreen smashing a double to deep center field
driving in runners from second and third to jump ahead
Oak Glen would strand two runners on in the inning
Golden Bears starter Danica Holden earning a punch out to end the inning
Oak Glen would strike back in the bottom of the third
It began with the second batter of the inning
but trouble getting the ball in allowed her to speed around the bag and head for home
scoring on the play to get the Golden Bears on the board
BIG MOMENT — Oak Glen’s Addie Smith congratulates teammate Riley Bruce after Bruce crossed home plate in the bottom of the third inning Friday evening during the Golden Bears’ OVAC 4A championship game against the Harrison Central Huskies at the I-470 Complex
Another hard-hit ball went for three bags later in the inning
Mattie Carney’s hit to deep left field driving in a runner to tie the game
coming home thanks to a two-out error on a ground ball
Oak Glen carried a 3-2 lead into the sixth
when knocks from Bruce and Addie Smith each drove in runs to stretch the Golden Bear lead out to 6-3
Carney held the Harrison Central offense in check throughout the middle portions of Friday’s championship
entering in the second inning and going the rest of the way
“Harrison Central presents a demanding challenge
and I can say their girls have made us dig deep to gain momentum
and find our offense,” Oak Glen head coach Sherrie Garner said late Friday night
“Our offense came alive in third when Riley Bruce didn’t stop for anything
When she came across the plate it sparked our next four hitters to reach safely and we gained the momentum needed
Excellent relief by Mattie Carney and our entire defense did their jobs to make outs when Harrison had runners on
again in the 6th our offense reignites with a hard single by Nevaeh Heath followed by solid at bats drawing walks from Balch
It was a fantastic to have the girls rally and the support from our bench
Oak Glen’s Nevaeh Heath connects with a pitch
they kept their focus and fight a battle to win an OVAC championship
The Huskies scraped one run across in the top of the seventh off the bat of Kara Blackburn
but there’d be no miracle comebacks in the works
and Oak Glen went off into the late evening as 4A champs
Kelsey Powers finished her day 4-4 with four singles from the leadoff spot
Carney knocked a triple after homering in the Golden Bears’ semifinal win over Beaver Local
three RBI and two runs scored from the leadoff spot
and Maddie Murray recorded two base knocks

for sharing her reflections on her own personal experiences in the workplace as she stresses the importance for everyone of encouraging greater diversity within financial firms
equity and inclusion policies largely led by US businesses
it is only natural to ask ourselves what the future holds for gender parity in our sector.
the number of regulated female advisers has grown a meagre 2%
we have all heard about firms pushing towards a more even split and previous federal policies have backed these efforts
so why does it still seem so hard to achieve within wealth management
I see this as the result of an entrenched view that roles in finance are predominantly occupied by men
It is our duty to challenge this time-honoured narrative and encourage more women to apply
develop and succeed in finance careers.
I know how often women in wealth management find themselves as the outlier
whether as the only female trainee amongst one’s cohort
I see this ‘challenge’ as an opportunity to bring an alternative perspective to the table from those of my male counterparts
earned through a differing industry experience
Should I succumb to the fear of being the ‘odd one out’
I would self-obstruct and risk missing the potential to progress my career and develop my network
This is also a chance to inspire other women and the younger generation to recognise the advantages in their diversity.
It is evident that more work needs to be done to attract
empower and promote female investment talent and the responsibility is on us all (male and female) to recognise this omission and change the narrative
I hope that workplace discussions and press coverage such as this will encourage aspiring female investment managers to find self-assurance in their own capability to thrive in this industry and I aim to motivate those around me to support a working culture that bears witness to gender parity.
I have observed a shift in the allocation of wealth amongst our client base
More women are earning notable salaries and female entrepreneurship appears to be growing
this has led to higher demand for wealth management services from female clients.
increases in childcare and living costs have made buying a home and raising a family virtually unaffordable for many and the outdated standard of a single-salary household held by previous generations is no longer a viable option
it is unsurprising that more women want to progress their careers and earn a stable income before embarking upon these life stages and bearing the ensuing financial responsibilities
they look to protect this wealth to meet future financial outgoings.
the financial goals of this pioneering cohort evolve from covering childcare and education costs to preserving wealth to pass onto the next generation
With greater demand from working women for investment management services
comes the need for a deeper understanding of the evolving objectives of these clients and their families
it is essential that I understand my clients’ monetary position and income fluctuations to efficiently manage their portfolios
This includes reviewing their financial objectives and reassessing their risk ability and tolerance at each life stage
making amendments to their portfolio asset allocation to ensure that their wealth continues to meet its purpose
as growing and prolonging one’s wealth has never been more difficult than in the current environment for today’s young working population.
Fostering future female talent as it enters the industry is one way to elicit change
As a newer player in the wealth management space
Oakglen Wealth is focused on promoting an inclusive environment
challenging the industry’s historical norms
This stance has already proven to disrupt the age-old perception of wealth management as a male-centric industry
as all our current trainees in the London office are women
but by virtue of attracting and employing the best emerging talent
independent firm means expectations to deliver are heightened
but it also allows for increased visibility and responsibility
I hope that the firm’s recognition of all employee successes
has instilled a sense of confidence in our trainees with regards to their ability to prosper in their careers
Their professional development will hopefully motivate others to follow suit.
Diversifying the Investment Management Pool
clients want to work with an investment manager that they trust and who understands them
This does not mean clients always want an investment manager of their same gender
that having a more diverse pool of investment managers enables the industry to serve the needs of a more varied client base.
The statistics prove that more must be done to support women in wealth management and level out the gender playing field
It is promising that the opportunities for professional development and success for women are increasing
with senior managers utilising their position of power to initiate structural change and promote their standpoint as advocates of female talent
ensuring that women are not only allowed into the room
but feel confident to flourish in these spaces amongst their male peers
It is crucial that we grant both genders equal opportunities to triumph
we must encourage one another to recognise the current gender gap and the benefits of diversity
equipping both men and women with the tools to carve out successful careers in the finance industry.

the wealth business set up by Cheviot founder Dominic Tayler
has hired another one of the architects of that firm
Phil Burbidge joins Oakglen after nearly two decades with Cheviot Asset Management (now Quilter Cheviot)
where he was among the team that helped found the business in 2006.
He left Quilter Cheviot at the end of January
and will take up the newly created head of compliance role at Oakglen
A company does not need vast capital investment to enter the wealth management space if it picks the right technology early on
Oakglen Wealth managing director Dominic Tayler has insisted
he said: “Many assume that entering our industry requires vast capital investment
strategic early investment in the right technology and its effective implementation can drive efficiencies and significant cost savings – lowering barriers to entry while maintaining high standards.”
He suggested the claim that firms need over £100bn in assets under management to succeed “does not always hold true”
some businesses that have reached this size have found that scale can limit investment opportunities
“We believe that being smaller and more nimble can provide certain advantages in delivering strong results,” he added
“Not having legacy systems gives us a real advantage
Some firms still operate on outdated infrastructure
“We were able to implement a complete
benefiting from expertise within our group
“A key piece of advice we followed was to take the full system with minimal modifications – reducing risks that often come with customisation.”
when the business had encountered integration challenges between Salesforce and SEI
software engineers from another business within the group
were temporarily assigned to resolve the issue
This is a great example of how we leverage technology effectively,” he added
Another thing he believes can set a wealth management business apart is its ability to “identify opportunities where others are not looking”
many see drinks companies as poor investments
but valuations have reached a point where they appear relatively cheap,” he said
“One stock we’re currently considering is CRH
If a ceasefire is reached and Ukraine begins rebuilding
there could be significant demand for cement.”
Tayler suggested that incorporating a thematic investment strategy allows the firm to identify the right stocks globally while “remaining flexible in its approach”
“The key is to invest in the best companies in their field
rather than focus too much on what others are doing
“Currency movements can sometimes work against you
but strong companies tend to balance this out in the long run.”
New entrants starting their own business might not need hundreds of thousands
but they will certainly need tens of thousands
Just look at the SJP ‘partners’ debt pile

READY — Oak Glen’s Lucas Zoellers awaits a throw at first against Wheeling Central on Monday. - Kim North
WARWOOD — The Wheeling Central Traveling Road Show, aka the talent-ladened baseball team, continued its impressive start to the season Monday.
The Maroon Knights (11-0) played 17 runs on 11 hits in the first two innings alone in routing visiting Oak Glen, 24-0, Monday on Chuck Howley Field inside Garden Park. The No. 1 W.Va. Class A squad has yet to play an inning at their home field – Cardinal Field at the I-470 J.B. Chambers Complex atop the hill in Elm Grove – due to wet grounds and conflicting games with Wheeling University.
“The dimensions are mostly the same anywhere you play,” Wheeling Central head coach Todd Cover explained of being road warriors thus far in 2025. “We just put our heads down and plow forward. It’s been tough … a lot of bus rides, but the kids have been resilient.”
Eli Sancomb is best known for his basketball skills but the southpaw showed the Golden Bears he’s not just a one-sport wonder. The lanky junior struck out five, walked two and only allowed a seeing-eye single in the third inning in his first career mound start. He threw 47 pitches in three innings.
“It was good to get Eli some innings. He hadn’t thrown yet this season. He was going to throw last week against Shenandoah, but the game got canceled,” Coach Cover said. “It was good to get him back into the swing of playing baseball.”
Sancomb was the beneficiary of a potent Maroon Knights lineup that drew high praise from Oak Glen head coach Eric Hayden. Wheeling Central collected 19 base hits, with seven coming in a 9-run bottom of the first. They added eight more runs in the second on four safeties.
“That is one of the best lineups in the state for any class,” Oak Glen head coach Eric Hayden said. “It is what it is to be honest. I thought our pitchers battled. When they threw strikes, Wheeling Central hit them and hit them hard.
“I’m proud of my guys that threw strikes. They competed,” he added. “We threw the ball for strikes and they hit lasers. I’d like to see a better lineup 1-through-9 in the state.”
Gary Hatfield and Brady Ernest did most of the early damage as Hatfield doubled and tripled in the first inning to drive in three runs. Ernest, the No. 8 hitter, recorded five RBI with a bases-clearing triple in the first and a two-run single in the third.
“I told someone the other day I feel we are pretty deep 1 through 9,” Coach Cover pointed out. “Usually in high school, once you get past the six spot, it kind of falls off, but we can start a rally at any time. Our No. 9 hitter is just as good as our No. 1 hitter.”
Hatfield, who is headed to Washington & Jefferson College to continue his academic and athletic careers, came up a home run shy of the cycle. He was one of eight Maroon Knights with a multi-hit outing.
Jake Brown added a single and double, while Seth Cover, Zayne Rosnick, Koy Lipinski, Brayden Cover and Kade Koroneos all singled twice, with Seth Cover leading the way with three RBI. Lipinski and Koroneso each had a pair of runs batted in. Every Maroon Knight starter scored at least once.
“We like to swing the bats,” Coach Cover added. “It’s a great bunch of kids to be around. They pull for each other and they’re not necessarily worried about stats, they just want to win. They are fun to be around.”
Koroneos relieved Sancomb in the fourth and fanned five of the six Golden Bears he faced.
“It was good to get Kade some work,” Coach Cover said. “He threw the ball hard. When he does that, he’s pretty hard to hit.”
Oak Glen loaded the bases against Sancomb in the third on back-to-back two-out walks and the aforementioned single by Josh Maher. However, Sancomb induced the pitcher’s best friend – a 4-6-3 double play that snuffed out the threat.
Wheeling Central travels to Noble County today to meet Caldwell in a battle of OVAC division leaders. The Maroon Knights sit atop Class 3A, while the Redskins are leading 2A at 5-0. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
“We’ve got two tough games ahead of us,” the coach noted. “We play at Marietta on Wednesday and then we’re done until next week.”

The investment manager reflects on the future of women in finance and considers the potential for growth in ESG investing
Q: Is there a particular asset class grabbing your attention at the moment and why
I think most people would agree that AI has taken the world (and the markets) by storm
it appears the jury is out with regards to valuations
As the world adapts to living with AI – and we start to recognise its rapid progression in development and its limitless potential – it could open the door to exciting investing opportunities in the tech space in 2024
Q: How do you see ESG-oriented investing evolving within the asset class you cover
I believe we could see an expansion in the number of green bonds issued and an escalation of impact investing
the issuance of green bonds in the first half of 2023 increased by around $300bn (£234.8bn)
projecting the highest six-month total since the launch of the green bond market
I forecast a continued upwards trajectory as the demand surges globally
See also: Generation next with Fiera Capital’s Bortot: There’s a new breed of investment professional
I have witnessed a growing demand from clients wanting to see an impact from ESG-focused investing
rather than merely applying a restriction to avoid certain industries or sectors
paired with the pressure on both governments and companies to be seen to not only minimise their environmental damage
but actively repair past planetary destruction caused
could result in a shift in the allocation of cash towards impact products in both the equity and bond space
Q: What will be different about the investment sector a decade from now
We will observe an increase in the number of women in the investment sector
both in the investment management career space
I am already seeing a growing number of young women looking to complete their investment management exams with the intention of having a career that allows for progression alongside the ability to earn a reliable salary
See also: Generation Next with SJP’s Jenny Chae: An eye on the future
Many young couples now require two stable incomes before being in the position to even consider purchasing their first home or having a child
I think the financial difficulties the younger generation currently face will play a part in the evolution of women moving into finance roles
The change in thinking across all investment workforces that women should have the same opportunities as men
illustrates the tables are already turning
The number of female employees in higher-paid careers will strengthen and their confidence to invest will be elevated by a rise in female investment managers to help them

what are we doing for mom and dad’s anniversary
What I did know was that “doing” would involve travel rather a wrapped gift
“Time with my family,” my mother always says
since that includes six adults and three teenagers
My sister suggested several feasible destinations close enough to San Diego but far enough from home
has been locked in our minds as a family keepsake
I have this fear that returning to any of those destinations might blanch those vibrant memories
At the foothills of the San Bernadino Mountains
The proximity made it an easy sell for my family
as did the pre-trip research of hiking trails
A text thread locked in the dates of July 4th weekend
with clapping and heart emojis to confirm our joy
Soon we were on our way to the agricultural community where giant wooden apple cutouts beckoned with the words
the most scenic option is to enter at Beaumont before Cherry Valley
and then exit through Yucaipa forming a 20-mile loop
At the core of this pretty little circuit is the 5-mile apple avenue
It feels more like a road-of-surprises than a town
and family-owned businesses all point back to apples
rumor had it we could still pluck from the heavy branches
Oak Glen’s summer weather teeters somewhere in the 80’s
I quickly rolled up the window and turned toward my mother who was pointing out landmarks to no one in particular
and historical sites including Oak Glen School House Museum
and Edward-Dean Museum with a collection of 16th-20th century works
We arrived three hours before the rest of the family
capitalizing on the early check-in at our lodging of choice
the manor—originally named the Baumann House—was built on a stroke of luck
Samuel Baumann struck liquid gold at his two-acre property in Signal Hill
a destination he chose after purchasing an Oak Glen apple from a child at the train station
Baumann took a bite of the crisp fruit and immediately invested in Oak Glen’s fertile land
One of Baumann’s students—Reginald Inwood—begged to design his professor’s new home
This first structure would catapult his career as a famed architect in Long Beach
There was nothing simple about those blueprints
demanding a manor built entirely from hand-cut boulders gathered by horse and carriage
The mogul was instrumental in putting Oak Glen on the map by supplying power
and rebuilding a one-room schoolhouse that still stands today
From the early Cahuilla and Serrano tribes to Samuel Baumann
they all recognized Oak Glen’s potential in the forests
it was Enoch Kidder Parrish who became the area’s first apple grower in 1860
and later the Rivers brothers who bought Los Rios Ranch
earning it the title as Southern California’s largest apple farm
Three generations of the Baumann family kept tradition not only by growing apples
but by inviting the community to the manor for their July 4th picnic
Community has always been a pillar of Stone Oak Manor
were seeking a wedding venue to host their big day
they purchased the manor to host their Dungeons and Dragons-themed wedding on Halloween 2021
This would be the first of many non-traditional weddings they hosted with onsite accommodations
the manor’s honeymoon phase was threatened by the pandemic
and the El Dorado Fire that ignited during a gender reveal party
the couple kept their cool by registering the wedding venue as a bed and breakfast
or by the entire 10-bedroom house from $1,000
This gave us access to a fully equipped kitchen
and plenty of outdoor space on two gated acres
There was even an attic dedicated to entertainment with boardgames
Murphy beds and extra roll-aways could comfortably sleep 20 guests
The nine of us cherry picked the coziest of suites with poster beds and private balconies
and then connected in the parlor for games and in the sunroom for conversations
If only we had known there was a serious one on the horizon
laughing over my mother’s surprising ability to land a beanbag at corn hole
and my father’s unexpired talent at the organ
Among antiques in the manor was an organ passed down from Kirsten’s great grandmother in Virginia
as she pointed out when my dad floored the pedal like an accelerator
we had an organ in our home that my dad fumbled across
singing hymns off key while I spun pirouettes behind him
those ballerina twirls were now towel slaps at my nephew’s thigh who just returned from college
My husband grabbed the towel and twisted it into a tight cylinder
My nephew went running; my sister hollered that dinner was ready; my niece unfolded her napkin; my brother-in-law removed his hat to say grace; and my mom clapped
as if catching that moment in the air between her palms
but I can keep landscaping to raise money for kids in Africa.”
Our forks dropped and the floodgates of emotions opened
and my husband angry that my dad didn’t know the meaning of selfcare
my parents had humbly sacrificed their own needs to serve others
we had plenty of questions to pour on the table
“I feel this weekend was ordained as part of the preparation journey.”
I might as well have been spinning pirouettes behind him
hiking bright and early at The Wildland’s Conservancy
This 909-acre Oak Glen Preserve took our minds off reality as we trailed streams beneath canopies of oaks
The Conservancy saved Southern California’s largest historic apple ranch from residential development
It also acquired thousands of acres to protect the San Bernardino National Forest
My parents sat down on the floating dock at Red-Wing Pond
It was there that the nostalgic sound of a church bell rang in the distance
Tears streamed beneath my mom’s sunglasses
the working apple orchard doubles as a living-history farm with dinner theater and educational reenactments
we were there on the exact weekend of the interactive cultural event honoring American colonies of the 18th century
“They must be sweltering in all that wool,” my nephew whispered
“Can you imagine having to play the baroque flute in this heat?”
The thespians were on point in the replica New England village
complete with colonial crafts like candle dipping
In the center were dramatic presentations with drumming and dueling
My dad peeked into the demonstration kitchen where two maidens kneaded dough
“My husband and I are settlers from England.”
I put my hand on their shoulders and suggested we move on to hard-cider tasting
We cooled off with ice coffees and hard cider from the attached tasting room
eventually making our way to the wrap-around porch for the breeze
Despite the cloud of news hovering above us
a 14-acre family-fun park with a petting zoo
and caramel wafted from the candy shop and creamery
to the point I asked an employee how they survived
especially September through October at the height of apple-picking season
Over half a dozen farms offered everything from U-Pick events and apple-cider doughnuts to corn mazes and cider pressing
It all culminates at the Apple Butter Festival during Thanksgiving weekend
“Let’s go back to the manor and watch the Euro Cup,” my husband suggested
Our new normal would involve weaning my dad off of sugar and carbs
An elderly gentleman held an outstretched apple sliver
I wanted my father to find joy in the small things
and one of several varieties along with Gala
Displayed among the preserves were antiques
we dined at Oak Glen Steakhouse across the street from Stone Oak Manor
owners Rick and Lori Knudsen won the $180 million lottery and invested their loot into the restaurant
it took a brutal hit after a mudslide buried the property in 7-feet of debris
a pleasant waitstaff offered us complementary dessert on account of my parents’ anniversary
while I explained we were tackling a health issue
and even more so when the waiter said that he too was watching his weight
and the potential that our equation would diminish without the mean
That next morning my dad hugged us all in the crook of his elbows
I thought of Oak Glen and its humble beginnings—from a kid at a train station
to a Berkeley couple who saw beauty in the stones
I thought of the fires and storms Oak Glen survived
I thought of Stone Oak Manor that gave us a place to dance in the kitchen
I wondered how this Julian-esqe pie town had the power to lure us with apples and unite us in memories amidst the pain
we would toil through this season together

who has had a successful career as a head baseball coach at Oak Glen and currently at Madonna
was officially hired Monday by the Hancock County Board of Education to take his talents to the gridiron and guide the Oak Glen football team
who coached the Golden Bears for the last three seasons
Miller said Monday night that he will continue as baseball coach at Madonna for the upcoming season
A former three-sport athlete and OVAC All-Star football player at Oak Glen in his playing days
Miller was the Golden Bears head baseball coach from 2017-2019 and was an assistant coach for seven seasons prior to taking over
He was hired in the same role at Weir High in 2020
He was hired as Madonna’s coach in 2023 and led the Blue Dons to an OVAC championship last season
he was an assistant coach on the football staff at Madonna in 2023
He was previously on the football staff at Beaver Local from 2015-18
He’s also an assistant wrestling coach at Beaver Local
He will be tasked with turning around his alma mater after the Golden Bears 1-9 each of the last two seasons

DOWN THE LANE — Weir High’s Anthony Jeffers goes up for a shot attempt past Oak Glen’s Elijah Knisley
Noah Willey and Will Weekley during Friday night’s game
WEIRTON — There is still a lot of basketball left to be played
but Friday night’s rivalry match up with Oak Glen was a very important game for Weir High
Coming in on a three-game skid and with its lowest two offensive outputs of the season in the last two of those games
the Red Riders had a team meeting and took some time to regroup before taking on the Golden Bears knowing they needed to respond
After scoring just 23 Wednesday night at Indian Creek
the Red Riders broke the 70-point mark for just the third time this season and looked to be clicking on all cylinders in winning the rematch with the Golden Bears and avenging an opening night loss with a 71-44 victory
“We had a really good practice (Thursday)
we had a little thing over at Seven Ranges and I told them to forget everything in the past and live for right now and the guys did what we taught them,” Weir High head coach Anthony Santangello said
“It was a gut check night for us and the guys responded
We needed to come in locked in and ready to go and the guys really stepped up.”
The Red Riders (4-9) nearly surpassed their total from Wednesday in the first quarter — netting 20 points in the opening eight minutes — and never trailed after pulling ahead to an early lead
Nine different players contributed on the scoresheet and all 12 to see the floor had at least a bucket
Damir Mowder led the charge with 18 points and six boards
six assists and three steals and Ryant Lyons drained three triples to net 13 points with three rebounds and three assists
and that’s what we really stressed to them,” Santangello said
We want to fill up that scoreboard and that’s what it takes to win — a lot of guys finding ways to contribute and finding their roles.”
After leading 20-13 at the end of the first quarter
the Red Riders pushed the advantage to 14 at the break at 35-21 and really took control for good with a 10-0 run to start the third quarter
leading by as many as 27 in the second half before both teams subbed out
it was an ninth-straight loss after a 4-1 start to the season
“It hasn’t been our night for a few nights now,” Oak Glen head coach Jerry Everly said
“We’re just in a funk right now and can’t seem to get out of it
we’re just not playing good basketball right now and not applying the things we’re doing in practice in the game
and it doesn’t take much for a young team to lose confidence
We’re looking for a spark and we haven’t found it yet.”
Oak Glen was led by 10 points from Noah Willey

FOR THREE — Oak Glen’s Tyler Evans shoots a 3 over Weir High’s Anthony Jeffers during Friday’s game
Evans hit six 3s and finished with a game-high 24 points to lead the Golden Bears to a 71-58 win
NEW MANCHESTER — It may be a small sample size to judge from just two games in
but Oak Glen coach Jerry Every certainly has to be encouraged by what he’s seen from his group in the fourth quarter its first two times out this season
After fending off Brooke in the season opener Tuesday
the Golden Bears went on a 18-0 run over a span of more than four minutes in the final quarter to turn a five-point deficit into a double-digit lead on the way to a comeback 71-58 victory over rival Weir High to open the home portion of the schedule
this is a resilient group,” Everly said
Gavin (Geisse) fouled out and he was our leading scorer in the first game
and he was the one that was shooting lights out at the beginning
we went half the fourth quarter without Tyler
Mason (Kell) did a great job getting open and we were hitting the free throws when we needed to.”
The late surge to victory came after the Red Riders had made a run of their own
and had opened the fourth quarter with four-straight points to go up five at 51-46
they were in what proved to be an insurmountable hole
we were up 51-46 … and we got selfish,” Weir High head coach Anthony Santangelo said
“We tried to make plays that weren’t there
We’ve got a whole new team out there
even with some of their guys out with foul trouble
We’ve got to keep learning and watch film and see where it goes from here.”
Oak Glen started the game hot on a 7-2 run and led 22-15 after the opening quarter
extending the lead further with a 9-0 run to start the third quarter
but Oak Glen pushed it back out to 10 at 39-29 at the break
The big first half for the Golden Bears was led by Evans
who netted all of his game-high 24 points and hit six 3s in the opening half
it was his night,” Santangelo said of Evans
We’re going to learn from it and move on.”
Evans’ performance early was what Everly and company are hopeful to see on a consistent basis this season
we probably get run out of the gym,” Everly said
it was Noah Wiley that stepped up for Oak Glen
netting 14 of his 17 points in the final eight minutes
Oak Glen went 8 of 11 from the line in the final quarter
“We stepped up in the fourth quarter again,” Everly said
“We don’t have a lot of senior leadership
And they’re really starting to believe in themselves
And then the sophomores are doing a great job
Aidan Dawson and Elijah Knisley coming off the bench did well for us
“These guys worked hard all summer and fall
They put in a lot of hard work and we’re seeing it
we haven’t done that in a while.”
The Red Riders were led by 18 points from Damir Mowder
13 from Anthony Jeffers and 12 from Justin Kaczmarek
Weir High: Has a big early season challenge when it hosts Wheeling Park on Tuesday
Marys on Saturday before going to John Marshall on Tuesday

READY TO GO — The Hancock County Board of Education Monday approved a bid from Lombardi Development for the pyrite remediation project at Oak Glen Middle School
NEW CUMBERLAND — A project to remediate a pyrite expansion issue located under Oak Glen Middle School is scheduled to begin as soon as the current school year comes to an end
members of the Hancock County Board of Education voted 4-0 in favor of awarding the contract to Lombardi Development
Superintendent Dan Enich offered a thanks to the voters of Hancock County
as approximately $800,000 from the bond levy approved last fall will go toward the project
“That was a key piece of the levy,” Enich said
Another $987,000 was provided through the West Virginia School Building Authority
explained the target date to begin the project is June 7
with an anticipated construction schedule of six months
with the highest bid coming in at $2,322,491
back portion of the Oak Glen Middle School building
which includes the school’s band room and locker rooms
because of the expansion of pyrite located under the school
Finance Director Joe Campinelli noted the expansion resulted from water and oxygen reacting with the pyrite
causing it to lift upwards and damaging the school’s foundation
Campinelli said there has been work already performed to address water runoff from the hillside located behind the school
which officials believe could be part of the cause of the issue
It was noted crews are set to excavate to a pre-set depth
but also taking action to ensure no future occurrence
“They’re going to put some type of sealant,” Campinelli said
“That should stop the expansion.”

the school board approved McKinley and Associates to serve as the architect for the project

Williamstown catcher Shayle Montgomery tags out Oak Glen's Mikalyn Balch as teammates Alyssa Clare (20) and Nevaeh Moore (7) look on during the host Yellowjackets' 8-0 five-inning game two setback to the Golden Bears
5 Class AA Oak Glen rolled into town Saturday afternoon and left with a twinbill sweep of Williamstown by scores of 12-1 and 8-0
The 14-6 Golden Bears of head coach Sherrie Garner
batted around in the top of the first in game one
pushed across nine runs and never looked back
junior right-hander Dani Holden fired a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts as the Golden Bears invoked the mercy rule playing as the home team when leadoff hitter Marleah Lough reached on an infield single and eventually scored the final run of the afternoon via a wild pitch
“That’s the reason why they are on our schedule and we want to get a taste of it
We also wanted to get our young girls to see what a good team looks like,” admitted WHS boss Ron Stanley of the now 6-10 ‘Jackets getting to know new regional foes
“It was hard for us to get the ball out of the infield there in the second game so that kind of hurt us and they weren’t going to make many errors.”
Williamstown pitcher Alyssa Clare delivers a pitch during a high school softball game against Oak Glen Saturday
who made a diving web gem toward home plate where she scuffed her knee after making a fully-extended grab on a popped bunt by Gracie Rush for the second out of the fourth
struck out the first four and fanned seven the first time through the order
“We play three doubleheaders and a single
We took a group before in 2019 and it was nice,” coach Garner said of going to the beach
“It gives them an opportunity to play and have some fun and have some family time
Seeing a new section and stuff and having the opportunity to come here and see regional opponents was our plan
just to see what the competition is like and give us new experiences
“We’re competing with the OVAC as well
Moving down to double-A we certainly have some competition ahead of us
win regionals and take this group to state.”
The first base runner for the Yellowjackets came via a one-out walk in the second by Kiersten Kerby
The only other ‘Jacket to reach base against Holden was third baseman Nevaeh Moore
who had an infield single with one out in the fifth
but was erased when she was caught stealing by Alex Watkins
Oak Glen two-hole hitter Mikalyn Balch reached on a one-out error in the bottom of the first
stole second and went to third on a passed ball
but was tagged out by catcher Shayle Montgomery after she tried to score on a wild pitch
Williamstown catcher Shayle Montgomery throws to first base during a high school softball game against Oak Glen Saturday
coach Garner’s program got the only run they ended up needing when Mattie Carney walked and scored on Holden’s RBI double to left
Losing pitcher Alyssa Clare got out of a second and third
situation in the second when Lough hit a shot into center field
but Kyla Myer came up firing for an inning-ending 8-2 double play
Balch walked to open the third and although Clare got the next two outs
her command left and five walks followed before Lough’s two-run single to center made it 6-0
Balch tried to keep the inning going after batting around with runners on second and third
Carney doubled and scored in the fourth on a wild pitch to get the Golden Bears within a run of the mercy rule
“We basically have the same core as we did last year,” added coach Stanley
“We lost Ava Johnson who was the only senior so we have a freshman starting now at shortstop in Gracie Rush
Williamstown second baseman Kiersten Kerby throws to first base during a high school softball game against Oak Glen Saturday
“We have grown a lot since last year
There’s only so much growing you can do with our limited practices
We have six wins so far and last year we only had two all season
She was plunked in the first and drew a pair of free passes
Courtesy runner Riley Bruce scored once and stole a pair of bags

West Virginia University’s Peyton Hall (left) wrestles California Baptist’s Drayden Morton in Hall’s return to Oak Glen High School on Sunday
— The match was set up for a storybook ending for four-time Oak Glen state champion Peyton Hall and the West Virginia University Mountaineers on Sunday in a special Big 12 wrestling dual at Oak Glen High School
The Mountaineers trailed by six points heading into the final match between Oak Glen’s greatest wrestler and California Baptist redshirt freshman Drayden Morton at 165 pounds
needed a pin to secure a tie for West Virginia
The 1,000 fans in attendance — many who have been a part of Hall’s life — roared as Hall was announced as a competitor for the final time in a gym which saw many great moments
The ending didn’t turn out as Hall or the Mountianeers wanted
friends and community supporters saw the former Golden Bear have his hand raised as a 5-1 winner
in its third year as a member of the Big 12 as a wrestling entity
Hall wasn’t too disappointed in the way the day played out
“This is definitely more sweet than bitter,” Hall said
“I’m happy to have wrestled here again.”
Hall was scoreless against Morton after a period
In the second period Hall scored a point on an escape
In the third as he furiously tried to pin Morton he had a takedown and also got a riding time point
but there’s going to be pressure at the national tournament,” he said
Hall said he saw many people he recognized just looking up into the stands before and during his match
“Honestly looking around here it was so hard,” Hall said
“I saw one person and instantly I saw someone else I know behind them
It was almost stressful seeing all of those people.”
The match gave an opportunity for those Oak Glen supporters who didn’t have the means to get to Morgantown to watch the two-time All-American
who had a stroke the morning after the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference tournament his senior season in high school
She had never witnessed Hall wrestle at the college level until Sunday
“She can’t talk and is in a wheelchair,” Hall said
“She can’t get out much.”
Hall’s high school sweetheart and fiance Hannah Clunk
a former standout softball pitcher for the Golden Bears
said she was not at all surprised this match at Oak Glen High School happened
“He was talking about it to me for a while saying ‘How cool would it be to wrestle here?'”
Clunk said Hall had talked to his coaches about the possibility of wrestling at Oak Glen again and was really excited when West Virginia and Oak Glen were able to make it happen
I didn’t know that many people would come,'” Clunk said
Hall’s mother Treena spent the match rooting on the other West Virginia wrestlers with full support as she wore one of Peyton Hall’s signature T-shirts
She never thought she’d be back in this gym rooting on her son
“You know how this area is,” Treena Hall said
Peyton Hall rode in from Morgantown with his other Mountaineer teammates on Sunday and was anxious to see how Oak Glen pulled it all together
“Seeing the mat set up as I walked in
“I was wondering how they were going to fit everyone in here as they told me how many people bought tickets
Hall improved to 14-0 on the season and 114-27 for his collegiate career
West Virginia is 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12

the Mountaineers haven’t wrestled in their home gym this season
suffered a 5-0 upset loss to California Baptist’s Elijah Griffin
¯ California Baptist was coming off a 32-7 win over Clarion (Pa.) on Saturday
“This Lancer team came to fight tonight,” said Lancer coach Derek Moore
“They did not give up anything easy and wore out their opponents

‹ BACK TO FOOTBALL PREVIEW
NEW MANCHESTER — The Oak Glen football team is looking to bounce back this season
Oak Glen dealt with some injuries last season as the team ended the season with a record of 1-9
“Our quarterback got hurt in the second game of the season,” Oak Glen head coach Doug Taylor said
“That put our football team in a tough spot
“Our problem was we just could not pass the ball
Our focus has been working on the passing game
“We played Roane County — a one-loss team — in the last game of the season
It showed we were capable of playing with teams
“I have told them that we are capable of doing things
We just have to play every play like the ball is going to go to you
We have to play like every down is going to be a touchdown
That’s what I preach to them all the time.”
Coach Doug Taylor discusses the upcoming season
Murray is expected to miss time at the beginning of this season
but they want to make sure he is completely healed up.”
Oak Glen lost some key contributors to graduation
but there is still talent on the 34-player roster
“Things are going pretty good,” Taylor said
We would have some kids there and some would go on vacation
Oak Glen has a good amount of youth on the roster heading into the 2024 campaign
and we have 14 freshmen,” Taylor said
we have 15 in the sophomore and junior group
Some kids don’t get a chance to play a lot of JV games
Our freshmen are going to be able to play in JV games this season
The majority of the players on the roster have played football before
“We have three first-time players,” Taylor said
“We have 31 who have played before.”
The Golden Bears struggled to score on offense and were held to eight or fewer points in half of their games last season
“Our offense is based on our running game,” Taylor said
but we are going to have to run the ball to set up the pass
A lot of high school teams run RPOs — run-pass options
We need to do that in order to keep the secondary out of our run game.”
Oak Glen is going to have to rely on its offensive line to do the job up front
and the Golden Bears have a number of guys capable of accomplishing that
The line is expected to be the strength of the team this season
we return two three-year players and two two-year players up there,” Taylor said
I have told those guys that we are going to go as far as they can take us
“We have guys who have played a lot of varsity football
Most of the guys have played 20 varsity games
Some of the guys have played 10 varsity games
We have a good group of guys up front.”
“We have guys who are going to be able to spell the other guys,” Taylor said
“We have three guys who are going to play both ways
and we have two guys who are going to be able to give them breaks
It is a deal where they may come out for two or three plays on a drive
and then they are going to get right back in there
We have juniors and seniors in that group.”
The Golden Bears also return some talent on the defensive side of the ball
“We return our defensive ends and one of our defensive tackles,” Taylor said
“We also have two of our inside linebackers back
Our strength is going to be between the tackles.”
Players are still battling for starting spots at some positions
but the other cornerback spot is still open,” Taylor said
“We are going to have to have some other guys step up.”
Oak Glen focuses a lot of time on its special teams unit
and the Golden Bears have some holes to fill in that aspect of the game
so we have to find a kicker,” Taylor said
“We have kids who are in their second and third year of playing
and they have played a lot on special teams
“Ray Pernell is our special teams coach
He does a great job with our special teams
so special teams is an area we are going to have to work on
We spend at least two hours a week working on special teams
We are going to rely on our special teams for field position
We want our guys to put us in good field position
and we want to take away field position from our opponents.”
The Golden Bears are focusing on themselves as compared to their opponents
“We want to do what we do,” Taylor said
We want to win more plays than our opponents
we are going to win some games this season.”
This year’s schedule will have a different look
“We have made some changes to it,” Taylor said
“We have gotten away from the long trips
Oak Glen is scheduled to open the season at home against Weir on Aug
but we just have to stay focused,” Taylor said
“We have to be focused on getting better every day
We just have to stay focused on the task at hand
West Virginia has gone to four classes for football
“It is going to be interesting,” Taylor said
We are still in Class AA along with Bluefield and schools like Williamstown and Wheeling Central that have moved up from Class A
Class AA is still going to be a tough classification.”

NEW MANCHESTER – A grant from a national retail outlet will help a group of Hancock County students as they continue to hit their targets
Representatives of Dick’s Sporting Goods visited the Oak Glen Middle School campus Friday morning to present a contribution of $10,000 in support of the school’s growing archery program
“We’re very proud of this program,” said OGMS Principal Derek VanDyke
the middle school program already has 27 students participating
according to teacher and coach Jennifer Hardy
“It’s introduced to every student in the school in fifth grade,” she said
explaining full participation on the team currently includes sixth-
The grant will be put toward the purchase of new equipment and safety measures
The school currently uses space in its gymnasium and cafeteria as practice areas for the team
vinyl curtains to offer additional protections
Other students aren’t allowed entering those areas during practice sessions
“It’s the safest sport in the schools,” said Robert Conant
in order for the program to be able to accept more students
and there are certifications needed through the state to be able to serve in such a position even though the sport is only played on a club level at the moment
Oak Glen High School also has an archery program in place
and will receive a share of the funding from Dick’s
There are 18 students on the high school team
Funding for the grant comes from the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation’s Sports Matter program
which was created to support efforts to allow under-resourced schools
community teams and 501-c-3 organizations in providing opportunities for youth to play sports
representatives of Dick’s who were on hand for the presentation
the grants typically are provided through community donations
“It’s a great program,” Valvo said
Hardy offered appreciation to Chase Vandine
an Oak Glen alumnus and district manager for Dick’s Sporting Goods
who coaches archery in the Ohio County Schools system
for his assistance in establishing the program at Oak Glen
their goal is to see the archery program expand to Weir Middle and Weir High School
and host tournaments of their own with other schools in the region

make the trip out to these SoCal apple picking farms for fresh apples
cider doughnuts and other autumnal delights
Southern California’s apple picking season, which generally runs from Labor Day through Thanksgiving
draws apple-loving Angelenos to comparatively rural counties nearby for a fresh taste of fall and a change of scenery
The closest apple picking area to Los Angeles is Oak Glen
a small unincorporated town in San Bernardino County where a cluster of longtime orchards allow purists to pick apples straight off the tree and indulge in timeless fall treats like apple cider
apple cider doughnuts and hot chocolate (even if the actual weather outside still hovers above 80 degrees).
Though it usually runs from Labor Day through Thanksgiving
for best results and little chance for disappointment
arrive earlier in the season to ensure there are still apples on the trees (Julian’s orchards
will close whenever there aren’t enough fruits left to satisfy heavy weekend crowds.) Regardless of which SoCal apple picking towns you choose
there’s still heaps of fall fun to be had—so jump in the car and head to the best apple picking farms near Los Angeles.

It’s a long-beloved autumnal haven for scores of Southern Californians seeking an “authentic” fall experience
complete with U-pick apples and warm cups of cider
“The attendant lure of Oak Glen for the flatlander, deprived of seasonal ebb and flow, is the chance to shop for apples where winter is a-comin’, where the leaves are changing and where your coat is cinched up against the thin, cool mountain air,” writer Chris Hodenfield described in the L.A
But it’s not all autumn leaves and apples. Last month, the community bore witness to a devastating mudslide that resulted in the death of a 62-year-old woman in nearby Forest Falls and damage to or total destruction of 16 homes
“This is California’s new reality,” Brenda Ebrahim
whose barn and property were swamped by debris
As is typical in many small towns, Oak Glen has seen its fair share of drama, especially within the apple industry
And the community has also come together to survive
Gomez spoke with nearby residents who planned to use their backhoe and skid steer to clear their neighbors’ driveways in the aftermath of the mudslide
“It’s what we do up here for each other,” Nicole Duncan said
many of the businesses in Oak Glen remain open for visitors making the 80-mile journey from Los Angeles and beyond

Now, U-pick season is drawing to a close, and we’re fast approaching the next phase of Oak Glen’s autumn celebrations: its famous Apple Butter Festival.

The South Fork Trail is one way to summit San Gorgonio Mountain. (Mary Forgione / Los Angeles Times) Tucked up against San Bernardino National Forest
Oak Glen is a convenient jumping-off point for anyone searching for a breath of fresh air — or a serious trek
The San Bernardino Mountains, part of one of only two east-west trending mountain ranges in the continental U.S., are “the most botanically diverse range of its size” in the nation, according to the Wildlands Conservancy. The organization is in the process of developing the Southern California Montane Botanic Garden at its Oak Glen Preserve
botanic garden and outdoor discovery center are open to hikers and picnickers daily
Interested in venturing even farther into the San Bernardino Mountains? The San Gorgonio Wilderness
home to Southern California’s tallest peak
is easily accessible via a number of trails near Oak Glen
My husband and I summited 11,503-foot-high San Gorgonio Mountain in June 2020, our last training hike before climbing Mt. Whitney two weeks later
the 18-mile hike tested our mettle even more than the longer Whitney hike
I distinctly remember the ache in my legs after rising above the treeline
left with nothing but white rock and blue sky ahead
But the views from the top — and the lush foliage along Vivian Creek toward the beginning of the trail — made our efforts well worth it
If you’d like to try hiking San Gorgonio Mountain, you’ll need to obtain a free wilderness permit. More information is available on the U.S. Forest Service website
I strongly recommend waiting until the warmer months
though it’s possible with the right experience and equipment to summit during the winter too

If you keep up with Escapes, you’ve seen me mention California Fall Color
many Golden State residents’ favorite resource for autumn adventures
Casey Schreiner, writer of the Wild newsletter for the next few months, chatted with California Fall Color’s editor and publisher, John Poimiroo, about tips for fall leaf viewing earlier this month
I hopped on the phone with Poimiroo myself recently to learn more about fall in California — and California Fall Color’s beloved slogan: “Dude
“I’m poking fun at us as Californians,” Poimiroo told me
“I’m certainly not a surfer … but I thought [it] would be a way of saying to Californians
get out of your shell and get up to see where the fall color is,’” he added
A bit of news as well: Poimiroo says he plans to sell California Fall Color this year; he’s freeing up time for a few creative projects
as well as his role as a bike patroller on the National Ski Patrol
He said he had 11 people interested in taking over the seasonal travel blog
… I want to pass it on to somebody who cares.”
